SHAPING THE FUTURE

As Artistic Director one of the most interesting - and exciting - things about my role is helping to shape the future of the creative programme here at Macrobert. No arts organisation can ever stand still. Artists are curious, restless, inventive people by nature after all. So, investing in the future –whether of the building or the next generation of artists – is essential to sustaining the creative energy that defines Macrobert’s quality and character. Throughout the year we provide support for artists in a range of ways: through Open House – our free rehearsal lab – as well as seed investments, co-productions and development programmes. Sometimes new performing opportunities emerge from these initiatives and it’s fantastic that this summer we’re supporting a co-production with emerging theatre-makers Mythography Collective. A world premiere, BULL / FIGHT, is running at Summerhall throughout the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. If you’re making a visit to the Festival, it’s well-worth seeing – an intense and memorable new drama.

I’ve also been considering the future of the Playhouse Studio theatre space. Many may not even realise this exists! But we have an intimate 80 seat studio theatre / cinema tucked away behind the main space. It’s in a somewhat sorry looking corridor ‘out the back’. It’s a great wee theatre but over the years its simply lost sight of

its purpose and its identity. So this autumn we’re starting the process of re-imaging what this space might become, with a renewed focus on providing support for the next generation of theatre makers, allowing the space to become more of a laboratory for experimentation and innovation, with more student-led activity including opportunities for technical skills training and learning, working more closely with campus and with schools as well as a mix of shows and films. Over time we’ll establish a dynamic new brand identity. It’s early days but you’ve got a sneak peak of what things might – eventually – look like… Studio 80: a small space with big ideas.

As Artistic Director, I’m proud to say we’re investing in the future of theatre making, right here, at Macrobert.

See you there, Ed Robson.

Once upon a time, in a far away land – even further than the Falkirk Wheel – was a town named Stirling Stella. A town where the recession never ended, the high street is held together by charity shops, and its people were in deep, deep trouble.

Bunty Buntock is struggling to pay the rent (and her subscription to dating app PlentyMoreDish). Belle has had enough of men – especially her thigh-slapping, protein-shaking, red-flag-waving ex, Gaston. And spare a thought for the once pretty-boy Prince — cursed, cancelled, and confined to the draughty halls of his forty-bedroomed mansion after being turned into a hideous beast. But behind the fangs and fur lies a man who just wants to be loved again — and maybe even share his library with someone who enjoys the same stories.

Who could have guessed that a stolen rose and a mother who really should have asked before picking the flowers would change all their lives forever?

A riotous reimagining of the greatest love story in the pantosphere with a heartlifting happy ending that proves even the unlikeliest love can bring the house down.
