WELCOME TO AN ACTION-PACKED PROGRAMME FOR 2016!

In the year since I became Artistic Director we’ve been considering what matters to us and, most importantly, what matters to you, our audience. To give the best provision it’s vital that we’re clear about our purpose and after lots of engaging conversations we’re moving forward with a strengthened understanding of what we’re doing, who we’re doing it with and why. Macrobert Arts Centre is: Making Active Connections - with People, Communities and Ideas - for Entertainment, Wellbeing and Understanding. Find out more: www.macrobertartscentre.org Our spring Get More programme, with 5 Soldiers at its heart, helped us realise this purpose. More than 550 people attended 5 Soldiers performances (over 30% were here for the first time), over 100 school pupils saw the show, and more than 70 took part in 20+ hours of free schools dance workshops. A new dance piece was created with the school participants and performed on 14 May. It was so successful it went on to be part of Stirling’s Military Show on 18 June. The wider community connections made include The Army for Scotland, Royal Caledonian Education Trust and the Community Covenant.

This autumn our Young Changemakers programme features Glasgow Girls and a celebration of young people playing an active part in the democratic process inspired by The Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 21. The ‘Awe inspiring’ Glasgow Girls is a fun filled Musical: a real story of young people changing the world. We invite you to enjoy the performances and join your local community in deeper conversation with our future leaders, our young people. MACROBERT ARTS CENTRE: A SPECIAL BUILDING Thu 1 to Thu 29 Sep

In 1966 the University of Stirling received a donation from the MacRobert Trust to build a ‘special building’. This exhibition draws from the University’s Archive Collection to explore the original development, conceived

by Robert Matthew of Johnston-Marshall and Partners, and the re-development in 2002 by Appleton Architects and Buro Happold.

In 2005, the home of Agnesa Murselaj, a 15 year old pupil at Drumchapel High School in Glasgow, was raided at dawn and she was detained with her family.

She could have become just another statistic, but her school friends decided enough was enough and the ‘Glasgow Girls’ were born. After lobbying the then First Minister Jack McConnell, the Scottish Executive and the Home Office, the Glasgow Girls achieved cross-party support on the issue, inspiring a powerful human rights movement which would eventually change immigration practices in Scotland - becoming one of the most vocal and powerful asylum campaigns in modern history.

A key part of this season is the fun-filled show inspired by these events – Glasgow Girls – and a series of activities involving our own Young Changemakers exploring The Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 21.

‘Everyone has the right to take part in the government of his country, In June 2015 the minimum voting age in Scotland went from the UK wide 18 down to 16 and our 16 and 17 year olds have already had a voice in the Independence Referendum and the Scottish Parliamentary Elections. With Scotland leading the way in democratic participation for young people, there are lots of questions to answer:

Who will be the leaders of tomorrow?

What issues and new ideals will they champion?

How will this affect all of our futures?

We’re inspiring our own Young Changemakers to explore these and many more questions for the future, inviting students from the University of Stirling and local schools to lend their voices to the discussion as well.

Military families living in the Forth Valley have been exploring the theme of identity through conversation, letters, stories and photographs with artist Jenny Wicks.

A story of courage, sisterhood and pride, this play follows six women living through the massive Italian migration that took place between 1850 and 1950. Using prose, poetry and music from Scottish and Italian traditions, the experiences of both nationalities are brought to life with stories of women divided, yet united, in a battle for identity and belonging.

Based on hundreds of interviews collected over thirty years, the play is deeply relevant to current debates around immigration, exploring themes of acceptance and rejection, confrontation and collaboration.

An identity in crisis, a country in revolution, Anastasia is a ballet about one of the great historical mysteries of the 20th century, only recently solved.

At the height of the Russian Revolution the royal family were executed, but afterwards a young woman appeared – apparently the surviving royal princess. Known as 'Anna Anderson', she couldn't remember her past and was presumed an imposter. Anastasia is a dramatic and haunting exploration of Anna's nightmare of memory and identity.

There is a pram parking bay just as you enter the building beside the Box Office and booster cushions are available on request for the Filmhouse. We have baby changing facilities in both the men’s and women’s toilets in the main foyer and a baby care room in the Arthouse which includes a wheelchair accessible toilet, changing area and private area for feeding.

Mothers are welcome to breastfeed anywhere at Macrobert Arts Centre.
