t. Shasta draws visitors from all across Northern California as a gateway to world-class recreation, known worldwide for picturesque mountain terrain and excellent quality of life. A unique blend of friendly neighborhoods, attractive parks, fine restaurants and prosperous businesses make this well-rounded city the jewel of Siskiyou County.

A population of nearly 3,500 maintains the “small-town” atmosphere that makes residing here so desirable. The streets are safe and clean, local businesses provide a stable financial base, and there is a great community spirit for all to enjoy.

Located only an hour’s drive north of Redding, the City of Mt. Shasta has easy access to the excitement and amenities of nine counties within the area, while retaining its own identity as the recreational and cultural hub of the Shasta Region.

The City of Mt. Shasta is both 60 miles north of Redding and south of the Oregon border next to Interstate 5. Our valley is surrounded by pine-covered mountains with the snowy volcanic peak of Mount Shasta towering 14,179 feet high. The city limits is an area of 3.4 square miles, with an elevation of 3,500 feet and sloping upwards. The sphere of influence extends about 41 square miles and is surrounded by the Shasta Trinity National Forest.

Climate

With exceptional air quality and pure water in a high alpine environment, we enjoy four distinct seasons. The weather in the City of Mt. Shasta and Siskiyou County is ideal. Average summer afternoon temperatures are in the 80’s with no humidity, and evening temperatures may drop to the 40’s. Rain and snowfall occurs mainly in the months of October through mid-May.

History

Much of Mt. Shasta City’s past is connected to the splendor of nature that characterizes the region. Water, in the forms of snow, pure springs and even log ponds, has played an important role in the area’s history.

Several Native American tribes lived around Mount Shasta and many continue to hold ceremonies on the mountain, a part of their traditions for uncounted centuries. The snowy slopes drew the attention of Hudson Bay trappers in the late 1820’s who assigned several names to the peak. Among them, Peter Skeene Ogden gave it the name Sastise; however, it is uncertain whether he saw Mount Shasta or one of the Cascade Mountains in southern Oregon.

It was in the 1850’s that the area became home to a growing population of newcomers. Originally the town was called Strawberry Valley and boasted a stage stop, an inn and tavern, and a bucket and tub factory. When the community applied for a post office it was required to change its name, as there were too many “Strawberry Valleys” in California. Thus the alpine village took the name Berryvale.

The railroad came to the community in 1886 with the support of one of the community’s founding members, Justin Hinckley Sisson. The new town site and railroad station was built on the land Sisson granted to the railroad company and the town was named Sisson. The town was to go through one last name change in 1924 when citizens voted by a narrow margin to rename the town Mt. Shasta.

tain. The College of the Siskiyous’ Mount Shasta Collection preserves much of the body of work inspired by the towering peak that has been shaped over the past 250,000 years by a series of four eruptive episodes.

Mount Shasta has long been home to mountaineers and other backcountry enthusiasts. The first recorded climb to the summit was in 1854; today over 15,000 people make an attempt on the summit annually. Those interested in less wild terrain can enjoy downhill at the Mt. Shasta Ski Park, which opened in 1985 below tree line, and cross county ski. In the 1930’s Snowman’s Hill, on the road to the Park, was the popular spot for skiing and ski jumping. For two decades a ski area was maintained above tree line at the end of Everitt Memorial Highway. A fire destroyed the lodge in 1971. The lodge was rebuilt and the Mt. Shasta Ski Bowl remained open until a 1978 avalanche took out the upper ski lift.

Prior to the arrival of the railroad, the clean water and mountain air drew people for summer vacations. With the railroad bringing visitors from the heat-blasted southlands the area became a popular resort destination in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Some of those resorts, like Stewart Mineral Springs, still stand today, while only remnants of others remain.

Much of the area’s popularity has been tied also to mountaineering and snow sports. John Muir traveled to the area in 1875 and was trapped high on the mountain by a snowstorm.

He and other climbers huddled in hot springs for 17 hours to survive the storm. Muir was one of many noted writers, artists, botanists and other scientists who traveled to the moun-

t. Shasta is a prime location for business relocation, expansion and development. Our scenic area offers many competitive business advantages in addition to an excellent quality of life for you and your family. Our prime location on the West Coast offers access to major transportation links for your business as well as the gateway to the great outdoors for recreation enthusiasts.

Alongside the recreation inspired by the spectacular setting, the community’s economic base was built on the timber industry, government agencies, education and a variety of small town businesses. In recent years the medical community grew to be a large part of the community’s economy. Embracing clean industry reflects residents’ desires to preserve the natural beauty of this place and the special quality of life that comes from living on the slopes of this mountain.

Since the 1940’s the Mount Shasta Chamber of Commerce has been the voice of business for the Mt. Shasta area.

Through the Chamber, local professionals and businesses work together to identify, define and find solutions for community issues.

The core industry and economic generator in Mt. Shasta is tourism. Tourism affects every business in Mt. Shasta, directly and indirectly.

Water has played an important role in Mt. Shasta’s economy from the days of the early 1900’s when tourists came to drink the soda water at a number of resorts. Much of the tourism industry is built on water, in one form or another. Fishing, river rafting, boating at Lake Siskiyou and camping around alpine lakes attract many visitors every year. Snow supports booming business at the Mt. Shasta Ski Park and the mountaineering industry. The City of Mt. Shasta has won the California Rural Water Association’s Best Tasting Drinking Water contest three times in the last five years: 2006, 2008, and 2010. In 2007, the City competed for top honors nationally

Education

M

t. Shasta schools provide strong academic programs along with safe, well-maintained campuses. The Mt. Shasta school system consists of three schools from K to 12th grades.

Mt. Shasta Elementary School serves approximately 250 students, with fully credentialed classroom teachers and credentialed specialists all working with kindergarten to third grade.

Sisson School is a Middle School Community School, which together serves about 370 students from fourth to eighth grade. The emphasis is on small class sizes where students are receiving the maximum amount of direct teacher/student contact.

Mt. Shasta High School serves over 350 students from 9th to 12th grades and has a long and proud tradition of maintaining standards through high ideals and commitment to school improvement. 2013 state test scores continue to place Mt. Shasta High School in the top ten percent of all California high schools and show Mt. Shasta to be one of the top high schools north of Sacramento.

In addition to its public schools, Mt. Shasta offers a range of private education options to residents as well as several excellent charter schools.

Golden Eagle Charter School’s focus is on independent personalized learning for home school students, as well as those currently in public school who are looking for an alternative schooling option. Their staff of accredited teachers will work with students and their parents to find a curriculum that meets with both the students needs as well as the state requirements for their grade. Golden Eagle Charter School has been operating in Mt. Shasta since 2003. They serve students ranging from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Mattole Valley Charter School provides an innovative public education environment to students. The staff of accredited teachers support parental choice in educating their children. Teachers work with both parents and students to develop a personalized curriculum that is WASC accredited.

The Mt. Shasta branch currently has over 60 students enrolled ranging from K-12. Their staff of 3 full-time teachers meet with independent study students as well as teaching onsite classes. Originally founded in Humboldt County, Mattole Valley Charter School has been serving students in Siskiyou County since 1998.

The county is home to the College of the Siskiyous, which offers a Bachelor of Science (in partnership with Southern Oregon University), Associate of Science, Associates of Arts, and over 20 Vocation Certificate programs.

Recreation

iskiyou County offers a wealth of recreational opportunities for active individuals and families.

Scattered throughout the county’s varied landscape are hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails.

Spectacular mountain vistas and crystal-clear alpine lakes make Mt. Shasta the most idyllic destination in the county.

Mount Shasta is a single peak in the Cascade chain, with a height of 14,179 feet. Rising 11,000 feet from the surrounding valley, it dominates the landscape of northern California.

It presents a thousand different faces, inspires great awe and respect, and beckons all to view it from every possible perspective.

Mt. Shasta City Park is home to the headwaters of California’s powerful Sacramento River. Even during the driest years, clear, icy water rushes from the hillside feeding streams and ponds. Walk along the creek and follow hedges of horsetail, fern and fragrant willow. The 26 acre public park is located off N. Mt. Shasta Blvd. on Nixon Road.

Shastice Park is at the north eastern part of the city. The park consists of 38 acres, 14 of which are developed. An outdoor ice rink is available from December through February.

Lake Siskiyou was built as a recreational lake just minutes from downtown Mt. Shasta. The lake offers great trout fishing, family friendly campgrounds including approximately fifteen cabins. Fed by five clear mountain streams, Lake Siskiyou’s 430 acre recreational waters are held by Box Canyon Dam at the south end. Boat fishing and trolling is great any time of year with speeds limited to 10 mph. Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort, 3 miles west of Mount Shasta on W. A. Barr Rd.,

offers a boat ramp with marina, boat rentals, and free fish cleaning station. North Shore Road off W. A. Barr Rd. is an unpaved road leading to several fishing access areas. Please park in designated areas. The lake offers Rainbow, Brown trout, Bass and Crayfish. In 2010 a custom 260 foot bridge was erected at the mouth of Wagon Creek for the pleasure of pedestrians and bicyclists alike creating a picturesque 7.6 mile trail that snakes around the lake.

The Mt. Shasta Ski Park boasts of 425 skiable acres, with 32 trails, 1390 vertical feet, 3 triple chairs and one surface lift, 20% beginner, 55% intermediate, 25% advanced. Night skiing on 14 trails and 3 lifts have become a must do at the ski park.

The Mt. Shasta Nordic Center is an economically-viable, community-based non-profit organization that strives to inspire a passion for Nordic skiing by providing marked back­ country and groomed Nordic trails to a broad range of skiers in the Northern California/Southern Oregon region. Through the financial support from members, partners, and the community, it offers donation-based Nordic ski trail access, a fullservice facility, and an array of ski programs for diverse populations. The Nordic Center has 25 km of groomed trails.

Mount Shasta country offers a variety of whitewater rafting experiences – from class II family float trips, to multiple day excursions, to heart pumping class IV thrill rides. Family float trips on the Klamath River provide an opportunity for parents, grandparents and children to reconnect while enjoying the natural beauty along one of Siskiyou County’s wild and scenic rivers. Just a half hour south of Mt. Shasta, spring boaters can put in on the Upper Sacramento River at Sims, where a steady stream of rapids keeps paddlers and guides busy all day.

Mt. Shasta Fish Hatchery grounds remains open to visitors year-round from 8am to sundown, providing ample parking, rest­rooms and a shady picnic area with a view of Mt. Shasta. Tour the oldest operating hatchery west of the Mississippi. Large, open ponds hold rainbow and brown trout raised to stock mountain fishing streams, rivers and lakes. Children enjoy feeding trout from the handy fish food dispensers. In early spring after the tiny eggs have hatched, see over three million fry being cared for in special tanks ­until they are large enough to be moved outside to the ponds.

Mt. Shasta Sisson Museum, located at 1 N. Old Stage Road is on the grounds of the Mt. Shasta Fish Hatchery. Tour the museum’s permanent mountaineering, Indian and local

history exhibits and enjoy revolving exhibits detailing Mt. Shasta history.Each summer the museum hosts a popular quilt show and art exhibit.The gift shop contains books, posters, jewelry and much more. Annual Meeting & Awards Banquet: The banquet held at the beginning of the year is the Chamber’s annual membership meeting that celebrates the extraordinary things local community members, businesses, and organizations do throughout the year.

Business Luncheons: Held quarterly to provide networking opportunities for members and guest speakers who offer dialogue on issues affecting Mount Shasta and its business community.

Chamber Connection: The newsletter is published in March, June, September and December. The fee to place an insert is $50; the deadline for inserts is always on the 17th of the month preceding the publication. Visitors Bureau: The Mount Shasta Chamber of Commerce is also the local Visitors Bureau for the area. We strive to attract tourists to the area through advertising, events, customized packages and itinerary ideas. Countless inquires about our local activities, schools, businesses, and attractions are answered daily through our office. We send out dining, lodging, and shopping guides, tourism information, county and city maps, relocation packets, brochures, demographic information and special event information that result with more visitors to our area. K

enneth E.S. Platou has served as the President of Mercy Medical Center Mt. Shasta since April 2009. He came to Mercy from Montrose, Colorado, where he served as CEO of Montrose Memorial Hospital for nine years; prior to that he served as CEO of North Valley Hospital in Whitefish, Montana for 6 years. While there, he served on the Montana Hospital Association Board of Trustees and is the Past Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Colorado Hospital Association.

To his credit Ken is also the Past President of the Western Healthcare Alliance and an American Hospital Association Regional Policy Board Member. Ken earned his Masters in Hospital and Healthcare Administration from the University of Minnesota.

Since joining Mercy, Ken has facilitated the many growth opportunities the hospital has enjoyed. In February of 2011 Mercy Mt. Shasta Community Clinic opened its doors as a Rural Health Clinic (RHC) focused on serving the needs of the residents of southern Siskiyou County and in June of 2012 the Lake Shastina Community Clinic became the second RHC. 2014 saw the opening of the Dignity Health Pine Street Clinic in Mt. Shasta which is the third RHC in the Mercy Mt. Shasta family. No-

vember of 2011 saw the year-long digital mammography campaign become a reality quickly followed with Breast MRI capabilities in September of 2012. Ken’s community outreach and strength of donor relationships assisted in the success of the campaign and brought state of the art mammography services to the community.

Under Ken’s leadership Mercy Medical Mt. Shasta was recognized by the Rural Health Association as being one of the Top 100 Critical Access Hospital’s nationwide in addition to being named number 1 in the Dignity Health 42 hospital system for quality care and patient satisfaction.

Ken is a proud member of the Mt. Shasta Rotary Club and an active board member of the Siskiyou County Economic Development Council and sits on the Board of Directors of Partnership HealthPlan of California. Ken and his wife Becky thoroughly enjoy living and playing in Mt. Shasta.

rystal Geyser Water Company is a beverage company based in Calistoga, California. We started our company in 1977 with a mission to provide people with healthy, pure, sparkling mineral water. It took us two-and-a-half years of studying survey maps, exploring water sources, and making countless taste tests before finding our ideal water source at the base of Mount St. Helena in a remote part of Napa Valley. Our highest priority is to preserve and maintain the refreshing natural character of our water sources.

In 1981 we introduced our first citrus-flavored mineral waters. The idea caught on and spread to Germany and eventually throughout Europe.

In the US, the New York State Chamber of Commerce is the oldest and was formed in 1768. The first local chamber was founded in Charleston, South Carolina in 1773. This was followed by New Haven, Connecticut and then to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1800. By 1870 there were 40 local Chambers of Commerce in the United States. Today there are over 5,000 Chambers of Commerce.
