He is a Latinx writer who has always been drawn to classic stories and enjoys retelling them for a contemporary audience. Born and raised (mostly) in Texas, Rey now lives in Los Angeles, where he loves to write—that is, when he’s not hiking with his dog, Toby, playing Mario Kart with friends, or reading. Monica M. Magaña is an illustrator from Los Angeles who has worked in advertising, film, animation, and TTRPGs. She enjoys drawing fantastical characters, reading whimsical stories, and pushing for bold colors. With Doña Quixote being her first foray into publishing, she has found a new love in drawing comics. Monica now lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, with her husband, Jon, drawing, drinking as much tea as possible, checking her Animal Crossing island, and playing Dungeons & Dragons with friends.

Have you ever wondered HOW DO YOU MAKE A GRAPHIC NOVEL?! It’s a lot of work, but YOU too can make a comic. And we’re going to teach you how by showing you our process…

STEP ONE Script The first thing you need to do is WRITE your comic. Here’s how I like to write, by writing each page with panels and dialogue in mind.

STEP TWO Sketch / Pencils The next step is to have an artist start DRAWING your comic. Some writers are also illustrators, so you can write AND draw if you’re up for it. Try sketching out what you want your page to look like…

STEP THREE Inks Once you’re happy with your sketches, you finalize them by INKING them. Some artists do this on paper with pen or marker, and some do it on the computer. It’s up to you what works best.

STEP FOUR Colors Okay, the sketches and inks are done… Now time to add some COLOR. Once again, you can do this on paper with markers, colored pencils, or even crayons. But you can also do it digitally.

STEP FIVE Lettering Last but not least, time to add some WORD BALLOONS, a step known as LETTERING. Go back to the script and check out your dialogue. If you’re happy with it, add it to the page.

STEP SIX Share it Now comes the best part… Pat yourself on the back. You’re done! Share your new comic with friends and family.
