Just as we spring into a new year, our paper is budding with new ideas and teeming with energy.

This issue we aimed to consider a more personal topic. As we gathered stories and profiles, a phrase fell right onto the white board: “uniquely you.” It’s our passions, ideas and opinions that shape our identity, so we sought to find some unpopular tastes and students with fascinating passions. Whether they be those nominated for Tallahassee’s Best and Brightest competition or students’ opinions on mixing açai bowls, we felt both should be highlighted.

In this issue, we want to challenge you to consider those opinions, passions and hobbies that define your personality. Perhaps reading about others’ will help you identify your own

SPOTLIGHT ON Yeti Investment Team

by hunter grant | staff writer The stock market is a place where big gains, losses and everything in between can be made. However, investing is not the lottery. It requires skill, dedication and a high amount of research. Each year the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business holds a free investment simulation for high school students. The competition has a three round of elimination style competition for the teams involved. Our Maclay Marauder team, the Yeti Investors, has advanced to the second round of the competition with 10 other teams.

After having a successful first-year in 2019, the Yeti Investors have once again moved onto the Regional Finale. This year’s regional round will take place in San Francisco, California, as opposed to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where it occurred last year. The 2019 team was comprised of Collin Roberts, Madeleine Roberts, Hayden McDaniel and Madelyn Stout. The team took home second place in the Regional Finale, which earned them a spot at the International Finale - where they won third place.

This year, the 2020 Maclay Marauder investment team captain is sophomore Collin Roberts. He and his team - seniors Eli Jaffe and Madeleine Roberts; sophomores Nirmay Bhanderi and Hayden McDaniel; and freshman Isabel McDaniel - have been working on their portfolio all year.

The investment team members all joined the team because they have a passion for

investments.

“I have always had an interest in business because my father runs an investment firm,” Collin Roberts said. “Madeleine and I read about the Wharton investment competition online last year.”

His sister, senior Madeleine Roberts, was the team’s captain last year.

“This time around I’ve worked with other members to develop an investment strategy for the long-term portion of our portfolio,” Madeline Roberts said. “That involved researching a bunch of stocks and discussing screening criteria with my teammates.”

Stock picking is no easy task and the team of six has been successful enough to move on to the next round. According to the Wharton School of Business, the competition in this particular event makes the challenge even more difficult. In fact, it is a global experience, and so far it has engaged high school students in more than 30 countries around the world.

As with any team, there are always challenges while in the midst of competition.

“The most difficult part is trying to smoothly run a six person team,” Collin Roberts said. “Because everyone has conflicting schedules, which makes it difficult to plan meetings.”

Despite the difficulties of organizing the team, the Marauder investment group has high hopes.

ZAPing through the trails Maclay Hosts ZAP Endurance athletes in preparation for Olympic trials

by ellie casteel | print editor-in-chief Whether you know it or not, Maclay gains two-month visitors in early January. However, they aren’t striding the halls or munching along with us in the cafeteria; they are back in the trails and on the track, running tens of miles a day.

For the past 17 years, ZAP Endurance athletes and coaches from Blowing Rock, NC, have traveled to Tallahassee to train for the Olympic trials marathon. This year, the marathon is February 29 in Atlanta, Georgia. ZAP stands for Zika and Andy Palmer, the organization’s founders. “ZAP was founded in 2002 by Zika and Andy Palmer. Andy was the team’s Tallahassee connection; he earned

his PhD in sports psychology from FSU in the mid-nineties,” athlete Joanna Thompson said.

Former XC and Track Head Coach Gary Droze knew Andy, adding the Maclay tie.

“Andy Palmer was a PhD student in sports psychology and that’s how I knew him. He knew Tallahassee was a great place to train,” Droze said.

Capital City Kids Take on Washington D.C.

by gavin rolle | staff writer From January 27 to 31, the 7th graders took a field trip all the way to our nation’s Capital in Washington D.C. There, the students visited government buildings and museums, as well as participated in activities.

Students were able to go to the Capitol building, the White House, other government buildings and multiple monuments.

“There is so much history and so many great leaders that are so worth investigating in D.C., and understanding how things are done in our government is so important,” varsity football Coach Lance Ramer said. “Seeing a living history, D.C. is a classroom without walls.”

They visited the Bureau of Engraving and Printing where money is printed: “It was cool seeing how money is printed, how the workers are trusted and how much money is printed a day,” seventh grade student Kareem Dawoud said.

Students also got to visit some of the museums located in Washington D.C. One of the museums visited was the new National Museum of African American History and Culture, which opened in 2016.

“I was most excited for the African American museum because it’s part of my heritage,” seventh grader Amyra Garba’hima said. “My favorite part was learning more about the backstory of racism in America.”

As one of their activities, the students got to see a hockey game on their trip. Not only did they get to watch the Capitals play the Predators, but they also got the chance to ice skate themselves.

“My favorite part of the trip was ice skating because I had an overall great time with my friends,” Garba’hima said.

Much of this trip is about exposing students to new things, according to Ramer. While there is much more than just hockey and ice skating to do in D.C., these are two of the activities that are emphasized more on fun.

“We went ice skating, and I think just seeing them try something for the first time, whether they were good or not, was just awesome,” Ramer said.

This trip’s purpose is to expose seventh graders to the vastness of our nation’s capital.

In fact, giving in to Groupthink is human nature, and per the Forbes article “The Problem of Groupthink: How to Encourage More Independent Thinking,” “humans are a deeply social species, and according to experts, social factors — like peer pressure, lack of diversity and stereotyping of outsiders — often drive groupthink.”

High school is fraught with these social pressures, and fitting in is the goal of most

students. This environment can force students to conform; however, there can be a balance. Still make friends and be a part of a group, but practice actively considering other viewpoints. Think about what decisions are being made and speak out if you disagree. Complying with social norms is a bad pattern to establish, as it can have a ripple effect in the future.

Instead of constantly groupthinking, choose the harder option. Every viewpoint can add something new to a discussion, and by expressing yourself, you can make real change. Make that club that celebrates your passion, have conversations that are important to life on campus and ignore the pressure that others apply to conform.

Consciousness and independent thinking shape the world, so instead of passively observing, embrace living; embrace uniqueness.

In one episode, Kimmel makes a petition for women to sign to end women’s suffrage, as the word suffrage sounds similar to suffering. People actually signed this petition believing that they were ending the suffering of women.

Later this year, the 100th anniversary of women gaining suffrage, the right to vote, will occur, and recognizing this anniversary is essential to honoring the fight for equal rights and to promoting an educated population.

What began as a dream of suffragettes turned into women all over the United States being able to impact politics, and this event deserves remembrance.

The women’s rights movement began in the 19th century because the antislavery movement caused activists to wonder why women also didn’t have equal rights. One prominent leader in the fight for women’s right to vote, Lucretia Mott, was interested in the antislavery movement, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, another leader, also joined the abolitionist fight.

Mott and Stanton began conversing on the topic of women’s rights after being barred from participating in the 1840 World Anti-Slavery Convention in London. As a result, they called a convention to discuss women’s rights in Seneca Falls, New York on July 19-20, 1848, known as the Seneca Falls Convention.

The Seneca Falls Convention was a major

At this convention, Stanton outlined her grievances in the “Declaration of Sentiments,” which served as a call to action for women to petition for their rights. The results of the overall convention was the passing of 12 resolutions, the ninth one addressing women’s right to vote.

This ninth resolution was passed narrowly, and many people considered women being able to vote a ridiculous concept, withdrawing their support of the movement.

Despite the movement’s controversial nature, the women’s rights movement continued. Lucy Stone held a follow- up convention in 1850 in Worcester, MA that consisted of Eastern suffragists. Another convention in 1852 occurred in Syracuse, NY, and it was led by Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, who became the faces of the women’s rights movement. Many more conventions followed these, as well as attempts to convince states to add women’s right to vote to their constitutions, which the Territory of Wyoming did do.

In order to secure the rights of women nationwide, a federal amendment to the U.S. Constitution was neccessary, so in 1869 the National Woman Suffrage Association was founded for this purpose and led by Stanton and Anthony. Another organization was also founded in 1869 by Stone called the American Woman Suffrage Association, and in 1890, the two merged, known now as the National American Woman Suffrage Association.

Following the creation of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, it took about 28 years, 1918, for women to obtain suffrage equal to men in 15 states. After several failed attempts to pass the suffrage amendment federal, WWI became the major turning point in the battle for women’s rights, as women gained responsibilities while the men were fighting. Women took an active role in the workplace and kept the country running. Also in 1918, both parties had backed the women’s suffrage amendment, and women’s suffrage became a reality.

On August 26, 1920, the 19th amendment was adopted into the Constitution, giving women the right to vote. It states: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” This was a huge victory after many years of fighting for equality, and it set the stage for future feminist movements.

Today, women are still fighting for equality, for the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment and for equal pay. Inspired by suffragettes, women have fought to gain equal footing and repeatedly broken the glass ceiling.

By commemorating those who fought for suffrage, we acknowledge a legacy of female empowerment and a history of strong women.

The 100th anniversary causes us to look back, see what progress has been made and recognize what still needs to be done for women’s rights.

While no teenager should be subject to demeaning or derogatory language, in politics, anything goes. They should expect and be ready for all of these things when becoming an activist, especially one with a major following.

However, while these are all stores people enjoy and spend time and money with, there are many more advantages to shopping with a local small business.

Small businesses offer economic, ethical, environmental and local community benefits to their supporters.

Economically, supporting small businesses significantly boosts tax income for the state government. This is beneficial for the entire community, as their local tax dollars will likely aid in paying for things such as public education, health insurance or personal benefits for those in need of assistance.

Ethically, small businesses tend to be more cautious when it comes to treating their employees with respect and meet their lawful requirements. A corporate company tends to be more likely to cut their overworked employees on pay. While this is not the truth with every large company, it has been shown this does happen because the risk of getting caught is usually not as crushing to larger businesses as it is to the local, smaller businesses with less money. Unlike small businesses, corporate companies can afford to pay the price if they

Everyone has a personality that exerts uniqueness - that exerts what it means to be themselves. Attitude, character, beliefs, thoughts and behavior can make up a person’s personality, which is what makes them special. A person’s unique differences is what makes them stand out, and the world needs it.

Milk before Cereal Sophomore Collin Roberts and Math teacher Joseph McClendon share an uncommon habit: pouring the milk into the bowl before the cereal. Both have different reasons for the habit, yet they both choose to miss out on the delicious sound of cereal hitting an empty bowl.

“I need to judge the proportion of milk to cereal and it’s a lot easier to judge how much cereal is going into the milk instead of milk into the cereal,” Roberts said.

Roberts has tried inverting the process but hated it and returned to his milk-first method.

Mr. McClendon feels the same, but votes milk-first because he enjoys a crunchy breakfast.

“I cannot stand soggy cereal, so I always put the milk in first and then the cereal,” McClendon said.

He defends his method by saying that it’s the fastest way to get a crunchy bite. Switching the contents takes too long.

From home-made recipes, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) and Popeyes - amongst others - you can find fried chicken in many different places. However, despite many people enjoying this crunchy and delicious delicacy, there is still some who aren’t quite as taken as others.

For instance, senior AJ Miller dislikes this staple southern food. He finds the bones disgusting, yet likes other ways to eat the meat.

“I won’t eat fried chicken. I don’t like going to Popeyes or KFC or anything because they have the bone in the chicken,” Miller said. “I’ll eat chicken tenders, but the bone-in ones gross me out.”

Miller added that he doesn’t enjoy eating the southern delicacy, but still likes bone-in wings.

tik tok The social media platform, TikTok, has exploded onto the smartphone screens of teenagers all over the country. From viral memes to famous dances, TikTok has managed to draw in millions of viewers.

However, not everyone has been drawn in by the videos of people dancing to “Renegade” or of manipulating themselves through visual effects.

Senior Owen Tabah and freshman Percy Roopnarine both dislike the app and aren’t enthralled by the short videos. Despite the laughter the app has brought to many, these two students choose to not take part in the popular fad.

“I hate TikTok because people just become obsessed with it. I don’t find any TikToks funny,” Tabah said. “I don’t like the idea of TikTok famous people and everyone is just looking for clout.”

Roopnarine dislike of the platform is similar to Tabah’s in terms of his viewpoint on the type of people on the app. “People are fake on there,” Roopnarine said. “I don’t like it at all.”

Anything from a reminder note to a ‘way to go’ sticker is a no for Heuchan, as the feeling grosses him out.

“I’m not cool with stickers or ink on my skin,” Heuchan said. “I don’t like to watch other people have it on their skin either.”

He says the dislike is rooted in the fact that he’s a clean person.

“It might be because I’m a germ-freak and I just see it as dirty,” Heuchan said. “I think the stickers is a childhood thing because people always wore them on their faces and that’s gross.”

Affair by madelyn stout | operational editor-in-chief From shirts to dresses to jewelry- there are many things that can make an outfit uniquely you. However, it’s a certain senior’s shoes that makes or breaks her outfit. From Converse to Vans, Katie Lyons has a unparalleled love affair with shoes.

“I always want my shoes to make a statement, especially given that I almost solely wear t-shirts. My shoes give me a way to make my t-shirt and jeans ‘me,’” Lyons said.

When picking out her outfit for the day, Lyons always keeps the colors of each piece in the back of her mind. She admitted that she mostly wears t-shirts – which makes it easy to match color-wise with one of her 30 plus pairs of shoes.

“I think it’s super neat that she has shoes to match every outfit,” senior Hannah Hosay – and friend of Lyons – said. “Not only does she match the colors, she sometimes matches the patterns.”

Lyons also shared that Converse is her favorite shoe brand: “I love Converse just because there are so many different designs, so I can always find fun ones that will match my outfits.”

While Vans - another popular brand that Lyons likes also offers a variety of shoes, Lyons admitted that they are a close second for her.

When it comes to choosing her favorite pair, Lyons doesn’t have one that reigns supreme – instead her favorites consist of three pairs of Converse. That is her the grey and maroon colored pair, a pair with rainbow soles and one with silver and aqua diamonds.

If you look closely, you can sometimes find Lyons wearing one of her multiple pairs of Marvel-themed shoes.

As an avid Marvel lover, Lyons will often wear a shirt from her massive collection of Marvel shirts - which she estimates around 30 - with her themed shoes.

“I think it’s cool that she has a unique style and she isn’t afraid to express it,” senior Joanna Kupiszewski said. “It makes her different and it’s fun to see which pair she’ll have on in class.”

Though Lyons adores collecting her neat shoes, there is more to this collector than what meets the eye. In addition to her shoes, Lyons is also fascinated by welding – so much so that she became certified. It was in the seventh grade when Lyons first began welding.

“I have made sculptures out of metal including a threefoot tall t-rex and a pterodactyl with a wingspan of around four feet,” Lyons said. “I also made smaller pieces, including a dragonfly, butterfly and a scorpion.”

Lyons continues to weld many different types of sculptures and sees this activity as a unique hobby.

However, Lyons also has many other interests – which include the various clubs she’s apart of. She is an active

member in Anchor club and not only is she the president of the school’s chapter of the Science National Honor Society, but she also sits on the leadership board of Spectrum and serves as the president of the Computer Science National Honor Society.

Recently selected as a national honorable mention recipient of the National Center for Women and Information Technology’s (NCWIT) Award for Aspirations in Computing, Lyons was among 360 honorable mentions given out to students around the country. Even more so, she was in the top 400 out of roughly 4700 applicants.

“It is exciting to be recognized nationally with other students interested in impacting the world through computer science and technology,” Lyons said.

In terms of her future goals, Lyons intends to continue on her educational path - all while wearing one of her many pairs of sneakers - to seek degrees in neuroscience and biochemistry.

Age differences around the world

You’re an eager 16-year-old American teen, ready to obtain your driver’s license. You and your guardian hop in the car and drive over to the DMV. As you wait to take the driver’s test, your nerves buzz and butterflies roll within your stomach.

Now imagine living in wthe United Kingdom (UK), where the legal driving age is 17. Having to wait an entire extra year to drive would be a bummer! Yet, every country has its own minimum age for each legal activity.

Driving is fairly similar for many countries and especially for these four countries: the United States, the UK, Australia and Canada. Australia, the United States and Canada all legally permit 16-year-old teens to drive. The outlier here is the UK with an age minimum of 17. In fact, the UK is debating moving the driving age minimum to 18 because statistics show that more than a fifth of deaths on British roads in 2011 involved drivers aged 17-24.

“It depends on how good UK driving courses are,” senior Will Kirkpatrick said. “I don’t think increasing the age will do anything. Young kids will still be dumb and they need the experience.”

However, physics teacher Dr. William Perry disagrees, “Impulse control is something that gets better as you get older,” he said. “I would be curious if they will keep the age you can drive with an adult in the car the same in order to build more experience in the driver.”

Just as the UK is considering moving up the driving age, the United States just recently moved up the minimum age to smoke or own tobacco products. This law was passed on December 19, 2019.

Nationwide, outbreaks of lung diseases and smoking related deaths have continued to increase causing the government and the FDA to take appropriate action.

As with driving, smoking restrictions also raises numerous arguments.

“If I can go to war and die for my country,” Kirkpatrick said, “I should be able to smoke.”

However, Dr. Perry, also an expert in nicotine and smoking through his PhD studies, has his own opinion on the subject.

“I think that one of the bigger problems with that is the difference between an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old is less apparent. So, it will be easier to enforce,” Dr. Perry said.

“Whether or not it will be a better deterrent is not clear because most high schoolers know recently graduated students who will bend those laws for them, but I hope it will be more effective.”

Australia, Canada and the UK all still have their legal minimum age set at 18, but perhaps they will move it up as well.

Yet, the most variety of age minimums comes with drinking.

The United States takes the cake with the highest minimum drinking age of 21. Controversy over this age minimum has brewed for years.

According to Professor Ruth C. Engs of Applied Health Sciences at Indiana University, Bloomington, although the legal purchase age is 21 years of age, a majority of college students under this age consume alcohol but in an irresponsible manner.

“This is because drinking by these youth is seen as an enticing “forbidden fruit,” a “badge of rebellion against authority” and a symbol of “adulthood.” As a nation we have tried prohibition legislation twice in the past for controlling irresponsible drinking problems. This was during National Prohibition in the 1920s and state prohibition during the 1850s. These laws were finally repealed because they were unenforceable and because the backlash towards them caused other social problems. Today we are repeating history and making the same mistakes that occurred in the past. Prohibition did not work then and prohibition for young people under the age of 21 is not working now.”

Regardless of opinion and efficiency, every country has their own laws for teens and young adults with regulations being placed as each government sees fit. As the world continues to evolve, these regulations may continue to change with the end goal staying the same: protecting the youth and their future.

“Miss Americana” shows Swift’s cultural influence by emily dudley | general editor Known for sold out shows filled with screaming teenage girls, Taylor Swift has been a musical force throughout the past decade.

She recently released her documentary, “Miss Americana” on January 31 on Netflix. A different side of Swift is revealed, as she details how living with fame from such an early age affected her and what it means to be a woman in the music industry.

Gaining fame around the time most kids would be driving their cars for the first time, Swift began her career in the spotlight at the age of 15. A dedicated singer-songwriter, Swift wrote country songs that were deeply personal to her high school experience. Her fans connected with her words, shown through her sold-out concerts which were filled with constant approval. In the documentary, Swift reveals that applause and approval became her “belief system,” and the way that she validated herself was through others. The 2009 Video Music Awards (VMAs) rocked this belief system. Upon receiving the award for the Best Female Video, Swift went up on stage, ready for that validation, but she was instead met with confrontation. Kanye West stormed the stage, and he announced to the entire audience that he would let Taylor finish her acceptance speech but that Beyoncé had deserved the award. This moment was a turning point for Swift, and she highlights it as a traumatic moment for her. She believed at the time the audience was booing her, when in reality the audience was booing Kanye, and she felt her belief system crumbling.

After Kanye’s display, Swift’s world was shaken, and the situation continued upon the release of Kanye’s song “Famous” in April of 2016.

Per Swift, she did not approve of some of his explicit lyrics, but Kim Kardashian West, wife of Kanye, released footage that made it appear as though Swift consented. Post this ordeal, many people began calling Swift a snake, and she became the subject of the most trending hashtag on Twitter in the world, #Taylorisoverparty.

Swift speaks out as to what this did to her mental state, saying that she went into hiding from the public and would not be seen out. She believed that everyone hated her, and when she did return to the stage, it was as though she was a wounded animal, lashing out. This lashing out is seen in her aggressive album, “Reputation,” that was released in an emotional response to the backlash. Clearly, Swift bounced back from the

controversy as her Reputation tour amassed the highest gross income in US history.

Swift also details other struggles, notably an eating disorder. As she grew up under intense scrutiny, Swift developed body image issues.

Known for her slender frame, she discusses how being a size two was not natural for her body; she would tell others that she was simply eating well and working out, but in reality, she wasn’t eating because seeing one picture taken where she believed she looked bad would send her into a spiral of not eating. Swift says that spending concerts dizzy and on the verge of passing out was the norm for her. She currently is at a much healthier size and actively works against the unhealthy mindset that she previously developed.

Obviously, Swift suffered from struggles that many other musicians relate to, but her biggest struggle was one relatable to all women. Her team created her image as that of a nice girl, who played her songs and withheld her opinions.

She had been instructed to not express her political opinions, which frequently conflicted with her internal sense of right and wrong. They wanted her to be a woman earning top dollar but remaining silent. Swift broke away from this nice girl image, and she came out against right wing Tennessee Senate candidate Marsha Blackburn, calling her “Trump in a wig.” Swift publically threw her support behind Blackburn’s opponent Democrat Phil Bredson, despite warnings from her team that her career would suffer from her political statements. Bredson did not win the election, but Swift was integral in increasing youth voter turnout.

Other than Trump saying that he likes “Taylor’s music about 25% less now,” Swift is still thriving in her industry, creating politically charged songs on her newest album Lover, such as “You Need to Calm Down” and “The Man.” Both of these songs are shown being created in the documentary with an emphasis on how important the meanings behind them are.

“Miss Americana” showed Swift in a new depth, and it felt extremely personal and authentic. It deserves five out of five stars because its message reached beyond the typical ‘Swiftie’ fan base. It followed the trials of fame, while also addressing struggles that all women face. At no point did it feel like the whole point of the documentary was to promote Swift but rather explain the person behind the artist.

A Guide to Closing Businesses by myriel byfield | staff The happenings of large retail businesses is always present, but rarely do people actually pay attention.

Last year, headlines flourished with many well known stores across the country filing for bankruptcy and closing many of their locations. This caught the eye of Americans as many of our beloved stores began to disappear In 2019, around 9,300 retail stores all across the country closed. Most businesses that were forced to close didn’t just disappear - they converted their business models into online stores. Their products are still being sold, just not necessarily in physical brick and mortar buildings. This lasting incident has been nicknamed the “retail apocalypse” by some because of the staggering numbers of shops forced to shut down. A few chains that closed for good or were deeply affected were Payless ShoeSource, Sears, Forever 21, Gymboree, Dress Barn, Charlotte Russe, Toys R Us, Kmart, Party City, Walgreens, Barneys and many more.

Some of these stores had already filed for bankruptcy in recent years but began actively shutting doors in 2019. This came as a surprise to many Americans. Stores that had been around for most of their lives or possibly longer were suddenly almost completely gone, and no one knew how to react.

One example of this is Sears. Founded in 1893, it had been one of the main stores for multiple generations and an anchor tenant in many malls. After first filing for bankruptcy in late 2018, they were forced to close a few hundred stores because of how in debt the company was (and still is). This is just one example out of many beloved brands that encountered issues in the past few years.

What some fail to realize is that when an anchor store, or any for that matter, close, the workers there lose their jobs and prospective

e m p l o y m e n t opportunities diminish. As the numbers of stores closing grows, the amount of positions available to people decreases. Those in smaller communities and towns are especially affected as malls are one of the main sources of employment.

Along with unemployment, another growing problem with store closures is that malls all across the country are being left almost completely empty. The store space, especially those meant for anchor stores, isn’t usually meant for anything else making it a hard space to refill. In fact, many smaller businesses can’t afford to pay the rent, ultimately leaving a deserted storefront and sometimes a deserted mall. This has been an issue for as long as malls have existed, but with the emergence of the online shopper, this issue is now more prevalent than ever.

As we live in the digital age, many have steered clear of entering stores and instead opt to shop on their iPhones and laptops. Since many people will order products off of Amazon or other websites and online brands, there is less demand for physical stores and malls.

According to a recent report by Credit Suisse, one in four malls is supposed to be closed by 2022.

Some view this as a new beginning, but most believe the opposite. Combined with the fact that larger companies tend to put small or local stores out of business, this could be problematic.

This “retail apocalypse” hasn’t ended, but is rather still in the beginning stages. While online shopping is convenient, it is important to still shop the brick and mortar stores. Malls across America have been the backbone of leisure shopping and holiday rushes, but soon they could be desolate buildings with no future in sight.

We’ve all seen the commercials. The 30 seconds of glamour drenched in gold that captures our gaze each January.

It’s the Art-Deco reminiscent evening during which we lose ourselves in the allure of cinematographic excellence, the congregation of talent that unifies for one celebratory night in the name of film. It’s an eve during which we retrogress to the films of the year that marked our souls, a night during which we unearth the gold of humanity through the medium of cinematography.

For all that indulge in the beauty of film, nothing compares to the The Academy Awards, otherwise known as The Oscars.

Or, at least, nothing should compare to The Oscars. To channel J.R.R Tolkien’s meditation upon the corruption of human experience, “all that is gold does not glitter.” Within Tolkien’s aphorism exists a degree of alignment, parallel to The Academy Awards: the evening of gold is not as glamorous as mass consumers receive it to be. We know The Oscars as an acknowledgement of artistic creation in the film industry; however, we fail to reckon with the truth that The Academy Awards rests upon. We fail to comprehend the fact that this industry is nourished by its marginalization of female creators.

On Monday, January 13, as the nominations for the 2020 Academy Awards presentation flooded into existence, an eruption of disappointment flooded in simultaneously. It was not the nomination that stung, but the lack thereof; not a single woman was nominated for best director, despite top films hailing from the creative space of females. According to Buzzfeed, powerful female directors such as Greta

Gerwig, who was not nominated for best director despite her film Little Women garnering “six other nominations,” were snubbed by the Academy.

The problem, however, is not that the equality of gender in award recognition is not proportional this year. The issue, as evidenced by The New York Times, is that gender inequality is normal, a recurrent theme employed by The Academy Awards, a once “exclusive club primarily for white men.” The Academy Awards have existed for 92 years, yet only one woman has ever won an Oscar for best director, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Furthermore, only five women have “ever been nominated in this category.” The homogeneous nature of The Oscars evidently lurks ubiquitously in the Hollywood film scene, despite the prevalence of female cinematographic success.

According to a recent study from the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, the year 2019 witnessed a significant increase in the number of women directing films and even produced the highest number of female directors “since the study began 13 years ago.” Moreover, researchers at USC determined in the same study that of the top 100 highest-grossing films of 2019, “12 of them were directed by women as reported in the study. To sum up their findings, researchers looked to Metacritic scores.

When studying the Metacritic scores of top movies over the last 13 years, the USC Annenberg study found no difference, distinguishing factor in the “critic scores of films directed by men and those of films directed by women.”

Such evidence points to a dark truth, a truth plagued by

misogynistic attitudes and gender oppression in the power hierarchy of Hollywood. It is utter nothingness that distinguishes a male-directed film as opposed to a female-directed film, yet, internalized sexism in the cinematographic industry has erupted a wave of oppression inflicted upon females that even the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has investigated on the grounds of “discrimination in hiring practices over the lack of women directors.”

Absorbed in the golden glamour of our television screens, we’re left to wonder: what does this mean for us? In essence,

it means everything to us. As beings, our humanity rests upon the exchange of stories. Our bodies are mere vessels for the narratives that flow from our cores. Awards, like The Oscars, are vital as they reflect a societal agenda, a determination of which stories are allowed to be told. When we ignore the creative work of female director’s, we ignore the female voice, abolish a sense of agency for women. Garnering an Oscar win is not simply an acquisition of a goldplated trophy; it’s a win for the entirety of womankind, humankind. We deserve an equal opportunity to have our stories be heard.

Maclay students react to basketball legend’s tragic death

As many are already aware because of the stream of posts on all social media platforms, former NBA basketball player Kobe Bryant died on January 26, 2020.

Bryant’s unexpected death was the result of a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California. Based on the most current investigations, the crash was due to low visibility from fog and no radio connection to the controller.

Bryant and eight others were killed in the fatal crash. The eight additional victims included Gianna Maria Onore Bryant - Bryant’s 13 year old daughter, two of Gianna’s teammates and their parents, an assistant basketball coach and the pilot.

Fans all around the world are mourning the loss of Bryant and the others in the accident. He is not only remembered as a great basketball player, but as an exceptional global citizen.

The Maclay boys’ varsity soccer team is fighting for their first state title since 2017.

On Wednesday, February 12 at 6p.m., Maclay held another playoff game on Frank Shaw Field. Now in the regional quarter-finals, the opponent was once again John Paul II Catholic School (JPII).

With a win of 9-0 the previous game, which was also against JPII, the final score of 3-0 was a shock to players, coaches and fans.

“I’m proud of how far we’ve come, but we can’t let our record get the best of us,” senior rightwing Andrew Rentz said. “I think we went into this game too confident and it didn’t work out well for us.”

After the score of 0-0 at halftime, the Marauders came back and stepped up their game, scoring three goals. Two goals came from senior centermid Beecher Lewis and one from junior center-mid Mateus Bitencourt, with an assist from sophomore right-back Noah Greenstein. JPII had three free kicks throughout the game, while Maclay only took one due to a JPII handball. However, both teams were equal in the fact they each got one corner kick.

“We are at 19-0-0 at the moment and should be proud of our achievements to date,” Head Coach Andy Warner said.

“However, the playoffs provide an opportunity to reach a goal [of state champions].”

Following this win, the Marauders bounced back in their sweet sixteen match with a mercy rule in the regional semi-finals.

On Saturday, February 15, Maclay took on Lake Mary Prep School at 7 p.m. at Frank Shaw Field. In the first half, the Marauders made five goals. Four from Bitencourt and one from junior right-wing Michael Sweeney, with

the help of three assists from junior center-mid Drew Daunt. Maclay took five corner kicks from senior center-mid Luke Stockstill and three free kicks from junior center-back Cade Smith. Right before halftime, sophomore left-back Ryan Daunt was shown off the field with a yellow card, and senior left-back Walker Hicks took his position.

Still in the first half, Lake Mary Prep had zero corner kicks and zero goals.

However, they had nine free kicks.

Once both teams were back on the field post-halftime, Maclay ended the game 17 minutes early with a mercy rule. The final three goals came from Sweeney, freshman striker RJ Hosay and sophomore striker Eli Paddock.

Lake Mary Prep had zero corner kicks and three free kicks. The Marauders had five more corners; two from Stockstill, two from Rentz and one from Sweeney.

Two more free kicks came from Smith and Drew Daunt.

Another Maclay player, Bitencourt, was shown off the field with a yellow card, and was replaced by sophomore left-wing Colin Willet.

“There are 5 wins needed to lift a State Championship and that is our ultimate goal,” Warner said. “This years’ team has great technical skill and tactical knowledge, and are capable of going all the way.”

The Marauders’ next game was for the regional championship at home, Wednesday, February 19 at 6 p.m. They played their rival who kicked them out of playoffs last year, St. Johns Country Day School.
