We are a coeducational school catering to students from Year 7 to 13. Our success stems from the genuine care and support our dedicated team provides. LEARNING AT MC - JUNIOR We believe every student is capable of learning and achieving success. Learning at Mackenzie College is not confined to the classroom but is enhanced by engaging with our community and environment. We offer a wide and diverse range of learning opportunities aimed at not only developing content knowledge and, more importantly, teaching students how to learn so they can meet the challenges that they will face in our everchanging world.
Curriculum for Years 7 & 8 All students learn in composite classes that contain both year 7 and 8 students. The curriculum is diverse and exciting with a strong literacy and numeracy foundation enabling students to fully engage with learning as they move through the school. Students are taught by subject specialists in subject-specific rooms, which contributes to impressive achievement. Students at year 8 work towards achieving our Te Ara Award. This is awarded to students who achieve criteria across the four categories of effort, goal setting, self-management and participation in school events.
Curriculum for Years 9 & 10 Students are taught within their respective year groups, although there is the opportunity to accelerate students if it is in their best interest. All subjects remain compulsory, allowing a greater breadth of learning before subject specialisation which occurs from year 11. An important focus at this level is our Mackenzie College Diploma. LEARNING AT MC - SENIOR NCEA Mackenzie College has a history of outstanding success in National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) assessments. Students can choose from a range of subjects which incorporate a mixture of internal and external assessments. There is a wide range of pathways available from academic university-focused study to more ‘hands-on’ practical courses. Through distance learning and digital learning, the range of options open to students is comparable to those at much larger schools.
Gateway and Transition For students who have a trade-based pathway in their sights, Mackenzie College offers both Gateway and Vocational Pathway courses. Gateway provides the opportunity for students to experience a work placement for 20 days in schoool the year whilst also completing NCEA standards relevant to that trade. Vocational Pathways offer the opportunity for students to study with a tertiary provider (usually a Polytechnic) to complete training towards a specific skill or trade. Both courses are completed in conjunction with other traditional school subjects.
Learning Support and Enhancement at Mackenzie College We recognise that all students are at different levels of achievement and learn at different rates. With this in mind, we cater for these differences not only within the classroom, but also through having a highly effective Learning Support and Gifted and Talented Programme. This ensures students can all learn at their point of challenge, thus maximising their engagement and learning.

STUDENT CARE The well-being of our students is at the heart of everything we do. Our pastoral team comprising of form teachers, deans, SENCO and guidance counsellor are committed to providing personalised support, advice, and guidance to every student. They address not only academic concerns but also the personal challenges students might face. Our engaging house groups, meaningful form time, and peer support programme all contribute to the family environment. We aim to cultivate a whanāu feel that aims to ensure every student feels valued, supported, and empowered to achieve success.

SPORTS AT MC We pride ourselves on a culture of active engagement amongst our students. We punch above our weight in many competitions locally and nationally. We offer a diverse range of sporting and physical activities and encourage students to participate in both traditional school sports like rugby, netball, hockey, volleyball, and basketball, as well as explore less conventional avenues such as snowsports, mountain biking, Coast to Coast, equestrian, rock climbing and kayaking. At Mackenzie College, we believe in empowering our students through sports, promoting growth and fostering a lifelong love for an active lifestyle. School-wide Wednesday afternoon sport continues to provide an opportunity for students to get outside of the classroom and try something new. Our sports participations levels continue to be the highest in the region.

SNOWSPORTS Our school is lucky to be close to Mt Dobson and Round Hill ski fields, making it easy for students to enjoy skiing and snowboarding. In term 3, every Wednesday about 70 students grab this amazing opportunity to hit the slopes. It is an adventure they eagerly look forward to, creating memorable experiences and fostering friendships. Skiing and snowboarding have become a significant part of our school experience. We are fortunate to have four staff members who are trained ski instructors and several students have taken up the opportunity to complete their instructor qualifications.

ARTS / CULTURE PERFORMING ARTS AND MUSIC The performing arts are strongly supported by our students with many students currently engaged in musical instrument lessons through the itinerant music programme. Students are able to showcase their talents throughout the year in performances such as our annual young performers’ concert and the musical roadshow. Whole school musical events include the house singing competition (where the four houses battle for house points), and the iconic lip sync battle.
KAPA HAKA Our kapa haka group is active in promoting te reo Māori (the language) and tikanga Māori (the protocols) in the College and across our community. Our haka, ‘Puia!’, has been composed and choreographed for the College by Awatea Edwin. It is used in ceremonies throughout the year including the welcoming of manuhiri, or visitors, to our school during the traditional mihi whakatau or powhiri.

3-DAY LEARNING EVENTS Our 3-Day Learning Events run twice a year. One of the significant advantages of the 3DLE is the breadth of experiences it offers. Students can participate in diverse activities such as community service projects, outdoor adventures, cultural programmes, skill development workshops, and leadership training. This diversity ensures that students can explore their interests, discover new passions, and develop a well-rounded skill set. 3DLE facilitate increased interaction between students and teachers in a more relaxed and informal setting. This fosters stronger relationships, open communication, and a deeper understanding of students’ individual needs and aspirations.
