Police Briefs Stolen car BETWEEN 10pm and 6am (April 29 to April 30) a thief allegedly gained entry into a unit on Petersen Street in North Mackay. Once inside of the unit, an unknown offender located car keys in a glass bowl on top of the refrigerator and gained access to a white 2013 model Hyundai station wagon, with registration plates 195 AL3, parked in the driveway. The car was then stolen. Anyone who may have information about the car’s current location or the offence itself is encouraged to contact police.

Home entry

BETWEEN 8.15am and 12.15pm on April 29 an unknown offender allegedly gained entry into a home on Fuljames Street in Proserpine. The offender then allegedly opened a side gate and smashed a bedroom window to gain access. The residents returned home to discover that all of the drawers and cupboards in two of the bedrooms had been opened and searched.

It appears that nothing had been stolen at this time. This offence happened during daylight hours and it is likely that the thief made noise in the process of breaking in. Police are urging anyone who may of seen or heard anything to contact them as soon as possible.

Recharging an issue for electric cars

NORTH Queensland’s electric car numbers will remain negligible until the cost of electric cars goes down and high-speed, rather than 45-minute, recharging stations are commonplace.

The Mackay Local News found there is only one electric car charging station in Mackay, which takes 45 minutes to charge a car.

The RACQ’s Mackay charging station has been installed for some time and has only charged 411 electric cars so far.

However, it is difficult to drive an electric car to Moranbah and to other centres in the Isaac Shire, as there are no electric car charging stations inland of Mackay.

But along the coast, there are single electric car charging stations for a small number of electric car owners who accept recharging breaks when driving south to Gladstone and north to Townsville.

There are single electric car recharging stations at Carmilla, Rockhampton and Gladstone, while northbound there are charging stations at Proserpine, Bowen, Ayr and Townsville.

However, despite regional charging problems, the RACQ’s Brisbane-based Dr Rebecca Michael said more charging stations

are now available, which she hoped would encourage drivers to switch to electric vehicles (EVs).

“Electric vehicle charging stations are rolling out across Queensland, as part of the Electric Vehicle Super-Highway, Dr Michael said.

“Drivers can feel confident that they can travel across much of Queensland and, for most people, home charging will be a necessity.”

However The Mackay Local News has been advised of some home-charging stations doubling household electricity costs.

Hyundai charges $1995 for an eight-hour overnight charger and faster home chargers cost about ten times this price at about $15,000. This is to power Hyundai’s small, four-door, electric Ionic which currently costs $52,000.

Electric car proponents also hope that office chargers will be provided by employers.

But without significant tax incentives and grants, employers may resist this unnecessary cost, especially when it currently costs employers nothing for staff to get to work.

But Dr Michael said the RACQ has supported the introduction of new charging infrastructure in

workplaces to encourage uptake.

“This will allow employees to power up their vehicles while at work,” Dr Michael said.

“This year, the RACQ will also install EV chargers throughout Queensland in its commercial property assets for use by staff.

Currently, electric cars are expensive for motorists in the Mackay, Whitsunday and Isaac regions (see table on right).

Dr Michael added that when we start to see a healthy usedcar market for electric vehicles, more Queenslanders will be able to switch from petrol to electric vehicles.

“If there is increased take up in businesses using EVs as fleet vehicles, that will lead to manufacturers being more confident to release more models locally,” she said.

“If there are more secondhand EVs on the market, it’s a simple case of supply and demand.”

Dr Michael said that like conventional vehicles, range will be dependent on road conditions, load and driving style.

“But not all EV’s can tow a caravan or trailer, as this could affect how far an electric vehicle can be driven,” she said.

Tax on EVs becoming a problem

A 44-year-old Jubilee Pocket man has been served with a notice to appear in court for multiple alleged offences following a traffic intercept on April 27 at 2.45pm on Jubilee Pocket Road.

It is alleged that officers from the Whitsunday Police Station stopped a Holden Commodore station wagon. It is further alleged that officers learned at the time of intercept that the Holden station wagon was subject to an immobilisation notice and the 44-year-old driver held a disqualified drivers licence. After further conversation with officers, the 44-year-old man was taken to the Whitsunday Police Station where he was issued with a notice to appear, facing several charges. The man is due to appear in the Proserpine Magistrates Court on May 17.

PREMIER Palaszczuk has been asked not to tax electric cars, even though more electric vehicles are being driven on Queensland Roads.

“Currently 82 percent of motorists’ petrol tax is returned to road and rail transport infrastructure,” RAQ’s Head of Public Policy, Dr Rebecca Michael said.

“But electric vehicle (EV) owners don’t pay any road tax and only pay for normal vehicle registration, plus cheaper two percent stamp duty,” she said.

In comparison, motorists pay tax of about 46.97 cents for a litre of petrol costing about $1.32.

This means that without new taxes on electric cars North Queensland’s road funding and road maintenance is at risk.

Dr Michael said “we think it’s fair that electric vehicles pay their way, as vehicle and road taxes need to be consistent across Australia.

“We don’t want to discourage electric vehicles from entering Queensland’s vehicle fleet.

“Instead, the RACQ hopes to work with the Morrison Government to change road usage taxes.

“Unless the Federal Government improves these road-user charging systems, there will be a scrapped together bunch of different taxes in each state.

Dawson MP George Christensen has explained that the Federal Governments currently spends $3.5 billion on the Mackay region’s roads.

It’s Wiggles time!

MUCH-loved children’s entertainment combo The Wiggles put on a show at the MECC last Thursday.

The show was part of the “We’re All Fruit Salad” tour, to celebrate the group’s 30th Anniversary.

The crowd, comprised of excited kiddies and their amused parents, sang along to timeless classics such as “Welcome to the Wiggle House”,

“Fruit Salad (Yummy Yummy) and “Baby Shark (Da-dada-da-dada)” There were three shows on the day and a great time was had by all who attended.

Insurance industry questions PM’s cuts

NORTH Queensland’s insurance industry doubts Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s promises that crippling home insurance costs will be cut by large amounts.

These doubts follow Prime Minister Morrison’s announcement that home insurance costs for 500,000 homes and businesses north of Rockhampton “will become cheaper from July next year”.

Mr Morrison has announced a $10 billion government guarantee, or a reinsurance fund for companies insuring homes and businesses damaged by floods and cyclones.

“The Government expects that this will reduce premiums by more than $1.5 billion for households, for strata owners and for small businesses, north of the Tropic of Capricorn over 10 years,” Mr Morrison said.

The Mackay Local News reported in its first edition on Feb-

ruary 12 that home insurance rises of more than 300 percent flowed from the change by insurance companies to cease spreading the insurance risk across every Australian home.

This has prevented North Queenslanders from having the right to insure their homes in a developed country at an affordable price.

Instead, insurance companies use computer software to localise risks, which has created unaffordable premiums for North Queenslanders.

Mackay’s Steel Pacific Insurance Brokers General Manager Glenn Sales (pictured) however, said this welcome initiative will take more than a year and at least 18 months to be implemented.

“First, new laws will have to be passed by federal parliament and political parties will want to make endless changes,” Mr Sales explained.

“Home insurance costs should in theory eventually come down, but I can’t see them coming down by two-thirds, to previous home insurance levels.

“For example, the cost of insuring a $300,000 home for $4000 will not come down to previous levels of $1500 and may only come down by $1000.”

Mr Sales said the Australian Government does not control or regulate home insurance costs.

“As a result, there is no way for the Morrison Government to force insurance companies to cut premiums, even when huge floods and cyclone costs are underwritten by a new $10 billion government

insurance fund,” he said. “If Melbourne and Sydney’s home and business insurance costs had gone up by 300 percent, this problem would have been solved.

“But for over a decade, nothing has been done, apart from government reports, even though North Queensland’s insurance system was broken.

“In September 2011, the then-Deputy Treasurer and later Opposition Leader Bill Shorten released an insurance review which ‘accepted an affordability problem as there were some very large premium increases, sometimes by 300 percent or more are being sought by insurers, especially for home units’.”

Last week, Prime Minister Morrison agreed that our local premiums were too expensive and announced “home-owners and businesses have faced crippling insurance costs, and in some cases can’t get insurance at all.

“It’s not OK and we’re going to change that,” Mr Morrison said.

Costs under scrutiny NORTH Queensland’s skyrocketing home and business insurance costs are about to be carefully dissected.

The Federal Government’s $10 billion support for insurance companies has yet to even be negotiated with the Insurance Council of Australia who, surprisingly last week, were totally unaware of Prime Minister’s announcement or any of the details.

Clearly, the Federal Government will need to be provided with detailed explanations of North Queensland home insurance premiums before providing a $10 billion government-guaranteed fund to support large payouts for cyclone and flood damage.

The $10 billion fund to support North Queensland replaces the Competition and Consumer Commission’s Northern Australian Insurance Inquiry’s subsidy recommendation.

This fund is a major victo-

ry for two outgoing and retiring Liberal National MPs – Dawson’s George Christensen and far north Queensland Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch.

Together with their Townsville colleague Phillip Thompson, their strong action may enable Queensland’s Liberal Nationals to retain these three federal electorates and allow Mr Morrison to hold onto government.

North Queenslanders’ hip pocket voting nerves and rumours the Labor Opposition will introduce a similar measure has clearly fast-tracked this initiative.

The looming negative voting sentiment is best summed up by Steel Pacific’s Mackay-based General Manager, Glenn Sales.

He said North Queensland’s traditional voting loyalties would have been thrown out the window by voters faced with totally unaffordable insurance costs.

Dawson MP George Christensen believes the $40-billion fund should now result in insurance costs dropping by anywhere up to 50 percent.

“Well, let’s be honest,” Mr

Christensen said. “Insurance companies don’t just make a little profit; they make a lot.

“I’ve heard insurers complain that they don’t make any money out of the North Queensland market as they pay out more than they take because of the damage caused by cyclones.

“That may be the case, but what about the fistful of dollars they make in other parts of the country that don’t have recurring natural disasters?

“Details are yet to emerge as to how the reinsurance pool will work. But if I were in charge, I’d make the scheme compulsory for all Australian insurers and I’d take

the costs of running it from a levy on their profits.”

However, North Queensland’s largest insurance companies must be expected to try and prevent the Australian Government from copying the Californian State Government. This is where home insurance price rises must be explained, justified and government approval won before levied on its 40 million residents.

The Mackay Local News asked the Insurance Council Australia (ICA), if home insurance rates would come down as a result of the Morrison Government’s $10 billion fund.

Walkerston truck crash

A TRUCK rolled over near the Walkerston High School and Woolworths on Wednesday.

A Queensland Police media spokesman said the rollover happened at 10.55am on May 5, blocking both lanes. Previously, on Friday, March 12, The Mackay Local News reported on construction of the Walkerston By-pass.

Federal MPs George Christensen and Michael Landry won 80 percent of the $150M roadworks from the Commonwealth at the request of Mackay’s Road Accident Action Group (RAAG).

RAAG published fears that a truck laden with the highly explosive ammonium nitrate might roll over near the high school, causing a possible mass loss of life and catastrophic injuries.

RAAG calculated a worst-case blast zone covering the Walkerston State School, St Johns School and Church, the police station, the library, local shops, the old Kirkup Bridge and most of Walkerston’s homes.

Immediate vaccinations are already readily available from a handful of Mackay’s General Practitioners and 29 GPs are providing the COVID-19 vaccination service.

The list of 29 GPs in the Mackay, Whitsunday and Isaac Council regions who are providing COVID vaccinations has been provided by the Federal Health Minister, Mr Hunt (as listed left).

Mr Hunt said North Queensland GPs can also apply to start before May 17, if they choose to.

“Every single North Queenslander aged 50 and over can receive the COVID jab,” Mr Hunt said.

Mackay’s Sydney Street Medical Practice Manager Emma Pullen said they have enough vaccines for patients.

“If we receive the vaccinations

in a timely manner, we’ll have enough stock,” Ms Pullen said.

“We got notified that we can start vaccinating immediately.

“There have been lots of enquiries and a lot of community interest.”

Caneland Medical Centre has already started a daily 7am vaccination clinic for its patients.

Pioneer Medical Centre Practise Manager Debbie Davies said their GP clinic had signed up as

an approved vaccination centre and is awaiting confirmation of its third round of vaccines. “I’m unsure how many vaccinations we have been allocated, Mrs Davies said.

“At this point, a lot of our patients are waiting for us to start, so we may be a little bit short, but I think we’ll be fine. Patients have already started their flu vaccines.”

Mr Hunt thanked local GPs for supporting the COVID-19 vaccine rollout.”

Queensland Health Minister Y’vette Dah’s office said it was “surprising that a question about widespread COVID vaccinations dates had arisen.

“This vaccine rollout is a joint effort, but Queensland’s vaccine output will always be contingent on a steady and certain supply of

vaccine doses, which is the Commonwealth’s responsibility,” the Queensland Health Minister’s spokeswoman said.

“Queensland will continue on its vaccination rollout plan and work closely with the Commonwealth to ensure that we can continue to keep Queensland safe.”

Over 130,000 doses

FEDERAL Health Minister Greg Hunt told The Mackay Local News that 134,443 COVID-19 vaccinations are available to Queenslanders.

Mr Hunt said 146,737 doses have already been given to Queensland.

“This includes 59,257 COVID vaccinations to Queensland’s aged care facilities,” he said.

“A further 267, 528 doses have been given to Queensland health workers, to first responders and to Indigenous communities.

“Despite denials, the Palaszcuk Government is responsible for vaccinating North Queenslanders.

“It’s a collaboration between GP’s, Queensland Health and other practices.

“Vaccinating Queenslanders against the COVID-19 virus comes back to all levels in government in the COVID vaccine

program.” Mr Hunt said hospitals have responsibility for essential services and every Queenslander over 50 should contact their GP to get a jab.

“We’re up to the stage of the over-50 2A roll out,” he said.

“Next, we will vaccinate 16 to 49-year-olds in Stage 2B.” The Mackay Base Hospital declined to comment on why the Pfizer and the Astra Zeneca vaccines are only available to certain age groups.

The spokeswoman also said “there’s no starting date for wider community vaccinations.

“Since March 15, the Mackay Base Hospital has been vaccinating Priority 1A and some 1B healthcare, emergency services, border security and meat workers.

We also opportunistically vaccinate some high-risk patients. All other people need to see their GP.”

Successful ambulance birth

A YOUNG Mackay family was recently reunited with the paramedic team who delivered their baby Coby in the back of their ambulance.

In mid-March, heavily pregnant Amara Walker was at home when she felt the labour process beginning.

As the labour was progressing quickly, Amara called for an ambulance.

Luckily her partner Rob wasn’t far away.

“It was just very quick,” Amara said, “Rob just made it home from work, it was all a bit hectic but it was my second (pregnancy), so all good!”

While waiting for the ambulance to arrive Rob kept an eye on Amara.

“She went into labour fairly quickly,” Rob said.

“And we had to call the ambulance and these guys rolled in and saved the day.”

Coby was only five days early so the family was prepared and “ready to go”.

Rob remained calm as “I didn’t have to do much.

We were in good hands!”

ness at hand when critical care paramedic Hannah Jarratt arrived on the scene.

“I walked in and everything was pretty much under control,” she said. “And (fellow paramedic) Josh wasn’t far behind me.”

On the way to hospital, Coby decided it was time to become a Mackay resident and the paramedic crew had to stop on the roadside to deliver him.

“It was great,” said Hannah, “we worked as a team, Amara was fantastic and worked alongside with us and it was a nice, calm delivery and a happy little baby.”

Josh said he has experienced similar situations “plenty of times. (It’s my) thirtieth year in the job so plenty of babies!

“But what makes it even better is having paramedics like Hannah there, she’s also had experience and our job is just to assist mum to deliver and support the baby.”

The Walker family was pleased to be able to catch up with Hannah and Josh at the Mackay Ambulance Station last week to say thank you.

Unwelcome wake-up call

EXCESSIVE noise from rubbish trucks has startled some Mount Pleasant residents with an early, unwelcome wake up.

Residents have been motivated to organise a petition which was signed by householders who were concerned about the noise.

This was then sent to the Mackay Regional Council, asking for their dump trucks to not arrive until 7am.

An April 28, a council report acknowledged the petition was “tabled at the Council meeting of March 24, 2021.

“Nuisance noise, such as industrial waste collection, can disrupt sleep, which can adversely impact health and well-being,” the report said.

While the petition voiced complaints about the dump truck’s noise, Queensland industrial noise regulations make no mention about this area.

“There is no descriptive noise standard for the collection of waste,” the council report said.

“If Council was to receive a customer request regarding noise from waste collection, this matter would be investigated and assessed. “(This would be) in relation to the noise

The devil in the insurance detail

ANYONE who has dealt with insurance companies knows they have many, many pages of fine print detail that can derail your claim.

The political fix for the soaring insurance premiums in northern Australian is the opposite – not much detail.

But The Mackay Local News had the insurance issue on our first front page because we knew, as a local paper, how important this issue is to every person in our cyclone, flood and fire affected area.

ETON RANGE PRAISE CONGRATULATIONS on the recent multi-million-dollar realignment of Eton Range.

This will improve safety and productivity and will also boost haulage transport, and most importantly save lives and injury.

When you go to the newly established

“lookout”, we can reminisce of early pioneers, who came over the range when it was a dirt track.

The first historic crossing of Eton Range was by bullock wagon driver James Ready, accompanied by William (Billy) Coakley in 1862.

My sister, as author of “Shamrocks among the Gumtrees”, dedicated to the memory of our great grandparents, is a family history of James Ready and Mary Ready.

It took years of research, assisted by her late husband and my brother. It was published in 1994.

As a member of the Mackay Family History Society, it was submitted to “Early Settlers of Mackay, 1860-1885” and it entailed years of research.

Congratulations gentlemen for taking up the issue so forcefully and persistently. But, we have several buts. The detail will be critical.

But for property owners, household, commercial and farms, the issue is whether the Government can isolate their underwriting fund just for those insured against and affected by major incidents.

This is an issue raised by the Financial Services Royal Commission three years ago.

It suggested better regulation of the use of insurer-chosen ‘panel builders’ (usually blow-ins from the south who care little for their repairs or unrealistically low quotes).

The Financial Services Royal Commission also called for better regulation of loss adjusters, sometimes from overseas or interstate with little knowledge of local building codes and practices.

While the North produces most of Queensland’s wealth, through mining and agriculture and all their support industries, it is subject to severe weather events.

As we drive over the Eton Range, let us remember “The Men who Blazed the Track”.

Can Skinhead, like Nostradamus, predict the future? Time will tell

A politician by any other name?

I’m reserving my judgement as to whether the State Opposition is led by David Crisafulli or David Crisafull-of-it.

Believe it or not, I predicted Crisafulli’s rise to Opposition Leader more than two years ago but that far-from-Nostradamus-like feat was not based on an intimate knowledge of this bloke’s ability.

It was more about my conviction that the LNP did not have the leadership or firepower to beat Annastacia The Omnipotent (ATO).

While I had nothing against then leader Deb “The Freckle” Frecklington, she was not laying a glove on ATO and her party was, as far as the public was concerned, a policy-free zone.

Added to this was the fact that the LNP was floundering in a shallow talent pool with Crisafulli one of only a few who at least presented as a possible future leader.

Well, this is DC’s big chance. He started well and his ballsy speech to the party’s State Council hit the mark, but we all know political rhetoric is sometimes based on good intentions and little else.

If DC wants to avoid the Crisafull-of-it name tag he has to not only drain the swamp, he has to turn it into a pristine pond and restock it with an electable school of candidates.

The story will unfold over the next couple of years but what happens to the LNP in the next few months will probably set the scene for what will be a tough time in Queensland politics — for participants and for long-suffering voters.

Let’s face it. Right now the LNP is not a viable alternative government. “Headquarters” is so far removed from the parliamentary arm (and reality) you could be forgiven to wondering if they are two separate organisations.

If The Freckle had a hard job gaining public support because of her own performance, her job was made impossible by the outdated and vindictive management style of the party machine.

The words “you cannot be serious” sprung to mind when I watched those backroom “movers and shakers” cosying up to Clive Palmer.

It was as astonishing as it was stupid.

Can you believe, Labor has been in government for almost all of the past 30 years and yet again a new LNP leader has to start from scratch?

In October last year the electorate gave the LNP a right royal flogging. Since then the party has been (metaphorically) self-flagellating, the disciplinary and devotional practice of flogging oneself with whips or other instruments that inflict pain — not a pretty spectacle, especially if you don’t like seeing blood on the floor.

If this biblical comparison is continued, DC will have to become a JC-style miracle worker, regale us with inspiring “sermons from the mount”, and drive the villains from the “temple”(party headquarters).

Could I humbly suggest he spends more time, this year, working on miracles and clearing out headquarters and less time preaching to the converted?

If ever an electorate was crying out for progressive action and positive decisionmaking, it’s Queensland right now.

Abysmal government has been the norm here for decades but it has degenerated into COVID-driven dishonesty and deception, practiced by a woeful government and aided and abetted by a pathetic Opposition.

Late last year I wrote about two Davids (Crisafulli and his deputy dog Janetski) having a Goliath of a job ahead of them.

The extent of that enormous task has become more evident over recent weeks.

It won’t get any easier during this parliamentary term.

Push yourself to learn and grow. Listen to all the opinions and feedback. Be prepared to jump in, boots and all, and give something a go.

Some things will work. Some things won’t.

There is just as much magic – and power – knowing what’s not you, just as there is knowing what is.

You are You. So, own it. Be it. Capitalise on it.

CREATED Performing Arts run and owned by Amber Hollywood, has been a boutique hideaway for students looking for personalised singing, acting and music theatre training for a few seasons now.

Ms Amber is a graduate of the CON and has recently been on stage in Songs for a New World and It Takes Two for Red Giraffe Theatre and absolutely smashed the MECC with her stella vocals and denim vest in Rock of Ages for MMCP. A perfect role for a consummate performer that uses her skills on stage to assist her adoring students.

CPA likes to keep things simple in the concert epartment but has a penchant for being the mime champions of the eisteddfod and have had industry professionals Madeline Cain and Kurt Phelan host workshops.

I look forward to seeing Amber back on stage as soon as her important mum duties settle down a touch.

COMICAL ROMP Five Women Wearing the Same Dress is a comedy by Alan Ball that will be produced by the good crew at Kucom Theatre and directed by Luana Royle.

The comical romp is an official fringe event in the Mackay Festival of Arts and has a stella cast and a fresh new leading man on the scene.

Dennis Rozekrans answered the call for a dashing 30’s something bloke to play the featured lad role and the strapping blonde Dutch native, now Aussie bogan nailed the role. Dennis is married to one of the most talented ladies in town, CON lecturer Sarah Rozekrans so I’m sure he’ll smash his first major role.

The female driven show features the hilarious and talented Georgia Rogers in a dress, seriously, a dress, with Jane Reddrop who I adore on and off stage, Anne Jensen, Sarah Ralph and one of my favourite comic actors Kristyn Everett.

Everett is a life member of MMCP but is taking some time to get back to her roots of straight acting. With comical roles in recent times for Thespian Ink under her belt, I’m glad the over achiever and excellent producer is back on stage.

TIN WHISTLE? Kathleen Campbell (is that a tin whistle in your pocket or are you just happy to see me) is a local soprano that dangles her talented fingers in many awesome and delicious theatrical pies in town.

The siren that is known throughout the region as the harp darling, can also win bar bets by being able to play any musical instrument. One third of Folks Like Us, who I don’t shut up about - and who recently recorded their debut album with thanks to some awesome RADF $ - is also seen around town as musical director for some of the most ground-breaking musicals the town has experienced.

For Red Giraffe Theatre, Kat led the band on 13 The Musical and Songs for a New World. Kat will take care of the vocals on Heading North I’m producing.

Enjoying a family moment at Moranbah

Celebration for Moranbah’s 50

LOCALS and visitors celebrated Moranbah’s 50th birthday from April 30 to May 2.

Tales of the good old days of Moranbah echoed across the coalfields during Moranbah’s 50th birthday celebrations.

Thousands rolled up to over 12 planned events at the weekend to pay tribute to the history and people that built the town.

Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said Moranbah became ground zero for past and current residents and workers to gather and share their stories of the last five decades of Moranbah.

“I cannot express how proud I was to see people who have helped build Moranbah to the powerhouse community it is now come back to town and share their stories of the past 50 years,” Mayor Baker said.

“It has truly shown me that this small town situated remotely in central Queensland had a lasting impact on so many lives from all over Australia and beyond.”

Deputy Mayor Kelly Vea Vea said the celebrations were a fitting tribute to the town.

“For everyone who has at one time called Moranbah home, there could hardly be a louder thank you

than the last four days of celebrations,” Cr Vea Vea said. Moranbah Motorcycle Riders’ Club and Moranbah Girl Guides kicked off the four-day-long celebrations on Friday night.

This led AFL and golfing events during Saturday, with the memorabilia display and reunion event organised by Moranbah The Good Old Days that same night.

A soccer carnival, car show, live entertainment at the Miners Leagues Club and a Murder Mystery production entertained many throughout Sunday, culminating in the Labour Day march on Monday morning.

Cr Simon West said events like these were possible thanks to passionate community members and organisations.

“I would like to thank Mark and Toni Holland for their community passion and love for our great town that has helped them organise this weekend, not once but, thanks to COVID-19, twice,” Cr West said.

“Council was proud to partner with Moranbah the Good Old Days and local community groups to present the long weekend celebration.”

Cr Gina Lacey said she was grateful to everyone who helped support and organise activities over the weekend.

Beautiful area for boating, fishing THEskipper on a boat or watercraft has a very important role, whether its towing a couple of wetsuit warriors on Theresa Creek dam out at Clermont or heading out to the reef.

We have been lucky enough to participate in the great people of our beautiful area discovering boating since 2017 and fondly remember Ricky Greenwood the first person to start there boating journey with us.

The Mackay Marina is the starting point of many great adventures & we praise our local Volunteer Marine rescue group who keep a look out for us salty seafarers and remember it’s only $85 to become a member.

ON THE weather front: It’s time for the hum of lawn mowers over the weekend. A very low chance of showers all the way through until late Sunday afternoon.

New initiative targets road safety A MAJOR retailer with local outlets are helping drivers to remain safe.

Coles and its supply chain partners have joined forces with the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) to help make Australia’s roads safer for all users.

The We Need Space campaign is aimed at educating road users about how to share the road safely with heavy vehicles.

Coles trailers carried by Linfox and Toll will become giant, travelling billboards in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, urging road users to stay out of

truck blind spots, learn how to overtake trucks safely, and avoid overtaking turning trucks.

The NHVR has produced a series of Community Service Announcements fronted by Supercars Champion Garth Tander and will be rolling out educational resources through driver education programs and its state and territory transport authority partners.

Assistant Minister for Road Safety and Freight Transport Scott Buchholz said that in many instances of multi-vehicle crashes, it was not the heavy vehicle driver at fault.

“Heavy vehicle drivers are proud of their safe driving, it is what they do each and every day – a proud profession – but we know some motorists might feel a little intimidated by sharing the road with them,” he said.

“It is important all road users recognise that trucks can be difficult to manoeuvre, have large blind spots and regularly have to navigate unpredictable traffic.”

NHVR CEO Sal Petroccitto said the We Need Space was a great example of the regulator, business and government working together in the interest of road safety.

Finding correct suspension for your vehicle

TEAL KEOGH from A/TWO provides some essential tips for your 4x4 IN MY last article we spoke about the popularity of lift kits and how a minority of drivers think that big lift kits are the way to go.

However if a simple consideration of the onroad and offroad usage was taken into account, they would soon find that they have 1. Been deemed illegal; 2. Spent money where it wasn’t necessary; and 3. Now have bugger all onroad ability.

Anyone with a bunch of onroad and offroad traveling experience will have a similar suspension configuration based on their usage.

This brings us to a couple of examples that will help you decide what is best for you.

This is based on our own experience, professionals’ advice and our customers requirements.

Consider your extras/ what accessories will you be adding, such as: n Bullbar, Know it’s weight; n Winch option, now or future; n What weights will you be adding and carrying on vehicle? n Will you be towing, how often and what weights over tow mount? n How many passengers will you be carrying? (It matters, ask your professionals why); and

n Where are you planning to go with this set up?

One common suspension setup solution we have encountered and resolved for our customers is the rear of the vehicle sagging too much after someone sold them a suspension upgrade.

In most cases the constant load was not sufficient to their carrying requirements.

Depending on ride and handling quality, some installations will require some sort of perseverance. For example Farmer Brown carries a one-tonne liquid-filled pod around his farm daily and sometimes travels 25kms on a highway and dirt road. But the car sags, sways and front end skips when turning.

My solution for the rear of this vehicle is to upgrade his spring rate in order to be able to carry such a load.

But now I need to be able to control the spring. This is now done with a shock. But it is best done with an adjustable valvetype shock.

An adjustable valve-type shock will assist with the compression and rebound. The spring you choose will have an option for height/ lift to assist with the sag as well. This is to not only assist with a level ride and keep it stable but also controls where your lights are pointing. Some cars don’t have light height adjusters.

But not all is done. We still need to stay legal and to do that we need a GVM upgrade compliance inspection and plate.

(Keep in mind that your GVM

is only compliant in your particular state) The next most popular type of suspension requirement we get asked for is an offroad lift kit.

We find a happy medium for offroading - and I mean just wheeling through tough tracks with bugger all extra loads other than bullbars, winches, spares and recovery gear.

I recommend a 2” lift kit to stay compliant with road laws. is absolutely enough.

The setup that suits me is fully adjustable Dobinsons spring and shocks.But instead of using the 2” shock I opt for the 3” which doesn’t lift the car more but allows for more stroke. This is so I can still touch the ground when one wheel drops into deeper rutts, Yes your clearance is limited but you can utilise the skid plates and rocksliders to protect everything that is important underneath, if you get hung, I have my handy dandy Winch, or a mate is helpful if you can find one.

That being said, these are my preferences and you will have different abilities or disabilities to fwork with. My biggest Tip is to talk to your LOCAL professional if you are thinking about a suspension upgrade.

Netball back in full swing with energy

Netball is in full swing locally

Pearls take on Moranbah Sharks OFF the back of their first win, Under 12’s Pearls took on Moranbah Sharks.

The Pearls have been working hard on defence at training, focusing on hands over every pass.

All players put practice into play with Sophia Haines and Brina Kelly pulling plenty of tips and intercepts for the game.

Their hard work saw the Pearls come up with a draw, six all. MVP was awarded to Peppa Geisel and Tyla Sexton. Star player from

round one was awarded to Peppa Geisel, as voted by the team.

Under-14 Tsunamis came up against Storm Hurricanes last week with two game focuses, plenty of talk on the court and staying on their toes.

Although they only had seven players for the game, the Tsunamis came out firing with some excellent movement down the court,.

Unfortunately two injuries saw the girls playing with just five in

Juniors storm on in comp WEEK two of the Mackay Netball Associate Junior Competition saw two of the three Storm Netball Club’s moddies teams take the court against each other.

Determined to try out the skills they learned at training, the players defended and passed the ball with enthusiasm.

The goal shooters were equally keen to hone their skills. Each team was striving to be their very best but the smiles on the players’ faces and the good sportsmanship proved that winning was not the most important element of this game.

Storm Pockets and Storm Ripples proved themselves to be great ambassadors for netball and are looking forward to having fun while continuing to develop their skills over the season.

A huge thank you went to both girls for stepping up. Unfortunately the girls went down 40-8 at full time. Despite the unfortunate scoreline the Tsunamis played a strong game of netball, nailing their game focus and overcoming each hurdle as best they could.

Whitsunday games were cancelled due to rain.

SATURDAY was round one of the Mackay Netball Competition and Moranbah was in full force with eight teams attending.

These were U10s Gems, U10s Pearls, U12s Sharks, U12s Red Rockets, U14s Opals, U14s Sapphires, U16s Rubys and U16s Diamonds.

All teams were excited to hit the court that no matter win or lose, they came away smiling.

With not a lot of competition in Moranbah for the juniors, the teams make the trek into Mack-

ay every Saturday to build skills, learn resilience, respect, friendship and most of all, to have fun.

Moranbah has a tight-knit netball family and although it can be tiresome for the parents driving in and out, they love watching these kids grow stronger each week and wouldn’t have it any other way.

This week’s player of the match goes to Naiya Luzcynski from our U14s Opals team.

The effort and determination she puts into every single training and game is unbelievable and it definitely paid off.

Under-14 Tsunamis with U-12 players

THE men and women from the Mackay bowls district acquitted themselves very well at the recent State District Sides Championships in Brisbane.

Playing twelve games over four days is a tough assignment but the men’s side - with four teams skipped by Peter Balderson, Peter Blackburn, Chris Gee and Manny Isgro - achieved their best result for many years in coming fourth of twenty districts in the State. Their previous best results were fifth in 2016 and 6th in 2017. The ladies also did very well, coming back from three losses in their first three games to then win seven of the next nine to finish in ninth place overall. The ladies’ skips were Nug Pratt, Carol Crosbie and Betty Nicolle. The annual Mackay Club Prestige Fours attracted a full green of 16 teams at the weekend and some great bowls were played.

MAY’S monthly medals were run and won on Saturday. The men’s overall, and B-grade winner was Jim Cochrane with 68 nett. The A-grade winner was Levi Holmes with 71 nett, from Adam Stroud on 72. C-grade winner was Adam’s son Corey with 69 nett from David Moran 76 on a count back. The B-grade runner up was Peter Faust with 72. The placegetters were Jason Bourke, 73, Tony Sellwood, Barry Mortimer, Jim Grace, Nathan Holmes and Warren Deighton all on 76 and Kelvin Stephens and Chris Brett 77 on a count back. The pin shots went to Phil Batty on two, Andrew Mau, nine and Rob Stanley on 16. Clay Coles and Jason Bourke shared the two-shot pot.

The ladies’ winner was Jill Farinelli on 78, from Penny Wardroper on 79 nett. In the place getters were Lyn Muller, Pauline Redpath and Heather Luvis. The pins shots were won

by Lyn Muller on nine and Pauline Redpath on 13.

Round Eight Results Joe Wilson jumps back into the top four this week with a nice victory over Nathan O’Hara.

That win was at the expense of Jamie Maher who suffered a defeat at the hands of Andy Peel. Andy as a result of that win jumps a place into seventh.

Jamie Woods extends his lead at the top of the table to three points over Rooster Coutts who consolidated second place with a fine win over Seumas Rose.

Ross Gallichan makes the top eight for the first time this season with a solid win over Garry Robbie.

Chloe’s thrills and spills Chloe Lebeter has been carving it up behind the wheel since she was about 10 years old.

She is now 13 and already she has a reputation as a formidable opponent on a dirt speed track.

She has big dreams for the future and has a grasp on driving that puts many adults to shame.

She has been racing for about three and half years.

“I started racing when i turned 10,” she said.

With the encouragement of her parents, Chloe took up the sport following in her father’s footsteps who had been racing wingless sprintcars until 2019.

“They drive me to and from racing, the average trip is about eight hours each way to a speedway meeting and we do a lot of racing down south in Maryborough, Kingaroy, Gympie and Roma,” she said.

“Mum and Dad also support my racing financially and put a lot of time in making sure the car is ready to go for each race,”she added.

Her first car to drive different cars was a 1990 Daihatsu three-cylinder G100 Charade before moving on last year she upgraded to a 1.5L 1998 fuel inject-

ed Daihatsu Charade. Inspiration has really come from her father, who is her hero, as well as her racing mentor Dakota Laverty who has been a great friend during the past few years.

So, do her parents worry?

“Mum freaks out when I crash, but I am safer in my race car then in our road car because of all the safety features,” she said.

Chloe admits though she does get scared after rolling her car in Rockhampton last October after hitting the wall however she no longer fears racing.

The up-and-coming speedway champion has enjoyed many great moments so far in her short career.

“I think the highlight for me would be Collinsville on April 17 this year Prior to that was at Maryborough speedway in October last year, when I got my first heat win,” she said.

In 2019/2020 Chloe was named the Junior Club Champion for the Sunshine Coast Speedway Club.

“I have received 18 other awards which include heat wins, feature podiums, encouragement awards and participation awards,” she said.

BARCALDINE hosted their annual TAB meeting on Saturday, May 1, which saw six races run and won.

The final event of the afternoon saw the locally trained Sizzalating make it seven straight wins in the Outback Racing Showcase Heat. Sizzalating, a four-year-old gelding has had just seven runs for Barcaldine trainer Todd Austin, and has saluted in all seven, including the Country Cup Final at Rockhampton on April and Saturday’s feature.

Austin’s gelding has put up some massive margins in his seven-race win streak, with the margins cumulatively reaching 35 lengths in a streak that only started on November 14, 2020. He will be a force to be reckoned with over the coming months, with all roads leading to Brisbane for the Battle of the Bush.

Chloe loves meeting new people and she loves the feeling of winning.

“I love that when I’ m racing, nothing else matters and all I need to worry about is the next eight laps,” Chloe said.

“We have made so many more friends through speedway that we call family,” she added.

Powerlifters at Townsville Open

THREE powerlifters attended the Townsville Open competition on April 10.

There were over 40 competitors from North Queensland in attendance.

Rodney Wecker competed in his new weight class of 69kg and lifted an unofficial national record of 160kg in the deadlift.

Leanne Knox broke the national records in both the deadlift and the total in the 72kg division, lifting 176 kg and totalling 401kg for the three lifts of squat, benchpress and deadlift.

Leanne also won female overall best lifter. Rikki-Lee Marrett performed extremely well and finished second overall.

Club head coach Leanne Knox said she was very pleased with

the results and looks forward to the next competition to be held at Whitsunday Weightlifting on July 24.

Both Rod and Leanne will be attending Powerlifting Australia’s Senior National Championships in Melbourne in August this year.

Whitsunday Weightlifting hosted an Olympic Weightlifting club competition on April 24 at Airlie Beach Crossfit.

Thirty three competitors ftom the Whitsundays and Townsville took part in the competition.

Many of the local Whitsunday lifters competed for the first time.

Head coach Leanne Knox was really excited to see so many people enter the competition.

She said she was very im-

pressed with her junior lifters who competed for the first time.

Competitions allow lifters to showcase their hard work on the platform and provide great motivation for lifters to set goals for the future competition.

Many of the juniors are now ranked in the top three in Queensland and Australia.

Alex Falkenmire also competed in her third competition as she prepares for Queensland State titles in July in Brisbane.

The juniors are training hard preparing for Youth State titles to be held in Brisbane on June 9, 10 and 11.

There were some fantastic performances with a heap of personal bests being achieved.

Mackay darts travelling A TEAM of six ladies and sixmen players travelled down to Maryborough last weekend to compete in the Queensland senior trials darts tournament.

The winners/best results of this tournament get to move onto the next level which is representing Queensland at the state championships later in the year.

If successful, they will progress to representing Australia in darts. However making it onto the Queensland squad is such a great achievement as the players were up against some really great opponents, some who have mostly played at state level.

Mackay Darts Association had one man make it to the Queensland squad coming in fourth position and one lady make it to the top 12.

She placed fourth overall in the competition but unfortunately was defeated by her competitors and didn’t quite make it to the squad .

Another one of the Mackay ladies placed as a familist (2nd) in the restricted singles.

She also placed 13th overall which again is a huge achievement. There was plenty of 180s thrown and some very high and impressive finishes.

DOMINANCE Earlier in the day, Moranbah trainer Bevan ‘Billy’ Johnson continued to show his dominance in the Queensland Country Racing circuit, with his three runners walking away with a win and two thirdplacings.

American Genius won the first race of the day, a Class Six Handicap over 1000m in his fourth start for the champion trainer. Owned by some of country racing’s finest, a young up and comer also has his name in the race book in this six-year-old gelding.

After owning some country battlers with Johnson in the past, Kobie O’Brien began his own racehorse ownership syndicate, ‘KO Racing’, which has continued to reap benefits all across Queensland. While he owns just a small part of American Genius, he hopes that it can bring him similar success to his recent purchase Vinasta and Silent Weekend.

GENIUS “He (American Genius) just has the look of a superstar about him,” O’Brien said.

“He’s flashy and just glides around the track. His trackwork is amazing.”

After settling in the first pair, American Genius pulled away over the concluding stages to win by threequarters of a length under Dakota Graham.

“He was ridden upside down at Barcaldine but he was still far too strong for them at the business end,” he said.

“He’ll now be pushed to qualify for the Battle of the Bush.”

O’Brien is also one of three owners in Sidetrip who ran third in the third race of the day.

Softball pulls out all stops FROM BACK PAGE Keenan Smith pulled out all stops to field a hot ground ball heading for the outfield.

Silverbacks Lincoln Walk and Shannon Goffer pitched well and Jessie Barnes batted well with a home run over the fence, scoring two runs. Riley James scored a two bagger.

Both teams have Queensland and Australian players, so some top-quality softball was on show.

Gladstone Rhino’s team are just behind the top two teams.

Ladies A-grade leading team Janita’s Girls entered day two followed closely by Outlaws.

It was all action in softball over the long weekend

Jessica Rohde, Tyleisha Dunn and Ashleigh Polzin shone for Janitta’s Girls. Rheanon Preston and Karen Edgreton led the way for Outlaws.

Ladies B Grade leaders were Townsville and Babes with Balls.

For Townsville, Amber Miller and Jamie Woodland led the way.

The Babeswith Balls players who stood out were Ruby Bourke and Sharyn Cunningham.

The A grade men’s Grand Final was between CNW Dragons and Silverbacks, Silverbacks batted in six runners in their first innings and then shut out the Dragons with some very tight fielding,

Lincoln Walk pitched the game for Silverbacks and kept the Dragons to scoring only four runs.

With time running out the Dragons were batting with the score of 6-4 to the Silverbacks. It looked like the game was going to the Silverbacks but Bill Baxter stepped into the batter box and put the first pitch over the fence.

Regan O’Neill was next up and smacked it over the fence, making it a six-all ball game which looked like it would have to go to a tie breaker rule. Andrew Baxter was next into bat and also put it over the fence, which gave the Dragons the win.

The A-grade Ladies game was a real cliff hanger and went for seven innings. Janitta’s Girls were undefeated through the rounds and were closely followed

by Panthers. Both teams had good pitcher and catcher combinations and kept a very tight field.

After seven innings Janitta’s Girls were the winner at 5-3.

The B-grade final was between Townsville and Babes with Balls, and Townsville were the runaway winner 14-2. Townsville looked as though they were under graded and went through the rounds defeating all teams by large margins.

Exciting T-20 draws teams from around Qld FAST-MOVING T-20 Cricket arrived in Mackay with an impressive $50,000 in prize money.

The Harrup Park Country Club organized Mackay’s first T-20 MI Scaffold Bash-for-Cash.

The Country Club arranged 19, T-20 cricket teams from across Queensland and this exciting new competition was held over the May Day long weekend.

Harrup Park General Manager Adrian Young believes that T-20’s lucrative $50,000 prize money will turn Mackay into a top cricket destination.

“Our idea has put Mackay’s sugar city on the map,” Mr Young beamed. “One of our Aspirations

for 2022 is for our Bash-for-Cash to become an interstate competition.

“This is just the beginning and next year we hope to have 20-teams, as we’ve created this open registration competition.

“Hopefully, we will get more get more Queensland and Australian games played in Mackay in the future.”

Mackay had some “extremely high class” players in this new competition, as we hosted 19 teams from across Queensland.”

Mr Young said this new T-20 competition created teams with a mix of local and ex-Queensland Bulls players.

“We’ve got first-grade players from Brisbane who have come to play in our Mackay local teams,” he said.

“As a result, the standard of cricket is was exceptional.”

The first match between Norths and Townsville team Shaheed Bhagat Singh started at 9:00am on Saturday.

Pioneer Valley took home a cheque in the sum of $40,000 when they defeated Souths in the final.

Pioneer Valley had finished their regular round fixtures in third spot after defeating Bundaberg-based Across the Waves, Cairns based Flint Tropics and

fellow local team Norths to qualify for the semi-finals.

They then defeated the highly fancied Toowoomba based South Western Indigenous Network (“SWIN”) by seven wickets.

SWIN’s Glen Batticciotto was announced the player of the tournament after scoring 252 runs at an average of 84.

Batticciotto was also recognised for taking a hat-trick during the tournament.

Other notable performances during the tournament included Nikhil Chaudhary scoring 114 runs at an average of 57 and Jakob Frerichs scoring 11 runs at an average of 55.50.

Fever-pitch carnival

THE Mayday Softball Carnival was held over the long weekend from Saturday to Monday.

Clubs came from as far from Townsville and Brisbane to compete at the Mackay softball fields

in Beaconsfield Road. Mackay softball teams Dragons, Angels and Hawks were in attendance, however before all that could take place the fields had to be drained due to the heavy rain.

Players and their children helped drain the field with pumps and buckets to prepare for game day. Their efforts took some time but eventually the fields were game ready.

This pushed game times back to 9.30am on Saturday.

There was catering available and a cafeteria. Pop-up shops also sold softball gear. The two top teams in the A-Grade men’s

competition were CNW Dragons (Mackay) and Silverbacks (Brisbane). Players to find the bat for CNW Dragons were Bill Bailey with a grand-slam home run, bringing in four runners and An-

drew Baxter hit a home run over the fence which scored three runs.

Then Baxter performed a beautiful, screaming diving stop at first base.
