Tourism to reap $445M MACKAY tourism is expected to grow to 1.05 million overnight visitors a year, with $445 million to be spent at local hotels, restaurants and at tourism destinations. Peak tourism body Mackay Tourism said that Post-COVID, the growth in tourism numbers to Mackay will boost job growth and an extra $86 million a year will be spent in Mackay Mackay’s tourist growth postCOVID will return to about four percent per annum, which will also create an extra 200,000 overnight visitors and 820 extra overnight stays. This will be a bonus for Mack-
ay’s business community as Mackay Regional Council’s Mayor Greg Williamson and Mackay Tourism CEO Tas Webber help to broaden business activity beyond the mining sector. Mr Webber leads this positive change from a low base and he explained that half of the onemillion visitors to Mackay each year work for the mining industry. Meanwhile 250,000 people a year come to visit friends and relatives. “Mackay Tourism has a threetiered approach to rebuilding tourism,” Mr Webber said. CONTINUED ON PAGE TWO
