Tourism to reap $445M MACKAY tourism is expected to grow to 1.05 million overnight visitors a year, with $445 million to be spent at local hotels, restaurants and at tourism destinations.

Peak tourism body Mackay Tourism said that Post-COVID, the growth in tourism numbers to Mackay will boost job growth and an extra $86 million a year will be spent in Mackay Mackay’s tourist growth postCOVID will return to about four percent per annum, which will also create an extra 200,000 overnight visitors and 820 extra overnight stays.

ay’s business community as Mackay Regional Council’s Mayor Greg Williamson and Mackay Tourism CEO Tas Webber help to broaden business activity beyond the mining sector.

Mr Webber leads this positive change from a low base and he explained that half of the onemillion visitors to Mackay each year work for the mining industry.

Meanwhile 250,000 people a year come to visit friends and relatives.

“Mackay Tourism has a threetiered approach to rebuilding tourism,” Mr Webber said.

Police Briefs Alleged theft A 33-YEAR-old West Mackay man has been charged with multiple offences following an alleged break in and car theft at Te Kowai between 12:00 pm on April 24 and 1:30 pm, April 26.

Police were contacted to attend a single vehicle traffic crash around 9:40 pm on April 27 along the Bruce Highway in Sarina. Upon arrival, it will be alleged officers located the 33-year-old man from West Mackay in the driver’s seat of the Mazda BT 50 utility. It’s further alleged officers found clip sealed bags containing cannabis and methylamphetamine in the vehicle.

Six charged

DETECTIVES have charged six people following the search of a West Mackay address on Saturday, April 24. It was alleged 24 grams of methylamphetamine, six grams of cannabis, a quantity of prescription medication, drug utensils and $186, 000 worth of cash was located during the execution of a search warrant on a Landsdowne Road residence. A white 2003 Subaru Liberty reported stolen from the Cairns region earlier this month was also located along with multiple mobile phones. A 38-year-old West Mackay man has been charged with one count each of drug trafficking, possession of tainted property, possession of anything used in the commission of a crime and contravention of a domestic violence order

Stolen cars

IIN RECENT weeks, Mackay Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) and Property Crime Team have investigated a number of stolen cars and burglaries between Mackay and Airlie Beach. Police arrested two 18-year-old men and a 16-year-old boy relating to a separate series of offences. They were charged with a total of 23 offences between them. Two men were denied police bail to appear in court later this week.

The other 18-year-old man is due to appear in Mackay Magistrates Court on May 10. Investigations continue to determine whether this group of offenders are linked to other crimes.

Airline arrivals are driven by tourism or mining

80 percent drive to Mackay for leisure MACKAY Tourism CEO Tas Webber has explained that about 20 percent of those flying to Mackay, fly in for leisure on Qantas, QantasLink, Virgin Australia, Jetstar and Alliance Airlines.

However, most tourists to Mackay and to the Isaac Shire arrive by car.

In comparison, tourism dominates – and has once again kickstarted – passenger traffic at the Whitsunday Coast and Hamilton Island airports, which each have about nine flights a week from Melbourne and Sydney.

Mackay airport has 164 flights a week, but only from Brisbane.

Currently, the Mackay and Isaac regions lack profitable tourist flights from Australia’s largest southern state cities. However the good news is that aircraft arrivals are now only marginally down

from pre-COVID levels in the same period in 2019 of 197 flights a week.

This is because Mackay and Isaac Regional Council towns like Moranbah are mining service towns and so job growth and business activity was significantly less affected by COVID-19.

In contrast, Whitsunday’s Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island’s tourist businesses were put on ice and jobs collapsed when there were no flights at all for months and months on end.

The Whitsunday Coast, Hamilton Island and Mackay airport passenger numbers have recovered from the pandemic.

For example, this year there will be about 24,000 airline seats into Mackay, up from 21,000 airline seats into Mackay during the pandemic in 2020.

Further, Mackay’s pre-COVID

airline passenger numbers in the second week in April in 2019 were 16,000.

After COVID, ust a few weeks ago, weekly airline passenger numbers were 13,000.

After a 20-year tourism industry decline, the Isaac and Mackay regions are now benefitting from Tas Webber and his team who are rebuilding this industry.

This follows historical setbacks from when Mackay was once a tourism hub.

Daily boat trips to Brampton Island were then cancelled and the Hamilton Island airport was opened in 1995.

Unusually, North Queensland has three jet airports within a 100-kilometres radius and a fourth jet airport is just 200 km away to serve the Isaac and Moranbah regions’ mining industry.

AFTER months of no flights for months during COVID last year, Whitsunday Council’s Chief Operating Officer of Aviation and Tourism Craig Turner has announced strong forward airline ticket sales for airlines for the next three months.

“We are back to Pre-COVID tourism arrivals,” Mr Turner said.

“For example, in March 2019, our Whitsunday tourism numbers were 32,000 and now we are already back to 28,000 in 2021.

“Then for the month of March 2021, we had just shy of 30,000

passengers through our airport.

The good news is that 90 percent of the airline seats have already been booked or purchased and bookings for April, May and June are already at 60 percent.

“As a result, we are currently working with airlines to increase the number of flights to Whitsunday Coast Airport from Melbourne and Sydney.

“We are currently negotiating with Jetstar and Virgin Airlines whose senior executives are doing the analysis, as we have asked for daily flights.

“This will allow even more visitors from interstate to visit the Whitsundays.”

Mr Turner explained that due to Australian international border restrictions there have been no international tourists.

“If there was international trade, then we would be even busier. But instead, we are getting more tourists from all Australian states,” he said.

Further north, lack of interstate flights devasted Cairns in April last year with only eight people arriving on one particular day.

Sarina RSL club forced to close

Ron Gurnett on ANZAC Day A MASSIVE $390,000 tax bill and falling trade has forced Sarina’s RSL club to close.

Sarina Branch President Ron Gurnett explained that “we owed the tax office too much and the state branch has run up a $390,000 tax bill”.

“I guess it probably started some 10 to 12 years ago, when the state branch actually ran our (Sarina) Club for four years, Mr Gurnett said. “They appointed a manager and they actually ran seven other clubs. Most of them closed within a couple of years.

“We’re the last one (club) standing and we’ve sort of been struggling for a couple of years.

“We first unofficially shut our doors in 2020, when COVID struck.”

Mr Gurnett was holding back

tears, saying he “believes he’s done his best” to keep the club running for the last three years.

“But COVID was the final nail in the coffin and without income coming in, we couldn’t pay the bills,” he said.

“Currently, our 100-year-old Sarina RSL is waiting to hear back from a judge to declare our club insolvent.

“A few of us and other members have planned to start a new sub-branch with a different name after the Sarina RSL closes.

“This potentially gives us a new sub-branch and we will meet together one day in the future.”

Mr Gurbett said a vote was held during the 2020 Annual General Meeting last November to determine the fate of Sarina’s RSL. “The members had to decide what to do as we are a club,” he said. “We decided then as we knew we weren’t going to survive.

“I don’t feel good about it as we have let previous ANZACs down.

“But we had to make the decision as insurance was $850 a week and with no money, what do you do? Had it been a week or two, we probably would have tried to stay.”

RSL Queensland declined to comment on the debt.

“We broadcast something for everyone,” Dr Boyd said. “Easy listening during the day, specialty programs after hours.

We havea long-running French program, Italian program, Fiji, rock’n’roll, heavy metal, a Scottish program on a Thursday night – a wide variety of programs. We believe we’ve got a substantial listenership.”

COMMUNITY Radio Mackay (CRM) is a local station which provides an alternative to commercial radio.

CRM is run by a dedicated band of volunteers, including its president Dr Bill Boyd.

“We’ve been in this building 171 Victoria Street since 1993,” he said “We largely broadcast 24/7. We’ve got a manager, everyone is a volunteer and we run on a shoestring. It costs around $50,000 a year to run CRM. We get that from sponsors,

They “came along to help ten years ago” and still turn up there every Friday morning.

“We’re the phone chicks!” Desley laughs.

Desley says she enjoys the time spent weekly at the station, especially the “friendship, talking to the listeners, meeting new people, enjoying the music”.

Helping others fulfills local’s passion

LONG-time Sarina resident Dellrayne Andersen believes in the power of giving.

Dellrayne recently saw the need for face masks after the State Government ordered the wearing of the marks in public.

So she started making masks for the local community, which she gave away – asking only a donation for the charity BlazeAid, an organisation which rebuilds fences for farmers who were victims of natural disasters such as bushfires.

“With the masks, because the Queensland Government didn’t

give much notice, I thought ‘I’ve got fabric and I’ve got the sewing machine’ and I could raise a bit of money for Blaze Aid.” She said the demand for the masks was so high she had to enlist eight local (and willing!) volunteers to help her.

“I was so overwhelmed with this mask-making so I had to call for help,” she said.

“I didn’t keep count of how many were made but it would have to be 300 or more.

“People on Facebook would tell me how many masks they wanted and they came round. And they were just lovely.”

Dellrayne is no stranger to

charity – good deeds, as they used to be known.

“Whenever I do something, it’s just given away,” she says.

“Over the years I’ve been knitting beanies and handing them out as I go, doing a bit of road tripping here and there. I hand them out along the road.”

She has also organised for eight cartons of menstrual pads and clothing to be sent to Papua New Guinea through UNICEF. Dellrayne recently made around 1000 reusable cloth menstrual pads which she sent to Vanuatu, “along with new panties, kids’ shorts, plus other bits and pieces.

THE Farmers Market at Mackay expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Greater Whitsundays Farmers Market sells fresh produce every Wednesday at the Bluewater Quay – even if it is raining.

Marketing and Events Manager Kirra Tully proudly said last year was great for Mackay’s Farmers Market, as the number of shoppers increased from 250 to 1500 in weeks because of COVID-19.

“We were struggling in early 2020, but when COVID happened, it helped the Farmers Markets and farmers sold out,” Ms Tully said.

“In fact, the number of shoppers increased from 250 to 1,500

in a matter of weeks.

“This was because shoppers couldn’t buy items from Supermarkets and they discovered us !

“Due to demand, we even had to hold an extra market last year, as the Farmers Market is always available.

“We’re still seeing over double the number of consumers and connecting people to food is what we do, one bit at a time.”

Ms Tully said Mackay’s Farmers Markets now attracts 500 people each week.

“I’ve noticed some people have now become regular customers and we have gained a new producer last week” Ms Tully said the Farmers Mar-

kets began in 2016. “There was a clear need to promote the region’s farmers and their produce and we noticed that shoppers enjoyed connecting with the farmers.

“The feedback has been great, as people enjoy knowing where their food comes from.

“Having a Wednesday Farmers’ Market adds value to Mackay residents weekly food shop while supporting local growers.”

Ms Tully added that long-term plans include holding mini-markets, starting a co-op store and continue promoting the region’s farmers and produce.

MACKAY MP Julieanne Gilbert has unveiled a fourth round of Made in Queensland grants to help the city’s economic recovery.

Round Four of the Program is delivering $15.5 million to Queensland manufacturers to supercharge their businesses.

“Manufacturers in the Mackay region are already producing cutting edge products,” Mrs Gilbert said.

“The Made in Queensland Program can assist businesses to export their locally manufactured products around the world, creating jobs and growing our local economy.

“The Program provides businesses with exciting new opportunities and the potential to bring new manufacturing activity right here in Mackay.”

Mrs Gilbert recently visited JET Group, whose innovative

tyre handling products are being exported to mine sites all over the world.

“Companies like JET Group are an excellent example of Mackay’s manufacturing capabilities,” she said. “I am looking forward to seeing the new and exciting opportunities our regions manufacturers can create through the Made in Queensland Program.”

Small and medium sized manufacturers are transforming their businesses and creating jobs through the program, which now totals to $61.5 million.

Mackay Manufacturers can apply for grants between $50,000 and $2.5 million, allowing them to become internationally competitive and adopt innovative processes and technologies.

“Over three rounds (of) $46 million has been directly invested into our manufacturing sector,” she said.

Mackay Men’s Shed Coordinator Allen Grant

WEST Mackay Mens’ Shed is a gold mine of talent, warmth and comradeship for retirees.

Men’s shed members provide wonderful support to each other while learning basic and advanced carpentry skills.

Coordinator Allen Grant said their men’s shed also provides new members with a whole new circle of friends and acquaintances after retirement.

“Our Friday lunches provide wonderful companionship and men without any carpentry skills at all enjoy being taught by new friends,” Mr Grant said.

“Many people are not aware that Australia has more mens’ sheds that MacDonalds fast food outlets. “(These) share the concern and support for mens’ physical, emotion-

al, social and spiritual wellbeing.

“Mackay’s Men’s Shed provides carpentry quotes on all sorts of big and small jobs, as we are constantly repairing and making furniture,” Mr Grant said.

“For example, we have just made volumes of newspaper stands and boxes for The Mackay Local News.”

Mr Grant said Mackay’s Men’s Shed provides non-judgemental support for men going through transitional periods in their life – from redundancy, bereavement, retirement, ill health, relocation and divorce.

“Our companionship and practical work while making anything you need from wood, also helps men suffering from isolation, loneliness and depression,” he said.

Renovations for Netball Association hall

THE Mackay Netball Association is amazed and impressed with its improvements and renovations to their netball hall.

Association Secretary Jenny Moohin said it took seven years to upgrade their run-down hall to commercial standards, so it is now ready to be leased out to create a new income stream.

“Paint was peeling and all the grey ceiling bats were all ripped and falling from the ceiling, plus some were missing,” she said.

“The lights were hanging from

the ceiling and the wiring for the lights was exposed.”

Association Chair Allison Bugeja said there was also a family of possums that used to come into the hall.

“We got them all out and locked them out,” Mrs Bugeja said.

“But the possums still managed to find a way back in through cracks.”

Mrs Bugeja said Mackay’s Netball Association is thankful to the Mackay Regional Coun-

cil’s support and sponsorship grants and also for help from the Queensland Country Bank.

“Their support helped with hall renovations, which included a fresh coat of paint, a new carpet and restoring the ceiling.

“The Netball Association got the $30,000 from the Mackay Regional Council to do the carpets and for new windows.

“The shutters didn’t close properly and our hall wasn’t secure.

“Mackay’s Netball Association

also got a Queensland Government grant for $7890 to paint the wall. But we’re paying for blinds from our own funds.”

Jenny Moohin and Mrs Bugeja said their long-term plans are for Mackay Netball Association was to hire the hall out for various community events.

“The hall’s is now at a state where we can hire it out.

“Everyone says ‘you’re not going to get grants forever’, so we have got to get other ways to make money to cover costs.”

Digger, 104, recounts WWII experiences was the bombardment of the Japanese at Rabaul across Jackino Bay. “There were eight heavy guns in our battery and we could see the shells going through the sky, we watched them and saw them exploding.

“It was very strange and very exciting thing for me.

“The Japanese had dug little caves in the wall where they ran in their mini submarines so they couldn’t be seen in the daytime.

“Then when the tide came in, they would take them out again and do whatever they were supposed to do. That was their task I suppose.

By JOHN BELL THE most senior man at Mackay’s Anzac Day March was 104-year-old Bill Bruce.

Despite his advanced years, Bill has a wonderful smile and his mind is still as sharp as a tack.

Bill is still such a clear thinker and was very articulate as he described his role protecting North Queensland and Australia from an advancing Japanese invasion of Australia.

Nebo’s oldest resident and renown bush poet signed up for the Army Reserves in 1942 and, in 1943, Bill was transferred to an engineering support unit in Papua New Guinea.

This was commanded by Major Ding Bell for a while and then

by Major Brown.

There Bill learned how to be an electrician.

Thompson guns “So if a soldier dropped a Thompson gun in the mud and it jammed, then we fixed it. Or if you broke the woolly pup end-off an anti-aircraft gun we got it out,” he said.

“A lot of soldiers used sail boats which could be detected by Japanese submarines and we had sailmakers who fixed their torn sails.

“No matter what went wrong, we fixed it. When we couldn’t order parts we had to make parts

“There were 800 in the Battalion that we were connected with and at one stage I was the only electrician there.

“If Major Bell wanted another light in his tent, then then I fixed it. If things wouldn’t work and someone wanted to use a grinder, then I fixed it.

“We had a lot of mates together and we didn’t know what was going to happen really from day to day.

“We shifted from one place to another. We had several camps in Buna and Gona and places like that before we went over to New Britain. At Jackino and Waterfall Bays in camps there for a while, working from there “Of course, when the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima that put an end to everything, And at Nagasaki.

“The Japanese (locally) didn’t surrender after the atomic bombs.

At Hiroshima the bomb did a terrible lot of damage and I think 80,000 people were killed in nine minutes. One was dropped on Nagasaki a fortnight later in a hilly place and the blast from the bomb wasn’t as devastating as at Hiroshima on flat ground.

“In New Guinea, they wanted to make out that they didn’t surrender. But they were beaten. I don’t know how they were going to do that.

“I tried to go to the Occupation Force in Japan with Colonel Ding Dong Bell.

“But they said that people who had volunteered to be in the army for a few years, they said that we had better go home.

Outnumbered “In some things we were outnumbered by the Japanese.

“Their Zero planes were better than the Wirraways I think.

“The war was just a thing that had to be done and we were hoping that it would finish as quickly as possible.

“I think I had two Christmases in New Guinea, between a few leaves back home.

“It was a hard place and I remember we had army beans on toast for breakfast for six months.

“Fresh food was a thing we didn’t get very often. It was tough sort of living.

“We lived mostly in tents and in New Britain, it was nearly all in tents. I belong to the Nebo branch which a small country branch of mostly country people from stations and station hands. But natural attrition means they just died out and I was left the only one, or there was one other member and the sub branch had to close its books.

Nebo sub branch “I always did something for the Nebo sub branch for the Dawn Service and at the Main Parade.

The Main Parade was at ten o’clock and the Dawn service, of course, was very early morning.

“There was a lot of discussion in some of the last paperwork I had from the department. They didn’t seem to know how the Dawn Service came about.

“It was the Reverend White, a lot of people think he was the father of the Dawn Service.

“He made a speech when the first soldiers left on ships at King George Sound at Albany in Western Australia.

“I think there was hope that things would turn our all right for them. In 1923, Reverend White came back and collected 20 returned men at Mount Clarence and they threw a reef into the water and watched it float away.

“And after it disappeared, he said in a very firm tone, ‘As the sun rises and goeth down, we will remember them’.”

FOLLOWING the success of a self-guided heritage tour of Mackay’s City Centre and Waterfront, a similar driving one has been developed for the Pioneer Valley.

The Pioneer Valley Heritage Driving Trail had a soft launch on council’s website recently, but has been officially launched today, as part of the 2021 National Trust Heritage Festival.

Mackay Regional Council Character and Heritage Advisory Committee chair, Cr Fran Mann, spoke about the trail during late business at the recent meeting.

She said the self-guided driving trail operated the same way as the other two Heritage Discovery Trails.

WINTERMOON Festival is set in the foothills of the northeast boundary of Eungella National Park.

This quiet rural setting beside the beautiful St Helens Creek comes alive with festival-goers seeking wonderful world music from magic and talented people. The darling of the festival circuit in QLD, it’s kinda that awesome secret that only the cool cats know about. Some staples of the four-day event will be back like morning yoga from Christopher David and of course the divine Embellish Bellydance inspired by folkloric dances of the Middle East and India.

Local crew Folks Like Us and The Base Coats join the stella Round Mountain Girls, Karl S Williams, David Flower, Fat Cigars Fiesta Band and new kid on the block doing spectacular things, Jonte.

Peter McKenzie is a more than just a local lad who can catch a fish and play the sax like crazy. The CON lecturer is easy on the eye, but his humble disposition keeps him on the footy field and in charge of all things brass in the region. I booked Pete on a bunch of gigs in the jazz outfit Playful Secrets at Dirty Martinis and although he was first to hook into the booze, the goods were provided to the adoring crowd. And the ladies loved him. Some blokes also.

Looks like the Palace is back! The pub, not the queens airbnb. And with a slick coat of paint and some bling seems the former pub darling will have punters knocking back beers like the old days. It’s next door to Haunt – Mackay’s home of saucy dinner theatre also run and owned by Deb and Stu. I hope the rumours are true that there will be vampy tunes from the bar, monkeys in tuxedos and a trapeze installed in the main bar.

David Brannan is that local DJ and tradie with muscles, tatts and a rig for days. His mates are the

darlings of the cocktail crowd and the utmost fabulous. He gigs at private parties on Hamo fresh from night shift and can tune up any drag hungry crowd.

You might say this local gem is bound for the big time down south but thank goodness Brannan is content to eat Byrnes pies on a Friday and spin tracks on a Saturday. The tunes are tight, and the floor is ever pumping when DB is smashing the tracks. In Macktown, we do stuff right.

Local showgirl with legs to die for Delton Clark is rumoured to be making a comeback on the performing arts calendar. Last seen on stage bringing down the house at Dirty Martinis’ New Years Eve celebration when I was running the show, the Black Pearl was draped over a Grande piano in Victoria’s Secret lingerie singing the sultriest song from the musical Nine. The press was going crazy and the punters were losing their mind. Methinks it’s high time the mistress of mayhem returns to where she belongs. Front and centre with a glass of champagne.

The adult cast is mostly locked in for Heading North, a new musical I am creating with music and lyrics by Graeme Connors and original script by S.K. Munt. The principal roles will see blonde bombshell Tania Attard who’s currently rehearsing Mama Mia for MMCP take the lead. A huge year for Tania as the red lady giraffe will also direct Fame the musical.

The two other leading roles will see half of The Base Coats - Angie Smith and Andrew Obst who always command your love when they’re on stage. Obsty doesn’t learn his lines until the last minute but lucky for the silver fox, Angie and Tan are the consummate professionals and will jag him into line. Or I will.

The featured role of Nancy will be played by Bronwyn Grannall whose voice is transcendent and her energy in a rehearsal room is unparalleled to none.

Clearly, I don’t have any ugly or untalented friends.

Tickets are selling crazy for Big Bad Mouse and Mama Mia so don’t be that *insert title here* who misses out on enjoying excellent local theatre. And did you grab a t-shirt from Crossroad Arts HQ in Wood Street yet?

Bye George, those high paying eco jobs WITH George Christensen taking early retirement, the next Dawson MP needs to chase those high paying eco jobs.

Regardless of what those southern commentators say, George was obviously on the pulse of this region, given his very big swing in the last election.

RECOGNISING SUGAR HOW refreshing to find that southern politicians and trade groups are finally recognising the economic value of the Australian sugar industry.

This industry has consistently added to the nation’s coffers without the regard that it deserves.

barley, beans, pulses but sugar has been overlooked by our power brokers to allow poorer countries to increase their industry at the expense of our own.

Australian sugar growers do gain some rebates, not subsidies, unlike heavily subsidised farmers in other sugar-growing countries.

These nations create excess produce with cheap labour and which they dump on the world open market at cheap prices, degrading our prices and returns.

Is this the level playing field that was promised to all?

Now it has been noted that we have the second-greatest raw sugar market and suddenly sugar is remarkable.

Sugar has many uses other than that as a

sweetener and that should be recalled to those food buffs, who would demolish the industry.

Despite being a money earner, both state and federal governments seem fit to impress tax-collecting items on cane growers plus fuel and energy bills that never decrease.

Give the growers a chance to further the industry by dropping those unnecessary regulations, thus creating more employment.

As Bill Shorten found at the last election, the good citizens and voters of Dawson do not want to be clones of the organic latte café society of the chattering classes in Canberra and Melbourne.

I like and got it because it’s a bit of a gypsy.

Electors in Dawson forgave George’s philosophical crusades (free speech for Julian Assange etc), as they understood that he understood far better than southern politicians and bureaucrats what good and high-paying jobs are in the tropical north.

It’s also fun and I like going sleeveless, because everyone thinks that it’s a portrait of me, which is pretty cool.

Good jobs pay for higher living costs, especially for medical care and many everyday goods in the North, which is the key issue. At the last election Bill Shorten was asked exactly what eco job he was offering that paid the wage of a coal-fired power-station worker.

A colleague who works a full-time maintenance shift at one of the Bowen Basin coal mines recently saw a very similar job at a solar farm.

Thinking he could save the family the increasingly common sledging about working in the ‘killing the planet’ coal industry, he decided to inquire about the eco job.

Well actually, is was the same job banging metal and injecting grease but at a different location. He was genuinely shocked, as the eco job offered less than half the pay, casual zero hours contracts, and few living-away from home benefits.

Naturally for the sake of his family, he is sticking to his coalrelated job.

So the next MP for Dawson just has to keep asking, “Where are the high paying eco jobs?”

Dawson needs at least 10,000 of them, as promised by the ‘wine-bar greens’, described by Prime Minister Morrison last week.

However solar panels are made in China, wind turbines are made in Germany and their blades come from China, the batteries come from Vietnam, with components from Taiwan.

The federal and state government throws $3 billion into various low carbon projects with these largely imported components.

But the Queensland and federal governments haven’t thrown a decent amount of money into carbon neutral, value added projects in our established sugar cane industry using local manufacturing skills.

Inquisition into the inquisitor

IS THE Crime and Corruption Commission turning Queensland into Comedy Capers Central without the belly laughs ?

The CCC has been exercising its extremely wide powers for years and has, naturally, upset a lot of people.

But upsetting people is one thing. Destroying them, or at least their reputations, is something else altogether, especially when nothing positive appears to have been achieved.

This is not a subject to be trivialised but consider the irony of the situation. In making political comment, I note that we have an all-powerful crime and corruption fighting machine, led by the fearless Wee Jock (Alan) MacSporran QC and a state government that backs it all the way.

The Premier’s glowing endorsements of the CCC and Wee Jock are meant to be reassuring, but their transparency is adding legitimacy to calls for an inquisition into the inquisitor.

The Palaszczuk Government has, in the eyes of many onlookers, gotten off lightly after numerous inquiries into the performance of members of the Government, including the Premier and her then-Deputy.

The CCC has found very serious breaches, but has hardly laid a glove on anyone.

The result has been a lot of tut-tutting, naughty-naughties, and “you’d be prosecuted if you did that now”, but face slapping with a wet lettuce leaf has been punishment enough.

I can almost hear Annastia The Great invoking Monty Python: “Mark Bailey is not the Messiah, he’s a very naughty boy with more private email accounts than Google.”

But he’s not guilty of any crime. He’s just naïve and inexperienced

so we forgive him, along with all the other cabinet ministers who have done similar things. “Now move along. Nothing to see here folks.”

The whiff of corruption in the Palaszczuk Government is fast becoming a stench and unless the Premier decides to act quickly and prove her total commitment to open and accountable government, that stench may become overpowering.

Political room-deodorising platitudes won’t have any effect.

Sweet-smelling air freshening rhetoric will be about as useful as an inflatable dart board. And the spiritual burning of unethical incense will end in tears, not an odour-free political environment.

But all that aside, are our politicians so inept, so morally bankrupt, and so lacking in integrity, that they needed the following reminder from Wee Jock?

To mark International Anti-Corruption Day 2020, MacSporran wrote to all newly-appointed ministers.

He urged assistant ministers and directors-general to be advocates for integrity and anti-corruption.

Wee Jock invited these political and bureaucratic elites “to make Queensland resistant to corruption and corrupt attempts to influence decision-makers”.

I might be a bit naïve. But is it really necessary for the CCC Chairperson to have to warn politicians of “the temptations that can confront senior decision-makers when being courted by lobbyists, political donors and consultants” ?

Or is Wee Jock not living on the same planet as the rest of us?

“There may be an expectation among some individuals or private sector corporations that they are entitled to special treatment,” Mr MacSporran said.

Really? Well I’ll be buggered.

According to Wee Jock, “The CCC is an independent agency combating major crime and reducing corruption for the benefit of the Queensland community.”

According to the community, “Bring on the inquisition.”

There is much can be said for new beginnings.

It’s a fact to which those of us who have had a few of them can attest.

Picking up and starting over is daunting. But certainly not more daunting (to this scribbler, anyhow) than staying stuck in a place you don’t feel is right.

I have a dear friend and colleague who once imparted upon me some incredibly sage advice:

That is where the magic happens. That is where you grow and learn and see life’s greatness.

It is also a place where I tend to feel my most comfortable.

We make our merry (and sometimes, not so merry) way through life swerving the curveballs, juggling the many balls, and oftentimes dropping the odd ball and all the while we are offering up justifications, caveats, what-ifs, how-comes and if-onlys.

Indeed, there are those things which we cannot see coming but it is with each of these comes the gift of potential, new direction, and something often completely new and different.

It’s right there, perched on the precipice of potential and uncertainty that we breath in the

utter fabulousness of he life we lead. And that, reader, is what this wee rambling bit of prose will (hopefully!) ponder and pontificate as the weeks flit by.

This here is a new beginning of my (our!) very own. So, let’s relish the change and messiness of what comes next - together. Let’s meander our way through the ickiness, awesomeness and awkwardness that is life!

Life can be a bit tricky at times; and don’t we know it. But by golly it is wonderful, and only we can choose how we play our hand.

It’s messy. It comes without instruction. It’s a journey.

But, oh! It’s Fabulous!

North Jacklin legacy lasts test of time

IT IS a legacy that has lasted the test of time, a business that has changed hands over the years but never changed in its ability to serve you best. This is the North Jacklin Motor Group.

Celebrating a milestone most businesses can only dream of, this year the trusted Motor Group with premises on Gordon and Gregory Streets has reached 60 years of trade.

It doesn’t take long to work out how such an achievement could be reached when looking at the approach to customer service John North Jacklin took all those years ago.

Always known by his middle name, North Jacklin started the iconic Mackay business in April 1961 after a decade working as a car salesman for Fields Motors Mackay.

After acquiring the B.M.C franchise, the business opened in a rented premises at 148 Wood Street with just two staff – a humble beginning to what is now a business with more than 120 staff.

In 1963 – after relinquishing the B.M.C franchise – North

acquired the respected Datsun franchise and cemented the future of the company.

Datsun, a brand of parent company Nissan, was popular among locals with the Bluebird model a sellout at just 899 pounds (about $1600).

“It was considered good value for money, that’s why so many people wanted it,” Mr Jacklin said.

“We also had a service ute that was number one on the floor and a heavy-duty station wagon. The Bluebird range was followed by several good ranges until finally the Datsun 1600 was brought out, and in my opinion that was the greatest car.”

Flash forward to the late 1970s and with mining booming in the region, the hardtop Datsun MQ Patrol was the prize choice of coal miners who were “coming into town in droves” at the time.

But as it turned out, returning home to their wives and explaining why they had purchased a two-door car ended up being the most expensive part of the outing…

Mr Jacklin said it took about six years for the dealership to really flourish with the right staff and business model. The unique “ABC” staff approach was something he took pride in, but there was another unusual routine that really set the business apart.

“We would begin work punctual at 8am every day and would always start the morning with the song What a Wonderful World by Satchmo (Louis Armstrong).

“The major thing that established us was our approach to staff and customer service. We would have a ‘check up from the neck up’ every morning and staff would think about their ABCs…A for attitude, B for belief in themselves, C for courage, D for determination, E for effort and most importantly F for fun.”

NQ builders happy with extension

NORTH Queensland builders have welcomed the Morrison Government’s decision to extend its HomeBuilder construction commencement timeframe.

However, home builders continue to fight for solutions to trade and materials shortages and soaring prices.

After months of Master Builders’ lobbying, the Federal Housing Minister Michael Sukkar has rubber-stamped the extension for the timeframe for home builders.

This will give builders 18-months to start work on signed contracts, so new home can benefit from the HomeBuilder grant.

Queensland had the second highest number of applications across the nation, with 26,293 new home buyers and renovators applying out of the total 121,363 national applications over the lifetime of the grant.

The Home-owners grant closed on March 31.

Master Builders Deputy CEO Paul Bidwell, said the time extension, which was only for six months, will now give home builders further breathing space in what has been a pressure-cooker environment.

“The Federal Government’s HomeBuilder scheme did the job it was created to do,” Mr Bid-

well said. “It stopped our industry plunging off the cliff that we were heading towards, even prior to the pandemic, which threw a sucker-punch at our economy.

“The demand on our home building industry has been huge, which has created first-class problems of trades, materials shortages and rising prices.

“This extra time will take some of the pressure off builders, helping them fulfil their promise to start work for their customers so they are still eligible for the $25,000 or $15,000 grant, depending on when the contract was signed.”

North Queensland’s home builders are facing a perfect and growing storm of supply and tradesmen shortage problems.

Master Builders Deputy CEO Paul Bidwell (pictured) said these problems are growing in ferocity.

“The HomeBuilders extension doesn’t come close to solving our woes,” he said.

“We already know delivery times on timber and steel supplies are stretched, with prices going up by more than 15 percent.

“Roofers are especially hard to find because they’re busy with both insurance work, new builds and renovations.

“Now, we’re hearing there’s a shortage of concrete pipes which is impacting on land developments.

“There is a minimum 14 -weeks wait and anywhere upwards of 18 to 20 weeks, depending on the product.”

Mr Bidwell said there are currently only two concrete pipe producers in the market, after one closed down last year and two pipe producer can’t keep up with demand.

“In fact, some engineering contractors are pre-ordering, even before they’ve even won a job to try and beat the clock.

“It’s great builders have more time to turn the first sod, but those

pipe shortages mean that land can’t be developed.

“A house can’t be commenced until the land has been developed and the title issued.”

Master Builders Deputy CEO Paul Bidwell said that he will meet with state government officials later this week to further discuss possible solutions.

“These include providing more flexibility for builders to use extension of time provisions in existing contracts.

“Master Builders will also seek access to mediation if things go wrong, to ensure fairness for industry and consumers.

“But currently, this situation is shaping up to be a profitless bubble and there are no winners here.

“We don’t want our builders going bust, and at the same time, home buyers can’t afford to pay the price.”

Mackay reefs are teeming with fish

LOCATED alongside a relatively unexplored, yet spectacular part of the Great Barrier Reef, the waters off the Mackay region are teaming with colourful reef species and heart pumping pelagic and sports fish.

Whether you are a stone’s throw from the mainland, or hours offshore, the variety of fish species will have you coming back for more.

Launching from Seaforth, Mackay or Hay Point provides easy access to the reefs, islands and other structures that fish love to congregate around.

Seasoned anglers use the traditional squid or cut flesh baits, while younger generations are having great success on plastics, vibes and metal jigs. Hordes of pelagic speedsters turn up on mass from November to February, providing real heart racing action.

Spot profile: Hibiscus Coast Incorporating the net free zone, the islands and reefs scattered off the coast of Seaforth provide spectacular fishing within sight of the mainland. Normally offshore species such as coral trout, cobia and red emperor can all be caught here. Just be sure to check the Great Barrier Reef marine zones before you head out.

Target species: Spanish Mackerel The famous Spaniards are as hard fighting as they are delicious. Fast trolling lures or scented baits will often entice a bite. From that point on, it is a case of hang on and enjoy the ride as these speedsters take off. To stand a chance against the famous spanish mackerel you will need heavy duty gear, wire trace is also recommended.

The Pony Club Camp attracted over 60 young riders and their families

Fun at Pony Camp OVER 60 young riders and their families had an exciting time at the annual Mackay Zone 10 Pony Club Camp at Nebo last week.

The camp provides an opportunity for young people to learn new skills and experience different equine disciplines while hav-

ing lots of fun and making new friends.

Horseback Archery, Horse Ball and riding like a jockey were new activities, along with the regular Showjumping, Dressage, Campdrafting and Horsemanship.

Families travelled from as far as Townsville and Clermont.

MACKAY Road Runners started ANZAC Day with the stirring sounds of the Last Post.

They then tackled the 5km and 17km annual Farmers Gallop. Hostess and life member of the Mackay Road Runners Club Agnes Farmer has been hosting the Farmers Gallop from the very early days of the Club’s 45 years.

Mackay Road Runners Club President Tim Magoffin acknowledged the ANZAC Day tradition as runners bowed their heads in deep respect and thought for the servicemen, servicewomen, their families and friends for their enormous contribution to their Country - Lest We Forget!

Approximately fifty runners found the wet, cooler conditions a great alternative to the recent humidity and appalling heat as they ran their respective courses from Evans Avenue, North Mack-

ay. Five kilometre junior runners, Oliver Rule, Luke Leven and Lily Leven were in spectacular form as they sizzled over the deceptively tough course onto Harbour Road towards the Indoor Sporting Centre turnaround marker.

Jan Smith, Andrew Short, Leanne Connor, Ross Connor, Jo Hughes, Bernadette McKinnon and Werner Van Der Linde also put in solid performances as they tackled the very wet track.

Both events had runners start off on their club handicap time, which gave less speedy runners a chance to see the front for a change.

The faster runners had to chase them down from their higher ranked handicap start.

It was a fantastic outing by Rodney Elworthy who continues to dominate the local running scene, whether in the short or long

However in his usual style and scintilating pace, he still crossed the finish line in an amazing time, catching and passing most of the earlier starters.

Crispy Smith also had an outstanding performance and was just beaten by first female Demi Caldwell on handicap. Mick Scholer’s start line goal was not to be on this day as Joe Grech managed to hold onto the lead until the finish line.

Many runners backed up well after the previous weekend’s Eungella Trail Running event.

This Sunday’s 5km/10km will be of a social affair as one of the highlights on the Mackay Road Runners’ calendar will be the Hamilton Island Hilly Half Marathon.

Motorcross defies rain

RAIN may have affected many sports at the weekend, but it didn’t deter North Queensland’s Motocross riders.

Weather conditions cleared up for Whitsunday Dirt Riders to hold a major practice event on Monday.

With more than 50 riders in attendance at Drays Park Motocross Track, they had the chance to tune up their skills on jumps around the course.

Many of the riders travelled from as far north as Townsville, with other competitors from Ayr and Mackay.

The meet was a good chance to get some ride time in, ahead of the upcoming Queensland Dirt Track Titles to be held in Brisbane at the Mayday long weekend, coinciding with the third round of the Central Queensland motocross series will be held in Biloela.

The Track will next open on Monday, May 3.

Handiskins at Proserpine golf SATURDAY’S Master Butchers Whitsunday stableford was also the first day of the Handiskins, at the Proserpine Golf Club.

The winner on the day was Peter Faust with 38 points. He was also the daily winner of the Handiskins. Runner up was Rod Wecker on 37 points, while the ladies’ winner was Pauline Redpath.

In the run down were Troy Smith, John Bissell, Mat Bower, Mark Rasmussen, Scott Lee and Larry Muller.

Only 13 contested Sunday’s comp. The winner was George Meharry on 41 points and runner-up was Jason Bourke on 38 points.

Last Thursday’s division-one winner was Michael Ward with 68 nett from Simon Della Santa on 69, on a count back from Adam Maggs and Peter Krause.

The division-two winners were Steve Mitchell, 72 and Terry Handford on 73.

Other place getters were Greg Walker and Allen Roberts on 70 nett. Rain washed out the tail end of the field.

The pin shots went to Aaron Watts on two, Adam Stroud on nine, Peter Kruse, 13, and Simon Della Santa on 16. Peter Krause was the only two-shot winner.

The Wednesday ladies stableford was won by Pauline Redpath with 37 points, from Lyn Muller on 35.

In the run down were Tiina Randmae and Heather Luvis.

THE 2021 Mackay netball competition kicked off on Saturday.

Although the lead up to Saturday was a wet one conditions were almost perfect come game time.

The day was overcast and cool and the only factor that caused havoc was the wind.

Under-12 Pearls took on Brothers Cherubs, with excellent passing in the windy conditions and amazing teamwork seeing the Pearls come away with a win, 11-4.

The Pearls showed great support for themselves and the opposition, cheering for every goal. Most Valuable Player was awarded to Nara Suckling.

Under-14 Tsunamis had a successful grading run and landed themselves in 14A, taking on Magpies Claws in round one.

A close game with excellent defence saw the Tsunamis go down by just two goals, leaving the final score at 17-19.

The new shooting combination of Kendra Shields and Lily Sainsbury worked well in the circle. Maeve Hornstra and Rhylee Hiscox read the play well, pulling off plenty of tips and intercepts. MVPs were awarded to Kendra Shields and Maeve Hornstra.

Sport Briefs Qld titles IN PROSERPINE bowls, Wayne Handley, Michael Kinnear and Heather Brown will travel to Brisbane as part of the Mackay District side to play in the Queensland District titles.

The men will be playing at Logan and Cleveland Bowls clubs and the ladies at Manly, Wynnum and Belmont bowls clubs from Wednesday to Saturday.

Rain put a dampener on any local competitions bowls last weekend. A wishlist for upcoming games includes: Championship Singles: Jonathan Bye vs Shane Kinnear; “B” Grade Singles: Gavin Noonan vs Dale Haack and Brett Saroglia vs Arthur Griffith; “B” Grade Pairs: Duwaine Hiscox and Toby Craig vs Gavin Noonan and Brett Saroglia. Cutters go down to swooping Magpies

By JACOB CUMNER ROUND Five of the INTRUST Cup saw the Mackay Cutters go toe to toe with the South Logan Magpies.

Poor weather conditions set the Cutters up for a loss as the Magpies swooped in for the win early on.

Before that, both teams stood shoulder to shoulder to remember those who have fallen for this great country, our ANZACs. The Ode of Remembrance was performed, followed by the traditional bugle call, as well as one

minute of silence. With that, the game began as the players took to the field in what promised to be a fantastic game in poor weather conditions.

Much like with the earlier Hastings Deering Colts game, the Magpies were first to draw blood with a touchdown by John Asiata in the first minute of the game.

Another six minutes later Anthony Milford was in for the Magpies. However, the punishment didn’t stop there with Albert Kelly grabbing another four pointer.

The Cutters were struggling but a ray of light appeared with Matiu Stone-Dunn slipping

through and crossing in the twenty-second minute.

With 14 minutes left in the first-half, Christian Hazard dove on a kick from his teammate, slipping over the line in the wet conditions.

Another six minutes later the Magpies were in again with Isaiah Tass crossing the line. The Magpies were on fire and not even the rain could stop them.

The Magpies were playing an almost perfect first-half, plowing through the Cutters’ defenses with Creedence Toia crossing for a try in the 35th minute.

To the horror of the Cutters fans, the Magpies were far from done in the first half. Isaiah Tass scored another touchdown with two minutes to go before halftime.

The half-time score stood at 42 points to the South Logan Magpies, six to the Mackay Cutters.

Things were bleak and getting bleaker as they moved in to the second half of the game.

The Cutters proved they were still there with a touchdown from Blake Paskins in the 43rd minute of the game. However, it was too little too late.

Whether or not the weather was on the Magpies side it’s hard to say, but from the start of the game the Cutters gave everything they had.

Sadly it was not enough. The Magpies opened the game with a try by Ezra Teuila, with a successful conversion bringing the score to 6-0 as the rain started to fall.

The Cutters responded in kind in the 16th minute, with a try from captain Dan Kelly.

The conversion was taken by Henry Stocks and the score was tied at seven apiece.

Not long after that, another try

came for the Cutters, with Flynn Camelleri across the line, taking the Cutters to a 10-6 lead.

Then the weather changed and, as it poured the Magpies brought the thunder.

Number five Prince Jackson went sliding over the line to even the score for the Magpies.

However, the conversion was unsuccessful. With less than two minutes to half-time, the Magpies were over again with Cruise Ten scoring another try.

The conversion was taken by Byron Johnson, taking the score to 10-16.

The second half started with a stroke of brilliance from the Cutters making a spectacular interception.

However, the next few minutes

would prove an increasingly difficult power struggle between the two teams.

With eight minutes left on the clock, Magpies claimed another.

This time from Konrad Tu’ua, bringing the score to 10-22 Victory for the Cutters seemed to be washing away with the heavy downpour of rain.

Soon, Cruise Ten was over with another try for the Magpies, his second for the night The conversion was good and the scoreboard read 10-28.

When the final siren sounded, the score was 10-28 in South Logan Magpies’ favour. The Cutters were soundly defeated.

Both teams played exceptionally well in the rough weather.

The pain only kept coming with Jack Goodsell grabbing a try for the Magpies as well.

Jack Goodsell was in again for his second try of the night in the 68 minute as time started to count down it was all over for the Cutters.

The last nail in the coffin came from Karmichael Hunt going over for a four pointer with four minutes in the game.

A huge victory for the South Logan Magpies 60 to 10 and a sad night for the Mackay Cutters.

It was all action last Friday with the Under-14 girls going head to head in the rain

Exciting game in junior girls’ rugby A MISERABLE Friday saw Wests Tigers take on the Souths Sharks in the U-14s junior rugby league clash at the Junior league grounds, under lights.

Rain blanketed the field, making the conditions difficult to navigate.

Wests drew first blood in the match, with a try from Ameer Zarb, but they were unable to make the conversion.

It was a similar story when Souths answered shortly after with a try from Taya Ashby.

In the 15th minute of the game, with the scores locked at four apiece, the heavens opened and the rain tumbled down harder.

Souths lived up to their namesake The Sharks, taking the opportunity to strike with Number 13 Jaccoa Keyssecker scoring a try.

The conversion was successful, taking the score to 8-4 in Souths’ favour. Jaccoa wasn’t done and was quick off the mark, heading over the line for her second try of the evening.

ter a lengthy battle on the field, it seemed it was all over for Wests.

However they weren’t going out without a fight. Tigers’ Ameer Zarb finally broke through Souths’ defensive line and took one last try, bringing the final score 12-8.

It was a spirited match but a sad defeat for West Tigers. Souths Sharks celebrated a strong win in spite of the heavy ball and rain.

Both teams displayed great sportsmanship in tough conditions, with a fantastic display from future up-and-coming stars.

FROM BACK PAGE As the day progressed so did the rain. Those on the grass did it tough with a slower than usual rain affected pitch.

There were a few new divots in the grass at the end of play and the poor light saw an early mark to the clubhouse for the grass games.

But the new turf and lights shone through with all games completed. Special recognition goes to all the officals who braved the weather. They ensured that the games went ahead, especially the umpires who continued to officiate the games without the benefit of umbrellas.

The A-Grade ladies competition is heating up with close results from all games over the weekend. Arsenals and Norths had an even game with the result a 1-1 draw with the girls enjoying

some of the better weather of the day. The Brothers and Souths ladies battled in the rain with Brothers winning 3-2 in an end-to-end display of skill in poor weather.

Norths top the table with four wins over the five weeks so far.

The AGrade men’s competition is tight, with Brothers leading the competition by one point.

Norths are knocking at the door and seeking to replace Brothers at the top of the table. Norths had a convincing win against Arsenals 4-0. The men used the wet conditions to their advantage with some spectacular slides featuring throughout the game. Brothers and Souths battled in rain and cold and came away with a 1-1 draw.

Hockey is having a hiatus this long weekend with the men travelling to Toowoomba to compete in the State Champtionships.

MACKAY trainer Trinity Bannon was thanking her lucky stars on Tuesday when I Did It Again was able to do exactly that, and make it six straight wins.

The Nicconi gelding drew the inside barrier in his racetrack return over 1050m at Mackay on April 20 which came in handy given he was tardy to get away.

“I think if I had have drawn any other barrier, it definitely would have cost me,” said Bannon. “He is normally pretty handy on the speed, but I had the tongue tie on him for the first time, and whilst he has worked in it plenty of times, he obviously has never jumped out of the barriers in it. It put him off a little bit.”

The classy six-year-old was previously trained in Victoria by Greg Eurell where he won his debut at Caulfield as a two-year-old and placed on four other occasions before being relocated to Bannon’s stable June last year.

Having now won six straight, all eyes are set on some rich feature races over the upcoming North Queensland Winter Carnival.

“The only suitable race coming up for him is a 1000m race at Townsville, but ideally I would like to get him up over a little bit more, maybe even 1300m,” she said.

“He felt the pinch at the end there on Tuesday, but he is just a tough horse and he kept fighting.

“I don’t think he knows how to get beaten.”

The Mackay Newmarket looks the logical target race for I Did It Again and Bannon is certainly the woman for the job.

“That’s probably what I’m aiming for,” Bannon said.

“I’ve seen to have had a bit of luck in Newmarkets.

“I’ve won a couple of them since I started training and if I can stretch him (I Did It Again) out to 1300m I’d like to try and do that.”

Trinity Bannon also rode and trained the talented three-year-old Gamboa to victory in the last race.

Tennis swings back

TENNIS in Mackay is back in full swing after the school holiday break.

Results from last week saw Top Spins defeating Smashes in a hard-fought morning of tennis 45 to 40.

Many sets were going to six to five.

In the other match, Volleys defeated Lobs 55 to 37, still some very good tennis in these matches also.

Local hockey gains popularity in region MACKAY NETBALL COMPETITION KICKS OFF - P29 HOCKEY is fast gaining popularity in Mackay and the standard of local players is very impressive.

Last weekend, despite steady

drizzly rain throughout the day, Mackay Hockey players had another great weekend at the Harney Street Hockey Fields.

The juniors started the

weekend playing in the rain on Friday afternoon, with the under-sevens and under-nines having a great time on the wet turf. They had a good morn-

ing with only a slight drizzle, and used their skills to the best advantage on the wet surfaces.
