THOUSANDS of new jobs will be created with the proposed Urannah Dam,

60km east of Collinsville, in the Eungella hinterland, which is half-way between Bowen and Mackay.

This North Queensland’s federally

funded $1.4 billion dam project, which is twice the size of Sydney Harbour, is on hold until the Palaszczuk grants environmental approval.

Urannah Dam’s proponent and Managing Director of Bowen River Utilities John Cotter said his company had already spent $22 million and five-years prepar-

ing an environment impact statement for tabling in June this year.

Call for Govt to equip police to fight drugs MDMA (ECSTASY)

By JOHN BELL STATE Opposition Police spokesman Dale Last has called on the Palaszczuk Government to ensure that our police have the resources they need to get illegal drugs off of our streets.

The former police officer’s comments follow the release of sewerage water testing which has found high levels and widespread illegal drug consumption.

Weekly sewerage water testing now provides a reliable measure of the success of Mackay’s and North Queensland’s drug squad.

It heralds a new benchmarking reality for policing the spread of illegal drugs, as drug arrests are not a true indication of success.

Weekly tests of Mackay, Townsville and Cairns sewerage water has revealed Australia’s highest consumption of illegal drugs which are averaged across major cities in Northern Queensland. Weekly illegal drug consumption test results are available to Mackay’s police.

Mr Last said, “CSIRO and Queensland University analysis of sewerage water in Mackay, Townsville and Cairns is extremely concerning.

“It goes to show that drug abuse is not just an issue in our capital cities.

“Any use of illegal drugs is

simply not tolerable, but to see huge increases in drug use means that there is much more work to do. There is a constant increase in cocaine and synthetic drugs that should be ringing alarm bells for police and for Queensland’s Health Department.

“What we need to remember is that the people who peddle these drugs have no hesitation in selling them to anyone who will buy them.

“North Queensland’s community needs to ensure that we report drug traffickers and drug dealers to Police to protect our children.”

However Mackay MP Julieanne Gilbert has defended the Palaszczuk Government’s drug policy, which based on sewerage water testing, has not halted the widespread spread of illegal drugs throughout the community.

“The Government is delivering an additional 150 police to the Central Police Region, which includes Mackay, plus 2025 police personnel across Queensland over five years,” she told this newspaper. “And we back police 100 percent in what they do best – and that’s to keep communities safe.

Ms Gilbert said positive Mackay drug policing in Between July 1 2020 and December 31 2020 intercepted 264 ice or methylamphetamine incidents and the seizure of approximately

2,929 grams of the drug.

“Operation Sierra Minate focussed on the trafficking of methylamphetamine in the Whitsunday and Proserpine regions by officers from Whitsunday CIB, with assistance from Townsville Major Organised Crime, Mackay District Tactical Crime Squad and Special Emergency Response Team,” she said.

“As a result, between June and October 2020, Operation Sierra police officers charged 12 individuals with 170 illegal drug offences.

“Police seized 1.8 kilograms of methylamphetamine, 40 grams of cannabis and items from two clandestine laboratories.

“Operation Sierra police officers also seized five firearms, a quantity of ammunition and $21,130 in cash.

“Mackay Tactical Operations Team police in Operation Sierra Nib focussed on the trafficking of methylamphetamine, cocaine, MDMA, amphetamine and cannabis.

“Between September and December last year, this Operation Sierra Nib resulted in 48 individuals being charged with 240 offences.

“Police investigators seized approximately $328,960, 415 grams of methylamphetamine and 27 firearms.”

DRUG ARM Mackay offers alcohol and other drug treatment services for the local community, and sees the devastating effects of substance abuse on a daily basis.

“In Mackay we work mainly with a group who are voluntarily seeking help or are referred to attend mandatory diversion sessions,” Drug Arm case worker Doris Scholten said. “Anecdotally, we have seen an increase in help-seeking behaviour since the COVID-19 outbreak. But this could be attributed to many things such as increased mental health pressures, anxieties, financial and employment issues, and feelings of loneliness that lead people to reach out for support.”

The number of people seeking help for substance issues varies from week to week.

“On average our Mackay team see around 690 clients per year….But in reality, the number of people we help is much higher than that through providing referrals, resources and having conversations in the community at our weekly BBQs.” Drug ARM has seen an increase in referrals com-

ing through for treatment, with alcohol a significant factor in presentations.

“Following that, we predominately see people who use amphetamines, in particular crystal methamphetamine (ice), and cannabis. In our diversion program, we often see people who commonly use ‘party drugs’ such as MDMA and cocaine. Prescribed medications are also a concern as a substance of harm in our community.”

Ms Scholten said the illicit drug market is influenced by the same forces as the legal market such as affordability, availability and quality of products.

“For example, the recent rise of methamphetamine in the drug market is likely due to the ease of manufacturing, which translates into availability and affordability” she said.

The impact of alcohol and other drug use is felt far beyond the actual symptoms, with repercussions in the home, school, workplace and wider community.

“People from all walks of life can be affected,” Ms Scholten said. “They are our friends, our colleagues, our neighbours and our family. We need to work together as a community to provide people with the tools, skills and support they need to flourish.”

Govt refuses to support Urannah Dam project THE Palaszczuk Government has refused to support North Queensland’s $1.4 billion Urannah Dam job creation project.

However Regional Development Minister, Glenn Butcher said the Palaszczuk ‘government’s election commitment is to support the proponent to progress the Urannah Dam business case, under the National Water Infra-

structure Development Fund’.

But Urannah Dam proponent, John Cotter said Mr Butcher and Mackay MP, Julieanne Gilbert have both broken their public promise to submit our funding application to the federal Government’s National Water Fund within 100-days.

“We want a funding arrangement with the federal government

and to get federal funds, North Queensland’s new dam project must have the approval of the Palaszczuk government, which is separate from state environment approvals.

This ignores many economic benefits which are not quantified by the Palaszcauk’s governments assessment framework.

“But the key issue is to get the

Queensland and federal governments to work together.”

However Minister Butcher has denied sitting on his hands and claimed that ‘all required funding agreements are in place and work commenced in late 2019, including the Queensland government making it a coordinated project to reduce red tape.

prise is using the $10 billion from the National Water Infrastructure Development Fund for a detailed business case and environmental impact assessment activities,” Mr Butcher said. “I am advised that this work is due to be completed in late 2021.

from projects like Adani, that there is a large community of supporters in north Queensland that are tired of being spoken down to by academics.

“Eventually, the residents of the north, will have to take-action and stand up to these groups that do not want us to have jobs, security of water and security for our kids to stay in the regions.”

Mr Cotter added that Bowen River Utilities Urannah Dam project’s three goals include the Collinsville Irrigation scheme, which includes 9500ha of irrigation development in a total area of 22,500

hectares. “It will purchase 75,000 million litres of water per annum at a price premium as the water is high priority; “Our Bowen Renewable Energy Hub will also have two pumped storage weirs, so water is pumped up from the river in the day-time using solar and wind and then water is released through large turbines.

“This will deliver cheaper baseload environmental produced electricity during the evenings and when industries like Riotinto’s refineries in Gladstone who will over time, require totally clean energy.”

Everybody matters, belongs

By DAVID LORNIE “EVERYBODY Belongs, Everybody Matters.”

This was the theme of Harmony Day which was celebrated last Friday at the Mackay Civic Precinct as part of Harmony Week.

Organised by Neighbourhood Hub, with support from Mackay Local Council, the day brought various mambers of our multicultural community together for the day.

Harmony Day is the annual celebration of Australia’s cultural diversity. It coincides with the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

There were various stalls set up by community groups and service providers with a jumping castle and face painting for the youngsters.

Local State Member Julieanne Gilbert was there to support the day, along with several Mackay Regional Councillors and Mayor Greg Williamson.

The Mayor, in celebrating Mackay’s cultural diversity, acknowledged the traditional owners, the Yuwi people.

“As a community, it’s really important to realise that we live

That’s why, when we come together as a community we always pay our respectsa to the Elders, past , present and those emerging.”

The Mayor highlighted the significance of Harmony Day to our local community, saying its importance “is magnified by the fact that when you look at this community…there are over

eighty different cultural groups.

“We went back to about 2013 in our citizenship ceremonies, and we counted up the number of people we made citizens in Mackay and they have come from an incredible 86 different nationalities,” he said.

“So if you didn’t think we are not a region that is multicultural, you need to think again, because this is truly a multicultural region.

“And that’s what makes such a significance for Harmony Day.

Last year we had 331 people created Australian citizens… It’s important for us to realise the theme of Harmony Day which is Everyone Matters, Everyone Belongs.”

The song We Are One, Yet We Are Many was then performed, with the Mayor introducing it by saying, “there is no better song to drive home the message about Harmony Day and what it means to Australia to be living together as one nation and one community in this tremendous place we call home”.

Hard work recognised Hoffman

MACKAY Domino’s franchisee Carl Sheppard’s hard work has been recognised by Dominos Australia with a Leadership Eagle Award.

Mr Sheppard is known for this generosity, for supporting local causes and for fund raising for local charities, schools and the disadvantaged.

Mr Sheppard recently raised funds for a family who lost everything in a Sarina house fire.

“I am honoured to be recognised with a Domino’s Leadership Eagle Award,” Mr Sheppard said. “It’s been a privilege in the past 12 months to be an active member of the Mackay community.

“Dominos provides job opportunities for Mackay’s young people, plus we often donate pizzas to health care workers who are keeping us all safe.

“A big thank you to all the local pizza lovers who have supported our business and Domino Mackay’s fundraising efforts over the years.”

Mr Sheppard now owns seven stores after working his way up in 1997 from team member to Assistant Manager and now to franchise owner.

“Eventually, I made the leap to franchisee in 2004 and took-on my first Domino’s store in Kenmore, in western Brisbane.

“Not long after that, I took on a second store in Coorparoo before heading north to Mackay to explore new store opportunities.

“I now have seven stores in Mackay, including North and South Mackay, Ayr, Hermit Park, Sarina, Andergrove and Rural view.”

Mr Sheppard said that more than anything, he enjoys the fast-paced nature of Dominos and the family work culture.

“I’ve developed my passion for bringing people closer through the world’s best bonding food, pizza and by giving back to people in Mackay.”

Rock, Paper, Scissors back on MACKAY’S Rock, Paper, Scissors, Art and Design market reopens in September after a forced b reak due to COVID-19.

Artspace Mackay Director Tracey Heathwood said the annual market started in 2013 and provides a venue for Mackay’s creative artists.

“It’s a real favourite. People come to Rock, Paper, Scissors determined to spend money and support local artists and those making arts and crafts,” Ms Heathwood said.

“It’s an opportunity to support and promote Mackay’s local artists, designers and craftsmen, who sell

really creative and unique items.

“It will be a really beautiful event at Mackay’s Civic Green, between Artspace Mackay and the Mackay Entertainment centre.”

Ms Heathwood said the market will have plenty of entertainment and live music and they are interested in hearing from local artists.

“It’s an opportunity usually for local artists to promote their work and to sell directly to buyers at the market,” she said.

“There will be lovely jewellery and beautiful handbags and we expect lots of locally handmade products.

“In the past, unique pieces of clothing were on sale and we’re really interested in creative, unique quirky items that you won’t find anywhere else.

“Mackay has many incredible artists, designers and makers we will enjoy supporting them.”

“It’s fun seeing encouraging our local artists and craftsmen at Rock, Paper Scissors,” she said.

home break-in

A HOFFMAN Drive home in Marian has allegedly been broken into between March 19 and March 20.

Once inside the home, the alleged offender found and steal a set of car keys.

Two cars were parked in the home driveway.

One of the cars was entered by the alleged offender and searched, however, nothing has been confirmed as stolen.

The second car; a grey coloured 1992 Toyota Hilux dual cab was allegedly stolen by using the keys which were taken from inside the home.

The stolen Toyota Hilux was found at 4pm on March 20 at Horse and Jockey Road in the suburb of Racecourse, completely destroyed by fire.

Regional fuel prices still rising

By ANDREW SORENSEN FUEL prices across regional Queensland have continued to rise since the beginning of 2021.

Mackay resident Jasmine Lee feels the local petrol price is definitely high.

“Compared to other towns, we are quite high,” Ms Lee said. “It’s not just recently, it has been years and I’m not the only one who says that.,” she told this newspaper.

“Many people ask the same question, just recently, I think it’s 139 - it’s madness.

“From 1.19 to 139 in a couple of weeks time? I think that’s too quick.”

“Drivers should give their business to outlets that are pricing competitively.”

RACQ spokeswoman Clare Hunter said regional fuel prices had been steadily increasing, month on month, since the beginning of the year.

“Unlike south east Queensland, regional centres like Mackay don’t have a price cycle and instead rise and fall with the global oil price, which has been trending up,” Ms Hunter said.

“Last month the average price of unleaded petrol in Mackay was 130 cents per litre (cpl), or 5cpl cheaper than the average cost of petrol in Brisbane, but since then we’ve seen the average price climb above 138 cpl.

“We urge drivers to make sure they’re filling up cheaper service stations and reward retailers offering the best deals.

“Oil prices have begun softening, after peaking on March 13, but those price falls, if sustained, can take up to a month to be passed on at the bowser, only to be wiped out if oil prices start increasing again.

“The Queensland Government is assisting motorists by introducing permanent mandato-

A spokesperson for the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said the international benchmark price for regular unleaded petrol in Australia has been steadily increasing since late 2020.

This has resulted in higher average petrol prices across most Australian cities this year.

“Prices are also generally higher in regional locations as there is less competition between petrol retailers, lower volumes of petrol being sold, higher transportation costs, and less convenience sales which can support retailers’ operating costs when petrol prices are low,” the spokesperson said.

“The fuel price comparison website PetrolSpy currently shows seven cents price differential between Mackay’s most and least expensive fuel, and we encourage drivers to give their business to outlets that are pricing competitively.”

LOCAL community organisation Habana & Districts Progress Association has successfully applied for a grant from the Department of Environment and Science’s small scale infrastructure grants scheme.

They have used the $9999 to tbuy signage, a large donation bin for the containers, and bag frames, among other equipment, to create an additional place for people to take their containers.

HDPA Secretary Palmina Rae said with Habana being 25km from Mackay – and the nearest refund point – it meant that many Habana locals didn’t opt for recycling their containers.

“By increasing the number of refund points and by being able to collect more containers, thanks to this small-scale infrastructure grant, we have grown our community of recyclers and maximised our income stream from recycling,” she said.

Ms Rae said many local small businesses benefited through the HDPA buying infrastructure materials from them.

“We’re now able to improve our hall by adding an indoor toilet and bathroom – and we can leave the outdoor dunny to the frogs and spiders!” she said.

“Also, we have spent the money in our local community, benefiting small businesses and the local economy.”

COMPETITION from mines means that Mackay’s mechanical workshops are facing an acute shortage of tradesmen.

Borgs Brake and Front End Service is just one of many Mackay businesses having difficulty attracting mechanics who are attracted to higher wages at the mines.

Proprietor, David Borg has a truely impressive string of certificate as a highly qualified tradesman and his business has a widely respected reputation for its specialist steering and suspension repairs.

But even he has difficulty retaining staff once they have completed their apprenticeships.

“Its not only me, it’s every business in Mackay that is chasing good mechanics,” David explained. “There is a shortage of every trade in Mackay and we can’t get qualified mechanics throughout the whole town.

“As soon as apprentices complete their training, they’re out to the mines to chase more money.

“So there is virtually no one in town to do mechanical repairs.”

Mr Borg said he had only managed to recruit five mechanics in two years, but can’t afford to pay higher mine wages.

There is, however, some good news for the present with a Department of Energy and Public Works spokeswoman stating Mackay’s petrol prices are currently much cheaper than they were in January.

Local motorists can currently save up to $5.50 on a tank of regular petrol, $6.50 with E10 and $8.80 on a large tank of diesel.

“Fuel prices are down nine cents per litre for petrol and 16 cents a litre for diesel,” the spokeswoman said.

“Prices have gone down as global petroleum prices fell, but motorists can still save even more by shopping around.”

Quirky signs for the times AN ENTERPRISING local couple are making and selling unique signs in Sarina.

Peter Dallas, who retired from the minigng industry in 2013, and wife Maureen have made an estimated 2000 unique signs since retirement.

The handmade signs are for sale at the Sarina Arts and Crafts Centre.

The signs are not only bought by locals, with some being sent to New Zealand, South Africa and Holland as well as all around Australia.

The signs are crafted from local timbers such as silky oak, mango, eucalypt, Mackay cedar and red cedar, and not from precut timber bought at stores.

Peter also uses recycled timber and driftwood.

“I don’t like flat and square, I like to have some character in the timber through its natural

shape,” he said. With the variety in the timbers, no two signs are the same. We’ve got hundreds of sayings which people can choose from and lots of people come to me with their own wordings, which we work through to suit the timbers.”

Peter has a few signs he is particularly proud of, including one for a chook pen called Cluckingham Palace, and a large one for a horse stud at Kinchant Dam. Maureen’s job is to keep Peter on the straight and narrow.

“My wife is a good critic on how the sign is going to look, and she does the proofreading; we doabout 12-20 signs at a time and she makes sure I do it right first time,” Peter said.

Examples of Peter and Maureen’s work are available at the Sarina Arts and Crafts Centre, which is open 10-3 Monday to Friday and 10-1 weekends.

HOMELESS single Mum, Brittany Irons has fouind herself living in short term motel accommodation until she can find somewhere permanent to call home.

However, she is currently struggling to find that dream home as she left her ID back in Bundaberg by mistake, when she was caught up in the hustle of moving.

“I just need to find a house and I don’t have ID as I think I threw our birth certificates by mistake,” Miss Irons said.

Brittany said she will solve this by getting a new licence and a new birth certificate.

“I only have a learners’ be-

cause my disability makes me scared to drive,” she said. I have ADD, ADHD, aspergers, dyslexia, autism. I cant think of the others.”

The homeless Mum and her son Nate, 3, moved from Bundaberg to Mackay as they did not want to live in a tent.

“I moved to Mackay because families are living in tents in Bundaberg and I wasn’t going to live in a tent too,” she said.

“The motel room is too small and my son gets bored because of a lack of space to play.”

Healing soul with candles

PHOENIX on Fire Candle Co-owner, Natalija Clifford started her candle business to honour her late son.

She started making candles in September, 2017, a year after her son Phoenix was stillborn.

“There was medical negligence which made me feel very depressed and so I started making candles to keep myself busy,” Natalija smiled.

“I knew I needed to do something to keep my hands busy and I thought about making candles. “ I don’t know why, I don’t where that idea came from, but more than anything, it saved my life.

“After I started making candles I found an

inner peace, especially as it was a deep learning curve.

“I enjoy every moment, plus I get nothing but praise when I sell my candles.”

Natalija Clifford said she had a lot of training and I made lots of mistakes.

“But now that I think I’ve nailed it while training myself.

“I’m also really happy with the feedback which has been amazing.”

Mrs Clifford said she is very proud of their business’s progress.

“There’s always room to grow and improve and I’m hoping to have a boutique store in five years-time.

“In the meantime I want to start with popup stalls in shopping malls as I didn’t expect our business to grow so quickly.

“It’s been a blessing and every 10 percent of a candle we sell is donated to the Stillborn Foundation, to help with research.”

Mayor’s Charity Ball back on track Support for children THE MAYORS Charity ball will be held at the MECC on May 15.

After a year’s break due to COVID-19, tickets are on sale to support Mackay’s Domestic Violence Resource Service and HeartKids.

“We funded a full-time Child and Adolescent Counsellor who

has supported about an extra 25 children and their families each week,’’ Ms Northey said.

“The funds provided an immediate solution for children who otherwise may not have been able to be seen last year.

“Immediate intervention and prevention responses are anticipated to have reduced the longer-term trauma impacts for about 150 additional children and their families in 2019.”

Ms Northey said it is worrying trend that there is an increasing number of young men and adolescent boys experiencing domestic or sexual violence, abuse and extreme trauma,” Ms Northey said.

“Our service helps those suf-

fering trauma-related depression and suicidal thoughts.

“Many are lashing out and becoming aggressive to others, particularly toward their mums.

“The pending referrals for child counselling for young men and adolescent boys – and their mums, brothers and sisters – is equivalent to a full-time counsellor’s caseload for a year.

“Our priority over the coming year is to provide innovative trauma-informed counselling and healing support to respond to the young men and boys in our community.”

CHILDREN suffering from heart disease will be supported by ticket sales for the Mackay Mayor’s Charity Ball.

The 2019 Mayor’s Charity Ball raised more than $121,000, which included a $50,000 donation on the night by Mackay Foundation.

These funds were donated to benefit Mackay kids experiencing trauma through domestic, family violence and sexual abuse.

This year’s funds will go to both HeartKids and Domestic Violence Resource Service.

HeartKids is the national not-for-profit charity which improves the quality of life for children suffering from heart disease.

HeartKids Queensland Manager Holly Williams said funds raised would be used to support Mackay children and families.

She said one in eight children are born with childhood heart disease very day in Australia, but said four lives were lost each week to the disease.

“There are about 300 people in the Mackay region who are affected by Childhood Heart Disease,’’ Ms Williams said.

“Funds raised will enable HeartKids to employ a Family Support Coordinator who will provide emotional support for individuals and families.”

Airlie goes ballistic over new craft beer THE choice of good craft beers in Airlie Beach is about to expand.

Three Queensland brewers have combined to create the BALLISTIC Brewery.

The brewery expanded from Brisbane and combined with Bundaberg’s Bargara Brewing Company and Whitsunday Islands Brewing Company.

The BALLISTIC Brewery won many awards in Brisbane and started in 2016 by David and Cassie Kitchen.

They were so successful that earlier this year, they bought Dan McLeod’s Airlie Beach-based Whitsunday Islands Brewing Company.

“Unfortunately for Dan, he had done most of the work and was due to open the venue just as COVID hit,” David and Cassie explained.

“In the end, it was too costly for Dan to have the venue and no income, so he advertised it for sale.

“I originally saw the ad and did not do anything, thinking it was too far away.

“Then one of my brewers, Jake, suggested I have another look.”

Mr Kitchen said Jake came from the Whitsundays and saw the opportunity to return home and start brewing beer close to home.

“I gave Dan a call, had a talk

to him and very soon after hopped on a plane up here to visit.

“It has been 40 years since I was last in Airlie Beach and when I got here, I absolutely loved it.

“The rest, as they say, is history!

“Dan is now a shareholder and active supporter of the Ballistic Brewery in Airlie Beach.

“We really want the brewery to become a bit of a hub for Airlie beach and for families of Cannonvale.

“We also want to have a little bit of a wow factor and so, we have enhanced the site.

“Dan had done most of the work getting the brewery ready and there were a few things that

still had to be sorted in the taproom and the outside beer garden.

“We have been working on these and installing a whole lot of beer taps.

“Dan had six beer taps but we think having 12 taps is better.

“We have a huge range of beer and six taps would not have covered half our range.

“Emma, our venue manager, is a well-known local and she will definitely be recruiting in the next couple of weeks for venue staff.

“If you love craft beer and talking to people, then drop a CV into the brewery.

“As sales expand, we may even need an extra brewer, salesperson, or delivery driver.”

Tiger lands firmly on his feet A TOUGH old tabby cat has finally found a loving home after a life of bold adventure on the streets of Mackay.

For years, “Tiger the Harbour Cat”, who has been described as “huge, with a big head and pure muscle”, had made his home in the drains around Mackay Harbour.

He became friends with workers and customers at a nearby café who were charmed by the streetwise tabby and made sure he had enough to eat.

However, there were those around the café that took a dislike to Tiger and offered to kill him.

The café staff, concerned for his safety, started a collection to raise money for Tiger so he could be prepared for re-homing.

Ros Lowry and Robin Morgan from Mackay Pound Rescue organised Tiger’s desexing, microchipping, vaccination and worming.

“The café people and customers put money in to have his vet work done,” Robin said. “The kindness of strangers has given this boy a new life. He’s such a beautiful cat.”

Ros and Robin found a foster home for Tiger at Bakers Creek where he stayed for several days. However, he soon escaped.

“We put up flyers on the street and went out looking for him,” Robin said.

There were a few sightings in the community until a Facebook post caught Pound Rescue’s attention.

“It was posted on Facebook that he’d been found,” Ros said. “We went and check his microchip and confirmed it was Tiger.”

The streetwise feline had found his way from Bakers Creek to Paget and took up residence in a workshop, where he was welcomed by the staff there.

“It took him four months to get there,” Ros said. “He just found his place (to live) then found his way into everybody’s heart.”

Tiger’s days living on the street are now over and he is settled nicely in his new home. He has even taken to sleeping inside the office at night.

“Everyone loves him,” said Robin, “he’s happy now.”

Bike trail planned for Finch virginia

TWO highly engaging meetings were held at the Finch Hatton RSL on Thursday March 18 to discuss the proposed Mountain Bike Trailhead designs.

The Mackay Council team of project planners, members of the Mountain Bike Alliance group, supporting town councillors and Council support staff were in town to explain how the consultative process was proceeding, as well as how community suggestions are being integrated into the overall design.

Interested visitors from Mackay and Marian also attended with local residents and productive discussions flowed easily once the three concept designs were laid out for amendment.

Small groups gathered around the impressive, laminated concept designs and. Bold red and black marker lines, arrows and comments suddenly appeared with alternate suggestions made by those in attendance.

over the conceptual designs. Other attendees drifted to the new improved detailed map of the proposed trails between Finch Hatton and Eungella. Many questions regarding where and how the proposed shuttle routes would operate were answered as clearly as possible at this early stage.

age of Finch Hatton and the range to Eungella clearly outlined property boundaries and showed how the trails would operate between and around the junction nodes which defined the trails.

What became evident with this presentation was how the people and traffic proposed flow would operate in our township.

It showed how the tracks down the range would converge into the Finch Hatton Trailhead which provided event base facilities, a car park, the existing building, a Community Park area, a Pump Track and main Piazza.

There is also the added attraction of the Kungurri Rail Turntable and a cycle and pedestrian boulevard from the park into town. The complexity of getting each element of this plan working in conjunction with the rest could clearly be understood by all.

The Council planning team had plenty of detail to take back to their desks and mentioned how impressed they were with the enthusiasm displayed by the participants.

House with history MACKAY’S oldest house has seen a lot after the city was declared a municipality.

The cottage, built in the 1870s, has had many different through the years.

Frank Mason bought the house in 2007 at an auction.

After one of his previous tenants moved out, he was ready to sell the house.

Before putting the property on the market, he decided to do some research on the house to determine a good price.

He contacted the Mackay Historical Society to help uncover the house’s mysterious past and was alerted to the historical significance of his home.

The earliest record of ownership is from 1915, citing a Mr Cecil as owner of the house.

An advertisement appeared in the then printed Daily Mercury for a tender for the sale and removal of a portion of the old District Hospital Building.

The tender advised a sum of $496 would be accepted, and a Mr Tickle purchased the hospital building.

He then removed the building by a bullock by the end of February, 1923.

An advertisement then appeared for seven dozen 1.5 metre blocks of either sap, blood wood or iron bark, which was presumed to be for the stumping of the house.

In 1921, William Tickle purchased the house from Mr Cecil and had the title registered in 1926 from the Queensland Government.

Mr Mason said the house is rumoured to have been the home of the late Senator Ian Woods, but is unable to confirm it.

While uncertain about selling the house, he would love to see the house become an item of historical significance within the town.

Mr Mason said he would also consider the house becoming a unique office, coffee shop or even a restaurant. However, he said he was just as willing to allow it to become a residential property, but said he does not want to see it destroyed.

Truth at mineface or boardroom?

IF YOU are a coal miner or one of the many thousands working for contractors or suppliers to coal mines, reading the high level financial advisors must be confusing, if not worrying.

At the mineface, new mines are being developed and existing mines are pumping out tonnes of coal, with even the China import bans, which is hardly causing a hiccup in supply.

That’s because the Bowen Basin mines produce the world’s best quality coal and most efficiently.

That’s attested to by the tens of millions of Chinese who shivered over their recent winter.

This is because of electricity shortages caused by their state mines inability to supply and the low thermal quality of their coal for power generation.

Similarly, their steel mills struggled without high quality Queensland coking coal.

And when China banned Australian coal imports, coal buyers from India, Pakistan, Europe and even Brazil stepped in and took shiploads at even higher prices.

So if there’s a commodity in demand at profitable prices, why would the boards of the mining companies be more nervous than a canary being sent down a gassy mine face?

Rio sold most of its coal assets, despite being profitable but it has hung onto hugely loss making copper mines in Mongolia.

BHP is now reported to be considering selling their majority share in its two joint ventures in the Bowen Basin with Japanese trading houses Mitsubishi and Mitsui. They are at least whispering to investment managers about that.

It appears this is because far, far away from the mineface, boards of directors, most of whom wouldn’t know a mine if they stumbled into one, are facing politically correct ‘investor pressure’.

These are investor advisors and directors who, in their corporate soirees in the great investment capitals of the world, are most likely to be talking ‘corporate social responsibility’ or ‘environmental carbon contributions’ and other such very correct phrases.

Mining directors, like those of the great investment banks, got away with the first round of pressure by serving ’organic’ board lunches and publicising the CEO’s new electric limousine.

And some even run their corporate jets on biofuel – which you don’t get on economy on Jetstar or the Alliance FIFO flight.

Now the pressure has escalated and RIO has sold its coal mines to keep its copper dog.

BHP is facing the investor pressure from London, New York and even Shanghai investment managers.

That’s why you are hearing so much about steel being made with hydrogen rather than metallurgical coal.

And why the big iron ore miners have thrown a few million here and there into hydrogen developments.

But the timeline for this, especially if the hydrogen manufacture is ‘fully green’ (meaning its huge electricity consumption comes from solar or wind power rather than coal fired generators), is put at 20 to 30 years.

That’s a lot of years supplying metallurgical coal for a growing steel demand – while new coal mines are being developed in the Bowen Basin and elsewhere around the world.

But, of course, at a board level they have to be seen to be acting green – and protecting their core iron ore profit drivers.

Currently iron ore out of Western Australia has a 70 percent cash profit margin, versus 10 to 20 percent for coal. Most businesses would love a 10 to 20 percent profit margins, including most of the suppliers to the big mining companies.

But apparently the big miner directors might be willing to throw coal overboard, to protect apparently greener iron ore and copper mining.

Regardless of the boardroom antics, one fact is certain.

So long as the Bowen Basin continues to efficiently produce high quality coal, there’s a market for decades to come.

That’s the pragmatic truth of the matter – but not what you will hear over a boardroom lunch.

I still miss my best friend but hopefully soon, she will also relocate to Mackay and we can get back into having our cuppa’s and random drives again and of course, more matching tattoo’s! She’s more like a sister to me now.

en of minority groups whose sufferings may have been overlooked.

Many of these groups heavily male dominated by tradition and religious beliefs, approve girls at 12 or even less of marriageable age, while even some disfigured by female circumci-

sion, seemingly with public approval despite these children being minors unable to give legal consent.

Astonishing that medical leaders in these countries don’t seem to speak out against the process of immature bodies enduring pregnancy and birth.

As these things still occur even here in Australia in underground fashion they have no place in our laws, yet this still happens.

Congratulations to the women speakers offering hope for all, but there are some tough boundaries that

need to be overcome. Women are not a subspecies or quaint toys but have a need for respect and acknowledgement of women’s status, as it should be.

The Conservatorium of Music is committed to providing top-quality training for all things music and with excellent women like Nicole Thompson and Sarah Rozekrans being awesome, and the highly skilled prowess of Kyra Geoghegan, the young crew on board seem to be in incredibly talented hands. Every year, Judith Brown lures the best professionals to the CON to direct shows for the eager young stars of tomorrow and one of Qld’s newest residents, fresh from starring in The Producers, James Lee will direct the play Woman on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown in June. I have known James for many years and can assure you that this will be one of the shows of the season.

In a world of has beans and has bloody nots, it nice to know the ace ones. Miki Boyd is one of those all-round top achieving women who brightens up every room or mum car she takes you to rotary in.

A community minded cat lover and poet, she comes from particularly good stock and just because her mum was my first vote as an adult and that excellent mayor we all loved, Miki has carved out her own career. From radio to copy writing and acting onstage, Miki finds herself deliriously happy these days as the boss of Savy Scripts.

Woke lads with moustaches and ripped jeans, cool gals in sexy hats and big glasses, who are all music lovers celebrating a local lad rockin’ it out. It’s so 70’s, I love it!

Jonte dreams of stardom

MACKAY singer Jonte Tupaea has produced his first EP, which is also on Spotify, Your Tube, Apple Music and Sound Cloud.

And, over the weekend, he received an amazing award from Fast Track Talent Showcase.

The award includes flight and accomodation to Melbourne, along with performance opportunities and a professional mentoring sessions with YoYo Music.

Jonte (pictured above) wrote the first song for his new EP a year ago when he received a grant from the Regional Arts Development Fund.

He took advantage of the grant to record his EP with Footstamp

Music on the Gold Coast.

“It took five days to produce my EP and UI was hekped by Josh Beattie who produced the music,” Jonte said.

“It took four days to record the EP and each day we recorded another song.

“On the fifth day, we cleanedup the music and ensured a crisp sound.”

Jonte said his visit included organising that the instrumentals and vocals were correct.

“Footstamp Music provided a valuable insight to music production and it was an awesome opportunity to meet some of the

producers. My first single, Lay Me Off, has just been released and a second single will be released next month.

“My four track EP will be released in May and it will be streamed on Spotify, Your Tube, Apple Music and Sound Cloud.”

Jonte Tupaea is passionate about his craft and dreams of a career as a musician.

“I have been inspired by performing with an Australian musicians lijke Busby Marou who have toured internationally.

“Each song represents represents my different experiences and I’ve been guided by my family and friends.”

Properties are always moving in Mackay

Mackay Real Estate holds momentum

THE latest quarterly property prices are in and the strong market conditions in Mackay continued through to December 2020 with median house prices higher yet again than previous quarters.

Over the year, the region posted growth of 4.5 per cent to push its median house price to the highest level in five years. Interestingly, an undersupply of listings is creating significant competition for stock with most properties selling within 10 days.

Mackay has continued its run of property price growth with another median house price increase, ending 2020 at $370,000.

After a number of years of fairly average market conditions, the Mackay median house price is now the highest it has been for five years.

According to CoreLogic, the last time Mackay had a significant undersupply of property for sale was way back in 2011. Demand for houses is being predominantly driven by local buyers, however, with most properties selling soon after listing, they’re becoming increasingly frustrated when they miss out – especially first home buyers.

The Mackay market remained buoyant right up to the Christmas period and then took a breather for only a week or so before continuing with its strong market conditions. The strength of the housing market is reflected in the sales volume figures, which recorded a 30 per cent jump over the year ending December 2020.

However, the strong market

conditions for houses have yet to really flow through to the region’s unit sector, which is still recording soft results. Over the December quarter, the median unit price recorded a -16.2 per cent reduction in price, but this is most likely due to more affordable unit stock selling over the same period. A more reliable barometer of the unit market is what happened over the year ending December 2020 with a small reduction of in median price of -1.3 per cent recorded to finish the year on $221,000.

The median price of units in Mackay is now one of most affordable of all major regions across the State, behind Gladstone, and is a situation that’s likely to become more attractive to local buyers and investors as the housing market continues to heat up.

Meanwhile, the region’s commercial property sector is also performing strongly, especially industrial, with robust demand from buyers and tenants.

It seems that local buyers were slower than many other areas across Queensland to take up the Federal Government’s HomeBuilder initiative, with land sales taking a while to pick up last year.

However, as available listings in the established market started to tighten, this situation started to change.

That said, the number of new land estates and building approvals in the Mackay region were at low levels prior to the pandemic, meaning there wasn’t a huge supply of options instantly available.

The situation has since changed with building approvals increasing significantly over recent months – albeit still well below what they were during the peak of the boom several years ago.

The median price of vacant land in Mackay recorded a marginal increase over the year, up 0.6 per cent to $180,000. The most telling figure in the region’s land data, though, is the sharp uptick in the volume of sales, which posted a jump of 71 per cent compared to the year prior. This significant increase in demand has put a strain on the local construction pipeline with a shortage of qualified trades now common.

And finally, while Mackay’s rental market started to move into undersupply territory a few years ago, this pandemic has just added to a situation that was already under way. The region’s vacancy rate is now just 0.9 per cent with strong weekly rent increases being recorded.

Local landlords who held on to their properties during soft sales and rental market conditions are now welcoming some much-needed rent and property price growth. The stronger market conditions may see some investors offload their portfolio over coming months, keen to claw back some positive results after a very long wait.

The median weekly rent for a two-bedroom unit in Mackay has jumped 9.3 per cent over the year to $295 while the median weekly rent for a three-bedroom house has increased 6.8 per cent to $395 over the same period. These robust rises in weekly rents have resulted in gross rental yields also firming – the gross rental yield for houses increased from 5.1 per cent in the September quarter to 5.3 per cent in December.

The result is even more pronounced for unit yields, which have soared from 6.9 per cent to 8.1 per cent over the same period.

Demand for auction HOME auctions in Mackay are increasing as demand as houses vastly exceeds supply.

Peter Francis of Black Real Estate explained that auctions really suit a property which is special and has a lot of buyer appeal.

“So, if your selling a property which is unique, has ocean frontage, or is a beautiful Queenslander on a large block, then auctioning in Mackay is the way to go,” he said.

“Auctioning is a much more popular way of selling houses in Brisbane, especially when there are many more buyers than houses for sale.

“For example, two weeks ago, one agent in Brisbane auctioned 48 properties and 47 were sold, possibly because more people are migrating north.

“Some of these sellers exceeded the reserve by five percent above their asking price, which can amount to a lot of money.

“So if competition is fierce and there is a lack of stock, then auctioning your homes in Mackay could be a good option.

“In fact, we’ve seen properties where there are multiple buyers all asking to put in an offer.”

Sentinel buys three medical centres PROPERTY entrepreneur Sentinel, has just paid $22,629,343 to buy added three MacKay’s medical centres.

Sentinel now holds about $250.8 million in commercial real estate Mackay and Townsville.

These three super clinics are leased to Gp Mx Solutions/Smart Clinics and Better Medical.

The yield is 6.52 per cent and these transactions were negotiated by Shalain Singh and Chris O’Driscoll of Colliers International.

The GP Super Clinic’s at Walkerston and Ooralea include 14year leases to Gp Mx Solutions, while the GP Super Clinic in Rural View was sold with a 10-year

lease to Gp Mx Solutions.

Sentinel Executive Chairman and Chief Investment Officer, Warren Ebert, said these medical centres will be included in the newly established Sentinel Multi-Sector Income Trust.

“Sentinel has heavily invested in the Mackay region and we delighted to add regional health centres to our growing commercial property portfolio,” Mr Ebert said.

“Mackay has been an important regional market in Sentinel success over the past decade and we have tremendous confidence in the region’s economic future.

Avoid legal pitfalls IT IS important to avoid legal traps and pitfalls when buying and selling your home.

Especially as buyers and sellers may not be aware of the property conveyancing process.

Kelly Legal’s Property Law Centre’s Sue Bonehill smiled when explaining that times have changed from the days when five people met in a ‘darkened room’ to exchange settlement documents.

“We were the first conveyancing and legal firm in Mackay to use the online PEXA property settlement conveyancing system, which automates and can fasttrack property settlements,” she said.

“Nowadays 95 percent of conveyancing businesses carry out conveyancing settlements online.

“In the past, there was a meeting which included two representatives from the releasing bank which hold the mortgage of the home being sold and the advancing bank financing the purchase.

“In the same room were lawyers for both the buyer and seller, plus a clerk to take sale documents to the Queensland Government’s titles office to pay stamp duty.”

Ms Bonehill explained that it is important to use a lawyer to seek advice to ensure that there are no hidden complicating and possibly delaying property sales.

“This can include an unknown easements by a government agency, or by a neighbour allowing access onto the property being sold.

“A home being sold might also have a legal caveat for money owed on Council rates, or as a guarantee on a loan.”

However Ms Bonehill said a computerised PEXA property settlement means that payment is instant and money is in the sellers bank within an hour.

Hooked on Mackay goes viral THE “HOOKED on Mackay” Facebook page is an initiative of Mackay Regional Council and is both an outcome and action of the Mackay Recreational Fishing Strategy.

Mayor Greg Williamson said Council had invested heavily in marketing campaigns to promote the fact that for 365 days of the year anglers have access to tremendous fishing options in our region.

“Council’s marketing strategy included the creation of the Hooked on Mackay brand,” Mayor Williamson said. Hooked on Mackay

has a Facebook following of more than 4000 anglers with about half of those coming from outside of the region.

“Through viral marketing, posts on that page have reached up to 300,000 people,” he said. “The Hooked on Mackay website has wracked up more than 5000 visits, and Instagram and Youtube offerings have also recently been created, all highlighting how amazing fishing is in our region.

“To further encourage the fishers of Australia to become ‘hooked on Mackay’, council has taken 23 magazine advertisements in popular

North of Proserpine left unscathed A MAJOR weather system attacked most of the east coast of Australia earlier this week.

North of Proserpine was mostly left unscathed however South East Qld and NSW copped truckloads of rain.

Also some isolated pockets in the region did get alot of rain as well. Reports confirm Clairview copped over 400mm of rain from 1AM Monday to 1PM Monday.

Parts of Mackay recieved around

50mm. Some parts of the Pioneer Valley recorded over 100mm. All this rain was all linked to the same weather system that caused major flooding in areas of SEQ and NSW. The change has began to move in over Wednesday night which has now ended the event and allowed clean up to begin for majorly affected areas.

On the Weather Front: As a High Pressure system established

itself over most of Australia, that will now stabilise the weather for a few days.

There is some more rain on the forecast next week so maybe get the lawns mowed before the end of the weekend.

4x4 welcomes members WHITSUNDAY 4x4 Club runs short and longer cross-country trips for four-wheel-drive owners.

Secretary Jodi McDonald said numerous enquiries had encouraged them to hold a meeting and form a Four-Wheel-Drive Club.

A few meetings were held and by the third meeting, Ms McDonald said she and a few others decided to incorporate and form the club.

“Since then, we have gone on many exciting off-road adven-

tures,” she said. “We’ve crossed off many amazing items on Members’ bucket lists include a trip to Cape York, which members talked about for years.

“These big trips tend to run for two to three weeks and we always get a huge number of club members joining in.

“In 2018, we went to Frazer Island and then to the Simpson Desert in 2019, which were very popular highlights.”

Jodie added that the WHITSUNDAY 4x4 Club also run

smaller scale trips to national parks. “The Club has a great relationship with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, who allow us to drive to sites that would normally be off-limits.

“Prospective members are welcome, as long as they meet a 4x4 safety requirements and their vehicles are up-to-code.

“Members must also go on at least one trip.

“This is to see if they fit in with other Club members and enjoy camping.”

The Trans-Am is a racing car series created in 1966 by Sports Car Club of America president John Bishop.

Airlie darts meeting ‘cagey’

Good racing luck nugget’s notes racing columnist

COUNTRY owners in Central Queensland in March have hit a huge vein of luck with an extremely big month.

Several Central Queensland owners are revelling in some of the best times of their lives in racing with former Rockhampton galloper Marway which is raced by the Wagner family in Springsure making it 2 wins from 3 starts since joining the Sydney stable of Mark Newnham.

On March 10th Marway scored an exciting win in the benchmark 78 handicap on the midweek program on the Kensington track with Joshua Parr in the saddle.

Former Blackall resident‘s Michelle and Ken Walker are locked in for the ride of a lifetime with boom Rockhampton juvenile filly Sweet Dolly which was bought by the Walkers for just $1500 as a weanling. Sweet Dolly is trained by Rockhampton trainer Kevin Hansen.

The Rockhampton trained filly with regular jockey Justin Stanley onboard took out the $500 k QTIS 2yo jewel at the Gold Coast over the March magic millions sales race day.

To top it all off, Rockhampton trained galloper from Graham Greens stable Ahooshu made it a Rockhampton quinella at big odds taking home $90 k in prize money to put the the spotlight right on Central Queensland gallopers.

The offers are coming thick and fast to buy Sweet Dolly with the Walkers having previously knocked back offers of $400,000 from an Australian buyer for the filly and word on the track several six figure sums have been thrown around to purchase the filly but the answer from the Walkers remains a flat no.

After years of owning and running a transport business in Blackall, Walkers transport, they retired to the Capricornia Coast and in recent times Ken (stumpy) has not been in good health but Sweet Dolly has given him a new lease on life with his health. Her long term goals are the prestigious group races over the Queensland Winter carnival.

A big convoy of Central Queenslanders were on course at the Gold Coast including Emerald resident Glen Dickson who is Michelle’s brother.

He said he didn’t own a share in Sweet Dolly but just being part of the journey with his sister is one of his biggest thrills in his time in racing and he hoped there would be more big days of celebration.

Last but not least, former Central West residents Dan and Rae Fletcher and the Queensland colts syndicate it has been a mixture of ectasy and agony then ectasy after Russian Camelot ran an extremely brave second placing on March 12th in the All Star Mile at Moonee Valley behind the Kris Lee’s Runner Mugatoo.

Russian Camelot’s placing carried $720,000 in prize money. Sadly Russian Camelot has been retired to stud after pulling a tendon and connections are working through a variety of potential stud deals which will no doubt be an extremely lucrative proposition for all involved.

Last Friday night the Tony Mcenvoy trained filly Sisstar a full sister to their now retired champion mare Sunlight scorched the turf at Moonee Valley taking out the 55 second challenge and recording the quickest time of the summer series which included a $55k bonus.

The smart filly could be a late bloomer and could stamp herself as a group performer in a nice Autumn stakes race.

Goldstars take on Capras in the opening game on Saturday

Cutters sliced by Dolphins THE 2021 Instrust Super Cup season at the BB Print Stadium kicked off with a victory the visiting Redcliffe Dolphins over the local Cutters.

Within the first ten minutes Cutters’ fullback Matiu Stone Dunn opened up his team’s account with a try under the sticks, easily converted by Jack Quinn.

Dolphins quickly retaliated with their first try, taking the score to six-all.

The visitors were on a roll, getting the next try, however the conversion was unsuccessful leaving the score at six-10.

Again the Dolphins scored with a lucky conversion when the ball hit the uprights and bounced back between them.

Just when the Dolphins looked like they were going to run away with the game with eight seconds to go in the first half, Cutters’ fleet-footed Josh Smith put one over the line. This was again con-

verted by Jack Quinn, bringing the score to 12-16.

During the halftime break, the Under Sevens from Sarina, Norths, Brothers Blue and Wanderers treated the crowd to some great entertainment. The future of rugby league in Mackay is in good hands.

Five minutes into the second half, Cutters’ Kyle Kennedy went over in the corner to bring the scores even. The Dolphins quickly answered back by scoring their first try of the second half, taking the score to 16-22.

Emry Pere was next to go over for the Cutters with the successful conversion by Kyle Kennedy.

The score was now 22-22, with the game now rising to the next level. Things got a bit heated when Josh Smith was involved in some rough play and found himself in the sin-bin for 10 minutes.

The crowd roared with displeasure at the umpiring decision as

play continued with Cutters one man down.

Playing with 12 players, the Cutters let in another try and the score was 22-26.

The Dolphins put in another quick another try, taking the score to 22-30.

However, the Cutters stayed strong and with five minutes left on the clock Blake Paskins found a gap in the Dolphins’ defense and slipped through for a well-received try.

The conversion from Kyle Kennedy bought the final score to 28-30.

After the game, a disappointed Cutters’ coach Michael Crawley told this newspaper, “It was disappointing because we worked really hard on our ball control in training and the pressure of the game, that’s what its about.

“We’ve just got to get used to that pressure of being able to execute.”

LAST week, Airlie Beach Darts Premier League started off round four with a meeting between Aaron Paull and Nathan O’Hara, both of whom were searching for their first win of the season.

It began as a cagey affair as neither player wanted to go four and zero at such an early stage of the season. However Aaron ended up claiming his first win this year coming out on top winning 6-4.

Elsewhere, last years champion Gene Birse continue his impressive start to the 2021 campaign with a comfortable win over Garry Robbie at 6-0 and claiming a bonus point.

His rival for the top spot Jamie Woods followed suit, beating Jason Rockstroh in similar fashon 6-0 and also claiming a bonus point.

Both men claimed joint top spot on the ladder with Gene slightly ahead on leg difference.

Those boys are closely followed by Seumas Rose in 3rd spot who also claimed an impressive 6-1 victory over Dick O’Hara.

Mackay District Bowlers in strong showing

MACKAY district bowlers were very competitive in the 2021 Challenge Cup but ended up as runners-up behind a strong North Queensland side.

Mackay started their campaign against Far North Tropical Queensland with Peter Blackburn’s team of Paul Foot, Wade Vidulich and Rick Dunn winning 29-14, Wade Cranston’s eam of Steve Mau, Les Rodgers and Barry Brown ahed 19-13 while Wayne Handley’s team of Nathan Dodds, Steve Boyce and Steve Ridolfi lost 17-23.

All three teams had success against the

Atherton Tablelands, Blackburn winning 20-12, Handley 24-14 and Cranston 20-16.

Mackay and North Queensland went into the final match with two wins but the Thunder were too cos=nsistent overall, taking out the three matches for victory. Blackburn lost 14-27, Handley went down by just one shot, 19-20, and Cranston lost 11-23.

It was a good overall effort by the Mackay boys and a valuable hit out before the State District Sides Champoinships in Brisbane at the end of April.

Meanwhile, the Marian Mill Shield has

attacted nine clubs this weekend, with the strong Souths Suburban Club a notable exception.

The event will be played at Marian and Gargett tomorrow, with the finals at Marian on Sunday.

The draw is Marian 9.00am Saturday City v Wests Tigers and at 1.00pm Seafiorth v the morning winner and Marian v Northern Beaches. At Gargett 1.00pm Saturday North Mackay v Pioneer Valley and Sarina v Mackay.

Tight match in Walkerston finals victory

Nathan Fowler gets some pre-match batting practice CRICKET umpires Col Morris and Warren Husking described last weekend’s Cup final match as one of the best they have ever umpired.

They complimented both teams’ skippers and players on the excellent way in which the match was played in terms of skill and spirit.

Walkerston triumphed over a gallant Brothers in the grand final of Mackay Cricket’s Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal’s Poole Cup competition at Harrup Park last Saturday.

Brothers batted first and managed 171 runs for the loss of 8 wickets from a rain shortened innings of 38 overs.

Walkerston’s Joel Bock dealt a hammer blow to the Brothers innings after they had made a positive start by dismissing opener Ian Kelly (21 runs from 36 balls) and number three Chris Dunn for a golden duck.

This was followed up by a wicket to Scott Randles the following over to dismiss star batsmen Nathan Fowler for a Duck.

Top scorers for Brothers Michael Dunn (49 runs form 81 balls) and Matthew Deeth (37 runs from 58 balls) managed to steady the Brothers innings with with a 77 run partnership but then they too fell in quick succession to the guile of Joel Bock when the

Brothers total was only 137. In all, Bock recorded match figures of six wickets for 29 runs from his eight overs and finished the Poole Cup Competition (including finals) with 38 wickets at an average of less than 10.

Walkerston made a flying start in their run chase as opener Jakob Frerichs blasted 41 runs from 34 balls and looked to be in a strong position.

Three quick wickets from Nathan Fowler to dismiss Neil Gustavson, Sam Vassallo and Luke Kennedy brought the outcome back into the balance.

Needing six to win of the final over of the match, Walkerston’s Adam Knezevic and Scott Randles held their nerve to secure victory with two balls to spare.

Walkerston’s skipper Luke Kennedy was ecstatic with the result, particularly as his team had finished runners up last season after missing out on contesting the grand final due to COVID restrictions.

For Brothers, their skipper Matthew Wicks will disappointed with the result but was proud of his team’s performance.

He was confident his team would be back more determined than ever to break their premiership drought next season.

Grades go to Scrubby

WALKERSTON (Scrubby) claimed the honours and premiership glory in three out of the four grades being contested in the Senior Men’s Cricket competition at Harrup Park last Saturday.

In second grade, Walkerston secured the trophy for the second straight year with the annihilation of a lackluster Norths team.

Norths batted first and were bowled out for 58. James Green starred for Scrubby with 5 wickets for 16 runs from his 7 overs. Nick Lotarski also chipped in with 3 wickets for 16 runs from 6.3 overs.

In reply, Walkerston chased that total down in the 16th over for the loss of only their two openers Darren Edge (17 off 43 balls) and Thomas Vandenberg (14 runs off 26 balls).

In third grade, Walkerston’s defeated Pioneer Valley Green.

Walkerston’s batting ace Lance Ryan was the rock of his side’s innings, scoring 56 runs off 79 balls.

At Pinnacle, Walkerston were set a total of 180 for victory in the fourth grade final. For Pinnacle, Phillip Trendell scored 40 runs off 33 balls and Damien Russell scored 35 off 26. Walkerston’s run chase fell 6 runs short against Pinnacle. Stuart Holledge top scored for Walkerston with 46 runs off 94 balls. Pinnacle bowler Phillip Trendell took 4 wickets from 34 runs from his 6 overs.

FROM BACK PAGE “I played a few different sports growing up I just found cricket was where my passion was. So, if you are interested in it, find a club that’s going to support you “he said.

As for the current season Jakob said one particular match stood out for him.

“The best match was probably one we ended up losing personally. It was against the Magpies. We ended up needing two off the last ball and we just weren’t able to get there in the end. But I batted pretty well personally.”

And his best cricketing experience of all time was his first year playing for first grade. “we ended up playing Norths in the final and we ended winning that quite convincingly not only just the game, but the partying afterwards was really fun as well with the boys,” he said.

As for his cricketing future, Jakob said he would like to test his skills against players on a higher platform.

“I want to push myself to be selected north Queensland country,” he said. “Hopefully I can make it.

I do have goals and aspirations of always trying to get better and see how far I can take my game personally,” he said.

Forty run into damp conditions

OVER forty runners braved extremely damp conditions last Sunday morning for the annual Whibley’s Wander 5km and 12km.

Hosts Julie and Andrew invited runners and their supporters to enjoy the out and back 5km and 12km courses with a celebratory sausage sizzle as a reward. Many thanks to them and Ally for allowing Mackay Road Runners to take over their back deck and yard.Mackay Road Runners Club thank all race day volunteers and hosts for an enjoyable morning.

Both races started from the top-secret garden location exit with runners bursting onto the roads from the suburban pathways. Bil Morgan crossed the finish line first in the 5km ahead of first female, big improver Carolyn Steginga, both revelling in the rainy conditions.

Carmel Grech had an excellent

outing, taking silver ahead of third placed female Jo Hughes. Darrin Pullen, Werner Van der Linde and Shane Dodds secured the minor male placings. It was an amazing effort from returning athlete Peter Wright to be the fifth male in the 5km ahead of Andrew Short, Daniel Walker, John Couldrey.

First male in the 12km, Rodney Elworthy continued his amazing form by claiming first ahead of Alex Couldrey, Mick Scholer and Joe Grech. Pelting rain as well as heavy grass underfoot did not deter Cristian Smith and Demi Caldwell from a spectacular sprint finish in the final straight.

Second placed female Alana Knesevic ran an outstanding 12km, collecting silver for her efforts ahead Glynis Forse who outpaced talented triathlete Dee McMurtrie.

phen Oberg, Derek Woods, Judy Zahn, Vicki Vickers, Jose Short, Carmel Mahon, Mark McFadzen, Tim Caddy, Shane Donnollan, Michael Feenaghty, Arthur Dick, Peter Ellison, Robin Stinson, Martin Lambert, Scott McIntosh, Tim Magoffin, Alan Zamparutti, David Isbister, Brenda Windsor, Carol Brown and Jan Smith.

This Sunday’s aptly named Tim’s Chariots of Fire 5km and 10km will have runners enjoying the scenic vistas of the Slade Point and Lamberts Beach suburbs.

Runners must be locked in with the registrar by 6.15am at the lastest from Tim’s place at 16 Ocean Avenue, Slade Point.

Members must be registered by this time to allow timekeepers to ready themselves at the start line.

Softball becoming popular with local youths

Young Mackay Dragon a rising star

Jaxon Maluga, Alex Tassan, Emmett Counsell, Tighe Mohan and Yodene Schoeman SOFTBALL may not be the most well-known sporting pastime in Australia, but it is becoming popular with local youths.

And some of these young sportspeople are heading towards State championships.

Jaxon Maluga, Alex Tassan, Tighe Mohan and Emmett Counsell are all in the under 14 boys Central Queensland team while Miley Barrow and Yodene Schoeman are in the CQ girls’ team for the under 14s.

The boys are set to play in Redcliff in April 10 to 12 while the girls will be playing at the same time in

Maryborough. The youths are all in the same team which combines Mackay, Rockhampton and Gladstone teams.

James Allen, Keeva Mohan and Jaxon Maluga will also play 14th to 17th April in Lismore for Queensland.

These playes are members of different teams, with Alex Tighe, Vodene and Emmett playing for Dragons, with Jaxon and Miley in the Hawks side.

After they play the state championships a Queensland squad will be formed.

MACKAY Dragons U16 player James Allen is an up and coming local softball star.

“In 2018 I wanted to try a new sport as I had an injury,” he said.

The thing he enjoys most about softball is “that you get to meet a lot of new people through the pathways and meet new friends”.

James’ most memorable time playing the game was playing for Queensland at a national level.

He has attended the 10-12yr Schoolboys Nationals in 2018, QLD state championships in 2019 (U14 and U16), U14 Nationals in Sydney in 2019, Umpired at 10-12 Schoolboys Nationals in Sydney in 2019, Qld State titles 2020 – U16 in Hervey Bay and U18 in Toowoomba.

His favourite match was the 2020 U16 State Titles Grand Final where his CQ team won the State Titles.

Remember to always have fun and enjoy the game,” he says.

Brothers welcome familiar faces SATURDAY saw the sun shine despite the threat of rain and Brothers Netball welcomed some familiar faces back to the Lyn Law netball courts on Saturday.

This was for the first grading day of 2021 netball.

The club was excited to wel-

come Maddi Long back to the club as the new coach being mentored by Melissa Ferrier.

They also had new young umpire Olivia Leigh starting on the weekend.

The 12’s Cherubs did very well with quite a few coming up from last year’s Go Program.

The 14’s Flutes team also did a great job and the younger ones who moved up from the 12’s division last year blended well with the older girls to pull two out of three wins.

Grading continues this weekend with the season starting on April 24th.

OLYMPIC hockey gold medallist Tracey Belbin has made an huge impact on a group of talented Mackay junior hockey players in recent months.

This has culminated in a record number of players being selected to compete at the National Titles over the Easter school holidays.

As a Queensland Sporting Hall of Fame recipient, Belbin’s hockey skills are a huge asset for the local sport. She represented Australia at two consecutive Summer Olympics in the 80s and 90s, where she won the gold medal with the Women’s National Team.

Belbin started working with the high-performance squad of Mackay junior hockey players in 2020 and the results have been immediate for a group of U15 and U18 local players.

“Our high-performance group includes any player selected in the State system for the U15 competition and over,” Belbin said.

“We planned on starting to train this squad in February last

year, but when COVID impacted training, we restarted in October.

We have been going hard since then with a lot of success with a number of players being selected in State teams recently.”

The aim of the program is to help talent-identified athletes by introducing them to high-performance concepts.

“We have brought in external expertise from the hockey fraternity to conduct a range of sessions with the athletes – including boxing and Pilates sessions, as well as power, flexibility and fitness testing,” Belbin said.

“We are trying to raise the bar in what we expose them to because if they go away and become part of academy groups or similar, they will have already been familiar with some of the concepts at an elite level.”

Jack Morgan, Cooper Friese, Sam Riggs, Connor Gould, Kaleb Mayfield, Lachlan Davies and Harry Kirkwood represented Mackay well at the recent State

Selection Trials with Mayfield selected for the Queensland number one team. Riggs, Davies and Kirkwood were selected for the second team.

These four players will head to Bathurst in NSW for the U15 National Titles during the April school holidays.

Jordan Bliss, Claire Colwill, Demi Walker, Jamie-Lee Surha, Patrick Sheedy and Matthew Miles represented the U18s at the State Selection Trials with Bliss, Colwill, Walker and Sheedy all selected to compete at the U18 National Titles in Launceston during the same period.

U16 talent identification camps were also held in late February with Tomas Burgess, Haiden Mellifont, Jack Kearines, Chloe McLeod, Julia Monckton, Anika Gall, and Hayley Elston.

Belbin said the feedback from the Australian hockey ranks is that Mackay players are in pretty good shape and a lot of improvement has been observed.

Finals star: ‘Just give it a go!’

WALKERSTON’S victory over Brothers capped off a sterling season for rising team star Jakob Frerichs.

Jakob, 24, began playing cricket when he was a lad.

“I started playing in Charters Towers then moved to Mackay when I was about 12 years

old and I have been playing through the Mackay cricket association ever since,” he told the Mackay Local News.

“I even started my junior season in Walkerston but they didn’t have a team the following year, so I went to a couple of other clubs then played all my senior cricket with Walkerston.”

Walkerston defeated Brothers by three wickets in last weekend’s grand final, Walkerston 7/172, Brothers 8/171, and Jakob credits the win, in part, to his team’s supportive culture.

“I think the way we get behind each other and support each other, even if someone is not having a good game we’ll all get together and support each

other,” he said. His message for the young cricket and sports stars of tomorrow is to find the sport that is right for you.

“Just give it a go don’t be afraid to try other sports and find out which is best for you,” he said.
