Man attacks ex-flatmate in bed, narrowly avoids jail

A 39-YEAR-old Victoria Plains man has narrowly avoided further jail for breaking into a house with an accomplice and repeatedly punching his former housemate in his bed.

Shane Edward Orby was charged with burglary in company and assaulting his former housemate on June 4, 2020.

The Mackay District Court was told Orby caused two fractures to his victim’s nose while he was wearing a disguise over his face and his juvenile accomplice kept the bedroom door closed to stop people

coming in - until the victim lifted the disguise and he was recognised.

The Police Prosecutor said Orby had a string of prior assault charges in Queensland, in New South Wales and three from the Australian Federal Police with resulting prison sentences.

Orby appeared via video link from Maryborough Prison, where he publicly apologised to his partner, who called out from the back of the District Court that she forgave him.

Orby’s counsel told Judge Deardon that his client had been struggling to overcome alcoholism and an ice addiction. He had

started life with a violent alcoholic father and following his parents’ divorce, spent his childhood in a hotel bar with his mother.

However Judge Deardon took into account that Orby had been in custody for 10 months and he will be released on 20 months of parole on July 6.

Judge Deardon explained that Orby would be regularly tested for drugs and would be returned to jail if there was a positive result.

“You also have numerous tickets to work machinery like cranes and backhoes and you would have no difficulty getting a job.”

Refused bail

A WOMAN who met a man on an internet dating site, and then allegedly went to his house and stole his keys and his car has been refused bail and remanded in custody after appearing in Mackay Magistrates Court. The woman, 35, is alleged to have fled from Bundaberg and is charged with stealing, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, driving an uninsured car, obstructing police, and failing to take reasonable care of drug utensils and hypodermic syringes. The court was told the defendant did not have anywhere to live in Mackay.

Phone theft POLICE bodycam footage shown to Mackay Magistrate’s Court showed a 38-year-old Blacks Beach man trying to roll onto the floor and sit on the police officer who arrested him.

The man, who cannot be named to prevent identification of his children, was charged with Obstructing Police after the incident. The court heard the man was arrested on two occasions on September 23 and 24, 2020 and faced charges of stealing a Samsung Galaxy S mobile phone from his two primary school aged children’s school bag on January 10.

Assault charge

The Mackay Magistrates Court has remanded a 31-year-old Gladstone man in custody for contravention of a Domestic Violence Order, aggravated assault of a police officer, assault causing grievous bodily harm, common assault, obstructing police, breach of bail, plus entering a property with criminal intent. The man will be held in custody until his trial later this month.

Insurance control hint

By JOHN BELL THE Morrison Government has hinted at introducing new initiatives to control and regulate North Queenslanders home insurance costs.

The surprise and dramatic announcement by Assistant Federal Treasurer, Michael Sukkar has been prompted by a new insurance competitor, Sure Insurance, offering a 70 percent cut to North Queensland’s home insurance rates.

The Assistant Treasurer’s sudden announcement was also promoted by claims made to The Mackay Local News by Federal Opposition Insurance spokesman Matt Thistlethwaite, that Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s new $10 billion home reinsurance pool would only create a 10 percent cut in home insurance charges.

“The Government will explore ways to ensure that reinsurance savings get passed onto consumers as part of the final design,” Mr Sukkar declared.

“Options include tasking the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) with monitoring home insurance prices

to ensure that the savings from the reinsurance pool are making it into insurance premiums.

“This includes altering existing disclosure regimes to more clearly show consumers, what portion of their insurance costs are being driven by reinsurance costs.

“The Federal Government’s reinsurance pool for cyclone and flood damage will cover North Queensland home owners from July 1, 2022,” Mr Sukkar added.

The claims of a just 10 percent cut in future North Queensland home insurance rates made by Mr Thistlethwaite have also been hotly disputed by Dawson MP George Christensen.

He was a key figure in creating the Federal Government’s new initiative to cut North Queenslander’s home insurance rates.

“No one figure can be given at the date, but predictions are for a 50 percent cut in insurance premiums,” Mr Christensen said.

But both the Federal Government and the Federal Labor Opposition have come out in support of Sure Insurance’s 70 percent cut in North Queensland home insurance rates. Mr Thistlethwaite, said

that “it’s great to see some competition in the North Queensland home insurance market.

“I hope that this new player can shake-up home insurance and get cheaper premiums for long suffering residents in North Queensland.

“But Sure’s 70 percent home insurance discount is based on a new business mode.

“Its strength is that every property insured by Sure has an onsite inspection, whereas other insurance companies just do home insurance quotations over the phone.

“I hope that Sure will offer home insurance to all customers in North Queensland and not just insure low risk houses, plus Sure will have to payout if there is a cyclone or a flood.

“The Labor Party also wants to make sure there are incentives in reassurance to ensure better building standards and better building codes to protect homes.”

Mr Christensen added that Sure Insurance’s 70 percent discount is based on a very special model in North Queensland that other Australian insurance companies haven’t followe.

Locals fill State coffers MINING royalties and taxes from the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday regions have paid for a large slice of the Queensland Government’s budget.

Queensland Resources Council (QRC) chief executive Ian Macfarlane said Queensland’s $82.6 billion resources industry provided $4.5 billion to the state government in royalties and taxes.

“Queensland mining has also supported jobs for 420,000 people across the state and these job opportunities will continue to increase over the next 12 months,” Mr Macfarlane said.

“This is something we’re very proud of, and we hope the people of Queensland are too.”

Mr Macfarlane said total state mineral royalties are forecast to grow by 61 percent over forward estimates, which is great news for the resources sector and the state economy.

“This strong growth is most pronounced for Queensland top exports, coal and LNG,” he said.

“The numbers speak for themselves in Queensland’s budget papers, as we see economic growth recovering and workforce participation and job creation continuing, largely due to the resources sector’s enormous contribution to

this state.

“Strengthening export prices across a range of key resource commodities – from coal to aluminium and zinc, and everything in between – is more good news because any revenue growth which automatically increases the amount of royalties paid by resources companies directly to the government.”

“On top of that, across the forward estimates to 2024-25, Queensland Treasury has projected petroleum royalties will increase by 110 percent and coal royalties by 69 percent.

“Key prices for Queensland metals prices have also recovered to above pre-pandemic levels, with mineral royalties projected to remain steady over the forward estimates.”

Mr Macfarlane said future growth in Queensland’s resources sector will include blue-sky opportunities from the rapid growth of renewable energy combined with the steady demand for Queensland’s traditional energy exports like gas and coal.

He said it was essential for the Queensland Resources Industry Development Plan, is in its community consultation phase, to focus on growth opportunities for the sector.

Mackay a heartbreaker THE latest data from the Heart Foundation targets Mackay as a Queensland’s unhealthy heart hot spot, with a mortality rate of 76 per 100,000 people.

This statistic is 16 percent higher than the national average of 66 per 1000,000 people, with Mackay ranked higher for several heart disease risk factors.

Heart Foundation Queensland heart health manager and associate professor Anna Lewis said high rates of heart disease deaths, hospitalisations and risk factors were found in disadvantaged regional Queensland groups.

She said heart health can be influenced by factors such as educa-

tion, employment, adequate housing and access to health services, decent food and exercise.

“There are usually no obvious signs or symptoms that you have it, but it increases your risks of heart attack and stroke,” she said.

“It can also lead to developing heart disease and other chronic illnesses like type two diabetes.”

The data shows 23 percent of Mackay residents have high blood pressure, while 72 percent are physically inactive. Eighteen 18 percent smoke and 37 percent are obese.

The data revealed heart-related hospital admissions is 59 per 10,000 people, which is significantly higher than the national average of 43 per 10,000.

One indicator for poor heart health is high cholesterol, which is described as a silent killer among Queenslanders and can increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke.

A risk of high cholesterol and poor heart health can be lowered by swapping saturated fats for healthier fats like nuts and plantbased oils.

“Foods fortified with plant sterols, like some breakfast cereals, can also assist in lowering cholesterol levels,” Ms Lewis said.

“For people with high cholesterol or heart disease, we recommend choosing reduced-fat milk, yoghurt and cheese and eating fewer than seven eggs per week.

“It’s also important for heart health to quit smoking, limit alcohol intake and maintain a healthybody weight.

“Get the heart pumping by being active at least 30 minutes most days as it can help control your cholesterol levels.”

Mackay residents aged 45 or over were urged to talk to a General Practitioner (GP) about their heart health, while indigenous Australians aged over 30 should see their GP.

Loss of licence AN UNLUCKY 22-yearold beauty therapist has lost her licence and been fined for driving while just over the legal alcohol limit in what was a classic case of ‘the morning after the night before’.

Elise Maree Crawford had a blood alcohol reading of 0.057, shortly after 8am after drinking in a hotel on the previous evening.

Miss Crawford pleaded guilty and told the court that she had slept for six hours and believed that her blood alcohol level was not over the legal limit when she made the decision to drive.

Magistrate Bronwyn Hartigan said it was good that Elise Crawford had been proactive and purchased a blood alcohol breathaliser.

“I take into account your low alcohol reading, which may not have affected your driving judgement and I impose a lesser penalty of $300 and suspend your licence for one month,” Magistrate Hartigan said.

Miss Crawford was stopped for speeding when driving from Middlemount to Dalby on the Capricorn Highway.

Keswick visit CONDAMINE MP Pat Weir visited Keswick Island, but was concerned about its condition.

“The residents have continued to raise those issues. The (State) minister (for Natural Resources) basically assured that everything is going swimmingly and all concerns are being addressed,” Mr Weir said. “That is not what we have heard today. There is a breach of agreements, there are long delays – there’s not a satisfactory by any stretch of the imagination.” Mr Weir said there was allegations of environmental breaches on the island “that have not been fully investigated or addressed”.

Council rate increase

MACKAY homeowners owners will soon experience a rate increase of 1.5 percent.

This week’s Mackay Regional Council budget meeting revealed the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 1.7 percent in March.

The CPI) is a measure that examines the weighted average of prices of a basket of consumer goods and services, such as transportation, food, and medical care.

Mayor Greg Williamson (pictured) said options considered were to either cut services or “we can acknowledge the fact that the cost of those services (have) gone up by 1.7 percent in Queensland.

“We can drive some efficiencies and what we’ve done now is put our rates up by 1.5 percent to recover the costs,” Mayor Williamson said “That’s about 43 odd cents a week for the average residential ratepayer in the district.

“The residential rate is $2900.

We believe at $57 a week, that’s a pretty good rate to be able to pay for the services we deliver.”

He explained that their services go up “like any normal household budget”, adding that 80 percent of the council budget was taken up by normal services like roads maintenance.

“We need to recover that for the operation of the council. We don’t make a profit out of operating the council,” he said.

“All we can do is add up what it costs to deliver water, sewerage,

“We add that up and we divide that cost as, what we call a general rate, into the 52,000 rateable properties that we have in our region.”

At the meeting, Council revealed the good news they have a healthy cash balance of $122 million and were able to reduce their debt.

“Our capital works program is about $109 million for this year, and we’re going to build some significant structures in the Mackay Region in terms of capital works,” the Mayor said.

He said that $24 million of “new capital, in terms of the new assets and the rest of it is on renewing our new assets or making

our current assets a little bit better”.

“Major programs that we’re going to deliver right (include) increasing our funding to things like the mountain bike track, Northern Beaches Community Hub, putting money into the Priority Development Access (PDA),” he said.

“We’re actually going to start work on the riverfront of the PDA of this financial budget.

“It’s quite exciting.”

The Animal Management Pound at Mount Basset will also be finished.

“About $2.5 million will see the completion of that, which will deliver us one of the best animal management facilities on the eastern seaboard,” the Mayor said.

Volunteers make big difference

WHILE volunteering can make a difference and lead to new skills, a Mackay local said he loves meeting new people.

St Vincent De Paul Society Mackay regional president Frank Gilbert said it was the people he meets which really inspires him. But he also learns a lot about himself as well.

His 30-plus years of volunteering have made him realise that “everyone has something to offer”.

Mr Gilbert (pictured left) said that last Monday they had 15 volunteers help distribute groceries to some of Mackay’s most vulnerable residents.

He said the Family Support Centre is open Monday, Thursday and Friday from 9am to 11.30am.

“We give them grocery cards, groceries, sometimes we provide them a fuel voucher, we pay their pharmaceutical things,” Mr Gilbert said.

“We also have people who go out … to deliver some groceries.”

Currently, the society is looking for more volunteers to continue to help make a difference to Mackay’s homeless or at risk people.

“As a voluntary organisation, we depend on volunteers. When you have volunteers, you can’t necessarily expect them to work regular hours,” Mr Gilbert said.

“Some of our people are retired, so they go away for part of the year. It’s a hard thing to manage.

“So the more volunteers the more successful we can be, but I don’t think people quite realise the extent of what we do in Mackay.”

He said the many op shops and warehouses they run in Mackay help generate their income.

“We’re always looking for volunteers to work in the store and at the warehouse,” he said.

“We got two stores actually – by people donating goods to us, clothing and so on … by selling that, some of which we do give away, that generates income to support our other activities.”

Jail averted

“If there is one clear thing from your offending, it’s related to your drug and alcohol use and that’s what you need to deal with and that’s what you need to be open and honest with yourself and your parole officer about, and your going to need to work on.

“You’re approaching 40 now and your already starting to be one of the older blokes in prison.

“If you want to spend a significant part of your life in prison and be like the old lags; don’t change. If you want to be a bloke who uses your skills which are obvious and you seem to have no problem getting a job.

“You obviously have a range of skills to get jobs and you prepared to work regionally, so blokes like you who are prepared to go and do road building, can be very easy to employ.

“But you’re only going to do that if you stay off the grog and stay off the drugs and stop committing criminal offences.

“In all the circumstances, although I do consider these as serious offences, I’m prepared to reduce the penalty as little from what I was initially going to do.

“You’re convicted and sentenced to two and half years. But I declare the period between 23 August 2020 and 21 June 2021, or a total of 303 days, as time served and I set a parole release date of today.”

Mackay and District Pipe Band event coordinator Deb Orr is excited about this anniversary.

The yearly celebrations are well-loved by the Mackay Community, and thousands of residents always show up.

This year’s celebrations will run from July 9 to 10 at the Bluewater Quay.

“We started our free outdoor events five years ago – last year we had to cancel. We hold it at the Bluewater Quay … we invite other bands from around Queensland to come and join us,” Deb said.

“We’ve expanded the event this year … we’re having a meet and greet (on Friday) – these are all free events that are open to the public.

“The main event is on the Saturday afternoon, at the Bluewater Quay on June 10 – we start the event with the march across the Forgan Bridge into the Bluewater Quay.”

Ms Orr said Mackay Regional Council Mayor Greg Williamson is a big fan of the pipe band, and he is expected to be displaying his Scottish heritage in his Scottish gear!

“He’s going to be dressed in his kilt and going to do the welcome, as we will be having a lot of visitors,” she said.

“The band has contributed

The event will also help promote Mackay as tourism destination and Ms Orr said the Sugar City has a growing reputation as a place to visit.

“Mackay Regional Council is our main sponsor. Iit’s not just a pipe band event – it’s also a destination Mackay event. We’re growing the event so people put it on their calendar and know ‘at this time in July, is the time to come to Mackay’,” she said. “It has grown – it’s grown quite well.”

When I was 12 years old my family decided to move the family from the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney and drive the trusty Kingswood up the Bruce Highway Goat Track and make Mackay home.

That was 1981. 40 years ago.

Let me say this, it was the best decision ever made for so many reasons.

I’ll tell you why. I have made more friends here than I would ever make in that big overcrowded city.

I’ve still got mates that I met on my first day at Mackay State High School.

We may not catch up everyday, but when we do it’s like it was 1981 again.

It takes just 5 minutes to travel just about anywhere, not the hours it would take you down south just to head to the shops.

Everyone is friendly, and we do anything for anybody.

all come running. When my Mum passed away a month ago the love shown to myself and my family was just beautiful.

The flowers, the phone calls, dinners, messages and compassion were so good for the soul.

And just like this paper, Mackay Local News, we help the community every single day. I do it through my 4MK radio breakfast show and when I’m out in the community all the time.

This month we raised nearly $11K for the Mackay Hospital Foundation with Rob’s Rescue when I walked 426km around the streets of the Mackay region.

The generosity was just mind blowing. It’s just a reminder why we all love living here.

If you see me out and about in the Mackay community say hi. Let’s help those around you and perhaps even make them smile.

Oh and if you want to really smile, come and watch me play hockey on Saturday. You won’t be able to stop laughing.

Who am I, what am I doing here and what would I know about fashion you may ask?

Well, I am Delton Clark and as the title of my column suggests (if you can read French without Google Translate) I have gone “From men’s to women’s”, and we aren’t just talking about the clothes that I wear.

But more on that another time.

I am here to give you all my sometimes funny, sometimes bitter yet all-in-all irreverent opinion surrounding fashion in our community. I’ll be talking about how fashion applies to everyone – yes even you 60-year-old straight males skimming through this column.

I’ll also be getting out and about and up close and personal with some of our local boutiques, event holders and designers; to give you a little bit of an insight on what’s happening behind the scenes while you’re doing whatever it is you do.

Let’s now rewind to me growing up as a little ‘“Millennial” boy on the edge of the destruction of human morals and sophisticated style – a.k.a the arrival of Generation Z. It’s fair to say I’ve seen my fair share of hits

The earliest fantasy I can recall was watching Julia Roberts go from nada to Prada in Pretty Woman. All I had to do was stand on the street looking like I had just woken up out of bed and some man was going to pick me up and buy me nice clothes, right? – I was also only 10 years old.

So what about between the time of my dirty little secret of subconsciously wanting to be a hooker to getting a Louis Vuitton bag and live in the Beverley Wilshire and becoming the fabulous, independent indigenous woman today?

Well, I slowly but surely had to transition from modelling men’s fashion in various cata-

logues, magazines and on the runway at Loreal Melbourne Fashion Festival 2010 to making sure I picked the right type of ‘A’ line skirt to give my body some sort of allure as opposed to resembling a javelin.

I’ve witnessed births, deaths and resurgences of trends and styles; as of late we are seeing the resurgence of 90s punk or grunge but better and in a non-apologetic way full of expression, execution and homage paid to the piece of neonoir cinematic art we call Pulp Fiction.

THE Collins dictionary definition of a sexpert is “a person who professes a knowledge of sexual matters”.

Our foresisters didn’t burn their bras for females to be left behind in the masturbation stakes and we could all use a little more empowerment – it is your right as a woman to orgasm and shouldn’t purely be a male orientated goal when engaging in sex.

Barnaby is back.

Australia’s greatest retail politician is once again leader of the National Party and the D eputy Prime Minister.

Barnaby replaces immediate past leader of the Nationals Michael McCormack, who has supported our region with significant delivery on projects such as the Mackay Port Access Road, the Mackay Aquatic and Recreation Centre, the rebuild of the Proserpine Entertainment Centre and the Great Barrier Reef cricket Arena to name a few.

Barnaby is the real deal. What you see is what you get, warts and all.

It was shocking that his marriage breakdown was used by the former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull to oust him from the deputy prime ministership, and so his re-election to the position rights an historic wrong.

But the return of Barnaby Joyce isn’t about Barnaby; it’s about the regions and ensuring that the Nationals, who are the champions for the regions, have the strongest voice possible within government.

Barnaby Joyce has been a huge supporter of our region and its key industries, including sugar and coal.

Barnaby listened to the concerns of growers and helped me with the push to establish a sugar marketing code of conduct to protect them from the actions of foreign millers.

Barnaby has been an ardent opponent of crazy green-inspired policy ideas that would destroy coal jobs or the construction of dams.

Barnaby has already informed me that there is no deal with the Nationals to meet a target of net zero emissions by 2050.

I oppose any such policy because net zero emissions will mean net zero jobs for our region.

It will destroy local jobs, hurt our farmers, hinder the growth of manufacturing and other industries, derail the construction of coal-fired power stations, lead to higher electricity prices or a carbon tax or emissions trading scheme.

Further to that, a path to net zero is not possible unless we cross our finders and hope for fusion power or the life to become a reality.

As we look to the future, we want to ensure that farmers get a fair deal, that coal mining isn’t demonised and that coal miners keep their jobs. We want to ensure that there is equity in the provision of services and infrastructure for regions like Mackay and the Whitsundays.

To get that, we need a loud voice, dogged determination and the ability to put the fear of God into the opponents of investing in regional Australia.

Barnaby being back may make politics interesting, but it will ensure the regions are front and centre in the serious fights that lie ahead.

DESPITE genuine efforts from local organisations, landholders and environmentalists, there is sad news that our very own Wonder of the World, and critical cog of our local economy is poised to be dealt a blow due to the incompetence and sheer indifference of the current state and federal governments.

Climate change is the biggest threat to our Great Barrier Reef. This means it is the biggest threat to the Reef’s contribution to jobs, the economy and to the outstanding universal values that it holds and gives to not only Queenslanders but to billions around the world (those for which we are already custodians on behalf of - and of course,

including future generations). We will hear the usual spin, platitudes, and now even conspiracy theories. But nothing can hide or deny the fact that since the Great Barrier Reef’s World Heritage status was questioned by Unesco whether it should be listed as “in danger” in 2017 and the federal government’s own 2019 GBR Outlook Report warned (and which is a factor in Unesco’s current decision), our so-called leaders charged with protecting the Reef have only dug deeper.

They have doubled down in their mad pandering to the climate wrecking fossil fuel cabal that they seem to be forever beholden to.

This news comes just a day after our local MP’s coal-loving, climate denying mate made a zombie-like comeback to the second highest office in the land in order to further sabotage the Morrison government’s already pathetic climate commitments. And only a week after Premier Palaszczuk’s gas-lighting rant in the parliament about the importance* of gas, and announcing in

her budget to throw good taxpayer money after bad in propping up and patching up dying fossil fuel plants. And this is with little new money for renewables and no actual plan for workers (lots of workers in our region) to transition to the economy of the future.

We have lost more than a decade already to this craziness of inaction. Rates to rise TAKE a deep breath, Mackay region.

Your rates are going to be little steeper again this coming fiscal year.

It’s to be expected though, and it has to be noted that the 1.5% increase – expected to be instituted across the board – is still less than the current rate of inflation (1.7%) and less still than what inflation could or even should be, depending on which analyst you listen to.

In many regards, though, this is what is likely to overshadow the Mackay Regional Council’s return to surplus in 2021-22, for most rate payers.

But we cannot afford to be flippant about that. To be in surplus, even despite the horror 2020 Year of COVIID-19, is kind of a big deal. And it puts us ahead of a lot of councils – especially when we are still shrugging off the last of the resource slump incumbency and there is an inherent (and not altogether misplaced) apprehension around China and other world markets.

Look, rates are going to go up. And, not for a moment am I saying we should not question that.

Show us your tatts I got this tattoo in Brisbane but it has to be one of my favorites. I have always been a big fan of Pokemon I got this from Immerse when he was at Royal ink Brisbane.

Indeed, as a ratepayer myself, of course I am a bit miffed that the bit of extra coin which might have been directed to the mortgage (or a nice pair of shoes) is now earmarked for council coffers.

But let’s look at the bigger picture. Mackay regional rates have been a touch on the high side for some time now and for that, we ratepayers can take some of the credit for the council being back in surplus. Being in surplus means we have stronger leverage when attracting major funding and projects.

He really is a fantastic artist he really gave my Electabuzz on my leg some summer character and really played with bright and fun colours which really makes it pop.

It follows the same principle as your household finances being in a good state. The more we can fund locally, the better the chance of matching that local funding with state and federal contributions.

And, given the attention levelled at the recently handed down state budget – where almost everything allocated to this region had been preapproved and on the books for (in some cases) years – that is a leverage point we need to develop and then better utilise.

No-one likes it when rates go up. That is the single fact. Every other bit of debate around the issue, whether we like it or not, is subjective.

It’s an easy whinge to have about rates being too high, but take away what those rates are funding; remove or scale back on the services delivered as a result of our rates being cut, and then listen to the whinge!

We have voted in and out councils based on their decision making, and rates are always one of the platforms in the mix.

Rate cuts are really easy to campaign around. Until those campaigners are elected. And until, from the “inside”, the realities of local government – and the delivery of regional local services - become apparent.

I’M NOT in a serious mood this week. Occasionally we need a break from the never-ending trials and tribulations of life so I’ve decided to plagiarise an email I received a few years ago.

I have suffered minor bouts of insomnia, apprehension, and apathy, and uncontrollable fits of laughter, after following every pre-budget, budget, and post-budget announcement by our brilliant economic contortionist, State Treasurer Tricky Dicky.

Next week I may be tempted to write a belated and somewhat “different” budget review, but today I pose a question that, for some of you, may appear to come out of left field. It is, however, quite topical given recent events involving law-and-order issues throughout the world.

The question is: How do you tell the difference between Australian, Canadian, American, and Scottish Police Officers?

WHAT DO YOU DO? You’re a police officer, on duty by yourself. You are walking on a deserted street late at night. Suddenly, a man armed with a huge knife comes around the corner, locks eyes with you and, screaming obscenities, raises the knife and lunges at you.

You are carrying your police baton and/or taser (depending on your country) and are an ex-pert in using it. However, you have only a split second to react before he reaches you. What do you do?

ANSWERS: Australian Police Officer: Firstly, the officer must consider the man’s human rights.

1. Does the man look underprivileged and/or oppressed?

2. Is he newly arrived in this country and does not yet understand the law?

3. Is this really a knife or a ceremonial dagger?

4. Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack?

5. Am I dressed provocatively?

6. Could I run away?

7. Could I possibly swing my baton/fire my taser and knock the knife out of his hand?

8. Should I try and negotiate with him to discuss his wrong-doings?

9. Why am I carrying a baton/taser anyway and what kind of message does this send to society?

10. Does he definitely want to kill me or would he be content just to wound me?

11. If I were to grab his knees and hold on, would he still want to stab and kill me?

Just reading that old joke again makes me feel better. I’ve shrugged off the budget BS blues for a little while at least.

4CRM 107.5 FM, community radio Mackay, is fortunate to have some very talented and experienced personalities at its helm. Today we hear from one of the biggest personalities, none other than our President, Dr Bill Boyd.

1. How did you come to be involved with 4CRM? I listened avidly to radio as a teen when it was Radio Luxembourg under the pillow. Still got that tranny. From the beginning I thought Community Radio Mackay was a great idea.

2. How long have you been at 4CRM? Over 20 years.

3. Do you have a title? I’ve had the privilege of being President of 4CRM for years.

4. What’s the name of your show and what type of music do you play on it? I present Scotch on the Rocks, 7 till 8 pm Thursdays with Scottish, Irish and Celtic music in general. I’ve just started presenting the Friday morning request show 9 ‘til 12.

5. Who’s your favourite musician? Wow, so many but possibly my brother John in Scotland on guitar but also the Corries. Google the Wild Mountain Thyme.

6. Do you play an instrument? No. One regret is I never learned the pipes. Probably nobody else regrets my omission.

7. Favourite band ten years ago? Always the Beatles; never tired of their music after half a century.

8. Who is your role model and why? The Dalai Lama espouses decency and honesty, harmony, consideration for others, non-violence and selflessness - all of which are in short supply in our world.

9. The one thing we would not hear you say is? I am bored. I find a few things to be boring so I quickly move to something else.

10. When have you been most satisfied in your life? Being able to fix someone’s health problem is a wonderful experience but sitting down of an evening with Julie for a quiet shiraz before dinner is hard to beat.

11. If you could have dinner with anyone in the world who would you choose and why? Apart from family and friends I’d love to have had dinner with the celebrated Scottish poet Robert Burns.

12. What do you like best about 4CRM? 4CRM brings the simple pleasure of listening to a wide range of largely musical content to our community, announced by all ages, abilities and ethnicities of Presenters. It offers shy people an opportunity to expand their world.

Papavasiliou Life most fabulous BUSY. It’s like a modern-day scourge on our lifestyle; and I used to find myself saying it – A LOT!!!

How often do you find yourself in conversation with friends / family / colleagues and what starts as a genuine enquiry into how you’re all going suddenly degenerates into a spiralling race to the bottom, punctuated by words like chaos, madness, a whirl, batsh*t crazy and, you know, just soooooooo busy!

I have really tried to stop myself from using that word – with various (and sometimes not so great) measures of success.

Think about it! It’s such a default thing to say, and it is just so lazy in the conversational sense! Which is kinda funny, when the word is supposed to mean the opposite.

It also drives me to drink!

Never EVER am I too busy for that!

Oh, but wait there. I am.

We spend so much time working, running around after kids, trying to catch up with friends and family, feeling guilty for not catching up with said friends and family enough, and then trying desperately to wedge in the stuff that life demands we do – like the housework, the mowing, the washing and cooking. hree weekends in a row I bought cream to make scones. Three Wednesdays in a row I threw the cream out because it had expired and I was left dejected and muttering hurtful comments to myself about not having cooked the scones – AND I had wasted the cream!

My drier works night shift.

My computer is never off.

I plan. I replan. I plan for contingency.

I then scrap the plan.

BUSY BUSY: Could be worse, we could live in a big city ing a member of the 5am club or knowing how to lose friends and infuriate people (although that last one I have somehow mastered in various degrees over the years), but the only way I am going to un-busy my life is to do me and do it well.

My 16-almost-17-year-old son and I discussed the possibility of getting up and 5am to go to the gym together.

And then we laughed. Hard.

I find I am at my most ‘busy’ and least productive when I am trying to fulfill the expectations of others.

For me – and for us as a family – knowing what we are not has been just as important as knowing what we are.

We are not morning people. We are not overly social. We are not super organised and we are absolutely not perfect. There is almost nothing that could motivate me to get to a gym at stupid-o’clock in the morning and we have found that being just in time for school actually means missing most of the awful traffic (we live in the Northern Beaches; enough said??).

Soft Plastics Many major supermarkets have a green bin at the front where you can return your soft plastics.

Sometimes I’ve had to ask where it is as it’s in a corner.

We use a soft plastic bag to put all of these in and this lives next to our landfill and recycling bins under the sink. Soft plastics include the kind of plastic around crackers, biscuits, over fruit and veg. We put that bag of soft plastics in our car, then the next time we shop, drop the whole thing into the green bin.

Compost Get ready to reduce your refuse tremendously. We could talk all day about the variety of options for composting. Visit your local hardware or garden retailer to investigate different compost bins or worm farms.

This can easily be set up for your own garden if you live in a house. If you are in a unit, begin the conversation with your neighbours to explore solutions for your building.

What goes into compost? All fruit and vegetable peelings, egg shells, and even some paper towel will decompose in compost. We store our compost in our freezer until we take it to the Whitsunday Organic Garden which has a compost bin for the community.

Jacobsen Zero Waste Whitsundays Zero Waste tip that makes the most sense in the world it is this one. Yes, it takes some up front effort, but it won’t take long to get into a routine.

Cans, Bottles and Single Use Plastic Drink Bottles How fantastic that Queensland has the bottle return system. This is another excellent project to involve children. Collect throughout the week and return for 10 cents each to Anything Environmental in Jubilee Pocket behind the Tavern or your local collector.

If you are doing some or all of the household waste solutions above, it’s jarring how tiny the landfill section of your rubbish becomes literally overnight.

Other ideas *We collect all glass jars

from jam, mayo, vegemite and clean them. They go in a box and when we visit the local markets, it’s pretty straightforward to find someone who makes preserves who is thrilled to reuse them.

Rest assured every one of these actions moves the needle in the direction of a zero waste community.

As the largest buyer and seller of estate gold and silvery jewellery in Australia, Richard is hoping to replenish his stock.

“We buy and sell unique coins, jewellery, stamps banknotes – we sell unique jewellery, so to sell it, we need to buy it so we can replenish,” Mr Macdonald said.

Mr Macdonald (pictured) said he has run out of gold chains, rings and coins including pre-decimal silver, and would love to buy more, so he can sell more.

“We buy, but we also offer free appraisals as well for people wanting to know what something is worth,” he said.

Mr Macdonald will offer appraisals for jewellery, watches, all coins and banknotes, along with stamps, medals and military items.

He said recycling is close to his heart and all items sold to him, whether it’s broken or not, are lovingly restored and then reappear ‘born new’ for a new owner to love and cherish. His shop is always looking for more broken gold, in all colours, whether it is yellow, white or rose gold.

“There is not a single piece of gold we refuse to buy, including old gold nuggets, old wedding and dress rings, single earrings, broken chains and yes, yucky but true, even old gold teeth and fillings,” he said. “And we are pay-

ing top dollars to get it.”

They buy all of these in any condition, even small tins of coins.

“A very old lady brought in a medium size tin of coins, found after her husband died,” he said.

“Among the mix of pennies, pre-decimal silver and common coins, I found a gold half-sovereign. She literally cried when we told her the tin’s value was $400”.

“She had no idea it was even there. It was a wonderful moment to be able to help this lovely lady find some undiscovered wealth.”

REIQ welcomes spending, calls for more THE Real Estate Institute of Queensland has welcomed increased social housing and infrastructure spending in the 2021-22 Queensland Budget.

But it has given a thumbs down to a lack of government progress on reforms to the first home buyer grant and stamp duty.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella welcomed the announcement of a $1 billion Housing Investment Fund to drive new housing supply and $1.8 billion over four years to increase social housing supply and to upgrade the existing social housing portfolio.

LARGEST INVESTMENT “We welcome what is believed to the be the largest investment in social housing since World War II,” Ms Mercorella said. “The REIQ has been a strong advocate of more government investment in safe, secure and affordable housing, which is the foundation of building resilient and connected communities.

“The government has to do the heavy lifting in providing affordable housing for our most vulnerable. We welcome the large investment in putting roofs over people’s heads and the jobs that will be created during construction of this much-needed accom-

modation.”

The REIQ also welcomed the boost to infrastructure spending, with the government allocating $14.7 billion in 2021-22, with 61.2 per cent of funds to be spent outside Greater Brisbane.

POPULATION INCREASE “With Queensland’s population increasing, it’s great to see such a large amount being spent on roads, public facilities, local government projects including sewerage and water plus disaster resilience,” Ms Mercorella said.

“We’re delighted to see Queensland’s regions receive the lion’s share of this spending, particularly in light of the influx of new residents they are experiencing.”

Additionally, Ms Mercorella welcomed budget support for small businesses.

“With much of the Queensland real estate sector comprising small businesses, we welcome such announcements as the $100 million Business Investment Fund and $30 million in grants and support for small business to increase their skills and capability,” she said.

However, Ms Mercorella said she was disappointed the government had failed to act on two key reforms the REIQ had been

advocating for – changes to the First Home Owners’ Grant and the eventual abolition of stamp duty.

“We believe the $15,000 First Home Owners’ Grant should be extended to beyond those who are purchasing or building a new home,” she said.

“With the costs of new construction skyrocketing, giving first home buyers support to purchase existing housing (to the same current value of less than $750,000) will expose them to more affordable pricing options. The current grant significantly limits buying options and choice.”

Ms Mercorella said she was also disappointed the government had not acted on stamp duty reform as other jurisdictions have done. The REIQ has advocated a 10-year phase-out of this economically inefficient and volatile tax.

STAMP DUTY “With an estimated 340,000 property transactions foregone due to stamp duty each year, we believe its abolition would maximise housing access and choice for buyers,” she said. “The abolition of stamp duty on business sales would help to remove financial barriers and encourage more sales.”

INSURANCE First things first, what is Professional Indemnity? Unlike Public Liability, Professional Indemnity doesn’t require any injury or damage to have occurred. The ‘triggers’ for this cover are the financial impacts of mistakes (termed errors or omissions) made by when you when providing advice or services.

Now, who needs it? The long and short is any business that provides a fee for service (i.e accountants, solicitors, engineers, etc.) should have these covers. In fact, a lot of the professional organisations that these occupations operate under, and in some cases are governed by, require that you hold professional indemnity insurance.

Other instances where are may require cover are when you enter a contact for service. We’ve seen this requirement in several contracts for service, but they mostly appear with contract for mines, councils or government departments. In this instance it is important to consult with your insurance broker or provider and ascertain if the scope of the contract or services being provided extends to a professional indemnity exposure.

If you determined that you don’t need it, it is important that you negotiate the removal of this clause from the contract.

CONSTRUCTION: Builders have been reminded of licencing requirements

Reminder on contractor licences BUILDING contractors have been reminded that they must only do the type of work that their licence permits, after thousands of dollars in fines were recently issued to two licensees.

The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) has taken the action to ensure that the appropriate licence is used for the type of building work.

In one instance, an individual with a termite-management licence performed repairs and renovation work in excess of $40,000 at an Ingham property. Some of

the work was found to be defective. A court fined the man $6,500 and ordered him to pay $11,000 in restitution to the owners of the property.

The man was charged with two counts of carrying out, or undertaking to carry out, unlicensed contracting (he did not have an appropriate licence).

Meanwhile, a Brisbane-based building company has been penalised more than $13,000 for constructing patios in southeast Queensland and northern NSW without the appropriate licence.

The company performed the

work despite a warning from the QBCC that it did not have the required class of licence for that type of work.

QBCC Commissioner, Brett Bassett, said building work must only ever be performed with the appropriate licence, to ensure that a licensee was sufficiently qualified and experienced to do the work required.

“This way, home owners are protected from potentially defective work and a level playing field is maintained for contractors who hold the appropriate licence for the work,” Mr Bassett said.

WHEN you think about local Mackay sporting greats, it’s hard to go past the irrepressible Garth Purvis, You’d not pick him for 71 – especially when he outruns some of his contemporaries on the touch footy field.

But while the look of him belies his age, his experience and view on life certainly does not.

Garth has been a life member and foundation member of the Magpies Touch Football Club for many years and shows no sign (or intention) of slowing down or stopping1any time soon.

JC: So, how long have you been playing touch football, Garth?

GP: Well, I use to play rugby league when I was younger. I was in the U16s for the Magpies here in Mackay. It was about 1973-74 that we found out that touch was starting up here, and we use to play a bit of touch football while we were practicing before our rugby league matches.

LEARNING: CANEGROWERS ran two Pricing Essential courses recently which were well received by participants

New training course helps sugar growers’ profits KEVIN

A NEW training course is helping sugar growers make profits.

A sign of the sophistication of the Australian sugar industry, compared with others all over the world, is that cane growers in Australia are uniquely able to forward price their own sugar.

That means they have greater control over the price they are paid for their cane by being able to capture attractive sugar prices when these occur during world market rallies.

To know what price they need to lock in on the market, growers must of course

understand their costs of production and therefore what return they need to cover those costs and give themselves a profit.

They also need to understand what level of risk they are prepared to wear. Do they lock in a price today for all their crop when they know that they have secured the return they need to cover costs? Or do they apportion a bit of it and risk waiting a while longer to see if the price goes even higher? (And at the same time risk it going lower!)

Cane growers are not only able to forward price on the futures market but also have a choice about which company they want to market their sugar with. They can choose from either their own milling company’s marketing service (i.e. Queensland Commodity Services for Mackay Sugar growers or Wilmar for Plane Creek growers) or Queensland Sugar Limited (QSL),

a member-owned service organization and Australia’s largest sugar marketer. Or they can apportion their sugar between the two.

To assist growers to capitalise on the benefits of these choices, CANEGROWERS has developed an independent Marketing Information Service providing the latest news about price movements in the international sugar market and the reasons behind these movements (where these can be ascertained).

To provide practical education on the topics of sugar pricing and marketing, CANEGROWERS has also teamed up with TAFE Queensland and the Rural Jobs and Skills Alliance to create a training course called Pricing Essentials for Cane Growers.

The aim of the course is to develop growers’ skills and understanding to

make informed sugar pricing decisions.

Thorough knowledge of how the sugar market works combined with a grower’s understanding of their own farm’s cost of production creates opportunities to make much needed profits.

The first part of the course is called ‘Manage finances for new business ventures’ which assists the grower to gain an understanding of the overall financial position of their cane farming business.

This in turn helps them to determine the level of risk that is acceptable to their business. CANEGROWERS has developed a Cost of Production tool and an enhanced version is included in the course to enable participants to gain a better understanding of their business overall.

This, of course, is also very useful when it comes to conversations with the bank.

Two Pricing Essentials courses have been run to date in Mackay/Plane Creek with very positive feedback from growers on the contents and the ease of presentation. The simple, common sense approach to the topic by the presenters has allowed the participants to obtain a good level of understanding of what can be a very complex topic.

In addition, all CANEGROWERS members are able to keep well informed on marketing issues by going online at www.canegrowers.com.au to access the latest news on the sugar market from the CANEGROWERS Marketing Information Service.

CANEGROWERS will continue to remain proactive in these areas of training and education to assist growers to improve their bottom lines.

Mixed outcomes for mills

Wet weather has had mixed outcomes for Mackay region sugar mills.

Crushing was underway at Mackay Sugar’s Racecourse and Farleigh mills and Wilmar’s Plane Creek Mill last week.

Plane Creek cane supply manager Jim Kirchner said the mill started crushing on June 15, settling into the process well with very few mechanical issues.

“Widespread rain and showers in the middle of the week impacted some harvesting operations and this resulted in reduced crush rates some lengthy supply stoppages,” Mr Kirchner said.

The mill crushed 22,191 tonnes of sugar last week with an average bin weight of 3.92tonnes.

Average CCS was 11.93, with a high of 15.5 which came from a rake of Q208 in the Dawlish pro-

duction area.

Meanwhile, two of the three Mackay Sugar factories were up and running, with Marian delayed on account of poor weather, with up to 70mm of rain reported in some parts of the growing area.

Farleigh crushed 54,331.83 tonnes of cane, while Racecourse had a throughput of 27,959.80 tonnes.

It’s market time and thoughts turn to family GILLIAN

AT THIS time of year my thoughts always turn to family. June and July are busy months in my family as we take advantage of a high number of birthday celebrations to make sure we all get to spend some quality time together.

As I walk around this market this week, I can see my brother and his daughter taking in the sights, sounds and smells of the Greater Whitsundays Farmers Market for the first time. Having made the trip up from Brisbane, they’re loving the vibe and the wide variety of regional produce. Of course, our markets are always a family-affair as stallholders interact with local families and the high number of visitor families escaping from the chilly weather down south.

Each week I see Dale and his mum Flo, a down-

to-earth farm woman if ever there was one, running their Eungelladale Milk stall. A great community-minded duo, they’re always happy to have a chat.

Other glimpses of family include Alison, juggling her grandson on her hip as she sells her beautiful selection of fresh spinach, lettuce, and herbs. This week we congratulate Deb and Rob from Freckle Farm on a family milestone, their 21st wedding anniversary.

It really is such great to see our farmers market families sharing their day, and their produce, with us all.

So, what’s new in the market this week? We welcome back “The Weed Garden”. Sean Farquhar’s passion is growing produce from the Brassicae family, so make sure you say hello and check out his range of radishes and daikins.

Seasonal produce beginning to make an appearance now includes strawberries, zucchini flower and winter seedlings.

Water, lollipops, moral support THE Mackay Street Chaplaincy is a Christian group whose aim is “to ensure people stay safe while enjoying a night out”. Inspired by the Biblical parable of the Good Samaritan (see sidebar story) the Chaplaincy sets up a tent every weekend in the Mackay CBD to offer cups of water, lollipops (for energy) and kind words to partygoers who may have been partying just a little too hard. DAVID LORNIE tagged along with them last Saturday night.

IT’S A chilly night in the CBD and I’m accompaning the Mackay Street Chaplaincy as an observer on their early shift – early being a euphemism for 10pm til 1am.

I meet up with the team, which includes two new recruits – Tony and Alex, who are also designated observers for the night – just before the 10pm briefing.

SIGN IN Chaplaincy Roster and Training Co-ordinator Niki gives us a quick overview and signs us in.

Niki, regular volunteers Nathanea and Andrea, and paid Chaplain Rex put on purple jackets. We observers are given pink vests to wear – not my first choice in garment colour.

I make a lame protestation to that effect and am told that “it takes a real man to wear pink”.

On goes the vest.

We then gather in a circle for prayer and it’s time to hit the streets.

The team set up the tent and trolley laden with supplies – water, lollipops, first aid gear, tissues and a container of thongs. I discover the reason for the thongs later in the night.

It’s cold, really cold and although I’m wearing a fleecy hoodie, I can still feel the bite. The pink vest is no help.

The temperature, however doesn’t appear to bother the folk on the street who are, for the most part, dressed in short sleeves and skimpy tops.

Within a few minutes of setting up, our first customers turn up – a couple of teenage guys who ask for lollypops, then cruise away smiling.

They, like the rest of the people around us, are in a good mood.

and boys waltz past, letting out the occasional hoot. When they encounter someone they know it is with exaggerated hugs and overly sincere declarations of love.

YOUNG BOYS Three very young boys on scooters drift past, cheeky grins on their faces as they check out the scene. They should be at home in bed.

The two lollypop guys turn up again, lollies in their smiling mouths, for a chat…just passing time.

An acoustic version of Cold Chisel’s Khe Sahn wafts from the top floor of the recently opened Palace Hotel where a local singer and his guitar are entertaining the crowd.

As the song finishes and an AC/DC song begins, a gothic girl with orange hair and a large tattoo on her barely-covered chest drops by. She is accompanied by a boy who looks more sporty than goth. He’s drunk and somewhat unsteady on his feet.

“I promise, I’m not that drunk,” he says without being asked, then almost falls over.

It’s 10.15pm and time to go on patrol.

Tony, Rex, Nathanea and I walk up the street, people greeting us with smiles as we go.

“LOVE THE PINK UNIFORM, FELLAS,” chuckles a well-dressed and clearly heterosexual bloke.

We smile at him and I remind myself that it takes a real man to wear pink.

We approach Mojo where Rex has a chat with the bouncers and asks if they’d like a lollipop.

“Nah, I’ve had enough sugar tonight,” comes the friendly reply and we move on.

Walking up River Street, we are quickly overtaken by a group of rough looking teen lads, one with the most magnificent mullet I have seen in a while.

Moving forward, we walk past The Empire where the DJ is loudly pumping out a metal rap song and we encounter three bearded guys. They’ve clearly been enjoying a drink and are quite chatty.

Got any water?” they ask and Rex advises them they will find it at the tent.

“What have you got, then?

Lollypops? How am I looking?”

We leave them to compare fashion notes and move forward.

ORIGINAL GANGSTER “CHAPLAINS ARE O.G.,” comes a shout from up the road.

Original Gangster – a declaration of respect from the street.

It’s 10.40pm and we walk past Moss on Wood where we can hear Mango Junction belting out covers of various rock hits.

“Pink men,” smiles a lady as we pass.

We smile back.

By 10.50pm we’re back at the tent, feeling a bit warmer for the walk.

I watch couple of punters drinking water from plastic cups and chatting with each other as an excited young lady races over from the slowly filling kebab shop.

“Got any duct tape?” she asks.

My mind is now imagining scenarios as Rex starts looking into his bag of tricks.

“My friend broke her heel,” she explains, prompting Rex to reach for the box of thongs.

Broken heels are not an unusual occurrence, it seems, and a pair of thongs will protect the soles of the feet. But it means either an early end to the night or a taxi ride back home for a new pair of heels.

Rex hands over some safety pins which have been known to do the trick and the young lady races off to find her friend.

Three rather cold-looking girls are the next to approach and they’re after a sugar rush to help stave off the cold. Warm clothes would work just as well, but I feel this probably misses the point.

They are handed a lollipop each and walk away smiling.

FIRST VOMITER It’s not yet midnight and, across the road, we’ve sighted our first vomiter.

A young girl has her head lodged in a nearby flowerbed and she’s stoically emptying the contents of her stomach onto the flowers whilst her friends rub her back.

A Chaplaincy volunteer goes over and offers her a water which she declines, saying she’s perfectly ok. But her attempts to stand are unsuccessful so she makes a deal with the volunteer.

“If I can’t walk in a straight line I’ll drink some water,” she says.

She stands up bravely, prepares to walk the straight line and fails to even put one foot in front of her.

“OK, I made a deal,” she concedes. “Water, please.”

Her friends help her to a sitting position and water is brought.

A few sips later, she’s ready to get amongst it again.

It’s time now for another patrol and we walk up Victoria Street towards Night Owl which, by now has crowds gathering around.

Good Samaritans

READY: Partygoers lining up to get into Maguires “Outside Liquid, Rabbit Hole, Night Owl, this is Party Central,” Rex explains. “When people get sick of shouting to be heard they come outside here so they can hear what each other is saying.”

He stops his explanation to greet an acquaintance, a lone teenager.

“Doing alright, my man?” he asks.

“Yep.” Rex smiles warmly and we keep moving.

DARK AND QUIET Heading left at Night Owl we come to the bus stop which is dark and quiet. Rex explains that this is a favoured chill-out spot for those seeking temporary respite from the noise and lights.

There are two big girls sitting there, one of whom tells us she has just arrived from Melbourne, but feels colder here than she did in the Victorian capital.

“Why am I cold?” she asks.

“Got a lollypop? Yeah? Great.”

I’ve worked out by now that lollypops have magical heating superpowers.

It’s 11.15pm and we’re back near Moss on Wood. A few people fall out of a cab, one of them saying, “Good to see you guys, hey.”

We slowly make our way back

to the tent and by 11.30pm I’m feeling tired. I want to go home but I don’t want to be a quitter.

I contemplate a coffee but fear it could keep me up all night.

As I ponder this out loud, Niki tells me she no longer drinks coffee but says if I have one now it will get me across the line without keeping me up all night.

“You’ll use the energy getting out and about here, so you’ll be able to sleep,” she says.

It sounds like good advice so I make myself a coffee using the hot water thermos stashed in the tent for volunteer use.

I finish the hot drink and am enjoying the caffeine buzz when my missus rings. She’s been drinking bourbon at home and wants to talk about something that could have waited till tomorrow.

I tell her we’ll discuss it in the morning and say good night.

A sober lady (I know this to be true because she tells us) rocks up with three drunk friends (I know this to be true because they are loud and wobbly).

The sober lady looks agitated. Escorting drunkards all night whilst not drinking will do that to you.

“I’m the designated driver,” she says. “So I need a water and I am not paying for it.”

She produces her own bottle and gestures for it to be filled, then gathers up her merry band of drunks and heads off, scowling.

MIDNIGHT Midnight strikes and, as if to mark the transition into Sunday, someone drops a full beer bottle on the pavement next to the tent.

It explodes, sending glass shards and foam across the pavement.

Niki springs into action, politely asking people to move back and telling them not to help her as she cleans up the shrapnel.

Across the road a long line is forming outside the kebab shop.

A sad-looking girl, whose voluptuous figure is struggling to remain inside her skimpy dress, tells us how wonderful the Street Chaplaincy is.

“You volunteers are so amazing,” she say, “I want to do it, too. I dont really drink much but I just broke up with my boyfriend.

I drank three bottles of wine.”

She then proceeds to outline the events leading to the break-up and subsequent wine consumption.

The festivities are kicking up a gear and, though its been a while between sightings, another mullet strides purposefully past the tent – this one entering mohawk territory with its shaved sides.

It’s time for another patrol and there are more people congregating on the streets, looking out for fresh air, food and conversation.

“When do you get a purple one?” asks a passerby, pointing at my pink vest as we walk into Moss on Wood for a toilet break.

We stay inside long enough to hear Mango Junction playing Bryan Adam’s Summer of 69 and a Powderfinger song.

We then head back out to the street and walk past the long line of people trying to get into Maguires.

It’s now 12.50pm and time for the first shift to head back to the office to sign off for the night. For those flitting past us, chattering excitedly, it looks like the night is just beginning.

As we walk slowly down the road to the Street Chaplaincy office we see a rough-looking young guy in a flanno and heroic mullet engaged in what appears to be a heated exchange of words with a girl.

We slow down and Rex asks the guy if he is ok.

He looks up, offers a crooked smile and delivers, in a bold Shakespearean tone, the most eloquent words I’ve heard all night: “My Friend, I am SALUBRIOUS!”

THE Biblical parable of the Good Samaritan is one which encapsulates what grassroots Christianity is all about.

It is a story about ethical existence, a guide to living your life in a way that benefits others. It is a concept shared by all major religions.

The story, told by Jesus in the Gospel of Luke, is about a traveller who is robbed, beaten up and left to die on the road.

Several other road users from his own ethnic group happen upon him but leave him there to die.

Eventually a Samaritan (whose people are enemies of this man’s tribe) rides by and is filled with compassion.

He cleans the guy’s wounds with olive oil and wine (as was best medical practice at that time), bandages him up and takes him on his horse to a nearby inn. The Samaritan pays some money to the innkeeper and, when he leaves the next day to continue his journey, tells the innkeeper to take care of the wounded man as he will pay any further expenses on his way back.

A good man, to be sure.

Jesus ends the story by telling his gathered audience to “go and do likewise”.

It’s good advice and it guides the philosophy of the Mackay Street Chaplaincy.

Chaplaincy Coordinator Niki Vella-Power has been involved in the project since it began in 2012. “(The Chaplaincy) is based on the story of the Good Samaritan,” she says. “So, basically you don’t judge, you just give help where you see help is needed. And in doing that, you’re actually keeping God’s law.”

It’s this refusal to judge which really resonates with those who use the service.

“Mostly we work with the people in the nightclubs and those that are the nightclub patrons who have had a really good night out and suddenly it’s not as good a night out,” she says. “Also those who are having a good night out – just to keep them having a good night out by giving them water and making sure they know that we’re a safety net if they should need anything.”

Niki and her crew have got a real feel for the streets, they are street psychologists, if you will. They can sense the mood of any given night.

“Lately things have beem a lot happier,” Niki says. “But we do find every night is different. We have found that there are some nights, in particular. Saturdays are more a celebration.

Fridays are a bit of a release from work and so you get a little bit more of an irritability on a Friday night. I wouldn’t say it’s quite an angry night but it’s an irritability perhaps. Mostly because they’ve got whatever’s been happening during the week still going through their brain, I think. By Saturday, they’ve relaxed,” she smiles.

And, for Nikki, the time spent in Chaplaincy is a two-way exchange.

“Seriously, you get the best feedback from people,” she says.

“I actually was fairly newly widowed at that time I started... (and) I didn’t have that social network that a lot of others do and I have found that it’s awesome the people you meet doing Chaplaincy. But it’s also wonderful to be amongst an atmosphere where people are having fun and celebrating, even if they’re all a little bit crazy!”

It began like any other day, until...a monster

IT BEGAN just like every charter. Watching the sun coming up as we shot out to some of our favourite fishing spots.

The calm seas allowed us to get out to the shipping channel nice and early just in time to kickstart the day with a monster of a snapper.

The first of the season for us.

With a slow start to the morning we decided to head to a nearby reef to try our luck. The fish were hungry and we boated some of the best table fish around Coral Trout and Red throat Emperor.

We fished the reef while the tide was rushing and an hour before change of tide we headed back

to the channel to try our luck again. By this time the wind had picked up. As the weather was forecasted for 10knot variables this was unexpected and I’m sure it gave some locals a reminder why taking a 17ft boat out to the channel can be risky business.

We had a few drifts over the change of tide. A few drifts is all we needed hooking onto some good Nannygai and Red Emperor out of the deep water.

What a great way to finish up.

Cloudy weather on the way ON THE weather front: A partly cloudy weekend. Maybe a small isolated light shower Saturday afternoon. Fog in the mornings. The temperatures are very mild as well with minimums between the 13°C-16°C in the mornings on the coastline and 10’s°C in the Pioneer Valley. And Maximums around the mid 20’s°C in both Mackay and the Pioneer Valley. During the State Of Origin on Sunday night, the minimum temperature will drop back down the single figures so remember to keep those jumpers handy for whatever your plans are.

G’DAY to the Mackay Community!

Amy here and I hope you are all well and keeping warm even though the southerly is blowing some cold snaps our way.

I have been very busy these past few weeks and loving being out and about attending awesome community events in our stunning Mackay region.

This week I want to take us back to the basics with a simple guide to selecting a fishing rod and reel or a handline. I have put together the main tackle box staples to get you out fishing in Mackay. Now you do not need to spend ablot of money and Tackle World Mackay, BCF and Anaconda are stocked with everything that you need.

But where do you start?

You are either going to need a spinning reel and rod ‘combo’ meaning they are sold together as a package, or the traditional handline. Both are just as good but it depends on the a angler what they prefer to use and what feels comfortable for them.

When I was in Tackle World Mackay last week putting together my wishlist, I was excited to see the combo range had a size, style and price to suit anyone’s needs and or preferences.

My absolute favourite beginners combo is hands down the Diawa D Shock 6ft 2-4kg two-peice spin combo. This outfit couldn’t be more perfect for the beginner and can suit a wide range from salt, estuary to freshwater - it is a beauty of an all rounder.

It already comes with quality monoline so it is virtually ready to go from the moment the EFTPOS machine accepts the transaction. This eye-catching gold coloured combo breaks the bank at around $65-$70 and is worth every dollar!

Not all anglers go for the rod and reel and opt for the traditional handline which is cheaper and slightly simpler. You would be surprised to find handlines and a small variety of fishing gear stocked in Mackay City’s Dollars and Sense, Big W and Kmart have a fishing section or you can also purchase from tackle shop stockists - it is all up to you! If you are on a budget, it does pay to shop around!

So we now have the fishing apparatus and we now need the absolute staples for the putting together of your legenedary tackle box.

I recommend getting a combo that comes with monofilament line already but you will need a backup/leaderline for trace as well. So to set up your fishing rig start with around 8-10lbs as it can handle catching roughly up to a 10kg fish, just perfect for the beginner angler.

There is a massive range so if you do get overwhelmed don’t hesitate to ask staff, they are there to point you in the right direction. It pays to become friendly with them and yarn with locals

who actually get out and fish the area.

Straight up, grab yourself a pair of fishing pliers as these can be used in so many different ways and while you’re at it a pair of braid scissors are much better to use than your average craft scissors, trust me.

A filleting or fishing knife is good to have for when you do start catching and bringing fish to the family table, so grab one of those as well.

Next you will need hooks and my personal preference being the octopus or suicide hooks.

Try to stay away from snelled hooks as a beginner and, if you can, grab a couple of different sizes ranging from size 1/0 up to size 4/0.

Next is your sinkers and it also pays to grab a couple for trial and error when beginning to understand fishing. Start with small ball sinkers ranging from sizes one to four.

Bare in mind, if your sinker is too heavy the fish will feel the weight and drop the bait before they are hooked. But also too light and you won’t be able to get your bait to the bottom.

Grab some swivels that match the size of your line, hook and sinker as they stop your line from getting twisted and are a life saver. Now that we have the gear let’s rig up your new fishing line!

The running sinker is a beginner’s go to for catching several different species and this is the rig in sequential order: The running sinker rig consists of a sinker threaded onto the mainline above the swivel.

Next a length of trace line then leading down to the hook. The general rule for this rig is to keep your sinker small and trace line around 40-50cm long.

You can opt for a fishing bag or tackle box and this is entirely up to the person. They come in all shapes, sizes and colours for you to personalise to your liking. Lastly for your new-found fishing addiction you will need bait and I do urge you to purchase from your Tackle Shop as the quality is much better - as well as you are supporting local businesses.

It is important to take good care of your fishing gear and to wash it all down after saltwater fishing to avoid damaging your new best mate.

Never leave hooks,line or sinkers lying around or left over at your fishing spots and if you do see any around please try to tidy up and leave the area better then when you arrived.

The more we collectively as a community demonstrate fishing etiquette it will become easier for young anglers to learn and respect their community.

FIT: Runners compete on the weekend

Road Runners hold successful meet THE Mackay Road Runners 5km Junior and 30km Club Championships were held last weekend with a 15km option for runners not quite up to the longer distance.

Hosts Brendan, Julie, Millie and Hughie Bishop very generously opened up their home in the wee hours of the morning to support runners in a bid to earn themselves valuable age and open club championship points towards end of year trophies.

The Bishops have been staging this event for several years now, with a post race sausage sizzle as well as Hughie’s home made luscious red Icy Cups and Millie’s unique indigenous trendy hair/arm scrunchies for sale with funds going towards the Cathy Freeman Foundation - “Education changes Lives”.

Vital Mackay Road Runners Club volunteers were up way before dawn to set up the 5/15/30km courses which was a huge task

due to the distances options available. At 6am, approximately thirty 30km runners with headlamps were sent into the darkness by the club’s awesome registrar/timekeeper/treasurer, Arthur Dick.

Many thanks to Arthur for giving up his 30km race to support other runners’ achievements! First placed male, Mick Scholer ran a clinically focussed race from the gun, scoring gold ahead of second placed Joe Grech. Demi Caldwell continued her winning ways as she lead the 30km female field and secured herself maximum club championship points.

Demi’s excellent performance over the 30km proved she is a huge contender for the over all open female club champion, racking up wins in earlier shorter club championship races so far this year.

This Sunday morning’s 5km and 10km Robbo’s 69 Steps from the Gordon White Library, Mt Pleasant, will be another challenging affair but definitely a worthwhile outing with racing to commence at 7am sharp. Runners are to be registered in with the timekeeper 15 minutes prior to gun time with race chip bib attached.

Masters women break drought Mackay Masters Women broke their drought recently to win the Hockey Queensland Master Women State Championships.

The amazing Master’s ladies have been in the last four grand finals – sealing the deal in Warwick with a comprehensive win over Tweed.

A fantastic weekend of hockey was played in the cold snap in Warwick with all three Mackay teams representing our association with pride.

The weekend of June 19 saw a strong performance from the men and women of Norths.

Leading the A grade table the Devils again showed their depth with strong performances against Brothers. the Norths women kicked off the A Grade completion with a 7-0 win, followed by the men beating Brothers 4-2.

Arsenals women then took on Souths and in a close game.

The Sharkies came out on top 1-0 thanks to a cracking goal from Dayna Kelland.

The Souths men followed with a close 4-3 win over the Arsenal men.

Both games were tight and skilful.

The U-18 representative teams start their State Championships this weekend.

The men compete against the best in the State in Rockhampton with the women driving up the road to Townsville to do the same.

The Association wishes their players the best of luck and everyone is look forward to more of our local exceptional young athletes being identified for State selection.

Judo National Titles a family affair for Nolans ON JUNE 13 and 14, Mackay father-daughter duo Robert and Bella Nolan represented Queensland and the Mackay Kodokan Judo Club at the Judo National Titles held on the Gold Coast.

The event was well-attended, with competitors participating from all Australian states except for Victoria, who were unable to attend due to Coronovirus restrictions.

The competition was the culmination of several years of hard work and dedication for 16-year-old Bella and 43-year-old Robert, who had both trained to compete last year but were unable to due to the cancellation of the event.

It followed Bella’s selection into the State Judo Team in April 2021 after winning gold medals in all three of her divisions at the State Judo Titles in Cairns.

WINNERS: Bella and Robert Nolan Bella, a Year 11 student at North Mackay State High School, achieved a bronze medal in the Junior Women’s U52 kg division of the National Titles against a quality field of competitors which included members of the Australian National Team.

Robert won bronze medals in both the Veterans U73kg and Veterans Kyu U73kg divisions.

Both Robert and Bella plan to continue competing, with the next event being the Gold Coast International in September 2021.

Bella and Robert train with Mackay Kodokan Judo Club on Swayne St, North Mackay, under Sensei Wayne Palmer. Bella has been training for over six years, and Robert for over eight years.

Being able to tackle people and get in with the DUST: Dirt bikers give it some stick on the track

Bikers ready to get down, dirty THE Whitsunday Dirt Bike Riders will hold a Club Day on the Dirt tomorrow.

It’s an event five-to-seven years in the making; held under lights with racing expected to start at 2:30pm, continuing until 8.30pm.

While the track has been pre-

dominately a practice track up until now, the club has been working hard to get in shape to hold races.

With the previous race day having more than the 55 riders in attendance, tomorrow’s expectations are high with more expected to turn out to the event.

Whitsunday Dirt bike riders

vice president Ben Moran said it has been some hard work to finally get this race mees underway.

“It’s finally happening,” Moran said.

“We are expecting anything up to 70 riders this weekend.

“The race will be open to children with 50cc bikes, right

through to 450cc opens, so there will be more than 12 categories of riding.

“With permanent lighting on the track, which we have been trying very hard to get, this will be our first race meeting will be under lights.”

The Queensland Motocross Championships are now confirmed for the weekend of August 28, 2021 COVID-19 concerns had become a major speedbump for the Championships, which had originally been set to be held in Mackay July 10–11.

Mackay MotoCross club member Bianca Ross said competitors had been practicing hard in the lead up to the event, and riders were still welcome to use the Mackay track to train.

She said to replace the Queensland Motocross championships on the July 10-11 weekend, the Mackay Junior Motocross Club would host a Club Day for those who can make it.

“This will be the first interclub series with the last three club days taking place over the coming months,” she said.

“We have major funding from

Mackay Regional Council. They have jumped on board with us with a grant of $10,000 for marketing and promotion, so that has been a huge help to us.

Ross said with three hundred members of the club showing up to practices during next few months, clubs from other areas were also welcome to come and ride.

“With more than one hundred riders showing up on any given weekend on practice days, members from as far as Arlie Beach were attending the weekend practice,s as well as members from Whitsunday dirt bike riders.

“We have also had members from Moranbah, Dysart and Emerald starting to come to the sessions.”

“Riders are very keen to start the races, but we just have to settle on a date that people can compete.”

It’s a MAD best-kept secret APPARENTLY, one of the best kept secrets in Mackay albeit not an intentional one is the Mackay And District Mountain Bike Club (MADMTBC).

This is based out at the Scouts grounds of Rowallan Park. Rowallan Park is a beautiful place to ride with very thick scrub and rainforest areas. The trails accommodate the beginner up to advanced riders with features such as wooden jumps and drops, rock gardens, berms, step ups and much more.

Mountain biking is an amazing experience and you will lose yourself in the moment. At times with intense concentration on the difficult sections or when you chose to go faster. At other times you can just meander through on your bike and take in the beautiful scenery and ambience of the forest.

RIDERS: Mountain bikers head off on an adventurous racing circuit MADMTBC have a hire agreement with the Scouts at Rowallan Park and have been building and maintaining mountain bike trails there since 2009.

MADMTBC is an affiliated club previously with MTBA and now since the merger are with Auscycle.

They have just recently held the 2021 MAD Mountain Bike Classic; a T1 and C2 Category UCI Race which had riders from as far as New Zealand. This was one of the biggest races this year on the Queensland calendar.

MADMTBC hold regular club races, social rides at Rowallan Park and other areas in the region, a range of women specific activities, open days and they have just rejuvenated our school-aged junior coaching program on Thursday afternoons.

They have approximately 320 club members with some members loving to race and even travel as far as Tasmania to compete in various disciplines of mountain biking.

It is fantastic travelling away with a group of like-minded friends to beautiful places around

the country. They have some amazing riders winning Australian championships.

Other members are not into racing and love to ride socially at Rowallan Park or at some other organised MAD Social Rides in the region, and as far away as Atherton. Should you wish to join MADTMTBC and at ride Rowallan Park you will have to be a member of Auscycle.

There is a four week free trial period for those wanting to try mountain biking for the first time.

Ladies’ open LAST Saturday and Sunday saw the North Queensland Ladies Golf Open played in Proserpine. The NQ Open Champion is Laura Anderson, from Mackay and the NQ Senior Closed Champion is Sharyn Harris. Proserpine girls, Mel Patullo and Lyn Muller are the A Grade gross winner and runner up. Amanda Gees and Nola Giddens were the net winners and runner up. B Grade gross winner was Noelene Spurway, while Tiina Randmae and Elspeth Scotford took our the nett. In C Grade Sherri Meade is Champion, followed by Sandy Lockhard, Karen Vella and Peta Thomas. Seventy-five ladies nominated for the Open.

Social bowls

ON WEDNESDAY, Proserpine Bowls had seven players for Social Bowls. Bruce Uhe had the opportunity to play double lead.

Bruce, Arthur Griffith, Philip Brown and Garry Alexander defeated Bruce, John Anderson, John Lahney and Peter Lawton 26 - 14. On Sunday morning the second Semi Final of Men;s “B” Grade was played. Brett Sarogila and Gavin Noonan defeated Toby Craig and Dwayne Hiscox 26-11. The Final will be Brett and Gavin versus Peter Lawton and Dale Haack.with the winner of that game being eligible to play in the Champion of Champions on October 23 and 24.

Mud Crab union to host Ladies Night THE Mackay Cities and Bowen Mud Crab rugby union teams will be the ones taking to the field at Quarry Hill tomorrow night, but the toast of the night will be the ones who do most of the hard work behind the scenes.

To celebrate and thank the women who help make it all happen Mackay City Rugby Union will host a Ladies Night – and, there is wine!

That’s right! The mothers, grandmothers, carers, wives and girlfriends who put in a huge ef-

fort behind the scenes to make sure the players are ready to run on each week, will treated to a glass of wine with fruit and cheese platters to nibble from!

Mackay City Rugby Union Football Club member James Heron said it would be a fitting tribute to the women of the sport.

“This will be a thank you to the girlfriends, mothers and wives of the players; to let them enjoy themselves, as they are a big part of any community sport,” Heron said.

“It’s not the first time it has

been done by various clubs, but we just thought it would be nice to bring back this treat for the ladies.”

With the Mackay Cites team names grand finalists for 2020, the weekend’s game is expected to be a fantastic match up, with a strong and friendly rivalry between the two teams.

These teams will be gunning for a win with both teams giving it there all tomorrow and with such mutual respect neither team is looking to lose an inch of ground.

Kick off is 3pm Saturday.

IN ROUND Seven Mackay Fixtures, the U-12 Pearls’ tight defence proved too strong for WAS Quartz with the Pearls keeping them to just three goals for the game.

Many turnovers gave the Pearls plenty of opportunity to score coming away with a win, 123. MVP was awarded to Brina Kelly and Sophia Haines. Star player from Round Six was awarded to Lola Hornstra, as voted by the team. Under 14 Tsunamis had the week off due to a forfeit.

At full time it was 34-0 to Moranbah. A convincing win, but a score which belied the effort and mettle of the Souths Sharks girls who fought hard until the final whistle.

Pearls’ defense too tight

Ready for a tough game after only losing by two points in their first match up the Magpies proved too good on the day with the Tsunamis going down 44-19.

Johnstone plays 100 games Testimonial

By Stephen Thompson PATRICK Johnstone played his 100th club game with the Moranbah Bulldogs at the weekend, running on the field to face the Bakers Creek Tigers.

This is a fantastic milestone for a young man who has been a great leader at our footy club in helping to build what we all enjoy together today.

Pat came to us a pup with his amazing family and was a big part of the start of the junior club progression that we have seen over the past 5 years.

He along with many kids his age still playing together in the U17s, started out with Ross Branch in the Junior Match Program, with a handful of kids playing at the Kennel on Saturdays and in various carnivals at Mirani and Mackay.

It has been a pleasure to coach him and his group in the competition rebuild for our U12s team.

As the club began to rise, Pat and Callum spent many weekends traveling to Mackay to play many games with Sarina and Bakers Creek as a Moranbah player. This very much helped with his development and should be also credited for the player Pat is today and for the opportunity they provided him.

Pat and his mates then pioneered the U14s team and now the U17s paving the way for all of our junior boys and girls to have somewhere to ply their trade on Saturdays, in competition home

Miners slay U-14 Sharks

IT WAS a thriller for all the right reasons.

Moranbah Miners dominated the 2021 U14s girls rugby league grand final, at BB Print Stadium, sending South Sharks home as runners-up.

Moranbah Miners coach Kathryn

Rasmussen, said just being at the stadium and playing at the home of the Mackay Cutters was a buzz - especially after COVID-19 had wreaked havoc on the 2020 season.

“It was absolutely amazing,” she said.

“This year we have had to push hard and we lost players - some to injury and others who left town, but we have such a dedicated group,” Rasmussen said.

Souths coach, Naton Pitt said that the Sharks’ progress through the year had been great.

“We had a shaky start, but it was a fantastic finish,” Pitt said.

“The girls have really enjoyed themselves and I think that is why we made it this far.”
