Farmer threatens to block ADANI trucks FROM PAGE ONE In a dramatic battle which is rather like the mouse that roared, or David and Goliath, neighbouring farmers David and Katie Luke have threatened to use their bulldozer to block the mine-access road and stop thousands of trucks and construction of the Carmichael coal mine.

This is because it is alleged that ADANI company Bravus Resources has not paid its bills and honoured ADANI’s contracts to build an access road to Queensland’s newest massive coal mine.

An unnamed Bravus Mining and Resources spokesperson told the Mackay Local News that, “As announced in November 2018, the Carmichael Mine and Rail Project is fully funded, including funds required for upgrades to the public-owned Mine Access Road in the Isaac Region.

“Construction is well underway and we look forward to delivering first coal later this year.”

However, in a claimed breach of a compensation agreement

signed by ADANI in 2016, thousands of trucks and road trains pass though the front garden of David and Katie’s Moray Homestead on their way to the Carmichael coal mine.

A bulldozer-led halt to the coal mine is now expected because Mr Luke, the Isaac Council and state Burdekin MP Dale Last all doubt previous claims by ADANI and Bravus Resource that it does not have the money to build an access road on his station’s boundary to the mine.

“When I signed the compensation agreement in 2016, ADANI had 21-days, weather permitting, to build a boundary cattle fence on the edge of my station to their mine,” Mr Luke said.

“Then Adani said it didn’t have the money to build the road. And so to do the right thing, I rejected a monetary payment and offered a land swap, as long as they shifted the road away from the bush track, to and through my station homestead.

“I offered to compromise and I bent over backwards to help ADANI.

“Then I couldn’t believe it when they built a quarry on the Isaac Council’s gazetted new route for the access road.

“Our grandfathers died to protect this country and now we are giving it away.

“Not one landowner objected to the mining lease application as we wanted to work with ADANI, as we used to have an excellent working relationship with ADANI.” The irony of the looming halt to trucking and the construction of the Bravus Resources/ADANI’s coal mine is that critics claim the access road and fencing costs are small change, when compared with the $2 billion costs of building the coal mine.

It’s also claimed that Bravus has inflated the $100M cost to build the Isaac Council’s requested access road.

“I certainly hope that these delays in failing to deliver noncore mining road and cattle fencing will cease to be continually delayed,” Mr Last said.

“The Palaszczuk Government has given ADANI/Bravis its mining licence and it has the power to prosecute them for failing to ensure serious environmental harm is not caused to the land owners!

“I recently met with ADANI/ Bravus Resources CEO Lucas Dow and I stressed his responsibility to honour ADANI’s contract obligations to the landowners and to the councils and for them to be good corporate citizens.”

Trucking halt could risk $16b COVID in sewers ‘not bad news’

A TRUCKING halt to ADANI’s Carmichael mine would delay and puts at risk $16 billion in royalties to be paid to the Queensland Government by the ADANI company, Bravus Resources.

The Palaszczuk Government’s former opposition to the ADANI coal mine has been blamed with causing former federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten to lose the last federal election, when every federal electorate north of Brisbane fell to the Morrison Government.

In a bizarre twist, Queensland’s the Deputy Premier Steven Miles and his Coordinator General Tony Power, plus Mines Minister Scott Stewart have all now been accused of looking the other way.

They appear to be ignoring breaches to contractual road and environmental obligations with landowners, and the Isaac and Whitsunday Regional Councils.

Local regional Burdekin MP Dale Last expressed his frustration at this unnecessary dispute.

“This is what happens when agreements are not honoured,” he said. “For landholders to take this

‘I certainly hope that ADANI Bravus will move quickly to address (landholder) concerns and also with all other surrounding landholders and with both councils.

An unnamed Bravus spokesperson said the company “values our relationship with all our neighbours and over the years we have worked hard to ensure our Project can co-exist with their existing pastoral businesses.

“We understand and share Mr Luke’s frustration that we have been unable to complete upgrades

Adani Aus CEO Lucas Dow to the publicly-owned council road and complete fencing on his property. We require approval of our proposed road design from Isaac Regional Council prior to us being able to undertake the works.

“We will continue to actively pursue approvals from Isaac Regional Council so we can get on with upgrading the public road, including the section in front of Mr Luke’s property, as soon as possible.

“We continue to seek resolution with the Isaac Regional Council in relation to approval of our plans to spend more than $100 million to upgrade the council-owned road.”

NEWS that fragments of the COVID-19 virus have been found in weekly testing of Mackay’s sewerage system is actually not bad news.

CSIRO’s Land and Water Science Director Dr Paul Bertsch said advanced or early warning detection is incredibly useful for monitoring and response in the recovery phase.

“COVID-19 genetic material in waste water may come from a person who has recovered from the COVID virus and is still shedding but is no longer infectious,” he said. “It doesn’t necessarily mean that there is social transmission in the community, but it does raise awareness that anyone with minor symptoms should go and get tested.”

Clearly, a single positive test does not mean that there is a COVID pandemic in Mackay which would cause an uncontrolled spread of the virus and strike down people across the community.

However Dr Bertsch explained that repeat positive COVID results in (Mackay’s) sewerage water may indicate that an infectious person is living or visiting (Mackay), who has not yet been identified.

“The results will strengthen Queensland Health’s cautious response to the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.

“Repeated detections of COVID-19 will highlight the importance of everyone getting tested, especially if you have cold and flu type symptoms similar to COVID-19.”

Dr Bertsch said weekly collection and testing of sewerage water by the Mackay Regional Council,

and the CSIRO is particularly useful for catchments with vulnerable populations where testing using other methods may not be feasible.

“It demonstrates that Australia has the capability to deliver timely COVID-19 wastewater surveillance data to inform decisions, response actions and public communications.

“Any detection of SARS-CoV-2 virus in the region’s wastewater is assessed by Queensland Health against recent known cases in our region.

“It is also important to stay home and isolate until everyone of us gets the results of your COVID-19 test and your symptoms resolve.”

Queensland Health advises that if COVID-19 is detected in the greater Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday regions, then it is important for each of us to stay 1.5m from other people, or two big steps.

“Washing hands frequently with soap and water or hand sanitiser after physical contact with other people or commonly touched surfaces is also important,” they said. “The possible spread of COVID is minimised if we always sneeze or cough into our arm or into a tissue and wash or sanitise your hands.”

Queensland Health is taking sewerage water samples for testing from larger population centres, from popular holiday towns and some communities close to the border with NSW. More testing locations may be added to the program in the future.

Wastewater surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 is now carried out across Australia and overseas in countries including Canada, Spain, Holland, New Zealand, the United States.

Ride against darkness THIS Sunday Black Dog Ride’s “1 dayer” will bring together motorbike riders for a memorable day to raise awareness of depression and suicide prevention.

Eight Australians take their lives every day, which means one life is lost to depression every three hours. An estimated 180 people attempt suicide each day in this country.

Black Dog Riders aim to provide hope to communities and encourage Australians living with depression to seek assistance.

Black Dog Ride Mackay coordinator Charles Linsley said raising awareness of depression in communities can be the best way to stop suicide.

“Dozens of Mackay riders will use this, the ninth annual ride in Mackay, to drag the black dog out of the shadows and kickstart conversations to raise awareness of depression and suicide prevntion ins the Mackay Regional Community,” Mr Linsley said.

80 percent of Black Dog Ride participants have experienced depression or know someone who has.

Drug trade a scourge THE Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission’s (ACIC) CEO Mr Michael Phelan, said Australia’s Illicit drug trade is debilitating and destroying lives and the fabric of many communities in Australia.

“It is one of the more tragic, harmful and wasteful aspects of illicit drug markets,” Mr Phelan said.

“Organised crime groups make money through whatever illegal means they can and profit from the importation, manufacture, trafficking and sale of drugs that cause harm to the community. #“By measuring the level of consumption of illicit drugs and legal drugs with abuse potential, then we can identify new sources of threat and be used as a key indicator of the harm posed by these substances.

“The ACIC continues to provide advice to Government, law enforcement and policy partners on drug trends during the COVID-19 pandemic and the period of related restrictions.

Regional Qld, highest ecstasy use in Aus REGIONAL Queensland has Australia’s the highest use of the illegal drug ecstasy or MDMA consumption in Australia and the second highest use of cocaine and methyl amphetamine.

On February 25, the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission Report disclosed that analysis of sewerage water at Mackay’s two treatment plants and at each individual sewerage treatment site across the nation is kept secret.

However this information may be available to Mackay Police and other drug detection agencies.

Analysis of Mackay’s sewerage water suggests that there may be undetected illegal drug or ‘meth labs’ in northern Queensland, plus that drugs are being transported north from Brisbane and from other southern capital cities.

The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) Report’s found that per capita consumption of cocaine and heroin in capital cities exceeded regional consumption.

More importantly, the Report also found the per capita regional consumption of all the other drugs

Clearly this has implications for response options because Mackay’s police and other anti-drug agencies resources, which are more thinly spread in northern Queensland and across regional Australia.

Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission CEO Mr Michael Phelan said that drug markets are resilient.

“In the year to August 2020,

the annual estimated consumption of cocaine, MDMA and heroin was at the highest level recorded and the consumption of methylamphetamine at the second highest recorded level,” he said.

The Report also found that possibly due to COVID-19 restrictions, between April 2020 and August 2020 regional consumption of methylamphetamine, heroin and fentanyl decreased, while alcohol, nicotine, cocaine, oxyco-

done and cannabis increased and MDMA consumption remained relatively stable.

“Sewerage water analysis across the nation found that Australians waste more than $8.9 billion a year methylamphetamine, cocaine, MDMA and heroin in a year.”

The 12th Annual Report estimated that 11.1 tonnes of methylamphetamine was consumed in Australia, as well as 5.6 tonnes of

cocaine, 2.6 tonnes of MDMA, and one tonne of heroin.

Seventy-eight per cent of $6.96 billion was spent on methylamphetamine.

The Report found that between April 2020 and August 2020 the population-weighted average consumption of methylamphetamine and fentanyl in capital cities decreased, while consumption of all other drugs increased.

Analysis of Mackay and other sewerage plants water also found that alcohol and nicotine remain the most consumed drugs in Australia, with methylamphetamine the most consumed illicit drug.

This analysis was part of the National Wastewater Drug Monitoring Program led by The University of Queensland and The University of South Australia and Queensland Health.

University of Queensland Alliance for Environmental Health Sciences (QAEHS) Director Professor Kevin Thomas said this partnership provides a clear picture of drug consumption across Australia in of the most advanced programs in the world.

MACKAY’S Harmony Day celebrates the many different cultures in the sugar city.

Neighbourhood Hub’s Community Development Officer Valeyria Edsall said Harmony Day and Harmony Week makes her feel welcome in Australia.

“I have come to appreciate everything Australia has to offer and it makes me feel welcome,” Mrs Edsall, who is originally from Russia, said.

“I really appreciate the significance of this week and Harmony Day for migrants.

“Anyone in Australian is made to feel welcome and appreciated, regardless of us coming from so many different backgrounds and cultures and experiences.

“It’s so important to belong, it gives me a sense of identity, safety, and community.”

Mrs Edsall said the outcome of the celebrations is to bring the community together and they hope to have a big attendance.

“Harmony day the first large multi-cultural community event held in Mackay,” she said.

“The purpose is to bring local families together, so we can start celebrating our relationships and connections, strengthen our friendships and reach out to people next to you.”

Mrs Edsall said another focus is to highlight local cultures and there will be quite a few cultural stalls at the event.

“It will be so great just to be there together, celebrating our diverse and rich in who we are, so we’re all part of the same community.

“Free events include local musicians, performances and an amazing array of stalls, along with activities for the children such as jumping castles. But none of this would have been possible without the support and funding of the Queensland Government and from the Mackay Regional Council.”

Mine to reopen with remote technology

ANGLO-AMERICA’s Grosvenor Mine at Moranbah will be operated remotely when production starts up this year.

Grosvenor existing coal mine, which closed after a methane gas explosion, will reopen in second half of this year.

Anglo-American’s Corporate and Communications Manager Lisa Clifford said the use of automation and remote operation includes the purchase of new longwall equipment for Grosvenor Mine, which will be fast-tracked.

“Moranbah North is piloting some of this pioneering work including remote longwall operation,” she said.

“Removing people from poten-

tial harm offers the greatest opportunity to materially improve safety in underground coal mining.

“This technology will provide opportunities for operators to perform their roles from different areas of the mine, such as new surface remote operations centres.”

Anglo-American introduced these changes after its Grosvenor Mine experienced a methane gas fire last May and the mine was sealed with concrete.

Underground mining was suspended while investigations took place. Five workers were injured and transferred to Brisbane for treatment after receiving medical assistance at Moranbah Hospital.

The workers were later discharged in a stable condition.

were sent home on full pay and only essential staff were kept onsite for recovery work.

Anglo-America is seeking Resources Safety and Health Queensland’s (RSHQ) approval to re-enter the mine to perform inspections, including power and gas restoring.

Lisa Clifford said safety is the main priority and they are reviewing processes and controls, after production was stopped in May 2020. “(We) are investing in new data science and technological innovation, to ensure our underground operations go beyond current industry best practice,” she said.

“We have committed to a range of measures to improve our controls and introduce further tech-

nological innovations across our underground mines.

“We are further bolstering our automation and remote operation plans and making strong progress across our underground operations in the Bowen Basin.”

However the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) said Anglo-America’s automation of select jobs and some workers operating remotely at Grosvenor mine will pose additional risks which have not been considered.

The union’s Queensland President Stephen Smyth said Anglo-American still need miners to undertake all the work required in these underground areas.

Pressure mounts on Govt over pest spread THE Palaszczuk Government and Agriculture Minister Mark Furner are coming under increasing pressure to stop the uncontrolled spread of damaging weeds, Crazy Ants and Fall Army Worms in Northern Queensland.

Research by Dr Daniel Montesinos from James Cook study has supported pleas by Mackay Regional Council’s, Marty Bella for a combined community volunteer, environmentalists, plus local, state and federal governments to jointly campaign to stop the uncontrolled spread of noxious weeds, Crazy Ants and Fall Army Worms.

Dr Montesinos said invasive plants usually take hold in land that has been disturbed by human intervention on farms and on roadsides and then spread.

“If we can limit disturbance of natural environments, we can reduce biological invasions, particularly in tropical areas that are threatened by increasing human encroachment.”

However Dr Montesino’s findings has been contradicted and challenged by North Queensland canegrower and Mackay Regional Councillor, Marty Bella.

“It took a study to find out what people on the land have known for years and have

been ignored,” Cr Bella said. “To give context, while not a weed, a little over 100km to our north there is an infestation of Yellow Crazy Ant. These ants spray formic acid which forms a dense cloud.

“Imagine we spent the millions on a mountain bike track at Eungella and it breaks out there.

“All those dollars wasted – all that native wildlife in danger.”

Cr Bella said the Queensland Government was monitoring the Fall Army Worm in the islands to the north of us. “Yet it took a landowner to find them after they had been here for a considerable period.”

“Improvements only came about because of the failure in the culture of the management for

“The fact is we already have most of this in place and these changes (already in place) are a step forward.”

Country festival on Keppel OUR local annual island country music festival will be at Great Keppel Island in July.

This is the third year for Country on Keppel and will feature amazing country stars including Mackay’s very own Brad Butcher and Bella Mackenzie, who won the talent competition last year.

The festival will be held on July 16 to 18 and include the Green Brothers Country in the Keppel Talent Search section.

Last year’s festival was one of the few music events held during COVID restrictions and was a

great success. This year’s Country on Keppel will feature the SaltbushSix, who are excited to return to this festival.

They said had a great time at last year’s Country on Keppel and can’t wait to be there again this year.

Festival organiser Peter Blundell is looking forward to welcoming more fans to the island country concert this year.

“There aren’t a lot of other country festivals held on an island,” Mr Blundell said.

“The relaxed festival atmo-

sphere means fans have access to the artists and everyone is here to mingle and have a fun weekend.

“Many country artists now regard the island festival as their favourite event of the year.

“I knew from the moment the idea was floated that Country on Keppel would be a runaway success,” the festival organiser said.

“Country on Keppel is now my favourite event of the year with great, new and exciting artists and some of the most beautiful scenery in Australia.”

Our Mayor rocks out Mackay Regional Council Mayor Greg Williamson was on hand to announce a new festival recently.

The Mayor (pictured left) strapped on a guitar and donned a cowboy hat at the launch of this year’s Rock’n’Country festival.

Planning for the festival began back in 2019 after Local Building Maintenance Pty Ltd owner Geoff Baguley and other residents approached the Mackay Reigonal Council about the event.

It took a couple of years to fire up due to the COVID pandemic but will run this year from August 20 to 22.

“We are definitely at the point, where it’s all systems go,

everything is in place,” Mr Baguley said.

Mr Baguley said he was looking forward to the event starting up and believed it would be a hit.

“This is a major fundraiser for variety charity,” he said.

“The variety charity starts just after this festival – ten days after our festival.

“This is about raising money for the needy kids in Australia, in Queensland and more importantly, in North Queensland. We are hoping to raise $100,000 for this event for Variety.”

Mr Baguley said he was impressed with how lavishly dressed the Mayor was for the announcement.

Singer’s fond memories

FORMER Mackay-based singer-songwriter Brad Butcher enjoyed last year’s Country on Keppel and has many fond memories The highlight was meeting his future wife on the island and they now have two children in a blended family with a third child on the way.

“I enjoy bringing friends to Great Keppel Island, especially when its their first time to see seeing the island,” the singer said.

“I played at the festival last year and I gotten to know the guys on the island.

“I’ve also been keeping tabs on what’s been going on in the music industry and what festivals are happening and what not.

“When I came across Country on Keppel last year, I couldn’t say

no, so I reached out and thankfully they had me on board.

“This year, I’m going to present my songs, hang out with some mates and have a good time.

“I’ve got four albums out these days and I have plenty of songs to choose from.

“My style and music lands on the fringes of country, soap and even rocking blues at times.”

Brad Butcher said he has a new album on the way and last year’s break from performing with COVID was a much-needed break that he didn’t realise he needed.

“Last year I put my guitars down for seven months didn’t touch them.”

“I actually went back to a day job, as I had to to make an income.

But he’s raring to go for this year’s festival.

IN THE lead up to Neighbour Day on Sunday, March 28, Mackay Regional Council is running its My Legendary Neighbour campaign.

The campaign is to encourage people to think about their relationships with their neighbours.

“When there’s a natural disaster, it’s neighbours who help each other to prepare and who pick up the pieces in the recovery process,” Mayor Greg Williamson said.

Mayor Williamson said the campaign encouraged people to think about their relationships with their neighbours.

He said close neighbours created resilient communities. What we want you to do is nominate your legendary neighbour, or maybe your street or cul-de-sac.

“We’ve got some share platters and barbecue packs as prizes and all you have to do to go in the draw is tell us in 200 words or less what’s great about your neighbour.

“Maybe you have a carpool setup or share a meal on a regular basis – maybe it’s something as

simple as seeing a smiling face over the fence and getting a warm greeting each day.

“Sometimes the simple things make a big difference.”

Madison Bradford from Diane Street, Mount Pleasant, vhas already nominated her neighbours Bill and Jo as legends in the campaign.

“Bill and Jo are always there to help me when my husband is away,” Madison wrote in her submission.

“Bill has cleaned and detailed my car, taken me to buy a new car battery and changed out the old one for me. Bill will take out the bins for me if its getting later in the day and he sees that my bins aren’t out yet. Bill and Jo care for our dog when we go away.

“They care for the health and wellbeing of myself and my family! I am so incredibly grateful to have Bill and Jo as my neighbour!”

NEIGHBOUR Day will be celebrated in Mackay and around Australia next Sunday, March 28.

The event is an annual celebration of community which encourages people to connect with their neighbours, whether they are near, far, or even online.

The annual day is organised by leading service provider Relationships Australia. This year’s theme is “Every day is neighbour day” and is a call to action for all Australians to connect and support each other.

While Neighbour Day is officially celebrated on the last Sunday in March each year, the purpose of the campaign is to raise national awareness of the importance of social connection and neighbourly actions throughout the year. It encourages people to make meaningful connections which last beyond the day itself.

“Staying connected with others is a basic human need,” said Chris Alderson, Team Leader for Relationships Australia Queensland (RAQ), Mackay and Bowen.

“And after the tough times we’ve all been through in 2020, it’s more important than ever to draw strength from each other, our relationships and our community.

Come in spinner THE VALLEY Spinners and Craft Club has been running for 45 years and president Margaret Borg has enjoyed 32 of those years.

Mrs Borg said she and her family have spun beautiful rugs and clothing from wool for countless generations.

“We actually spin wool from fleece and very natural, goes right back,” Mrs Borg said.

“Our mum and our heritage have always been very interested in wool and yarns.

“My sister is an accomplished weaver and has got me into it, naturally into weaving and then one thing into another.

“It’s just our absolute joy.’

Speaking of how the Valley Spinners came about, she said ‘it started with five ladies learning to spin in the valley.’

“We still have two of our original foundation members with us,” she said. “It is a very, very good club. We make very, very nice woven rugs and some beautiful rugs even woven in cotton.

“Lots of beautiful knitting – very, very talented ladies, our group are.”

Mrs Borg said the very talented and beautiful ladies meet at Garget twice a month.

Pool group dissolved PNG park

THE Memorial Pool Community Reference Group has been dissolved on March 10 by a formal Council vote.

The group was established on January 2020 to provide community input into the pool’s future. However, the group was advised six months late that the site for the swimming centre was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register.

This listing was said to limit Council’s ability to undertake significant redevelopment.

“This has impacted the role of the community reference group to the point where it is considered no longer required,” Mackay Regional Council Deputy Mayor Karen May said. “It was established to provide council with input into redevelopment plans in keeping with community needs and the most efficient use of public funds and resources.

“Council is committed to maintaining the Memorial Swimming Centre to its current standard for the community and will continue to work with the operator to ensure the provision of this service. Operationally, there has been little change and routine maintenance continues to be undertaken.”

THE Mackay Papua New Guinean community held its monthly catch up at the Botanic Gardens on Saturday.

About 40 people turned up during the day, with each family bringing a plate of food to share, and enjoyed a picnic.

It was an opportunity for the PNG community to get together brush up on their Tok Pisin with “wantoks” (those sharing a language and heritage) and to meet new people.

Good news for ageing bridge

BLOOMSBURY’S aging, flood-prone Caping Road bridge will soon be replaced.

Mackay Regional Council Mayor Greg Williamson said Council will build a new and raised concrete floodway and bridge, which will be 24.2m long by 5.2m wide, with a 1m raise.

“When built, this bridge will cater for a 100-year floods,” Mayor Williamson said.

“Farmers and other rural drivers will be able to drive across the bridge more often

and without having to wait for floods. In particular, graziers will benefit the most as they will be able access market access.”

Mayor Williamson said the ageing timber bridge is 9km north of Bloomsbury connects an isolated agricultural community to the wider regions.

“But the current timber bridge is prone to flooding, which makes this road inaccessible to traffic when the O’Connell river floods.

“When this happens, sediment will col-

lect and block access until council workers can safely remove it.

“Unfortunately, every time the river floods the timber bridge is also damaged.

“The four-span timber girder bridge is 24m long and 4m wide and caters for a single lane of traffic.

“The new single lane concrete bridge will also provides adequate fish movement to Department of Agriculture and fisheries standards.”

Mack Word on the street is that Rock, Pop, Mime will be back!

What a crazy concept. Adding mime to rock and pop. Hilarious but necessary, and I do love a big dancey MC dance night in the cold amphitheatre gardens. Dancers performing on concrete usually makes my head explode but it is not about that. It is about getting together as a school crew and cutting some rad shapes.

I had the pleasure of judging with Cr Fran Mann who is usually busy making Mackay awesome from a council perspective but on Rock, Pop and Drag, whoops Mime night – we ate hot dogs and chips together and celebrated a rad event run by the good crew at Lions.

Now that St Pats and Mercy College have combined powers, it seems natural that a big, flashy musical is the best way to celebrate.

One of Mackay’s leading directors, educators, and co-owner of Red Giraffe Theatre Tania Attard is directing Fame the Musical with Natalie Porter handling the leg-warming choreography and Molly Rossetto making the vocals sweet as pie. The cast is out of control.

No seriously. I am kickin’ rocks I did not sell my diamonds to fund this beast myself.

Mackay has always boasted an insane talent pool in our youth department and shows like Fame will highlight the beautiful work that the performing arts schools promote in our region.

The MECC is ready for some lycra spectacular and, trust me, Tania knows how to direct some of the most successful musicals Macktown has seen. Most notably Hairspray and JC Superstar for MMCP, 13 the musical and A Chorus Line for Red Giraffe Theatre.

Lauren Neill is the ruby encrusted daughter of Greg and Carolyn Neill who have owned and operated the finest jewellery boutique in QLD since I was drinking strawberry milk in primary school.

The fiery red darling has more talent than you could dream of and I remember having no problem when she would slay me in every section of the Eisteddfod. Recently the superstar was co-writer and producer on the award-winning short film, A Remarkable Career.

The film has been screened and adored all over the world and won best film at Short and Sweet Australia and Lauren received International Best Actress at a lavish ceremony in LA. A dedicated cat lover and acting technician, this is a genuinely great moment for our community to relish in a former local

kid doing great things that the whole world is drooling over. For the record, Lauren is the loudest.

The Mackay Festival of Arts is back in July and will have a new boss taking care of all the things. The highly coveted position is being auditioned as this goes to print. Considering every arts admin in Oz is looking for work, I would assume someone great is coming to fill the lovely Leah’s shoes. “Why not nab the job yourself,” many of you think, ask at launches and DM? Well, nope, no thanks. I am creative by trade and my efforts are better producing shows, consulting on festivals, writing articles such as this and posting about my boozy ‘meetings’ pool side mid-week on social media.

The supper club has been a touch beige in recent years, but I am assured that this year, it is back with a mighty roar. The festival will feature my favourite day of the year the wine and food day with two of the town’s best bands - The Base Coats and Folks Like Us. Local all-round theatrical boss lady Vicky Bob will direct Avenue Q for MMCP in September. Speaking of THE show to take reluctant dads to, this is the gear.

COVID’s election power NEW analysis from the Social Policy Research Centre at UNSW Sydney shows more than 50 marginal electorates could be decided by people affected by the cuts to social security payments after JobSeeker is Cronavirus Supplement is wound down.

The data shows an average of 13,000 people in each electorate (more than 10 percent of electors, on average), 9000 of whom receive JobSeeker or Youth Allowance (Other) will have their incomes cut at the end of March.

Listen to Mackay’s greatest son How many economists, planners, consultants and other fee gougers does it take to get a project going around these parts?

By the look of it, an average of three consultancy reports over three decades was what it took to get the Mackay Ringroad, the Eton Range Crossing and now the Walkerston bypass somewhere close to ordering bulldozers.

And the Urannah Dam is on its fourth consultancy ($10 million of your hard earned) in 60 years. And don’t order the dozers yet!

One of the greatest sons of Mackay ought to be the standard of ‘how to get things done’.

William Forgan Smith was born in Glasgow, Scotland and was an apprentice painter and decorator when he migrated to Mackay where his Aunt lived in 1912.

By 1915 at age 28 he was elected MP for Mackay in 1915.

In 1932, at the height of the Great Depression he was elected Premier of a state with barely a penny in the Treasury, huge unemployment, a sugar industry in turmoil, and heavily in debt.

With just two economists (count them – one was brilliant Cambridge professor Colin Clark, the other my uncle Bill Herbert) in the Queensland government, he began rebuilding thestate through an active public works program. He sailed to England and persuaded the Pommy bankers to lend the state a heap of money which he used to – extend the railway all the way from Brisbane to Cairns (just as well given its vital need in WW2), start upgrading the Bruce Highway, invest in bankrupt sugar mills to get them up and running again, build the sugar export sheds and terminals, lift the wages of the unemployed so long as they found work on these infrastructure schemes (like a state-run Jobkeeper – which he kept going to WW2).

There were the naysayers and nabobs of negativity.

A strong-minded politician, Forgan Smith declared a State of Emergency to force through some of the changes.

But after his second term, Queensland had the highest wages and lowest unemployment in Australia, the

state railway and road network was greatly improved and the sugar industry found its feet (and still uses the export infrastructure he funded and built).

All from a strong-minded man of Mackay.

He had a social heart – that a decent job with decent working conditions was the most important benefit for a family, and if the government had to force the issue to get projects tarted, then he used all the government powers.

He didn’t need teams of media advisors or consultancies. He just made decisions.

When he announced a project, he wasn’t announcing some consultancy to overpaid city based, foreign owned consultants. He was actually getting the dozers started (and many blokes on picks and shovels in those days).

We’ve just had a $250,000 consultancy to explore air freight flights between Proserpine and Toowoomba.

As someone in that horticultural freight sector, I could suggest $25,000 would more than cover any thorough investigation.

Then I’d invoke William Forgan Smith and just get on with it.

(Footnote - Ironically many of the consultants spinning out and holding up projects took their university lectures in the Forgan Smith Building, named after him at University of Queensland – he’d be rolling in his grave)

Hairdressing makes the cut Mackay now has its very own hairdressing school.

TAFE had closed its hairdressing course and, up until now, the Palaszczuk Government provided hairdressing training online.

As a result, passionate and experienced hairdressing trainer and assessor Sherry Bombardeieri has started her own hairdressing school, SB Hair, which is an abbreviation of her name.

Sherry has been a hairdresser for 30 years so is perfectly placed to teach others the trade.

“I have been inspired to teach modern techniques and train the next generation with creative and amazing hairstyles,” she said.

“I have a passion for training and for the last four years I was a trainer and assessor initiating a dedicated training business.

“My focus is on training, where I understand that everybody learns differently.”

Sherry explained that most hairdressers do their training online and it is so much better to have face-to-face personal training.

“I have partnered with All About Hair and Beauty back in Rockhampton, who will help with the training.

The experienced hairdresser said she was excited to bring back a face-to-face personal training back.

“I wanted to use my training to help Mackay’s upcoming students and to give them more creative training, where I can combine my passion and my trade.”

“I also teach student hairdressers how to advise clients on what

styles suit them as not all styles suit everyone.

“So part of our job is to give advice on what suits.

“We give the proper advise to say, yes, that will work really well, or no, why don’t we try this instead.”

Sherry said the response and reception to her hairdressing school has been ‘really good’ and the community has been supportive.

“I train in techniques which is the backbone of hairdressing, where I incorporate modern techniques to help create the latest styles seen on social media.

“Factors such as lifestyle, facial shape, hair textures and what clients want to achieve are important considerations.”

Qld shows resilience

AMID the backdrop of unpredictability that is the coronavirus pandemic, one area of the Queensland economy that’s remained remarkably resilience is Mackay’s property market.

The Mackay region has seen an increase of 4.5 percent in house prices in the last 12 months based on the latest figures from the Queensland Market Monitor (Dec, 2020).

Plus despite the uncertainty of COVID-19, one thing is for sure, home loan interest rates are the lowest in Australia’s history with the official cash rate at 0.10 percent.

According to the recently released Buy Vs Rent Report 2020

by Corelogic, the costs of paying down a mortgage in regional Queensland is trending lower, so loan repayments are lower than the costs associated with renting for both houses and units.

This recent trend has been driven by several factors including the fact that rents have been rising at a faster pace than values over the past decade.

The median house value across regional Queensland has risen by a modest 2.7 percent in ten years while rents are up 20 percent over the same period of time.

The trend across the unit sector is similar, albeit less pronounced, with the median unit value rising 8.6 percent over the past decade while the median rental rate for units is 15.6 percent higher.

The median vacancy rate across Mackay is 0.5 percent, so it’s the tightest the region’s rental market since 2010, according to the REIQ Quarterly Vacancy Report.

Rents, on average, have risen by a median of 10 percent over the last few years, with availability seesawing between tight and relatively healthy conditions, the effects of rental supply and demand in recent months is driving rents higher across Mackay.

More people want to rent homes and with a very limited supply, rental prices are rising.

Rent is normally a tenant’s biggest living expense.

As the property market hots up, people will be moving house

Mortgage loan interest rates also affect price elasticity in housing and when interest rates are lower, you can afford a larger loan.

This enables you to stretch a bit more on home prices, which means an increased demand in Mackay.

In fact, first home buyers continue to be out in force, with the number of first home buyer loan commitments rising 9.6 percent to reach 16,664, a 70.8 percent rise from January 2020.

This is now at its highest level since May 2009, when similar rapid growth was spurred by the temporary tripling of the first home-owner grant in response to the global financial crisis.

Current property market conditions are ripe for property investors as well. Interestingly, the Property Investment Professionals of Australia’s (PIPA) Annual Investor Sentiment Survey 2020 recently revealed 67 percent of investors are still looking to purchase property.

Queensland is rated highest for investment prospects at 36 percent, with investors keen to look for regional opportunities.

Fix for factory space shortage The Sentinel Property Group is solving the shortage of large factory space in Mackay.

Sentinel’s Executive Chairman and Chief Investment Officer, Warren Ebert has announced construction of its second industrial development in Mackay in the past 6 months.

“Our first industrial facility was at 40 Gateway Drive, Paget and was leased before construction was completed,” Mr Ebert said.

“Mackay’s industrial sector has continued to power through the covid period with mining related businesses continuing to grow.

“Availability for quality industrial facilities

in Mackay is at an all-time low, so our Sentinel Property Group is pushing ahead with their industrial development to meet this increasing demand.

“Construction of our second project at 22 Gateway Drive, Paget is well underway with expected completion in June this year.

“The factory will have 2,202 sqm high bay workshop space, including office shell and amenities, on a 7,350 sqm site.”

Mr Ebert said Paget is a High Impact Industry zoning which allows for a variety of users and a 24/7 operation.

“There is ample hardstand areas on concrete and gravel, with additional area available across neighbouring lots if required.

“22 Gateway Drive has full drive around capability with drive-through access for semi-trailers. The factory will have double width, 7.5m to 9m wide roller doors on the front, sides and rear of the workshop.

Mr Ebert was the factory will have a 20-tonne overhead crane, with an additional capacity for crane options up to 100-tonnes.

Steel is reframing housing problem

Artificial reef on the way

AN EXCITING new artificial Pioneer River reef project will enhance recreational and tourist fishing experiences off Bridge Road, Brisbane and Carlyle Streets.

Complex marine habits will be created near three fishing platforms which will be within casting distances.

The Mackay Regional Council believes these artificial reefs will attract a more anglers and help to get people hooked on fishing in Mackay.

The Council has reported that increasing fish habitats with artificial reefs will attract a greater number of larger fish and more desirable fish species.

The artificial reefs will be made from concrete and over time, these new fish habitats will be indistinguishable due to the rapid growth of reef-building marine organisms.

Mackay’s fishing platforms are already popular with local fishing families and touristsm, plus they will be accessible to children, families, retirees and to the disabled.

This Pioneer River artificial reef tender has been award to SMC Marine.

Work will be completed in two stages, with Stage One to be constructed at the end of April at Bridge Road and Brisbane Street.

Stage Two off the end of Carlyle Street will be completed in early May. This initiative is part of the Councils recreational fishing strategy to increase the economic contribution of recreational fishing.

The long-term outcome is to help the Mackay region gain recognition throughout Australia as a premier fishing destination.

1962 Valiant named in honour of owner’s father REYLENE McCallum from North Mackay says she plans to have a heap of fun with her 1962 E Series Chrysler Valiant.

Ms McCallum plans on naming her car Stanly in honour of her late father, who passed away from dementia last year.

She said his passing inspired her to buy the car two weeks ago, as it reminded her of her beloved dad.

She used some of the money from the sale of his house to help with the purchase of the car.

The car was purchased from Newcastle, New South Wales and had a friend look at it first, befiore she flew down and had a look at the car herself.

She then had it shipped up to Queensland.

Reylene descibes Stanly as being nice to drive and very photogenic to look at, saying many people turn around and look at the beautiful car.

She said she has driven as far as to Slade Point, where she visits her friends and shows off her pride and joy.

However, she had no plans of turning Stanly into a daily use car but was considering using it for weddings and proms.

Only 10,000 of these cars were believed to be made in Australia, where they werre used mainly on the speedway.

It is estimated that only a third of the cars have survived, due to many having been wrecked in their races.

MORE than 350 motorcross riders from all over Queensland competed in Mackay’s Central Queensland Motocross Championships over the weekend.

Mackay Junior Motocross President Aaron Ross said the MPE Suspension championships “turned out way bigger than expected and was held over both days all weekend.

“Normally we expect about 250 competitors and we were delighted when 350 riders turned up to compete,” Mr Ross said.

“Over the two days there (were) four rounds. Two rounds on Saturday and two on Sunday,” Mr Ross said.

The huge event was held over

the weekend and saw riders starting to arrive as early as Thursday and Friday night.

“Nominations closed on Wednesday but then after that there was still a few that were still trying to get in after Wednesday,” he said.

Once the competition kicked of it was full throttle with the sound of motorbikes screaming to life, cheers from fans for riders leaping over jumps and ripping through courses.

It wasn’t all smiles though, with the first casualty of the day being a rider who had fallen of this bike and broke his wrist.

“This is our first race of the year here as a CQ (event). We also

have the Queensland titles on July 10 and 11 and between that we have about three to four club days from now till October,” he said.

“This is a series and it will be held over five different places around Central Queensland. The presentation for this series will be held on Sunday afternoon but the winner of the series will be (named) after the last ride of the series.”

The series will continue with the second round being held on March 27 and 28 at Yeppoon. The third round will be held on May 1 and 2 in Biloela. The fourth will be held on May 15 and16 in Rockhampton with the fifth round on June 19 and 20 in Emerald.

UPCOMING Mackay Mixed Martial Arts fighter Peter Templer is ready to step up onto the world stage.

Coach David Garnham from MMA Mackay said his star athlete was currently preparing for the upcoming Eternal MMA event which will be televised worldwide tomorrow night.

“The...Eternal MMA, which is the biggest MMA show in Australia, will be (held tomorrow) on the Gold Coast.” said coach Garnham.

Peter, 23, will be flying with Coach Garnham to take on Jamie Sporne, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt, who fights out of Brisbane.

“Peter has more than earned his right to have a fight on that show,” Coach Garnham said.

The fight will be televised to the world on streaming site UFC Fight Pass.

“UFC Fight Pass goes all

Heading into the fight, the coach said he believes Peter has a very strong chance of victory.

The upcoming fighter holds a brown belt in jiu-jitsu, having started with the club when he was 15. Peter is looking forward to the bout but is not underestimating his more experienced opponent.

“My opponent is defiantly talented, but I think I can hang with him,” Peter said.

His coach said Peter will be moving up a weight class for this bout.

“Peter will be fighting in Welterweight with his last professional fight at lightweight, so he will be moving up a weight class.

He’s grown quite a bit since being a kid,” Garnham said. “Welterweight be 77.1 kilos and he’s hanging with the top guys in Aus-

tralia. Peter or any of our fighters have kind of the same type of fighting regime. They train at the gym five nights a week,” the coach said.

These athletes train in different styles of fighting and being mixed martial arts they perform various strikes as well as wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu along with strength and conditioning combining.

“It’s been really good at fight camp with a solid eight weeks of training, mostly twice a day, feeling fit,” Peter said.

Despite the stereotypes around those who participate in the fighting arts, these athletes have discipline, commitment and an understanding of strategy.

Another upcoming bout for the gym will feature Jaden Dalrymple fighting for the Australian amateur featherweight title and coastal combat.

South Sharks’ Austin a real team player

By JACOB CUMNER GETTING to know local legends is hard and trying to get in touch with them is even harder.

Mackay Local News was fortunate enough to speak to South Sharks Cricket club’s Shaun Austin who has a very busy schedule.

Shaun (pictured right) is a former winner of The Player of the Year Award at the annual senior cricket. He is also in the running for this year’s award due to his batting prowess during the current season.

When asked about how he got into cricket whilst growing up here, Shaun said he actually started off as a rugby league boy from a very young age.

“I didn’t get into cricket until I was 10,” he said, adding that it was a friend of his who got him into the sport.

Shaun has been with the South Sharks Cricket Club for around

20 years and his love for cricket hasn’t faded.

The star cricketer has been tipped by many as the favourite to win The Player of the Year Award at the annual senior cricket.

However, he remains modest about his achievements.

“I don’t know about favourite,” he said, “as there any many worthy winners in our competition at present. But yes, I first won it in around 2007, then again in 2016.”

When asked whether he had plans to go further in his cricking

career Shaun said he had no further plans.

“Unless an opportunity too good to refuse comes along, which is highly unlikely at my age,” he laughed.

Shaun’s favourite match of the year was his team’s win against Walkerston.

“Definitely the win against Walkerston,” he said. “We played a really good brand of cricket that day, both with bat and ball.

“I just missed out on the hundred that day but the result was what it is all about!

“It had been a long time between wins over Scrubby (Walkerston) and it brought emotions out of the handful of us that have been through the good and the tough times over the last five years. It was a long night!”

Shaun’s most memorable experience while playing for Souths was “winning premierships and celebrating them properly!

“And also the day night game

vs Norths when we were bowled out for 60 and bowled them out for 21. Tom Bugeja’s 5 for 0, including a hat trick, was awesome to be part of,” he said.

Shaun’s family, whilst not being cricket fanatics, have shown some interst in the sport.

“I have a couple of girls at home who don’t mind swinging their cricket bats around at home,” he said.

“They have also given me some catching practise hacking the ball off the T-ball stand,” he said.

Shaun happily attributes his success for this year to “fitness, strength, hard work and determination to lift our team from the foot of the ladder.

“I’ve got a great team of blokes around me and helping them to succeed personally drives me as well.

“I can’t score runs without building partnerships with the lads,” he said.

Walkerston up against Brothers for finals WALKERSTON Cricket Club will challenge Minor Premiers Brothers for the 2020/2021 Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal Poole Cup tomorrow afternoon at Harrup Park.

Play is scheduled to commence at 2:30pm in what is expected to be a closely fought match.

Walkerston waltzed into the grand final for each of the four grades of Mackay Senior Cricket with solid wins last weekend.

In first grade, Walkerston’s bowlers, led by the leg spin of Joel Bock (four wickets for 30 runs) and the left arm of Adam Knezevic (three wickets for 17

runs), bowled Norths out for a dismal total of 86. Walkerston were able to chase that total down with ease in their 21st over for the loss of only three wickets. Sam Vassallo scored 42 runs.

In second grade, Walkerston defeated Sarina. While the loss will be a disappointment for Sarina, they can be well pleased with reaching the semi-finals in both the one-day and T20 competitions this season.

Walkerston will now face Norths for the second-grade trophy. Play is scheduled to commence at 1:00pm tomorrow at Harrup Park. Pioneer Valley

Green and Walkerston will meet in the Grand Final in third grade after they triumphed in their semi-finals.

Pioneer Valley Green defeated Brothers Whites by 68 runs. Cody Filewood top scored with 77 for Pioneer Valley.

In the other semi-final, Walkerston defeated Norths by eight wickets. For Walkerston, Liam Newbery took three wickets for 16 runs and Lance Ryan scored 39 runs.

In fourth grade, Pinnacle will host Walkerston tomorrow after Walkerston accounted for an under-strength Eastern Swans.

Clash of the League Titans The first Queensland rugby league match kicks off this weekend when the Mackay Cutters face the Redcliffe Dolphins.

Gates open at 3pm with the BHP Premiership Goldstars facing off against Capras Trial followed by the Intrust Super Cup (ISC).

Cutters Coach Michael Crawley said, “The women’s game kicks of at 4pm and then the ISC game starts at 6pm. This is the first competition for our boys who are very keen to get out and put on a good display.”

The importance of this roundone match cannot be understated with the Cutters going up against such heavy hitters as Redcliffe.

“Round one is important for us,” Crawly said. “Redcliffe is considered to be one of the high flying teams in ISC this year.

“They also have an affiliation with the New Zealand Warriors so we are expecting them to have anything up to nine players in the Warriors in their line up this weekend.

“It will be a really good test for our boys up against very experienced and formidable side,” the coach said.

The Cutters likewise have aces up their selves with young players associated with the Cowboys.

Coach Michael Crawley “We have Cowboy-allocated players this week - Emry Pere, Shane Wright, Ben Condon, Murray Taulagi and Michael Bell.

They will all travel down and play with the team from the Cowboys’ camp.

“They are part of allocation with the Cowboys and how often we get them will depend on how well they are playing for us,” the coach said.

“We are all hope they play well enough to be considered as part of the NRL team Cowboys.

“I am really excited because it give us an opportunity to introduce some new boys to the ISC

competition and help them with their debuts,” said the coach.

Shane Wright has being playing with the Cowboys but is on the roaster to play this weekend “Its great getting that experience back. We will need that because obviously Redcliffe are with the New Zealand Warriors and they will get a strong contingent back from the NRL, so that will even itself out, The coach said his team were an inexperienced group with 11 players debuting this weekend in round one.

“Of those, we have three boys under 21 Josh Smith, Blake Paskins and Aidan Beard who have come up through our junior system, through the Mackay system. Now they are getting a chance to run out in ISC and get their debut against Redcliffe this weekend as under 21s.”

Crawly said that the team’s trial games up tp now have only been a part of getting ready for this weekend’s game.

“So we have spoken as a squad a bit about this (being) a beginning for us,” he said. “This is our chance to show the fans and supporters what sort of team we are gonna be. And it wont be decided over this weekend but over the weeks to come.”

City Club bowls a real treat A LARGE crowd of spectators was treated to some top class bowls at City Club over the weekend when eight teams contested the finals of the Mackay District Mixed Pairs.

There were some clear-cut wins in the quarter finals with Karli Burns and Rick Dunn beating Anne-Marie and Cooper Whitestyles 27-12, Di Faulkner (sub for Ashlee Knight) and Vince McSherry defeating Karina Dunn and Kees Struik 24-9 and Anna Forsyth and Barry Cook scoring a 27-12 win over Gail Meng and Rob Harris.

The fourth game was extremely tight throughout with Carol Savage and Barry Brown scoring

two shots on the final end to win 17-14 against Bertha and Bruce Archer.

Savage and Brown had another battle in their semi-final against Di Faulkner and Vince McSherry with the scores locked at 23all with one end to play but they withstood the pressure once again to take the match 25-23 and Burns and Dunn played very consistent bowls against Forsyth and Cook to win 25-7.

The final was played between the four close friends Burns and Dunn and Savage and Brown.

There was nothing between the pairs for two thirds of the match but the consistent draw bowls

from Burns and Dunn saw them eventually take the final 24-14.

Karli Burns and Rick Dunn will now represent the Mackay District against Leichhardt in the group final in August.

The Mackay representative side travel to Townsville this weekend to contest the Challenge Cup against North Queensland, Tropical Far North Queensland and the Atherton Tablelands.

The side is Paul Foot, Wade Vidulich, Rick Dunn, Peter Blackburn; Nathan Dodds, Steve Boyce, Steve Ridolfi, Wayne Handley; Steve Mau, Les Rodgers, Barry Brown, Wade Cranston.

Good scores on the dartboard Nth Bowls

One big carnival nugget’s notes racing columnist

FANS were out in force at Moranbah Race Club’s big Autumn carnival meeting at Treasure Park last Saturday.

There was a strong crowd in attendance showing the community still has a strong passion for racing which has been severely interrupted by Covid -19 in the state’s coal capital.

President John Juhas was pleased with crowd numbers and more than impressed with the effort that the men and women of Moranbah put into the highly competitive fashions on the field. Over 40 gallopers faced the starters over the 6 races on the program.

The first race on the program was taken out by Emerald trained galloper from the Glenda Bell yard in Emerald who legged Rockhampton apprentice Cody (chip) Collis aboard Isis Jectile ($1.90) who lit the Park track alight.

The Bell galloper has a real liking for the sandy loamy surfaces and will continue to be a strong force on the country circuit. The King of Treasure Park, John Manzelmann took out the richest race on the program the maiden handicap over 1000 metres, with Struman ($3.00) who was ridden

by Trinity Bannon leading all the way winning by a widening 4.5 lengths with Setlin Sage getting home well for Thangool Trainer Damien Rideout ($3.50 ) in the last 75 metres.

For second placing Glenda Bell’s runner Think I Can Careen stuck on well for third placing. The open plate featured some of country racings biggest names in the open

sprinter ranks including the longtime heavyweight champ of the bush the locally trained 9 year old Fabs Cowboy made it a one act affair taking out the open sprint over 1170 metres, with Angela Jones in the sadddle.

She rode the bush champ an absolute treat in the first leg of a double with the Johnson stable.

The win made it 42 wins and 21 placings from 101 starts and $321 475 in prize money.

The most impressive popular win of the day came in Ancient Echoes ($3.50) who took out the benchmark 60 over the 1400 metres for the Moranbah magician Bevan Johnson after a slow start for its new stable.

Ancient Echoes made it two in a row leading from start to finish with Apprentice Angela Jones giving it a peach of a ride. Ancient echoes looks set to progress to the country cup circuit and a possible tilt at the Alpha cup is on the cards as Ancient Echoes is raced by several Alpha racing identities.

Mackay trainer Ian Shaw made the 400 kilometre round trip down the Peak Downs highway to support the meeting and provided young apprentice Cody Collis a day he won’t forget which included a treble. Shaw and Collis combined to take out the feature event, the $10000 Moranbah Workers Club Community cup over 1550 metres.

Collis suled Stars don’t Rust ($3.00) out of the barriers to sit just just off the pace in a perfectly timed ride from Collis who made a mid race move to hit the front a long way out to draw away by a widening 6.5 lengths with Bevan Johnson’s runner Barbican $3.00 hanging on for 2nd.

All of which topped off a great day of country racing.

THERE were some good darts played and a bit of rustiness at Whitsunday Darts last weekend.

Airlie beach darts club representative Jamie Maher said, “A few players also spent a bit of extra time on the practice board to right a few wrongs from the previous week, myself included” Three players sit on top of the ladder on six points each, with Gene Birse leading the way just ahead of Jamie Woods and Joe Wilson, courtesy of leg difference.

The top four is completed by Seumas Rose on five points.

First Qld boxing bouts a big hit

BOXING Qld kicked their year off on the weekend with a tournament in Ayr at the Burdekin Police Citizens Youth Club.

It was hosted by Alex and Kylie Lawson, with around 15 clubs in attendance and just under 50 boxers on show. It proved to be a great kickstart to the boxing year for Boxing Queensland and in particular boxing in the North. Clubs travelled all the way from Brisbane, Mt Isa, Cloncurry, Dysart, Gladstone, Middlemount, Blackwater, Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton and Mackay.

The team from O’Malley’s Mackay Boxing Club had five boxers ready and raring to go, all of them matched up with very even opponents.

Mackay’s team consisted of Austin Armitage, their youngest boxer at 11 years-old, Memphis Algie ,12, Macen Algie,14, Uriel Pearson, 26, and Jessie

King,36. Unfortunately the club wasn’t able to match Macen and Jessie in a formal bout but did manage to get them an exhibition bout. The other three boxers were matched up in competitive bouts and had a hard task in front of them.

Austin the club’s youngest and newest competitive boxer was matched up against a young boxer from Townsville. Austin went out and did as he was instructed and stuck to the game plan.

Memphis won all three of his rounds and the bout in what was a very good display of controlled boxing.

The team’s last boxer, and biggest at 90kg to jump in, was Uriel. He found himself up against a fit opponent who was keen to get in and have a go.

It was a closely fought match but Uriel managed to take the bout by TKO.

Plenty of good pool programs IF YOU’RE keen to get into the pool, Masters Swimming Club has access to a number of programs to participate in without leaving town.

These events are year-long and offer a number of alternatives to suit individual’s abilities.

Current featured programs are Endurance 1000 and Million Metres.

Endurance 1000 is designed for all swimmers who enjoy swimming the longer distances.

The program consists of a number of distances and strokes starting at 400m.

Points are awarded on times achieved and the ultimate goal is to encourage swimmers to achieve maximum points in all events in a calendar year. A total of 62 swims

are possible with distances 400 and 800m in all strokes.

This includes Individual Medley repeated up to five times and the 1500m 30, 45 and 60 minute swims in Free, Back and Breaststroke.

Million Metres is not a competitive program but provides recognition for individual progressive milestones based on recorded & validated distances.

Swimmers receive awards from one through to 20 million metres in total distance completed in the pool.

For instance, if you swim three times a week and average 2km a session it would take three years and two months roughly to get to the first milestone. More details can be found on the Masters Swimming Queensland site.

Local fighter to go global MMA athlete’s bout to be televised worldwide

LOCAL Mixed Martial Arts ffigher Peter Templer, who fights out of Mackay MMA gym, is set for the fight of his career tomorrow night when he takes on Brisbane’s Jamie Sporne, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt.
