Cop assaulted THE Mackay Magistrates Court has remanded a 31-yearold Gladstone man in custody for contravention of a Domestic Violence Order, aggravated assault of a police officer, assault causing grievous bodily harm, common assault, obstructing police, breach of bail, plus entering a property with criminal intent. The man will be held in custody until his trial later this month.

Drug driving A 29-YEAR-old Proserpine man pleaded guilty in Mackay Magistrates Court and was fined $750 for driving under the influence of both methamphetamine and cannabis on March 19. Dyllan William Clarkson had his driving licence suspended until March 15 next year.

The Mackay Magistrates Court was told that this latest offence was Clarkson’s fourth illegal drug conviction in four years.

Magistrate Hartigan said that Clarkson clearly had a long relationship with drugs and that if he kept going, he was facing a high fine or a possible prison sentence.

Needle charge A 38-YEAR-old Mackay woman appeared in the Mackay Magistrates Court charged with possessing methamphetamines, plus failure to dispose of a hypodermic needle and other illegal drug taking equipment. Crystal Michelle-Jayde Dwyer has been remanded on bail to reappear in the Mackay Magistrates Court in July.

New player to slash NQ home insurance A NEW player in the North Queensland insurance market is promising to cut premium rates by as much as 70 percent.

The company has muscled in on the scene after watching Australian companies hike premiums by up to 300 percent in the past few years – and it is making no secret of its intention to undercut the traditional insurers to give customers a better deal.

Steel Pacific Insurance Brokers, general manager Glenn Sales said the company, Sure, is underwritten by the large Massachusetts based Liberty Specialty Market.

“Sure’s home insurance covers our normal catastrophes of floods, fire and cyclones,” Mr Sales said.

“Sure has the capacity to cover a significantly larger portion of the North Queensland home insurance market because they are backed by a major US insurance underwriter.

“This means that their new home and apartment insurance policies will suit about 70 percent of North Queenslanders and importantly, they are not cut-price or bottom-end insurance policies.

“For example, Mackay business couple Kristy and Glen Peace have just saved almost $4000 a year, or three quarters of past annual insurance costs on their $478,000 home by changing, and this also includes $31,500 contents insurance.

“The couple - who owns carpet business, Focus On Flooring Extra, in both Mackay and Proserpine - paid $1771 after rejecting quotes from QBE for $5735, IAL for $5,33, CGU for $5019 and Holland for $4004.”

Mr Sales said the insurance quotations represented a constant pattern and were not just a one-off.

“Sure has really aggressive pricing and interestingly, they are only targeting the North Queensland’s home insurance market where insurance costs have really skyrocketed,” he said.

They have only been in the North Queensland market for 18 months and it is buying market share to spread the risk with a wider insurance base.

“It also raises the question, if a US backed Queensland insurance company can do it, then why can’t Australian companies also cut their charges.

“Interestingly, Sure does not require a $10 billion federal government insurance underwriting pool to cut its prices and clearly, there is a need for government regulation of home insurance costs, just like health insurance.”

Mackay Local News has already reported that the Federal Government will negotiate cuts to North Queensland home, apartment and unit insurance costs, after agreeing to provide a $10 billion insurance underwriting pool, to cover or protect Australian insurance companies from paying out on floods, fire and cyclones.

Job prospects on gold dig UP TO 300 new jobs are set to be created by a junior mining company, as it eyes three new mines in the near future.

The Ruddygore, Ravenswood and Dittmer golds mines are located around the Queensland Gold belt, where the third is located at Proserpine.

Ballymore Resources are eyeing these three prospective mines for the Queensland gold belt and recently had an initial public offering.

Ballymore Resources is focused on exploration of Northeast Queensland, which is known to have Gold, copper and other base

metals deposits.

Non-executive chairman Nick Jorss says the initial public offering (IPO) was managed by Morgans.

He said this is the process of a private company becoming public, where they sell their shares on the stock exchange The IPO for Ballymore Resources will finish around late July to early August.

“We’re still going through that (regulatory) process, so we appointed Morgans as our broker and we’re running through the IPO process about getting listed,” Mr Jorss said.

He believes Queensland has missed out on some great opportunities, compared to states like Western Australia.

After the IPO process has finished, Mr Jorss said the exploration phase would begin, which could

lead to 30 jobs being created.

Mr Jorss explained Exploration as the process of collecting information to analysed what mineral deposits are at a location, along with determining the economic feasbility of their extraction.

Once exploration has finished, he said the three mines would then be able to open and offer 300 jobs each.

“There’s some fantastic deposits there (at the three mines), so we’re joining adjacent to a number of those,” he said.

“Ravenswood, we got a 70 million ounce gold province between Charters Towers and Ravenswood that it’s sitting in the middle of,” he said.

“There’s an awful lot of a large deposits that has been mined historically, but has not had a lot of work done since the 1990’s.”

He explained that copper could be using for the wiring in lithium batteries.

Businesses to benefit from BHP terms

The decision, announced by BHP this week, will benefit small and medium enterprises, as well as traditional owner and indigenous businesses. throughout the country.

More broadly, the change will impact about 4000 suppliers operating out of 31 countries throughout the miner’s global operating footprint in Australia, North, Central and South America and the Caribbean.

The move follows BHP’s implementation of seven-day payment terms (down from 30-day terms) during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It also follows implementation of the Payment Times Reporting Act (2020) which gave rise to the Payment Times Reporting Scheme. Under the scheme, companies with an annual turnover of $100Million or more are required

to report their business payment times.

Greater Whitsunday Alliance CEO Kylie Porter welcomed the decision to continue these reduced payment terms, saying it reflected the company’s ongoing acknowledgement of the importance of the local communities within its operational footprint.

“This is a wonderful decision by BHP,” Ms Porter said.

“It is recognition that the role of small business is critical.

“In a region such as ours, most businesses are small to medium enterprises and they just don’t have the huge, great big deep pockets of bigger companies.”

Ms Porter said the decision – which would see payment of invoices within seven days of them being approved by BHP – would help cash flow and better position businesses in their planning, as well as better enabling growth and possibly increase opportunities to employ.

“We are basically no longer financing the activities of a very big corporation. This will improve cashflow, improve the capacity to employ and it will allow businesses to plan for effectively.”

Drizzly days, the odd storm or two and heavy intermittent showers have kept temperatures mostly mild – and all of us all guessing - during this past week.

Temps overnight are expected to dip to two degrees at Eungella, and three to four degrees out around Clermont on Sunday and Monday, with

some slightly warmer conditions expected closer to the coast.

It’ll still be worth digging out the Uggs though, with five to six degrees expected around Dysart, Moranbah and Nebo, seven to eight around Proserpine, slightly warmer with lows of nine degrees in Bowen and around the MackaySarina-Northern Beaches areas, eight degrees around Calen and Narpi.

The cooler temperatures will come from clearer skies and while it might make it a bit harder getting up in the morning, it’s great for the cane and sugar content!

Trial aborted after juror error THE trial of a stepfather accused of raping a five-year-old girl has been aborted because a juror approached and spoke to the accused outside the court.

Mackay District Court Judge Ian Dearden, said he was hugely disappointed that a trial, costing tens of thousands of dollars, had to be cancelled.

“I clearly indicated yesterday to the jurors that they were not to discuss the trial,” Judge Dearden said.

“I confess that I didn’t think it necessary to tell jurors not to speak to the accused.”

However at the start of the second day of the rape trial, defence barrister Kim Bryson told the District Court that her client said that a juror approached him when he was sitting outside the court.

“The juror allegedly said to the accused, ‘are you travelling ok, are you ok?’.”

The Mackay District Court was told that the accused rapist did not

respond and immediately reported this contact to his barrister and to instructing solicitors, Fisher Dore.

Barrister Bryson submitted to the District Court that although this was of concern it had not affected the trial proceeding.

However the crown prosecutor, Nicole Friedewald successfully made an application for a mistrial, as she said it demonstrated prejudice at the start of the trial.

The District Court was told that it was unclear if this contact

was passed onto other jurors or was said in the presence of other jurors.

But by approaching the defendant, it at least suggested that the juror was favourably disposed to the defendant by speaking to him.

Judge Dearden said it was his concern that a juror had spoken to the defendant.

“I gave a strong direction to the jury yesterday not to discuss this trial and this should not have occurred. I conclude that the whole

jury must be discharged and the Crown’s application for the mistrial is granted.

“I will not make an inquiry into who it was that has caused this significant situation.

“It saddens me as these things shouldn’t have happened.

“The jury system is fundamentally important and a judge must ensure that the jury is fair.”

The Glenella man has pleaded not guilty to one count of alleged digital rape early in 2009.

Call for carers to take part in dementia study MACKAY, Isaac and Whitsunday residents living with – and caring for – a loved-one with Dementia will tell you, first-hand, that it is one of the most gruelling and isolating roles you can fill.

That’s exactly why CQUniversity Master of Clinical Psychology student is calling on those carers to come forward and be part of an important research project.

is researching how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the caregiver experience.

Ms Chen is inviting carers of people with dementia from throughout Northern Queensland to take part in an online survey to help support caregivers into the future.

Ms Chen is seeking primary caregivers over the age of 18 to complete a confidential 20-minute online survey. You can link to this survey by scanning the QR Code attached to

this story with your Smart Phone. Participation in a follow-up, 10-minute confidential survey, two weeks later is optional and will place participants in the draw to win a $50 Coles-Myer giftcard.

“This research will guide us to help caregivers in the future, and may benefit the wider caregiver community,” Ms Chen said.

The findings will be made available by request, via CQ University in December 2021.

INVESTIGATORS are appealing for assistance after four separate businesses across Mackay were targeted by thieves on the weekend leaving a costly trail of destruction. Around 12:00 am on June 13 a white sedan has been used to ram rear roller doors of a business on Trade Court in Mount Pleasant. Damage caused to the roller doors has allowed for the two occupants of the vehicle to gain entry and briefly search inside. Nothing has been confirmed as stolen at this time. A further attempt has been made to damage two side windows with bricks – but insufficient damage has been caused to allow for entry to be made.

Breath tested

ON THE evening of June 12, officers from the Whitsunday Police Station were conducting patrols of the Cannonvale area when they observed a white Toyota Corolla had travelled up the curb of the roundabout at the intersection of Shute Harbour Road and Pandanus Drive. Police conducted inquiries in relation to the incident and located the female driver at a nearby residence. Police subjected the woman to a breath test. The woman returned a positive reading and was transported to the Whitsunday Police Station where she provided a breath test with a reading of 0.193 BAC. She will appear in court.

Honour for ANZAC

WINNER: THe red corner takes ta bout at the charity fight night

Going toe to toe for charity Moranbah Boxing and Sporting Club spent seven weeks training local community members in a Boxing Camp with the goal of helping them to become fitter, to build confidence and skills to be able to participate in a charity fight night.

There were 22 local members out of the 45 signed up along with two Mackay young men, who put their hand up to get in the ring.

The Charity Fight Night was held in Memory of Ethan Stevens with the permission of his family, with all money raised to go to the Physiotherapy department at the Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, a very special department which was very helpful to Ethan in treatment and recovery.

It was a huge job putting this event together, with all staff and family volunteering their

time on the night and commitment from trainers throughout the camp.

With the effort and participation from the boxers, the club was absolutely blown away by the total funds raised being $16,019.34, which will all go to the charity.

The club is so grateful for everyone being involved in this event. So much support and love from our community.

A SARINA street will be renamed Connolly Street in honour of an ANZAC who fought in the First World War. Peter Connolly (pictured) was an ANZAC soldier born in Sarina and served in the Australian Imperial Force.

The Sarina Museum and Mackay Family History Society were approached by the Mackay Regional Council to provide names of ANZAC soldiers.

They soon settled upon one name: Peter Connolly.

“The enlistment records of Peter Conolly show that, at the age of 27 years, Peter Connolly joined the Australian Imperial Force on April 1, 1916,” the report said.

“He served in the Reinforcements and 9th Field Company Engineers and returned to Australia on September 8, 1919.”

The Connolly Family are a historically significant local family, who were pioneers in the Sarina Area.

They pioneered farming for the Sarina Area and obtained a land claim at Louisa Creek.

Brooks Road West residents voiced their frustrations to the Mackay Regional Council about having two similarly named streets.

In a June 9 report, Mackay regional councillors discussed the possibility of renaming Brooks Road West to Connolly Street to reduce confusion.

This is because the Sarina area has two streets with similar names: Brooks Road and Brooks

Road West. he report explained that emergency services had difficulties finding the correct address, along with mail being misdelivered.

“This would improve the provision of emergency services and goods and services to residents,” the report said. “(In addition, this would) reduce the subsequent risks associated with the similar street names.”

“Brooks Road West turns off the Bruce Highway, on the northern approach to Sarina. After the intersection with Sarina Beach Road, Brooks Road then commences,” the report said.

“This has caused confusion for residents, due to the close proximity of these streets and...both having duplicated street numbers.”

Council contacted local homeowners and businesses about renaming Brooks Road West.

The responses were overwhelmingly in favour of the name change to Connolly Street.

Doggone it, adopt a lonely pet MACKAY Animal Rescue Society’s (MARS) monthly dog adoption day is returning this month in a new location.

They will now be at i-Dogz K9 Training Services at 20 Evans Ave, North Mackay from 9am-11am, with the first on June 27.

MARS will beshowing off their beautiful puppies and older dogs waiting for their forever homes. There will also be a BBQ out the front.

MARS have noticed a steady increase in pet surrenders over the last year and they currently have around 35 dogs in care.

Not only are the adoption days a great chance for the public to view all animals in one location, it is also an opportunity for anyone interested in fostering to go along and chat to carers about their experiences to see if it is something they are interested in.

MARS are always desperate for foster carers. The more carers they have, the more animals they can take into care.

MARS also holds kitten adoption days regularly at Petstock, North Mackay, with another one this Sunday from 10-2.

Local hotels, motels receive energy help

GOLDEN TIMES: The horse drawn buggy before it moved up to Mackay

Men’s Shed goes all buggy BEACONSFIELD Road Men’s Shed are currently working on restoring a buggy intended for a 150 year reunion at Salt Bush Park.

The buggy is being restored at the request of a family who own Saltbush Park Station, a homestead located near Nebo.

It was shipped to Beaconsfield to be restored.

Shed Coordinators Bruce Kearney and Ray Gould said retirement can be challenging for men, but often uses wood working projects to bring men together.

Mr Kearney said many men are

looking to connect with others, where he emphasised their motto was “blokes building communities”.

“Everybody loves it mate.

They’re a great group of blokes – they all get on so well,” Mr Kearney said.

“It’s made a big difference to them: they got somewhere to go.”

Mr Gould explained having an avenue to talk and connect with like-minded men made a huge difference to their daily lives.

“It gives them that social contact you lose when you leave work. (This is) providing a suit-

able area, where retired people can come and enjoy everyone else’s company.” Mr Gould said.

Mr Kearney said this men’s shed is an outreach of the Church of Christ, where their projects have greatly helped the Mackay community. Adding to this, Mr Kearney said the men’s shed has given Mackay’s retirees a new purpose and lease in life.

“It’s really about having a safe environment for elderly men to come along and enjoy each others company and do a bit of work on different projects of their own,” Mr Kearney said.

FUNDING: Local motels are set to benefit from the Government’s energy support SUPPORT from the Morrison Government has allowed Mackay’s motels and hotels to cut their energy costs.

This support comes from the $10.2 million Hotel Energy Uplift Program.

Island Properties director Frank Romeo said he applied for a grant to help reduce energy costs.

Mr Romeo said, “It’s great – it’s fantastic” the opportunities this grant provides Tropic Coast Motel.

“The energy cost up there – when you got them the clientele coming in – it’s running 24 hours a day,” Mr Romeo Said.

“Whether it be summer or winter, you either got heating or air conditioning, the electricity bills get exorbitantly high.

He said he hoped this grant would enable them to “reduce their electricity account quite substantially”.

“With the new energy saving type one inverters, they can

sense heating and cooling at various stages and what people do too they put them too maximum (temperature) and it doesn’t work properly,” he said.

“We still got, in some rooms, still got some of the old boxes... they’re not really energy efficient.”

He said he planned on spending some of the grant on modern air conditioning, but was currently waiting to to discuss installation.

PLASTICS BATTLE: Margaret Burgess uses her art to make a plea for people to take a stance against recycled plastics.

Fantastic artistic plastic

By CHARLIE PAYNE MACKAY artist Margaret Burgess is using her art in the battle against what she sees as one of the world’s major environmental issues – plastic pollution.

She says nature and the battle against plastics are the key motivators for her creation of beautiful things.

She uses recycled plastics in jewellery and sculptures, which she sees as a great way to engage people in the conversation about one of the world’s major environmental issues.

Margaret has recently joined about 50 crafters who display

their creations at the Sarina Arts and Crafts Centre, and she also has artwork and jewellery at the Artist Collective at Caneland and Artspace Mackay.

“Plastics and the environmental damage they are causing are a major concern to me,” she said.

“Nature and life itself have been a constant source of inspiration for me, and I am now working with a lot of recycled plastics in my jewellery and artwork.

“Using plastics in art encourages people to engage in this major environmental issue and to look at their own relationship with plastics.”

Margaret said she had been on

a creative journey for as long as she could remember.

“As a teenager I used to do portraits of my friends, and I picked up a paint brush again when my children were small. My eldest is now 40.

“I create original artwork, sculptures prints and jewellery.”

After attending TAFE for many years, when she learnt various painting mediums, sculpture and printmaking, she attended art classes with the late Clem Forbes.

“Clem was an interesting tutor. He taught you how to think creatively, took us right out of our comfort zones and inspired us to be unique.”

SERENE: Nature, beautiful. Dams, not so beautiful

FOR more than a decade Mackay Conservation Group has been voicing concerns about the proposed Urannah Dam that will flood some of the few remaining pristine river systems in Central Queensland.

This dam was first put forward way back in the 1960s. An economic analysis back then found that the dam didn’t make sense. It still doesn’t.

A review of the preliminary business case for Urannah Dam in 2020 found that the dam will only produce 26 cents in benefits for our community for every dollar it costs. We will be much worse off if this dam goes ahead.

Even before the dam is built, taxpayers money has been used to fund a whole lot of work for this privately owned dam. The federal government has contributed $13 million towards feasibility studies, that’s equivalent to more than $100 being taken out of the pocket of every man, woman and child in the Mackay region.

The owners of this private dam don’t want to stop at $13 million, however. They also want the taxpayer to foot the bill for up to half of the $600 million construction costs. If Urannah

Dam does go ahead there will be severe impacts downstream. The proposed dam would be the second largest in Queensland, only surpassed

by Burdekin Falls Dam. Records show that during Cyclone Debbie nearly 4,000 cubic metres of water flowed down the river at Urannah Creek every second. That water made its way downstream into the Bowen and Burdekin Rivers. Meanwhile less than one tenth of that volume flowed past the the Burdekin Falls Dam wall.

Some people may think that water was wasted but ask any cane farmer in the Lower Burdekin and they’ll tell you that the water went to good use. It recharged the groundwater aquifers that farmers depend upon for irrigation. It also kept the saltwater that creeps in from the ocean at bay.

The flood flows also produced benefits for wetlands that are so important in the lifecycle of fish and other marine species.

There are better uses of taxpayers money than funding a new private dam project in the Burdekin Basin. One of them would be providing farmers in the Lower Burdekin with new equipment to enable more efficient irrigation techniques.

As much water could be saved through water efficiencies as Urannah Dam would make available and would cost far less than a new dam.

‘NO WAY. You will not make Australia home.’

This was the key message of an international media and marketing campaign that the Liberal National Government ran as part of a suite of measures to stem the flow of illegal boat arrivals into our country.

Under the Rudd and Gillard Labor governments, people smuggling was a roaring business and illegal boat arrivals were in their tens of thousands. Sadly, about 1200 people who got on leaky boats to get to our country lost their lives at sea.

That was until the Liberals and Nationals took office under then-Prime Minister Tony Abbott who, along with his then Immigration Minister Scott Morrison, ramped up tough border security measures that stopped the boats.

The critics said it couldn’t be done but it was done and lives have been saved because of it.

It may be difficult for some to see how a deci-

sion on the Murugappan family of Sri Lanka, who were temporarily residing in Biloela, could undermine all of this. But it could.

While images of the young Tharnicaa Murugappan laying sick in a hospital bed may be emotive (and good fodder for our activist media), it does not change the fact that the family in question are not refugees.

As tough as it is, if we allow one family - again, who are not refugees - to make Australia home because they had children born here, then we undermine a key message of our successful campaign to stop the boats: ‘No way. You will not make Australia home.’

The horde of refugee lawyers making money out of the illegal immigration racket will then send the signal to other would-be illegal immigrants that if you get to Australia and have a child here then you can stay forever.

The people smugglers will be back in business and the boats will start again, leading to lives lost at sea, including the lives of young children like Tharnicaa Murugappan.

This is why we cannot afford to undermine our strong border protection regime.

Highland fling is a beautiful thing INTERNATIONAL Dance Affair hosted their annual Highland and Irish Dancing competitions in Mackay on the weekend at North Mackay State High School Hall.

Competitors from Cairns, Townsville, Ayr, Mackay, Rockhampton and Brisbane competed for the prestigious Title and Premiership events, section dances and groups.

Jacqueline Wilson from Cairns was the Highland Dancing Adjudicator for the Highland Dancing

Competition on Saturday and Breeda Peirce ADCRG was the Irish Dancing Adjudicator for the Irish Dancing Competition on Sunday.

Both adjudicators enjoyed the friendly atmosphere of the competition and the high standard of dancing from the dancers across our state.

Principal of International Dance Affair, Sandra Danastas said it was a fantastic display of Highland and Irish Dancing throughout

the weekend and it would not be possible to run an event of this magnitude without the sponsorship of our local businesses and the dancing families.

The organisation is truly grateful to the parents and friends of International Dance Affair for their tireless work in the lead up to these competitions and throughout the weekend to ensure the continued success of this annual event.

Colourful ride for charity CHILDREN were splashed with colour as they rode their bikes for the Kids Colour Ride, while they made new friends and raised money for charity.

The Kids Colour Ride has been running since 2018, where it promotes the River 2 Reef ride and helps raise money for charity.

In addition, participating children were splashed with colour as they ride through the course.

Heather Schaper heard of the Colour Ride and brought her daughter along to have a fun time with some of the other children.

Mrs Schaper said she organised the idea with her cousin to bring their children along.

“I think it’s amazing: it’s good to get the children out in the community and have fun,” Mrs

Schaper said.

“I love that the donations are going to charity and they get all of the children together mixing and socialising.”

River 2 Reef event coordinator Libby Robinson said the event is well loved by the community and had “135 kids registered”.

“Today’s the Kids Colour Ride, which is to launch the River 2 Reef Ride. We started this in 2018 just as a community...and a fun event for kids,” Ms Robinson said.

She explained that “little kids can’t ride in the River 2 Reef. We wanted to come up with something different, rather than riding their bikes around the path – it’s turned out really well”.

“We always used to do a big

fancy launch to launch the event.

But we’re also trying to do an event, so we thought ‘the kids can launch the River 2 Reef for us’,” she said.

“Kids love it and the adults love it. The adults can ride or the adults can stand here and throw col-our at their kids.

“The volunteers love it. It is actually fun – it’s messy but it’s fun.”

Ms Robinson said she loved seeing the children smile in delight as they ride and have colour thrown at them.

“They just think it’s great. It’s not a race, they just ride – it’s a leisurely ride,” she said.

MONEY MATTERS...

There’s still room ANYONE who has taken a turn in small business knows that without cashflow, there is not a lot of certainty around anything else.

And anyone in any business knows just how easy criticism about the “big end of town” can tend to roll of the tongues of those who surmise but know no better.

What BHP has announced in the past week or so about their new seven day payment terms is music to the ears of many small to medium enterprises in our – and a number of other – regions.

It’s good for business, sure. But what this represents is even more important than payment terms alone.

Now, let’s be clear. This is not a company ra-ra session. And at this point I am compelled to declare that I have worked for C-Res which delivers the Local Buying Program across BHP operational footprints in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia.

WE ALL have loans or bank borrowings at some point in our lives.

Most of us will spend the majority of our adult lives indebted to banks through mortgages, personal loans, car loans, credit cards, etc.Which means we are all paying interest for the majority of our adult lives.

Short of winning the lotto there isn’t much we can do to avoid paying this interest. So the real question is have we got our bor-

rowing structured so that it is working for us? There are two sides to this question: 1) Do you have good debt or bad debt?

I.e. have you maximised your tax deductible borrowings? For every dollar of deductible interest paid you can get a tax deduction equal to your personal tax rate, effectively paying as little as 53 cents in the dollar.

2) Are you minimising the interest payable on non-deductible debt? Usually through use of an offset account or making extra repayments each week to save interest over the course of the loan.

The most common mistake we see is redrawing on a deductible loan for non-de-

ductible purposes. This poisons the tax deductibility of the loan, reducing the percentage you can claim.

We also commonly see changes in circumstances such as renting out the family home and upsizing to a new house. Usually the old mortgage has been paid down over the years leaving little to no interest deductions against the rental income despite having a new non-deductible mortgage for the new house.

Taking the time to talk to your trusted advisor early about the above can save tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars over the course of these loans and save yourself from the above mistakes.

The decision to reduce payment terms for small to medium enterprises to seven days (payable from time of invoice approval), is in line with a theme and commitment the so-called “big Australian” has followed for years – especially since 2012 when C-Res was established to deliver the Local Buying Program, alongside the local Buying Foundation.

This was all done with a view to connecting the smallest businesses in our regions with the biggest business in Australia and giving them the chance to tap into the opportunities that came with that.

This is because family was not something I had when I was young.

Meanwhile, C-Res was also working with BHP to ensure their registered small business suppliers were paid within 21 days (and actually it was more like 14-15 days!) of the receipt of invoices.

But now I have my own children who are two years and six months old.

Fast forward to 2021 and the Local Buying Program is now moving to seven day payment terms (from receipt of invoice).

I want to give my children love, so I can treat them better than I was treated.

BHP isn’t perfect. Nothing is. But this is a commitment underpinned by an understanding that doing business in a region is different to doing business in the big smoke. It’s an understanding that to make a real go of things, businesses – especially small to medium businesses – need the assurance that comes with cash flow and confidence.vBHP is courting our local businesses nicely. Does anything that’s happening in Queensland and Victoria, in relation to coronavirus, remind you of a scene from that irreverent ’70s movie Animal House?

How about Victoria’s Chief Health Officer’s statement, “We are neck and neck with this virus, and it is an absolute beast.”

Well, that beast turned out to be more of a lamb but that didn’t stop our Premier, Annastacia The Omnipotent (ATO), from jumping on the animal bandwagon, declaring her three-month delay in getting the COVID-19 vaccine jab was partly because her pet dog bit her.

If you haven’t seen the movie, Animal House is about a trouble-making fraternity whose members challenge the authority of the college dean.

The script includes the line: “What we need right now is a stupid, futile gesture on someone’s part.”

Stupid, futile gestures, like politicians staging belated COVID jab photo shoots, abound at the moment. Stupid, misleading statements by politicians are just as plentiful.

You may remember ATO, her stumbling (bumbling?) Health Minister Yvette D’Ath (Vader), and CHO Dr Young (Saint Jeannette), all came under fire for telling everyone to get vaccinated but didn’t do so themselves. COVID Clown status seemed appropriate.

ATO was offered the vaccine in February but turned it down because she didn’t want to jump the queue.

Last month ATO said she was getting a flu shot first and needed to wait two weeks before she could get the COVID jab.

Last week ATO said her flu shot had been delayed because she was forced to have a tetanus jab after “an accidental dog bite”.

Even ATO admits there has been “a series of bizarre, unfortunate, unforeseen events”.

But wouldn’t you think, after constantly telling us to get the shot, the least all three COVID queens could do was get jabbed themselves.

No wonder my mind wandered and came across the imaginary transcript of a media conference that definitely did not take place.

Journo: Where’s the Premier?

Vader: She’s getting a needle.

Journo: I thought she got her Pfizer shot last week.

Vader: It’s a different shot.

1. How did you come to be involved with 4CRM? I’m a performer with a trained voice, I love music, and I love talking. It was a no-brainer.

2. How long have you been at 4CRM? I can’t remember exactly, I think it must be around 15 years or so since I first became a daytime presenter – I obtained my Certificate II in Broadcasting (Radio) in 2007. I had two two-hour time slots a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from midday to 2pm.

3. What’s the name of your show and what type of music do you play on it? Music Mix, Tuesday afternoons from 2 to 4pm. Basically easy listening with the occasional interview if we have a community group that needs a bit of a boost.

4. Who’s your favourite musician? Do you play an instrument? My musical tastes are eclectic, to say the least. I love Paul Kelly but I’m also partial to Mark Knopfler, the Highwaymen, Steel Eye Span, Louis Armstrong, Redgum, Goanna, Era, Loreena McKennitt. I play piano, violin and guitar, and many years ago I trained at the Conservatorium of Sydney as a coloratura soprano (that didn’t come to anything – life got in the way).

5. Who is your role model and why? Judi Dench – she is awesome and I love her to bits.

6. When have you been most satisfied in your life? I’m pretty good with the way things are right now – I have a casual job that I love (in an entertainment venue, of course), and am free to pursue my passion for theatre.

7. If you could have dinner with anyone in the world who would you choose and why? I would have loved a tête-à-tête with the late Alan Rickman, but from among the living right now, I’d say probably Judi Dench, or possibly Bill Nighy. Why? All great performers and fascinating individuals, with a wealth of theatre stories to tell.

8. Your guilty pleasure is? Chocolate peanuts.

9. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? The best revenge is success.

10. What do you like best about 4CRM? Having access to so much wonderful music, and being in a position to share it with so many people – I never know who’s listening, but people sometimes come up to me to say how much they enjoyed something I played, and that’s a real buzz.

Don’t be the shark at the bar, folks Meredith

Papavasiliou Life most fabulous I’LL never forget it.

One of my favourite editors once said to me, ‘the day a shark comes up, sits next to me at a bar and threatens to eat or kill me, that’s the day I will hunt a shark’.

It was the late 90s and we were doing a story about the drumlines along Mackay’s coastline (there had been an abundance of tiger sharks reported in the region and after a spate of shark attacks down south, the shark cull advocates were out in force).

What struck me about this pearl of wisdom was not so much the sharks (although I absolutely agreed with him) but the underlying notion of minding one’s own business and allowing others to mind theirs.

Some call it ‘Live and Let Live’, others call it harmony. Some say to each their own. And back in the day when I was at school (and before texting was a thing) we had MYOB – and depending on the emphasis we wanted, there was sometimes a stray letter F between the O and the B. I’ll leave that for you to work out on your own.

It’s not a new thing. And if you ask anyone they’d tell you they agree.

TALK THE TALK They talk the talk. But that is easy.

The real question is, do they walk it? Adhere to it? Live it.

Same sex marriage. Choosing not to marry.

Tattooing. Body Shape. Abortion. Christianity. Islam. Working mums. Stay-at-home dads.

Swingers. Drinkers. Smoking. Cycling. Voluntary / Assisted Dying. Body building competitions. Victim blaming. Black Lives Matter.

Me Too. Not All Men. Pride. Gay Mardis Gras.

Rock n Roll. Death Metal. Social Media. Kids with Phones. Kids without Phones.

It’s almost like a Billy Joel song.

But each and every one of these issues is

based on a belief system and the choice either to – or not to – partake of or subscribe to the beliefs associated with.

It’s something we all have a view on. And that view is usually something we hold, personally, quite dear.

My sister and my mother have actioned a kind of family legislation that my dad and I are not allowed to discuss (that’s what Dad and I see) or argue to the death (that’s what the rest of the family seems to see) matters of … well almost anything.

Since I was a kid and started forming my own opinions, I have absolutely loved going head to head with Dad in a debate!

A lot of the time I would even find myself challenging things that I actually believed – and I reckon he did too! – just for the sport of it!

Blimey it would be heated – Federal Question time was a preschool sandpit by comparison!! – but it was robust, it was heated but it was exactly what it was: a ding dong exchange of (sometimes vastly) different views.

We’d say our piece. We’d sometimes get mightily worked up. But we both knew the other was entitled to their own views – and as much as we would like them to, they weren’t going to change!

Importantly, though, I didn’t hold it against Dad and he didn’t hold it against me.

And he is one of the people who does adhere to the live and let live mentality.

LIVE AND LET LIVE If people could front up to a decent and intelligent debate, and not turn it into a name calling free for all, then as a community of individuals we would be more inclined to express their views.

I know people who don’t believe in a woman’s right to choose (ie, abortion) who have told me I am condoning murder because I do.

I have been called a hypocrite because I believe in God, but I also believe that people should be able to live openly, freely and in love as someone who identifies as LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual).

The media has gone (understandably) nuts

over a boy having to apologise for being born a boy. Seriously! Arghhh!

I’ve been judged, criticised and nay-sayed.

All by people to whom their opinions and their beliefs are facts.

I am straight, white, female and employed (crikey! How’s that for showing my privilege!!!) … BUT it ought not make me a target for some of the do-gooders out there who – by calling out me and those like me just for WHO I AM - do more harm than good to vitally important causes that require sensible conversation and action. They are the ones who have just missed the point entirely!

OPINION IS NOT FACT Opinion is not fact. Belief is not fact. But both deserve respect – mutual, fulsome, genuine respect.

It’s one of the fairly fundamental truths that has our Pollies’ heads in a spin – and, sadly, all too often lodged in the depths of their posteriors.

But I ask you this: Of all those things you think are wrong or unhealthy, unnatural or – murderous – how exactly does that affect you?

If a woman chooses to have an abortion, or two women choose to marry, or a bike rider chooses to ride their bike, or a teenager chooses a chocolate milkshake over a strawberry one – how does that affect you? Like, actually affect you???

How. Does. It. Actually. Affect. You? I didn’t think so.

So maybe we should start having conversations about the stuff that really matters.

Maybe we should put our collective thinking caps on and give people the benefit of doubt that they are actually about life’s greater good.

There are bigger fish to fry.

So just live and let live, people. Whatever side of the (enter issue name here) divide you are on.

Let’s not be the shark at the bar.

CANEGROWERS opposed the first reef regulations in 2009 and we take every opportunity to restate that opposition and outline a different way forward for agriculture and the Great Barrier Reef.

Recently CANEGROWERS Board member, Childers region grower Mark Mammino, and Environment and Sustainability Manager Mick Quirk went to Parliament House in Brisbane to tell members of the government’s Health and Environment Committee why damaging and unjust reef regulations should be abandoned The Committee was looking into a bill put forward

by Katter Party MP Mick Dametto known as the ‘reef regulation reversal bill’. It seeks to wind back the latest reef regulations.

CANEGROWERS supports any move to reduce

the regulatory burden on growers and congratulates Mr Dametto for recognising our issues and putting a solution forward.

The original 2009 regulations turned what were industry guidelines on nutrient management into rigid rules and, in doing so, discouraged innovation by growers. The 2019 version of the regulations made a bad situation even worse.

Across the industry, these regulations have proven to be confusing, heavy with additional paperwork and costly for growers (we are supposed to pay a consultant to develop and approve our nutrient management!).

And none of these things will do anything for water quality for the Reef. All they have done is create frustration and disappointment.

Our formal submission on Mr Dametto’s bill, due later this month, will suggest improvements to what he’s proposed. In particular, we will recommend that the 2009 requirement for Environmental Risk Management Plans should be removed.

As with other reef regulation requirements since, ERMPs proved to be a paper exercise that achieved nothing and even the Queensland Government dropped them from its compliance requirements after a short time.

Another key and important point CANEGROWERS made before the parliamentary committee was to explain again that the whole basis of regulation is based on reef report cards – and this is where a key problem lies.

These report cards consistently show our industry in a bad light by under-representing the practice change that has taken place on farms right through the industry and by expecting adoption of practices (like cutting fertiliser below best practice levels)

THE REEF: A wonder of nature which make farms uneconomic.

The government’s case for regulation of farm practices is unravelling.

With every grower that becomes accredited in Smartcane BMP, the case for voluntary and continuous improvement programs driven by industry and recognised by international sugar buyers becomes stronger.

Jacobsen Zero Waste Whitsundays There are many small ways we can reduce our imprint. Remember, it’s small steps taken frequently by most of us, that will make a huge difference to the health of the planet.

Below is a list we created at Zero Waste Whitsundays, to figure out where to start. This week we will give you the overview which you could print and put on your fridge. We will go into more detail about each one in the future.

Ten Ideas to Reduce Your Imprint.

Household Waste. There are five bins or refuse sections to manage. a/ Landfill, b/ Recycling (Council) c/ Soft Plastics (You can return to the green bins at the front of many supermar-

kets), d/ Compost (store in your freezer until you can take to the Whitsunday Organic Garden or a friend’s garden or your own compost bin), e/ Cans, Bottles & Single Use Plastic Drink Bottles (Return for 10 cents each to Anything Environmental in Jubilee Pocket behind the Tavern). If you are doing some or all of b/ to e/ it’s jarring how tiny the a/ section becomes literally overnight.

Reusable Bags. Put them in your car or your hand bag or your pocket. Take them to the supermarket and eliminate the need to buy and continue to use single use plastic bags. We leave our bags near the front door after we have unpacked the groceries and take them to the car which is their permanent home so we always have them handy.

Reusable Beeswax Wraps or Reusable Silicon Pouches (to permanently replace cling wrap and ziplocks). You can purchase these at the Airlie Markets

Read Your Labels. Become aware of the toxins in products, including every jar and packet of processed food. If you are new to this practice it can be a shock how many toxic ingredients and chemicals we ingest and spray and wash our clothes in. There are masses of alternatives that really do work.

Local businesses, (we love local!) and more conscious companies abound.

Compostable Packaging. There is fantastic progress being made with compostable paper bags and when it’s not possible to have no packaging, choose compostable.

Reusable Water Bottle. For many this is a given, but it is off the charts the difference it makes if we all carry our own refillable water bottle and vow to not purchase single use plastic water bottles when we are out and about.

Fresh, Locally Sourced Produce.

How fortunate we are to be in this region of heavenly and delicious options.

Meatless Mondays. There are many

films and books to learn more about the impact of processed and factory farmed meat on the planet. A practice in other parts of the world to raise awareness is to eat vegetarian or vegan one day or one dinner a week on a Monday.

Buy In Bulk. Less packaging. Better prices. Reduced impact.

Repurposing What You Already Have. Before shopping, take a look at what you have in your home and use this first. If you have children, it’s amazing the creative projects that are possible.

No need for overwhelm!

RECYCLE: Save the planet

Inspired by disabled riding RIDING for Disabled Association volunteer Amy Drew’s life-long love of horses has inspired her to lend her time to volunteering.

She has now been volunteering the with association for six years, riding fortnightly with students.

It is the perfect solution to not being able to afford a horse of her own, while being able to help out an organisation she believes in.

“I just love coming out here (to

the Riding for the Disabled site) to volunteer and help out”. “(It) lets you work with other people,” Ms Drew said.

“I just help with the lessons and organise the helmets, get the saddles and the bridles ready and all the grooming kits.

However, Ms Drew said she rides every fortnight with the students.

“I like helping (to) teach the lessons. Normally when it is a good

day, we do the Nutbush. The students learn it on horseback.”

She explained this dance move was done with their arms.

Her love of horses started when she was eight years old, where her passion continues in her adult years.

“I had a very good riding lesson when I was learning how to ride, when I was eight years old,” she said.

Auctions increasing in popularity locally IT’S NO secret that the property market in the Mackay Isaac and Whitsunday regions is delivering major growth.

This has extended to all aspects of real estate.

Statistics from the Queensland Market Monitor show Queensland’s continued growth in the past 12 months, steadily catching up to the numbers seen in the southern states.

Auctioneering is a facet of real estate that has historically been secondary in Queensland with NSW and Victoria often overshadowing the Sunshine State.

But recent results have shown auctions are increasing in popularity and clearance rates are on the rise.

The REIQ spoke to David Holmes, Cooley Auctions Partner and chair of the REIQ Auctioneer Chapter, to better understand the current auction market in Queensland and the in-direct advantages of a listing going to auction Competitiveness Competitiveness can help determine the real value of a property With demand for property reaching extreme levels in Queensland, property prices have responded accordingly and sellers are experiencing a market that is skewed in their favour.

Therefore, resulting in agents having the opportunity to make larger sales and increased commissions.

However, Holmes says it can be hard to accurately value a property in the current market due to a rapid spike in demand so it’s important to give yourself every opportunity to sell each property at its best price – and that involves how a property is marketed and sold.

“If you sell a property in two days through a private sale, you may feel really good about yourself… but have you done the best thing by the vendor and have you maximised return and achieved the best possible price?

“That’s not a question about whether you had

enough time or exposure to the market… it’s about whether or not you had enough people in competition to achieve a premium result.”

Holmes agrees benefits exist in selling quickly through a private sale. But, putting in the extra time and effort to market a house for longer and sell via auction may result in better outcomes.

“It’s not until you put two or three buyers in competition with each other that you get the true value in the current market,” says Holmes. “They feel as though they have to put their best foot forward to secure the property.”

Interstate Migrants Interstate migrants are adding to this competitiveness and are helping drive the auction market in Queensland. Holmes says the movers from Sydney and Melbourne, who are accustomed to an auction culture, will be expecting to buy at auction in Queensland.

“There is an enormous appetite [for auctions] from people who can no longer travel internationally and have an enormous amount of savings,” he says.

“This is a market where people would prefer to live in places like Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Cairns as opposed to downtown Sydney or Melbourne.

“If you are a professional agent right now, I think you are doing yourself a disservice if you’re not auctioning a property… I believe you’re leaving money on the table.”

Improved Lead Generation One of the most important parts of the job as a real estate professional involves generating new leads and auctions provide many opportunities to do this.

A busy auction with multiple prospective buyers can mean a lot more to an agent than that one property being sold.

“It’s not just about running a great auction and getting great results, it’s equally a business and lead

Auctions can now be seen as the perfect place to demonstrate your skills and talents as it may lead to future business. With the current levels of competitiveness and demand for property, proven results and professionalism may be what convinces a buyer or seller to do business with an agent.

Holmes says selling a property for its true value in the current market will provide any potential client with a sense of confidence if they choose you.

Proving that you can achieve premium results is one of the most effective ways to generate new leads and business.

“You can basically go and invite the neighbourhood to the auction… if they come along and a great result is achieved, you have a number of wins that have already happened.

“Owners and buyers have seen what you can do and they are much more likely to make contact, which may result in more listings.”

Tips from AJK AIR Keep your air conditioner set at 24° The recommended temperature for your air conditioning system is 24°C in the summer months and 20°C in the winter months. These temperatures are comparative to outside temperatures in the Queensland climate and avoid having your air conditioning system working in overload to maintain an excessive temperature.

Start your A/C early in the morning The best way to combat the heat and have your air conditioner working to its maximum efficiency is to turn it on early in the morning. Most people believe to save money they need to wait until midday to turn the system on because it won’t be running for a long amount of time when in fact, this works the opposite way. It is more efficient to turn your system on first thing in the morning so your air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard and battle against the well-established heat to maintain a cool level of comfort in your home.

Close doors and windows In areas you want to stay cool, keep doors closed inside the house. This will help keep the cool air in and the hot air out.

This will also help reduce the temperature in the areas you want to cool faster.

Stay within certain cooling and heating temperatures Each degree of extra heating in winter or cooling in summer increases energy consumption by approximately 5–10%. Set the controls to 20–22°C in winter and 22–24°C in summer.

Avoid excessive expenses on start-up Avoid setting you’re A/C controller at a colder setting than normal when you turn on your air conditioner. It will not cool your home any faster and could result in excessive cooling and, therefore, unnecessary expense.

Avoid using indoor appliances On hot days take advantage of using the BBQ or outdoor grill.

Using your oven on hot days with no ventilation will increase the temperature of your home.

Doing what you love for a living

By JACOB CUMNER THERE is an old saying by Confucious that goes along the lines that if you are doing a job you love, then you’ll never work a day in your life.

John Bartley is living proof that it’s true!

The Queensland Rugby League’s Mackay Cutters correspondent has built for himself a career based on his two life loves: writing and footy.

SPORTS FAN “I have always been a big sports fan, and Rugby League has always been my main sport,” Bartley said.

“I knew I had a fairly decent writing ability from a young age, and I enjoyed it, so, yeah, I thought I’d give it a go.”

It’s a good thing he did!

From Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), to soccer, to touch football and league, there are many sports which have benefited from Bartley’s penmanship and enthusiasm.

“I moved to Mackay in 2010, when I was originally with the Cutters.

“I went away from it for a couple of years, and in 2015 I came back, full-time with the Mackay and District Rugby League with the A Grade competition, and through that I was offered a position from the Queensland Rugby League to become the Mackay Cutters correspondent.”

“I have played some soccer and some touch football; some beach volleyball.

Crushing season well and truly underway KEVIN

BY THE time you read this the crushing season will hopefully be well and truly under way.

Forecasts predict an increase in the tonnage harvested compared with previous years, which is a testament to the growing sector’s potential across the region.

However, an increased crop doesn’t necessarily mean increased sugar.

Every dollar counts when it comes to farm income and growers use a range of methods to maximise the sugar content of their cane (CCS) in the early period of the crushing when there is very little or no cane yet crushed.

This year more than ever these methods are important because the start of the crush is a little earlier than usual and it has been a little wet.

Damp conditions in some areas have certainly played their part in slowing the time taken for the cane to mature.

As growers, we all dread supplying cane to the mill that tests below 7.00 CCS. Why is the figure of 7.00 CCS important?

All cane supply agreements in the State have a minimum CCS which in most cases is 7.00.

Cane which tests below 7.00 is

deemed unfit for processing and is condemned. That means no cane payment.

In most cases, harvesting crews can take off anything up to 15 per cent of a farm’s total cane crop in the first scheduled rotation.

If this cane is condemned it costs growers the income from that part of their crop, the harvesting expenses for cutting it, and the costs to grow the next crop on that harvested land.

In our region, the Wilmar mills do pay an ex-gratia payment according to their supply contract that goes some way to cover those costs when the cane has been condemned.

However, Mackay Sugar doesn’t pay the growers anything. Growers are left to deal with the expenses off their own back.

They also have to wait for their next turn in the harvesting rotation before they receive any income.

With crushing capacity in our district mills lower than optimal and improved mill reliability still to be achieved, mills are forced to start earlier than is desirable in order to finish the season at a reasonable time.

That means a higher risk that the harvested cane will test under 7.00 CCS. For this reason, CANEGROWERS Mackay has recommended to Mackay growers that they use a range of methods to try to avoid receiving zero dollars for some of their early harvested cane.

One method uses a piece of agtech kit which has been around for decades: a refractometer.

Now, getting an accurate measure of pre-season sugar content is something the growing industry is in real need of.

It would be a great comfort for a grower to know exactly what CCS his cane will produce, as that dictates how much he will be paid.

Unfortunately, a refractometer is not able to give the grower an accurate CCS measurement. At the present time, that can only be done in a lab test in the mill.

However, a refractometer can be used as a valuable guide for scheduling harvesting on a farm.

It measures the refraction of light through a solution containing dissolved solids. The greater the refraction of light, the greater the concentration of the dissolved solution (in this case, sugar).

Growers can also get help with this from their local productivity officers (either from the Mackay Area Productivity Services or the Plane Creek Productivity Services organisations).

These officers will back the grower’s own experience and judgement in deciding which paddock and cane variety is going to give them the best economic return and therefore when it should be scheduled in the harvesting rotation.

CUTTER: Dale Fortescue cutting away at the Mackay Show

Two sides to the same axe DALE Fortescue leads something of a double life at this time of year.

Yesterday morning, he was the mild-mannered milk-selling dairy famer with a great sense of humour.

But as the clock ticked toward noon, there emerged a somewhat different side to the affable market vendor.

Dale and his two youngest sons, Harry and George, are renowned and respected in Woodchop circles throughout the region – and back in the day, Dale was a national champion.

Ask him about it, and he is humble, and slightly reluctant.

The father of five grew up on his grandparent’s Mt Charlton dairy farm, living there until he was 15.

A third-generation farmer – following in the footsteps of his grandparents, Gordon and Almira

Argent, and parents, Roger and Flo Fortescue – Dale and his wife Paula now own their own dairy farm on the banks of Broken River at Eungella.

Their Eungelladale Milk is marketed throughout the Mackay Isaac and Whitsunday regions.

But there is one week or so of each year, where the axe is sharpened, and the wood is lopped – and that is the week of the Mackay, Proserpine and Townsville shows.

Competing at all three shows, Dale and his sons are also carting wood for chopping up to the Townsville Show next week.

These days, he is all about having a go – and seeing his sons do the same.

Every one of the five kids – Jack, Sam, Meg, Harry and George – are all pretty handy with an axe; or a saw, as in Meg’s case!

“I’m a third-generation dairy farmer and a third-generation wood chopper,” Dale said.

“And the kids are fourth generation.

“We used to supply the blocks for the show in the 70s and 80s and Grandad was a woodchopper until he was 83.”

The former student of Mt Charlton School (where he had to behave himself because his mum was a teacher aide there!) and Mirani High School, also won a world title in the late 90s.

“That was back a bit, when I was younger and I could do a bit of chopping!”

And now?

“We’re heading up to Prossy on Friday and Saturday and then we will be heading up to Townsville.

“We all like it.”

WOW. What a St Lawrence Wetlands Weekend!

A highlight was the sold-out Matt Golinski GWFN and Isaac Regional Council lunch. The produce was as fresh as it gets, a true Farm2Plate extravaganza.

Those lucky enough to reserve a seat at the table were treated to a feast of local mud crab, prawns, and barramundi.

Signature Sirloin and Mansfield Smoked Ham Hocks also featured on the menu, along with Whitsunday Mushrooms, Blueriver microgreens and lots more from our Greater Whitsunday Farmers’ Market stallholders.

While Dave Perkins (4MK) entertained and informed the crowd in his role as MC, a team of enthusiastic students and teachers from Mackay North State High School were busy

behind the scenes. On Saturday morning, the teachers ran a training program that saw their students setting the tables and adding great energy to the overall event.

This was the second year GWFN has invited MNSHS hospitality students to complete work experience criteria to implement food service at the Saturday luncheon.

One of the enthusiastic students, currently studying for her Certificate Two in Hospitality, was happy to put theory into practice. “The local food at St Lawrence was really well-presented, and it tasted amazing. It was awesome to work as a team.”

Another student said she enjoyed the formal tone of the event. Clear instructions tempered with creative freedom allowed the hospitality students to set tables with correct cutlery for the very first time. “I was able to learn a lot regarding table service, which will be beneficial in the future”.

All students agreed that the weekend was a unique and fun experience. Foodservice, too, was taught on the day, with another student saying, “The weekend introduced me to

a new environment. Being able to cater and serve the food really helped me put my skills into practice.

“The seasonal, locally sourced food prepared by Matt Golinski and his team was beautifully presented and a true marriage of flavours. It was a new experience for our students to discover that the Mackay, Whitsunday and Isaac Regions produce such a diverse range of food.” One teacher commented.

Yes, it certainly was a mammoth weekend for the GWFN team. Thanks go to Kirra Tully for her outstanding work in coordinating the event. We are also proud to say that we delivered a Zero Waste event, thanks to our sponsors’ Sustainable Table, Reef Catchment and Auscan worm farms. A big high five also to Andrea from Coffee Service Packaging, who provided the biodegradable products brought the worms and much more help beyond our expectations.

For me, it was a great success and an enjoyable weekend meeting new friends in Isaac.

1974 HQ Holden ready to burn rubber THIS week we have Joe Anderson a Mackay local with his 1974 HQ sedan which he purchased in 2018.

It houses a mildly worked ls2 engine, fully manualised turbo 350 gearbox, 9 inch diff, Keizer drag wheels, and the car is tubbed to fit the 11” wide rims on the rear.

Joe built the car from a bare shell in three years to enjoy on

the street and hopefully he’ll be drag racing it soon at Palmyra.

Joe has been into cars all his life and this HQ is about his 56th car.

This will be his last one, as they are too expensive to build and find now.

He is proud to have brought the car back to life from a rolling shell and own another piece of Aussie history.

RENO: The Commodore undergoing a makeover

This F-Truck is tough as nails THIS tuff-as-nails F truck is owned by James Buchbach, a young local car enthusiast.

James bought the truck in 2014 and took roughly just over three years to build this project.

It was fully stripped apart and a complete full nut and bolt restoration was done in the shed.

Building these type of cars

isn’t emade easier the older they get. So James had to buy a few other trucks to get parts from to complete the restoration along the way.

They removed the 351ci Cleveland and built a new engine for it - a whopping 436ci Cleveland that is currently in the engine bay. An all-new interior and custom dash was made to make the

truck very comfortable and a joy to drive. A lot of local Mackay buisnesses were used to complete the restoration.

Cold weather visits us again ON THE weather front: Just as we get used to the lovely morning temperatures, Another cold snap is back tonight and tomorrow morning.

The Saturday morning temperatures will be around 10°C on the coastline, 6°C in the Pioneer Valley and 3°C up the top in Eungella.

Sunday morning will be the coldest, 7°C on the coastline, 4°C in the Pioneer Valley and -1°C up the top at Eungella.

The cold will remain until around Tuesday next week. But along with the cold, Low 20°C’s as maximums with fine and sunny days.

Out on the water: After the morning blow, the winds settle in the afternoon.

So for the whole weekend, 10-15 knots on the South Westerly during the morning then light variables in the afternoon.

Seas below a meter and the swell is below 0.5m.

Tidal swing isn’t too bad at the moment with the full moon due next Friday.

Lots of nice fish around Amy

THE fishing community is alive and buzzing at the moment despite the cooler mornings.

The weather is definitely not discouraging anglers to get out and wet a line! On Sunday the 13th of July the Mackay NAIDOC Inc hosted its second community event which was held at McCreadys Creek, Slade Point (see picture above).

The awesome event kicked off at 10am with the competition going with the incoming tide and finishing up at 2:30pm.

A great turnout of families for the event and almost everyone with their fishing rod in the water hoping for a catch.

The prize was a $200 BCF voucher for the biggest, smallest and oddest catch on the day. The weather was pretty average, I’m not going to lie, a bit overcast and a small shower around 11am, but not even that could put anyone off from leaving the beach to take cover.

The fishing was a bit slow to start but picked up with seven fish caught within quick concession of each other. The species caught this week were three nice-sized bream, queen fish, flathead and whiting.

Well done to all who participated and took home a fish! This week’s prize winners were Tash and Des, taking home their vouchers victoriously.

Whiting what a great fish!

I thought about my target species always being barramundi (mostly because it’s my favourite table eating fish) and I remembered my first catch being a whiting.

It was caught on my dodgy kids’ rod back in the 90s when I was introduced to fishing by my family.

It got me thinking of my next trip to the beach and about restocking my whiting compartment in my tackle box.

So there are two species of whiting - one being the King George whiting which are found mostly in the western parts of Australia.

But the good old sand whiting are well known in these parts of Qld and can get as big as 500g.

The best time to fish for these buggers is dusk and dawn. When feeding they are looking for worms, yabbies, pipis or any other invertebrates uncovered by wave and current action.

So when picking a spot to fish look for light wave action. Now whiting love to eat all that I just mentioned but if you can’t get ahold of any of those they do love a bit of fresh squid.

Another thing I would like to mention is whiting will take your bait if it moves more naturally in the water.

I tend to use the good old hand line when I am beach fishing because you quite simply feel the fish bite better and they can not see your line.

Fish are actually quite smart, believe it or not and if your fishing line is too visible they simply won’t go near it. hilst fishing for whiting you could come across the flathead as they live in the same habitat as its fishy mate - and they are also well worth chasing as a table fish.

My recommendations if chasing flathead is to fish the shallower water on the incoming tide at the beach. They absolutely cannot resist a good yabbi.

So with all of that I will be down the beach this week giving it my best!

I am yet to find a good yabbi bed so I’m making that my next fishing priority and I look forward to bringing you all some updates in my next column.

MACKAY Road Runners and The Lost Bunyips Trail runners had a great morning out at the sensational Rowallan Park complex.

Over sixty runners challenged themselves to a 5km and 10k cross country trail run. The 2.5km loop-style course set by several of the The Lost Bunyips - including Martin Lambert, Tim Caddy, Peter Shuttlewood, Thomas Wendt and crew - was found to be a testing event.

A very successful trail running

The 2km event for the juniors was a hotly contested affair with Heidi Wilson cheering on the sideline for her elder siblings Yasmin and Sienna, who took out the top two placings over all, followed by first male Toby Heinke.

Outstanding performances also came form fellow junior athletes and up and coming Lost Bunyips, Oliver Graves, Amelia Shuttlewood, Georgina Shuttlewood and Elise Tarlington. Congratulations to all the kids and adults who ran and supported their families.

Great morning run at sensational park event was staged, where runners from five to over seventy years old enjoyed the awesome stage of Rowallan Park and it’s spectacular backdrops.

Runners were sent on their way from a scratch start towards their first testing incline before making their way through the winding rain forest and open grassy hills.

Junior runners Oliver Rule and his brother Toby Rule were in fine form as they lead the field through the first loop with Cristian Smith, Hamish Donnollan, Luke Leven,

Justin Rule, Paul Mackenzie, Michael Feenaghty, Ainslie Heinke, Gavan Porter and Lily Leven hot on their heels.

The final result saw the lead group position change several times, with eventual winners of the 10km being Cristian Smith and Demi Caldwell. The 5km field was impressive, with the Leven siblings taking out gold in their respective categories ahead of Gavan Porter, Ross Connor, Peter Heinke, Peter Wright, Jenny Harmer and Melissa Harris.

Blokarts’ fun time racing

FOUR Mackay blokarters hit the sands of Yeppoon for a fun weekend of racing.

George Camilleri, Eric Smith, and Tony and Kate Frances from the Central Queensland Blokart Club were among 40 competing in the three-day event hosted by the Capricornia club at Mulambin, near Yeppoon.

“It was a fun weekend, with various courses laid to test the sailors’ skills,” George said.

“Blokarting can be an exhilarating sport that the whole family can enjoy.”

The CQBC usually sail every second Sunday at Cape Hillsborough, due to tide times and wind, when members of the Whitsunday club also compete.

THIS SATURDAY (June 19) will see Mackay duke it out with Toowoomba for a spot in the inaugural XXXX chairman’s challenge final.

Mackay Regional Council Mayor Greg Williamson said the Sugar City earned their spot in the semi-finals “by winning...at the Foley Shield in Townsville a couple of weeks ago.

“We’re here because we won the Foley Shield and we’re playing Toowoomba Saturday night at BB Print Stadium,” Mayor Williamson said.

“We want to fill the stadium and show how Mackay is truly a rugby league town.

“We need to support our team, because this will be the inaugural championships in Queensland,

where we get all these local teams playing together.”

Mayor Williamson was proud of Mackay’s efforts in winning the Foley Shield against Townsville, where he encouraged everyone to rally behind the team for this Saturday.

“To see this sort of event happening now, it really starts to give pathway pr grams for young people to get into rugby league,” he said.

“We’re not talking about elite level sports – we’re talking about our team, a Mackay based A-grade team that’s now got a spot on the semis.

“Hopefully, we’ll have spot on the finals.”

Mackay Fullback Ben Barba expects this Saturday’s game to be a tough match. “(These games) are always go-

ing to be tough, but we have some good players here in Mackay,” Mr Barba said.

“After winning the first round in Townsville, I think the guys are pretty confident and really excited about this game.

“In my eyes, Mackay’s always been up there. It’s good to really be able to showcase that this weekend and show how strong the footy talent is up here.

“I’m just looking forward to it, as the other 16 guys are.”

Head Coach Steve Jackson is excited about the clash.

“We’ve won the Foley shield final a few weeks ago and we were the underdogs in that match,” Mr Jackson said.

“To come into this match is a bonus – it’s a semifinal, going on to maybe the state title.”

Netball girls have a blast ROUND Seven of the Mackay Netball Association’s Junior Competition saw two of Storm Netball Club’s top U-16 teams come head-to-head.

Sitting third on the ladder, the Cyclones were keen to show the Blasts why they were ahead in the

competition. Storm Blasts however, had other ideas. While the first quarter saw an even start, the Blasts soon put on some brilliant defense denying the Cyclone’s shooters the opportunity to score.

Complimenting the defensive efforts of their teammates,

the centre court players showed outstanding skill in feeding the ball to their shooting circle. The Blasts’ shooters took advantage of every chance and slowly widened the gap on the scoreboard with the final score being 38-25 to Storm Blasts.

While Storm Blasts walked away with bragging rights this time, it was a tough game and a hard-fought win.

But in the spirit of netball, all the girls came together afterwards to celebrate together – win or lose!

Winter Carnival a highlight for Association MACKAY Netball Association’s annual Winter Carnival is a highlight in the netball calendar with teams travelling from far and wide to compete.

Storm Netball Club had seven teams competing across many divisions including Moddies, U12s, U14s, Women’s Division One and Fast Fives.

While all Storm teams were fiercely competitive in their respective divisions, it was the Fast Five team that claimed victory, going through the weekend undefeated. The team was made up of Premier League, Division One and Division Two players who combined to produce some outstanding netball in a fast paced and tough competition.

Storm also had several players put on the Mackay Monarch’s representative uniform for the weekend in preparation for the State Age Championships on the Sunshine Coast in a few weeks’ time.

Bowls break PROSERPINE Bowls are having a break from Pennants for a couple of weeks while the Australian Open is on down at the Gold Coast. It is hoped that all of players who have taken the opportunity to test themselves against players outside of their usual realm of experience are having a wonderful time. The quality of players who enter this event, given that it costs, time, travel, accommodation in addition to the entry fees, will be a real test. At present the Men’s Singles has been taking place and Wayne Handley has made it through to the post sectional play.

Open golf The Proserpine Golf Club hosted the 2021 North Queensland Men’s Open Golf Championships over 36 holes last Saturday and Sunday, with 148 players competing. The NQ Open Champion was Will Florimo, from the Atherton Golf Club with a 36-hole gross score of 139.

The NQ Closed Champion was Richie Renton, of Mackay with 147 gross, and the NQ Senior champion was Peter Hawken, of Townsville with 148. The graded winners were: A Grade champion, Kyle Dowde, Mackay, and Sam Harrison runner-up. The nett winner was Adam Maggs, from Conrad Werner.

Premier darts ROUND 14 sees Whitsunday Darts enter the second half of their Premier League season.

The table has settled down a little, but that does not mean that anyone can take their eye off the top-eight prize. There’s still lots to play for with lots of positions to be swapped before this season is over. The weekend’s action got underway with a catch-up game between Seumas Rose and Jason Rockstroh. This was the first of two games for each player, with Seumas playing 2019 champ Andy Peel later in the day, and Jason playing 2020 Champ Gene Birse in his second match. With a tight match-up, it was Jason who came out on top with a 6/5 win.

For the past 21 weeks I have been covering sport for Mackay Local News and in that time I have witnessed some teams soar high on victory while others faced crushing defeats.

But what I have truly loved seeing is

the heart competitors play with.

One team which had that in abundance this season, was the U14s girls rugby league West Tigers team.

The girls, who recently played their final match of the season, showed plenty of heart each and every time they took to the field – win, lose or draw!

No matter how hard the scrappy little team were beaten, they always managed to get back up again!

They forged ahead, no matter how

difficult the game – often, at times, going into matches without reserves or with injured players.

To me that shows heart. It shows dedication and it shows that these young women are willing to put their all into the game they love so much.

I have faith these young players can accomplish anything, as long as they are together.

They may not have made it to the grand finals this season, but did they try!

They pushed their limits and, as a reporter, I’m glad I was able to cover a team with such passion and heart.

To them I have this: Thank you for your sportsmanship, for putting all you had into the game many love!

These are some hard yakka sporting champions that will go on to do greater things in the future.

RELAX: Col Gleeson and Brad Bettiens share a drink

One point difference SARINA’S Col Gleeson played three games in three days at Sarina Bowls Club, with only one point difference each time.

In men’s A Singles against George Cook, Col had a good lead but George fought back and kept him on 20 points for 12 ends.

Col shot ahead again and got to 24 points and sat on that for five ends bringing the score up to 24 all with Col getting the final shot and winning 25-24.

On Saturday a men’s A Pairs semi-final was also great entertainment between Brad Bettiens and Col Gleeson against Ron Perkins and Brian Adams.

On their last end they were 20all and the third last bowl took kitty in the ditch. With close bowls it

came down to a measure between Col’s and Brian’s bowls with Ron and Brian winning 21-20.

On Sunday Col played another Men’s A singles game against his pairs partner Brad Bettiens, with that game also keeping everyone on edge and again going down to the last bowl with Brad winning 25-24.

Other Men’s A Singles results, there was a close game between Luke Mills and Bill Roots being 24 all and Bill winning the final shot 25-24.

Other matches: Kevin Barnes d Les Smith 25-11, John Willan d Tom Peitzner 25-18, Doug Giddings d Kevin Barnes 25-14, Bill Roots d Bruce Archer 27-23, John Petersen d John Willan 25-22.

HAPPY: The girls show off their trophy

Impressive touch grand final IT WAS an impressive turnout for the touch football grand finals for the open men and women’s competitions played at the Norris Road touch football fields.

Mackay Touch football administrator Bette Wyer said it was great to see the clubs coming to support each other.

“There were a lot of teams that have missed out but have come back to cheer their favourites on so it’s good to see and it’s great to see families as well,” Bette said.

The best of the best turned up to play as hard as they could to bring

the finals to a close with the B Men’s Magpies up against Mirani Scorchers.

Women’s Tigers reserve grade played the Miriani Misfits, while Warridube United faced GTV storm.

In the Ladies’ Super Series, Cat Woman played Super girl.

Mackay Touch Football president Jason Miller said started the super series in which the ladies dress up as superheroes to make four teams.

“Its good because all the ladies get to play against each other and

alongside each other and not normally do they get to do that,” Jason said.

This was to be the finals of this season of touch until late July when the new season begins.

The Fast Four competition will be held later this with guest stars Dave Zanette and Bo dela Cruz showing up and staying over the weekend.

The money raised in the fast four will go to charities win the day as well as Jack Fortesque who has had a serious car accident, so we are raising money for both charities.

Young fellas shine IT WAS a huge moment for Mackay Little Leaguers at BB Print stadium last weekend as teams from Sarina crocodiles and the Mackay Magpies took to the field.

The kids ran on for their moment on-field at half time of the Super Intrust Mackay Cutters versus Tweed Seagulls game Saturday afternoon.

To the cheers of proud families and friends in the crowd, the young future competitors got to show off their skills under the bright lights in front of a packed stadium.

They had a ball and so did the fans!

Shooting for open day at Mt Vince CONTROL: Nice ball work in a tough match

Classy home-turf win in Colts comp THE Tweed Seagulls took the kickoff for the Round Eight match of Hastings Deering Colts competition against the Cutters, who took the ball and headed straight down the field.

The Cutters were first to add points to the board with Flynn Camilleri crossing in the first three minutes of the game. However, the conversion was unsuccessful.

The Gulls kept the Cutters on their toes testing their defences pushing closer and closer for a try with the team managing to keep the visiting team at bay.

Until Klese Haas managed to find a way through the Cutters’ defence and slipping across the white line, putting the seagulls on the board in the 17th minute.

This was followed by Cooper

Many’s crossing in the twenty-second minute; their offence paying off with Tyler Han taking the conversion to bring the score to 10-4 in favour of the Seagulls.

Tyler Holmes answered back for the cutters going over the line as the clock ran down in the dying minutes of the first half of the game with Rayden Burns making the conversion.

The scores were all tied up at 10 apiece heading in to half-time.

Not long after the re-start of play, the Cutters were over again with Henry Head taking the ball over the white line with a conversion by Henri Stocks.

Henri Stocks was not satisfied to just make conversions as he took the ball over the white line himself seven minutes later, converting his

own try and bringing the score 2010. Morgan McWhirter was over the line for the Cutters in the fifty-fourth minute with another successful conversion from Henri.

The Gulls, not satisfied to let the Cutters gain another try, saw Charlie Murray going over with a successful conversion by Jaylan De Groot, bringing the score to 28-16.

In the sixty-fourth minute, Jed Edwards was sin-binned for a high tackle which led to a penalty shot for Stocks, who took the kick, bringing the score to 30-16.

The Cutters took out the final try in the seventy-sixth minute by Rayden Bruns with the final conversion made by Stocks.

The final score was 36-16, and the Cutters notched up another classy win on home turf.

MACKAY, Isaac and Whitsunday shooting enthusiasts will head to Mt Vince Shooting Complex’s open day this Sunday.

The day’s activities start at 8:30am with shooters invited to bring a guest to try long range shooting as a sport.

The event will be open to both licensed and unlicensed shooters, aged from 11 years and older who are keen to try long range shooting.

Coaches will be on hand and all shooting will be supervised by nationally accredited range officer and unlicensed shooters will be supervised one on one basis while shooting.

Shooting will be conducted over 100-500yard lengths and participants must wear casual, sun-smart clothing, a hat, and enclosed footwear as well as hearing protection.

Licensed competitors will need to show firearms license for a rifle and ammunition capable of shooting up to 500 yards, and they are

required to be at the range no later than 8:30am.

Club rifle and ammunition ($2 per round) is also available and a rifle fee is $15 is payable by all participants.

Unlicensed people are required to bring photo ID and anyone under 18 is to be accompanied by an adult.

Electronic targets and scoring systems will be in use which provided instantaneous feedback on a monitor screen showing exactly where the bullet impacted.

All shots will be recorded and provided to participants and a free sausage sizzle will be held at the conclusion of shooting with softdrink and water available for sale.

Racing brings crowd

RACING fans came out in their droves at Treasure Park in Moranbah last weekend for the clubs inaugural family fun day meeting last Saturday.

A big crowd was in attendance with Moranbah continuing their love affair with racing.

Club Secretary Olivia O’Neill was pleased with crowd numbers and more than impressed with the effort that the men and women of Moranbah put into the club’s beefed up fashions of the field with the clubs highly competitive fashions on the field.

One of the biggest hits of the day was the father and son hurdle race up the Treasure Park straight six.

Over 40 gallopers faced the starters over the six races on the program.

The first race on the program was taken out by the Mackay-trained galloper from the Johnny Manzelmann yard in Mackay who legged Rockhampton apprentice Cody (Chip) Collis aboard Mishani Fortune.

This horse outstayed its rivals over the 1550 metre trip with Bevan Johnson’s galloper Ramchandra running home strongly for second placing with Dakota Graham in the saddle.

The Manzelmann galloper has a real liking for the sandy loamy surfaces and will feature strongly over the winter carnival on the country circuit.

The most impressive popular win of the day came in Barbican with again talented local hoop Dakota Graham in the saddle.

They took out the Class B handicap over the 1170 metres for the Moranbah magician Bevan Johnson in a fine training performance to win first up after a slow start for its new stable.

The freshly gelded Johnson Galloper has switched on to a new level running away for an 8.5 length victory.

WILLING AND ABLE ABILITY: The All Abilities team gets together for a group photo

MACKAY is leading the charge for a Statewide All Abilities QRL competition.

The campaign, being led by Mackay’s Queensland Rugby League local area manager Jade Johnson, would change the face of the game - and boost All Ability competitors - throughout the state.

Johnson made the call at a

recent QRL state meeting; citing the success of recent Albility games, and challenging other clubs in Queensland to develop their own All Abilities sides, to enable a statewide competition.

“This just shows that rugby league has a place for everybody,” Johnson said. “It is such an inclusive sport, it doesn’t matter who you are, there is a place for you in our great game.”

THE Mackay All Abilities Cut-

ters team took to BB Print Stadium again last weekend, going up against all abilities West Tigers before the Hasting Deering Colts and the Super Intrust Mackay Cutters took to the field.

This has been the third time all abilities teams have been recognised in front of a Mackay crowd, playing on the same field as their local legends.

Kathryn Andrews said it was a lot of hard work and dedication, on behalf of support workers and parents and clubs and now NDIS, to get the team out on the field.

“They have treated the players like the fantastic young men and women that they are and being out on the field like this really means a lot to them,” Kathryn said.

“The QRL and NRL have been extremely dedicated to making this happen.”

Founder of SNAGS, Ronda Adams, said the event was “magnificent.

“This has been the third time that these guys have been recognised in front of Mackay,” she said.

“Some of these people have just grown so much, with their attitudes and everything.

“They are part of a team, they are made welcome, this is great and it’s wonderful.”

Mackay Cutters captain Jacob Carr said the event was a highlight of the home games.

“It went really well,” he said.

“Both sides played well and it was a tie for both sides.

“Everyone tried their very best and it was a really good game.

“I’m getting pumped up for the match with the Black Hawks on the 28th. They are on their way back for a shot at redemption.”
