MORANBAH’S massive RugbyRun solar farm is a technology test bed for the world’s largest alternative energy electricity generator – ADANI Green Energy Ltd (AGEL).

The RugbyRun solar farm is the size of 929 rugby fields, where

247,000 solar panels rotate to track the sun to maximise efficiency.

AGEL is testing 30,000 of its latest Indian-made solar panels.

This is because by 2025, AGEL has international plans to use solar and wind to produce enough electricity to power the eqivalent of almost every one of Australia’s nine million homes and apartments.

This raises the potential for every single Australian home to be totally powered by solar and wind power generated electricity.

However manufacturing industries require massive amounts of electricity night, as well as during the day, or when the sun isn’t shining and when there are only gentle winds during Queensland’s winter.

Currently this amount of electricity cannot be provided in batteries. For example, Elon Musk’s largest battery in the world in South Australia, is rumoured to only store enough electricity to power a small town for less than one hour.

ADANI has massive solar plans

The Innovation Fund has made a substantial impact in a short period, with investments in ambitious new businesses in mobility and smart cities, agriculture, the circular economy and industry.

RugbyRun’s five engineers already generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 23,000 regional Queensland homes per year, or 65 megawatts.

However, Moranbah’s RugbyRun is dwarfed by ADANI Green Energy Ltd’s latest and largest international solar electricity contract in India.

This is to build solar farms which will produce enough electricity in the Indian states of Gujarat and Rajasthan, to power the equivalent of 2.832 million regional Queensland homes per year, or eight gigawatts per year.

Overseas, AGEL is building the world’s largest hybrid solar/wind farm, which will generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 598,260 regional Queensland homes, or 1.69 gigawatts a year.

The speed of the world’s rapidly growing uptake of alternative energy, which is increasing at multiple rates, is astounding. This is especially so when considering that ADANI built its first solar project in 2015 and its renewable energy portfolio already currently exceeds the total US solar capacity in 2019.

In 2016, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) gave $100 million in grants to 12 large-scale solar farms in a competitive bidding process.

Two additional projects did not receive funding but signed up to ARENA’s knowledge-sharing obligations, which created 14 large solar farms that generate 603MW.

In addition, the Federal Government’s Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) has a Clean Energy Innovation Fund, which is Australia’s largest dedicated cleantech investor and has invested $200 million in early-stage clean-technology companies.

The CEFC has financed 14 companies with more than $85.7m and the CEFC investment commitment is to loan $308m.

“This means it will produce fewer emissions when burnt to produce electricity, which makes it suitable for the new generation of more energy efficient coalfired electricity power plants in India which produce fewer emissions.”

Mr Boshoff said the clean energy communications and research firm Mercom Capital report also found AGEL had achieved top spot globally, as it is roughly 70 percent larger than the next-largest solar power-generation company.

“RugbyRun cost over $100M to build and employed 175 people, where work included tying 1.3 million galvanised zip ties for electrical cables and pre-drilling 6500 holes to support 247,000 solar panels.

“ADANI Green Energy Ltd has 54 international operational projects and 12 projects under construction in India.”

300 job vacancies in local coal mines DESPITE China’s boycott of Australian coal, there are more than 300 vacant coal jobs in the Mackay region.

In February 2021, North Queensland Bulk Ports exported 10.1 megatonnes of coal compared with 12.5Mt in February 2020.

On average, 76 percent of these coal exports were metallurgical coal which is used in steel manufacturing and 24 percent is thermal coal used for power stations.

Queensland Resources Council (QRC) Chief Executive Ian Macfarlane announced that Queensland’s coal workers have every reason to feel optimistic about their future.

“The jobs outlook for Queensland’s coal workers is positive, despite the challenges of China’s import bans and COVID-19,” Mr McFarlane said.

“In fact, a quarter of coal mining CEOs surveyed by the Queensland Resources Council expect to increase their workforce in Queensland this year.

“The Australian Bureau of Statistics has also found that for the 12 months to February 2021, Queensland coal mining jobs increased by 3,341 jobs – or 15 percent – to reach 26,418 direct jobs for the 12 months to February 2021.

“India’s steel-making capacity is expanding and so India is emerging as a growth market for Queensland’s metallurgical coal exports.

“The scale of planned expansion of India’s steel production capacity, together with the fact that a large quantity of India’s metallurgical coal imports is already sourced from Queensland, places Queensland in a prime position to meet this increased demand.

“This is expected to be large enough to offset, or largely offset, any potential reduction in demand for metallurgical coal from China. India’s demand for thermal coal is expected to grow by more than four percent on average over the next five years to 2026.”

THE WHITSUNDAYS will benefit from the travel bubble with New Zealand which starts on Sunday.

Whitsundays Tourism CEO Tash Wheeler said New Zealand was not always a strong market for the Whitsundays, but there are plans in place to attract tourists to the region.

“Consumer travel sentiments have changed over the last 12 months and this potentially gives us an uncommon opening,” Ms Wheeler said.

“We have plans in place to deliver marketing to key areas in New Zealand, where travellers are happy to take flights that may not necessarily be direct to get to their destination of choice.

“There is also potentially job seekers in New Zealand looking to relocate to Australia, so we will be looking at how we can target them with our current Work and Play campaign.

“After more than 12 months of border closures and pent up travel demand, Tourism Whitsundays believes we need to look at this as an opportunity

rather than relying on historical data. As an industry, we need to look at opportunities to work together, if we are going to gain traction in this market and also work with our partners at Tourism and Events Queensland and Tourism Australia.”

Mackay Tourism CEO Tas Webber believes that the opening of a Trans-Tasman bubble will bring a steady rise in the number of visitors to the Mackay region.

“Mackay Tourism welcomes the opening of the bubble between Australia and New Zealand from April 19,” Mr Webber said.

“We have a steady demand for Visiting Friends and Relatives (VFR) tourists from New Zealand, due to the regions strong corporate sector.

“We’re looking to take advantage of that demand and ensure that this benefits our operators.

“We look forward to welcoming international tourists back to Mackay and will work with our partners to ensure that happens at the earliest.”

Builders in demand but needing support

But they need support to ensure both industry and consumers get a fair go, due to price hikes, trade and material shortages.

Masterbuilders Deputy CEO Paul Bidwell has put out the call for more time to be given to regional builders to honour existing contracts.

“Roofing materials are just as hard to get, and timber and steel prices have jumped by more than 15 per cent.

Builders are in demand

“Delays in getting roof installers are at a critical level across the Southeast.

“They’re all busy with insurance work from a hailstorm out at Ipswich back in October, creating competition between the insurance builders and new home builders,” Mr Bidwell said.

Latest ABS figures show building approvals rose to 72.5 per cent in Mackay and Whitsundays in February, as the industry got back to work after Christmas.

New license app here

DRIVERS across the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday regions will have the option to store their license on their phones.

A Transport and Main Roads spokesman said legislation was passed on July 14, 2020 to provide legal authority for digital licenses to be used instead of just a physical license.

Queensland’s first Digital License App Pilot was conducted between March and September 2020 on the Fraser Coast.

“The pilot allowed residents to access their drivers licence, recreational marine licence and photo identification card on the app,” the spokesman said.

“The digital licence app includes security and privacy features designed to protect data against cybercrime and theft.

“The pilot concluded on 30 September 2020 with a customer satisfaction rating of 94 per cent.”

More than 750 residents and 120 businesses from Maryborough and Hervey Bay took part in the pilot.

AUSTRALIA has overtaken Thailand as the world’s second largest exporter of raw sugar.

CANEGROWERS Chairman Paul Schembri said that most Australians, including the Palaszczuk and federal governments, and some cane growers, will be surprised to know that Australia is such an important player in the world sugar market, sitting second only to Brazil.

“It is also not recognised that 85 percent of the Australian sugar crop is exported and that our sugar industry, which is mostly in Queensland, employs over 40,000 people,” Mr Schembri said.

“When Australian sugar mills fire up in June, growers will harvest around 29.5 million tonnes of sugarcane with 28 million tonnes of that in Queensland. This will produce around four million

tonnes of raw sugar earning $1.7 billion, where every dollar earned from sugar in Queensland has a multiplying effect and creates $6.42 in business activity.

“Brazil exported a huge 27.5 million tonnes of raw sugar last season, while in comparison, Australia exported 3.4 million tonnes, where every seven tonnes of cane produces one tonne of sugar.

“Thailand used to export five to seven million tonnes of sugar a year, but dry conditions and pressure to grow other crops reduced Thai exports to only 1.8 million tonnes.

“While in Queensland, government regulations have put canegrowers under enormous pressure when international sugar prices are around $400 a tonne, or about the cost of production.”

“A survey of our members shows trade and material delays, and cost increases are substantial issues for builders and trade contractors, off the back of the increased demand we’ve seen,” Mr Bidwell said. “A third of respondents told us they’re waiting more than a month for timber orders to be filled.

THE Australian Case IH Austoft 8810 sugarcane harvester has been named the winner in a harvester competition overseas.

This is a reminder of the proud history of innovation which has always existed in the Australian sugar industry, boosting our productivity and efficiency.

The first Austoft harvester was

originally built in the 1960s by the Toft brothers and cane growers in Bundaberg. It is one of a remarkable series of harvesting machines developed over the years by growers, including growers in the Mackay/Plane Creek region.

Importantly, this competition was held in Brazil, which is Australia’s largest competitor in the raw sugar export market - and indeed the largest raw sugar exporter in the world.

The Australian sugar industry has a good record of innovation in technology and our labour productivity is very high compared with other countries. Our clean, green and sustainable qualifications are also second to none in the world sugar market. But we cannot afford to rest on our laurels.

However, this new market is not supported by government policy, indeed in some areas actively thwarted by it. Yet scientists tell us sugar cane is far and away the best biomass feedstock in the world.

Moreover, the crop grows very well in this part of the world and is resilient to our variable climate.

And if you ponder carbon sequestration – we’re already doing it across thousands of hectares! In addition, we are well placed as a mature industry to participate in the growing bioeconomy, in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals; biochemicals; biobased fuels; bioplastics and other bio building materials.

Markets for these materials are growing at a fast pace.

Sugarcane ethanol is already a feedstock for bioplastics in countries such as Brazil, India and Taiwan.

Coca-Cola is already using PlantBottle packaging - plastic bottles made entirely from plant materials, including cane waste.

If you go to your local grocery store you will find single-use plates and cutlery made from sugar cane waste which has been given the tick as the preferred sustainable feedstock.

Even more interesting is the possibility that sugarcane could be used to make plant protein for hungry populations, if the world’s efforts to grow enough livestock cannot keep pace with demand.

Where is the Australian industry in this? For the industry – the whole industry – to be more profitable and sustainable, can we afford to continue to produce one

bulk export product, ignoring other markets where the cane may be higher value?

Leaders from across the industry have met to discuss these issues and develop a working industry vision for the future which can be taken to government. The leadership forum includes representatives of CANEGROWERS, the Australian Sugar Milling Council, Australian Cane Farmers’ Association and Sugar Research Australia.

Growers are invited to join the conversation on this and other industry issues at a series of informal farm shed meetings being held by CANEGROWERS Mackay Area Committee from Monday April 19 until Tuesday April 27.

Three local youths in parliamentary program THREE young people from the Whitsunday and Mackay regions have been made members of the 2021 YMCA Youth Parliament program.

Each year, the YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament gives 93 young people aged 1525 years an opportunity to learn about the Parliamentary process.

The Youth Parliament allows youth leaders to participate in a six-month program.

This program includes being part of a committee to propose law reform, participate in community consultations and debating bills in a youth parliament.

Whitsunday MP Amanda Camm was excited for the newly elected youth members.

THE Mackay South Sea Islander community has great historical importance to our region.

South Sea Islanders were brought to Mackay in the nineteenth century to help build the sugar industry.

Descendents of the original workers still live in the region and have their own community organisation, Mackay and District South Sea Islander Association

(MADASSIA), established August 14, 1994. There are a large number of Solomon Island and Vanuatu descendents living in our region, and a lesser number from other Pacific Islands.

The Association has a Protocols Guide which, amongst other information, outlines the history and contribution of the local Islander population.

The document provides a

glimpse of Islander history, culture and community interests.

“We are a proud shy race, but are hard workers as our contribution towards the establishment of the sugar industry will show,” the Guide states.

Islander contemporary culture is a mixture of old and new, developed along with the association with the wider Australian community.

“Community members howev-

er, still have strong ties with the islands,” the Guide explains.

The community has, and will continue to be, extensively consulted by academics running the Archaeology Collections and South Sea Islander Lived Identities project (see separate story on this page).

The study is offering further insights into the history of this vibrant local community.

Local South Sea Islander history under spotlight

By DAVID LORNIE THE history of Mackay South Sea Islanders is the subject of an ongoing Australian Research Council-funded project.

Archaeologist and senior Sydney University lecturer Dr James Flexner visited Mackay last week in preparation for an archaeological dig in July as part of a project called Archaeology Collections and South Sea Islander Lived Identities.

South Sea Islanders were brought to Mackay in the 1860s as a cheap source labour for the sugar cane plantations.

Their history is not without controversy.

“Part of the story is the plantations themselves and part of the story is also after the White Australia Policy in 1901,” Dr Flexner told this newspaper. “South Sea Islanders were marginalised from the plantation economy and pushed out to those riverbanks and up in the hills. So, telling a bit of that hidden history is also I think a really important part of what we can try to contribute.”

Working Since 2016 “We’ve been working on the project since 2016 but officially since 2018. The idea has been driven by a collaboration particularly between myself and two curators at the Queensland Museum.

Imelda Miller – who is herself a South Sea Islander woman with family ties to Mackay and Rockhampton – and Geraldine Mate. And a number of other academics from other universities around Australia.

“The idea is to do a collaborative project with the South Sea Islander communities around Mackay, looking into the objects, the places, the kind of stories they

hold about their history and who they are and where they come from.”

The researchers held a series of community meetings in 2018-19 through the Mackay & District Australian South Sea Islander Association (MADASSIA) to discover what community members were comfortable with and “drawing some boundaries around the project and identifying the sites we can work on when we’re doing field work.

“We’ve been up here (in Mackay) speaking to community members…and landowners, starting to get some of the practical bits and pieces in order so we’re able to come up here with students from the University of Sydney to do a program of archaeological excavations and surveys – and other kinds of analyses.”

Conversations The project initially came about after a conversation Dr Flexner had with Imelda Miller at the Queensland Museum and a few years later funding was secured to enable him to visit Mackay to conduct some scoping work.

Dr Flexner said that much of the current local landscape is a result of the original South Sea Islander labour from the 1860s.

“We’re starting to piece together that environmental history and the social history,” he said. “And really using material culture and architecture and the things that we find in the ground to tell that story became a really exciting idea.”

The project group successfully applied for a larger grant through the Australian Research Council and have been building local community relationships whilst focusing in on particular sites to work on.

“People know obviously where their ancestral places were,” Dr Flexner said.

“A few people in the South Sea Islander community have guided us to particular places and said, ‘Grandma used to live here’ or ‘there used to be a campsite over there’. A lot of the mills that still run today, the core of those is actually some of the historical mills that were built in the 1880s and 1890s. But obviously we can’t do our work in a working industrial site, so it’s about identifying a couple of those mills that are abandoned and are now kind of industrial ruins, where you actually have a bit more room to work.

One of the key sites the team has identified for excavation is the old Homebush Mill.

“There’s an industrial remnant, there’s probably going to be remnants of the old workers’ cottages, including the South Sea Islander cottages. And a few other things around the landscape we can work with,” Dr Flexner said.

Organic materials such as wood and other plant matter don’t last too well in the tropical climate but the team will able to gather insight about people’s lives through particles left in the ground.

Microscopic Remains “One of the things we’re going to do is look for microscopic remains that might tell us about the kinds of plants people were using – whether it’s what they’re planting in their gardens, what they’re eating, yams, bananas,” Dr Flexner explained. “It can also be other kinds of economically useful plants. What they’re using to construct their houses, what they’re using for cordage, all that stuff which might relate to what they’d traditionally use back in the islands or they’ve adapted

“Are they using the same kind of ceramic dishes as their overseers might be using, are they drinking tea out of tea cups, what kinds of medicines are they using, are they drinking alcohol? All of that stuff will be made apparent through these little traces of material that is still in the ground.”

Ethical Guidelines The group have drawn up ethical guidelines to ensure respectful recording and usage of South Sea Islander community oral and written histories.

“We are making sure they understand what the research is for and what we might do with their stories – and really letting them control that process,” Dr Flexner said. “People can tell us ‘I want

you to record this but I don’t want it to be public’ or they can say ‘I think this is a really important story and I want you to put my name to is so people know that it’s my story’. And that’s really depends on the person and working with them – and being respectful. Even though it sounds complicated, it’s just basic human ethics and kindness.

“One of the things that became apparent early on in our conversations with community is, people repeatedly said, ‘well no-one knows our story, even our kids don’t really know where they come from, what that history is’.”

Dr Flexner is planning to return to Mackay at the end of June with a group of “as many as 20” university students to hold an field school and conduct some archaeological site work for the project.

MARS cares for lost, lonely animals MARS (Mackay Animal Rescue Society Inc) celebrated its tenth birthday earlier this year.

MARS is a local not for profit charity run by members of the community dedicated to helping the dogs and cats of Mackay and surrounding districts.

When it was realised that the region was lacking an outlet to assist in the rehoming of pets MARS became a reality.

Since the incorporation of the charity in 2011, MARS has rehomed thousands of dogs and cats who had found themselves in need of a warm bed, veterinary care and a safe home.

Working as a foster carer-based rescue, all animals are placed into carers homes and not a shelter. During their time in care, they receive all vet work and a loving home environment while awaiting adoption.

MARS have a goal to reduce the numbers of unplanned litters within the region and have implemented a Last Litter Program whereby the cost of desexing is covered for the owners. Then the litter is taken in to MARS care for all vet work, again reducing the number of undesexed pets within the region.

MARS President Peta Kelly says the charity would not be what it is today without foster carers. She said MARS are always needing more carers.

“The more carers, the more animals in care we can help,” she said. The goal of MARS is to continue providing a service to the community for many years to come and will achieve this with continued fundraising efforts and raising awareness of the group to the public.

ZEAK Tass saw the Rona headlines and decided to 86 it back to his hometown.

A true artist will always want to give back to his community and Z is more than doing his fair share to make Mackay as high-kicking as possible. The young price of the pirouette cut his professional teeth in Paris and his training by the magnificent Leisa Payne is crazy evident.

Leisa Payne has been a driving force in dance education demanding nothing but perfection for many years to great acclaim. Zeak started the Contemporary Ballet Youth Company Z following the trailblazing Lynette Denny who created the Young Dancers Company many years ago. Fostering local dancers to achieve more than Eisteddfod medals, the superstar recently choreographed a reimagined production of Romeo and Juliet at the CON to rave reviews.

The cast was led by Reggie Walker who is a true star in the making. A big year for Reg, he’s about to have every performing arts school in Oz drooling over him, will rock out the lead in Fame the musical and was the first person to be cast in Heading North.

Heading North is a new musical I am creating with music and lyrics by Graeme Connors and original script by S.K.Munt and soz, not soz that I don’t shut up about it. Reggie is a truly excellent human raised by great people and the lad comes from good stock with both his siblings working professionally in the arts.

The darling of the Aspire Performing Arts empire was also an original cast member of Matilda in Sydney and A Chorus Line for Red Giraffe Theatre. Shontae’ Minniecon, one of Ms Bishops angels from Dance Express who also starred in Matilda professionally is set to play the featured role of Dawn specifically written for her.

the QLD Ballet in Coppelia was an easy casting decision.

Rounding out the younger cast is Grace Bow who trains at Fame will have her professional debut.

With nepotism high on my agenda and my money on the line, the decision was easy to make casting four of the most talented tweens in QLD. The Whitsunday Arts Festival is back this year and Jess Begun has taken over the reigns as Artistic Director. Founding darling and all-round jazz lady – Cathy Knezevic who was the genius behind the original festival will be taking a much-needed break in the shade, being magnificent as usual. I’m jumping on board the festival train again producing a cabaret show to conclude the festival and it looks like the most handsome devil in cabaret, Helpmann award winner Michael Griffiths will be swinging his microphone round Airle to the delight of anyone that has the pleasure of hearing his beautiful voice or seeing his dashing keyboard stylings.

Michael destroyed the Dispensary in the inaugural Mackay Cabaret Festival I produced and having a star of Mr Griffiths stature is a bloody big deal for all of us.

Margaret Harvison is one of the greatest singing educators and cultural contributors Mackay could be honoured to have as our own. Growing up, I always ached to get a nod of approval from Mrs Harvison after I would sing, and she never gave out praise unless it was truly deserving. As an adult, it was a pleasure to be an invited guest vocalist with the Mackay Choral Society in a mega affair at the MECC. A life member of MMCP and recently awarded the medal of the Order of Australia, Margaret is integral to why the Mackay Choral Society is known throughout Oz as a knock-out choir.

Looking for something rad to do that supports the arts in town, make sure you get tickets to Mama Mia, The Big Bad Mouse, Haunt, Icons of Stage and Screen or The Base Coats single launch. Oh and the Tap Pack lads are coming to the MECC soon and those boys are out of control awesome.

China in your shop Check your cupboards and shed to see how much stuff is ‘Made in China’.

With the serious sabre ratting in the South China Sea and around Taiwan, talk of sanctions and even war is escalating. China’s bans on Australian coal, wine and barley into their country has not, yet, seemed to stop the flow of goods from the Workshop to the World being sent to Australia.

While Australia’s agile exporters have found alternate markets for these products, so far, COVID has also interfered with the flow of high spending tourists and fee-paying students from China which the Chinese government appears to be limiting. So, it appears to be a one-way hit on trade – China bans hit Australia’s economic stability, while they keep selling ever greater amounts of ‘stuff’ to Australia to keep their factories running full bore.

REFRESHING FRONT PAGE IT WAS refreshing to read your front page article on Friday April 9, Corals ‘not so delicate’. Thanks to Dr Peter Ridd for his thoughts on coral and how they can adapt to conditions.

Tony Fontes from the Mackay Conservation Group claims that Dr Peter Ridd’s opinion “requires a huge stretch of scientific methodology and a fair amount of imagination”.

Precisely what the the reef ‘Scientists’ do.

We wonder if any of the hugely federally funded spy agencies in Canberra have run a ‘what if’ exercise, if war or sanctions slowed or stopped the flow of boatloads of stuff from China to our shops and stores. Ask the tourist operators locally about the impact of far fewer Chinese tourists – it’s painful.

We could all probably get by without the ‘Made in China’ coffee cups, branded caps and kitchen gee-gaws. But what about the electronics, from mobile phones to laptops to WiFi gadgets, all from China?

Then look carefully under the bonnet of your tractor, truck or car and imagine how well it would run without ‘Made in China’. Not just the filters and hoses, but also the hidden computer chips and sensors, without which anything other than the most old-school machine won’t work.

As long as farms and people live along the coast there will be run-off, especially up here with the rain we receive, going straight back into the ocean.

I believe farmers do a dammed good job looking after their properties. They have to, as it’s their livelihood and they have genuine concern for the environment.

Not to mention putting up with the very negative media coverage they unjustly receive.

MP Stephen Andrew’s interview was outstanding, calling for an independent reef verification. The amount of State and Federal funding (our money) that is given to things like the Reef 2050 Plan, $2 billion, you have to be kidding.

The reef has been there for millions of years and it’s done quite well looking after itself. I remember the Federal Gov-

ernment who quickly allocated $444 million to the Great Barrier Reef Foundation just before he left office. It was pushed through so fast.

Who are they, what have they achieved?

Stephen informs us that the National Audit Office found the Foundation did not comply with normal transparency rules.

We all care about the reef.

It can get along quite well without interference, history has confirmed this.

Climate changes have been happening for millions of years and will continue to slowly change to the drum of Mother Nature.

Show us your tatts ANDY SAYS: I got this dreamcatcher tattoo three weeks ago in Mackay after going through a bit of a rough patch in both life and work.

For me personally, what this tattoo means is we have to filter out the good and the bad experiences in life and just apply them for what they are: lessons.

Life, in my own honest eyes and opinion, is just a series of problems – one after the other, seemingly never ending.

And forget using mobiles and internet. Having banned Huawei from supplying internet and mobile servers in Australia, the Government forgets that even the alternate European telecommunications suppliers have their equipment made in, you guessed it, China.

However, while life can be rubbish at times, I’ve come to realise it’s up to us to create something worthwhile out of it.

A colleague in Army procurement says that most of the new ‘Australian made’ defence vehicles would ‘grind to a halt in weeks’ without some crucial Chinese parts. Certain types of steel and fixtures necessary for hard working machines, from Army frontline vehicles to cane harvesters, are only sourced out of China (sometimes on a circuitous route via manufacturers in Europe, Brazil or USA).

Purpose should not be derived from our positions, the mortgage we’re paying off or the degree we may be working towards.

This isn’t an anti-Chinese rant, but an interesting ‘what if,’ given the tensions in Asia already hitting our tropical north region.

President Biden has set up a taskforce to look at this very issue and already the Americans are very worried.

But Australians also need to consider the broader context of whether we are too reliant on one supplier. Even peaceniks could just consider what would happen if a giant cyclone hit the crucial Chinese manufacturing centres Guangzhou or floods hit Chengdu.

There’s many great workshops and clever manufacturers around Mackay, but how long would they survive without the Chinese bits and bobs?

It might be worth looking around your kitchen, office of workshop and seeing how dependent you are.

So, I’ve come to realise its best to apply the lesson from what may be happening and just move on.

Besides, I will confess I do have a bit of an admiration for tattoos and find them to be an interesting artform.

It’s certainly one way for a person to express themselves, albeit a rather extreme way.

Feeding the chooks, Govt style Decades ago the late Sir Joh B-P used to “feed the chooks”, his colourful way of saying he briefed the media.

These days the “chooks”, us Queenslanders, are fed a completely different information diet, nd if we relied only on what all three levels of government provided for us in that field, we would starve.

Media Tart Peter Beattie developed the art of media management.

Captain Anna Bligh tried to improve on it. One Hit Wonder Campbell Newman didn’t even have enough time to understand it.

Now we are being given a very expensive master class in media manipulation by our omnipotent Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, with lessons being learned and strategies devoured and implemented by all government media units, even some in city, regional and shire councils.

Here’s an example. Last week we were told: “Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says she will ask Prime Minister Scott Morrison to hold a “national women’s summit” in the wake of a month of sexual assault allegations in Canberra.”

Same week, different day: “Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk will not detail sexual misconduct and bullying complaints involving ministerial offices ….. Nine News and Seven have obtained new figures showing Queensland public servants are facing sexual misconduct and bullying on a daily basis but disciplinary action is rare.”

See the ploy?

Put the focus on Canberra. Blame ScoMo for everything. Train the spotlights on “other people’s problems” but refuse to even dis-

cuss the same problems happening on a daily basis right here in Queensland. Unfortunately this same media manipulation tactic is being used throughout public administration and a mainly compliant media appears willing to accept this appalling anti-democratic assault on government accountability and transparency. Result?

It’s working perfectly because the bulk of the media is either not willing or not game to fight back. Of course the national broadcaster, Not My ABC, won’t even step into the ring when it comes to highlighting Queensland Government maladministration.

Taxpayers and ratepayers are financing governments to help cover up incompetence and, in extreme cases, corruption, through their media manipulation.

State and Local Governments employ far more journalists and “communications officers” than all media outlets in Queensland put together. The financial cost is enormous. The cost to good government is arguably even greater.

Government PR machines protect their patches in part by playing media outlets against each other, by playing favourites, and by sidelining journalists who dare to seek honest answers to legitimate questions.

Can you believe governments employ information officers to withhold information? That they employ communications officers to block lines of communication? That they employ media officers to thwart the media?

It may be a little dramatic to apply the mass media manipulation theory to all regional councils, but it is happening and the scale of the “crime”, no matter how small, does not mitigate the crime, especially when it adversely impacts good government.

I wonder why I suddenly remembered that (supposedly true) Ministerial quote: “I don’t tell lies. My Press Secretary does that for me.”

Vehicle crime warning VEHICLE crime across the Mackay region has come to the attention of police over the last five days, as they were called to investigate 34 incidents of vehicle related crime .

LOCAL BRIEFS

Items stolen from vehicles include mobile phones, cameras, computer tablets, purses, wallets and tools.

Some of the vehicles had their registration plates stolen too. The majority of these vehicles were unlocked or unsecured vehicles or vehicle keys were easily accessible.

Police continue to encourage community members to ensure your vehicles and keys are secure.

Police recommend the following simple steps: When you return home double check that you have locked your vehicle even if leaving it for a few moments.

Lock your doors at home so no access can be gained without a key. Hide car keys in a place that means they are not easily accessible

to a car thief. Fit one way screws to prevent registration plate theft.

Police are currently investigating all these matters and encourage anyone with information or vision to contact Policelink or Crime Stoppers.

Appeal for witnesses

POLICE have launched an appeal for any witnesses who may have seen a Grey Dual Cab Isuzu D-Max allegedly being driven dangerously through Mackay on April 7.

Highway at Farleigh around 10am on April 7th when it is alleged to have overtaken a vehicle at roadworks and proceeded through a red light.

At the time of the incident, the section of road was controlled by red traffic control signals and single lane traffic restrictions.

The vehicle is alleged to have deliberately struck the “stop on red light” road sign, forcing a traffic controller to take evasive action to avoid being struck by the vehicle.

Police are appealing for any motorists with dashcam footage or who may have seen the vehicle involved to contact Mackay Police to assist in this matter.

IT JUST keeps getting better in the upper Pioneer Valley and this coming weekend highlights much of the remarkable community work that has created this progressive dynamic.

Increasingly weekend visitors are taking the relaxing drive out into the Pioneer Valley and enjoying the wonderful scenery, great lunches and good times with family and friends.

This weekend starts on Saturday morning 17 April with the arrival of two Tiger Moths and numerous ultralights coming in to land on the refurbished Emergency Airstrip in Finch Hatton.

Watch for the road sign opposite the exit to Finch Hatton Gorge as you approach the township of Finch Hatton.

Please park responsibly well away from the verge of the Mackay Eungella Road so as not to impede flow through traffic. The light aircraft will be landing before 11am in order for the official opening o proceed unimpeded from approximately 12 p.m. when local ministers and dignitaries arrive.

Cattle Creek, Finch Hatton the small townships are less the 100km out of Mackay the necessity of having an Emergency airstrip is absolutely essential. Our unique area has been isolated many times due to cyclones, fires and floods and this vital lifeline exists to provide much needed assistance and supplies in these times.

Morris owner proud of his classic vehicles CARL from Mackay Classic Car Club is the proud owner of a 1966 Morris Minor Estate Traveller. He tells his story here: My first memory of Morris Minors was back in the 1950s when my father was working for Ashton’s Motors, the Nuffield dealer, in Lismore New South Wales.

I remember a trip up to Brisbane, some 150 miles to the north to bring back a new Minor for sale.

Dad then became a roadside service patrolman for the NRMA where he drove a WWII Jeep for a short time. This was soon replaced by a Morris LC5 truck with a collapsible towing jib on the back.

The garage at home always had a Morris, Wolesley or a Riley in for a valve grind or some other repairs. The family then transferred to Sydney with the NRMA and Dad drove a Morris J van as his service vehicle.

I purchased my first car in 1961. It was, of course, a Morris Minor, a Lowlight Tourer. I did want a Holden “Australia’s Own Car” but Dad insisted that I get a

Morris Minor. The Tourer unfortunately was smashed and I then bought a Series 11 four-door sedan. These cars were driven all over South Western NSW in my work.

Marriage and children followed so the need for a bigger car saw the end of the Minor era. For a while.

Some 20 years later I decided I needed a hobby, so I went looking for another Lowlight Tourer. I found one in 1987, a 1950 model.

I did a few repairs and the car performed very well. I sold this car in 2010.

I moved to Mackay in 1996 and drove the Lowlight up, a distance of over 1200 miles. It didn’t miss a beat.

The next year I became the proud owner of the Traveller. It still has the original English number plates attached, MGO 624D. The Traveller is my pride and joy.

I used it as my daily driver for about 15 years and for my parttime job. I have also driven it to the last four National Rallies in Adelaide, Hobart, Perth and Brisbane as well as to other rallies in

Sydney and Canberra. In total the Traveller has covered over 75,000 miles since I bought it.

To expand my collection I found a Series 11 Panel Van in Rockhampton which cost me $50.

I brought it home, with the help of Col Robbo, and when we opened the back we found a whole heap of parts - including gearboxes, suspension, batteries cylinder heads, radios etc.

I charged one of the batteries and put it in the panel van and it started. I registered it and used it for about a year and then decided to do a full restoration.

Big mistake!

I realised after several years that I am not a car restorer, just a maintainer. The panel van went to a good home.

After much consideration and thought I came up with some highly unusual and original names for my toys, and they are: “The Morry”, for the Tourer.

“The Woody”, for the Traveller “The Van”, for the Panel Van Great names don’t you think?

Mackay blessed with fantastic weather

THE past weekend saw Mackay blessed with a run of fantastic weather to close out the last weekend of the Easter holidays.

The change brought northerly winds varying 5-10 knots which made more than ideal conditions for heading offshore.

The boat ramps at Mackay harbour and Seaforth were very popular through out the weekend with many fishos struggling to find a car park before heading out wide.

The islands east of Mackay and the shipping channel fished well with some great catches of

Nannagi/grassy sweet lip and coral trout being taken.

Big tides over the weekend also made ideal conditions for getting a feed of mud crab, places like constants creek and Murray creek produced some top quality mud crabs.

Yet again the great work of VMR Mackay was noticed with 12 calls for help made over the weekend, if you haven’t already be sure to sign up as a member.

The small fee paid offers great peace of mind when heading out fishing.

Another gorgeous weekend ON THE weather front: Another gorgeous weekend. There are possible showers on the coastal fringe. Max temps inthe low 30’s. Min overnight temps still sitting around 20. More showers set to return next week.

Out on the water: SE’ly 15-20knots. Seas around 1m tending to 1.5m offshore. Swell below 0.5m. There has been a bit of a chop on the morning incoming tide. Just keep that in mind.

It was all action on Saturday whem Cutters took on the PNG Hunters

Gritty Cutters lose to PNG THE Mackay Cutters showed guts and heart in a scrappy clash against the PNG Hunters, going down 26-14 on Saturday at Mackay’s BB Print Stadium.

A large contingent of local PNG supporters urged on the Hunters as they unleashed three tries in a 14-minute blitz in the first half to take control of the match.

The victory mirrored the Hunters’ remarkable start to the year as they overcame some early setbacks to register their second win from three matches.

Winger Brendon Gutuno broke his arm in just the third minute, forcing the Hunters into a quick reshuffle before Mackay opened the scoring six minutes later with a try to centre Michael Bell.

But the Hunters began to make ground through the middle as captain Ila Alu led the charge and his teammates followed.

By JACOB CUMNER ROUND one of the Hastings Deering Colts competition had action galore for rugby league fans over last weekend as the QCCS Cutters went up against the Western Mustangs in the opening game for the Cutters vs Hunters match up.

This was pre-game entertainment at its finest as the two young teams clashed in a power struggle that would have matched that of the more senior teams.

The first try of the game went to the Cutters, splendidly placed by Luke Webley. Number Seven Henry Head took the conversion however the ball was taken by the wind resulting in an unsuccessful conversion, leaving it at 4-0 to the Cutters.

With 29 minutes left in the first half the Mustangs made their approach for a try but were unsuccessful due to fantastic defense by the Cutters.

The Cutters pushed the Mustangs back but a fumble with the ball saw the Mustangs in possession of it as they closed in for the first try of the evening.

The conversion however was unsuccessful, leaving the teams tied up 4-4.

The Mustangs continued to probe the Cutters defense, pushing the boys back.

Cutters managed to get the ball back in their hands and power through the opposition like a steam train as the boys came through for another try.

The conversion was taken by Head and was a success.

putting the ball over the line, taking the conversion successfully. Scores were once again tied up, however it was short lived due to the Cutters’ number 5 Flynn Camilleri scoring a touchdown with another unsuccessful conversion attempt by Head with 12 minutes left in the first half.

The Cutters seemed to be on top of their game as they kept pushing the Mustangs back before a power struggle in the middle of the field led to an interception.

Although the Mstang’s defense was strong, with the Cutters pushing them back it was all they could do to hold on to the ball as the timer ran down to half time.

A try came again for the Cutters with Head slipping through the Mustang’s defensive line with only two minutes left of the first half of the game, followed by a successful conversion leaving the score 20-10.

The next try came from the Cutters in the second half again drawing first blood with an amazing run by Head bringing the score 28-10 with 27 minutes left in the game.

The Mustangs tried to rally and make a stand against the Cutters and force their way through their defenses.

However, the Cutters’ defensive line was too strong to breach with another try for the Cutters coming from Keanu Wainoho-Kemp.

This was followed by another try to Brenton Baira which he converted, bringing the score 38 to 10.

The final try came from the Cutters after a scrum, bringing the final score to 44 to 10 to the Cutters.

Samuel Yegip (13th minute) and Sylvester Nano (23rd minute) scored tries to push the Hunters ahead before Junior Rau’s 27th minute try gave the visitors a handy lead.

Hunters coach Matt Church was praised his team’s onfield performance on Saturday.

“We’re very pleased with our start because we knew we faced a challenge given the unusual circumstances for us this season,” coach Matt Church said.

“We’ll never use that as an excuse though – we know that means nothing when we take the field.

“I was proud of the way our guys stuck to their task. We wanted to challenge them through the middle and we were able to change some angles and get some nice results.”

Gutuno, who scored three tries against Ipswich the previ-

ous week, was taken to hospital, where doctors diagnosed a broken arm that will sideline him for several weeks.

His teammates dug deep though, withstanding Mackay’s fast start to the second half that pushed them within touching distance with a 16-8 scoreline.

But tries to Watson Boas (59th minute) and Edwin Ipape (68th minute) moved the Hunters clear before a late Mackay try through Kyle Krisanski-Kennedy.

The Hunters also rued some tries disallowed on the final pass that would have sent them further ahead.

“We really started to play well once we overcame those setbacks and that enabled us to take the lead,” Church said.

“The Cutters never go away – they always continue to challenge – so we had to keep playing well.

this competition so we’ll get another good idea of where we’re at when we take on the Sunshine Coast next Saturday.”

Saturday’s win means the Hunters moved into the Intrust Super Cup top four whilst Cutters remain winless.

The Hunters will host the Falcons at Runaway Bay while the Cutters will travel to Rockhampton to meet the Capras in Rivalry Round with both teams seeking their first win of the season.

Mackay Road Runners celebrating 45 years this month

THE Mackay Road Runners Club is hosting a fundraising event on Sunday May 16 in memory of Shawn Claydon.

Shawn was a legendary Mackay Road Runners champion runner, club memberand Treasurer, who passed away 30/8//2018. He was only 50.

The Club Championship 10km race is named in his honour. This is the third year ther event will be held.

The club is also celebrating its birthday this month.

The 45th club anniversary was recently celebrated at the residence of Life Members Paul and Janelle Tilse in West Mackay.

On hand to join in the festivities were Life members Merv Shields who holds the coveted

ners from struggling in the testing conditions. Congratulations were in order for all runners as they were sent off via a handicap start from timekeepers Julie Whibley and Arthur Dick.

This means that the slower runners were sent off earlier than their faster counterparts. This format can be quite entertaining as runners chase down the field in order to gain more handicap points by where they are placed as they cross the finish line.

Junior runners Millie Bishop, Alex Couldrey and Hamish Donnollan had a great outing as they easily outran many of their more experienced peers.

Millie is proving to be quite a natural talent as is Alex and Hamish as they race very competitively for their ages. Excellent

Mackay Road Runners to host fundraiser member #1 bib and his wife, Wendy registered in at #4. Life Member Judy Zahn was joined by her husband Gordon as well as local running stalwarts, Jan Smith, Stuart Sprott, Jim Ford, Martin Lambert and Carmel Mahon.

Meanwhile, West Mackay residents were treated to a running spectacular as runners followed the out and back 5km loop course on the concrete pathways from Johnson Street towards Archibald Street roundabout at Paget.

Runners were definitely challenged in both 5km and 10km events as the humid conditions and blazing sun were still on high at 4.30pm.

Most of the course had a consistent amount of shade protection from tree- lined Paradise Street, however this did not prevent run-

as well as fruit and sweets provided by Jo Hughes, Wendy Shields and Lainie Tilse.

The club also arranged a huge birthday cake with the club’s miniature logo figurine, the infamous Road Runner Bird.

Thankfully no sign of the asneaky coyote anywhere in sight!

The club offers thanks to Julie and Arthur for their amazing work in registering runners and timing them which can be very difficult as a multitude of runners cross the finish line at once.

This weekend’s Eungella Trail run will have a variety of events including tonight’s Friday night run, kids race and senior race tomorriow.

Runners and their supporters have already booked their ac-

commodation for a great family weekend with nature at one of the region’s most spectacular destinations.

Race Directors Jaylene, Ainslie, Matt, Thomas and crew have been madly organising the event for some months now, therefore, any voluntary assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Runners are also reminded to carry their own hydration when running club events which are under 12km especially in the very humid conditions that are prevailing at present, whether in training or racing.

A successful recovery is dependent upon consistent mindfulness of pre and post hydration foods and fluids, with sensible training and rest periods.

TERM two of junior golf commenced on Sunday but due to school holidays only seven players attended Normally there would be 20 players per week.

The club has three-hole players, six-hole players and nine-hole players.

A few players have already gone from three holes to six holes and six holes to nine holes. This is a great achievement as they have only been playing for eight weeks.

BMX set to ramp up THE Sarina & District BMX Club 2021 year is about to ramp up with some exciting events scheduled.

Their Come and Try/Family Fun Day is on May 8 from 12pm.

Riders from two years of age are welcome to come and participate and to experience the thrill of BMX riding and see what they have to offer.

Their Come and Try sessions are open to all ages, abilities and kids big and small. The club has bikes and gear available to use.

THe club is excited 2021 has them back on track once again

hosting events and opportunities for riders to compete at local, state and national events.

The club’s first open day for the year, the “Sarina Classic” will be on June 5.

This event is expected to attract riders from surrounding clubs as well as clubs all over Queensland.

Sport Briefs Golf winners PROSERPINE junior Corey Stroud was the April monthly medal winner with a magnificent score nett 54, 16 shots clear of the next best score of 70 nett, the Phil Batty in the B grade, and 20 shots ahead of dad Adam. The A grade winner was Karl Kirkwood 71, on a count back from Scott Lee. Runner up to Phil in the B grade was Tony Sellwood, 71, and C grade runner up was Col Gilham, also 71 nett. The place getters were Dan O’Donnell, and Ross Meade,73, Gary Scotford and Adam Stroud 74, followed by Rob Smith, Darren Reynolds, Peter Lewis and Jon Miller, all on 75.

Darts back Everyone came back fresh and ready in Airlie darts after the Easter break. There were three clean sweeps along with some heavy scoring and some nice check outs. Jamie Maher, Jamie Woods and Rooster Coutts all secured six-nil victories and claiming valuable bonus points.

That bonus point for Woodsy means he’s now level on points at the top of the table with Gene Birse on 14pts. Birse scored heavily on the day registering 5 tons, 4 x 140’s and a nice 180 in his win over Seumas Rose.

Jamie Maher snuck into the top 4 with a bonus point win over Dick O’Hara. Joe Wilson got back to winning ways hitting 13 tons in his 6/3 win over Jason Rockstroh. And Andy Peel hit a 118 check out in his narrow 6/5 victory over Ross Gallichan.

Comp bowls PROSERPINE competition bowls on Saturday Scott Hamilton defeat Todd Leys 27 to 11 in a Championship Singles match and I a “B” Grade singles match, Dale Haack defeated Marty Flowers 25 to 23 in a great game. Wayne Handley proved too good for Scott Hamilton winning 25 to 13 and Dale Haack had another battle on his hands against Todd Leys but won 27 to 18 in the “B” Grade Singles. Sunday Morning saw Gavin Noonan and Brett Saroglia play Steve Summers and Marty Flowers in the “B” Grade Pairs. Gavin and Brett defeated Steve and Marty.

Wheeling their way to sporting success

By JACOB CUMNER THE faint sound of squeaking shoes and thudding of the iconic orange basketball was oddly absent as I walked into Mackay Multi-Sport Stadium. In its place was the strange noise of wheels squealing around.

“You must be Jacob,” Mackay Machines Coach Peter Sumpter said as he approached me. The team of four athletes behind him caught my eye, slamming their wheelchairs as they competed to sink as many buckets as they could.

This was the first time I had seen the spectacle of wheelchair basketball firsthand.

I had only ever heard about it on the radio or read about it online, so my eyes were drawn to the players drenched in sweat as they sped around the court.

As they dribbled the basketball, I was struck by the remarkable speed and precision with which they were able to maneuver while still maintaining ball control.

“Would you like to give it a try?” Peter asked, smiling.

Success at meet

IT WAS another successful day for John Manzelmann’s Rocket Lodge at Saturday’s Home Hill meeting.

The Mackay trainer took only a small team of seven to the races on April 10, but it turned out to be a winning afternoon, with two winners and a first four in a situation he believes he has only done twice before.

Race three, a 1180m Maiden Plate had just four runners, with Manzelmann training all four horses. The race was won by Ready Betty who started odds on with the local bookies. The threeyear-old filly beat Mishani Fortune by under a length, with that pair gapping the other two stablemates by seven lengths; In Memory Ofa Mate and Ginger Bicky.

Manzelmann recalls training every runner in a race at just Mackay and Yeppoon prior to Saturday.

The following race saw the Open Sprinters do battle over 1000m and it was another Rocket Lodge victory with the team’s seven-yearold gelding Raiden saluting the judge at a juicy $6 for winning punters.

“He (Raiden) will probably have a start next Tuesday at Mackay and then be aimed towards the heats for the Battle of the Bush,” said John’s partner and cotrained Jade Doolan.

Raiden was a runner up in the Country Stampede Final at Doomben, so he is no stranger to country finals.

The old timer was rewarded with one of his favourite routines on Monday with a day at the beach which keeps him happy and easy to train.

Townsville Cup winner, Shiranda, didn’t beat a runner home behind Raiden on Saturday, but that was no surprise to the team but they left with their heads high.

The 1000m was always going to be too short for the stayer but he had a nice hit out and is right on track for the fast-approaching winter carnival. Bowen will host races on Saturday.

Redbacks in Brissie MACKAY Redbacks Inline Hockey team travelled to Brisbane and played Inline Hockey over the four Easter days.

Players from all age groups competed in the U9/11, U13 and U15/17. Also present were Senior Division One and Two. The team thanked the Queensland Government for the grant which enable them

to purchase an equipment trailer to transport all the players’ equipment.

They also sent aa big thanks to all who supported them in both their Christmas and Easter raffles, along with donations and sponsors who helped to purchase the club new uniforms consisting of jerseys, cover pants and polos shirts.

Pony Club president still competing

By JACOB CUMNER MACKAY Local News caught up with the Mackay North Pony Club’s president to gain some insight about her experience growing up around horse.

Sonya McLeod has been the club’s president for the last three years.

She started at pony clubs when she was 10 years old, but had been riding previously.

“I have been riding since I was about three, around my grandparents’ farm” she said.

The young woman started her riding career through pony club in Dysart and eventually moved on to Mackay North Pony club.

Sonya’s biggest influence came from Olympic Champion Guy Creighton. She remembers as a young girl being taught by him and watching how he use to ride.

“To this day I am still privileged enough to receive lessons from him when he holds clinics here in Mackay,” she said.

“I remember watching the 1984 Olympic show jumping on TV and I locked my brother outside so I could wait and watch Guy Creighton ride… I got in a bit of trouble when mum and dad go home but it was totally worth it,” she added.

One of her most memorable achievements would have made any young horse rider proud as she was selected to try out for the Junior Olympic Squad when she was 14 years old.

Her favourite activity is “show jumping. I am still actively competing Show Jumping, dressage and low-level Cross Country,” she said.

Sonya enjoys watching all divisions in the sport.

“I thoroughly enjoy watching both – the younger riders achieve their goals. The smiles on their faces makes it all so worth while.,” she said, adding “the most experienced riders are great to watch as they can make it look seamless and you can always learn something by watching them.”

When asked what is it about the pony club she loves, her answer again was simple and sweet, saying that she loves every aspect of it.

“It has taught me so much about horses and myself. And now I have the opportunity to pass this knowledge, support and enjoyment onto our next generations,” she said.

“Being grassroots Pony Club teaches the foundation skills that can be carried over into any discipline,” she said.

“Pony club is great for everyone who loves horses, whether

Sonya and Beetle you like to ride, learn or compete,” she added.

In Sonya’s opinion teaching these skills is amazing as people are so keen and love having fun.

“As a coach you have to understand that each person interprets what you say in different ways

and everyone goes at their own pace “she said. “Most importantly you must make sure they are safe and from there their skills will grow.

“Along with all the other little champions I’m very privileged to be able to be teaching my grandchildren to ride,” she said.
