ADANI Going Solar

By JOHN BELL

MORANBAH’S massive RugbyRun solar farm is a technology test bed for the world’s largest alternative energy electricity generator – ADANI Green Energy Ltd (AGEL). The RugbyRun solar farm is the size of 929 rugby fields, where

247,000 solar panels rotate to track the sun to maximise efficiency. AGEL is testing 30,000 of its latest Indian-made solar panels. This is because by 2025, AGEL has international plans to use solar and wind to produce enough electricity to power the eqivalent of almost every one of Australia’s nine million homes and apartments.

This raises the potential for every single Australian home to be totally powered by solar and wind power generated electricity. However manufacturing industries require massive amounts of electricity night, as well as during the day, or when the sun isn’t shining and when there are only gentle winds during Queensland’s winter.

Currently this amount of electricity cannot be provided in batteries. For example, Elon Musk’s largest battery in the world in South Australia, is rumoured to only store enough electricity to power a small town for less than one hour. CONTINUED ON PAGE TWO
