QUEENSLAND’S Coal Mining Board of Inquiry has reported that over 50 percent of Queensland coal mining jobs are labour hire.

Workers under labour hire are engaged through a labour firm under different conditions than permanent employees. They also have less job security. Different pay rates and conditions for the same work were the highlight of a meeting at Komatsu in Paget addressed by Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese.

MACKAY’S proud indigenous communities came together in record numbers to celebrate NAIDOC Week, marking week’s end with a march through the city followed by a day-long festival in Queens Park.

The day attracted first nations people from throughout the region and further afield, with stalls, a symbolic flag raising,

traditional dances and the introduction of the elected Mr and Miss NAIDOC for 2021.

The Mackay NAIDOC Committee Chairperson Rebecca Budby and her team began organising the event at the beginning of the year, following the cancellation of last year’s event due to COVID. “Last year it was postponed, then we had like a virtual one in

November but it’s nothing like what we have had to organise for today,” Ms Budby said.

“I don’t think I have ever seen such a big crowd. But I think because we missed the NAIDOC last year everyone’s decided to show up today.”

The event included dances by indigenous dance groups, such as the Wakka Wakka tribe who travelled from Cherbourg and Brisbane for their performance.

The celebration also marked the debut of the 2021 Mr

NAIDOC Joshua Yow Yeh and Miss NAIDOC Jayla Yasserie, who were chosen for sharing what NAIDOC meant to them.

“We went to an interview night and we got asked a series of questions about general cultural knowledge and what NAIDOC means to us and what the theme of NAIDOC means to us,” Mr Yow Yeh said.

“And they elected the Mr NAIDOC and Miss NAIDOC the next night after that.”

mittee was overwhelmed with support from the Mackay community.

“Being Heal Country as the theme this year, I think it’s brilliant that we’ve had so many people come and make those connections with family that they hadn’t seen for months or weeks, as well as with the country.” said Chairperson Rebecca Budby.

“I would like to thank all the stallholders for supporting the event this year.”

TWO people have been taken to Mackay Hospital, both in a stable condition, following an alleged assault in Andergrove overnight. A man, believed to be in his 20s, was treated for head injuries and a female, also reportedly in her 20s, was treated for back injuries.Paramedics and Police responded to the incident, at a location off Bedford Road, at 1.52am on Tuesday.

Plant theft

Police are seeking assistance in relation to the location of plant equipment which, on June 8, was stolen from a construction site on the Bowen Developmental Road, Mount Coolon.The equipment cannot be lifted by hand, and would require machinery to remove. FROM PAGE ONE Frighteningly, he was oblivious to what was happening until he was woken up by his distraught mum, who had arrived home around 4am after night shift, to find her house broken into.

“The scariest thing is to probably know I was in the house alone when they were in my house – and in Mum’s bedroom,” Taylor said.

“To wake up and see my mum in distress was probably one of the hardest things.

“To know that if she was home, it could have ended a lot differently … that she or I, myself, if I had woken up and confronted them, could have been hurt.”

It is believed the suspects entered through an unsecured back door as the

teenager slept and ransacked the Andergrove home, stealing many belongings including family heirlooms and his car.

Just two months ago, Taylor’s parents had gifted him the car for his birthday.

The thieves had stolen fuel from multiple service stations while travelling north, but were intercepted by police in Bowen.

“I got my car for my birthday, so it is really special to me and now that we have got the car back, I just don’t think that it will ever feel the same.

“As we went to pick it up from the police station in Bowen I just didn’t feel comfortable hopping into a car that didn’t feel like mine.

“I was still buzzing that I got my Ps and that I could drive around. I felt so fortunate to have a car to be able to do

whatever I want with my friends.

“Having something like this happen to me definitely opened my eyes to always make sure that I am being as safe as possible whenever I’m doing anything.

“Not just by myself but with my friends and I’ll definitely pass that message onto them for when they go to get their Ps.” The family had previously felt safe in their neighbourhood and Taylor had never felt uncomfortable about being home alone while his parents were at work.

And while they have changed locks, added padlocks to gates and are just more safety-conscious in general about their home, he said his family refused to let the intruders get the better of them.

“It just makes me sick that people have

the audacity to do this.”

Time to mark graves of 33 orphans ground floor dormitory with a dirt floor for the children.

“The first three Nuns from the Sisters of St Joseph’s did not sleep on the ground and slept over one metre above the ground in a timber cottage and then on the first floor.”

“Technically many of these babies and infants were not orphans and came from destitute young families facing almost impossible hardship who were unable to care for children with just one parent.”

By JOHN BELL THE time has come to mark the graves of 33 babies and five-to-six year-old very young children, who died after living in appalling conditions at Mackay’s St Joseph’s Bucasia Merara Orphanage at Shoal Point.

Unlike airconditioned comforts in 2021, in between 1879 and 1885, 126 very young girls and boys under 12 years of age, where most were aged five to six, slept on damp, mosquito-ridden dirt floors next to the beach at St Joseph’s orphanage.

Mackay archivist and historian, Doug Petersen explained that 19 babies and very young children died at St Joseph’s orphanage, four died after being transferred to the Mackay Hospital from the Orphanage and another 10 children died within six months of being transferred from St Joseph’s Orphanage.

“Importantly, I may have found these dead childrens’ unmarked graves, which are recorded in the Queensland Government Valuer’s hand-drawn 1885 map, which circled cleared ground next to the beach opposite St Joseph’s Orphanage,” Mr Petersen said.

“It was not possible in the 1880s to know what exactly killed these babies and very young children and the cause-ofdeath on death certificates lists consumption and from illnesses that these children may have bought with them.

“However, other historians have suggested that damp living caused these very young children to die.

Diseases included pneumonia, malaria and hook-worm and St Joseph’s Nuns also suffered from malaria.

“This was because Mackay’s Bucasia

“There is evidence that wet sleeping conditions and constant mosquito infestations may have caused vapours from the swamp and malaria weakening conditions, which made these babies and very young children vulnerable to other illnesses.

“These included ‘anaemia or poverty of the blood which caused by long standing exposure to malarial poison,’ or mosquito bites and isolation of children with infectious diseases was not understood.”

EXCELLENT CARE Mr Petersen said Magistrate Mowbray visited the Bucasia Orphanage with

Mackay’s Dr Cutfield, but Magistrate Mowbray ‘was of the opinion that the care of the orphans was excellent’. However Mackay’s Bucasia Orphanage was forcible closed when Magistrate Mowbray was transferred to Bundaberg in 1887.

“Mackay said residents protested against the closure of St Joseph’s Bucasia Orphanage, as they had donated goods, materials and raised 400 pounds for the Orphanage.

“But Dr Cutfield reported that the children ‘had an unhealthy appearance and suffered a heart condition, which he believed came from a malarial disease from being located in a swampy area and suffered from ‘Malarial Poison’.

“The Orphanage consisted of a house for the priest to live in when he visited, a two-story dwelling for the Nuns and a

NO UNEMPLOYMENT This was because the state of Queensland, (prior to the formation of Australia in 1901) did not have unemployment, deserted wives and single parent’s pensions and so fathers whose wives died in childbirth and wives whose husbands died in tough working conditions, often sent their children to orphanages.

Mackay’s Police Magistrates Captain William Goodall and Thomas Mowbray were also Inspectors of Orphanages and St Joseph’s Bucasia Orphanage received a small allowance when Magistrates sent children to the Orphanage.

Historian and Archivist, Doug Pearson’s book about children at the Bucasia Orphanage is heartbreaking and is available for sale from The Mackay Local News.

In his tragic and well researched book, Mr Petersen described a family of four children sent to the Bucasia Orphanage, where only two survived.

“A police enforced inmate of Bucasia’s orphanage included a half-caste Aboriginal, Anthony Nebo. Anthony was arrested aged four under the letter, ‘Order In Council’ and sent to St Joseph’s Buca-

sia orphanage to ensure that he might not associate amongst the Indigenous population and his Indigenous mother.”

OTHERS WHO DIED Other young babbies and young children who died after being sent to St Joseph’s Bucasia Orphanage and buried next to the beach and across the road in unmarked graves at St Joseph’s Orphanage Cemetery include: n JOSEPH SMITH, who died aged nine, allegedly from heart disease. ‘Joseph had a habit of getting up at night, walking across a paddock to get in through a pantry window to steal good food and sugar and give scraps to the dogs, night after night until detected’; n ERNEST MAY who died aged three after suffering for a week from dysentery. Ernest was sent to the St Joseph’s Bucasia Orphanage ‘after being rescued from the hands of Chinamen with whom the mother was living’. ‘The child being the offspring of a white man would very likely be ill-treated’; n ALICE ARMSTRONG, 11, was sent from Rockhampton to St Joseph’s Bucasia Orphanage suffering from eye sores and farmed-out into service to work for Mr Fay at Pioneer Plantations.

‘A month later she was returned to the Orphanage as the young girl became extremely delicate and died six months later’; n WILLIAM BAKER was sent to St Joseph’s Bucasia Orphanage aged three and died three years. His father, Robert was a miner at Cooktown who agreed to pay one pound and ten shillings a month to the Police Magistrate after his 30-yearold wife Elizabeth died aged 30;

maid at Rockhampton; n FREDDY MANNAM, supposedly from Bundaberg and parents unknown; n JOSEPH RICHARDSON, aged four from a suspected eight-month long heart disease; n HENRY ROLES, aged six from Ravenswood who died from consumption; n WALTER ROLES, also from Ravenswood, died after a 12- months illness of dropsy or fluid retention; n THOMAS SIMMONDS, died aged three from croup. Croup is linked to diphtheria and influenza and n CHARLES TURNER, who died at just two. Charles and his brother George were admitted to St Joseph’s Bucasia Orphanage because their father had deserted his family and their mother was unable to support the children.

FATHER Pierre Bucas started Mackay’s Bucasia Orphanage shortly he arrived in Mackay in 1869 as it first priest for a flock of 300 residents.

Archivist and historian Doug Petersen explained that initially uncared for and destitute children were brought to the Sisters of St Joseph’s Convent in River Street in Mackay.

This prompted Father Bucas to buy 923 ha of land at Bucasia with his own personal funds, believing that this land would also be used as both an Orphanage and as Queensland’s first Aboriginal Reserve.

Father Bucas gave much to the Mackay region and he was well known for riding his horse across the Pioneer River each week, as he rode 17 kilometres from Mackay to Bucasia to check on St Joseph’s Bucasia Orphanage, which was built ‘on land surrounded by a swamp on three sides, with slab huts and uneven clay floors and the boys’ huts were originally thatched’.

In 1869, Father Bucas also started Mackay’s first school, which was then run by Mary McKillop’s Sisters of St Joseph from 1871, plus Mackay’s activist priest also started his own private hospital in Mackay.

Father Bucas was born in 1840 to a farming family at St Jean, Brittany in France and before becoming a priest, Pierre Bucas fought as a Corporal in the 1860 Papal Wars, in the International Catholic Volunteer Corps, until he was shot above the knee.

Five years later in 1865, Pierre Bucas was ordained as a priest in New Zealand, where he spent four years as a missionary for Maoris, before being

deported to Australia by the British Army, on suspicion of teaching Maoris how to use guns.

Father Bucas also started Queensland’s first Aboriginal reserve at Rosella and his plans for a 923 ha Aboriginal reserve at Bucasia ended when the Queensland Government gazetted an Aboriginal reserve at Cape Hillsborough, 30 kilometres north of Mackay.

However Mackay’s creative French priest’s wonderful contributions to the Mackay community were not smiled on by his Irish Bishop Quinn who was based in Rockhampton. In 1860, the Bishop sent Father Bucas to Cooktown and to Port Douglas as a missionary priest for the region, which included Cairns and the Palmer Goldfields.

Father Bucas was then made Pastor for Charters Towers, which was the largest parish outside Rockhampton and included Bowen, Ayr, Ravenswood and west to Cloncurry, until he returned as Parish Priest for Mackay in 1887.

The land for Mackay’s Bucasia orphanage was originally called Merara by local Aboriginals. However, Mackay residents called the area Kemps Beach after the local hotel owner of the Seaview Hotel from 1880 until 1900.

Then in about 1990, Mr John Downie bought land at Bucasia which was then called Seaview. However, in 1938, when a post office was being established, the Pioneer Shire Council changed the name to Bucasia to honour Father Bucas, as there was another Seaview in Australia.

No horseplay

A HEADSTRONG horse got the better of his handler, headbutting and sending him flying into the side of a truck.

The handler was flown to Mackay Base Hospital by the RACQ CQ Rescue chopper, which was deployed, to collect the injured man from Kemmis Creek, about 200kms west of Mackay,

by Mackay Hospital and Health Service.

The chopper landed at the scene about 11am Monday after being deployed by Queensland Health and the crew landed back at the hospital in Mackay within 90 mins.

The man was taken to hospital in a stable condition with a serious concussion, however he was not admitted and was able to be discharged later that night.

The horse was understood to have been spooked, as the handler, an 18-year-old man, was loading horses onto a truck. The man was

NEWS headbutted by the horse and then he also hit his head on the side of the truck being loaded.

Horse handling experts from throughout the region said while these incidents were not common, it was not unexpected for a horse to become spooked when being loaded into a float or truck.

Focused Equine trainer Nicole Wirth, who has been training horses in Mackay for the past six years said that horses can feel trap when being loaded on to floats.

“Methods to loading horses onto floats are quite complex,” Ms Wirth said.

“There is not one thing or another anyone could do.”

Ms Wirth said a trainer or handler had to firstly gain the horse’s trust and establish personal space between themselves and the horse, so the horse understood there was a boundary.

“The horse will then understand that butting into them is not an option,” she said.

Dancers take a bluewater fling MACKAY Highland Dancers marched and danced the afternoon away at the Mackay Scottish Blue Water Fling on Saturday.

The sound of the pipes and drums could be heard across the city from the Bluewater Quay.

The dancers from Mackay Highland Dancing Association which incorporates the two Highland Dancing studios in Mackay (International Dance Affair and Ceilidh Dance Studio) were Rebekah Harris, Lily Williamson, Amy Williamson, Lilly Forslund, Alicia Eden, Matilda Rowe, Annika Wallace, Adele Single, Alexia Single, Milly Shipston, Hayley Shipston and Eylar Dobbie.

Looking to regions in 2030

That is the question – or one of them, at least – that the regions’ leaders are considering as part of the Regional Development Australia (RDA) Greater Whitsunday Economic Development Roadmap.

The project, which is being facilitated by RDA chair Pierre Viljoen across two day-long workshops and two virtual sessions, aims to develop a strategy for the future around how best to market the region as a viable, sustainable and prosperous investment.

“We – this region – we are a good investment,” Professor Viljoen said.

“We have a high economic output and in a lot of ways we have been the Golden Goose – it is our region and its economy which has kept things going.”

Prof Viljoen said the level of engagement from the key stakeholders – who represented a full cross-section of industries from throughout the region – had been high, and there was a genuine investment in gaining clarity and a strategic direction around where the region would be headed and how its investment potential would be marketed.

“We have a very diverse range of thinkers in the room and there is a appetite for constructive and progressive ideas to be shared.”

But, from the broader community perspective, is it just another think tank or talk fest?

“No. this is about looking at the future of the region and developing a road map to assure real outcomes.

“We are having conversations all the time about the fact people will mention every other element of the periodic table but they won’t mention carbon or coal – so we need to have a strategy which enables us to move forward. To have a clear understanding of what the region could look like come 2030 and what the potential is.

“In this region, we know we are a good investment. We know we can say to investors that for every one dollar they spend they will get something like ten dollars back in returns.”

Job insecurity an issue FROM PAGE ONE This meeting came on the eve of a Senate Inquiry in Mackay this week into job insecurity in contract labour conditions at 44 coal mines surrounding Moranbah.

The ALP’s Candidate for Dawson and coal mining supervisor, Shayne Hamilton, said that it is important that laws are changed so miners doing the same work get the same pay.

“Komatsu is a good example of a worksite EBA or enterprising agreement where everyone is employed under the same conditions and is paid the same rate,” Mr Hamilton explained.

“However, at coal mines, casualisation has meant that miners are on different contracts and pay rates for doing the same work.

“Casualisation has become the new norm which means that people don’t have secure jobs.

“Miners with secure jobs will spend more money locally and grow our regional economy.

“Currently, there are examples of miners living in Mackay, Isaac and the Whitsundays, who

Shayne Hamilton’s comments have been supported by the President of the CFMEU Mining and Energy Queensland, Stephen Smyth.

Mr Smith said ‘labour hire is a business model used by big mining companies to cut costs by driving down wages and conditions and transferring risks onto workers’.

“Labour hire workers usually earn 30 to 40 percent less than

directly employed, permanent mineworkers, the union President said.

“Labour hire workers are often casual and have no job security.

“Mining companies prevent labour hire workers from organising for better conditions through enterprise bargaining by churning through contracts and keeping workers in fear they will lose their job at any minute.

“Coal workers and communities are paying a big price.

“Labour hire workers are treated as second class citizens on site, it’s hard for them to take leave for time with their family or get a loan.

“It’s hard for them to speak up, even about safety.”

Steve Smith added that “unfortunately, the Morrison Government has made the laws worse for casual labour hire workers and this will be a major issue at the next federal election.

“We need ‘same job same pay’ for labour hire workers to stop mining companies outsourcing jobs to save money.”

Federal Labor woos coal miners MACKAY residents and ALP members enjoyed a thoughtful question and answer discussion with the Shadow Treasurer Dr Jim Chalmers, State Mackay MP Julieanne Gilbert and the Labor Party’s candidate for Dawson Shane Hamilton.

Dr Chalmers explained that unlike the last federal election, Opposition Leader Anthony Al-

banese will avoid criticism by campaigning as a small target and only focussing on key issues affecting voters.

“I am abundantly pleased that Shane Hamilton, who is a very experienced local coal worker, has put his hand up to stand on behalf of the Labor Party for the electorate of Dawson,” Dr Chalmers said.

“I think that there is a real contrast to have someone who has driven three hours from the mine site to be here tonight, compared with Senator Canavan who dresses up like that and puts coal dust on his cheeks. And we all know how crucial mining resources and coal is for our economy.

“I want to thank Julieanne Gilbert for getting everyone

together as we always try and spend some time thanking our local branch members and supporters and people who are interested in the Labor Party.

“We do know sometimes how hard it is to fly the flag in regional Queensland and in places where we are sometimes successful but not always successful.”

Bid to oust Liberals

FEDERAL Opposition political heavyweights are flocking to Mackay and Moranbah in a desperate bid to win retiring MP George Christensen’s electorate of Dawson from the Liberal/National Party.

Last week the federal Opposition Leader, Anthony Albanese addressed public meetings in Moranbah and Mackay with Shadow Treasurer Jim Chalmers, where they highlight job insecurity in coal mining and lower pay and conditions for 50 percent of coal miners working for labour hire companies.

This week the Mackay and Isaac regions have been visited by Deputy Opposition Leader, Richard Marles and the Shadow Minister for Queensland Resources and for Northern Australia, Senator Murray Watt.

Richard Marles and Senator Watt highlighted acute skill shortages in the Mackay, Isaacs and Central Queensland regions.

Richard Marles and Senator Watt addressed workers meetings in Paget where they told workers that North Queensland has suffered from massive skill shortages, which they blamed on eight long years of funding cuts by the LNP. “Before the pandemic, right across Australia, the Federal LNP Government cut $3 billion from traineeships, apprentices and TAFE and these cuts have had a direct impact in the Mackay and Whitsunday regions,” they said.

“The Morrison Government’s own information highlights that the number of trainee and apprenticeships in the electorate of Dawson has fallen by a massive 31 percent. For example, the federal department of Education, Skills and Employment own figures shows that there have been 1,000 fewer local training opportunities in the electorate of Dawson in eight years from 2012 to 2020.”

Richard Marles said that it was no wonder local businesses in Mackay and Moranhah and nearby are facing a skills crisis.

“It is a crying shame that local businesses are desperate for skilled workers, because the Morrison Government has neglected the skills sector. It’s time the Government stopped taking regional Queensland for granted,” he said.

Was it when you went to see the Doctor? Maybe when you had surgery after running through a glass door which wasn’t open? That happened to my little sister but I’ll tell you that story another day.

No I mean giving the red stuff at the Sydney St Lifeblood Centre on Sydney Street.

That red stuff as I put it saves lives. A lot of lives.

On Monday I went down for my fortnightly visit to donate plasma, because of Uncle Covid we can’t donate blood here in Mackay. I donate because I want to save lives. It’s certainly been highlighted in my life recently as my Mum used plenty of bags of it before she passed away. My sister used it in her cancer battles and the list of recipients goes on.

We all know someone who’ll need this Liquid Gold now or soon, and who knows it may be you so why not jump on the Donation Train leaving Platform Number 1 today. Have you got your ticket yet? It travels first class from Sydney Street and it’s all done and dusted in an hour.

With our beautiful region sitting among the void of what seems to be the only part of Queensland our government wants to acknowledge and the other half that demands they deserve to be their own state we seem to be in the somewhat crossfire between fire and ice…quite literally.

Every year when winter rolls around we often find ourselves struggling to crawl out of bed and throw on a robe to boil the kettle to defrost ourselves and admire the thick layers of fog covering the cane fields and making the line markings on our roads practically invisible.

Unfortunately, all I can say about summer is that we resemble are half dressed ants under a magnifying glass. But then comes the hard part – “What will I wear today?”.

Or better still – “What’s going to accommodate to the fluctuation of our weather, so I don’t end up with the discarded layers of my outfit in the backseat of my car for three weeks?”

Last Friday, as I do every year, I gathered with my family to march in the NAIDOC Day parade from

Macalister Street to Queens Park (I know right, Me? Walking? Never!).

However, on this particular morning the weather was rather crisp, so it was a luxury to able to feel the warmth and rays of Vitamin D kissing your brow while you were wrapped in a jumper awaiting the event to begin.

As the march slowly started to make its way into the gates of Queens Park it was evident that many people had finally peeled of the many layers that were guarding them from the relentless chill of winters breath and had blossomed like flowers in the sun displaying the beautiful colours of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island printed clothing each telling their own story and exuding their pride in being first nations people.

As the family day proceeded and the sun climbed higher into the clear blue sky, so did the temperature.

This became more and more unforgiving as the lines of the food vendors grew and there was nowhere to find refuge from the sun while many were still in jeans or long pants.

However as the day rolled around to a close, the sun decided to hide behind the trees and the sea breeze from Town Beach started to make an entrance the blossoming flowers started to resemble that of native dried arrangements as people made special trips to their cars to get out their warm coloured winter outerwear they had not long prior gotten rid of.

So whether you identify closer with onions or Shrek how many layers do you think is enough? Is less more or not enough?

DURING this pandemic, many of us would have heard of The Great Reset, the 2021 theme of the World Economic Forum (WEF), describing the current pandemic ‘crisis’ as an opportunity to ‘reset’ the world’s economic, social and political agenda - from a capitalist model to a capitalist/Marxist model or what they call ‘stakeholder capitalism’.

The WEF is a group of wealthy and powerful world leaders from politics, big business, and NGOs including Prince Charles, Al Gore, Greta Thunberg, David Attenborough, Georg Soros, Chairman of the International Business Council, Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan, Head of the International Monetary Fund and even Greens Senator Sarah Hanson Young.

For years they have been trying to sell and market their agenda for change by influencing the policies of national governments.

The great policy reset!

In other words, an unelected global elite operating outside the law deciding for ordinary citizens how they will live, work, communicate and do business in the future.

Not only that, WEF leaders propose a fourth industrial revolution where the human person is redefined by advances in artificial intelligence, robotics, biometrics and genetic engineering.

Make no mistake, certain elites want full control over your private lives. They want the world to move from a financial profit model to a profit model based on human and social costs capital via social engineering.

The Davos Manifesto 2020 states a new measure of “shared value creation” should include “environmental, social, and governance” goals as a complement to standard financial metrics.

Some of the WEF’s dangerous ideas include having a universal basic wage, losing our democracy, legal rights and property rights and giving more power to unelected and unchecked global bureaucrats. A now deleted WEF video stated: “You’ll own nothing and you’ll be happy.”

“Whatever you want, you will rent.”

“You’ll eat much less meat, an occasional treat, not a staple.”

“Western values will have been tested to the breaking point.”

Horrible experience AS A MUM and as a member of the community, I didn’t know whether to be devastated or furious when I heard about what happened to Taylor Wild and his family.

And while I felt sick while reading Shakiera William’s story, in today’s paper, on Taylor’s horrible experience - my heart just broke for his poor mum!

She went off to work – night shift no less – thinking her son – and their home – was safe. She had absolutely no reason not to think that.

But to have these grotty little (I am going to leave to your imagination the many words I would use here) thieves come into their home and help themselves to whatever they could carry, as well as Taylor’s birthdaygifted car … it’s almost unimaginable.

I mean, how do you even think that could happen? The thing is, these evil little bastards don’t think like the rest of us.

They are entitled, nasty little brats who are probably so off their faces on God knows what that they just do this stuff for fun – and to hock off the gear they lift for money to buy more of whatever gets them high.

We don’t know for sure this is exactly what happened in this case, and we cannot pontificate further until these delights of society appear to have their day in court. But more often than not this is what seems to be underlining the acts of crime in the region.

“I was a single mum with five kids for seven years and my children gave me the courage to keep carrying on.

It’s true, these are the people who fall through the “cracks” of society. As kids they are the ones no one quite knows what to do with them, and as they grow, so does the chip on their shoulder and they lament and blame for whatever bad stuff happened to them in the past.

And by stuff, some of these people have experiences which would make your heart break, or that you wouldn’t believe.

“My children’s names are on the other side of my arm.”

Some are the product of generational influences of crime and bad behaviour. Yes, we need to support them and empower them.

Yes, we need to check ourselves and try not to judge – as hard as that is given the abhorrence of their acts, and knowing, as I blurted above, what nasty little horrors these people are.

Yes, there are also some incredible stories of people who have overcome the worst of circumstances to carve for themselves good and productive lives.

And yes, it is easy to blame the justice system for too lenient a punishment.

But as a community it is up to all of us to take responsibility for those who are likely to fall through the cracks and ask ourselves what WE can do to be part of the solution.

People like the Wilds are the human face of the scourge of crime which is happening on a daily basis throughout the region.

It’s not fair. It’s not right. But it is real.

I FEEL despondent every time I hear a politician or a person in authority urging people to “dob in” someone they see, especially someone they know, for doing something against the ever-changing COVID-19 rules and regulations.

It doesn’t seem to matter how trivial, or how intentional the infringement was, the expectation is, apparently, sirens should sound, tasers should be drawn and the evil violators of our COVID laws should be thrown into a paddy wagon and locked away from the rest of us law-abiding citizens.

I’m all for the public assisting with serious law breakers being caught. I believe police need all the help they can get. But dobbing in someone for not wearing a mask?

The other day I was in a newsagency on the Sunshine Coast. I was told to keep my mask on at all times because “the cops are on the prowl” because council workers were alerting the police to any group or individual wandering around sans masks. Can you believe that?

My despondency is magnified at the moment because I am constantly being reminded of what happened almost 80 years ago — the Holocaust.

I am doing some minor editing work on a book written by an Auschwitz concentration camp survivor. Several times a week I do a bit of work on it. I can only take it in small doses. It’s sickening, heart-breaking reading.

And while I am in no way comparing anything happening today with what occurred during those horrible war years, some things from the book make me think about the way some people are behaving during this pandemic and about human behaviour in general.

Controlling people by subjecting them to constant fear is recognised as a tried-and-true technique. There is no comparison between the fear experienced by millions during the war and what we are experiencing now, but the thinking is scarily similar.

The telling point I have noticed in this book is how people turned against each other during the war and the Holocaust. Neighbours turned on neighbours, workmates on workmates, friends on friends, and of course ethnic groups on ethnic groups.

In those horrific times the results were deadly. Millions died and millions more suffered terribly. In fact, most people today have absolutely no idea how those people suffered and died.

Please don’t get me wrong. I am not comparing those times with today’s events. Nothing could be further from the truth. I am simply seeing a pattern in human behaviour — a disturbing pattern that

Sadly, a lot of this has been at the instigation, urging, encouragement, direction (?) of some politicians, some senior bureaucrats, and other small-minded individuals and groups with a particular axe to grind.

If we wanted to, we could report people for doing the wrong thing every hour of every day. Whether knowingly or inadvertently, people are constantly breaking the law, breaching COVID restrictions, or simply doing something now deemed to be the wrong thing.

Normally we would simply laugh, grumble to ourselves, or have a whinge session with someone else. In more serious cases we might draw the miscreant’s attention to the breach. And in really serious times, police might be notified.

But now that we are under pressure, when routines are disrupted and our comfortable way of life is turned upside down at times, we seem to have no qualms about dobbing people in.

Some authorities are even encouraging it. We have seen and heard them enticing neighbours to turn on neighbours and friends on friends.

Why? Because believing you are constantly being watch and could get into trouble for minor breaches creates an atmosphere of fear and that’s the aim when someone wants to exercise maximum levels of control over the population.

One of the quotes from the holocaust book I am reading/editing says: “I never agreed with the treatment we have received from our guards but I have put it down to them being our enemies. However, I never understood why inmates would be aggressive or brutal to each other and display no solidarity at all. Without a fellow inmate’s humanity, suffering was even more painful. The Nazis … enjoyed watching the prisoners beat each other up.”

Again, I must stress I am not comparing the Holocaust with the pandemic. But human behaviour? Human reactions to stress?

Human nature?

Yes, I feel sad and despondent.

Bennett HAVE you ever felt stuck? Stuck in a routine that didn’t support you, a place you didn’t like, a situation that was uncomfortable, a job that didn’t suit you or a relationship that was going nowhere?

I know that I have at times and yet it generally took me a long time to do anything about it. In fact, often getting unstuck wasn’t prompted by me but by a set of circumstances.

I would say that a lot of the work that Nick and I do is essentially about helping people to get unstuck.

Organisations may lose their focus and progress halts, teams may be in conflict and reach deadlock and individuals may not be able to find their way through what’s holding them back.

What are some of the causes for becoming stuck in the first place and what keeps us there at times?

For me, it was often because I felt I didn’t have a choice despite being unhappy, therefore it was easier and felt more comfortable to stay where I was than experience the potential discomfort of making a different choice and the consequences of that.

What if I got it wrong and ended up worse off? It was often underpinned by fear, of the unknown and possible failure, and uncertainty which the brain handles as though it’s a threat.

I also acknowledge that part of it was a belief that was demonstrated around me growing up that you don’t give up, you keep quiet, don’t complain and get on with it; you’ve made your

choice now stick with it. Mixed in there I’m sure is also a large dose of resistance, lack of creative thinking about what might be possible or available and never really knowing what I wanted from life.

Looking back, each time I felt stuck I abdicated the decision to move on until someone else saw my potential, offered me an opportunity and was willing to take me on. Sometimes, it was the discomfort of the situation that forced the change upon me.

What can you do about it?

Feeling stuck isn’t always a bad thing and doesn’t necessarily require im-mediate action as there can be a lot to learn from being there, sitting with the discomfort and acknowledging it.

We can then reflect on what has created the situation and our part in it and take full responsibility for that because at some level it’s a result of our choice to do or not do something.

Beyond that it is about recognising what

needs to be changed; is it the situation or something in you? A belief? A mindset? Resistance to change? Fear? Something else? Then find a way to re-frame it or get a fresh perspective and work through that with someone else with the skills to help.

The final step is to ask yourself if you are truly ready and willing to move on from the situation. Recognise that there are always aspects that are within your control so identify what those are, the changes you can make and the first step you need to take.

RENTING: The Greens may make it harder

Greens bill may lead to rental problems RECKON it’s hard enough as it is to find a rental in the Mackay region?

It might be about to get a whole lot harder with private investors threatening to leave the market en masse, if new legislation is voted in, in State Parliament.

The Private Members Bill, sponsored

by Queensland Greens’ Member for South Brisbane Amy MacMahon is expected to be soondebated in State Parliament and critics have said its passing could tighten the rental market further, rather than easing the crisis.

At the heart of the issue is a shortage of rental accommodation.

Blacks Real Estate Mackay reported that there was less than one percent of property vacancies on the market – making it tight and competitive for to rental applicants.

Real estate experts state the trend is one that’s repeated throughout the industry, Queensland wide.

The Queensland Greens will introduce a Private Members Bill to Parliament changing the legislation governing tenant’s rights in residential tenancies.

The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) has described these proposed reforms as ‘ludicrous’, stating the bill was a recycled policy position from years ago disguised as a necessary response to the current tight vacancy conditions.

Some of the proposed rental reforms included in the Bill include: • Capping rent increases to once every 24 months and by no more than CPI annually; • Scrapping “no grounds evictions” thereby preventing owners from being entitled to end a fixed term tenancy at the end of its agreed term; • Restricting owners’ rights to end tenancies, effectively allowing lessors to give a notice to leave only on the grounds of required occupation by the property owner (or owner’s close family) or on account of major renovations to be made to the property. The Bill also excludes the right for owners to issue notices to leave where they intend to sell the property; • Banning rental bidding; and, • Allowing tenants to make property alterations without permission from the owner.

Of greatest concern in the legislation is the removal of the owner’s right not to renew an expiring tenancy at the end of the agreed term. This could allow the tenant to remain in tenancy indefinitely and for as long as they wish, unless the owner can establish one of two grounds for the tenant to move out. Effectively, this would mean an owner could only issue a notice to leave if they or a family member intended to occupy the property

or if major renovations were to be made to the property.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella, said the impact this proposed legislation would have on the investment housing market.

“This reform has been cleverly disguised by the Greens as the abolishment of ‘without grounds’ terminations or evictions,” ‘ Ms. Mercorella said.

“What they’re describing is inaccurate and misleading because under Queensland law, lessors cannot evict tenants for no reason during a fixed-term tenancy agreement.

“By tying the hands of lessors behind their backs, what the Greens are really seeking is for tenants to have the right to stay in a property until it suits them, to make modifications as they please and keep pets in the property without seeking consent.

“Meanwhile, lessors won’t be able to even request tenants pay market rent.

“As a result, no lessor will choose to invest in Queensland property under these proposed laws. Investors have a range of options open to them, including shares and other asset classes. If their rights to manage an investment property are removed they’ll simply choose to invest elsewhere.

“What we need is a regulatory frame-

work that provides security for both tenants and lessors. A balance must be found but it won’t be if the Greens have their way.”

The Bill is due to be introduced into Parliament by its sponsor Ms MacMahon, who believes it is a function of government to invest more in public housing.

“We’re pushing for the Queensland Labor Government to invest in building 25,000 new public homes a year,” Dr MacMahon said.

“Not only would this go a long way towards solving the housing crisis, but it would create tens of thousands of steady construction jobs.

“Queensland is, unfortunately, still a long way off from having an adequate supply of public homes. Most low-income renters currently rely on the private market for housing, and will do so for years to come, so it’s crucial that we act now to strengthen our rental laws to make renting more affordable and fairer,” Ms MacMahon said.

“Access to affordable, safe housing is a basic right.”

Blacks Real Estate’s Greg Lewis said Mackay was in dire need of additional rental housing.

Mr Lewis said Mackay needed more building, and new homes for investors.

“The less red tape for new homes, so

land developers can get land on the market quickly and builders can build the houses, the better,” Mr Lewis said.

“We find that the new house market is a good market for rental investment.

“Mum-and-dad investors usually find residential investment quite good because it’s less risk than commercial investment.

“We feel that there needs to be more incentive for more investors to buy investment properties.”

Mr Lewis believed it is important to protect not only the tenants but also the owners who invest in providing rental accommodation.

“We’ve known that they were proposing something similar to this before. But it just doesn’t make good sense.

“It’s going to discourage people from buying and entering the rental market as a landlord and that will magnify the problem of supply. And we find that government is not filling the void with government rentals.” said Mr Lewis.

“The government is quite happy for the private sector to do rentals and the private sector does quite well at it.

“We believe that private rental investors would leave the market if that Bill was in place.”

Willis Work Life Journeys ONE of the many pieces of advice I have given people is that you need to be committed to going outside of your comfort zone in order to grow as a person and in business.

Let me tell you that I am way outside of my comfort zone right now. Have I ever written a column for a local newspaper? That’s a NO from me but in the Aussie spirit of giving it a go…here I am!

As a small business owner for the last year and a half, putting myself outside of my comfort zone has been a weekly experience, and touch wood, I haven’t failed in conquering the many challenges thrown

at me so far.

I think we have a natural default to rise to the challenge despite the fact that internally we shake with fear at what we need to deliver. To date, I have not harmed or injured others in my endeavours, nor have I been the laughing stock of the business community and let’s hope that never changes. On the flip side, I have discovered that I am pretty damn good at delivering projects that I would never have thought of doing.

Who knew I would be capable of writing a two-three month online short course in recruitment, onboarding, and employee engagement?

Not me until I did it. Well done me, I say!

So, let me begin this journey by telling you a little about myself. I am all things people! My passion is making a positive difference in people’s lives, and this is the only reason I survived unscathed with my

positivity intact during the last 20 years working in the recruitment industry.

Yep – people are an interesting product to sell and sometimes they can just do dumb things (shout out to the candidate who rang me at 1.30am with the nightclub in the background to let me know they would be late for work the next day), however in my experience most people are quite remarkable in their own right.

What has always amazed me is that so many companies sprout how important their people are to their business success but just don’t show that appreciation in the workplace.

Who knew that a simple thank you was so difficult to say? You know who you are offending companies! Employee engagement is not rocket science, its about all things human. Most people just like to have a challenging and meaningful role and feel appreciated for their commitment to the organisation.

I think this is the minimum that an employee should expect. I say again – it’s not rocket science!

So why do so many businesses get it wrong? Many times, I have met with leaders of organisations to discuss their culture, values, and recruitment needs.

When I ask the organisations what their employee turnover is and they respond with “oh its quite high but that’s because we live in a skill short region and they get head hunted”, I already know that most of the time, the organisation has some issues with their own culture and are not brave enough to look in the mirror and work on fixing it.

Stop blaming the skill shortage every time and employee leaves as most HR research indicates that some of the top reasons employees leave businesses is because they feel unappreciated, have lost respect for those they report to, have not been given the support to set them up for

success and are disengaged with the vision of the business (or don’t know what that vision is).

Pay as much attention to the culture of your company as you do to delivering solutions to your customers and the landscape may look very different.

This weekly column will focus on all areas of HR – recruitment, onboarding, engagement, organisational values, mission, and vision – this list goes on and on.

Sammy, unsung local literary star

SAMANTHA Munt is one of the unsung literary stars of our region and this week she is winding down after a hugely successful premiere season of Heading North.

The stage production, which she wrote and brought to life in collaboration with Joel Bow, tributes the music of Graeme Connors and played to sell-out audiences at the weekend.

A local girl, this pocket rocket is a talented author and playwright but she is also a devoted mum and family girl – and through the thick of all the rehearsals, preparations, writing marathons, and casually making it onto Amazon’s best seller list just last week, she still makes time to watch her kids perform, be there for her husband and remember her priorities.

By the numbers, she is downright impressive: 38 years old and 29 novels. And although she cites hers as being a career akin to riding a roller-coaster, she makes it look easy, with a smile, an incredible warmth and a presence which commands respect.

So, with Mackay Local News journalist Jacob Cumner asking the questions, please make welcome, Sammy Munt!

JC: How long have you been writing?

SM: Unofficially since I was about seven - I still have old notebooks that I filled with stories, and I wrote the senior musical for North Mackay High in 1999. But I began taking my writing seriously around 2010, and I started publishing in 2013.

JC: Did you go to university for your writing experiences?

SAMMY MUNT: A literary champion SM: No, I didn’t. Economically, university was never on the cards for me and back then in the 90s kids weren’t pushed to excel in the way they are now, unless they were already excelling, so I only took my performing arts classes and English seriously.

I did do a correspondence writing course after high school though that took about two years, and I’ve taken a lot of creative writing workshops over the years.

I was even lucky enough to do one with John Marsden in the ninth grade, and then Jute Theatre back in 2018-19.

JC: What got you in to writing?

SM: Ghost stories actually-

I was obsessed with them and would often gather other kids together at the back of the Bucasia Primary School oval near this storm drain so I could regale them with my latest find.

Pursuing Goosebumps books led to me discovering Stephen King and Richard Laymon, which I started reading in the fourth grade, but I ended up developing an interest in multiple genres and you can see that in my writing- a bit of adventure, a bit of comedy, a bit of fantasy… if I have any craft by this point, it’s the ability to mash-up genres and make something new.

JC: Have you won any awards?

SM: I won the David Bow

award through Rotary Club for Outstanding Community service, for how I’ve developed my writing through community theatre, and I made the Amazon Best-Seller list a few times last month, but aside from that I’ve never actually entered anything that leads to those kinds of awards.

I’d love that kind of recognition one day and I suppose anyone would, but for me it’s more of a matter of getting the words out before my brain blows up than anything else.

JC: Do you draw any of your stories from life experiences?

SM: Absolutely. My mermaid series came to mind due to a love of surfing and the fact that I grew

Sweet progress for our crushing season WORLD sugar prices took another dip but managed to rally above $500 a tonne this week.

With the crushing well underway throughout the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday regions, though, all eyes were on numbers of a different kind.

CCS across the region remains steady at levels of between 11 and 13 points, with throughput settling and tonnage crushed on the rise.

Mill operators across the Mackay Sugar and Willmar networks praised motorists and the general public for their

vigilance and care while making their way around the region during the school holidays.

“We are always reminding people to use their ‘train brain’ and be vigilant around level crossings – even when they are marked,” Proserpine Mill Cane Supply Manager Tony Marino said.

“We are thankful to everyone in the community for ensuring an incident free school holiday period as far as crossings are concerned.”

Proserpine Mill was just below budget, with 68,714 tonnes of sugarcane crushed.

“The factory has now settled in and daily throughputs have been normal since Thursday,” Mr Marino said.

“Average weekly CCS was 13.73 – which is an increase of 0.88 of a unit on the previous week.

“The highest CCS sample was 15.71 from a rake of plant Q208 in the Glen Isla Productivity District.”

Plane Creek Mill crushed just under 53,000 tonnes of cane for the week, bringing the season total to nearly 190,000 tonnes.

Jim Kirchner said a planned maintenance stop was extended for several hours following the failure of an ID fan on No.2 boiler during factory re-start operations.

He said the factory operated at a reduced crushing rate from Thursday while maintenance crews repaired and commissioned the ID fan. Full crush rates resumed on Saturday when No.2 boiler was brought back online.

“CCS levels showed a marginal increase over the previous week of 0.19 of a unit, taking the season-todate CCS to 12.51 units,” Mr Kirchner said.

“However, there was a welcome improvement in average bin weight. The highest CCS was 15.5 from a rake of Q183, 6th ratoon from the Dawlish productivity district.”

Mackay Sugar crushed a total of 205,072 tonnes in the past week with an average CCS of 12.97.

Mackay Sugar Cane Supply Manager Jason Walton said Farleigh crushed 74,433tonnes with CCS at 12.96, Marian crushed 67,715tonnes at 12.58 and Racecourse crushed 62,932tonnes with CCS at 13.40.

Excitement mounts for Farmer’s Lunch

WE’RE so excited to be working on our upcoming Farmers Lunch at the G&S Food and Wine event, especially after the recent hiatus due to COVID. Behind the scenes our organising team has been in close contact with our farmers as we check in to see how their winter harvest is progressing. From there, our gathered intel is passed directly to the event chefs, giving them the opportunity to design an outstanding local season menu.

With a strong focus on partnerships, the Farmers Lunch will see Nik Flack (pictured above right) from The Flackyard collaborating with the new executive chef at Moss on Wood, Brett Cafun (pictured above left), to create a truly memorable fine dining experience.

Fiona Okpalgu, General Manager at Moss on Wood, sees the event as a great fit for the business. “Working with local producers is something we are proud of” she told me. “With the help of our new executive chef, Brett, we will be building close relationships with local suppliers over the next couple of months.”

Brett is also looking forward to teaming up with Nik. “It is my honour to be cooking alongside Nick Flack to showcase this great region’s produce at the Farmer’s Lunch for the G&S Food and Wine festival” I’m sure Mackay locals are very familiar with Nik, who worked with some of Australia’s most respected chefs before returning to the region with his family a few years ago.

Kirra Tully is the Marketing and Events Coordinator at GWFN. Believing that food connects people, her aim is to always deliver events that increase strong connections to community, friends and

family.

“Food is a celebration of life and brings people together from all walks of life” she told me recently. “After the Farmers Lunch, is the Business Breakfast Hub. Thanks to Mackay Regional Council, this event will provide our corporate partners with an opportunity to participate in networking event and explore the wide range of fabulous local produce from our region”. It has been extremely important to us that we deliver the Farmers Lunch as another waste free event. From the kitchen menu preparation through to the

actual dining experience, any waste will be sent directly to Auscan for their hungry worms, and, in time, will be ultimately converted to usable compost.

So there you have it. I don’t want to give too much away but, after chatting to our farmers and the Chefs, I can promise you that the Farmers lunch will be an unforgettable four course extravaganza Tickets were selling fast at time of writing so if you missed out this time around don’t worry, there are more events on the drawing board. YELLOW CANOPY SYNDROME: Experts are still looking for ways to eradicate this blight on our sugar industry

INDUSTRY scientists and growers have worked on the mystery of Yellow Canopy Syndrome (YCS) since it first appeared in 2012 but despite all the effort, major questions remain and more work is needed.

YCS has spread to most of Queensland’s sugarcane districts and sometimes the symptoms are so severe, it has a big impact on a growers’ cane yield and therefore income.

Recently, a major project costing around $10 million dollars was wrapped up by Sugar Research Australia.

With the cooperation of growers across many re-

gions, more than 30 scientists and support staff approached the problem from a variety of angles and we thank them for their efforts.

Their final report, available on the SRA website and summarised in the July Australian Canegrower magazine, reports that no disease, vector, genetic or nutrient link was found to cause what has been described as induced leaf aging.

We do know that YCS interrupts the movement of sucrose from the leaves to the stalk – but the research has not been able to pinpoint why it happens or how to stop it.

The key, though, is plant stress. Basically, YCS will kick a crop when it is already down, and it will usually happen during the peak growing period between December and March.

Once affected, the yellow leaves don’t recover. In the worst cases the stalks become rubbery.

That tallies with what growers have seen. YCS will rear its head when there’s been rain after an ex-

tended dry spell. On my farm I have seen too that there is no rhyme or reason as to why one block or area is heavily impacted and another one nearby, just across a headland, is not.

From the SRA research project, the best advice to combatting YCS at the moment is to reduce stress on the sugarcane plants.

As growers, we are always trying to reduce stress on our crop because when it is healthy, it grows.

So, I understand growers may feel disappointed by the outcome of the research project.

We all like answers and a quick fix. This time, unfortunately, they are not available.

I’m not losing heart. Science constantly develops, new people come up with new ideas and new options can be tried.

It took researchers more than 80 years to identify the cause of chlorotic streak disease, which first appeared in 1929 and is one of the most common diseases in the Australian sugarcane industry.

Only in recent times was the DNA of a water-borne organism that spreads it identified.

For this reason, research into YCS must continue beyond the end of this project.

SRA says it will continue to invest in YCS and this is critical.

We need a form of active, ongoing monitoring and a plan be ready to ramp up research again should anything change.

As with chlorotic streak, just because the cause can’t be found now, doesn’t mean that it won’t be discoverable in the future or that the current level of YCS across the industry won’t change.

So, it is important that growers stay vigilant and on the lookout for YCS symptoms.

In the meantime we are left with our questions: n What causes Yellow Canopy Syndrome? n How do we stop it?

And the hope that the future holds the key.

Sweetest cargo on the way AUSTRALIA’S largest sugar marketer Queensland Sugar Limited (QSL) has dispatched its first shipment of sugar from the current harvest.

The cargo of 42,000 tonnes of raw sugar from the Burdekin region was shipped on the Pacific Integrity out of Townsville this month, bound for a refinery customer in South Korea.

QSL General Manager Marketing Mark Hampson said South Korea was one of Australia’s largest raw sugar markets and had been one of QSL’s key customers for nearly 50 years.

“While we’ve had other shipments this year, those previous cargos delivered sugar produced last season,” Mr Hampson said.

“Queensland’s sugar is in high demand, so this first 2021-Season shipment marks the start of very a busy shipping program which will stretch through until mid-next year, with exports already planned for refining customers in South Korea, Indonesia, Japan and the USA.”

Delicious raw fish, PNG style

By DAVID LORNIE MACKAY has a large population of Pacific Islanders and, back in the islands, fish is a staple food.

In the coastal areas of Papua New Guinea, a popular way to cook fish is to “burn” it. This simply means to throw the fresh, whole fish – unbled, with scales and guts intact – onto an open fire and pull it out when the skin is black and charred.

This may sound somewhat crude to delicate Western ears but it is a simple and effective cooking method.

The flesh comes out tender,

juicy and delicious. It’s eaten piping hot with the fingers, no condiments or Michelin stars needed.

In PNG, most meals are accompanied by root vegetables such as sweet potatoes, yams or taro, though in recent years rice is taking over in popularity.

Some Papua New Guineans say that, if there is no rice in a meal, they cannot feel full.

Another way to enjoy fish in PNG is to make Kokoda Fish, though this is found mainly in hotels and restaurants. (In my 20 or so years living in PNG, I never encountered this way of eating fish in any village I visited.) It is apparently borrowed

from a Fiji recipe. Kokoda Fish is a raw dish with the fish “cooked” in lemon or lime juice.

Coconuts are abundant in PNG and no excuse is needed to add freshly prepared coconut cream to a dish.

And this addition is what makes Kokoda Fish different from the Fiji recipe.

Kokoda Fish, like most PNG recipes, is simple to prepare.

Any type of white-meat ocean fish can be used, with the abundant red emperor being a favourite in PNG. The ingredients and process are simple. Cut up half a kilo of your favoured fish fillets into

The temperature first light Sunday morning last week near the Sarina Showgrounds was reported to me as below 0°C. We recieved several reports of ice on cars and tents with some very brave ladies and gentlemen braving the cold with their model gliders and planes as the Sarina Aero Modellers held annual competition.

bite-sized chunks, put them in a bowl and pour around half a cup of either lime or lemon juice over them. Leave to marinate in the fridge for around six hours so the juice turns the flesh white.

When the flesh is ready, drain the juice and keep it handy.

Then add a finely chopped onion, a couple of roughly chopped and deseeded tomatoes, and some diced capsicum. Add chilli and coriander to taste.

Throw in a cup of freshly squeezed coconut milk – tinned coconut milk is fine. Then add about half a cup of the reserved citrus liquid. Mix well, add salt and pepper to taste.

G’day to the Mackay Community!

We are well and truly into July with the school holidays finishing up last week. I hope some young anglers got out and about in the community to wet a line and are now ready to get back into their school term. We have had some good weather inshore and offshore with some Snapper, Grey Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, Whiting and Flathead on the bite for those getting out there and giving it a crack!

Last week’s column I introduced the beginner angler to the basic lure fishing necessaries. This week I would like to bring some more local fishing spots to light so that anyone can get out and practice their casting skills.

When casting our bait or lure hold the rod at about waist level, so that the reel is below the rod, and the stem of your reel feels natural between your fingers.

The bait or lure should be hanging 10-18 inches (25-45cms) below the end of the rod. Hook the line with your forefinger, and open the bail, continuing to hold your line. Pull the rod back so that the tip sweeps over your dominant shoulder, then bring it forward swiftly pointing the rod tip at your target. As the rod comes forward of your shoulder release the line with your finger so the weight pulls the line off the reel. Close the bail with your hand and your ready to reel using a retreive technique.

With all this in mind, one place in Mackay that some might not be aware of practicing your technique, with the almost guarantee of a fish, is the Gooseponds in North Mackay. You can gain access to the water via Malcolmson Street, Glenpark Street and Evans Avenue.

The Gooseponds are no deeper then 600mm which makes it very family friendly. It is stocked with juvenile Barramundi around the 3-5kg size, Tarpon reaching 5-6kg size, snake head gudgeon (close relative to the sleepy cod) and the Tilapia are known to be caught in these waters.

The Tilapia is a pest so when they are caught refer to the QLD fisheries website when disposing of these non-native species.

Tarpon and Barra are absolute suckers for soft plastics and these lures are the most practical to use in these high weeded areas. The best time to fish the Gooseponds are anytime, so pack up your lures and get casting!

Another spot for these species is at The Lagoons at the Southern Entrance to the Mackay city. Access to this spot is via Lagoon Street with parking areas near the water treatment works. You can catch Tarpon and Barramundi here with soft plastics and grubs being the most effective. The best time of day to fish these locations are late afternoon and into the night as both

I am told that mosquitoes and sand flies are quite bad so ensure you take something to warn off the nasties and more importantly you can then enjoy your fishing session.

If the angler is looking for something more experienced and adventurous, the saltwater creeks are also a good location to practice casting and catching fish.

North of Mackay you have the choice of Reliance Creek, Constant Creek, Murray Creek as well as Seaforth hosting the net free zone.

Pack up the car and the kids and make a day trip or take the camping gear and make it a fishing trip you’ll never forget. South of Mackay also has the options of Baker’s Creek, Alligator Creek, Sandy Creek, Rocky Dam Creek and the Sarina Inlet Area, just to name your options. So we really are spoilt for choice here in the beautiful Mackay Region!

An exciting annual event hosted by the Mackays Game Fishing Club is their Spanish Mackerel Fishing Shootout starting on Saturday and ending on Sunday.

It is open to the general public and will be kicking off near the Mulheron Park Boat Ramp in the Mackay Harbour via East Point Drive.

The event is hoping for 100+ anglers for this year’s annual competition and is giving away a whopping $5000 in cash and prizes. The biggest catch for this tournament was in 2018 with the biggest ‘Spannie’ being caught weighing in at 32.7kgs! What a whopper! I look forward to seeing the pictures and fishing reports on this event and will give you and update on my next week’s column!

Rare Lotus turns heads at traffic lights THIS Lotus 340r is just one of seven in Australia.

A total of 340 were made in the year 2000. Owner Michael Zammit managed to track it down and purchase it last February.

“Since owning the car I’ve had my fair share of issues,” he said.

“With a rear toe link failure on my very first drive on Qld soil (my concrete driveway), replacing the complete fuel system, clutch, clutch slave cylinder, tyers, cooling system bushes and ball joints.

“Once I was happy with it and it was finally reliable I added my touches to it with getting carbon seats trimmed by Mackay Auto &

“I run a little business supplying hose and fittings and performance accessories called Wogrocket Industries,” he said.

“Like everything I’ve owned, it couldn’t stay standard for too long so with that I went to do a motor swap with its bigger brother the A15, but on the way to a friend’s place a guy ran me off the road.

So off to the panelbeaters it went but came out looking a little too good for what I had planned for it.

So the real modifications began,

“After running larger wheels that didn’t really suit the era of the car I managed to get a set of work equip E03 wheels to really finish the look I was after. The interior is also customised where I’ve made new door cards, complete dash bride seats and a few other little touches.”

If you like the look and sound of this car, Michael is actually thinking of selling it.

“So if anyone is interested I’m sure you’ll track me down and get in contact with me,” he said.

Top Eight IN AIRLIE Darts, with eight rounds remaining there are still players jostling for a position in the top eight. Andy Peel had a tough task first up to try and get back into the top four by taking on top of the table Jamie Woods.

Jamie again proving how strong he is in this years comp by beating the 2019 champ 6/2. Another top-four clash took place between Joe Wilson and Jamie Maher. Jamie had won the return fixture in a close encounter that day 6/5, but Joe returned fire here by winning this one 6/4. That win also returned Joe back into third place with matches in hand.

Bowls final

THE final of the Mens Championship Pairs at Proserpine Bowls was played on Sunday morning. This turned out to be a one-sided affair with Nathan Dodds and Scott Hamilton dominating Jim Quod and Dale Haack winning 30 to 5. The semi finals of the Men’s Singles were played Sunday afternoon.

Wayne Handley defeated Barry Saroglia 25 to 13 and Marcus Craig defeated Shane Kinnear 25 to 7. Wayne will now play Marcus in the Final in a couple of weeks. The Mens Pennants also wrapped up on Saturday.

Division One travelled to Mackay to play Mackay Bowling Club. Here the boys were outplayed being a dead rubber and all, losing all three rinks to lose 71 to 37 overall.

Golf trophy SEVENTY-eight played for the Master Butchers Whitsunday stableford trophy on Saturday at Proserpine Golf. The men’s winner was Levi Holmes with a great 40 points, from Runner up Brian Allen and Phil Batty, on 38. The Ladies winner was Heather Luvis on a count back from Penny Wardroper, both ladies having 33 points. In third place was Tiina Randmae with 32. he men’s place getters were Jon Miller, Rod Wecker and Dan O’Connell, 37, followed by Chris Forrest, Kelvin Stephens and Jim Grace on 36. The ladiesplace getters were Jacqui Wall, Pauline Redpath, 32 points, and Jill Farinelli, 31.

Sarina ladies bowlers have a go

SARINA lady bowlers have just missed out on winning the district-wide Johnston Shield.

After great competition over two days at Sarina Bowls Club it came down to the final between Sarina and City Club, with City coming out the winners.

The Johnston Shield is a women’s only competition, with seven from every club in the Mackay district playing with singles, pairs and a fours team.

To wrap up a busy week, about 40 locals attend a breakfast and barefoot bowls morning. There was much laughter on the greens as all who attended really enjoyed themselves.

Boss of the mountain THIS Sunday the Mackay Road Runners and the Mackay Cycle Club host the annual King and Queen of the Mountain.

The Mackay Road Runners Signature and Club Championship M-Test Open Eungella King and Queen of the Mountain 6.4km foot race and the Mackay Cycle Club 6.4km hill climb will commence 8am sharp from Netherdale, with the Laura Pettifer Inspirational/ Podiatry Mackay Junior 3.2km foot race to commence half way up the hill.

All running entrants must be registered in by 7.45am at the latest so that volunteers can lock in the timing system prior to the start.

The local Finch Hatton Police are aware of the event, however, the road may not be closed depending on their official duties which will take precedence.

For the health and safety of all road users, all participants must be very aware of traffic conditions and keeping to the left at all times.

Mackay Road Runners wish to remind all local athletes whether a member or not, that

the Club conducts a free social track training session at 5.30pm every Wednesday from the Aquatic and Recreational Centre at Ooralea.

The Mackay Road Runners’ event is hosted

by Club Captain, Jim Ford who has enormous knowledge and experience in track training for athletes of varying sports including short, middle and long distance running, crossfit cardio, strength and conditioning training for success in a multitude of sports. The only cost is entry to the facility which is $3 payable at the swimming pool entrance.

Stadium abuzz with basketball MACKAY’S multipurpose stadium was buzzing with basketballers tipping off for their U14 state championships and grand finals at the weekend.

The turnout over the last week was a boon for the Mackay region with players coming from all over Queensland, while still obeying the COVID19 rules and wearing masks while not on the court.

Each team had their own individual tent outside for upcoming matches.

Basketball Queensland chief executive Graham Burns said teams from throughout the state converged in Mackay to play out the championships.

“With around 40 or more teams there were three division. The division one competition was between Cairns and Mackay, so these teams

have done extremely well.” Mr Burns said. “This event is huge for the girls attending the championships, and the winners of these three divisions will be heading to the national U14s club championships, which will be held in Victoria in September - if everything goes well (with COVID-19 restrictions).

The Division One Gold Medal Game between the Cairns Dolphins and the Mackay Meteorettes Cairns managing to come away with the win.

The Division Two Gold Medal Game saw the Burdekin Wildcats face Southern District’s Titans, with the Burdekin coming out on top.

And the Division Three Gold Medal Game played out between Emerald Chargers and Townsville Lightning with Townsville taking victory.

‘Gift from Heaven’ QUEENSLAND table tennis has lost one of its most dedicated officials with the death of Townsville’s Jim Miller.

Jim, 83, died in Townsville on Wednesday after a long illness.

Jim and his wife Rhonda were the gift from heaven for club officials as they travelled to hundreds of tournaments throughout Queensland and interstate for many years as umpires and officials, usually with little or no recompense.

The couple seldom missed attending Mackay Open and other tournaments, voluntarily travelling Queensland’s highways to ensure well-run events.

Despite Jim’s illness, he and Rhonda were at the Queensland Junior championships at Mackay in 2019, which attracted one of the biggest fields ever.

Rhonda was deputy referee for the tournament, and despite being confined to a wheelchair, Jim helped at the control desk. Rhonda returned for the Mackay Open this year, but Jim was unable to attend.

Jim started playing in Townsville at the age of 10 in 1948 while Rhonda took up the game in 1959 at 13.

“I suppose our first date was table tennis,” Rhonda said at the time.

“We were always at the table tennis together, and we eventually got married in 1970.”

They were keen competitors at tournaments across Queensland, and when no longer playing they continued their involvement through officiating as umpires, referees and tournament controllers, driving thousands of kilometres each year to voluntarily help
