Free art, good for soul THERE are few things more uplifting than regular free visits to the Mackay Regional Council’s Artspace art gallery.

Gallery Director Tracey Heathwood presents 16 different exhibitions to the greater Mackay com-munity every year.

“Sometimes we have several exhibitions on at once in our four exhibition spaces,” Tracey smiled, with well-deserved pride and satisfaction.

“Each exhibition runs for eight to 12 weeks, plus Artspace gallery staff also develop our own exhibi-tions from our own art collection.

FRONT-PAGE stories by the Mackay Local News have led to a victory for local farmer David Lukas against mining giant ADANI. Finally, roadwork has begun to prevent ADANI/Bravus road trains driving past David and his wife Katie’s Lignum homestead.

This newspaper, over several publications, highlighted that double and triple road trains have been driven past their front and back door of every 30 seconds for the past six months.

But now it is finally happening and a fenced-off access road to the ADANI Bravus Carmichael coal mine has commenced.

Bravus Mining and Resources CEO David Boshoff has announced that “Bravus has agreed to fund some fencing and a temporary road away from Mr David Luke’s property.

“Isaac Regional Council will construct this temporary bypass road,” Mr Boshoff said.

“The permanent road upgrade, will be even further away from Mr Luke’s property and built as part of the overarching mine access

“We have been collaboratively working with Isaac Regional

Council to resolve the final design features for specific sections of the Mine Access Road, and this process is nearing completion.

“Work to upgrade the Mine Access Road is now well underway.

“The first 8km of bitumen was laid in May along the 90km council-owned road.

“In total, we will spend more than $100 million to upgrade the council-owned road.

“This work will create more than 100 jobs in the region over the next two years and deliver an improved road network for all road users in the region.”

A pleased and frustrated Lignum Station owner, David (Blue) Luke said he was relieved that it’s finally going to happen after ADANI’s failure to fence-off and build an access road was exposed in The Mackay Local News.

“I found another cow half dead in the paddock last week that had been hit by an ADANI truck and I had to put the cow out of pain and shoot it,” Mr Luke said.

“If the boundary fence was put in in the first place, then none of this would be an issue - and my wife and I signed an agreement in 2016 for this fence to be done within 21 days.”

Disputer over new development MACKAY Regional Council has been accused of killing-off its own $500 million, 6000 job, riverfront CBD redevelopment.

Following years of negotiations, a closed tender was sent last month to the Sentinel Property Group and to Mackay property developers Sean Kelly and Craig Percival’s ReNew Mackay Group.

However, half of the Council’s CBD redevelopment along the Pioneer River may now be in tatters, after the Sentinel Group has angrily withdrawn its participation.

A cross Executive Chairman and Chief Investment Officer, Warren Ebert told The Mackay Local News that “Sentinel won’t participate any further.

“The Mackay Council accepted our proposal and then months later changed its agreement with us, even though it had accepted our proposal,” Mr Ebert said.

This newspaper understands that half of the Council’s CBD redevelopment plans collapsed after the Council allegedly went back on promises with Sentinel to be an anchor tenant for over 200 Council employees and rent a large amount of new A-Grade office prime space in the riverside office redevelopment.

Sentinel appears to have put this rental

agreement in its tender submission, believing it had an agreement.

Mr Egbert added that “Sentinel has plenty to do with $1.25 billion in property developments projects across Queensland and we won’t participate any further.”

However in an unofficial test of strength in the battle of words, the Mackay Regional Council is understood to be hotly disputing and contradicting Sentinel and Mr Ebert’s allegations.

It is understood that the Mackay Regional Council claims that Sentinel has not withdrawn its redevelopment proposal and is simply seeking to force the Council to provide significant development concessions.

The Mackay Local News has also been advised that Council has never had a formal or written agreement with Sentinel for it to be an anchor tenant and move hundreds of Council office staff into Sentinel’s planned glamorous riverside office redevelopment in the CBD. Sentinel’s withdrawal cancels redevelopment of its two inner city sites on the Gregory Street carpark and at 14 and 18 Woods Street, for an eight-story luxury hotel, plus an A-grade and upmarket, four-story 1,200 square metre office and retail building (see artist’s impression above) on the river.

Solid crush ahead

CHILLY weather and some promising signs around world prices have the Mackay region’s more than 900 sugar cane growers banking on a solid 2021 Crush.

Mackay Sugar’s Racecourse Mill is expected to fire up today, while Marian Mill will start next week.

Farleigh Mill, also owned

by Mackay Sugar, started crushing last week.

Wilmar’s Plane Creek Mill is expected to start June 15 and Proserpine Mill on June 29.

The company’s Invicta Mill in the Burdekin started Tuesday.

Mackay Sugar, owned by Nordzucker (70 percent) and Mackay Growers (30 percent), is starting the crush off the back of what Chief Operating Officer Joachim Rueger describes as a productive maintenance period.

“We have invested more than $70million into works and maintenance across the entire Mackay Sugar network this year,” Mr Rueger said.

“That’s everything from the locos and track, to bins, and the factories.”

Mr Rueger said the works would optimise processes, and help set the mills up for the future.

Despite this, Farleigh

Mill’s start-up lent an early test of Farleigh Mill engineers.

The mill started a day earlier than scheduled after successful steam trials but came to a halt under load.

“We have an experienced and engaged team there and they responded very well,” he said.

Mackay Sugar Cane Supply Manager Jason Walton said CCS levels were showing early promise with levels of about 11.4 reported upon commencement.

“This is a good whole unit above what we were expecting for this stage of the Crush, so that is a promising sign,” Mr Walton said.

He said Mackay Sugar’s Crop estimate stood at about 5.3Mtonnes, up on last year’s crop of 5.155Mtonnes.

Willmar spokesperson Leanne Oliveri said the company had a group wide crop estimate of 15.29Mtonnes, up from 2020’s 14.93Mtonnes – across its four Burdekin and two Mackay region mills.

Plane Creek’s estimate stood at 1.3Mtonnes, up from 1.23Mtonnes in 2020; and Proserpine’s estimate was 1.64Mtonnes, up from 1.54M in 2020.

Road crash At 3.40pm Tuesday, a three-vehicle crash occurred at the Peak Downs Highway near Racecourse. A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said paramedics arrived on scene and took a man to the Mackay Base Hospital for head injuries in a stable condition.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said a call was received at 3.45pm, where crews arrived on scene at 4pm. The crash was past the sugar mill near the Mackay Ring Road. Fire crews cleared the scene and soon left at 4.12pm.

Teenager dies

ON TRACK: Mackay Sugar COO Joachim Rueger is satisfied with early signs for the 2021 season

A TEENAGE boy has died following a single vehicle crash involving an alleged stolen vehicle at Bowen. Initial investigations indicate around 6.45am yesterday, a vehicle rolled while traveling near the intersection of King Street and Queens Road.

Members of the public provided assistance and first aid to the passenger, a 14-year-old Sarina boy, prior to the arrival of emergency services. The boy was transported to hospital for treatment of serious, non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the vehicle, a 13-year-old Bowen boy, died at the scene. Police will allege the vehicle was stolen from an address near Sarina.

Finding joy amongst pain

MACKAY table tennis player Steven Morgan is still finding joy in his favourite sport despite the trauma of an aggressive brain tumour.

Steven underwent surgery on November 26 last year in Townsville after it was discovered he was suffering from glioblastoma, an aggressive cancer of the brain.

“It’s level 4, which is 12 months to live,” he said.

“It’s taken me some time to come to grips with the changes in my life, it’s a huge challenge.”

The operation and subsequent chemotherapy and radiation caused him to lose 12 kg weight, and he admits the illness has shown him huge changes in what is important in life, and where to find joy.

“In January my wife Kerry said ‘Why don’t you go down to table tennis?’

“She said maybe you can go and hit a few balls.”

Anyone who knows Steven will tell you that when he steps into a table tennis centre he does more than hit a few balls. He is an avid trainer and player, and was instrumental in bringing Brisbane coach Bruno Levis to Mackay for regular coaching sessions.

Steven played in the Mackay Table Tennis A grade teams fixtures last season, finishing in the top three of matches won and lost, and is again one of the top players in a new season of competition.

He played in the recent Townsville and Mackay Open championships, winning a doubles title with Mackay’s Graham Drury in the northern tournament.

Notwithstanding the brain tu-

mour he is training as his body allows including early mornings with training mates and sessions with high quality coaches.

“Table tennis is a combination of physical activity and it’s a very mental sport as well,” Steven said.

“For me it’s working well: I’m enjoying it and I’m still playing well. I don’t know what the journey ahead is like.

“I was thinking of taking a break but I don’t want to become disconnected so I think I’ll keep doing it.”

Steven’s family is made of tough stuff, as his mother Coral is back playing at the age of 80 despite a serious car accident in January 2020 which left her with multiple fractures, and his sister Delma Knight also plays in both the Tuesday morning and night fixtures.

42nd to hold reunion MACKAY’S 42nd Infantry Battalion Association is holding its reunion on July 31 at the Metropolitan Hotel.

Association President Garry Edwards said the evening will start at 6:30pm with the playing of The Last Post by bugler Glen Nicholi.

“Members of the 42nd Battalion, Mackay’s 9th Field Ambulance, plus current and past Members of the 31st/42 Battalion are very welcome,” The Association President explained.

“Most members attending our reunion served in B Company, Royal Queensland Regiment, Mackay, Sarina, and outer districts of Moranbah, Dysart and Middlemount. Some of our Members will travel from all points of Queensland to attend this reunion.”

Mr Edwards said the reunion will celebrate, honour and remember the contribution to Australia that our fallen comrades have given to each and every one of us.

“We salute their service, today’s brave young soldiers, the surviving troubled returned veterans and our departed soldiers from all conflicts.

“In doing so, we prepare a place for the Unknown Soldier, adorned with a wreath, a slouch hat and webbing.

“Their actions, kinship and spirit, is the foundation behind the pride of the 42nd Infantry Battalion and in turn, so too, the 42nd Infantry Battalion Association, which was formed by the returned soldiers of World War II. “Our Australian and Queensland flags and Association Banner will decorate the room.”

PIONEER VALLEY

THE waters at Boulder Creek’s picnic ground are crystal clear.

Every year, over 100 locals celebrate Australia Day at Boulder Creek’s picturesque and beautiful picnic ground, which is on the old Bruce Highway route to the north.

Boulder Creek’s picnic ground and Boulder Creek were at times polluted by passers-by until in 1995, when local farmers held sausage sizzles to raise half the money to build a Windyloo bush toilet.

A local farmer, the late Eric Jackson and surrounding farmers even built five weatherproof concrete tables and seats, using a borrowed mould from Mirani Lions Club.

Then with the help of former Councillor Joan Byers, the Pioneer Council were so impressed with the farmers submission that it totally funded Boulder Creek’s lone toilet.

Everything went well until April 14 this year, when the future of Boulder Creek’s pristine picnic ground and swimming hole fell under a cloud.

The Mackay Regional Council wrote to surrounding residents condemning the toilet as dangerous and unsafe and fenced it off, as part of a wider review of Council’s remote toilets.

But it didn’t take too long before desperate tourists and motorists removed the Council fence so they could use Boulder Creek’s lone bush toilet and picnic ground.

The Council letter claimed that ‘due to safety concerns, the Windyloo bush toilet and water tank stand will be removed’.

“The Windyloo toilet is in very poor condition physical condition, several of the mountings securing the prefabricated structure to the

foundation have failed.

“This means that the structure could easily become airborne in high winds (as a flying dunny)…the condition of the timber framing had deteriorated.

“Given the risk to public safety, the Mackay Regional Council is planning to remove both structures.”

Distraught local farmers have commissioned an independent engineering report arranged by farmers’ spokesman and lawyer, Charles Haughton.

“The Kuttabul Engineering report found that there are no safety risks or dangers to the public, plus that there is no timber framing to deteriorate,” Mr Houghton declared.

The Mackay Regional Council’s letter also stated that ‘the parkland…(on the side of the road) is contained on private property and that the route used to access the swimming hole from the park also passes through the adjacent landholding’.

“This means that currently, members of the public are trespassing on private property when using the park or accessing the swimming hole.”

Mackay Regional Council Mayor Greg Williamson told this newspaper, “Council had received the ratepayers’ petition and Council will work to find a resolution, which is complicated as part of the park is on private property.”

‘Scary’ local suicide rate linked to mines Awareness blast

By DAVID LORNIE CONCERNS are again being raised that mining workers’ social conditions are contributing to our region’s unacceptably high suicide rate.

According to a local mental healthcare professional, the Mackay Whitsunday and Isaac region has the highest suicide rate in the country, with around three-quarters of cases being male.

“We’ve got a significant issue in this region,” Chris Attard General Manager of selectibility in Mackay told this newspaper.

“I don’t have the hard evidence to back (these figures) up but, from the information that we have been given, when you combine the Mackay, Whitsunday and Isaac regions together, we have the highest death by suicide of anywhere in the country.”

Whilst there are some statistics available, they are historical and don’t provide an accurate picture.

Chris said the reason solid statistics around suicide are publicly unavailable is that, whilst local mental health organisations see the damage firsthand, “the Government and associated health bodies are very guarded about the statistics around suicide. So, you will not find any of those published anywhere”.

Chris said that mine workers are a significantly at-risk group.

“One of the main contributors

DEPRESSION: It can lead to negative thoughts and actions to feeling suicidal is loneliness and depression,” Chris said. “And if you throw on top of that isolation, loneliness, anxiety, then your depression spirals downwards.

“So, if you look at the mining sector, there’s a lot of single men working in the mining sector or there’s a lot of married men but they are doing long, isolated shifts away from any support networks – so you can see where isolation starts to play a part.”

Chris said that a “significant proportion of workers in the mine here at the Bowen Basin are ex-military.

“So if you throw in their military exposure…and you layer over it that isolated, very male culture – filled with bravado, drugs and alcohol etc – it’s just a melting pot for poor mental health.”

It is generally accepted in the mental health community that around 60 percent of the population will suffer from some form of mental health issue in their lifetime – though only a small

proportion will end up in a more complex state which could lead to people considering suicide.

“Seventy five percent of deaths by suicide are male, even though more females than males will present themselves to a councillor or their GP saying they’ve got a mental health issue,” Chris said.

“The irony of this is it suggests more women have more mental health issues but are more likely to seek help, whereas men don’t seek help and they end up getting to a point where they try to take their own life.

“And that’s really quite scary.”

Fortunately, there are a significant number of resources available locally for those who need help with mental health issues – from local GPs and hospitals to specialised services such as selectability, headspace and Grapevine Group.

Mental Health was also recognised by the Federal Government as a significant issue in its recent budget and Chris is confi-

dent there will be money allocated to benefit our local mental health services. “(Federal funding) filters down through the federal primary health network,” he said. “And we have a very active primary health network in this area, so I’m quite certain that the money promised will make its way through the network out to the areas that need it.”

WHITSUNDAY Ballers will be hosting a suicide awareness event on September 25 and are currently looking for sponsors.

The group is a not-for-profit community gel blasting organisation who began by just getting together to play gel-ball skirmish on weekends.

They have developed into a diverse social support group for men, with members from many different cultures and backgrounds Apart from the sporting and recreational aspect, the group offers other positive benefits for its members including a focus on physical, social and emotional wellbeing.

The group has a specific focus on nurturing male mental health. Member Daniel credits the group with providing valuable support during dark days.

“Whitsunday Ballers have been a tremendous support throughout my mental health journey. I couldn’t have got where I am today without their support,” he said.

All proceeds from the September event will be donated to Real Mates Talk who will also be conducting mental health awareness on the day.

Real Mates Talk, an initiative of the Suicide Prevention Com-

munity Action Planning group and delivered by selectability, is an ongoing campaign aiming to prevent male suicide.

The campaign encourages men and women to ask for help if they are struggling. It offers emotional support and connections with the wider community.

There are ambassadors across the region who share information about how to ask for help and where to get it.

These men act as role models for breaking down stigma, raising community awareness and ensuring men know what supports are available to them.

They are currently conducting a survey to gather baseline data on community utilisation of help for mental health and suicidal concerns Whitsunday Ballers event organiser Shannon Taylor said his group is concerned about the “high rates of people who suffer with mental health related issues in our region…we are pleased for the community to come together, to raise awareness of mental health and to help combat the stigma.”

As news.com.au reported on May 19 in response to the federal government’s announcement of plans to build a gas plant in the Hunter Valley, Deloitte economist Nicki Hutley said gas no longer made economic sense in Australia.

“It drives up electricity prices, it increases emissions at a time when the rest of the world is reducing emissions, and it creates very few jobs,” she said.

“The majority of benefit from this move will be concentrated in the hands of large gas corporations at the expense of lives and livelihoods.

“The government should invest in renewable energy technology.”

These facts highlight why there should be no development of gas in the northern Bowen Basin (or anywhere else).

Renewables backed with batteries are cheaper than new fossil fuel generation, more reliable, and by far safer for the future of our planet and our species.

IT BEGGARS belief that we have reached a stage in this country where not one, but two, of our critical ports have been handed over under lifetime leases to foreign entities.

I have previously referred to the need to take back the Port of Darwin, handed over to Chinese interests under a 99-year lease in 2015.

What is potentially even worse is the situation faced by the Port of Newcastle, the world’s biggest coal export port, sold off in a 50/50 deal to Hastings fund management, and wait for it, China Merchants Group, a state-owned corporation of the People’s Republic of China.

The Port of Newcastle 98-year deal was signed in 2014, so in both cases we have critical port infrastructure in foreign hands for another 90 years.

The Port of Newcastle has faced trouble from the moment it was handed over to new owners.

There have been massive hikes in charges to the coal-mining companies who are dependent on the port to export our coal around the world.

Glencore, an employer of many workers in our region, took the port’s new owners to court to battle the price hikes, and won.

But it appears those price hikes, are becoming an issue again.

So what we have is a foreign entity exercising undue influence over market conditions for one of our biggest exports!

You have to wonder if this is another tactic of the Chinese Communist Party to sabotage our key export industries.

We must face the facts on foreign investment and take the action necessary to preserve Australia’s interests.

This was made clear in the Pivot report from the Trade and Investment Growth Committee, which I chaired.

The report made the recommendation to Government that not only the Port of Darwin, ‘but any ports or strategic infrastructure’ be brought back under Australian ownership.

Not-so-sweet numbers COMMENT By ANDREW STEWART IF YOU are concerned about health and obesity and sugar towns, here’s three important numbers – 72, 69, 41.

The first is the amount that US cane farmers are guaranteed for a tonne of their cane by their government. The second is the amount the Indian government guarantees their farmers for a tonne of cane.

The last is the amount that an Australian cane farmer, with reasonable sugar content and good forward pricing got for last year’s crop per tonne.

Might get to $45 or even $50 a tonne this year. Note currencies and seasons might throw the numbers around a

bit, but the proportions remain much the same.

So the health fans who want a sugar tax to try to control obesity will need a very significant tax to make any difference.

While the US and Indian governments underwrite their cane farmers (and also offer cheap subsidised diesel, electricity and water), Australian farmers pay the highest input costs and have to just take the world price (with some small adjustment for some supply to some of the Australian market).

That makes Australian sugar input costs for food manufacturers in Australia the cheapest in the world. And Japan, Korea and Indonesia which

import much of our exported sugar also benefit.

It also means that cereal and drink manufacturers in Australia have an incentive to load in extra sugar because it is so cheap. It is certainly much cheaper than most processed grains, nuts and dried fruit that goes into your brekky favourite or those beverages ranging from fruit drinks to gin to beer.

So the health fans say the answer is to put a tax on sugar.

Given you can buy a kilo of raw sugar from between 99 cents to $4.32 at my local supermarket, a sugar tax is going to be a difficult tax to implement.

And it just sends more money to Canberra to waste on overpriced underperforming French submarines, unused COVID vaccines, milliondollar consultancies and any number

of other federal government spending boondoogles.

But if governments are going to be pushed to increase the price of sugar in an effort to reduce calorie intake of the obese, then here’s a better way.

We accept that as a free trading nation, albeit with a seriously tilted ‘level playing field’ against us, Australia is going to accept the world price for sugar for exports.

But we could put a significant extra price on domestic sugar, which could add $5, $10, even $20 to a tonne of all cane (that’d add 15 to 50 cents per kilo of local raw sugar depending on the quality of the cane, the proportion of cane for Australian use versus exports, and how much the middle men take).

But the levy on all cane would been paid as an extra payment to cane farmers.

That would spark a renewal of the sugar cane industry.

Farmers who have barely broken even for the last decade would have the funds to replace the old tractors and machinery, to upgrade irrigation and those leaking hoses (about $8000 a hose), and importantly to replan their farms for greater efficiency and greater environmental outcomes.

The benefit would be to sugar towns and communities, to a reinvigoration of farming families, to better environmental outcomes - and for the health proponents of higher sugar prices to reduce obesity.

And with the money going directly to cane farmers, the money would be spent in the regions, not siphoned off to the big cities.

Sounds like a commonsense, good outcome all round.

Mackay needs love WHATEVER the politics, whatever the agreements, deals, ins and outs; one thing is certain: Mackay’s City Heart is in need of a little love.

Not so much from the aesthetic perspective – the community jury is still out around whether the millions spent on the CBD beautification was worth it or not, and that it not something we need to revisit here.

But the sprawl of our local urban disposition has activated a series of suburb-centric, almost satellite community “hubs” to which people gravitate instead of coming “all the way into town”.

The love our City Heart needs, is more of the kind which is strategic and sustainable.

Whether the Riverfront precinct is/was to be all that; well, we don’t know. Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. But the box it ticked was bringing people back into the Mackay city area.

The centre is this month featuring its winter collection, including an array of clothing from many of our 50 crafters.

The range covers from adults to children, and includes many wonderfully warm hand-made knitware creations.

Pop in and have a look at their range, which is competitively priced with manufactured goods. They have also got a wide range of other crafted products.

The centre is open 10-3 Monday to Friday and 10-1 weekends.

Show us your tatts INDIA SAYS: My I love my tattoos because not only do they remind me of my childhood but they bring joy to so many people (kids and adults).

There are pockets of land where, if developed and marketed correctly, families could come in, build houses and make those suburbs closest to the City Heart (namely, South, East, West and Central Mackay) their homes – kind of like what it used to be.

Ive met a few people who have struck up a conversation about it with me and have even had people want to take photos as they’ve reminded them of a loved one.

Unlike 20 years or so ago, our councils have been proactive in developing living opportunities to meet the demands of changing family home expectations.

Now, we have apartment living, small blocks, larger blocks, acreages – all within a half hour drive of the city. Although, it has to be said that, with an improved traffic network from the likes of Andergrove and the Northern Beaches that travel time would be significantly reduced. But that’s another story.

Some people question my decision but I definitely don’t regret them and always love when people ask about them.

As the population grows – and our focus inevitably shifts away a coal-powered economy (that’s also another story for another day!) – our re-focus on what will bring people (families!) back to the centre of town is something we need to lend acute attention to.

Origin a gladiatorial fight to death

FRIENDS, Romans, footy fans...

Think State of Origin Rugby League; think fighting to the death in the Roman Colosseum. Think how a legitimate comparison can be made between the two.

The gladiatorial aspects of the contests are obvious but there’s an even more legitimate reason.

Current day Queensland and the ancient Roman Empire, at least where the Colosseum was concerned, have a lot in common.

I have previously said Queenslanders could be forgiven for thinking the Labor Party election strategists had studied ancient history and employed some of the tactics used many centuries ago by Roman politician Vespasian.

Does this scenario sound familiar? “The building of the Colosseum is significant in Roman history because, without the Colosseum being there to distract the Romans, there would have been a lot more riots and protests around the empire.

“The Colosseum was built in 80 CE for entertainment purposes so that the public would be distracted from what was happening in other cities around them. This plan was successful too, because the people’s main focus became what events were happening in the Colosseum.

“Vespasian’s plan to distract the Romans was pure genius, and it worked well.”

Replace Colosseum with sporting events, Romans with Queenslanders, and Vespasian with Palaszczuk, and 80 CE Rome becomes 2020-21 Queensland.

And the comparisons continue: “When first opened, Titus (Emperor by then) declared a 100-day celebration of games that included gladiatorial combats and wild animal fights. Around 9000 wild animals were slaughtered during this event alone. ”The gladiatorial shows or battles were a demonstration of both power and prestige and were very popular with the crowd.”

And in 2020 Queensland? Annastacia The Omnipotent (ATO) declared a 135-day celebration of AFL games (June 11 to October 24) including what AFL fans regard as gladiatorial combats, and some wild animals/birds were also killed off in the process — Lions, Bulldogs, Roos, Hawks, Crows, Eagles, Magpies, and Swans for example.

The Colosseum was built as part of an imperial effort to revitalise Rome after the tumultuous year.

The sporting capital of Australia was “built” to revitalise Queensland during a tumultuous COVID-19 year.

Heeere’s Fester! Loving the honesty of relationships

ALL YOU fans of the 4CRM 107.5FM regular column, you are in for a treat this week. We are profiling Uncle Fester! No – not the ugly old guy from “The Addams Family”. No, this is 4CRM’s Uncle Fester also known as Greg, bossman extraodinaire!

How did you come to be involved with 4CRM? Sandy was already volunteering in the station in the office, and had a couple of technical issues that I was able to get sorted out - she dragged me in there really!!

How long have you been at 4CRM? Involved since late 2013.

Do you have a title? Station Manager/Mr Fixit.

What’s the name of your show and what type of music do you play on it? Uncle Fester Blues Show is my favourite. Didn’t know very much about the blues when I started (had previously been into Rock) but absolutely now love blues music.

Who’s your favourite musician? Do you play an instrument? Larkin Poe, Dave Hole, Deep Purple, Bad Company - lots of favourite bands!! I play guitar and have since I was 16. It’s also how I met Sandy; she was singing in another band and my band went along to check them out!!

Favourite band ten years ago? Deep Purple Who is your role model and why? My Dad as he could make anything out of scrap - you learned to just make do.

The one thing we would not hear you say is? I enjoy listening to rap music while I’m eating healthy food; or I hate chocolate; and it can’t be done!

When have you been most satisfied in your life? Having grandkids born is the most fantastic event I can think of!

If you could have dinner with anyone in the world who would you choose and why? Russell Morris - he’s done a lot in the music world; Molly Meldrum or Robert Mutt Lange to pick their record producing brains; and Bill Boyd as he enjoys a good scotch whisky too!!

What would be your superpower if you could choose? To make everyone happy!

Your guilty pleasure is? Chocolate and Hot Wok No 15A. How do you like your eggs? Runny yolk What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? If you’re confronted with a problem just start as best you can, get advice and figure the rest out as you go.

What do you like best about 4CRM? The variety of music and presenters.

Papavasiliou Life most fabulous I LOVE the honesty of my relationships.

Over the years I have come to know – and truly appreciate – people in my life who tell it as it is, and for whom friendship, acquaintance or association is based on a level of real and unapologetic honesty.

During the past couple of months, I have had the chance to reconnect with people and rekindle relationships which I had let kinda go by the wayside during recent years.

For many reasons I was quite happy to bury myself in work, family and what I termed the “busyness” of life with kids heavily invested in extra-curricular chaos, and hide under a rock – emerging only when I absolutely had to. My friends got it. They knew the deal and, bless them and their fabulousness, they understood.

The others, either thought I had just dropped off the radar, didn’t care or didn’t miss that I wasn’t around; and none of that really mattered. It was what it was!

This week, though, I had a bit of a startling reality thrown at me when someone I had known for quite some time – but we had only really had a business association and were only on each others’ periphery – threw me well-intended, but still (completely unintentionally) brutal truth.

“When I saw your message, I did wonder what was happening, because you know, I thought, well, Meredith only really gets in touch with me if she wants something!”

Blimey that hurt! And struck a chord! Because, to an extent, it’s true – although with any take, I believe firmly in an offering of ‘give’.

Reassuringly, they said it wasn’t an insult or slight – and I known this person and love their honesty such that I believe them – but it still made me think.

Another old school friend and I, who have only recently reacquainted, met for a coffee and catch up and following on, they text me to be sure that everything we spoke about stayed

FRIENDS: Be honest, be genuine, be real between us. Given their position, and given they were talking to a newspaper editor, it was a sensible inquiry for them to make.

The third in this cadence of relationship revelation, came over a lunch meeting with a mate and former colleague.

We talked about a lot of things but we talked most about the value of relationships – as in REAL relationships.

It was crystalising.

See, the real relationships are the ones where you can call it as it is and ask the questions.

They are the ones which are nurtured, but not in the way where you have to walk on eggshells or make hard work of them.

Of course, there are some which will be harder to make work than others – and some for which you will fight for harder than others - but if there is one thing I have learned over the years, it’s that the best relationships are those built on mutual understanding, respect and honesty.

Those are the ones which endure the test of time, adversity, good times and bad.

There is a lot to be said for that old truth,

that the best of friendships (and not in the BFF sense) are those where you might not speak for ages, but when you do it’s like it was only yesterday you last connected.

Not everyone is your friend. Not every friend will be a friend for life.

Another beautiful old (as in longevity, not age!) friend recited to me that adage, “Friends for a reason, season and life”.

My goodness, that is true.

Whatever the reason or season, or whether for life; or whether they’re an associate, an acquaintance or a friend for good times and bad – there remains one steadfast nucleus from which the relationship stems.

Honesty. First. Last. And at every juncture in between.

If you have that, then you have everything.

And my goodness, that is fabulous!

Mackay Ballet Workshop pivots forward STUDIO 53 was the venue for the Mackay Ballet Workshop held over three days last weekend.

International Dance Affair principal, Sandra Danastas, who hosted the workshop said it was attended by almost two hundred of Mackay’s finest Ballet dancers from seven studios.

Ballet students from local dance studios - International Dance Affair, Leisa Payne School of Dance, Fame Talent School, Aspire Performing Arts and Theatre Arts Mackay - attended the workshop. There were also students from Proserpine dance schools;

Dee Jays School of Dance and Chez’s House of Dance.

Miss Heidi Landford, director of Prudence Bowen Atelier on the Gold Coast was the guest teacher for the workshop.

Heidi trained full-time under Prudence Bowen, a Royal Academy of Dance examiner and during this time she was a semi-finalist in the 2008 Genee International Ballet Competition, runner-up in three consecutive Royal Academy of Dance Scholarships and the recipient of several bursaries and awards from eisteddfods in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast.

Heidi completed all RAD

examinations with distinction and finished her Solo Seal in 2009.

This was Heidi’s sixth annual workshop in Mackay. She enjoys passing her knowledge and expertise in the RAD Ballet area onto the students in Mackay and has watched them grow and develop over the last six years.

This year the workshop covered grades one to five and also major exam work from Intermediate Foundation to Advanced Foundation.

The participating teachers and students all gained a wealth of knowledge over the weekend.

Karen contacted Lucy and purchased her zero waste non toxic dishwasher tabs. They met for the drop off.

Karen shared her vision for the Whitsundays to be the first zero waste town in

Australia. Lucy said “let’s go”.

We started to create a Zero Waste community to share resources.

This quote from the poet John Dryden is right to the point as we pause to reflect on the fifth anniversary of the Greater Whitsunday Farmers Market It’s really is remarkable to see how far we’ve come and the enormous possibilities ahead in the future.

Those who threw their support behind the market in the early days shared some recollections of that time with me at our fifth birthday market celebration.

Mary-Ann Refalo remembers that very first market day when a small collection of stalls joined with a Food Co-op from Bowen-Gumlu Growers Association to bolster the amount of produce on offer.

“It was overwhelming, there were so many people there and we really weren’t sure what to expect” she said. “Today we’re still very much a family-run operation.

Riding for Disabled Association Mackay Volunteer, Donna Moore said some of the activities in the lessons are fun games.

“We play games with them that helps build their strength and their stretching,” Mrs Moore said.

“Each week we do different games, we know the students, so we know exactly what we need to do to help them.

“Basically, each week, we actually see them get better and better. Which is really rewarding for us.”

However, Mrs Moore said she loves volunteering at the association due to her passion for helping people.

“We’re all actually here for the students, we’re not here for ourselves. We have a wonderful group of students – everyone’s here for the people that come riding.”

She is proud of the Association and explained they had a wonderful group of volunteers and very friendly horses.

“We have wonderful horses that are really great with the horses, they’re very quiet. Well organised organisation,” she said.

However, the Association is always looking for more passionate volunteers to help make a difference.

“It’s a great organisation, just helping people is wonderful,” she said.

LOCAL businesses will continue to pay the lowest average workers’ compensation premiums in any state or territory, with average premiums remaining unchanged next year.

Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace said the average WorkCover premium would be maintained at $1.20 per $100 of wages paid for 2021-2022. “We have not raised the average premium rate since we came to office in 2015, while continuing to improve benefits for sick and injured workers,” Ms Grace said.“WorkCover will also maintain the 5 per cent discount for early payment.”

The State Government held its first Housing and Domestic and Family Violence Roundtable this week – a new initiative to ensure women and children have access to safe and affordable housing. Attorney-General Shannon Fentiman said the Roundtable was a great opportunity to investigate long-term housing solutions for those experiencing violence. “Women and children impacted by domestic and family violence are often in unsafe or unstable housing situations and when combined with income insecurity they face the added danger of homelessness,” Minister Fentiman said. “We need to look at what more we can do.”

And they’d be justified, having had to cancel last year’s event – which went the way of most events in 2020, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.

President Ross Dodt said the 2021 Mackay Show was all about going back to the community and focusing on everything that has made the event the premier event on Mackay region’s social calendar for the past 143 years.

“We are giving the show back to those it belongs to,” Mr Dodt

said. “It’s the community’s event and that is where we are focusing this year.”

Mr Dodt said the traditional 500 Pavilion Upstairs Members Lounge would be reinstated for this year’s event, providing a peaceful and well-appointed space for Mackay Show Association members and volunteers for the event, to take time out, enjoy a bite to eat and rest their weary feet!

He said the popular Art on Show event had been reschedule to August, to make the space in the 500 Pavilion available to members.

Art on Show is an annual Art Prize which has been a fixture of

the Mackay Show for the past 13 years. Now sponsored by Woolams, the event will now be held in conjunction with a series of workshops and artists’ events from August 6-9.

Mr Dodt said the three-day Mackay Show would be a fully COVID-safe event with special placement of attractions and event planning taken into consideration for everything from Sideshow Alley, to the ring events, to Fireworks, to Pavilion displays.

He said upon arrival at the event each day, show-goers would need to either register their attendance via scanning a QR code; or a form could be downloaded from the Mackay Show website (mack-

ayshow.com.au) and completed prior to arrival, to be placed in a box at the entry gate.

Gates open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 9am.

The action will continue until 10pm both Tuesday and Wednesday nights, and until 4pm Thursday, which is People’s Day and the Mackay Show Day Public Holiday.

Fireworks will be staged at 7pm and 9pm Tuesday, and 9pm Wednesday.

Gate prices for the event are: Adults - $20 | Child / Concession - $15 | Children 6years and Under – Free | Families (two adults and two children) - $50.

Taylah keeps herself busy as it is, with her love of Cosplay, alternative fashion, art, golf, and photography – and these days she is also actively nurturing a new local community – linking through so-

cial media – for others who share her Lolita passion.

“There’s not a lot of us, we didn’t have many people at the last meet we had, but I love seeing people around town with different fashion styles and I would love to get all of us together.

COMFORTABLE “We have an active Facebook group and my hope is that this will help people feel more comfortable, because maybe (and a big maybe as I can’t assume others) there are people in our community who are not comfortable wearing alternative fashion in public due to harassment from others, or fear of unwanted stares and attention.”

When it comes to those three words: Individuality, fun and empowerment, Taylah brings it in spades!

And it is something she wants to share around.

That, to her, is what community should be built on.

New gold prospect THREE new prospective projects are being eyed for the Queensland gold belt by Ballymore Resources - one of which is located between Mackay and Collinsville.

Ballymore Resources are a junior explorer and developer, but noticed the belt is under-explored using modern techniques.

Ballymore Resources has a proven track record for success, such as the Discovery of Mount Wright (1Moz) and delineation of the Nolans/ Sarsfield mines (4.8Moz) in close proximity to Ravenswood Project.

In addition, they have experienced success with the start-up and operation of a Capricorn Copper and Ernest Henry Mine, along with founding ASX listed companies, Stanmore Coal and Renascor Resources.

The promising projects will be the Ruddygore, near Chillagoe, which has a large copper porphyr target, along with Ravenswood mine, which has drill ready targets in 17Moz gold province.

The second project is located near Ravenswood town.

The third and final project will be Dittmer, which is near Proserpine.

It’s a busy time of year for growers with the harvest now under way but we’ve had a better season than in other years and there is some great looking cane around.

What makes a great regional Show?

Not the Dagwood Dogs, sideshow alley or the rides - you can find these at any show. No, it is our regional community and local people showing what the region can produce which is unique. In our region, that means the sugar industry, and it

certainly has much to be proud of.

We hope that Sugarcane Competition entries will be up this year. We seek to return to a traditional agricultural show and the lessons that can be learnt by kids and their families displaying their cane.

Families who win prizes for entering cane in the schools’ section for their kids will benefit the schools’ P&Cs – a very worthwhile endeavour.

Coupled with the competition, we are pleased to announce we are holding our first Sugar Industry Trade Exhibition in the Sugarcane Pavilion, which is situated immediately on your left as you come in the gate off Milton Street opposite Alfred Street.

We have asked all our generous sponsors of the Sugarcane Competition – and a few special guests – to put on a display to show off our modern and innovative sugar industry.

We have produced this feature to help

you find your way to the special attractions we have on display – please come and visit!

There are two main areas to explore – inside and outside.

First, take a good look inside the Sugar Pavilion. Here you will find some of the thought going into the future of the industry with QUT’s Renewable Biocommodities Pilot Plant offering a virtual tour and showing you what can be produced with sugarcane apart from sugar!

There are also displays showing how agricultural technology can be used to improve efficiencies in sugarcane planting (the Griffith University site), in monitoring and managing a growing crop (the Aerial Asset Control site), in using sugarcane itself to produce an environmentally friendly fertilizer for a new crop (the Wilmar Bio Dunder site) and the modern way in which transport operations are tracked from the harvest siding to the mill (the

Sugarcane crops are often rotated with ‘green manure’ crops to build up the soil’s nitrogen naturally. Some of these, such as soybeans and other legumes, can be harvested for food or animal feed. MAPS is keen to show off a new legumes planter which will be on display in the outside area. If you think you know your cane varieties, a guessing competition will also be held by MAPS in the Sugar Pavilion.

Street legal 1983 Commodore fit for track PICTURED here is Tylyn Barron in his 1983 Holden VH Commodore SL/E. He has owned the car for around eight years and it was originally all silver and had a 308 engine in it.

This has since had a bit of a makeover with a two-tone paint job and extensive engine and driveline work.

It is now a 355ci with VN heads, 288 cam, roller rockers, high rise manifold and a 750 carby on top.

The transmission is a built manualised trimatic with a 5000 stall convertor driving a shortened VL turbo diff with 31 spline billet axles.

The car was built to have some fun at the track and still

be able to do street duties with family and friends.

Tylyn runs a Facebook group called True Street Cars Central Queensland Mackay which hold Friday night meet ups every three weeks at Ooralea Woolworths car park.

Like the page on Facebook to keep up to date with up coming meet ups and events.

Hot cars are in the blood KIRSTEN Sanfilippos has owned this 1973 LJ Torana since 2006.

But she has had a passion for cars from the day she was born.

That’s because her parents are hot rodders with fuel running through their veins.

Her dad did a lot of work on the Torana including the motor transplant.

Originally this car was or-

chid metallic, sporting a 186cu six cylinder and M20 four speed.

Firstly this car had an engine/gearbox transplant in 2009 which consisted of a V6 and 4L60E four-speed auto from a 1993 VR commodore.

In 2013 the car was taken off the road to be stripped down.

David Paton, a good friend, helped out with rust repairs thena fresh coat of paint and

chrome work were added to the car you see today.

Many hours of blood, sweat and tears by many people have gone into this car to get it to where it is now.

The whole family enjoys going for a cruise whenever they can. A highlight was that Kirsten got to take this beauty to Toranafest in Newcastle back in September 2019.

OUT of the top five most popular fishing spots inland from Mackay, the Upper Pioneer Valley scores two of the prime locations on the list.

Just a short drive west of Mackay along the Mackay Eungella Road brings you to Marian.

From here you can turn off to Kinchant Dam only 41 kms out of Mackay Central. It is probably one of the easiest dams to access from the coast. It is here at Kinchant that you will always find an ample supply of Barra.

At this time of the year make sure you rug up for the early morning chill, but the effort is all worthwhile when you pull up one of the monsters that lurk in

the deep water. If you are more adventurous and enjoy walking the creeks, Cattle Creek just at the back of Finch Hatton usually has a good supply of Sooty Grunter.

Work the shallows with a quick cast and retrieve for plate size Sooties and for the larger Grunters look for the deeper holes where they prefer to lie low.

Other dams close by include Teemburra and Eungella.

Teemburra is accessed by leaving the Mackay Eungella Road at Pinnacle and driving up to the dam on top of the hill.

Some of the bends here are tight so try not to get distracted with the fantastic views of cane farms stretching across the valley floor.

Eungella Dam is perhaps best suited to weekend camping when you want to escape for some much needed R’n’R.

The facilities are well maintained, and this location is ideal for taking the kids and throwing up the tent.

There’s plenty of room for the kids to run around when they are not chasing the elusive fish and camping around open fires in the evening can be magical.

Ultimately the fishing is great in the upper Pioneer Valley.

At this time of the year the weather is perfect with crisp mornings and bright sunny days that average around 26 degrees.

Next time you are visiting the upper Pioneer Valley plan to spend a few extra days for there’s much more to see and do in the state parks, waterways and gorges.

Camp out or book in to a choice of stays up at Eungella and enjoy the fishing!

Cold snap chills the region ON THE weather front, it’s cold nights and mornings, if you haven’t realised already.

Only to hang around until Sunday night then should start being a little bit warmer before the next cold streak.

While we have temperatures hitting below zero up at Eungella, it’s only a little warmer in the Mackay region of morning temps from 5°C on the coastline and 2°C around the Pioneer Valley with 0°C at the foot of the Eungella Range and -2°C up the top with frost around the Pioneer Valley.

Sunday morning will be a little warmer but also with the light winds there is a good chance of light to heavy fog around. So please drive to conditions if

you happen to find yourself in a fog patch. Besides the early morning fog it should be a pretty fine and Sunny weekend.

Out on the water: Friday we have South to Southwesterly at around 10-15 knots swinging around to South to Southeastetly in the afternoon. Saturday and Sunday are pretty much the same.

Seas are below a metre and the swell will be on ESEly flow below meter as well. So if you can brave the cold, won’t be too bad to head out.

G’DAY to the Mackay Community!

We are now full swing into the month of June and are half way through 2021! This week I focused on my land-based fishing at the Pioneer River and tried a number of different methods of which I would like to share with you.

If you caught my fishing column last week you would have read that Bream are actively on the bite so taking this in to account I opted for live baiting my fishing rod with a herring to see if I could switch up my targeted species.

Herring is a very productive baitfish for nearly all saltwater fish or pelagics and they can be found anywhere from mouths of rivers as far as up where the saltwater meets the freshwater. The herring were everywhere last week, making it very easy to use a cast net to catch enough live bait to have a decent fish with.

I used a basic live bait rig where I attached a sinker to one and a float on the other just to experiment with what was feeding on the bottom and what was feeding off the top. A few Bream were caught on the bottom rig and no big trophy size fish came home with me unfortunately.

Whilst I was down at the Pioneer River an older gentleman came to where I was set up and we began talking about fishing in and around Mackay. This man was 83 and still throwing a 10 foot cast net and hoisting it up full of bait fish. What a local legend!

He assured me that the herring he was collecting was for his next fishing trip out to the outer reef and would fill his freezer up to the delight of his family. So with little to show for the first half of my week I decided to dust off my crab pots and focus on finding the big bucks over the weekend!

Another shoutout to the team at Tackle World Mackay and their variety on fresh bait in store as I was very happy to buy my crab bait for a small exchange of $5.95 and I assure you it did the job!

I had enough bait to give my two pots three chances on catching us the delicious taste of fresh mudcrab. The first set of tides I put my pots in and it looked promising, but unavoidably three Jennies decided to devour the bait and were released

back into the river.

What’s a Jennie, for anyone who is not up to speed with fishing jargon? A Jennie is a female mudcrab and in Qld they are a protected species under the Fisheries Act. Anyone who takes these will have to face enormous fines and morally you just do not do it.

I returned the pots to the water and unfortunately only got a couple more crabs, but they were all too small to take home and cook up.

Ah well, next time!

Fishing is a trial and error sport but I have more spots up my sleeve and will keep everyone posted!

The awesome thing about mudcrabs is they hitch a free ride with the tide, gathering food and travelling in large groups. So, on these next big tides I will be sure to still have my pots in the river - but with some weight inside of my crab pots so that they don’t get taken away with the tide.

It’s fingers crossed for a mudcrab feed. Another great event that was held over the weekend was last Sunday at Blacks Beach the Mackay NAIDOC Inc hosted a NAIDOC fishing competition for kids in the Mackay community.

What an excellent event it was, despite the chilly winds off the South Easterly. The competition started at 6:30am and finished up at 10:30am with prizes for Biggest, Smallest and the Oddest catch.

A young lad named Ethan took out the biggest catch, being a 31cm Dart Fish and won him the $200 BCF voucher prize as well as a fishing shirt.

Well done, mate! The event is a great initiative and another will be hosted by the same organisation on June 13 at Mcreedys Creek, Slade Point starting at 10:30am and going to 2:30pm.

It is free registration, all are welcome and kids must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.Be sure to bring all the necessaries - drinks, food, sunscreen, hat and a chair - even if your not wetting a line and just wanting to relax by the water.

Profits from the sale will help support the Sarina-based team, with money raised helping to fund development and construction around the Sarina AFL grounds.

The works will include change sheds and storage for the Demons’ equipment.

Demons’ president, Shane Floyd, said the team had been honoured to have the guernsey, which had been donated for auction by local sporting royalty, Charlie Brownlow.

The grandson of Charles Brownlow, whom the famous Brownlow Medal was named after, Charlie was eager to help the country club.

“To have someone that significant to the game is just massive, especially since it’s such a

huge Victorian sport,” Floyd said.

“With so many people moving up from the south this game is only going to keep getting bigger here and explode soon.

“Sarina Demons consist of Under 8s, 10s and, more recently, Under 12s. And all teams are mixed boys and girls.

“We’re hoping to have under 14s next year,” Floyd said.

“We are growing fast as a club and are proud to provide Sarina with a different sport, aiming to keep kids active and teaching them some life skills.

“The committee is trying hard to keep everything community based.”

“We’d like to thank Charlie for his kind donation and supporting our team.”

Floyd said while the hype over the Guernsey was building, many were chomping at the bit to get their hands on a ticket to an amaz-

ing piece of sports memorabilia.

“It’s an impressive item to hang in the living room,” he said.

“When Charlie Brownlow travelled down to our Club in Sarina to present the guernsey, he was particularly impressed by the number of girls now participating in the sport compared to years gone by when it was a male dominated sport.

“While the kids are a bit too young to understand the huge presence they had met, for me I was thrilled to meet the AFL legends grandson and I got to shake his hand.”

During the weekend of August 29 we will host a Junior Carnival and home game: Sarina vs Moranbah.

Most of Mackay AFL U8s and U10s will also be in attendance.

“We will also be drawing the winner of the framed, signed guernsey, Floyd said.

“Charlie Brownlow will be in attendance and do a presentation to explain what the Brownlow Medal is really all about.

“With that happening we will have a large crowd of people down there not only just the two teams.”

Tries were hard to come by throughout the match with both teams struggling hard to keep the other at bay.

That was until Maddison Simon saw an opening for Wan-

derers, slipping through the West Tigers’ defence and crossing the white line.

Once more, Jaymie Clancy took the conversion, and set the score at 12-0 to the Chooks.

With the taste of victory still on their lips from last week, the Wanderers pushed on even harder wearing down Tigers’ defence.

all year, however this was to be their final game of the season.

What got you in to footy?

Month medal THE June monthly medal winner at Proserpine golf is John Dodds who had a fine 69 nett.

John is also the C-Ggrade winner, followed by Mark Richards with nett 71. The A-grade winner was Jon Miller with 70 nett from Kaylem Douthwaite on 73, and the B-grade winners were George Meharry who also had 69 nett, from Vic Feldman 70. The Ladies’ winner was Penny Wardroper again with a 69 nett from Noelene Spurway and Tina Badenhorst, both with 73. In the ladies’ rundown were Lyn Muller and Jill Farinelli, 76 and Elspeth Scotford and Heather Luvis on 77.

KAREN Baker, Carmel Kirwan and Ivy Gidding have advanced to the final of Sarina Bowls Club’s ladies triples championships.

They defeated Liz Owen, Clare Stevens and Ethel Gaw 23-8 in the semi-final, what was one of only two competition matches played on the weekend due to players being involved in pennants at other clubs.

In men’s B singles, Ross O’Neil defeated Dennis Cook 25-19.

Lots of laughter was heard at the club on Sunday afternoon as several bowlers enjoyed a game of scroungers.

THE first three matches of Whitsunday Darts’ Sunday Premier League saw Rooster Coutts take on Ross Gallichan, Dick O’Hara take on Andy Peel, and Gene Birse take on Jamie Maher. Rooster needed a win to stay in the top four after the weekends play, Jamie was looking to go level in points with Gene in second place, and Andy was looking to close the gap on the top four and continue his good run of form of late. Ross took a commanding lead in his match over Rooster and never looked back winning 6-3, the same story in Andy’s 6-2 victory over Dick.

THE men’s fours final for Proserpine bowls was played Saturday morning between Martin Corr, Jonathan Bye, Nathan Harriott and Wayne Handley vs Nathan Dodds, Todd Leys, Scott Hamilton and Gavin Milne.

This was a close game all the way through until the 17th end when Gavin’s team picked up four shots to lead 17 to 10 and went on to the win 20 to 11. Some competition games will be played over the next two weeks whilst the Australian Open is on at the Gold Coast. If you can arrange to play any games, please do so.

Rounds five and six of the Men’s Pennants were played over the weekend. Round 5 saw our Division 1 side at home to Mackay Bowls Club, Saturday afternoon.

This was a tight tussle all the way until the end with Mackay getting the win 65 to 63.

Red-hot rugby round a real sizzler ROUND Seven of the Mackay Rugby union kicked off with Northern rivals Bowen Mud Crabs hosting the red hot Whitsunday Raiders at the Bowen Sports Complex.

The first affair in Airlie had been one-sided but this time, when Bowen crossed for the first try of the match through Qld Country Rep Nick Poole Bowen at the 10 min mark, the Muddies had sent a message they were ready to play.

But the Raiders regathered and unleased their slick backline, running in the next two tries to take the lead at the halfway mark.

PIONEER Swimming Club swimmer Ava Conlon-Wyllie, 9, returned to the pool last weekend at Pioneer’s first Short Course Swim carnival held at the Mackay ARC 25m pool.

The club has not hosted an event like this before, especially in these recent chilly conditions. The swimmers are conditioned to competing in the NQ heat of summer, with current conditions considered exceptional.

Ava is almost considered a veteran in the swimming community, having competed for several years now. She joined Pioneer Swim Club in 2018, however recently she has taken some time away from the pool.

Last weekend saw Ava compete in six events where she smashed out personal bests in three of them.

Ava was certainly not alone on the day, having her very own cheer squad chanting from the sidelines.

Pioneer Swim Team had 30 swimmers

with the Raiders managing to gain the ascendency and score the only three tries of the half.

This gave them a comfortable 28-5 win to establish themselves the favourites, remaining undefeated in 2021.

Slade Point played host to Brothers in a match dedicated to past Slade Point player Jason Trim who sadly passed recently.

This inspired the Slashers who flew out of the gates and put the first two tries of the game on the board to leave Brothers shell shocked.

First points in the second half were crucial and 20 minutes into the half Slade Point struck first.

Led by Captain Jono Robertson, they poured on three more tries to control the remainder of the match.

Slade point had exacted revenge on the Fish to win the match 36-14.

The final match saw Mackay City take on Kuttabul at Lions Park - always a tough encounter and this game again delivered.

The first 15 minutes was an all-out attack with both teams going try for try, with the halftime score at 14-14.

The Redman gained the early points in the second half, with the first two tries.

But Kuttabul found some fight and worked their way into the game through their stylish prop Riccardo Varela who crossed for his second try of the match.

The game would be tied at four tries apiece but the boot of City Kicker Jesse Meinicke proved the difference - making all his conversions and securing a City win, 27-37.

Mackay Boxing Club punches on Mackay Boxing Club has been busy over the last several weeks travelling up to Cairns, out to Cloncurry and down to Gladstone covering nearly 4000kms.

On Saturday May 1, they travelled up to Cairns to take part in the “Do It” Boxing Club tournament in Holloways Beach.

They managed to match four boxers on a 12-bout card.

These were brothers Macen (14yrs) and Memphis Algie (12yrs), Austin Armitage (11yrs) and Luke Dunn (20yrs).

Unfortunately, rain saw the event pulled up short but the team still managed to get three of their boxers on before the rain interruption.

Macen, Luke and Austin all managed to get a hit-out and all performed very well taking out the win.

Unfortunately due to the rain interruption Memphis didn’t get the chance to make it a clean sweep for Mackay Boxing Club.

Nextext the team travelled out to Cloncurry on the 22nd May for the Cloncurry PCYC Boxing Club tournament.

Unfortunately they only managed to match young Austin Armitage up for this one.

And there were concerns as he was matched against an older, heavier opponent.

Austin had experience on his side and it showed as he dominated through all three rounds and

picked up the win in what was a very technical boxing display.

Finally on the last weekend of May, the team travelled to Gladstone with five athletes for the Gladstone Boxing Club tournament.

There was a mix of young boxers Macen, Memphis, Austin and older boxers with Jessie King (36) and Kial Engstrom (42) the older ones.

All boxers had good hard bouts ahead of them but their busy schedule and training had them well prepared.

First up Jessie took on a girl from the Gold Coast in what was an even contest across all three rounds.

Jessie had a bit of ring rust due to not being in the ring for some time but she stayed busy and out-pointed her opponent in a solid performance.

The youngest boxer Austin Armitage was in next and once again he didn’t upset with his performance.

Austin matched his older heavier opponent punch for punch in the first round and looked the goods in the secnd.

However his opponent took advantage of his size and pushed forward on to Austin.

He couldn’t quite handle the sustained pressure and the referee stopped the bout late in the third round.

However, Austin’s perfor-

mance was very clinical and he did what the coach required.

Macen Algie was the third boxer to jump in for an exhibition bout which was entertaining in it’s own right.

Macen’s opponent was a very tall, rangy opponent which Macen wasn’t used to.

He is used to being the taller opponent and the hit out was very good experience for him.

Next up was Memphis Algie matched against a very strong opponent, a former state champion from Bundaberg.

Both boys were left handed and put a show on for the crowd, boxing very well. But Memphis had a higher work rate and took the win in a split-points decision.

Finally, the old stager Kial Engstrom jumped in for a rematch against another Masters boxer from Gladstone.

Kial was after some redemption after going down in their first encounter in Mackay. Hel started cautiously in the first and second rounds then applied the pressure in the third round. However, he didn’t do enough to get the points and the decision went the way of his opponent.

Next, the team will head up to Townsville on June 19 with Macen and Memphis Algie, Austin Armitage and Jessie King.

Run an outstanding success The BMA Mackay Marina Run 2021 was an outstanding success with near-record entrants across all events.

Former Olympians, Mackay’s Benita Willis and Gold Coast runner Michael Shelley were the awesome race ambassadors of the event.

Benita and Michael mingled with runners and supporters all weekend.

This started with a meet and greet at Moss on Wood on Friday night, race pack collection day on Saturday afternoon and running with entrants on Sunday at the major event.

The cool running conditions were excellent for personal best times with the toppling of race records, including for the 21km male winner Tim Vincent who smashed the race record by two minutes.
