Community left bewildered by spike in serious local crime POLICE have reported a spike in serious crimes throughout the Mackay region and residents are understandably concerned.

In one of the more serious cases, a 42-year-old woman has been jailed just this week for repeatedly headbutting and robbing a pregnant woman who was pushing her 15-month-old child along a footpath.

At the time of the assault, the

attacker was with her five-yearold daughter.

Melanie Renae Sciberras pleaded guilty to three charges including grievous bodily harm, stealing the victim’s iPhone and attempting to break into the car of a woman who was filming the assault on her phone.

Magistrate Bronwyn Hartigan told the Mackay Magistrates Court that Scriberras “had drug

issues and she must have been doing it (drugs)”. In passing sentence, Magistrate Hartigan told Scriberras that she “should be thoroughly and utterly ashamed of her behaviour.

“To stand alone, the behaviour is very, very serious, as it’s a very very serious assault, Magistrate Hartigan said.

A 23-YEAR-old Mackay woman has pleaded guilty to possessing drug utensils and less than one gram of cannabis. A police prosecutor told the Mackay Magistrates Court that police attended a house earlier this year to find Kelly Lorraine Saxby smoking cannabis in a bong.

The prosecutor said that Saxby told police that she was at home smoking cannabis with a friend.

She was smoking at home to relax and she had purchased cannabis earlier that day. Saxby told police that she was trying to stop smoking cannabis and has started to engage in support services.

Guilty plea

A 29-YEAR-old West Mackay man has pleaded guilty to possessing drug utensils following a search warrant. The police prosecutor said a used cannabis pipe (drug equipment) was found in his room on June 1, 2021. Magistrate Bronwyn Hartigan told Michael John Newton that she was giving him drug diversion as he only had one previous low level drug conviction earlier this year. Newton was placed on a good behaviour bond for one month with $150 to be forfeited if the bond is breached.

Assault

A 26-YEAR-old woman has been sentenced in the Mackay Magistrate’s Magistrates, as the result of a violent assault, to a one year imprisonment sentence with immediate parole.

Angela Michelle Winn pleaded guilty to occasionally bodily harm. Magistrate Bronwyn Hartigan said she took into account that everyone at a party was drinking. In passing judgement, Magistrate Hartigan said that “the facts are very serious”.

Brass pipe

A 53-YEAR-old woman has pleaded guilty to possessing a brass pipe on June 30, 2021.

Magistrate Bronwyn Hartigan said that Michelle Condon was otherwise of good character and are eligible for drug diversion session and one-month good behaviour bond and $150 to be forfeited if the bond is breached.

Labourer’s weapon, dope hit A 27-YEAR-old labourer was charged at a random breath test with possessing a weapon and cannabis in the Mackay Magistrates Court.

The Police prosecutor told the court that Aaron Christopher Penny was charged on May 15, 2021 with possession of the drug cannabis and a weapon or knife.

The prosecutor said police searched the vehicle and found a bag with cannabis and cannabis seeds in the boot and a foldaway knife in the centre console,

but he was not further charged when a number of other knives were found in the vehicle. The prosecutor said that Penny had drug problems, had been charged with similar offences in 2019 and there was a need to do something to break his drug cycle.

Magistrate Bronwyn Hartigan said the knife would be forfeited and handed down a six-month probation order, which she said “will help you with your rehabilitation, where you must agree to supervision and drug testing”.

A MACKAY Magistrate has asked if a 31-year-old Pine River electrician appearing before her on serious illegal drug offences was another one of a hundreds of drug offenders from this year’s Happy Daze Music Festival.

In sentencing Lewis Giles Flynn, Magistrate Bronwyn Hartigan said “you are one of perhaps 100 people who have been here” (to the Court).

“Police were conducting a roadside search of all vehicles going to the Happy Daze Festival,” the Magistrate explained.

Magistrate Bronwyn Hartigan also cast doubt on the future of the Whitsunday’s Happy Daze music festivals and another Happy Daze, held on the May 28, 29 and 30 long weekend.

“Its not going to happen again, no one is going.”

The Happy Daze website described its three-day musical as an amazing psychedelic wonderland, located by the O’Connell River, near Lethebrook, 104 km north of Mackay.

“The Festival is created to provide a place to nurture oneself, communicate ideas, find personal power, and increase wellbeing through a variety of multi concurrent holistic activities designed to expand the mind, awaken the spirit and heal the soul,” the promotional website explained.

“There is three days of free

camping, there will be no drugs, no ice…we understand that everyone parties differently however smoking ice lowers your vibration and we do not want it at our festivals.”

Lewis Giles Flynn pleaded guilty to a number of drug charges including possessing the illegal drugs LSD (popularly known as acid), MDMA (ecstasy), plus drug utensils, two grinders, a water pipe and brass pipe and cannabis.

The police prosecutor told the Mackay magistrate’s Court that Flynn was charged at its Bruce Highway roadside breathaliser testing point at Yalboroo, 70 kilometres north of Mackay at 3:15pm on May 28, where following admissions of cannibis, police searched his Toyota Landcruiser.

“Police found cannabis on the front seat, six separate sealed bags containing 1.5 grams, plus 13 grams of lose green leaf material cannabis, “ the prosecutor said “A drug detection dog did an initial search and found a sealed bag with caps of a crystal substance in bags containing MDMA, one lolly containing LSD, plus drug utensils.

“The defendant declared that drugs in the centre console were obtained acquired prior to and a few days from a dealer who supplied the cannabis.

“The trafficking charges comes from text messages found in Messenger on a phone allegedly belonging to her with her photograph on it, suggesting that it was in fact her messaging account. And there is a strong or at least an arguable case for trafficking.

“I consider that the offences that she is remanded in custody for in the watchhouse are extremely serious. She has no previous convictions for drugs.

“It is clear from material sub-

mitted to me that she has a drug problem in terms of rehabilitation she needs to go to a full time rehabilitation facility for about three months.

“She has breached bail before, but I do not find her an unacceptable risk of failing to reappear in court when required.

“The real issue is whether or not, she is an unacceptable risk of committing further offences and whether she should remain in custody for her own protection, that is protection from drugs and protection of committing related drug offences.”

“I note that she is innocent until proven guilty. Jowsey is an unacceptable risk of committing further offences and should be saved from herself.”

Woman refused bail on 20 charges A MACKAY Magistrate has remanded a woman in custody and refused bail for about 20 drug trafficking charges.

Emma Claire Jowsey appeared before Magistrate Bronwyn Hartigan, who told her court that Jowsey was facing a number of new charges, whilst on bail for the serious charge of trafficking between Oct 5, 2020 and October 29, 2020.

“That is coupled with a further seven charges on that day and a stand-alone drug-drive charge, plus three breaches of bail and then another three driving offences,” Magistrate Hartigan explained.

“The offences which she faces today whilst on bail for drug trafficking, is a further trafficking charge between April 9 and

June 26, a period of nearly three months in 2021.

“Jowsey is also facing a number of other charges arising out of an interception on the Bruce Highway on June 25, 2021.

“There are 12 charges on that occasion arising out of a search of her vehicle and her driving when she was not supposed to be.”

Magistrate Hartigan said the allegation that is most serious, is that she possessed around three grams of ecstasy (MDMA) and more importantly, 10 grams of methamphetamine.

“Both are said to be commercial quantities of these drug and I agree.

“Therefore, Jowsey is in a show cause position, which means that there is no presumption of bail in

her favour. Police do not have the burden of proving anything. Indeed, it is for Miss Jowsey to prove to me that she is not an unacceptable risk of failing to appear and not an unacceptable risk of committing further offences.

“It is also for her to prove to me that on the bounds of probability that she does not need to remain in custody for her own protection.

“Trafficking is the most serious drug offence that any (drug) defendant can face and she is facing that charge, while being on bail for a further trafficking charge

Call to list crimes from illegal drug use THE Palaszczuk Government has been called upon to list every crime where illegal drugs may have been involved.

The call has been made by Shadow Attorney-General and Shadow Minister for Justice Tim Nicholls.

The Minister said the issue was “very real” and there was no doubt that the vast majority of crimes in Queensland may be influenced by drugs.

“Its about causal factors and we need to know if increased illegal drug use, or some other reason is driving up and causing Queensland’s increasing crime rate,” Mr Nicholls said.

“Queensland courts and police only have statistics on drug convictions where they do a very good job, but it would be very useful if the prevalence of drugs in crimes is also

measured. Even if offenders are not charged with illegal drug offences, it would be good to know the effects of drugs on Queensland’s crime rate.

“For example, there are elevated levels of methamphetamine and other illegal drugs in Mackay and other North Queensland sewerage treatment plants’ water and these drugs are tremendously addictive.

“But we need to know what is it that we are measuring.

“This new statistic would help decision makers to protect and improve people’s safety and we need to know or understand more about the effects of illegal drugs on crime.

“The Crime and Corruption Commission has done some good analysis in this area.”

Abandoned vehicle explodes in flames Key issues Briefs

TWO explosions rocked the Carlyle Gardens neighbourhood in the small hours of Thursday morning, waking residents up in shock.

Fire crews were kept busy putting out a car fire in the front of the roundabout near Carlyle Gardens.

The fire took 10 minutes to put out, with residents describing the fire as being as high as their homes.

The abandoned White Mazda had no number plates and was engulfed in flames, with locals Phil and Kathy Taylor saying they were woken up by two loud bangs.

At first, Mrs Taylor said she thought nothing of the bangs, describing the sounds as being nothing unusual to hear at that time of night.

“I was sleeping and I heard the explosion, I got up and couldn’t see anything. I heard the next one and we came outside and we saw the car was on fire,” Mrs Taylor said. “That’s when we heard the fire brigade rush in.”

Mr Taylor said he was not impressed with the car fire and how close it was.

He said when he first heard the explosions, he thought somebody was trying to steal their car from the garage.

“We went outside after the second explosion and saw the fire. I thought the second explosion was the tyres exploding,” he said.

“The flames were going as high as the houses, you could see it between the fences.”

Another Carlyle Garden resident said she was not aware the Mazda was engulfed in fire.

“Stolen cars are often left there in the open lot near the round about. This happens quite often,” she said.

Another resident, Delma Willis, was shocked to learn about the nearby car fire on Thursday.

“I was asleep by then and didn’t hear anything,” Ms Willis said.

“I was sitting at home, watching a good show on TV until 11.30pm.”

Most residents along Stuart Hindle Drive were fnot impressed to learn of the car fire. They said they were frustrated that the open lot is being used to drop abandoned cars.

Jason Hixon said he was deep asleep when the abandoned Mazda was on fire.

However, he said the car had been left abandoned near the roundabout for a week, and said the car had a police aware sticker on it.

Love of music bonds family

IT WAS a love with music that inspired a father-son duo to join the Mackay and District Pipe Band.

Last week, the pipe band was busy practising for their anniversary at the Bluewater Quay.

MC Ian Dean said he has been a member of the band for 12 years. He initially joined as his then-teenaged son loved playing music.

Mr Dean told his son he used to play the bagpipes as a child, before he lost interest as a teenager.

“I learnt the pipes as a kid and then, in my teen years, gave them up, as I discovered alcohol and girls. Thirty years

later, I had a teenaged son who liked music,” Mr Dean said.

“I ran into somebody I knew. I got to know someone who’s a member of the pipe band and I said to him ‘I used to play the pipes’.

“He said, ‘you should come along and join the pipe band’ – I had to start again. Basically, relearn all of all the things I unlearned over the years of not touching the pipes.

“My son ended up joining the band as well, so we made it a family thing.”

He said there are a number of families present in the band, all who want to connect with their children.

“There’s two motivations for being in the band. One is the music, a lot of people start off joining for the music, but then they form friendships,” he said.

“We’ve got a mother and daughter over there, mother on the pipes and daughter out the front playing the tenor drum.

“We’ve got one family who has three members in the pipe band.

“It’s like a ready made social circle, you get to meet people from other places.”

Mr Dean said the Mackay and District Pipe Band sometimes visits other towns as well for competitions, while other bands visit Mackay.

SES tooled up with new ATV STATE EMERGENCY Service (SES) crews in Mackay have received a new Kawasaki Mule ATV to complement their existing fleet.

Mackay Regional Council Mayor Greg Williamson presented the SES unit with the $38,000 vehicle, which he said would help the region with emergency recovery and support.

The ATV is far smaller and faster than their existing four-wheel drives and can reach more areas, and it still has the power to tow boats.

“It’s absolutely imperative that, as a council, we can rely on the investment we made for SES locally,” Mayor Williamson said.

“We’re quite clear – we have … a under-

standing council supplies mules like this and sheds and vehicles – we also fund the SES controller.

“This is really quite an important occasion for us. We don’t often get a chance to come out to the SES and say how proud we as a council, of what you do in the region.

“From a council perspective, and as the chair of the local disaster management group, I know that we couldn’t what we do, in terms of emergency turn out in this region, without SES.” Mayor Williamson pointed out the importance of each SES member and the difference they make for the region.

“Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES), SES (and) Local Disaster Management (are) all working together to make sure that we get through whatever’s in front of us,” he said.

Local controller Alex McPhee said he was thankful for the investment Council had made, along with some of the other equipment they received.

“Part of the initial (state) funding (is) they put some extra funding out across the state this year, and will continue in future years,” Mr McPhee said. “As part of that, (we got) two smart tv’s tonight – one for Mirani SES and one for Sarina SES to use in their sheds.”

CHEQUE: Mackay Netball Association donates $1000 to Ronald McDonald House

Mackay Netball donates MACKAY Netball Association has made a generous donation of $1000 to Ronald McDonald House tyhis week.

Ronald McDonald House was chosen because the Association wanted to make a difference in the lives of sick children.

Chair Allison Bugeja said they held a silly hair and crazy sock day back in May to raise funds. Proceeds from the day’s efforts went to the charity.

She explained the day was an event where “everyone was willing to put their hand in their pockets, (knowing) that they had just a gold coin donation”.

Allison said it felt good to donate the funds to the charity.

“The funds go to whichever charity that we go for each year.

This year, we went for the Ronald McDonald House,” Mrs Bugeja said.

“I think it’s always good to give back to whatever charity you can. Every year, we try to (make it) go towards a good cause.

“We held it over the Junior Competition on the Saturday, the Premier League Competition on the Tuesday and the Senior Competition on the Wednesday.”

Mrs Bugeja said the little kids

loved it and “it’s a highlight of their (day) – they go crazy”.

However, all of their players were happy to get on board and had an absolute blast, looking their brightest and craziest.

“The seniors get into it as much as the seven-year-olds do,” she said.

“They were all happy to do it. Some teams wore mad special socks. You could tell people went into an effort to look like a unified team.

“We have team prizes and my team all wore rainbow socks, they just go all in. They really enjoyed it. They wanted to support it,” she said.

Ambos warn drivers to take care QUEENSLAND Ambulance Service has advised motorists to take extra care during the school holidays Advanced Care Paramedic Jen Kensela said this was especially important on wet roads.

“Even though it’s dreary when people set off, just be mindful to take extra time and care,” she said.

“We have had a lot of recent fatal crashes on the highways unfortunately, and we’d really like every to arrive at their destination safely by driving carefully, especially during the school holidays.

“Unfortunately, we’ve nearly had 130 people die on our roads and none of them would have known they were driving for the last time.”

Jen urged drivers to be prepared for long distance driving, advising them by “packing their

medication, having their first aid kit and carry other essentials like food and water”.

“Also, it’s really important they know their general location at all times. That can be done by recognising the last town or landmark they passed,” she said.

“It can also be done by downloading the emergency plus app and that can be used for assistance, particularly in remote areas.

“The Emergency Plus app is something people can easily download on their mobile phones, and when you access the app, it gives you your latitude and longitude or street names of wherever you are, when you need emergency assistance.”

Motorists exploring regional Queensland were advised to have the Check In Queensland app and to sign in wherever they travel.

SHOPPERS hoping for a new supermarket to arrive in Mackay could be waiting a while.

An Aldi spokeswoman told The Mackay Local News there were no plans to open any stores in North Queensland in the near future.

“We will always consider the feasibility of new locations, however at this stage, Aldi has no plans to open stores in North Queensland,” the spokesman said.

Mackay Regional Council Mayor Greg Williamson revealed to media last week Council had spoken to Aldi twice in the past six months and a property acquisition manager visited the region for discussions.

Mayor Williamson said the main problem Aldi had was they did not have a distribution centre.

He said the supermarket chain planned to open in Mackay, Townsville and Cairns once a distribution centre was set up.

However, he said he was uncertain of where this centre would be located.

Mackay Region Chamber of Commerce secretary Cathy Sullivan said consumers would benefit greatly if Aldi came to the region.

“We see Aldi coming to Mackay as a positive for our region, as it will create healthy supermarket competition, which may assist in driving prices down at the other chain stores,” she said.

ALDI: Not coming anytime soon “It will also provide additional jobs, with the flow on effects benefiting the local economy.”

Mackay Local News asked a number of shoppers what they thought about the possiblity of Aldi coming to Mackay.

Shoppers said they were excited about the low prices and Aldi’s famous discounts Mackay shopper Bart Methurst said what he loved about the idea of an Aldi store in Mackay was the competition it would create for Coles and Woolworths.

“I think it’s a great idea, honestly, because it’s going to be lot cheaper than Coles and Woolies,

which is taking over at the moment,” Mr Methurst said.

“I wouldn’t know at the moment (about prices), but I know it’s a lot cheaper than (what) Coles is.”

Jeanine Roff believes she would save a significant amount of money if Aldi were to come to Mackay.

“I’ve never really been to an Aldi (store), so I don’t know but I will be excited to see (their low prices),” Mrs Roff said.“It’ll be great, I reckon. Just something different for Mackay.”

WHAT a week it has been so far!

From the clear and crisp winter mornings to the arrival of the full moon, this was a perfect recipe to get out and about and just sit with a soda water iced long black as cold, bitter and dark as my heart and (drum roll please) people watch - just to see what the universe had dragged in.

Whilst I was enjoying the array of warm tones and fabulous jeans with rips that didn’t look like they were keeping anything warm, I was struck with a deep thought.

Like anything that pertains to our identity, is there such thing as the “appropriation of fashion”? It just seems somewhat oxymoronic to have something that we use to express ourselves with such individuality that is born from pure inspiration, almost instantly categorise us with such strict metaphorical guidelines and expectation.

Upon this arose the million-dollar question “What determines our style to be too young or too old?”.

They say you’re only as old as you feel, right?

Does the same concept apply to dressing the age that we feel? Conventionally our dress code evolves into something rather more conservative as we age which would denote a sense of maturity and wisdom.

However, I feel there must be some synchronicity between our psychical appearance, personality and the clothes we choose to put on our back.

I can assure you I’ve rubbed shoulders with a plethora of demographics and quite the colourful arrangement of personalities, but this thought really prompted me to delve into things.

Upon reflection of the night (fighting the crippling effects of a mix of Aperol Spritz and too many vinos) I had come to conclusion that I was surrounded by Grandmothers and Grandmothers-to-be that presented better than some my age and radiated youth as if they were the fountains themselves, proving that age and style in fact have no limit.

Nevertheless, contrary to the fact that fashion is very much a form of art and/or expression which reflects who we are on the inside, alas even in contemporary times we need take conventional measures to be taken seriously – or do we? For now, in the words of Miranda Priestly….that’s all.

Put them in your car or your hand bag or your pocket. Take them to the supermarket and eliminate the need to buy and continue to use single use plastic bags.

For a long time we had a great selection of reusable bags but it was a challenge to remember them.

They would invariably be at home when we unexpectedly shopped.

Now, we leave our reusable bags near the front door after we have unpacked the groceries. We then take them to the car the next time we are heading out.

The car is their permanent home so we always have them handy.

The other way to remember reusable bags is having a fold up bag or two in your handbag. They are super light and take up very little room so you will almost always be prepared.

Reusable bags are a brilliant option. Your business or product will be promoted, and you will be helping to minimise the role of single use plastics in our communities.

The aim is to raise awareness of the amount of plastic in our lives and to make choices to reduce our consumption. We have no religious freedom George

TRUE religious liberty does not exist in Australia.

Sure, we can go to church and read the Bible but try espousing some of the more difficult faith-based views and see where it gets you.

In rugby player Israel Folau’s case, it got him fired and suspended from the game he loved.

In Catholic Archbishop Julian Porteous’ case it got him a referral to an anti-discrimination tribunal.

In Dr Jareth Kok’s case it has likely cost him his medical career.

Don’t believe me? Just do a Google search on their names and read their stories.

The sad truth is we are not truly free to express our faith in Australia.

The problem has come about mainly due to State laws that seek to put sexual identity and other such considerations above and beyond freedom of faith.

It has also come about due to woke corporations and institutions waging ideological war on anyone who dares challenge the progressive zeitgeist, even if the challenge emanates from their faith.

To deal with this situation, the Morrison Liberal National government promised at the last election to enshrine religious liberty into law.

To date, this has not been done.

Worse still, draft laws that were mooted

last year are woefully inadequate, giving huge concessions to the gripes of left-wing activists and their friends in the media instead of truly protecting people of faith.

To truly live up to commitments that the government gave to Christians and people of faith, the government must pass its proposed Religious Discrimination Bill with appropriate amendments that ensure that “religious activity” is broadly interpreted and that religious charities are able to act in accordance with their beliefs regardless of their involvement in commercial activities.

The bill must also ensure that corporations don’t get away with sacking workers for espousing their faith because they may suffer “unjustified financial hardship” and that there isn’t wriggle room for ongoing attacks on freedom of faith with such subjective exemptions for speech or actions that someone can deem as “vilification”, “harassment” or as “unreasonable”.

That way religious liberty may be restored in Australia.

ABORIGINAL ART: NAIDOC Week reminds us to care for the land0

THIS Sunday will be the first day of NAIDOC Week, a time for national celebrations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.

NAIDOC has its roots in a protest march through Sydney’s streets by Aboriginal people on 26 January 1938.

Since then, January 26 has been a contentious day in Australia. Each year more and more Australians recognise that it is inappropriate to celebrate the birth of the modern nation on a day that marks the beginning of the decimation of the culture of the first peoples of this land.

NAIDOC week is not contentious at all. It is a time when we can all celebrate the world’s oldest living cultures, those of the many peoples who lived on this continent since time immemorial.

Each year NAIDOC adopts a theme. This year it is Heal Country. There is much to heal in this country.

The land that we live on has suffered badly since the coming of the first European colonisers in 1788.

Within a few years of their arrival, the stream from which the colonisers drew water, the famous Tank

“She told you that she was pregnant, 12 weeks pregnant and that did not deter you.

“You snatched her phone and headbutted her twice in the face.

“The pregnant woman suffered minor injuries and there was swealing to her forehead, confirmed in medical reports.

“Then the pregnant woman collapsed on the ground.

“That could have had catastrophic consequences for that poor woman who was a stranger to you.

“But it’s in your favour that you did make made full admissions in a record of interview.”

Magistrate Hartigan added that the next charge relates to another incident moments later.

“Somebody, an innocent bystander, actually caught on film what was going on and followed you so that they could tell the police and you would not be lost sight of,” the Magistrate explained. “When you discovered this, you walked up to her car door and you said that you would bash her.

“She locked her vehicle door.

“You then grabbed the passenger door, trying to get in and you did not let go when she drove off.

“You said things to her like you c..., I’m going to bash you.

However despite the seriousness of the

assault, Magistrate Hartigan sought to rehabilitate the assailant and asked via a prison video link if the prisoner had reflected on her behaviour over the past three months.

Scriberras replied that: “I have, Your Honour, my behaviour was just terrible.”

Magistrate Hartigan responded: “I’m glad that you realise that because that’s something that will help you to rehabilitate yourself.

“It’s good that you know that was really the wrong thing to do.

“There is something not quite right and it’s good that your dealing with and being treated for that in your rehabilitation.

“You have been in jail for three months.

“I do think its preferable for you to be in the community and to be on a long parole.”

“So, I’m going to sentence you for assault occasionally bodily harm to 12-months imprisonment. For the stealing, you are sentenced to three months imprisonment and for attempted entry for the vehicle, three months imprisonment. I set your parole of today to be released and I declare that you have spent 85 days in custody, as time served for the sentence,” Magistrate Bronwyn Hartigan concluded.

There is a big difference between people belonging to country and country belonging to people. In the British system, the country initially belongs to the government. In the cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, people belong to and are part of the land. The land embodies the stories of The Dreaming, the tales of ancestral human-animal beings who formed the landscape and continue to live in it. Those beings are reborn in living form with each human birth.

When country is a fundamental part of your existence, you can’t do things that damage country without damaging yourself.

You must care for and respect country. That is the unchanging law.Like the Tank Stream, European Australians have disrespected country right across this continent but it is not too late for us to take on board the NAIDOC theme and begin the process of healing and celebrating country. If we don’t, we will continue to harm ourselves.

IF I can only do one or the other – laugh or cry – I’ll laugh, but it’s a shame I have to laugh so enthusiastically about the ridiculous things politicians and some bureaucrats say.

Annastacia The Omnipotent leads the charge here. How can we forget the COVID vaccine pantomime involving an “accidental” dog bite, a trip to Japan, and keeping Queenslanders safe? That’s award-winning stuff but how’s this for an absolute cracker.

Recently it was revealed that 32 per cent of diabetes patients in 27 Queensland hospitals had been given incorrect treatment. High rates of dangerous medication errors and hospital-acquired harm in diabetes patients had been exposed in an internal probe.

Health Minister D’Ath Vader went missing in action but a Queensland Health “spokesman” came out with “The survey results will enable us to continue providing excellent services.”

No, you didn’t misread that. Apparently high rates of dangerous medication errors and hospital-acquired harm, and 32 per cent of patients getting incorrect treatment, is now regarded by QH as “excellent service.”

But for an educated response from a bureaucrat, look no further than the Education Department. Kids at the Valkyrie State School have no permanent drinking water QBuild ships it in, and has been doing so for some time, and a local mining company has been donating water so the kids have something to drink.

The official response? Education Minister GraceX2 went missing but a department “spokeswoman” produced a gem.

“The department is working on maximising rainwater capture at Valkyrie State School. Three new tanks will be installed at the school during Term Three. The new tanks will be connected to an ultraviolet light filtration system prior to use.”

I only wish she had the wit to add, “If Ingham can have a pub with no beer, Valkyrie can have a school with no water. It will put them on the map. Songs will be written about the ultraviolet light filtration system. Lucky little bastards.”

Environment Minister Enoch Is Enough would be upset if she didn’t make this incomplete list of absurdities, as would local MP Nick Dametto, in relation to the stories about crocodiles in backyards in the Tully Heads district.

They have been there for more than two years, scaring the locals witless and whipping the authorities into coma-like action.

Remember, these crocs are in a residential area. The Minister’s response? A two-page letter about protecting humans and crocodiles in the wild.

But wait, Dametto put on his Cape Crusader suit and summoned up

Let’s finish on a high with yet more from ATO. When she announced Dr Jeannette Young as our next Governor she said Saint Jeannette would be “the people’s Governor”. What? As opposed to the animals’ Governor, or the birds’ Governor?

And her decision to promote a public servant as Governor was a “no-brainer”. Using the words public servant and no-brainer in the same sentence is the most accurate comment the Premier has made in years.

Of course I’m not referring to all public servants here — just the BLOOPs (Bureaucrats Living On Other Planets) who finish up in high-paid advisor roles.

HELPING: Mercy Colege students making a difference

Serving breakfast and a chat SERVING up a hot breakfast and a chat, the Brekky Van has, over the years, provided comfort to countless people in Mackay.

Mercy College Justice Coordinator Cecelia McLoughlin said the service started towards the end of 2020, with the idea three years in the making.

Ms McLoughlin said two year-10 students run the van and cook the food, at the same time, learning many different skills.

The service has teamed up with Orange Sky to wash Mackay’s disadvantaged and homeless, where they are located at the front of St Vincent De Paul at South Mackay Every Wednesday and Friday.

The Brekky Van helps Mackay’s homeless and disadvantaged by offering them breakfast and a chat.

“Research shows students who involve themselves in service learning … at a young age and do that later in their lives,” Ms McLoughlin said.

Service-learning is an educational approach that combines learning objectives with community service in order to provide a practical and progressive learning experience while meeting

societal needs. She said the main outcome was to help create “a better world”.

“It comes back to our school values: it comes back to hope, compassion, and justice. Restoring dignity to everyone in the community, who might be without a home or enough money to feed their family themselves,” she said.

“Not judging by how they look or what car they are driving or what they might be doing, it’s just about providing them a hot meal, at the end of the day, but also a conversation.

“Quite often people get shunned in the community. They might be homeless, might not be wearing shoes, might have tattoos.

“It’s about giving them the conversation that other people avoid with them in the community.”

Ms McLoughin said one man has been coming to Orange Sky for three years to get his clothes washed.

“He usually comes in, got no shoes on and is often carrying a teddy bear. He has actually be known to Orange Sky for three years now,” she said. “He’ll have a little bit of a chat now. It’s little things like that we feel are making the difference.”

Dance baton twirlers all smiles INTERNATIONAL Dance Affair Baton Twirlers were all smiles after a very successful competition and twirling camp in Yeppoon recently.

Two guest Twirl coaches travelled from New South Wales to facilitate the workshops in dance, strut and baton work.

Cracker of a case ends in fireworks

A MACKAY man has pleaded guilty to possessing fireworks at a party at the corner of Bakasisia Dump Road and Hennesy Street in February this year.

A police prosecutor told the Mackay Magistrates Court that fireworks placed in a cross pattern on the road bay on the edge of a grass field, ready to be ignited.

The Court was told that police found furniture removalist Phillip Nicholas Pryce’s fingerprints on a one-time fusion single shot, one-time fusion 25-shot, one-time fusion 20-shot, a one-time fusion good times 9-short and one hellfire, eight-shot launcher.

Magistrate Bronwyn Hartigan accepted that Pryce, 24, had left a party before the

fireworks were ignited. She asked if the fireworks were out of town as with the potential for any danger, “it looks like it’s pretty was low as there is a big difference between this and in your back yard”.

Magistrate Hartigan said that by refence to the police photograph, it didn’t look like a populated area where these fireworks were ultimately set off Defence Council said that the fireworks were set near the dump and a swamp-type area.

Magistrate Hartigan placed Pryce on a good behaviour bond with $300 attached to it for three months, which is paid if the bond is breached.

International Dance Affair Twirlers are now training for Twirltastic, a Baton Twirling competition hosted by International Dance Affair. This is to be held at North Mackay State High School Hall on Saturday July 31 and the Twirl Queensland State Championship to be held at Caloundra Stadium on 25tand 26 September.

Local businesses suffer break-ins WHILE the team at Bullet Bikes cleaned up their Gordon Street business after it was ramraided by thieves this week, Mackay Police are hunting for those responsible.

The popular, locally owned and operated motorcycle business was broken into on Tuesday night, about 11.10pm, when a white Nissan Navara was driven through the glass entrance doors, facing Gordon Street.

A police spokesperson said police had made a public appeal for information about the incident.

The owner of the business declined to comment, however the owners and employees of neighbouring businesses, in the Milton-Gordon-Peel street areas, told Mackay Local News this was just the latest in a list of similar attacks on their business properties in the “past

couple of years”.

Elders Insurance Mackay sales support and claim officer Josh Smith said although the business he worked for had not been broken into, he had handled the insurance claims for businesses which had been.

“A lot of our clients (in this area) have had break ins,” Mr Smith said.

“Coming from an insurance perspective, it looks like lot of them are planned, it’s not just random acts – and it’s not kids doing it for fun.

“It’s definitely targeted.”

Corry’s Cycles co-owner Ryan Corry said his business, located right on the corner of Milton and Gordon streets, diagonally opposite the Showgrounds, had been broken into “a few times”.

“Yeah, we’ve had a couple of break-

ins here, at this current location, which right in town,” Mr Corry said.

“There’s been a couple of different ones: they smashed a side window and crawled in; and then there was another time when they smashed the door.”

“I think it is just about convenience – they grabbed the closest bike to the door and made their way out.”

Like most of his neighbouring business operators, the reasons behind these break and enters remained a mystery, however, he said there needed to be tougher punishment for offenders.

Aussie Home Loans Mackay office manager Kay Direen said that although her office had not been targeted directly, she felt for her neighbours who had been and wondered if the offenders were people who were doing it tough,seeking out cash and items they could easily sell.

Life most fabulous WHEN opportunity knocks…

Some answer and some just miss their cue.

Take COVID-19, for instance.

Blimey, if ever there was a chance for people to either pivot and make the most of a situation or wallow in their own pit of despair and self-depreciation, then last year (and, let’s face it, this year as well) has been the make or break.

Through conversation and via the fabulousness (and not-so-fabulousness) of social media, I have seen some shining, and rather dim examples of both.

On the one hand there are those who have cried foul, lamented their lot and thrown for themselves a pity party of epic (and pathetic) proportions.

And then, there are the awesome people who I have watched take this god-awful situation and make it work for them.

They are totally owning their lot in life and kicking massive goals.

Are they where they thought they’d be? No way! Never in a million years did anyone think this would go down the crazy path it has.

But far out! How cool that people have jumped off the ‘poor me’ band wagon and made some really cool moves into the ‘entrepreneurial’ space!

I have a friend in small events business who finished a children’s book she had been working on, another friend who was in the aviation industry who started working for herself as a consultant selling products she really believes in, another friend has taken their whole business online, and another took the time to research, hone the marketing and shore up clien-

But if there was something I absolutely loved about the business mettle which came from pandemic pandemonium, it was seeing how small local businesses rose to the occasion and did everything they could to keep their staff, service their customers and do all of this without the expectation or concern about handouts.

Jobseeker, Jobkeeper, you name it, and it was up for grabs – and for some this was a genuine lifesaver. No issue there.

But there was something more than a little bit tear jerking about those which battened down and did what they do best for those that matter most – their staff and their customers.

It made those who used COVID as a flippant excuse for a poor sense of business judgement look even more pathetic than they might have in isolation.

To those who have gone the hard yards, who

have thought outside of the proverbial square and done something they might not have otherwise to make “it” work through COVID-19 – good on you! You’re a legend of epic style and fabulousness and we salute you!

To those who have done it tough and, through no fault of their own, have found the going tough and even insurmountable at times, we say, Hang in there! You’ve got this, we’ve got you and you are the genuine reason there is a need for things like grants, government payments and offerings to tide you over. You will make it through.

To the rest of you, who think it’s okay just to lament your lot and whinge for the sake of it; who think you’re ‘entitled to a handout just because you’re you’, we have an equally clear and heart felt message: Wake the bloody hell up to yourself! You know you can do better, you know you have a choice. So get up, play the hand you’ve been dealt and stop your whinging. You’re wasting your time and the tax payer’s money with every moment you decide to invest in little more than lament and woe.

This year we decided to help the Mackay Hospital Foundation raise more funds for the new Ronald McDonald Family Room coming to the Mackay Base Hospital in October.

We thought with so many families with sick kids who travel to Townsville regularly to get treatment, wouldn’t it be great to travel the same distance here by walking and fundraising at the same time. The idea was born!

I would walk 400km around the streets of Mackay and the Whitsundays and for each kilometre we would raise money. Well over 35 days I walked 426km on footpaths, hockey fields, visited the facilities at the Base and with challenges along the way we raised $10,620! Not bad for these two little scrawny legs hey!

I was asked to dress up and walk like Kel from Kath and Kim, I had to walk all morning in hospital scrubs, and I even wore a pink suit while bouncing a pink basketball around the Mackay City Centre.

Everytime I walked I thought of those people I love and how the money can help them. Families with sick kids like Kacey and her family in Walkerston, my Mum who was treated so much over the years and those about to head into their own battles this year.

Rob’s Rescue is more than a name, it’s a feeling I have to help you and your family. Let me know how and we’ll help. The Mackay Local News are here with us too.

Firebrace for NAIDOC CELEBRATIONS for the Mackay District NAIDOC week will kick off 10am Monday with a flag raising ceremony at Mackay Regional Council.

The celebrations are returning to the popular month of July, after the 2020 postponement to November due to impacts and uncertainty following COVID-19.

The Mackay NAIDOC committee are thrilled to welcome the most streamed First Nations pop artist in the world, Isaiah Firebrace (pictured above) to the week of events. He will be performing on Saturday 10 July at 7.30pm.

Well known for his win on The X-Factor in 2016, Firebrace’s appearance on Network 10’s 2020 season of The Masked Singer left Australia guessing who was behind the mask, with only Jackie O correctly guessing his identity.

Firebrace’s Eurovision Song Contest 2017 song ‘Don’t Come Easy’, has surpassed 14 million streams on Spotify. His recent release, ‘Blame on Me’ is gaining momentum on streaming services and is set to be another chart topper.

Behind this glamour and fame, however, is a story of hardship fans respect and admire. Growing up on the banks of the Murray River, Firebrace went without essentials during his youth, to ensure the family could afford his weekend vocal lessons.

Firebrace’s dedication to his art has paid off and is now a signed artist with Sony Music Australia. “I’m just this guy from a little country town but if I can keep doing what I love to do and bring music to the world then I know I’m on the right path,” he said.

RIGHTO, if you do not own a Georgia Knoll-designed Crossroad Arts T-shirt by now then you are boring.

But I want to talk about my favourite part of the year. Being the heathen I am, I do not do churches as I might burst into flames, so religion is out.

But I do love July when Mackay turns it on with a festival that the rest of the country notices!

In these crazy rona times, it is magnificent to see that The Mackay Festival of Arts is a total vibe! I had the privilege to perform in the first festival 30 something years ago and as my parentals were at the Porters VIP balcony truly living, my mates and I were doing roving spot performances and funny skit shows in the grounds and singing with choirs.

Well, the festival is back and the run down is rad. You all know about Heading North, that performance workshop of a new musical I have been banging on about. Yeah, yeah, I know. But soz not soz.

I have also filled you in on Five Women Wearing the Same Dress, Kucom’s hilarious romp that is a Fringe event, so please get tickets. The company owns its own theatre, and the cosy and comfortable setting is simply darling.

Add to that, excellent lights, sound and staging. There’s cheap booze to enjoy while you laugh your pants off to some great local performers in a funny and relevant play. The five women in the show are all great comic actors lead by a strong female director.

NOLLSIE: Bringing some muscle to Mackay

Oh, and do not forget there is a hot bloke playing ‘the bloke’ in his debut stage performance. High five to new talent and a play featuring a majority female cast.

Shut up and grab a VB. Shannon Noll will be flying into Mackay this July…or maybe he is hitching a ride in the back of a Kingswood with some barmaids from Magnums.

Anyways, he is in town, and you can catch Nollsie live on stage at the Wine and Food Day, or if you prefer a more formal affair, and wanna ditch your rug and plastic cup, you can see him live at The Festival Club.

The after party is offering an array of tasty brews and an assortment of satisfying feeds.

Shannon Noll, one of Australia’s most recognisable household names is bringing his signature catchy, high-energy, country rock belting vocals.

Add to that, Silky Fuzz - five musicians who collide to form a blues/reggae/rock band.

The boys showcase an electric experience for young and old as age does not discriminate, if you are keen to flog the dance floor.

Up next is a band I do not shut up about, The Base Coats who are an awesome fourpiece funk/soul/rock band who always bring something unique to the table individually, but together create an easy flow of fresh original tunes.

Why not Swing into the Friends of the MECC Jazz Brunch for an indulgent brunch affair with one of Australia’s dashing leading men, the always fabulous, Dale Pengelly. I do not think any other theatre in Oz has such an amazing group of people like Friends of the MECC. Volunteers who are giving back to their community is pure heaven. This year, they have picked a top bloke, to lead the brunch.

They say that when romance collides with cabaret and swing attempts to seduce you once again, you know you have found The Lounge Suite and the captain out in front is Pengelly, supported of course by his Loungin’ Ladies.

A high-energy celebration of song and dance, The Lounge Suite beckons you to peek behind and through its curtains. Swoon and sway to timeless tunes from The Rat Pack and Nat King Cole alongside classics from musical theatre favourites Singin’ in the Rain, The Boy from Oz, and Chicago.

I will never forget seeing Dale in Hot Shoe Shuffle in the Sydney season. Oh, and if anyone saw Saturday Night Fever the musical, you will remember Pengelly’s hilarious disco duck dance class.

Make your career change with right info HAPPY New Financial Year!

Mackay career-changers heading into Real Estate in the new Financial Year, then you need to know about some changes to the way things are done!

Following an independent review of the national property services training package, the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has approved new training requirements for people wanting to enter the real estate industry.

As of October 2021, only the new training package will be accepted by the OFT as the eligibility requirement for a licence or registration. These new training requirements do not affect people who hold current registrations and licenses.

There will be a transition period in 2021, where the OFT will continue to accept qualifications from the existing training package until 30 September 2021.

The REIQ is offering additional student support sessions and will be providing the necessary training assistance

that students can access to complete their studies prior to the deadline.

WHAT IS CHANGING? From late April 2021, the REIQ will be offering students the new training package, which includes registration, full licence and licence upgrade. Currently, the full licence course consists of 19 units of competency and this hasn’t changed under the new training package.

However, the registration course has changed and will be increasing from 7 units of competency to 12 and the licence upgrade course will be reduced from 12 units of competency to 7. Although the total number of units in the package remains the same, the volume of work within the units has increased. These changes aim to result in better education for agents and ultimately, better outcomes for the consumer.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR NEW, CURRENT AND EXISTING STUDENTS? The REIQ will stop offering the existing Registration course, Licence upgrade and Full Licence training in mid-April 2021, to provide students with enough time to complete the volume of work.

New students can continue to enrol until this time but all course work must be submitted by 1 August 2021 to allow sufficient time for marking, potential re-submission and certificates and qualifications to be issued before the OFT cut-off of 30 September.

Students currently enrolled in the existing training package will also have to complete their studies by 1 August 2021.

HOW DOES THIS AFFECT YOUR APPLICATION TO THE OFT? Any student who has completed a course and has received a statement of

attainment in the current training package will have until 30 September 2021 to apply for their qualification with the OFT. This applies to new students in 2021 as well as those who studied between now and 2009 and may have never applied with the OFT. The current training package remains valid until the cut-off date and if this deadline is not met, completion of the new course/s will be required to obtain a licence or registration.

INSURANCE Do I Need Professional Indemnity Insurance?

First things first, what is Professional Indemnity? Unlike Public Liability, Professional Indemnity doesn’t require any injury or damage to have occurred. The ‘triggers’ for this cover are the financial impacts of mistakes (termed errors or omissions) made by when you when providing advice or services.

Now, who needs it? The long and short is any business that provides a fee for service (i.e accountants, solicitors, engineers, etc.) should have these covers. In fact, a lot of the professional organisations that these occupations operate under, and in some cases are governed by, require that you hold professional indemnity insurance.

Other instances where are may require cover are when you enter a contact for service. We’ve seen this requirement in several contracts for service, but they mostly appear with contract for mines, councils or government departments.

In this instance it is important to consult with your insurance broker or provider and ascertain if the scope of the contract or services being provided extends to a professional indemnity exposure.

If you determined that you don’t need it, it is important that you negotiate the removal of this clause from the contract.

Several contracts that we’ve reviewed for our client’s contain clauses that state if you don’t take out the cover then the party your contracting to have the right to take out cover on your behalf and pass this cost onto you.

AIR CONDITIONING The installation of a ducted system is a long-term investment in air conditioning your home.

A survey of how you use your air conditioning/live in your home is necessary to ensure the right system and design of operation is selected and installed by your qualified, licensed air conditioning contractor.

Mortgage regulations to remain stable DATA released by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) suggests changes to mortgage lending rules in the near future are unlikely, despite rapidly rising home values.

Indicators of lending standards are being watched carefully. Borrowing for the purchase of residential property hit a record $28.8 billion in January 2021, up 34.8 percent from the decade average. This has also contributed to housing values reaching a new record high.

So far however, the December 2020 quarter has not shown any major deterioration in lending standards, suggesting there is no need for interventions in the form of tighter credit

policies. The December 2020 quarter is of particular importance, because it marks a positive turn in Sydney and Melbourne dwelling values coming out of COVID-related restrictions. Select metrics from the publication are discussed below.

The share of interest only loans as a portion of new home loans ticked up to 19.2 percent The portion of new mortgages lent on interest only terms hit 19.2 percent in the December 2020 quarter, up from 18.5 percent in the previous quarter.

Time to watch your pool for safety issues

COOLER months make for a perfect time to make sure everything is in order with your pool and ensure everything is as it should be and in line with legislation!

Hotter, longer summers mean more people spending more time in swimming pools but that situation comes with deadly risks if pool safety barriers are not compliant.

The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) has launched a safety campaign to educate property owners, pool safety inspectors, property managers, landlords and tenants about their pool safety responsibilities.

The Queensland Family and Child Commission’s 2018-19 Annual Report

shows that eight children and young people (aged 0 to 17 years) drowned in Queensland swimming pools in the 20182019 financial year.

In 2019-2020, Queensland Health reported a total of 83 ‘immersion incidents’ involving young children in private swimming pools around the State. These are incidents where a child has required medical attention because of immersion in a pool.

QBCC Commissioner, Brett Bassett, said it was a sad fact that every summer brought with it tragic news for some families.

“Drowning is silent, and supervision is key for protecting children in and around pools,” Mr Bassett said.

“History shows that when attention lapses, a compliant barrier can be the last line of defence, so greater awareness of pool safety requirements is one way to help reduce these devastating incidents.”

The Queensland Coroners Court recently released its findings into a 2016 tragedy where two young children drowned in a residential swimming pool which subsequently failed a building inspection in 12 areas.

Mr Bassett urged property owners to use the QBCC website’s Compliance Checklist, which quickly and easily checks if a pool meets the required safety standards.

“If you are unsure about any aspects of compliance, contact a licensed pool safety

inspector or building certifier for specific advice about your property,” Mr Bassett said. “Pool barrier compliance rests with the pool owner but everyone has a personal responsibility when it comes to pool safety.”

Owners of non-compliant pools could receive an on-the-spot fine of $934.15, or a court-imposed penalty of up to $22,019.25 Property owners and tenants have also been reminded that temporary pools, such as those sold at hardware and department stores, must also comply with pool safety barrier laws.

Pool safety laws apply to pools and spas which can be filled with water to a depth of 300mm.

Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) Chief Executive Officer, Jennifer Smith, reminded Queenslanders of the need to play it safe in and around the pool this summer.

“A property rented with a swimming pool brings with it many responsibilities, so it’s important that property owners, property managers and tenants understand their obligations and work together to ensure their pool and surrounding areas are safe, compliant and maintained,” Ms Smith said.

“For tenants, setting up a small temporary pool on the property may be tempting as the days warm up, but pool safety, compliance and approvals – including from the property owner –must always remain top of mind.”

I do tend to always think of consequences of silly behaviour - and not just when I am racing so I try to keep safety in the back of my mind every time I drive.

That’s not only when I drive my own car on the road but also when I am on the track, as things can go wrong quickly.

JC: What would you say to other women looking to get behind the wheel competitively?

AD: I would say just give it a go. Don’t be intimidated by it being a largely male dominated field or the fact that there will always be a small element of negativity.

It doesn’t matter what car you have or how powerful it is. The more you ask questions and practice, the better and more consistent you will get.

I wouldn’t be racing today if I didn’t continue to overcome and push through a number of both positive and negative experiences I’ve had over the years. I race for my enjoyment, not for anyone else.

CANE: THe beginning of this month is an important time for the industry

THE start of July is an important time for sugarcane growers who use electricity to irrigate and CANEGROWERS is able to help with the important task of selecting the right Ergon tariff for your farm business.

Over the past decade, sugarcane growers have seen electricity costs rise more than 130%, threatening farm productivity and industry competitiveness.

At the same time, Ergon, Energex and Powerlink have been earning record profits and contributing

around a billion dollars a year to the Queensland Government.

CANEGROWERS believes electricity prices for irrigation should be capped at 16c/kWh (being 8c/ kWh for the network and 8c/kWh for the electrons) including the associated retail charges.

I am pleased to report that progress is being made!

Following representations from CANEGROWERS and the collaboration of CANEGROWERS members during a trial, a control load tariff for irrigators is now available as a standard tariff. Supplies under this tariff may experience the occasional interruption but it offers significant cost benefits.

It’s called T34 and is one of the tariffs confirmed in the 2021-2022 pricing options from Ergon.

From 1 July, T34 along with a suite of new small

business tariffs (T20, T22A, T24, T24A or T24B) will be available. Depending on when you irrigate and how much electricity is used to pump water to your cane crop, you may be able to secure cost savings too by switching to one of these new tariffs.

If you irrigate, it is definitely worth looking closely at the options. Reading the fine print of your tariff may be complicated but it is important.

CANEGROWERS members can find some detailed analysis of the tariffs on offer on the Member Resources page of the CANEGROWERS website.

There’s a selection tool which, if you put your own pump and electricity usage information in, will give you an indication of the tariff which may be best option for you. Your local CANEGROWERS office is there to help you as well.

It is especially important to consider your tariff

selection because a number of farm tariffs which irrigators have traditionally used ceased to be available on 30 June. While the State Government is offering an automatic rebate to minimise bill shock growers on the traditional tariffs may face in moving to one of the new small business tariffs, not everyone will be eligible.

Tackling electricity sector reform is complicated.

At every opportunity, CANEGROWERS is making submissions, appearing at hearings and putting forward the case for change.

Research for agriculture GREATER Whitsunday Alliance (GW3) will lead research to identify key agricultural products for export from the Mackay Issac Whitsunday region through project funding from the Cooperative Research Centre for Developing Northern Australia (CRCNA).

Greater Whitsunday Alliance chief executive officer Ms Kylie Porter said the research will identify key Mackay Isaac Whit-

sunday (MW) export agricultural products and match those to complementary export markets.

“This research is a key deliverable of the MIW Agribusiness Futures Alliance, which comprises of representatives from key agricultural industry groups, bodies and agencies,” Ms Porter said.

“Maximising our region’s agricultural export potential is an important focus for the future, and we need hard evidence and

research to back future export activities.”

THIS week, I couldn’t believe it, I had to pull out a woolen jumper for the first time in a long time.

While I’m sure we’re all feeling the added chill in the air this week, a positive benefit of the cold snap is that those lower temperatures have activated the growing season for our regional winter produce.

During a chat with Lyn Palmer from Ventons Tropical Blooms and Fruit, she mentioned to me that when the cooler weather arrives Papayas ripen much slower.

Mary-Ann Refalo from “Nannu Johnny’s Farms” agrees with Kevin that it’s definitely the season for cucumbers but she also noted that our recent rainfalls haven’t helped some market items. We should expect a smaller strawberry harvest because, simply put, “strawberries don’t like rain.” Tomato lovers though, will be happy to find boxes beginning to make an appearance, but you’ll need get in early to grab those wonderful heirloom varieties.

In my wanders around the market, I love to pick up on such stories and I find I’m constantly discovering reasons why people love the GWFM. Ray Nash, a customer of Karl Weir from Mackay Sugar Rush explained why he’s a regular.

Pickle me grandmother, two Kingswoods!

BOTH of these beautiful old Kingswoods are owned by Damien and Stacey Underwood.

The Blue HX sedan has been Damien’s baby for around 16 years, having bought it when he was 17 years old as a bit of a do her upper.

The HX originally had a tough little 308 that has seen the fitment of a super charger and plenty of punishment on the track at Powercruise Queensland Raceway.

Damien built a nice 350 fuel injected Chev with a T400 transmission sitting in front of a 9” diff and on convo pro wheels.

The car, like most are, was built to have fun in at events and with the family.

The family loved it so much the Damien and Stacey bought an old HZ wagon that was the perfect family cruiser.

It has an old-school bench seat and column shift auto, so can take six passengers.

The wagon was always meant to be tidy but once the bug kicked in they couldn’t help but do a full restoration on it.

They removed the old 202ci and used the complete 308 drive line out of the Blue HX. They gave it a full body restoration with new paint and a completely new beautiful interior.

It’s the perfect his and hers combo when it comes to hotted up Aussie muscle cars.

CLASSICS: Nothing says Aussie like a Kingswood

Big turnout for drags AN overwhelming turnout at the Palmyra Dragway last weekend showed the region’s support for embattled farmers.

The 2 Envious Car Club teamed up with Mackay Host Lions to stage the “Drag the Farmers Out of Drought” event.

Even with overcast conditions, the crowds came in droves, showing up to enjoy the spectacle, and participate in raffle prizes, dyno, show and shine and of course the drag races.

More than $6900 was raised for the charity event, and organisers have said there is still more to count!

With winners the dyno-like Adam Rohlf being awarded with Encouragement award most powerful NA going to Wade Tucakovic and the most powerful force going to Clayton Zarby.

While the drag awards went to Naomi whitfeild for best reaction time, Vanessa Rohdman for the fastest bike, Luke Rosadi for the fastest car, Fasters 4x4 went to Christina Wilkson and the Encouragement award going to Klayton Gorman.

Sara Mattson and Wade Tucakovic (pictured) said the event had drawn one of the largest crowds and biggest contingents of drag racers that they had seen.

“The weather sort of scared a few people away especially in the morning. It was a slow start because we thought it was going to rain this is our fourth go at this,” Wade said.

“Everything went off without a hitch and it was awesome,” Sara said.

“Our aim was to get everyone out and racing their cars and putting their cars in the dyno and the show and shine, and I think we succeeded.”

ON THE weather front: Today will be a mostly fine day with an odd shower possible. A bit of fog is possible around the usual spots. Saturday looks to be a bit wet with showers around.

Not much in them but enough to make it annoying. Then Sunday will be an overcast day with a change pushing through which will send temperatures back to cool and single digits during Sunday night. Temperatures will hang around between 17°C and 25°C until that change pushes through on Sunday.

Out on the water: Easterly 10-15knots picking

up during the day to then again drop back in the late afternoon. Seas are around a meter increasing to 1.5 offshore, with the swell on and Easterly move of about a metre offshore. Keep an eye on the weather on Sunday as the change pushes through. Staying close to shore or in the creeks may be key this weekend if you need to wet a line.

CATCH: Fishing is fun for all ages

Welcoming the start of July 2021, the tides are looking steady for over the next week with the highest tide no bigger than four metre, with sunrise being the best time of day for fish to be on the bite.

It has been blowing a gale offshore as well as weather conditions being less then desirable. But I hope that hasn’t stopped any of you planning to get out and about this next week. There are many fish species still getting around during our winter months and fortunately for us the King Salmon aka Threadfin Salmon and it’s cousin the Blue Salmon aka Bluenose Salmon are two of those species.

‘Kingys’ school up, meaning they travel in large groups together where they swim through the creek and river systems, dependant on conditions and where the food source is.

They prefer shallow water no deeper than 10m which make them good land-based targets.

So on the outgoing tide, meaning after high tide, the water will start to drop and this enables the Threadfin to patrol drop offs, gutters and holes to ambush bait.

They are a golden yellow when first caught and are a delicious table eating fish. Freshly battered and fried is just a treat and freezing the fillets for this fish is highly recommended also.

The Blue Salmon is a close relative but very different in its own right. The ‘Bluey’ has short whiskers, compared to the Threadfin’s large catlike whiskers. It is much thicker in the tail area and has a silver blue to black colouration.

Storing of this fish after catching is important if to be kept for eating. It should be bled and cooled down directly after catch. The easy accesible bait of choice to lure and catch these species are pilchards, mullet fillets and prawns.

A small running sinker rig with a single hook is required to use either landbased or by boat.

Spring tides are when they make the most movement so when casting do so away from snags and into open water.

So after last week’s beginners guide to your own tackle box here are three excellent and underated fishing spots in the Mackay City Area so that you can snag a delicious fish!

First spot is the Pioneer River which is 120km of Fish Highway! On River Street in the heart of Mackay there are a number of fishing platforms on either side of the Forgan Bridge which cater to all anglers.

Best bait to use would be prawns, squid and herring. It is a safe family friendly fishing spot that is easy accessible, has public toilets, BBQ facilities and a kids’ play park next to one of the platforms, you beauty!

There is parking on Brisbane Street and this is a great place to start your fishing addiction.

My second spot is still on the Pioneer River but further down the river system. The Hospital Bridge Fishing Pier is located after the Mackay Base Hospital at the end of Bridge Road where it comes to an end-roundabout with a parking area for those wanting to fish off the platform.

It has wheelchair access, seating and rod holders and again is very family friendly.

I recommend fishing on the two hours before high tide as it gets quite low that far up the river, but the fish still get there - do not worry! Best bait to use is fresh squid, prawns or slabs of mullet.

My third fishing spot to go and check out is the Mackay Marina Rock Wall in North Mackay, only 15 minutes from Mackay City.

Again this fishing spot is family friendly with places to fish starting at the Yacht Club. You can drive all the way to the end of breakwater Rd, fish off the rocks and watch the boats venture in after a day offshore the southern Whitsundays.

I do recommend bringing bigger sinkers to withstand the large tidal swell and the best bait to use would be pilchards and squid. Don’t forget to hold on to tight if you get a bite!

But not to worry if you don’t catch a family feed as the Marina holds a number of catering spots, including The Lighthouse Mackay’s fresh local caught seafood on standby for all your fish and chip cravings.

Runners blitz infamous challenge AROUND forty Mackay Road Runners entered the infamously challenging Robbo’s 69 Steps 5km and 10km event.

The crisp, windy conditions prevailed throughout the entire event, although was perfect for running as no snow on the many testing Mt Pleasant hilltops. Club President, Tim Magoffin, welcomed the courageous crowd before he described the two loop course for 10k’ers with one loop option for the 5km.

The event namesake and former Mackay Road Runners member, Graham Robinson, loved setting a sizzling pace on the 69 steps between High and Pollock Streets, Mt Pleasant.

Runners bolted from their individual club handicap start lead by Club stalwarts, Stuart Sprott, Jan Smith and Colin Hardy. Ross Vickers was in fine form as he raced the first downhill section to maintain a consistent pace,

finishing first overall on handicap in the 10km.

New Member, Angela Seng made another resounding stamp on local turf as she blitzed the 10km, crossing the line first for the girls and third overall via her handicap start. Although, unrivalled favourites of the day were Jeannine and Owen from Cafe2U who, without taking a step on Robbo’s route, were the major prize as far as runners/supporters were concerned!

Ten and five kilometre runners enjoyed a speedy outing despite the conditions with excellent results open for review by the handicapper in the wake of superb running by Hamish Donnollan, Ross Vickers, Tim Magoffin, Teresa Hackney, Emma Johnson, Tahnie Malagueno, Carolyn Steginga, Mick Scholer, Alex Couldrey, Joe Grech, John Couldrey, Dee McMurtrie, Derek Woods, Peter Ellison, Bec Scholer, Jeanette Farrugia, Glynis Forse, Stephen Oberg, Jarrod Symonds, Cooper Leeson,

David Isbister and Robin Stinson.

Great to see Stuart Sprott return to the stage after a serious injury absence. Andrew Wallace enjoyed a return to the warm temperatures of the local running scene after a hiatus in chilly Bathurst. Carmel Mahon, Jo Hughes, Judy Zahn, Jo Ashford, Simon Henderson, Merv Shields maintained excellent consistency throughout their respective events.

Many thanks once again to race day volunteers including registrar/ timekeepers, Arthur Dick and Julie Whibley and race setup/packup, Andrew Short and Tim Magoffin.

Due to the Gold Coast Marathon being on this weekend, Mackay Road Runners will continue their weekly events this weekend with a very social 5km and 10km from the Bluewater Quay at 4pm. All welcome for a $2 race fee for members, $10 race fee for casual day runners.

TRAINING: The All-Abilities team training and keeping fit

No stopping mighty All-Abilities THERE is just no stopping the Mighty All-Abilities Cutters!

Rhonda Adams has completed training that will have her appointed to the role of accredited coach of the side, giving the team a solid preparation in the lead up to the upcoming match against the Townsville Blackhawks All-Ability teams on the July 28.

SNAGS (Special Needs And Group Support) President Kathryn Andrews said there would be no stopping the team from training under Adams’ watchful eye, which would be further aided by the guidance of Martin Bella.

The team’s members will also have the chance to let their hair

down next weekend, with the SNAGS disco to be held at the Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) on July 10.

Entry to the disco and dinner presentation event will be $25 per person and the Mackay All abilities Cutters plus sponsors, family and friends will be in attendance.

There will also be fundraising opportunities at the event.

SNAGS founder Rhonda Adams said the event would be fundraiser for SNAGS, but also a presentation night for all the All Abilities for their good work going up to Townsville earlier this year.

QUICK! Think of the worst possible place for a noise-shy autistic reporter to go and have to cover for a story!

Have you got it?

If you’re thinking something like a Speedway full of people, loud noises, funny smells, and unexpected – well – unexpected everything, then you are absolutely right.

But to the Speedway I went, and I was there for you - the reader but I was really covering the drag races purely for the benefit of someone else entirely: Our Queensland, drought-stricken farmers who are doing it really tough at the moment.

Walking around the Palmyra Dragway race track, I could see many amazing vehicles some restored classics. Some for show and some to race, and while the

sky was overcast it didn’t stop more and more people from turning out to see cars speeding along the strip.

The smell of burning rubber excited the crowd and brought more people than expected, as I later found out from event organizers, Sara and her partner Wade.

It’s an event that has been a few years in the making.

The signs of this are obvious: There are still banners with the original dates on them but due to rain and last year’s Covid craziness, this event has been pushed back time and time again.

Finally, though, it happened.

It happened thanks to all the tireless efforts from organisers, and the event will help our farmers.

It made me smile to think about how selfless some people can be to provide entertainment do something to help out those who truly need it.

LONG: A drag car about to get into the action learnt, that if something is utterly worth fighting for, people will do everything in their power to make it happen - come hell or high water.

There’s not a lot which will stop them doing something they love to help those in need.

This is what the world needs more of.

We can make a change to someone else’s life if we work hard enough.

And whatever the barrier, if we fight for what we love, we can do anything.

That is what I learnt. And from the hundreds of smiling faces and cheering spectators who donated money, just to come watch these vehicles burn rubber, it’s just another highlight of how great Mackay can truly be.

And as for me? It was a chance to once again see things differently.

What was once a scary, loud, unpredictable situation which I couldn’t control, was now a fantastic example of really good things being done in our community.

And that’s definitely the way I’d rather look at it.

Softball squad to pump out the hits

HIT: Hey Batter, Batter, Batter, Batter....SA-WING BATTER!

MACKAY Softball Season will take a short break and resume on July 10.

The season will continue until Sptember with the grand final being played September 11.

Although the season is taking a pause, Mackay softball will be holding representatives trials on Sunday from 10am til 2pm for boys and girls, U-16 and U-18.

Players from Rockhampton and Gladstone will combine with Mackay players for the teams.

Squads will be selected for the state championship to be held September 18-22 for the U-6 age group, with the boys being held here in Mackay. The girls will travel to Brisbane.

Boys U-18 will travel to Ips-

wich with the girls going to Redcliffe to play October 2-4.

The Mackay Softball Association is hosting the U-16 boys’ state championship with an expected 10 teams to participate from around the state.

From there a QLD team will be named to play next year in January.

The men will also be trialing out soon, heading to Redlands September 4-6.

The Association is hoping to be sending a B men’s And A men’s team away again this year.

Women will also be trialing soon, as they head to Caboolture in October. This is the third year Mackay has sent a women’s team

Bare Bones, big heart BARE Bones Racing is a father, daughter race team was formed when Katelyn the main driver was injured through dancing.

She was told there would be no more physical sports that involved running and jumping.

She then began searching for a new sport and off-road buggy racing caught her attention.

Dad Les, the navigator, was hesitant but because Katelyn was a junior racer and needed a fully licensed navi, it was all systems go.

The team purchased a little 900cc RZR Polaris buggy in 2018.

Les got a feel for being behind the wheel and loved every minute of it. He even managed to place on the podium. The team struck a deal wherreby Les was allowed to race one race a year at Carnage Park in Sarina and Katelyn got to race every other race.

Katelyn raced two races later that year, striking it lucky like her dad had earlier in the year.

In 2019 the decision was made to purchase yet another buggy to become more competitive, a 1000cc RZR Polaris. Since then the team have competed in

the Queensland championships, Gladestone short course championships and Carnage Park.

At the end of 2020 Katelyn picked up third in ladies outright for the Queensland championships.

However, it doesn’t all come down to Katelyn’s driving. It’s the countless hours Les spends in the shed getting the buggy ready for a race and those last minute repairs.

Katelyn is forever grateul for dad, Les. “Dad is my amazing navi, my mechanic and he holds the bank of dad,” she said.

The team’s mission is to show people that you can race on a budget, you don’t have to have the flashes set up, and most importantly girls can drive too.

Bare Bones will be attending the Newman Excavation 100 on July 16-18 in Moranbah, in the hope to place well in the North Queensland championships.

All competing racecars will be parked in Moranbah town square on the 16th from 6-9pm for public display. Feel free to catch up with the team either in town square or at the track.

Big weekend IT WAS another big weekend at the Proserpine Golf Club with 91 turning out on Saturday for the Whitsunday Master Butchers trophy. The men’s winners were Lance Lloyd with a great 42 stableford points, from Jim Grace, 40 and Brian Allen 39 on a count back from Adam Maggs.

In the ladies’ event Marlene Gray came home a winner with 36 points from Elspeth Scotford 35, and Tiina Randmae 34. Other place getters were Steve Maguire, 38, John Bissell, Darren Reynolds and Mat Bower, 37, Jim Cochrane, Sam Marschke and Paul Douthwaite, 36, Anna Winterbourn, 33, June Bulger 32 and Lyn Muller 31.

Pennant play

ROUND SEVEN of the men’s pennants in Proserpine Bowls was played on Sunday morning.

Division One were at home to Sarina. Nathan Dodds, Luchie Gardel, Scott Hamilton and Wayne Handley had a big win 26 to 9, Shane Kinnear, Marcus Craig, Jonathan Bye and Gavin Milne had a 23 to 16 win and Michael Kinnear, Graham Kinnear, Barry Saroglia and Nathan Harriott had a 15 to 24 loss on the cursed Rink 9. This gave the boys an overall win of 64 to 49. The same sides will travel to Northern Beaches on Saturday and will be home to Souths Suburban on Sunday. Division 4 was also at home to City Bowls Club. The team of Martin Corr, Phil Brown, Jim Quod and Dale Haack had a big win 29 to 10 and the team of Peter Lawton, Marty Flowers, Toby Craig and Todd Leys had a 17 to 21 loss.

Adrenalin rush as girls fly through air MACKAY’S Adrennalin Cheer and Dance club had 114 athletes competed in 20 divisions across the weekend at the Aussie Gold Showoffs Championship.

Clubs and schools from Mackay, Sarina, Mirani, Biloela, Rockhampton, Townsville and Yeppoon competed over two days at the Mackay Multisports Stadium.

The Mackay club had a sensational weekend across the board placing taking first place in 16 divisions and second in four divisions.

This included group stunts, Pom, hip hop, jazz and, of course, cheer team divisions levels onefive. The junior level one Scorpi-

ons and Senior level two Untamed cheer teams both took out major awards which was grand champions of their level across all age divisions.

The event was the first for the season for Adrenalin who will be heading to Brisbane in August for the next Eutopia championship event.

The athletes were unable to compete last year due to the COVID pandemic so they are absolutely thrilled to return to competition with such strong starting results. Sign ins for 2022 teams will be held in September school holidays this year for anyone interested in getting their children into the sport.

Mt Vince hits the target

THE MT VINCE “come and try shooting” small bore was attended by around twenty visitors with sixteen having a go over the 50-metre distance using electronic targets over the weekend.

Because there was no set rule in the number of shots fired, some fired five shots or 10 shots and then lined up later to fire some more, no scores were recorded, that will come at a later date. But there were some squeals of joy when the bull-eye was hit.

They came as family or singles and all went away very happy knowing it is not as easy as it looks. A few are coming back next Sunday to have a look at the start of the long range shooting program for the new shooting year starting at 800 metres.

Kaylee makes it to Coast Squad RISING star Kaylee Kimber (pictured right) has made it into the Gold Coasts Under 17s Squad.

The 17-year-old Moranbah Bulldogs AFL player had been a netball player before trying AFL and as soon as she hit the field it was apparent: she was a natural Senior Ladies Moranbah Bulldogs coach Tim Davis was instantly wowed by her skills and her attitude – what makes it more impressive is the fact that this is Kaylee’s first year playing.

“This attitude towards sports will take her to so many places,” Tim said.

“I have been lucky enough to coach her this year and saw straight away that she was going to make an impact.”

If Kaylee can make it past this round, she will make it to Gold Coast squad to play against the Brisbane Lions.

Kaylee isn’t the only one to reach this milestone, either. Alana Gee who plays for the Saints, and Indiana Brough from Bakers Creek have also be named in the squad.

Winners of the comp will face the Brisbane Lions.

Kaylee’s Mother and fellow player, Chrissey, said she was “very excited” for her daughter to be picked for the Gold Coast side.

“Pretty amazing for only playing for six months she started with netball and has come across to AFL and she has done fantastically,” Chrissey said.

“I can’t wait to see where this takes you and have no doubt you will continue working hard to reach all your goals footy and non-footy related!” Tim said.

Country racing wins nugget’s notes

QUEENSLAND Country Racing was showcased at Eagle Farm last Saturday with scenes of jubilation boiling over in the winners stall with the connections of prevailing in a keenly contested $200000 Battle of the Bush series final (1200 m).

Dalby based trainer David Reynolds stood proudly by the winners stall when jockey Wendy Peel brought Rather Salubrious ($15.00) back to scale after their barnstorming win in the $200000 event.

The five-year-old, now a winner of

close to $350,000 has made a name for itself on the country circuit taking out the Goondiwindi battle of the bush heat to qualify for the the final. Wendy gave the Dalby runner a perfect run in transit.

Peel kept the mare rolling out of trouble after jumping from barrier six and was presented at 200 metre mark to run down country iron horse Bollente $4.00 with Ashley Butler doing everything perfectly. The 62 kilograms beat the Winton galloper.

Local Emerald galloper Awanechee was a brave fast finishing with Melbourne cup winning jockey Craig Williams onboard.

In the lead up to Saturday’s final Williams had a major setback with champion jockey Hugh Bowman un-

able to take the ride on Awanechee due to the Covid outbreak in NSW. The quick-thinking Williams was luckily able to engage the services of Melbourne cup winning jockey Craig Williams who is based in Queensland over the winter carnival. Craig gave the Williams trained Galloper a 10/10 ride in transit running in to third placing.

The boy from the bush came, saw and didn’t quite conquer. But for owner Mick Calvert and team Williams they will have memories that will last them a lifetime.

Their day in the big smoke and for the efforts over $20,000 in prizemoney for the third placing and starter subsidies will hit their bank accounts in coming weeks.

Not a bad effort for the Pioneer Park boys from the bush.

“The event is the only one of its kind in Australia and one of the few in the world with more than 5000 people in attendance.

“So there are many people who can see why the event is so important to the sporting and racing community of Mackay.”

Ms Hand said the races would be a fan-

tastic family day with quad bikes, junior riders, senior riders and street bikes on the beach.

Off the track there will also be rides and a mini Eat Street.

“There are very real concerns about covid, and we are on top of it and doing everything we can to make this happen,” Ms Hand said.

QR code scanners will be in place for the event and online ticketing is available for those planning to attend.

Airlie darts towards finals

ROUND 16 of the Airlie Darts competition sees the club 10 weeks away from finals darts.

They had a couple of catch-up matches this week, the first of which saw Seumas Rose defeat Ross Gallichan 6/1.

The other game was a round-15 clash between Aaron Paull and Jason Rockstroh.

Aaron hit a nice 180 along the way to winning his second match of the season 6/3 over Jason.

In round 16 they had wins for top-of-the-table Jamie Woods over Jamie Maher 6/1.

Jamie hit the club record of 160 check out in that match. Andy Peel is pushing hard for a top 4 spot with a 6/3 win over Aaron Paull in his second match of the day.

Seumas Rose had an impressive 6/1 win in his second game over Garry Robbie.

And Ross Gallichan recorded his sixth win of the season with an impressive win over Joe Wilson 6/3.

The trio rubbed shoulders with the who’s who of racing in Australia and all agreed that the battle of the bush is now the pinnacle of everything a country racing licencee could hope to win and hopes to be back next year.

Meanwhile, the Pepperina Park race track in Clermont will come alive this Saturday when Bill Bell and his team at the Clermont Race Club host the club’s showpiece meeting, the annual Tony (Pud) Kenny Clermont Cup. The club has plenty of action and entertainment planned.

The racing surface will be presented picture perfect, as it always is, by track curator Bill Bell and the five race program will carry over $50000 in prizemoney which has ensured top quality fields. Gates open 11am.

Grasstree to light up

GRASSTREE beach is set to light up again this weekend with the annual Grasstree beach races to be held on Sunday.

The races are expected to attract more than five thousand racers from throughout Queensland – and as they

say in the greats, ‘the show must go on’ in spite of COVID-19 lockdowns in other regions and states.

Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson said the event’s go-ahead was assured, as long as the local region didn’t go into lockdown.

“This is a great event for the Mackay region and unless we are on lock down this weekend, this event will go ahead,” Cr Williamson said.

Grasstree beach organizer and member of Gum Valley Motorcycle Club Ann Hand has helped make the beach

races a reality for the past five years.

“They started in Mackay in 1926 and this will be the 95th year of the event,” Ms Hand said.
