BASILIKOS 2018
“Royal - Belonging to the King”
our values are clear…
Christlikeness – We aim to be a College where Students and Staff freely express their spirituality and where the policies and procedures reflect the heart and mind of Christ. Matt 5:15, Matt 22:37, Deut 5:7-10
Learning – We aim to develop and implement quality curriculum and curriculum delivery within a culture of professionalism, which effectively imparts a Biblical World View, promotes a culture of excellence by providing challenging and stimulating learning experiences that enable students to explore their gifts and talents, improves learning outcomes and provides the opportunity for every student to experience success, and appropriately recognises National and State directions. Ps 119:105, Eph 6:7-8, Heb 5:11-13
Excellence – We aim to be a College that reflects standards of excellence in character and behavior, staff and student performance, activities, educational resources, facilities, grounds, and presentation. Jn 3:20-21, Col 3:23, 2 Tim 2:15
Attitude – We aim to develop a College culture that breeds confidence and reflects Christlike attitudes and actions. Ja 4:10, Matt 5:3, Job 22:29, Lk 15:8-10
Respect – We aim to create and maintain a safe, productive, supportive and caring work environment within which self, others, property, authority and God are treated with respect. Deut 5:16, Rom 13:7, Eph 5:8-11, 1 Pet 2:9, 2 Pet 1:5-9, 1 Jn 1:7, 1 Jn 2:2-10

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
2018, the year in review.
It is important to pause and reflect as we reach the end of another school year for two main reasons. The first of these reasons is the opportunity to reflect on the growth and development of our Year 12 group as they prepare to leave the college and venture out into the world of the adult.
As we celebrate 2018, we are celebrating the culmination of thirteen years of hard work and effort in the pursuit of the goal of preparing a group of young people to go out into the world and be all that God wants them to be.
While initially you may have thought I was referring to the students, I was also referring to the parents and teachers of those young people. I often describe education as a three-legged stool. The combined efforts of the student, the teacher, and the family make education successful.
For the Year 12 of 2018, this year is the close of a chapter of teamwork between the college and home and the start of a new chapter. As the principal of these wonderful students, I congratulate the students and their parents on the successes they have achieved. I look forward in anticipation to the outstanding accomplishments of these fine young men and women, not just in their work or sport, but I also look forward to the way their compassion and kindness will affect those around them to make this world a better place.
The second reason that it is good to pause and reflect as we end another school year and head into Christmas holidays is that often in the busyness of the year, we can miss the important moments. I am not sure who said it, but a quote that touches my heart says, “Life is not about the number of breaths you take, but about the moments that take your breath away.” Often we can get so caught up in day-to-day life that those important moments do not get the attention they deserve.
It is important to pause every so often and take a moment to look back and reflect on the many blessings and special moments that have occurred that make our life joyful. As you read this yearbook and see all of the smiles and happy faces, remember these moments of joy.
In the second half of John 10:10 Jesus said, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” This yearbook is a celebration of that abundant life for the year of 2018 at Mackay Christian College. Enjoy.
Yours faithfully,
Dr Barclie GallograyJunior School Celebration Night 2017

FROM THE COLLEGE CAPTAINS
From Senior Celebration Night 2017 to now has given me a great sudden awareness. The very idea of being in Year 12 challenges not only everything you have ever known about school but your very perception of life and forces you to re-evaluate yourself. What parts of your character will continue outside school? What will you leave behind? While being College Captain has been phenomenal and I highly recommend it, there is one thing that having this role has taught me. It’s that I am no more of a leader now than I was last year, or the years before that. Possessing a leadership role is not what makes you a leader; unwavering, inspiring character is what makes a real leader. This means, never think that you can’t be a leader until you’re in Year 12 or if you have a leadership position. Strive to do your best every single day of your life.
Being the 2018 College Captain has been an experience that my fellow captains and I do not regret. I thank the Mackay Christian College community for allowing me to have this experience. Never underestimate the welcoming environment that Mackay Christian College possesses, it is a one of a kind.
Samuel Brooks | College Captain
As a student in Middle School you are totally oblivious about the connections and relationships you are building with your teachers. It is only in your Senior years where those relationships finally come to fruition. A teachers’ classroom becomes an area where you not only learn but a place where you can enjoy yourself whilst doing so.
Nothing although comes close to the relationship the four captains forge with Mr Hopper over the three and a half terms of Year 12. Our weekly meetings were often a sanctuary to which we could openly discuss what the next week had in store and any issues we had seen around the college that needed to be addressed. We frequently laughed together and communicated with God for guidance and safety coming into the next week. We built a positive dynamic with Mr Hopper that felt like it was five friends having lunch together. It is this dynamic time with Mr Hopper and the four captains that I hope the incoming leaders for 2019 will cherish as much as we have.
When looking back at my 12 years of schooling at MCC, I can honestly say that I didn’t always enjoy coming to school. As I’ve gotten older, I began to realise that school was going to happen regardless of whether I wanted it to or not. From this I resolved to try my hardest and make the best of it. Throughout the remainder of my schooling, I have been able to enjoy being involved in the school’s sporting teams and in particular Rugby 7’s. In this team, I had the opportunity to play for a school that I genuinely believe has had my best interests at heart, helped me to pursue them and most of all allowed me to create friendships with people that are not necessarily within my usual circle.
Given this, my advice to future captains is that you don’t have to be the smartest to gain this position, but it is the way in which you present yourself every day that matters.
Demi Bella | College Captain
After 13 years at MCC, I safely say that no one will ever find a school as incredible as this one. Each moment has shaped me into the person I am today and being the 2018 College Female Vice Captain was just the icing on the cake. With graduation looming in the distance and my final year of schooling almost behind me, I have learnt that it is of paramount importance to make the most of every opportunity - no matter how big or small.
This year, I had the utmost privilege of attending the ANZAC Day service. At the event, I stood alongside my fellow College Captains and placed a wreath down to honour the soldiers who fought for our nation's freedom. This was a very memorable event and was just one of the many opportunities I had the honour to participate in as College Vice Captain.
As American business man Harvey McKay once said, “Time is free, but it's priceless. You can't own it, but you can use it. You can't keep it, but you can spend it. Once you've lost it you can never get it back.” To all students of MCC, make the most of every opportunity you are presented with because each day only comes around once!

Averill
Thank you for a good year Averill! 2018 has been a fantastic year and we have so much fun being your House Captains and Leaders.
Watching the House Family grow and develop over the past 12 months has been an immense blessing and privilege. This year we have introduced a new mascot and logo to the house, “Wolfie” who will watch over the house for years to come. After many years, we have finally parted from our previous mascot, “Speedy Gonzales” and though we will remember him fondly we are excited to see a fresh face in the house. To work as a team over the past year in various carnivals, House Family events and activities, as well as just at school has been an incredible boost to the House Family spirit.
Well done and congratulations to not only the upcoming captains but also the Year 12 cohort of 2019. We wish you the best of luck for your final year of school. Thank you to all of Averill for an incredible year, and good luck for 2019 and beyond. GO AVERILL!

Dennis
Dennis is a House Family built on culture, family and fun. In the past, Dennis has been known as the ‘annoying’ house with bad behaviour. However, this year all the students in Dennis have grown up and changed into amazing and unique individuals; they have learned to work together and mature as people. It has been a privilege and an honour to be a House Captain for Dennis. Each one of our leadership team have enjoyed serving in a number of capacities. We have certainly faced challenges but have been able to work well together and help one another.
We would like to thank Mr Millward and the whole of the Dennis House Family. These people have made Dennis the amazing family it is today. To the future House Captains: good luck, work hard, collaborate efficiently and have fun. Being captain can be stressful and full of painful moments, but remember, Year 12 is a year you will not forget!

Evans
2018 has been a year that none of us will forget. Evans House Family has had a lot of ups and downs, with the two main achievements from this year being 1. Winning the swimming carnival and 2. Coming a close second in the athletics carnival.
We captains have loved and appreciated the enthusiasm the younger students have brought to Evans throughout the year. We want to thank all of our Evans members who have participated in everything that they could for the House Family.
We have overcome some bumps in the road this year but it was always simple to overcome the obstacles that were in our way whilst working as a team. In spite of the difficulties, Evans has had a fantastic year and has grown closer together as a family. We captains couldn’t be more proud to finish off our last year of schooling leading Evans House Family.
Good luck to the future captains. We wish you all the best with balancing your studies in such a significant role next year. To soar and to serve. Way to go Evans, way to go!!

As 2018 comes to a close, we have taken some time to reflect on what an amazing year we have had as Young House Family.
For the captains it was a dream come true, not only having two chapel services but two swimming carnivals as well. We thoroughly enjoyed planning and running every single House Family, along with mentoring and gaining many friendships with our other House Family members. We would like to thank all the amazing students we had the opportunity to lead. We would also like to thank all our families, friends, and the other House Families for their support throughout the year. Most importantly we would like to thank Miss Hopper for her continuous dedication to the House Family and support she has provided to each captain. To the future captains, always keep your head up, it’s an amazing experience. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work!
