ceremony for the Captains. The camps were postponed to occur once restrictions were lifted. Grandparents Day became a series of online messages spread over the world. ZACH MACH and carnivals had to be modified and were mostly restricted to participants, with observers doing so virtually. With each trial came an adaptation, a modification, a way of preserving the spirit of the event while obeying the restrictions. It was a restriction, and we made it a meaningful adaptation.
Welcome to the Mackay Christian College Basilikos for 2020.
This year has been, to use the oft used word, unprecedented. We began the year with bush fires that burned their way through the area I grew up in and ended the year on the slow rise out of a global pandemic. The year can be well summed up in the catch phrase adopted by the graduating class of 2020, “It is what it is, but it is also what you make of it”.
This year we had a try at digital learning from home for a little while and learned some important things, both as a school full of teachers, a school full of students, and a community full of parents. The teachers learned a lot of new technologies and how to use them to create effective learning environments. The students learned about how they learn best, whether at home or at school. Many of the parents expressed that they learned a much greater appreciation of the hard work that teachers do each day to help students learn. We all learned something. It was a trying experience but we made it a learning experience.
The Parent Association had the same challenges. How do you run events for students and the community when you can’t even come on campus? Mothers day stalls, Fathers day stalls, meetings and so on. You run them virtually, with online shops and online meetings. Again the team accepted what it was and made it something different something that worked in spite of the restrictions.
The lessons of 2020 can best be summarised in the Serenity prayer. “Lord grant us the Serenity to accept the things we cannot change, the strength to change those we can, and the wisdom to know the difference”. Or in the words of Year 12 of 2020, “It is what it is, but it’s also what you make it”.
God bless, and see you in 2021.
When we returned to the classroom it was with a whole new set of rules to follow to keep COVID from being spread amongst our community. Almost all of the usual activities of the year were cancelled. ANZAC Day, Camps, Grandparents Day, ZACH MACH, carnivals and many others, could not go ahead as planned. So we adapted. ANZAC Day became a private wreath laying

In my honest opinion, 2020 has been an absolute blast. This might sound crazy, but the truth is that it has been a real opportunity for not only myself but my fellow Captains to try and adapt and overcome challenges that have been put in our way by COVID-19.
One thought that comes to mind is our weekly routine of starting the new school week in the Faith Centre for morning assembly. Obviously due to COVID restrictions our assemblies were cancelled for a lengthy period of time, but this allowed us to brainstorm new ideas on how we could still keep students up to date and engaged with events happening within the college community.
With majority of the world taking advantage of online platforms, there was no reason why we couldn’t too. So that’s exactly what we did.
At the beginning of Term 2, we introduced Mackay Christian College’s version of online assembly which was uploaded to ClickView every Monday morning ready for House Family at 8:25am.
This continued until the end of Term 2 when we were able to resume our morning assemblies in the Faith Centre once again at the commencement of Term 3.To sum this up in 8 words, Jim Rohn once quoted, ‘Focus on the solution, not on the problem.” Well this was our solution.
Clayton Hewitt College CaptainI have been at MCC since Prep. I was someone who didn’t have a lot of confidence growing up, but being given the opportunity of becoming female School Captain was a blessing in disguise.
Over the years our Formal events have basically stayed the same, except for this year. Unfortunately, there were many changes due to Covid-19, but it was a blessing to still be able to hold some form of each event.
On Anzac Day we were still able to pay our respects and remember those who have fallen but we weren’t able to march together.
Founders Day, we were able to acknowledge the land beneath our feet and the Founders of this school. For the future female School Captains, continue to do your best no matter the circumstances, and remember the teachers chose you for this role for a reason.
This year has been a roller coaster of a year, which doesn’t help considering it is also our final year of school.
When we began this year our goal was to change the landscape of the school and create a student driven school. We planned to do this by all students in the school standing up and being held accountable and helping wherever they can.
Student driven assemblies and student driven Chapels definitely helped build this culture and helped achieve our goal.
Although we encountered roadblocks along the way, I strongly believe that us captains and the school community succeeded in our mission to create a student driven school.
Thank goodness tear stains do not appear electronically as I find it difficult to say farewell to Mackay Christian College and the wonderful community behind it. Reflecting on my journey not only as female Vice-Captain for MCC but also just as an unfortunate COVID-19 affected student has been a cathartic rollercoaster.
It has been an inside joke between our cohort that Year 12 students in Queensland have been the guinea pigs for each new change that has come to the education system, as we were the first group of Year 7’s to enter high school and now the first seniors to graduate with an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) instead of an OP.
Even though the journey has been a difficult one for my peers and I, and has opened my eyes to the challenges that the world can throw upon us, it has also revealed to me just how resilient MCC students are when new changes come about.
Adjusting to ATAR was as difficult for me as I believe it was for every Year 12 – a lot of nights were spent drowning in a sea of unfinished assignments and the impending doom of exams.
I won’t sugarcoat it, ATAR is difficult, but doable if you are confident in how much you can achieve.
I am proud of the determination and grit my cohort has shown throughout 2020, because even though we may have missed out on the ‘traditional’ year as a graduating student, we made new fonder memories that only we shall cherish forever.
I would like to thank everyone for allowing me to serve you as your female Vice-Captain. It was truly a blessing to be able to experience being a ‘Covid Captain’. I encourage the future leaders of MCC to continue to lead and serve others through Christlikeness, Learning, Excellence, Attitude and Respect, while also remembering to just be a better version of yourself than what you were the day before.
As an iconic Industry Super Fund advertisement once said, “we’re all in this together.”
Wow what a year it has been. This year didn’t go as planned and wasn’t the year we would have liked but Averill, you have shown everyone the strength and courage that you have, throughout this year with all of the challenges it has had.
Being House Family Captains has been challenging and a lot of work but having each other and Ms McQuaker by our side, has made it easier. The students in Averill have a passion that was obvious in everything you have achieved and participated in this year. You are all truly a blessing.
It was so much fun being the House Family Captains for 2020 and we will miss our House Family time Wednesdays the most. It is what it is, but is also what we make of it. Thanks for the year and for making the most of it.
2020 has been a memorable year for Dennis House Family. We have been through a lot of ups and down but we have managed to push through these hard times together and have a fun year full of laughter. It has been a joy to lead and make new friendships with you guys and we would not have the Dennis spirit without you guys.
We would like to thank Mrs Ferreira for being a great mentor and someone we can always go to in times of need. We also want to thank the Dennis cohort for being the coolest kids in the school and making this a great last year for us Seniors.
Even though it has been a stressful and challenging year due to Covid, Dennis House Family has worked together to have a fun and always put a smile on our face.
To the future House Family Captains it is not all about winning but having fun and making memories. Also please practice war cries. We are so grateful to have the opportunity to be House Captains to such a wonderful House Family.
Good luck to the future Captains and House Family and remember “we are a force to be reckoned with”.
Through the challenges COVID has given to us, we had to take initiative and be creative with our approach to House Family. These challenges have given us an opportunity to envision something new for the students to enjoy and participate in.
We appreciate that this opportunity has helped bring Evans as a House Family together and has helped create a community where students feel they belong. We are proud of the participation and development as a House Family in school events such as litter duty or swimming carnival.
We would like to thank Mrs Corry for coaching us and supporting us to create a great atmosphere of belonging in Evans House. We are thankful to be a part of such an amazing House Family and we wish the best of luck for the future Captains of Evans 2021
2020 has been an unusual year of unforeseen challenges and victories. This year, we have enjoyed participating in activities with the other House Families during our time on Wednesdays and hearing devotions from our student body. We are also thankful to have still had the opportunity to participate in the sporting carnivals this year.
Young House has celebrated the success of its members who have won age champion at the carnivals, set new records, participated in various competitions and represented the school at state and national finals. We also honour those who gave their best and received Thank You awards for their acts of service and kindness.
We would like to thank all the students of Young House, our families, friends, and the other House Families for their support throughout the year. We would like to thank Miss Hopper for being a great mentor and someone we can always go to in times of need. All the best to the future Captains and remember “Teamwork Makes the Dream Work”.

As we all know 2020 is like no other year which has meant we haven’t been able to visit the lovely residents of Resthaven Nursing Home like we have in previous years and we couldn’t run a few of our usual events in the same way however we got creative and still managed to run Bullying, No Way Day on Providence Campus and RUOK? Day on King's Park Campus.
This year we were blessed with a new RUOK? Day notes designed by Amy Tappert in Year 10 so on RUOK? Day high school students wrote uplifting notes to our primary school students where they were received with smiles and joy.
On the day students and staff are asked to be brave and wear Odd Socks to help stamp out the stigma around mental health and to be a good friend by starting a conversation if they notice someone looking “odd” or not their normal selves.
A gold coin donation was collected to go towards Teen Mental Health First Aid training for our students in partnership with Headspace.
We thank everyone for their support this year and we wish the incoming CARE Ambassadors of 2021 all the very best in making 2021 a fun year.
