MERLO UK STRENGTHENS CUSTOMER AND DEALER SUPPORT THROUGH ENHANCED TECHNICAL TRAINING PROGRAMME

W

ith hands-on courses delivered at its Ringwood training centre and through its dealer network, Merlo UK is equipping engineers with the expertise needed to deliver the highest standards of technical support to customers.

Merlo UK’s dedicated training programme has supported more than 220 engineers and dealer personnel across the UK and Ireland this year, helping to develop technical expertise, promote safe working practices and prepare the dealer network for future technologies.

As machinery technology continues to evolve, ensuring engineers have deep expertise to support customers with confidence remains a key priority for Merlo UK. Its technical training programme forms part of the company’s wider dealer support and aftersales offering, building on the expertise delivered from its Ringwood headquarters.

Ireland, the programme currently offers 25 technical training courses, with this number set to grow as new products are introduced and technology continues to advance. Each course is designed to equip engineers with the skills needed to keep machines working efficiently, from first diagnosis through to maintenance and repair. For customers, that means the peace of mind that wherever their machines are operating, they’re backed by highly skilled Merlo engineers trained to deliver fast, effective support that keeps their business moving.

Practical training, built on real-world experience

Leading the programme is Training Manager Sam Bowles, who is responsible for developing and delivering training courses across Merlo UK’s dealer network. Drawing on more than a decade of experience in agricultural and construction equipment engineering, Bowles works closely with dealers to ensure their teams remain up to date with the latest products and technologies, while shaping practical training around

the challenges engineers face in the field.

The Ringwood training centre, which opened in 2021, was purpose-built for practical training. With access to dedicated machines, specialist training rigs and dismantled machine components, engineers can build familiarity with Merlo systems in a realistic learning environment, away from the pressure of a live customer breakdown.

The programme offers foundation training for those new to Merlo products, as well as more advanced modules on the systems engineers work with every day, including hydraulics, driveline, electrics and diagnostics. Courses can also be tailored to individual requirements, allowing engineers to focus on the areas most relevant to their role and level of experience.

Designed to support engineers at every stage of their career, the programme provides a clear pathway for progression.

Whether completely new to Merlo machines, looking to broaden existing expertise or a technically advanced engineer with decades of experience, the

merlo uk courses are designed to challenge and develop engineers’ technical expertise.

For Shaun Groom, General Manager at Merlo UK, the breadth of training is central to the programme’s success.

“Every engineer is at a different stage of their career, so it’s important our training reflects that,” says Groom. “Sam has built a programme that grows with our engineers. As new products and technologies are introduced, the training continues to evolve, giving engineers new opportunities to develop throughout their careers.”

Building confidence through specialist training

Among the growing portfolio of specialist courses available is Merlo UK’s ROTO telehandler training programme, which gives engineers an in-depth understanding of one of Merlo’s most advanced product ranges. Over the course of a week, attendees move from machine operation into system understanding, diagnostics and fault finding, building the confidence to support ROTO machines when customers need them most.

Through BAGMA-accredited courses, engineers can also gain the qualifications needed to undertake Thorough Examinations, helping dealer teams support machine safety through critical

inspections and compliance checks.

Feedback from attendees has been overwhelmingly positive, with Merlo UK’s training courses achieving an average satisfaction score of 4.97 out of 5 across approximately 400 participant responses.

“One of the most rewarding parts of my role is seeing engineers return to training and watching their confidence grow,” says Bowles. “Having worked as an engineer myself, I understand the realities of diagnosing and repairing machines in the field, and the difference practical, hands-on training makes in helping engineers build both confidence and capability.”

Keeping pace with innovation

In his role, Bowles has spent considerable time at Merlo Group’s headquarters in San Defendente di Cervasca, near Cuneo, Italy, receiving extensive training on the company’s machines and technologies. Working closely with Merlo’s technical and training teams in Italy, he helps bring the latest product knowledge back to dealers across the UK and Ireland.

As new Merlo products come into the UK and Ireland market, Bowles and the wider Merlo UK team are focused on keeping dealer teams ready for the machines their customers depend on.

That includes preparing engineers for

electric models and more advanced machine technologies.

“We’re constantly developing and updating our training programmes to ensure our dealers are ready to support both current and future products,” confirms Bowles. “The industry is evolving quickly, and it’s important that engineers have the knowledge and confidence needed to support customers as new technologies emerge.”

SUSTAINABILITY ON SITE STARTS WITH POWER INTELLIGENCE

ustainability on site starts with understanding how power is actually used. For years, temporary power has followed a familiar model with a generator being selected to cover the highest demand spike, sent to site and expected to support everything that follows. It is a practical way to manage risk, but on a live or major project it can also mean engines running below their optimum load, unnecessary fuel use and avoidable emissions.

That is why the next phase of construction sites will be shaped by energy intelligence. It starts with understanding where demand peaks, where it drops and where carbon is being created through inefficient system design.

Once that picture is clear, the opportunity becomes clear and power can then be optimised in a way that supports performance, resilience and reduces carbon emissions.

For the hire industry, this is where the role now sits. We are no longer limited to supplying equipment on a dry hire basis. It now includes designing temporary energy systems around the project lifecycle, working closely with customers to manage operational risk and responding to the reality of how a site performs day to day.

We see this most clearly in the priorities our customers are balancing. They are looking to reduce emissions, enhance project efficiency and create working environments that are suitable for site teams and surrounding communities.

Each of these priorities leads to the same question: how is power being generated, stored and controlled on site?

Tower cranes bring that question into focus as their demand profile is short and intense. They require brief bursts of high-power during lifts, followed by long periods of very low demand. A generatoronly setup can meet that requirement, but it often does so inefficiently, driving fuel burn, site noise and NOx emissions.

On a recent project with Careys, delivered alongside Greener Power Solutions, we used a power set up to match the crane’s actual load profile, and installed a 318kVA / 422kWh Battery Energy Storage System, paired with a 300kVA generator to create a hybrid system. The battery responded instantly to the crane’s peak demand through its inverters. The generator operated only when the battery dropped to around 35 per cent, recharged it quickly and then switched off again.

This approach gave the site up to 800 amps of dependable, responsive power

for crane operations without a generator running throughout the working day.

This solution saved 5,052 generator running hours, reduced fuel use by 126,961 litres, cut CO2 by 409 tonnes and lowered NOx by 1,903kg. It also reduced noise and eased the maintenance burden associated with underloading.

For us, that is where the real shift is taking place. Sustainable hire is no longer just about supplying equipment, but about shaping smarter energy strategies from the outset. The Careys project shows what happens when temporary power is designed around the realities of a site, delivering measurable carbon savings alongside operational efficiency. As the industry moves forward, customers will increasingly value suppliers who can bring together insight, innovation and practical solutions in a way that supports both performance and sustainability.

CECE Congress 2026

SHARED CHALLENGES, WIDER THINKING AT CECE CONGRESS 2026

C

ECE Congress 2026 will bring senior figures from across the European construction equipment industry to London from 27 to 29 October. The main agenda will move beyond non-road mobile machinery and technical regulation to consider the wider economic, geopolitical, workforce, technology and leadership issues shaping the industry.

The Committee for European Construction Equipment CECE, represents national construction equipment associations and their member companies across Europe, giving the sector a collective voice on policy, regulation and industrial competitiveness.

Hosted by the CEA (Construction Equipment Association) on behalf of CECE, the Congress will take place at IET Savoy Place on the banks of the River Thames. More than 150 delegates are expected, including manufacturers, supply chain partners, policy representatives, associations and other senior industry figures from the UK and across the world.

The event takes place every two years and is hosted by the country of the serving CECE President. In 2026, the UK takes on that role, with Phil Layton of JCB serving as CECE President and the CEA leading the event’s delivery.

For Phil, the Congress offers something that can be difficult to find during a normal working week: the time to step

away from immediate pressures and consider the bigger picture.

He said: “The CECE Congress is one of the few occasions when the European construction equipment industry can step back from immediate business pressures and look properly at the forces shaping its future.

“Manufacturers are dealing with economic uncertainty, changing regulation, skills shortages, technology investment, global competition and a rapidly shifting political landscape. Those issues affect every business, but they cannot be solved company by company or country by country.”

The main Congress programme has been developed around the theme Create, Innovate, Inspire, reflecting the need for businesses to generate new ideas, turn them into practical advantages and continue to attract and develop the people the industry will need in the future.

Create is about finding better ways to solve problems, develop people and build value. Innovation does not always begin with a new piece of technology.

It can start with curiosity, a different perspective or the confidence to question an established way of working.

Innovate will look at how ideas can be converted into real industrial benefits, from more productive factories and stronger supply chains to better use of data and technology that delivers a genuine return.

Inspire brings the focus back to people.

The sector needs engineers, technicians, digital specialists, operators, and future leaders, as well as a stronger, more compelling case for the careers and opportunities construction equipment offers.

The speaker programme has deliberately been designed to bring in perspectives from both within and outside the sector.

Joe Nellis, Emeritus Professor of Global Economy, will examine the rapidly changing geopolitical landscape and its implications for businesses. His session will consider the impact of war and international conflict, shifting US policy, changing global alliances, trade tensions and wider political instability, as well as how organisations can respond to growing uncertainty.

Jason Bevan, former Head of Creative Development and Vice President of European Marketing at Warner Bros.

Pictures, will speak about innovation and creativity. Having led campaigns across 37 countries for major global film franchises, he will share a practical perspective on how organisations generate ideas, respond to change and create a culture in which innovation can develop, including the growing role of artificial intelligence.

Lieutenant Colonel Stewart Hill will close the first day with a keynote on resilience and leadership. Having served as a British Army officer and led troops during operations in Afghanistan, his military career was brought to an abrupt

His session will explore leadership and decision-making under pressure, as well as how individuals and organisations adapt when circumstances change unexpectedly.

Alongside the keynote sessions, the programme will include a panel featuring younger professionals from across Europe who will share their experiences of choosing a career in the sector and the factors that influenced their decisions.

The discussion will also explore what the industry can do to attract, support and retain the next generation of talent.

All conference sessions will be moderated by Riccardo Viaggi, Secretary General of CECE, who will help guide the discussion and maintain a focused exchange between speakers and delegates.

The first day of the Congress is designed to bring different experiences and perspectives into the room, challenge familiar assumptions and encourage businesses to consider whether ideas from elsewhere could be applied within their own organisations.

As Phil explained: “Our industry cannot keep looking at the same challenges through the same lens.”

The Congress will also create space for conversations that do not always occur in formal meetings or within busy work schedules. Manufacturers, suppliers, associations, policy specialists and industry partners will have the opportunity to compare experiences, discuss common pressures and build connections with colleagues from across the world.

IPAF ELEVATION UK 2026: POWERED ACCESS FRAUD AND PREVENTION

n 1 July, IPAF held its Elevation UK event at Hilton St George’s Park, the home of English football and a fitting venue as excitement was building around the 2026 World Cup. The theme of the day was fraud prevention, with sessions designed to highlight key risk factors and practical ways to mitigate them. Equipment theft, rental fraud and cyber-crime continue to cost the UK construction and rental industries millions every year, and the threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated.

This year’s Elevation UK programme featured a strong line-up of speakers and industry experts, including representatives from the Security Awareness Special Interest Group (SASIG), the National Construction and Agricultural Theft Team (NCATT), Eagle Platforms & Training Ltd, and the IPAF team.

After a networking lunch, the conference opened with a presentation from IPAF CEO and Managing Director Peter Douglas, who shared statistics on IPAF’s activity in 2025 and outlined future plans. He urged delegates to report powered access incidents and near-misses through IPAF’s Accident Reporting Portal, noting that reports can be made anonymously and help IPAF analyse data to improve safety outcomes.

The next speaker was Liz Murray, Chief of Staff at the Security Awareness Special Interest Group (SASIG). Liz highlighted that 43% of businesses had experienced some form of cyber breach in the previous 12 months and explored the significant impact cyber-attacks can have on businesses, citing examples including Jaguar Land Rover, Marks & Spencer and Knights of Old. at Northumbria Police, and Chris Piggott, Detective Sergeant and Supervisor on the National Construction and Agricultural Theft Team (NCATT), then took to the stage. Their session focused on the scale of construction hire fraud in the UK and internationally. They highlighted warning signs that a request may be fraudulent, from errors in emails to unusual customer behaviour when equipment is delivered.

They also shared practical steps rental businesses can take to reduce risk and stressed that the hire industry must do more to prevent fraud.

The session included discussion of the CESAR identification scheme, which IPAF now officially supports, and how it can help make stolen machines easier to track and trace. Police officers are also receiving basic examination training to help them identify suspicious machinery and movements.

After a networking coffee break, James Haigh, Chairman of Eagle Platforms & Training Ltd, Wendie Walke, Finance Director at Eagle Platforms & Training Ltd, and Dan Haigh, Sales Director at Eagle Platforms & Training Ltd, shared lessons learned from a real-life rental fraud. They explained how criminals posed as a blue-chip construction company to open an account with Eagle, supported by paperwork that appeared legitimate, including bank details, insurance documents and references.

Eagle also secured credit insurance. The arrangement initially appeared genuine, with the company seeming to carry out live contracts and inviting Eagle to bid for further work. However, at the peak of the activity, payments stopped and a significant amount of equipment was stolen. The session underlined the importance of robust checks, clear procedures, tracking technology and knowing where insurance cover may fall short.

The conference concluded with a panel session on the dos and don’ts of

rental fraud, hosted by Euan Youdale, Editor of Access & Rental International.

Andrew Huddleston KPM, Chris Piggott and James Haigh joined the discussion, answering questions from delegates and reinforcing the need for vigilance, collaboration and stronger processes across the sector.

After closing remarks, delegates moved into a football-themed evening of networking, including a drinks reception, BBQ dinner and penalty shootout. The evening concluded with after-dinner speaker Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock, the former Premier League defender known for his entertaining storytelling and candid reflections on football, health and personal transformation.

With England winning on the night, it was a fitting end to a memorable IPAF Elevation UK 2026. Thank you to everyone who attended, contributed and helped make the event such a success.

At the centre of the showground, the Marketplace Pavilion and café is the place to find the specialists and service providers that keep fleets running and sites moving. Due to an early sell-out, the Marketplace has been extended this year to accommodate over 60 stands.

There is always something new to look out for at Vertikal Days both inside the Marketplace and on the main outdoor showground. JCB Hydromax – A Glimpse of the Future Rebecca Phillips was lucky enough to see this incredible piece of engineering in action at RAF Wittering.

When you think of speed, you don’t think about diggers.

Endurance? Yes. Power? Sure!

But speed? Absolutely not.

So, it would be an understatement to say that I was intrigued when I arrived at RAF Wittering to see the new JCB Hydromax in action back in June.

History in the Making

Let’s wind the clocks back to 2006, when JCB put their Dieselmax to the test on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. To this day, it STILL holds the world diesel-powered land speed record, reaching an incredible 350.092 mph!

But JCB knew there was more pioneering to do.

The Hydromax programme is far more than an attempt to set a land speed record.

It is a public demonstration of JCB’s confidence in hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines and the culmination of years of research into finding a practical alternative to diesel for the construction industry.

While the Hydromax car undergoes rigorous testing before heading to Bonneville Speed Week in the United States, the real story lies behind the technology that powers it.

JCB’s philosophy begins with a simple observation: construction machines are tools designed to perform demanding tasks, often in some of the harshest environments imaginable, which presents a very different challenge to designing passenger cars. For construction machines, waiting hours to recharge simply isn’t an option.

This reality has shaped JCB’s “Road to Zero” strategy.

Rather than pursuing a single technology, the company has adopted a portfolio approach. Compact machines, where battery technology is practical, continue to expand the electric E-Tech range. Larger equipment, however, requires a different solution.

Those findings led JCB to explore hydrogen.

Initially, the company invested heavily in hydrogen fuel cell technology, producing fully operational prototype machines. Technically, they worked. In practice, however, the systems proved highly complex, expensive and difficult to package within construction equipment. Fuel cells also proved particularly vulnerable to dust, dirt and contamination; conditions that are unavoidable on building sites.

Rather than abandoning hydrogen altogether, JCB, in true JCB fashion, changed direction. Instead of using hydrogen to generate electricity through fuel cells, engineers asked a far

simpler question: why not burn hydrogen directly in an internal combustion engine?

The answer has become one of the most significant engineering programmes in the company’s history.

By adapting proven engine architecture to run on hydrogen, JCB has created machines that retain the performance, reliability and familiar operation of diesel equipment while producing zero carbon emissions at the exhaust.

Of course, hydrogen itself remains only part of the equation.

Large-scale production, infrastructure and distribution must all continue to develop if the technology is to reach its full potential. JCB is clear that governments and industry must invest in hydrogen generation through renewable-powered electrolysis if construction is to decarbonise successfully.

Nevertheless, the company’s confidence is unmistakable.

As testing continues ahead of Bonneville, Hydromax serves as more than a record attempt. It represents JCB’s belief that the future of the internal combustion engine is far from over.

Instead, by changing the fuel rather than abandoning the engine, JCB believes they have found a practical pathway towards net zero that works not just in theory, but on real construction sites around the world.

Familiar Concept, Entirely New Execution

long car, increasing its moment of inertia and making it more resistant to sudden directional changes at extreme speeds.

Meanwhile, driver Andy Green sits centrally within the cockpit, aligning both his body and the car’s centre of gravity to maximise feedback and control throughout each run.

Despite growing by 560mm compared with Dieselmax, Hydromax is approximately 10% lighter, weighing around 2.5 tonnes, depending on the quantity of hydrogen, cooling ice and onboard equipment.

Standing beside the gleaming white and green Hydromax at RAF Wittering, it is immediately obvious that this is no mere update of the record-breaking Dieselmax. While the two vehicles share a similar philosophy, almost everything else has changed.

“This is a ground-up, brand-new car,” explained the engineering team. “Every facet of the vehicle has been reworked and optimised. It’s really the evolution of more than 20 years of technical advances since Dieselmax.”

Like its predecessor, Hydromax uses two engines driving all four wheels, but almost every component has been redesigned.

Together, the twin hydrogen combustion engines deliver an astonishing 1,600hp, with power transmitted through bespoke six-speed sequential transmissions supplied by UK specialist Xtrac. Unlike conventional motorsport gearboxes, the transmissions incorporate custom-designed gearcases and additional gearing to withstand the immense torque produced by the hydrogen engines.

Four-wheel drive remains essential. While RAF Wittering provides excellent grip during testing, Bonneville’s famous salt surface is considerably more slippery, making traction one of the greatest challenges in achieving maximum acceleration.

Engineers have also carefully considered vehicle stability.

That evolution is visible in every component. Hydromax has been designed not simply to chase another FIA land speed record, but to push hydrogen combustion technology to its limits while feeding valuable engineering knowledge directly back into JCB’s production machines.

And when attempting speeds well beyond 300mph, every fraction of aerodynamic drag matters.

According to JCB’s design team, advances in digital engineering have transformed the development process compared with the original Dieselmax programme two decades ago.

Where aerodynamic refinement once required over a week for every design iteration, today’s workflow allows engineers to model changes in CAD, run computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and analyse results overnight—sometimes several times in a single evening.

That accelerated development programme has resulted in more than a 10% improvement in aerodynamic efficiency over Dieselmax.

Visually, the car features a far sharper, more sculpted profile, with crisp body lines replacing the softer forms of its predecessor. But every styling decision serves performance first.

“I was told under no circumstances could styling affect the performance of this car,” explained one member of the design team. “It had to look fantastic, but performance always came first.”

Ice Ice Baby

Perhaps Hydromax’s most fascinating feature is one that cannot be seen once the bodywork is in place.

Traditional radiators create significant aerodynamic drag because they require large volumes of air to pass through the vehicle. At land speed record velocities, drag increases exponentially, making conventional cooling systems impractical.

Instead, Hydromax relies on an ingenious ice cooling system.

Large insulated tanks positioned ahead of the front engine and behind the cockpit are packed with approximately 250kg of ice before each Bonneville run.

Rather than rejecting heat into airflow, coolant circulates through the engines before transferring that heat directly into the ice, which gradually melts throughout the run.

If calculations are correct, engineers say the final piece of ice should melt almost exactly as Hydromax reaches the end of the measured course.

Current testing at RAF Wittering is helping validate coolant flow, water-to-ice ratios and overall thermal performance before the team heads to the United States.

JCB Hydromax

Bonneville’s Changing Challenge

Although Hydromax has been designed to eclipse Dieselmax technologically, engineers acknowledge that nature may prove an even tougher opponent than outright speed.

When Dieselmax set the diesel land speed record in 2006, competitors benefited from an 11-mile course across the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Recent years have painted a different picture.

Changing salt conditions have reduced available course lengths to around eight miles, dramatically increasing the rate at which competitors must accelerate.

“To achieve what Dieselmax achieved, you’ve got to perform substantially better with this vehicle,” the team explained.

Hydromax has therefore been designed around the shortest recent course lengths, ensuring it remains capable of challenging records even if conditions fail to improve.

The Difference of 726hp

Perhaps the most remarkable engineering achievement is another that lies beneath Hydromax’s sleek bodywork.

JCB began with its production hydrogen engine, originally producing around 74hp.

Through an extensive development programme, engineers transformed that unit into an 800hp racing engine, with two installed in Hydromax for a combined output of 1,600hp.

Achieving that increase required wholesale redesign rather than simple tuning.

The production engine uses low-pressure port fuel injection, whereas the race engine adopts high-pressure direct hydrogen injection, delivering fuel into the combustion chamber at around 50 bar.

Valve operation has also been upgraded from a traditional pushrod arrangement to a double overhead camshaft layout capable of supporting engine speeds exceeding 4,000rpm.

Engineers have reduced mass wherever possible through lightweight materials and redesigned components, removing nearly 100kg from each engine while simultaneously increasing lubrication and coolant flow to cope with dramatically higher outputs.

Despite the enormous performance increase, the hydrogen combustion strategy remains fundamentally the same.

By operating with lean combustion and relatively low combustion temperatures, the engine produces virtually no carbon dioxide while minimising nitrogen oxide emissions.

Even more impressively, engineers revealed that under certain operating conditions the hydrogen engine can actually achieve thermal efficiencies slightly exceeding those of the equivalent diesel engine.

Progress at RAF Wittering

The latest round of testing at RAF Wittering demonstrated how quickly the programme is advancing.

Following an early hydrogen depressurisation issue—which engineers resolved before returning the car to the runway—Hydromax successfully completed its 14th test run.

During the run, the twin engines were intentionally restricted to 350hp each, providing a combined output of 700hp.

The car accelerated through its first three gears before reaching 177mph, after which parachutes and conventional brakes brought it safely to a controlled stop.

Engineers deliberately limited gear changes to around 3,500rpm during this phase, with plans to progressively increase shift points and engine output as confidence grows.

Much of the current development work centres on synchronising the two independent engine management systems so they behave as a single powertrain, ensuring identical torque delivery and seamless acceleration.

More than a Record Attempt

For JCB, Hydromax represents something much bigger than chasing another entry in the history books.

Every test run generates data that improves hydrogen combustion, fuel delivery, thermal management, engine calibration and control systems; knowledge that can ultimately benefit future generations of construction equipment. The car itself may one day become a museum piece, but the technology being proven at RAF Wittering has the potential to influence thousands of machines working on construction sites around the world.

Hearing from Wing Commander Andy Green, the incredible RAF pilot behind the wheel, after the Hydromax’s attempt that day, was a particular highlight. Not only was he the driver of the Dieselmax, but he also separately holds the absolute speed record with ThrustSSC. “We’re gradually winding the work up on the engines,” explained the fearless driver. “We’ve gone from never having run the complete car before to a point where it can now reliably start, accelerate, reach our current speed target and then slow down safely using the brakes, steering and parachutes.”

Hydrogen’s highly reactive nature means combustion must be carefully managed to prevent pre-ignition while still delivering maximum performance.

“It’s a slightly more complicated process than the average engine,” Green said. “We’re gradually increasing rail pressure and refining the injection timing

while developing the water injection system. All of that allows the engines to burn consistently rather than explosively.”

During the latest tests, Hydromax accelerated through first gear to around 110mph before shifting seamlessly into second and then third gear, eventually reaching just under 180mph.

“When you think about two big engines, two clutches and two gearboxes all needing to synchronise within a few milliseconds, that’s a huge engineering achievement,” Green explained. The speed itself was intentionally limited. With us media representatives positioned alongside the runway, Green chose to leave himself additional stopping distance while the engines remain in a reduced state of tune. “As the power increases, so will the speed,” he said.

While the acceleration captures attention, slowing Hydromax safely is arguably even more impressive.

The braking sequence begins with conventional brakes before Green deploys the parachute. The timing is carefully

choreographed, ensuring that if the parachute failed to deploy, maximum braking would already be underway. Once inflated, the parachute absorbs much of the energy before the mechanical brakes complete the stop during the final stages.

“This isn’t just about breaking a speed record,” Green said.

“It’s about demonstrating that hydrogen internal combustion is a genuine technology for the future.”

He believes Hydromax also serves as a showcase for British engineering, bringing together expertise from JCB, Prodrive and a network of specialist suppliers to tackle one of motorsport’s greatest technical challenges. And if Dieselmax demonstrated what diesel power could achieve two decades ago, Hydromax is making a similarly powerful statement about hydrogen combustion, and a reminder that motorsport and engineering innovation have always gone hand in hand.

Whether Hydromax ultimately rewrites the land speed record or not, its greatest legacy may be the technology it leaves behind.

Reaching New Heights

Reaching New Heights: How Specialist High-Reach Equipment Changed Construction For much of the history of construction, working at height has relied primarily on the use of scaffolding, staging and ladders.

While it is well understood how to use these essential access systems safely, working at height remains one of the greatest health and safety challenges facing the modern construction industry.

Tower cranes and high-reach excavators may dominate perceptions of working at height, but they represent only part of the story. Since the late ‘70s, an entire generation of specialist machines has quietly reshaped the way contractors move materials, provide safe access and take people out of harm’s way for some of the construction industry’s most hazardous tasks.

Building Higher, Working Harder

While ladders, staging and scaffolding are all prehistoric in origin, and construction cranes can be traced as far back as ancient Greece in around 600 BCE, the fundamental methods of working at height changed remarkably little until the Industrial Revolution. Even then, the most significant advances centred on powered hoists and cranes, rather than fundamentally changing how people accessed and carried out work at height.

By the late 1960s, the technology available to the construction industry had developed enough to start fundamentally changing the way access and working at height was undertaken.

Hydraulic systems had matured in both power and reliability, while advances in high-strength steel and vehicle engineering made the manufacture of long telescopic booms mounted on stable mobile chassis both affordable and practical. These developments allowed technologies previously confined to specialist vehicles, such as fire appliances and utility maintenance equipment, to evolve into the first generation of dedicated mobile lifting equipment for construction.

As this equipment was being developed, it coincided with one of the largest and most ambitious building programmes in modern British construction history.

Entire new towns, high-rise housing developments, power stations, major infrastructure projects and sprawling industrial complexes were all well underway to be delivered at pace to meet the demands of Britain’s booming post-war economy. Their sheer scale, technical complexity and demanding construction programmes, combined with rising labour costs, forced contractors to focus on how efficiently workers and materials moved around a worksite.

Attitudes towards working at height were also beginning to change. For centuries, the accepted approach had been to mitigate risk by relying largely on worker training, experience and established working practices, rather than by eliminating the hazards themselves. These standards began to shift following

the publication of the 1972 Robens Report, which argued that employers should take greater responsibility for proactively managing workplace risks.

Its recommendations led directly to the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, encouraging contractors to reduce workers’ exposure to hazards wherever reasonably practicable. Dedicated mobile lifting equipment provided the construction industry with an increasingly effective means of achieving exactly that.

A New Generation of Machines

Responding quickly to these changing demands, manufacturers began developing dedicated lifting equipment for the construction industry throughout the ‘60s and ‘70s.

However, the challenge extended beyond responding to commercial demand for some engineers. Shortly after retiring from the crane industry in 1969, American engineer John L. Grove witnessed a fatal scaffolding accident that convinced him the construction industry needed a safer method of carrying out temporary work at height.

The following year, Grove founded JLG Industries and developed one of the earliest commercially successful self-propelled aerial work platforms.

Designed specifically with the needs of the construction industry in mind, Grove helped to demonstrate the productivity and safety benefits of purpose-built mobile access equipment.

Meanwhile, other manufacturers tackled the challenge of moving materials more safely and efficiently through increasingly complex construction sites. French manufacturer Sambron is widely credited with producing one of the earliest telescopic materials handlers in 1957. By combining the basic functions of a forklift with the greater reach provided by a telescopic boom, the concept greatly reduced the risks associated with manually transporting materials to elevated working areas.

In 1971, Hull-based Liner Construction Equipment developed this concept further by introducing the four-wheeldrive, four-wheel-steer Giraffe. This early British machine demonstrated the growing potential of telescopic material handlers for construction applications. Recognising that potential, JCB introduced the Loadall in 1977.

Combining rough-terrain capability with a telescopic boom, it proved exceptionally well suited to the practical demands of construction sites, helping establish the telehandler as an indispensable machine for moving materials safely and efficiently.

More than four decades later, the Loadall remains one of the defining machines of the modern construction industry.

Removing People From The Hazard

By the early ‘80s, mobile aerial work platforms and telehandlers had transformed the way the construction industry approached working at height. Demolition, however, remained a far greater technical challenge. Contractors still relied heavily on explosives, wrecking balls, wire pulling and labour-intensive hand demolition, often requiring extensive exclusion zones and carefully planned collapses to protect workers and the public, with risk remaining inherently high.

Equally important was the development of dedicated hydraulic demolition attachments.

Adapting hydraulic technology already proven in the mining and quarrying industries, manufacturers developed purpose-built tools capable of cutting, crushing and dismantling structures methodically, safely and efficiently. As these technologies matured and excavatormounted hydraulic systems became more capable and reliable, they fundamentally expanded the role of the excavator as a multi-role tool carrier.

Developing a machine capable of deploying these increasingly capable attachments at height presented a significantly greater engineering challenge than simply fitting a longer boom to a conventional excavator. Supporting several tonnes of hydraulic demolition attachments at the end of an extended boom imposes enormous stresses on the machine, while the constantly changing loads generated as structures are dismantled demand exceptional structural strength, hydraulic performance and stability. Overcoming these challenges required fundamental advances in machine design before highreach excavators could be operated safely and reliably.

Much of this early innovation was driven not by the original equipment manufacturers, but by specialist engineering firms working closely alongside demolition contractors. Throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, companies such as Kocurek and Rusch pioneered bespoke high-reach boom assemblies, reinforced undercarriages and counterweight systems, steadily increasing the reach and capability of these specialist machines.

As demand for high-reach demolition continued to grow, manufacturers increasingly adopted many of the same engineering principles, introducing factorybuilt machines designed specifically for demolition. Together, these developments fundamentally changed the industry’s approach to dismantling tall structures, allowing contractors to remove workers from increasingly unstable buildings, and carry out as much of the work as possible from the safety of ground level.

Today, specialist access and lifting equipment has become so deeply embedded within the construction industry that it is easy to forget that much of this technology has only emerged within the past 50 years.

From increasingly intelligent stability and load management systems to remote operation and greater machine automation, innovation continues to reduce the need for people to work in hazardous environments, allowing specialist equipment to undertake an ever wider range of tasks once considered too dangerous or technically challenging to mechanise.

Yet perhaps the greatest legacy of the past half-century lies not in the machines themselves, but in the philosophy they represent.

For thousands of years, constructing and dismantling buildings largely relied upon the judgement of individuals working at height.

Modern access and lifting equipment has fundamentally reversed that relationship, ensuring machines shoulder the burden of risk, not workers.

Specialist access and lifting equipment will continue to evolve, but the principle behind its development remains unchanged. By removing people from unnecessary risk rather than simply managing it, these technologies have redefined one of construction’s oldest disciplines, marking one of the most significant shifts in construction methodology since humanity first began building above the ground.

Building Momentum: Dean Thornwell on LiuGong’s Growing Investment in the UK Rebecca Phillips sits down with Managing Director Dean Thornwell to look at why LiuGong was the powerhouse of Hillhead 2026.

Picture it: Glorious sunshine, a rooftop seat on one of the biggest stands at the Hillhead, looking out over the vast expanse of exhibitors and their displays.

Personally, I can’t think of a better setting to discuss the incredible rise of such a stand out company.

Few manufacturers arrived at Hillhead 2026 with as much confidence, or as much to prove, as LiuGong.

Occupying one of the show’s most engaging programmes of live demonstrations, the company used the exhibition to reinforce a message that has been gathering pace over recent years: LiuGong is no longer an emerging challenger in the UK market, but a manufacturer making serious longterm investments in people, products and infrastructure.

Visitors to the stand were greeted by one of the most comprehensive displays of equipment at the exhibition.

From compact excavators through to heavy quarry machinery, the display reflected the breadth of LiuGong’s portfolio while demonstrating its ability to support contractors working across construction, quarrying, demolition, waste handling and infrastructure projects.

Perhaps most notably, Hillhead provided the ideal stage for LiuGong’s growing battery-electric portfolio. Under the banner of its ‘Total Electric Solutions’ strategy, the manufacturer showcased not only individual zero-emission machines, but an integrated electric quarry fleet capable of operating together as a complete production solution.

To better understand the thinking behind LiuGong’s continued growth, I sat down with Dean Thornwell, Managing Director of LiuGong UK & Ireland, to discuss the company’s investment strategy, product development, dealer network and why understanding customers remains central to every decision the business makes.

Investing Beyond the Machine

Dean explained that LiuGong’s rapid expansion throughout the UK has been built upon far more than simply introducing competitive equipment into the market. Instead, the company has focused on creating the infrastructure required to support customers throughout the entire ownership journey.

LiuGong UK and Ireland Significant investment has been made in dedicated UK facilities in both Portsmouth and Manchester, providing a strong operational base that supports sales, engineering, parts distribution, technical support and customer service.

“Our investment has been about much more than selling machines,” Dean said. “We’ve built the infrastructure to support our customers, with warehouses, spare parts, service engineers and dealer partners across the country.”

That long-term commitment has become increasingly important as contractors place greater emphasis on uptime, responsive aftersales support and readily available replacement parts. Purchasing a machine is only one part of the equation; ensuring it remains productive throughout its working life is where manufacturers increasingly differentiate themselves.

Rather than focusing solely on increasing sales volumes, LiuGong has invested heavily in creating a support network capable of delivering rapid assistance whenever customers need it.

A Stand Designed Around Real Applications

That customer-first philosophy was evident throughout LiuGong’s Hillhead presence.

Rather than presenting machines as individual products, the stand demonstrated complete working solutions across multiple sectors. Equipment for quarrying, demolition, utilities, housebuilding and general construction sat alongside specialist attachments and

technology designed to improve efficiency on site.

One of the busiest areas throughout the three-day event was the demonstration zone, where visitors were able to see machines performing under realistic quarry conditions rather than static exhibition lighting. The decision to showcase equipment working in genuine applications reinforced LiuGong’s confidence in the performance of its machines while giving customers the opportunity to evaluate productivity, stability and operator visibility in real time.

The display also reflected the company’s increasingly diverse customer base. Whether contractors were looking for compact equipment suited to urban construction or larger production machines for quarrying and heavy earthmoving, LiuGong demonstrated that it now offers a genuinely comprehensive product range. The introduction of the new 909FCR compact radius excavator attracted considerable attention. Designed specifically for confined working environments, the machine combines a reduced tail swing with a factory-integrated tiltrotator, giving operators exceptional versatility on utilities projects, highways maintenance and urban construction sites where space is often limited.

Alongside it sat LiuGong’s latest wheel loaders, excavators and material handling equipment, demonstrating the manufacturer’s continued investment across conventional diesel-powered machinery while simultaneously expanding its electric offering.

Choosing the Right Technology

Electrification understandably attracted significant attention throughout Hillhead.

The 924FE battery-electric excavator proved one of the headline exhibits, having already demonstrated its capabilities on major infrastructure projects including HS2 and the Lower Thames Crossing. Joining it were the 838TE and 8110TE electric wheel loaders, the DR50CE batteryelectric rigid dump truck and the 4280DE electric motor grader.

Rather than presenting these machines as concepts for the future, LiuGong demonstrated them as practical production equipment capable of delivering a full working shift in demanding quarry environments. Watching the machines operate together, highlighted how quickly batteryelectric technology has matured. Reduced noise levels transformed the atmosphere within the demonstration area, while the absence of tailpipe emissions illustrated the health and environmental benefits increasingly sought by contractors working on sensitive sites.

However, Dean was careful not to present electrification as the only answer.

Talking about the ongoing discussion surrounding battery-electric vs diesel-powered equipment, he believes the industry should focus less on choosing sides and more on selecting the right solution for each individual application.

“It’s about communication, first and foremost,” Dean explained. “Electric machines are fantastic, but not every jobsite can use them, and it’s simply about understanding exactly what the client is trying to achieve.”

It is a refreshingly balanced viewpoint that reflects the reality facing many contractors today. While batteryelectric equipment offers significant advantages in urban environments, indoor applications and projects with strict environmental targets, conventional diesel machinery continues to play a vital role across many sectors where charging infrastructure or operational demands make electrification less practical.

For LiuGong, the objective is not replacing one technology with another, but giving customers genuine choice.

Supporting that philosophy is LiuGong’s growing engineering capability within the UK. Alongside industrial designers and product engineers based in Manchester, the company works closely with research and development teams in China to ensure customer feedback is incorporated into future machine designs. Rather than waiting years for product updates, the collaborative relationship enables information gathered from UK operators, contractors and dealer partners to feed directly into the development process.

“The voice of the customer is incredibly important,” Dean clarified. “Our engineers here in the UK are constantly feeding information back into the design process, which means we can react quickly and bring improvements to market faster.”

That approach has become particularly valuable as customer expectations continue to evolve. Whether improving visibility, refining operator controls, introducing new attachment compatibility or adapting machines to suit changing legislation, local engineering input ensures LiuGong’s products remain relevant to UK working practices. It also reflects a wider change within the organisation. Rather than designing products exclusively for global markets, LiuGong is increasingly tailoring machines around regional requirements, recognising that British contractors often work under very different operating conditions compared with customers elsewhere in the world.

Growing Through Partnerships

While engineering and product development remain essential, Dean believes building the right dealer network has been equally important in LiuGong’s UK expansion. Over the past year alone, the manufacturer has appointed three new dealer partners, further strengthening nationwide coverage. These include Dragon Plant in South Wales, Lloyd Ltd covering northern England through to the Scottish border, and Buglers serving the South West.

“We’re focused on working with dealers whose values align with ours,” Dean explained. “A successful partnership is one where both LiuGong and the dealer invest in the relationship.”

Each partner brings established customer relationships, experienced engineers and extensive regional knowledge, while LiuGong provides ongoing technical training, product expertise and marketing support.

The live quarry demonstration illustrated the wider benefits of operating an integrated electric fleet. Lower operating noise improves communication between workers, while zero tailpipe emissions create healthier environments for operators and surrounding communities alike. The inclusion of the 4280DE motor grader also highlighted the importance of maintaining haul roads.

Well-maintained running surfaces improve machine stability, reduce tyre wear, minimise fuel or energy consumption and contribute to safer vehicle movements throughout quarry operations.

Operator wellbeing also remained a clear focus across the display. Electric drivetrains naturally reduce vibration while delivering smooth, instant torque,

creating a quieter, less fatiguing working environment during long shifts. Combined with modern cab layouts, improved visibility and intuitive control systems, the result is machinery designed to maximise both productivity and comfort.

Equally important was LiuGong’s emphasis on total cost of ownership.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), regenerative braking technology, simplified maintenance requirements and lower operating costs all formed part of a wider conversation around helping customers transition towards lower-emission equipment without compromising commercial viability.

Rather than promoting electrification as a marketing exercise, LiuGong consistently framed sustainability alongside productivity and profitability— three objectives that increasingly go hand in hand for modern contractors.

Looking Ahead

If Hillhead 2026 demonstrated anything, it is that LiuGong’s ambitions extend far beyond increasing market share.

The company’s investment in UK infrastructure, engineering expertise, dealer partnerships and aftersales support reflects a business building longterm foundations rather than chasing short-term gains. Combined with one of the industry’s most comprehensive battery-electric equipment portfolios and an expanding range of conventional machinery, LiuGong is positioning itself to support customers regardless of where they are on their own journey towards lower-emission construction.

For Dean, however, the company’s ambitions remain remarkably straightforward.

When asked where he would like to see LiuGong in the UK over the next three years, he paused only briefly before smiling.

“More. Always more.”

Judging by the scale of LiuGong’s investment, the confidence of its Hillhead presentation and its clear commitment to listening to customers, that ambition appears to be more than simply an aspiration. It is a strategy already well underway.

Inside Kramp UK: How Technology, People and Partnership Are Driving the Next Chapter When it comes to agriculture, the name Kramp is known far and wide. It’s a veritable powerhouse when it comes to supporting the hardworking people of the agricultural sector.

Construction on the other hand? They’ve cultivated the ground and they’re getting ready for planting.

And I must say, I am thrilled to witness this journey from the start.

From their headquarters in the Netherlands, to their warehouse here on home soil, it is clear that Kramp is ready to sew their seeds in the construction world as well.

Before the team opened their doors to show me how Kramp operates in the UK, I was invited to see where much of the story begins – the company’s headquarters in Varsseveld, the Netherlands.

Driving through the Dutch countryside, the destination felt almost improbable. Open farmland, neat villages and quiet roads create the expectation of a traditional rural landscape rather than one of Europe’s largest agricultural and industrial parts distributors. Yet that contrast perfectly encapsulates Kramp itself. Rooted firmly in agriculture but driven by innovation, it has managed to preserve its heritage while embracing modern technology at every opportunity.

The warm welcome only reinforced that impression. From the outset, it’s obvious that the people here genuinely enjoy what they do. Whether talking about logistics, engineering or customer service, there’s an enthusiasm that’s difficult to manufacture and impossible to ignore.

Kramp’s journey has evolved through three distinct eras.

What began as a modest operation, where products were once transported around the site by bicycle, has developed into an international business capable of serving customers across Europe. Those bicycles are still around, along with the willingness to evolve.

Today, around 89% of the company’s sales are generated through its web shop, with sophisticated analysis constantly monitoring customer behaviour. If enough customers search for a product that isn’t currently stocked, Kramp doesn’t simply record the search – it works with dealers and suppliers to source it. It’s a refreshingly proactive approach that continually expands an already remarkable range.

That range is difficult to comprehend until you step inside the warehouse.

The operation runs with impressive precision. Goods arrive throughout the morning before orders begin flowing back out in the afternoon. The main distribution centre can dispatch up to 64,000 order lines in a single day, ranging from full pallet loads to something as small as a single spring.

At Kramp, no order is too large and no component too insignificant.

The company currently offers around 500,000 products for immediate dispatch, with approximately 360,000 actively published for the UK market. The remainder can still be sourced and supplied, albeit with slightly longer lead times, reinforcing Kramp’s ambition to become a genuine one-stop shop for the agricultural, construction and industrial sectors.

This was something we actually put to the test when given the opportunity to order from the web shop and see if the goods beat us home… NEWSFLASH! They did, by a good 5 days! It’s an ambition that extends to the UK too, where the company has its sights firmly set on becoming one of the country’s biggest players in the one stop shop market At one point during the tour, Klaas Peter Van De Pol, Senior Category Manager at Kramp, jokes that they’re always short of space. Looking around at what felt like an endless warehouse stretching into the distance, it’s difficult not to laugh. Yet despite the sheer scale of the building, every aisle is packed.

It’s a reminder that even facilities of this size are constantly evolving to meet growing demand.

The warehouse may be the beating heart of the operation, but it’s what happens next door that perhaps reveals Kramp’s greatest strength.

Kramp

The Technical Service Centre is where standard products become bespoke solutions. It’s also where customers come to learn. During quieter periods, the facility hosts training sessions because Kramp sees education as just as valuable as the products it supplies. As one member of the team remarked, “Every day is a school day.” It’s a philosophy that runs throughout the business.

Here, engineers configure hydraulic hoses, power packs and countless other bespoke products to exact customer requirements.

While a standard component might typically pass through several manufacturing stages elsewhere, Kramp’s focus is on producing precisely what the customer needs, when they need it. Customers in the UK are supported by technical specialists based at Biggleswade, who work closely with the Netherlands team to specify and configure bespoke solutions.

One of the most fascinating capabilities is the ability to recreate obsolete parts. Using what the team affectionately refers to as the “copy machine”, even damaged or broken components can be reverse engineered and reproduced. The equipment can manufacture around 80 external profiles and 30 internal profiles, giving customers a solution when replacement parts have long disappeared from the market.

Attention to detail extends throughout the process. Every bespoke product is photographed, documented and stored alongside technical drawings and customer specifications, making repeat orders straightforward years later.

Speed is clearly a point of pride. As one engineer put it with a smile: “It’s not rocket science, but no one does it quicker than us.”

Innovation doesn’t stop with replacement parts either. The company is actively helping customers transition from petrol and dieselpowered equipment to electric alternatives; a move that’s becoming increasingly important as emissions regulations tighten across Europe. Even something as seemingly straightforward as lighting is treated as an opportunity to improve productivity, with extensive LED ranges and specialist lighting solutions designed for everything from construction equipment to agricultural machinery operating through harsh winter conditions.

Perhaps the best insight into the company’s culture came from Klaas Peter, who summed up the mindset in a single sentence: “If someone tells me it’s not possible, it triggers me.”

After spending a day in Varsseveld, it’s easy to see why. Whether serving a lone farmer or a multinational contractor, Kramp approaches every challenge with the same philosophy: offer the right solution at the right price through its simple “good, better, best” product strategy. It’s a straightforward idea, but one that’s helped build one of Europe’s most impressive supply businesses

Walking into Kramp UK’s distribution centre, it’s immediately clear that, just like Varsseveld, this isn’t simply a warehouse.

Covering an expansive footprint and home to around 85,000 products at any one time, the operation has been carefully designed to keep Britain’s agricultural, forestry, landscaping and increasingly construction industries moving.

But despite the impressive automation, towering racking and miles of conveyor systems, one message comes through louder than any machine: Kramp’s business is built around people.

Built for speed

Opened just over five years ago, the warehouse represented a significant step up from Kramp’s previous facility, offering greater storage capacity, increased height and room to grow.

Today, it serves as the company’s primary UK distribution hub, with slower-moving items supported by stock held in the Netherlands.

“We wanted more height, more space and the ability to stock more product,” explains Leo Copping, Field Sales Manager.

“Generally, everything for the UK comes from this warehouse.”

The numbers are impressive. Around 80% of the warehouse floor space is dedicated to high-level racking, while the remaining 20% houses the small parts operation. Ironically, that relatively small area accounts for approximately 80% of all orders shipped.

first departing truck just 45 minutes later, with vehicles leaving throughout the evening to ensure next-day delivery across the UK. “It’s a very tight turnaround,” Chris Cashman, Business Development Manager for Construction. “The last order at 6pm can be picked, packed and out of the back door by 6.45.”

Automation with a human touch

Watching products move through the warehouse reveals an operation where technology and people work hand in hand.

Automated systems create custom-sized boxes, conveyor networks transport orders between multiple picking levels, and intelligent software directs products to the most efficient locations. Every parcel is photographed, weighed and checked before leaving the building.

Yet despite the high level of automation, people remain at the centre of every process.

Warehouse colleagues still physically select every component, verify quantities and carry out quality checks before items continue through the system.

“It’s a balance between people and machines,” explains Chris. “Technology gets products where they need to go, but that final check is always carried out by a person.”

The warehouse itself has been designed around the people using it. Frequently picked products are positioned at shoulder height to minimise bending and stretching, improving both speed and employee wellbeing.

“It’s about making the picker more efficient and making their job easier,” Leo says.

Artificial intelligence has become a major talking point across almost every industry, but Kramp views the technology differently from many businesses.

“The physical side of moving products will always need people. Our industry is built around relationships.”

Solutions, not simply spare parts

One of the strongest themes throughout the visit is that Kramp doesn’t see itself as simply supplying components.

Instead, the company talks repeatedly about providing solutions.

Whether it’s hydraulic hose assemblies, PTO adaptations, engineering components or bespoke configurations through its online product configurator, the aim is to remove complexity for customers.

“We always want to give customers options,” explains Chris. “It’s about providing solutions that fit their specific requirements.”

Plans are already underway to introduce workshop capabilities within the UK operation, allowing products such as hydraulic hose kits and assemblies and PTO systems to be modified or assembled domestically, reducing lead times even further.

Customers can already configure many products online, receiving engineering drawings, pricing and delivery options before placing an order.

“We want to make it as easy as possible for customers to solve their problems.”

Expanding into construction

While Kramp has long been established within agriculture, the business is investing heavily to grow its presence in the construction sector.

That means expanding product ranges, building technical expertise and helping customers discover everything the business can offer.

“We’re creating awareness of who Kramp is within construction,” explains Chris. “Our goal is to become a trusted partner that helps customers become more efficient.”

It’s an ambitious strategy, but one supported by continued investment in stock, facilities and people.

Even the warehouse has been designed with growth in mind.

Three picking floors are currently operational, while a fourth has already been planned, increasing storage capacity by around a third when brought online.

Looking across the vast building from the upper level, the available space makes that ambition easy to imagine.

When Kramp made its debut at Hillhead, it wasn’t simply another exhibition appearance. It marked a significant milestone in the company’s expansion into the UK construction sector, signalling its ambition to bring the same service,

expertise and reliability that has made it Europe’s leading agricultural parts supplier to an entirely new audience.

For a company still relatively new to the construction market, the response exceeded expectations.

“We recognised Hillhead as the premium construction exhibition in the UK,” explains Chris. “If we wanted to reach decision-makers, business owners and the people shaping the future of the industry, this was where we needed to be.”

The decision proved worthwhile. Across the three-day exhibition, Kramp welcomed a steady stream of visitors ranging from independent engineering businesses to national plant hire organisations, franchise dealers and material handling specialists. Many already knew the Kramp name through its agricultural heritage, while others were discovering the business for the first time.

“What surprised us most,” Chris says, “was just how many people already recognised the brand. Some had seen us through social media, others through word of mouth, and many simply wanted to understand what we could offer.”

The conversations quickly highlighted an opportunity.

“People were genuinely surprised by the level of service we provide,” he continues. “There was almost a disbelief. They’d ask, ‘What’s the catch?’ or ‘Is there a subscription?’ They couldn’t believe opening an account and accessing everything really could be that straightforward.”

The answer, Chris laughs, was simple.

“There isn’t a catch. It really is that easy.”

That philosophy runs throughout Kramp’s business model.

Following Hillhead, many of the businesses that registered during the exhibition have progressed beyond simply opening accounts. They’ve returned to place repeat orders, engage with technical specialists and begin building long-term relationships.

For Chris, that’s perhaps the strongest endorsement of all.

“They’re obviously finding something that works for them.”

As it was in the Netherlands, one of Kramp UK’s greatest strengths lies in its specialist technical support, particularly within hydraulics.

Leading that capability in the UK is Hydraulic Product Specialist Gene, whose 37 years of industry experience gives customers immediate access to an exceptional depth of knowledge.

“No two enquiries are ever quite the same,” he explains.

“One customer might need help identifying a simple adaptor, while another could be looking at hydraulic cylinders, valves, pumps, motors or even complete hydraulic system design.”

The role extends well beyond identifying replacement parts.

Customers frequently require guidance on thread forms, pressure ratings, compatibility and system configuration— areas where incorrect decisions can prove both costly and dangerous.

“Construction machinery operates at much higher pressures than many people realise,” Gene says. “There are different thread standards, different fitting types and a wide range of applications. Our job is to simplify that process, ask the right questions and guide customers towards the correct solution.”

And of course, behind the UK team sits Kramp’s wider European technical support network, including project engineers based at the company’s technical centre in the Netherlands. Together, they provide customers with access to expertise spanning individual components through to complete hydraulic system development.

“We’re not just supplying products,” Gene says. “We’re providing solutions.”

In my mind, one of Kramp’s most distinctive offerings is its commitment to customer education.

Through the Kramp Academy, customers can access accredited hydraulic training delivered in partnership with the British Fluid Power Association (BFPA). Unlike many in-house supplier courses, the training results in recognised industry accreditation rather than simply a certificate of attendance.

As an accredited BFPA trainer himself, Gene regularly delivers courses both at Kramp’s Biggleswade facility and on customers’ own sites.

“It’s about giving people confidence,” he explains.

“Confidence to work safely, confidence to understand hydraulic systems properly and confidence to know they always have expert support available.”

Health and safety forms the foundation of every course.

“Sometimes people think the safety section is just another box to tick,” Gene admits. “But safe hydraulics is probably the most important message we deliver. Understanding what you should and shouldn’t do protects people, protects equipment and prevents unnecessary downtime.”

The training also creates opportunities for broader conversations.

One customer, Gene recalls, attended an Academy course before later investing in a complete hydraulic workshop installation supplied by Kramp.

“It’s another example of building relationships,” he says.

“Training isn’t separate from the business – it’s part of how we support our customers’ growth.”

And let’s not forget, Kramp’s technical capability extends well beyond supplying replacement components.

Through its technical services division, customers can access bespoke hydraulic cylinder manufacture, hose assemblies, PTO shafts, workshop installations, gear pump assembly and testing, proportional valve configuration and numerous other engineered solutions.

For businesses operating in demanding construction environments, the ability to manufacture bespoke components quickly can significantly reduce costly downtime.

“Our objective is always to keep customers working,” Gene explains. “Whether that’s supplying a replacement component, designing a solution from scratch or helping them prevent failures before they happen.”

Preventative maintenance, Chris believes, represents another major opportunity within the construction sector.

“In agriculture we often see much more structured inventory management,” he says. “Construction businesses are frequently more reactive. They’re solving today’s problem rather than preparing for tomorrow’s.”

By helping customers manage stock more effectively, rationalise suppliers and simplify procurement, Kramp believes

it can deliver savings that go well beyond the price of an individual component.

Perhaps the most exciting part of the visit to Biggleswade, was the opportunity to meet the new Managing Director for the UK, Mark Rogers, who actually comes from the world of construction! Mark joined Kramp after holding senior leadership roles at a material handling equipment OEM. He also led engineering management for a leading UK rental company, and managed a sales business at MD level. Mark found Kramp’s ambition a major attraction.

“It’s a family business with huge ambition,” he says. “That’s what excited me. We want to move quickly, grow quickly and continually challenge ourselves.”

Construction represents the latest chapter in that journey.

While Kramp already enjoys market-leading recognition within agriculture, entering construction means earning that reputation all over again.

“It’s a different conversation,” Mark reflects. “In agriculture, people already know who you are. At construction shows, people walk up and ask, ‘What does Kramp do?’ That’s exciting because every conversation is an opportunity.”

That ambition is clear.

Within the next three to five years, Kramp intends to establish itself as the UK’s leading supplier of construction spare parts.

“We’re only scratching the surface,” Mark says.

“Construction is an enormous market with many different sectors. There’s still so much opportunity ahead of us.”

Hillhead Quarry once again became the beating heart of the UK’s construction, quarrying and recycling industries. From towering excavators and next-generation wheel loaders to intelligent attachments, digital fleet management systems and alternative fuel technologies, Hillhead 2026 demonstrated why it remains the industry’s benchmark event for seeing equipment where it belongs, working in real-world conditions rather than under exhibition hall lights.

Unsurprisingly, this year was the largest in the show’s history, bringing together more than 620 exhibitors from across the construction supply chain and attracting almost 20,000 industry professionals to the Derbyshire quarry. With every available stand sold, four live demonstration areas operating throughout the three-day event and all the world’s leading heavy equipment manufacturers represented, Hillhead once again reinforced its position as the UK’s premier showcase for construction plant and technology.

While electrification and decarbonisation remained prominent themes, the mood across the showground was notably pragmatic. Manufacturers focused less on distant concepts and more on delivering technologies that can improve productivity, reduce operating costs and help contractors tackle today’s challenges. From machine control and telematics to high-performance attachments, efficient powertrains and smarter service support, innovation was firmly centred on practical solutions for modern construction businesses.

CPA

While Hillhead 2026 is best known for showcasing the latest construction equipment, the Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) demonstrated that the future of the industry depends just as much on people, standards and safety as it does on new machinery.

Located in the Registration Pavilion (Stand RD11), the CPA used the exhibition to engage directly with contractors, plant hirers, manufacturers and visitors, highlighting the wide range of support it provides to an industry representing more than 1,950 member companies. Throughout the three-day event, the Association’s team was on hand to discuss key issues affecting the sector, including apprenticeships, skills development, technical guidance, health and safety, decarbonisation and the evolving regulatory landscape.

A major focus was attracting the next generation into construction plant. The CPA promoted its Stars of the Future awards programme alongside its wider careers and training initiatives, reinforcing the message that addressing

the industry’s skills shortage requires continued investment in apprenticeships and professional development. Visitors were also able to learn more about the Association’s work with government, the HSE and industry bodies to develop best-practice guidance covering everything from plant safety and operational standards to zero-emission machinery and legislative compliance.

Rather than displaying machines, the CPA’s presence centred on the policies, guidance and expertise that help keep Britain’s construction sites operating safely and efficiently.

In an exhibition packed with the latest iron, the Association provided an important reminder that productivity, innovation and sustainability rely just as heavily on skilled people, robust standards and effective industry collaboration as they do on technological advancement.

Hillhead 2026

JCB arrived with one of the most comprehensive product showcases at the event as well as reinforcing its commitment to developing equipment for the modern construction industry.

Following JCB’s 80th anniversary celebrations last year, the manufacturer used Hillhead 2026 to demonstrate the next chapter in its product evolution. Speaking on the company’s stand, Paul Swallow, Excavator Business Head, explained that the aim was to ensure visitors experienced an exhibition packed with new technology and fresh machinery.

“Everything is brand new,” he said. “We wanted to make sure Hillhead was as good as it could be for us, and it’s been a fantastic event.”

Leading the display was JCB’s new 52-tonne excavator – the largest excavator the company has ever produced.

Positioned prominently on the stand and operating in the live quarry demonstrations, the machine quickly became one of the show’s headline attractions. Of course, as it’s Hillhead, visitors had the opportunity to see the excavator working in real quarry conditions, showcasing the performance, power and productivity expected from JCB’s entry into the larger excavator market. Alongside the flagship model, JCB also introduced its new 42-tonne excavator, further strengthening its heavy equipment offering and providing contractors with additional options for demanding earthmoving, infrastructure and quarry applications.

However, the excavator range represented only part of JCB’s extensive Hillhead showcase. The manufacturer also

unveiled a new backhoe loader, the latest Sitemaster model, updated wheel loaders, new site dumpers and additions to its compaction equipment range. Together, the launches demonstrated the breadth of JCB’s product development programme and its continued investment across multiple sectors of the construction industry.

Alternative power also remained firmly on the agenda. JCB’s hydrogen-powered machine featured prominently on the stand, marking its first appearance at a major exhibition as a commercially available product. Having already demonstrated the technology during extensive development and testing, the company is now moving towards wider market adoption, offering customers another potential route towards reducing emissions without compromising machine performance.

For Paul, though, Hillhead is about more than simply unveiling new equipment.

“Meeting and talking to customers is one of the biggest highlights,” he said. “We’ve had some really good conversations over the last few days, and it’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase our new products.”

That customer engagement remains a key part of JCB’s exhibition strategy. Hillhead provides an opportunity not only to launch machinery but also to gather valuable feedback from operators, contractors and fleet owners who will ultimately put these machines to work on sites across the UK and beyond.

From its largest-ever excavator to the continued development of hydrogen-powered technology (which you can read more about in our Hydromax article), the manufacturer delivered a clear message at Hillhead 2026: investment in product development, performance and futureready solutions continues at pace.

McHale and Komatsu

Just six months after McHale Plant Sales took over Komatsu’s UK distribution, the business is already making significant progress, with growing market share, expanded sales coverage and an ambitious strategy centred on technology, customer support and investment in people.

Speaking at Hillhead 2026, Sales Director Mark Turnham highlighted two of the company’s biggest product launches.

Leading the stand was the new HM460 articulated dump truck, a complete redesign replacing the successful HM400.

“The HM460 is a completely new machine from the ground up,” said Turnham. “It features a new engine, new transmission and represents the next generation of articulated dump truck.”

Also attracting attention was the return of the PC130 conventional excavator to the UK after a ten-year absence.

“We listened to the market,” he explained. “There is still strong demand in the UK for a conventional 13-tonne excavator, so we’re pleased to bring it back.”

Beyond new machines, McHale’s focus has been on transforming Komatsu’s UK operation following the change in distribution.

“Our market share has already increased by nearly four percent in the first half of the year,” Turnham said. “We’ve also expanded our sales team to provide full UK coverage and introduced specialist product experts to support customers with areas such as articulated dump trucks, wheel loaders and machine control technology.”

That technical expertise forms part of a wider shift in the company’s sales approach.

“The market has changed dramatically,” Turnham explained.

“We’re becoming a consultative sales business rather than simply selling machines. It’s about helping customers improve productivity and demonstrating how technology can add value to their operations.”

Komatsu has set McHale a target of achieving 15% UK market share within five years, but Turnham believes the company can reach that goal sooner through continued investment in people and training.

“We’re upskilling our sales teams so they can offer customers far more than product knowledge,” he said. “They need to understand how our equipment and technology can improve a customer’s business.”

Alongside recruitment, McHale is developing future leaders from within the organisation through mentoring and additional responsibilities for younger team members.

“We’re future-proofing the business,” Turnham said.

“We want people to see opportunities to progress and build long-term careers with us.”

Despite its rapid expansion, he believes McHale’s family-

Hillhead 2026 business culture remains one of its greatest strengths.

“Our customer is always the priority,” he concluded. “If you look after your people, they’ll look after your customers. That’s the culture we’re building, and it’s what will help us achieve our ambitions over the coming years.”

Merlo

Merlo used Hillhead 2026 to demonstrate how the modern telehandler is evolving beyond simple material handling, showcasing a range of machines designed to improve versatility, productivity and safety across construction sites.

Located on stand A20, the manufacturer displayed six machines spanning its construction portfolio, from compact telehandlers through to heavy-lift and rotating models. The exhibit reflected the growing demand for equipment capable of performing multiple roles while helping contractors reduce fleet costs and maximise machine utilisation.

Among the standout machines was the Merlo P41.7 panoramic telehandler, which Construction Sales Representative, Mike Rich, described as a machine packed with features designed to tackle the challenges of modern construction sites.

“One of the unique features is our stabilising legs,” he explained. “They sit within the footprint of the machine, so there’s no extension outwards. That makes it fantastic for small, tight gaps and alleyways that you would normally struggle to get down, but this will go straight in.”

The innovative stabiliser design is particularly beneficial on

congested urban developments and restricted-access projects, where traditional outriggers can limit where a telehandler can safely operate. By keeping the stabilisers within the machine’s footprint, contractors can make better use of confined working areas without compromising stability.

The P41.7 also incorporates Merlo’s chassis levelling system, allowing the machine to compensate for uneven ground conditions by adjusting the chassis angle.

“We also have our chassis stabiliser,” Rich said. “The machine will angle itself left or right if you need to balance yourself out on uneven ground.”

While lifting performance remains central to the machine, Merlo has also focused on increasing its versatility. The Hillhead model was equipped with the factory preparation to accept a range of attachments, allowing it to carry out tasks that would traditionally require several different machines.

“This model has also got the predisposition for a work platform,” Rich explained. “It can actually take a basket on top, along with radio remote-control. You can operate it from a control box on the ground. You can operate it as a crane or as a telehandler – whichever feature you need.”

That flexibility allows contractors to switch between lifting materials, carrying out access work and undertaking cranestyle lifting operations using a single machine, reducing transport costs, improving utilisation and minimising downtime associated with changing equipment.

“It’s a multipurpose machine built into one,” Rich added.

“It’s brilliant.”

The P41.7 formed part of a broader Merlo showcase that demonstrated the manufacturer’s commitment to providing solutions for every sector of the construction industry.

Alongside the panoramic model were the compact P27.6 PLUS, the P40.13 and P40.17 PLUS stabilised telehandlers, the impressive P120.10 HM heavy-duty telehandler capable of lifting up to 12 tonnes, the flagship ROTO 50.26 S PLUS rotating telehandler, and the compact Cingo M700TD tracked carrier. Together, the display highlighted the breadth of Merlo’s portfolio, from restricted-access projects through to heavy infrastructure and large-scale construction applications.

Throughout the stand, Merlo’s emphasis was firmly on delivering greater productivity through intelligent engineering. Features such as integrated stability systems, attachment compatibility, remotecontrol operation and enhanced operator visibility all reflected the manufacturer’s focus on making one machine capable of carrying out multiple tasks safely and efficiently.

Hillhead has long been a proving ground for practical innovation, and Merlo’s display reinforced the growing role of the telehandler as a true multi-purpose machine. Rather than simply lifting materials, today’s telehandlers are increasingly becoming all-round site tools, helping contractors complete more work with fewer machines while improving both safety and operational efficiency.

Steelwrist

Steelwrist showcased its latest excavator attachment technology, with the UK exhibition debut of two, new, thirdgeneration tiltrotators taking centre stage. Visitors had the opportunity to see the new XTR23, designed for 19–23 tonne excavators, alongside the XTR15 for 12–15 tonne machines, both engineered to deliver greater precision, flexibility and productivity on site. The company also demonstrated its SQ40 fully-automatic quick coupler, which allows hydraulic work tools to be changed without the operator leaving the cab. By eliminating the need for manual intervention during attachment changes, the system not only saves valuable time but also enhances operator safety and reduces downtime.

Live demonstrations throughout the event illustrated how Steelwrist’s tiltrotator technology can transform excavator performance, enabling operators to work more efficiently, complete tasks with greater accuracy and maximise machine versatility across a wide range of applications.

Across its stand, Steelwrist reinforced its commitment to delivering smarter attachment systems that improve both safety and productivity. Its messaging focused on helping contractors increase excavator utilisation, reduce time spent changing attachments and create safer working practices, while ultimately improving efficiency and profitability on site.

Rototilt

Hillhead is always an excellent stage for a major milestone display, and Rototilt used this, and then some, when they celebrated 40 years since the launch of the world’s first tiltrotator, all while demonstrating how the technology continues to evolve for modern excavator fleets. Positioned on Stand A30, the company’s display focused on increasing excavator versatility, productivity and safety through its latest tiltrotators, quick coupler systems and integrated control solutions.

A key attraction on the stand was the RC8 tiltrotator, designed for excavators in the 23–32 tonne class. Rototilt highlighted the attachment’s ability to improve productivity on bulk earthmoving, material handling and grading applications by allowing operators to rotate and tilt attachments without constantly repositioning the machine. This reduces machine movements, improves precision and helps minimise fuel consumption on site.

Live demonstrations ran throughout the show, showcasing Rototilt’s QuickChange system and illustrating how operators can rapidly switch between buckets and hydraulic work tools while remaining safely inside the cab. The demonstrations emphasised the productivity gains achievable through faster attachment changes, as well as improved site safety by reducing manual intervention around the machine.

Alongside the hardware, Rototilt also promoted its broader ecosystem of machine couplers, work tools and integrated control technology. The company explained that its latest systems are increasingly designed to communicate directly

Air Spectrum

Air Spectrum Environmental showed why effective dust suppression is becoming an increasingly important part of modern construction, quarrying and demolition operations with an eye-catching live display at Hillhead 2026.

Located right beside the show’s upper demonstration area, the UK manufacturer showcased a range of air quality solutions operating in real working conditions, allowing visitors to see first-hand how its technology can reduce airborne dust at source. Among the highlights were a large-throw water cannon (DC40), a rotary atomiser and a high-performance misting system, each designed to minimise dust emissions while using water efficiently. The live demonstrations reinforced the importance of controlling particulate matter to improve site safety, environmental performance and regulatory compliance.

attachments in real working conditions. Rather than simply displaying equipment, MB Crusher demonstrated how contractors can transform excavators into mobile processing plants, crushing and screening material directly on site to create reusable aggregate for immediate use.

Among the highlights was the MB Demolition Pulveriser, a versatile attachment designed for both primary and secondary demolition. Capable of breaking reinforced concrete while efficiently separating rebar from the concrete matrix, the pulveriser streamlines material recovery and produces cleaner recycled aggregate, reducing the need for additional processing before the material can be reused.

The demonstrations reinforced a growing trend across construction, demolition and quarrying: keeping materials on site for longer. As disposal charges, transport costs and environmental pressures continue to rise, the ability to recycle concrete and other inert materials at the point of excavation or demolition is becoming an increasingly valuable proposition.

By reducing haulage movements, lowering fuel consumption and producing reusable aggregates on demand, contractors can improve project efficiency while significantly reducing both costs and carbon emissions.

FuelCo

FuelCo used this year’s Hillhead exhibition to showcase its latest innovations for the construction, quarrying and demolition sectors, with the launch of a new range of mobile fuel storage solutions designed to improve flexibility, security and efficiency on site. Despite the hot and dusty conditions, the event proved to be a successful one for the business, providing an ideal platform to introduce its latest products and engage with customers from across the industry.

The headline launch was FuelCo’s new mobile fuel tank range, comprising 950-litre and 2,000-litre tanks mounted on trailers. Unlike conventional trailer-mounted fuel bowsers, the new units have been designed to offer greater versatility. The tanks can be transported to site before being removed from the trailer and used as static fuel storage units, allowing the trailer to be taken away and used elsewhere.

The design also addresses one of the industry’s ongoing challenges: security. Trailer theft remains a significant issue across construction and demolition sites, often leaving operators with unnecessary costs and disruption. By allowing the tank to be separated from the trailer, FuelCo’s solution helps minimise the risk of losing both assets in the event of

theft while giving contractors greater flexibility in how they manage fuel on site.

Alongside its latest product launch, FuelCo also used Hillhead to reinforce the customer-focused approach that has helped drive the company’s recent growth.

Ace Plant

Although perhaps better known for its specialist attachment systems and plant solutions than headline-grabbing machinery launches, Ace Plant delivered one of the most practical demonstrations at Hillhead 2026.

Working alongside Dromone Engineering, the company highlighted the D80 Ball & Spoon quick hitch system fitted to an excavator operating with a dust suppression attachment.

While quick hitch technology may not initially appear as exciting as crushers or demolition attachments, it remains

Hillhead 2026 fundamental to improving productivity on modern demolition projects. Fast attachment changes allow operators to switch between breakers, pulverisers, grapples, buckets and shears with minimal downtime. On projects where machines regularly perform multiple tasks throughout the day, reducing attachment change times can deliver meaningful improvements in overall efficiency.

The D80 Ball & Spoon system also focuses heavily on operator comfort and safety. Reduced movement within the hitch assembly helps minimise vibration transmitted through the excavator, while secure attachment retention provides additional confidence when handling heavy demolition tools.

These features may not immediately attract attention, but they contribute to improved machine longevity and operator wellbeing over extended working periods.

Dust suppression formed another important aspect of Ace Plant’s demonstration. Airborne dust continues to be one of the demolition industry’s biggest environmental and health challenges, particularly in urban environments. Integrating dust suppression equipment with excavator attachment systems offers contractors a practical solution that can be deployed wherever demolition activities are taking place.

The stand also reflected a wider trend visible throughout Hillhead. Rather than focusing solely on increasing machine size or hydraulic power, manufacturers are placing greater emphasis on improving workflow efficiency. Quick couplers, attachment management systems and integrated safety features all contribute towards reducing downtime while improving productivity.

OKB Attachments

Among the products on display at Hillhead 2026, OKB highlighted its new TS1000 Tree Shear, giving visitors an opportunity to see the attachment up close ahead of its official website launch. Designed for excavators in the 10–20 tonne class, the TS1000 is capable of cutting trees up to 350 mm in diameter. While primarily aimed at the forestry, utilities and rail sectors, its versatility makes it a practical attachment for contractors working across a range of industries where safe and efficient vegetation clearance is essential.

According to Fran at OKB, the TS1000 has been developed to improve both productivity and site safety by providing a more efficient alternative to manual chainsaw operations. By enabling operators to cut and handle trees using the excavator, the attachment helps reduce manual intervention while delivering faster, more cost-effective results.

Durability was another key talking point. OKB reported that the attachment has performed reliably in service, with no failures experienced to date. As with any attachment, performance ultimately depends on correct operation and maintenance, but the company says the TS1000 has consistently delivered on its intended purpose.

Although the TS1000 had yet to be officially launched on the company’s website at the time of Hillhead 2026, it was one of the standout additions to OKB’s display and attracted strong interest from visitors looking for efficient solutions.

Hillhead 2026

While live demonstrations and heavy iron naturally dominated Hillhead 2026, Vaculug highlighted an equally important aspect of quarry and construction operations: keeping machines productive from the ground up. Exhibiting alongside Magna Tyres, the UK tyre specialist used the show to demonstrate how effective tyre management can reduce operating costs, minimise downtime and support more sustainable fleet operations.

Best known as one of Europe’s largest independent tyre retreaders, Vaculug showcased its comprehensive tyre lifecycle management services alongside Magna’s range of off-theroad (OTR) tyres designed for demanding quarrying and construction applications. Together, the companies presented visitors with a complete solution, covering everything from premium new tyres through to retreading, fleet inspections and ongoing tyre management.

For quarry operators and contractors, where tyres represent a significant proportion of a machine’s operating costs, the focus extended well beyond simply supplying replacement products. Vaculug’s circular approach to tyre management demonstrated how extending tyre life through professional retreading can lower total cost of ownership while reducing waste and the environmental impact associated with replacing large OTR tyres.

The company also used Hillhead to reinforce the importance of proactive fleet support, with specialists on hand to discuss bespoke tyre management programmes aimed at improving

Although tyres may not attract the same attention as the latest excavators or crushers, Vaculug’s presence served as a reminder that reliable ground engagement remains fundamental to efficient quarry and construction operations. By combining premium products with lifecycle management expertise, the company demonstrated how a strategic approach to tyre management can deliver measurable operational and environmental benefits across modern fleets.

Hillhead 2026 once again proved why it remains the UK’s premier exhibition for the quarrying, construction and recycling industries. CPA’s Shining Stars of the Future The 2026 awards saw recordbreaking numbers at one of the most special events of the season.

I think it’s fair to say, that there are very few events in the construction industry that have quite the same impact as the Stars of the Future Awards.

It’s not to do with the grand scale of the event, nor is it the attendee count (though it has to be said, this year’s attendees list was incredibly high!) Stars of the Future’s incredible value comes from the recognition it gives to those who are just starting out in the industry, plus giving a well-deserved spotlight to those that champion them. In a world where everything is so fast paced and money driven, taking the time to celebrate the hard work people put in can often be overlooked.

It is incredibly important to take the time to do so, especially with those just starting out.

The Heart of England Conference and Events Centre in Coventry was the venue for this year’s edition of the awards, with construction’s favourite Vlogger, Peter Haddock playing host. As always, his opening remarks were perfectly on point: “Today is all about recognising the next generation; to secure the future of construction, we have to stand up and show young people exactly what our industry is all about!

It’s about showing the next generation what they can achieve, the opportunities available to them and the careers they build.”

2026 marked a historic landmark in the events history, as this year saw 109 nominations, the highest since its birth in 2013, as well as a record-breaking attendance of over 350 guests! With 25 national, regional and special award categories, a total of 13 expert judges from across the CPA and construction plant industry and a whopping 1,600 hours dedicated to assessing entries, it set the stage for the years to come.

The two-tier judging process went through the CPA selection panel and a panel of external judges who decided the eventual winners of each category.

The external judging panel included Arran Willis of Liebherr-GB, Siôn Morgan Jones of ACOP Group, Kirsty Archbold-Laming of Southern Hoist Services, Leigh Sparrow of Vertikal Press, Graham Black of Earthmovers Magazine, Tim Brownbridge of BAM Nuttall, Georgina Williams of JCB, Dean Watkin of G F Tomlinson and Trevor Simpson of Unite the Union.

CPA’s Chief Executive Officer, Steve Mulholland introduced it perfectly: “Stars of the Future is about recognising highly talented people who are already making an exceptional contribution within their organisations. Everybody who’s been nominated, and everybody who’s won here today, should go away remembering that. The value you add to your business, and the contribution you’re making to this industry, is absolutely exceptional. Every one of you has already achieved something special simply by being here today.”

The Millennium Dome: Building Britain’s Landmark for a New Millennium A Monument to the Millennium

Designed to usher in the 21st century, few buildings in modern Britain share the ambitions, controversies and eventual success of the Millennium Dome.

Constructed on what was once one of Britain’s largest brownfield sites, extensive remediation and engineering works were required before this record-holding structure could rise above the Greenwich Peninsula. Although the Millennium Experience proved divisive, the building itself has evolved from an uncertain future into one of London’s most recognisable cultural and entertainment landmarks.

From Industrial Heartland to Brownfield Opportunity

Long before the Millennium Dome became one of London’s most recognisable landmarks, the Greenwich Peninsula was dominated by heavy industry. For more than a century, much of the site was occupied by East Greenwich Gas Works. Primarily tasked with converting coal into town gas, its position on the River Thames enabled vast quantities of coal to be delivered by ship, helping the site grow into Europe’s largest gasworks.

At its peak during the ‘60s, East Greenwich was producing around 400 million cubic feet of gas per day, making it one of the world’s largest gas production sites. However, the discovery of extensive North Sea natural gas reserves later that decade prompted the UK’s transition away from manufactured town gas, ultimately bringing production at East Greenwich to an end in 1976.

By the ‘80s and into the ‘90s, much of the sprawling industrial complex had been demolished, leaving behind approximately 121 hectares of heavily contaminated brownfield land. More than a century of gas production had polluted the site with

hydrocarbons, coal tar and other industrial by-products, presenting one of Britain’s largest regeneration challenges.

Extensive remediation works followed, with large volumes of contaminated material treated or removed, new infrastructure installed and the former industrial landscape reshaped to create a suitable platform for construction. The scheme formed part of the wider regeneration of London’s Docklands, transforming land that had lain largely derelict for decades into one of the capital’s most significant development opportunities.

Creating a National Landmark

As the new millennium approached, the Government sought to build an ambitious national centrepiece to celebrate the arrival of the 21st century. The Millennium Experience sought to inspire optimism for the future while celebrating Britain’s achievements and aspirations.

The Greenwich Peninsula emerged as the preferred location, offering a rare opportunity to combine one of Britain’s largest brownfield regeneration projects with a nationally significant construction scheme. Plans for the Jubilee Line Extension, including the future North Greenwich station, were already well underway, providing the transport infrastructure needed to support the Millennium Experience and the wider redevelopment of the peninsula. Together, these factors made Greenwich an increasingly compelling choice.

Following the incoming Labour Government’s formal approval of the project in January 1997, contractors had little more than two and a half years to transform the former gasworks into a world-class visitor attraction before its scheduled opening on 31 December 1999. More than a century of industrial activity had left the site heavily contaminated, making the compressed construction programme even more demanding.

The Millennium Dome Funded primarily through the National Lottery and delivered by the New Millennium Experience Company, the project was intended to attract millions of visitors while acting as a catalyst for the long-term regeneration of the Greenwich Peninsula.

Engineering a New Icon

With just two years to complete construction of the Millennium Experience, unconventional designs had to be explored.

Renowned architect Sir Richard Rogers proposed a vast temporary cable-supported tensile structure, which structural engineer firm Buro Happold transformed from an abstract concept into a feasible plan for Sir Robert McAlpine to construct.

Measuring 365 metres in diameter and enclosing around 100,000 square metres, the structure became the world’s largest tensioned fabric roof. Twelve 100-metre yellow steel masts supported a network of high-strength steel cables, from

which the PTFE-coated glass fibre membrane was suspended, creating a vast unobstructed internal space while using considerably less structural steel than a comparable framed building.

The masts were assembled horizontally before being lifted into position by heavy crawler cranes, allowing the cable network and roof membrane to be installed in carefully sequenced stages. The unconventional nature of the structure made telehandlers and mobile aerial work platforms particularly well suited to the project, enabling materials to be moved efficiently across the site while providing safe access for contractors working on the steelwork, cables and membrane at height.

Completed ahead of schedule in just 15 months and under budget at £43 million, the project demonstrated exceptional coordination between designers, engineers and contractors, resulting in one of Britain’s most recognisable modern structures.

The Millennium Dome

From Millennium Experience to The O2

Officially opening to the public on 1 January 2000, the project was described by Prime Minister Tony Blair as “a triumph of confidence over cynicism, boldness over blandness, excellence over mediocrity.” However, the Millennium Experience attracted criticism almost immediately.

Split into themed zones celebrating British innovation, culture and optimistic visions of the new millennium, the exhibition was criticised for its content and value for money. Visitor numbers also fell well short of expectations, attracting just 6.5 million of the 12 million visitors originally forecast and ultimately condemning the project to commercial failure.

Although the Dome had originally been intended as a temporary structure to stimulate the regeneration of the Greenwich Peninsula, its future became uncertain following the exhibition’s closure at the end of 2000. After several years standing vacant, the building was acquired by Anschutz Entertainment Group, which transformed it into The O2.

Opening in 2007, the redevelopment introduced a 20,000-capacity indoor arena alongside restaurants, bars,

retail and leisure facilities, establishing one of the world’s leading entertainment destinations. Today, The O2 hosts some of the world’s biggest concerts, sporting events and live performances, ensuring the engineering achievement that once housed a short-lived exhibition became the lasting catalyst for the regeneration it had always been intended to inspire.

Lasting Legacy

More than 25 years after its completion, the Millennium Dome remains one of London’s most recognisable landmarks. Yet perhaps its greatest achievement lies beyond the building itself. Rising from the heavily contaminated remains of Europe’s largest gasworks, the project marked the beginning of the Greenwich Peninsula’s transformation from industrial heartland to one of the capital’s leading leisure and entertainment destinations.

Today, the distinctive white canopy and twelve yellow masts stand not only as symbols of the turn of the millennium, but also of how ambitious regeneration projects can take decades to realise their full potential.

Volvo Days 2026

Volvo Days 2026: Innovation, Expertise and Operator Comfort Take Centre Stage Let me start off by saying, this isn’t my first trip to Volvo Days. It’s my second. So you would think, rather stupidly I might say, that I would come back to Eskilstuna and not be infinitely impressed a second time.

If anything, I would say I am even more so.

My first visit set the benchmark for how a demonstration event should be run. Somehow, in 2026, Volvo has managed to exceed even those expectations. It’s not simply the dancing diggers, although they were incredibly impressive to watch.

Volvo’s slogan of “Building Tomorrow” genuinely comes to life. Everywhere you look is a feast for the eyes. From enormous rigid haulers to compact electric excavators, every machine demands your attention. I found myself looking rather longingly at the R60 rigid hauler, a machine I was fortunate enough to drive during my last visit.

On a breezy day in Eskilstuna, Volvo was quite literally flying the flag of excellence.

More Than Just Machines

One of the strongest impressions from Volvo Days was that the event is about far more than simply displaying equipment.

Visitors are encouraged to speak directly with product experts rather than only sales representatives, allowing customers to ask technical questions and gain a deeper understanding of the machines. This openness has become one of the defining features of Volvo Days and is something many returning customers value highly.

With over 100 machines on display and hundreds of Volvo ambassadors on hand throughout the four-week event, Volvo Days 2026 once again demonstrated the company’s commitment to innovation, sustainability and customer collaboration while offering a glimpse into the future of construction equipment.

Volvo Days 2026 brought together customers, dealers, suppliers, employees and members of the media for four weeks of product demonstrations, technical presentations and hands-on experiences. Having hosted the event since 1971,

Volvo continues to use it as an opportunity to showcase its latest machines, services and solutions while allowing visitors direct access to the engineers and product specialists behind them. This also included partnered companies, such as Rototilt, Steelwrist, Husqvarna and many others that were all there in force, demonstrating why partnering with Volvo continues to shape the future of the construction industry.

During the opening press conference, Volvo Construction Equipment’s leadership welcomed attendees and introduced new members of the management team, including the new Head of Brand Marketing & Communication and the new Head of Region International. They emphasised that despite a challenging global market, Volvo remains focused on innovation, customer partnerships and long-term investment.

A recurring theme throughout the event was that the construction industry is undergoing significant transformation. While supply chain challenges and changing market conditions continue, Volvo believes these changes also present opportunities to develop smarter products and more sustainable solutions. The company highlighted its continued investment in manufacturing, digital technology and customer-focused services while reaffirming its commitment to construction equipment following strategic business changes in recent years.

Displays and Demonstrations

The incredible thing about Volvo is that there is never a single area they overlook. From financial services and smart solutions to demolition and construction, everything was on display at Volvo Days 2026. There isn’t a division they aren’t proud of or a technology they don’t want to talk about.

It’s like being a child in a sweet shop; you simply don’t know where to start.

You’d think standing amongst these giant yellow machines, towering like dinosaurs of old, would feel almost prehistoric. And yet everything about the event is inherently modern. Even though there are carefully preserved pieces of historic machinery that Volvo is clearly proud to showcase, the focus is always on the future.

Innovation is everywhere

That is especially true when you look at the new electric range and its ever-growing capabilities. Hearing about fully electric, zero-emission construction sites already operating in countries like Germany provides a genuine glimpse of what’s possible. It offers a pathway to the future, one that I hope more of us embrace sooner rather than later.

Of course, this is a showcase, and naturally Volvo is presenting its machines at their very best. But one of the highlights of the day came away from the demonstration arena.

Volvo Days 2026

We drove past the construction site for Volvo’s new excavator factory, where Volvo excavators were quite literally building Volvo’s future. There was something wonderfully circular—almost poetic—about watching the machines create the very facility that will produce the next generation of excavators.

More importantly, we weren’t just seeing polished demonstrations. We were watching these machines at work on a genuine construction site, carrying out real tasks in real conditions. It’s not something you necessarily expect from a press event, but it was a genuine privilege to witness. It was perhaps the most authentic demonstration of their capabilities all day.

The Next Generation EC560 Hybrid Excavator

My personal highlight was the preview of the new Volvo EC560 Hybrid excavator, due to launch next year.

Speaking with one of Volvo’s product specialists, I learned that the machine introduces Volvo’s latest integrated Co-Pilot system. Unlike previous models, which required two separate displays, the EC560 combines all functions into a single monitor, reducing distraction and creating a cleaner, more intuitive operator experience.

Although hybrid technology is already established within this machine class, the EC560 continues to build on its benefits.

The hybrid system recovers energy when the boom is lowered, reducing fuel consumption and improving overall efficiency.

Rather than focusing solely on the initial purchase price, Volvo’s engineers emphasised Total Cost of Ownership. While hybrid models may require a higher initial investment, reduced fuel consumption and lower operating costs throughout the machine’s working life can provide significant long-term savings.

The EC560 also benefits from an increased counterweight and higher hydraulic pressure compared with the EC550, providing improved stability, greater lifting capability and enhanced digging performance.

Experiencing the A45 Articulated Hauler

Another standout machine was the new Volvo A45 articulated hauler, a machine I was lucky enough to do a ride along across a 15 minute course of various terrains.

According to Marten, one of Volvo’s product specialists, the A50 is his favourite machine, largely because of its fully hydraulic suspension system. Unlike conventional suspension, the hydraulic system delivers exceptional ride comfort across all terrain, allowing operators to travel quickly over rough ground while remaining comfortable and in control.

But this innovation began on the A45, and from inside the cab I can absolutely see why.

The demonstration course highlighted exactly what the machine was capable of. Travelling with a full 22-tonne payload across twisting gravel roads, steep gradients and deliberately uneven surfaces, the A50 remained remarkably composed. The suspension effortlessly absorbed severe bumps while maintaining stability, demonstrating just how capable these machines are in demanding site conditions.

Operator comfort has clearly been central to the design.

Visibility has been improved through an enhanced frontfacing camera system, particularly when the cab is tipped, giving operators greater confidence around the machine.
