Joyce Manor Not Another Pop-Punk Headache

Kelsey Walker Arts & Entertainment Editor A string of Converse-clad teens lined up outside for the sold-out Joyce Manor show at Shakas Live on Feb. 11, anxiously awaited to get their hands marked with the signature black X’s signifying their youth. Compiled by Barry Johnson (vocals, guitar), Chase Knobbe (guitar), Matt Ebert (vocals, bass) and Jeff Enzor (drums), Joyce Manor has collected a cult following among teens and twentysomethings trying to navigate the years of early adulthood. Catchy guitar riffs and gut-wrenchingly relatable lyrics provide the base for their four studio albums, mostly composed of under-two-minute tracks, leading up to their latest release, “Cody.” Mannequin Pussy opened the night, fronted by lead singer Marisa Dabice. A mix between grunge-rock, shoegazer and punk, the band played powerfully and unabashed despite the audience’s obvious unfamiliarity. At one point, someone tossed a bra to

Dabice during their set. Not skipping a beat, she hung the garment around her neck. “Did the person who threw this plan on getting it back?” she asked. Musically, Dabice’s tone was one of bitterness, and the lyrics echoed feelings of a mid-twenties identity crisis. “I feel so separated from what I thought I’d be and what I am,” she sings on “Denial.” Following Mannequin Pussy, AJJ seemed to be better known by the crowd. Shortened from Andrew Jackson Jihad, AJJ exhibits a folkpunk sound chock-full of sing-along lyrics. Frontman Sean Bonnette even played an acoustic guitar. Themes of self-loathing and despair were evident in crowd-favorite, “Heartilation.” “I wanna break apart my heart / Douse it in Gasoline / ‘Til the fire burns clean / Then flick a cigarette / Like that movie ‘Con-Air.’” The energized crowd sang along loudly to the fast-paced song, bobbing their heads and building momentum. After nearly an hour-long set and

followed by immense applause, AJJ left the stage. The crowd grew larger as time grew closer to the main event. As the lights dimmed and Joyce Manor took the stage, stragglers from the bathroom ran and pushed their way into the crowd. Without saying a word, they opened with “Beach Community,” a guitar-heavy, melodic hit from their self-titled, debut album.

“What can you do when you’re not getting sober? / It’s hard to admit but you’re always feeling alone,” Johnson sang. “A few miles down / As the streets count backwards / I realize it’s true / Everything reminds me of you.”

'Valve' Replacement Nathan Laplante Contributing Writer Valve Corporation, the company behind the popular online game marketplace “Steam," has recently revealed that they fully intend to replace their controversial Greenlight program with a new service called “Steam Direct." The Steam Greenlight Program was launched in 2012 and was put forth to give independent developers a chance to pitch their games with the hope of being put on the Steam storefront. Through the Greenlight process, developers would pay an initial $100 fee for the posting, and then Steam users would then vote on the games that they liked. Games with the most votes would become available for purchase on the online marketplace. While this method has produced several commercially and critically successful “indie” games, such as the critically-acclaimed side-scrolling platformer “Broforce," the process was notorious for lacking reasonable standards of quality control. This led to the marketplace becoming saturated with broken, low-quality and in many cases copyright-infringing games. Perhaps the most notable example of Greenlight “shovelware” was the infamous “Slaughtering Grounds,” developed by a group then known as “Digital Homicide.” "Slaughtering Grounds" was criticized for being developed almost entirely from pre-made assets purchased from an online store in a practice commonly known as “asset-flipping." The developer also came under fire for it’s use of uncredited Google stock imagery for the game’s effects. Practices such as these were fairly common within the Greenlight program, as they resulted in cheap and easy-to-develop products. This lack of quality control within the Greenlight program drew criticism from both users and game journalists alike, and it appears that this backlash is at least partially responsible for the implementation of Steam Direct. see VALVE, page D1

Learn How to Live Off-Campus

Erin Sudek Assistant News Editor

For anyone who has had to go through the daunting process of finding off-campus housing, it can help to have a little bit of guidance. A seminar about how to begin the intimidating search for off-campus housing and information on the basics of living offcampus was held for students in the Scotland House Community Room on Feb. 13. The presentation was organized by the Off-Campus Student Life Office, the Student Government Association and Rent Ready Norfolk. Rent Ready Norfolk is a city government program aimed at helping educate landlords and renters, as well as providing resources to improving the housing quality in Norfolk. “This is during the same period as the return housing application process where students can submit their

housing applications for the fall, so we thought we’d host a few sessions within the residence halls for students so that they can learn a little bit of information about living off campus and make a decision about whether they want to live on campus or off campus next year,” Abby Kindervater, coordinator for Off-Campus Student Life, said. Kindervater and Emily Diehl, student ambassador of Off-Campus Life, walked students through a general overview of off-campus living and helped students determine whether they were ready to live off-campus or not. The search for a house or apartment may seem daunting, but the presentation covered many free resources that can make that search much easier. The university provides an off-campus housing search to view listings, as well as create and view roommate

profiles. There are even filters that can tailor the search to specific preferences to help students find their perfect roommates. Students may also look on Facebook pages or other housing sites, but the presenters warned about rental scams and advised students to inspect the property before signing anything. While looking for a neighborhood, explore the area and use resources like the university’s crime map or the “LiveSafe App." These are great ways to evaluate the area to see if it would be comfortable and safe enough to live in. They also highlighted the important aspects that students must be thinking about when getting ready to live off campus, like budgeting, safety, the increased responsibility of living in a house and other details that differ from living on-campus. They suggested using budgeting

apps like “Intuit Mint” or “Splitwise” to help keep utilities, rent, insurance, groceries and other expenses organized. Roommate agreements, which can be provided by the Off-Campus Student Life office in Webb Center, are especially important when living off-campus because of the lack of overnight guest policies and the shared responsibilities that must be done such as cleaning, mowing the lawn and supply kitchen tools and other essential home items. The presenters also suggested that when renting, students should give an effort to be good neighbors and be part of the community by partying smart, attending civic leagues and being respectful by taking out the trash at appropriate times and parking smart.

ISPMP Pairs up With TCC for Computer Donations Emily Rogers Social Media Director Students and staff will be able to drop off used computers to be refurbished and donated as part of the Information Systems and Project Management Professional’s computer recycling event this semester. ISPMP recently paired up with “Computers for Student Success” to collect computers and computer parts for low income Tidewater Community College students. “Computers for Student Success” is a program that was created at Tidewater in 2009 by the TCC Computer Club. According to their website, their goals for the program are “to provide computers to deserving low income TCC students and non-profits within the community, while providing hands-on experience to club members” About 1,800 computers are donated to the program each year. The only fee students have to pay is $25 when picking up their refurbished computer. ISPMP has set a goal of collecting 40 computers over the course of the event to donate. In the first few days alone, they have already had three computers donated. “People have the opportunity to get rid of their old computers and help out people in the community who can’t necessarily afford a computer,” Elise Oborny, President of ISPMP, said. Donations are being accepted until April 1 and the donation box is available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.to 4 p.m. in Constant Hall, Room 1066. “We know students have old and unused computers that they don’t want and don’t know what to do with them,” Oborny said. Once ISPMP’s computer recycling event is finished in April, students are encouraged to contact “Computer for Student Success” and donate their unused computers directly to the program. For more information on donation to the program, contact Elise Oborny at eobor001@odu.edu.

Joyce Manor Plays Sold-Out Show at Shakas Live Continued from front Joyce Manor has a way with describing the love-tortured feelings you get when walking home from late-night parties that don’t end the way you’d hoped. It took no time at all for the audience to thrash along, climbing on top of one another to crowd surf and shouting along to every word. Continuing to play tracks from their debut album, “Leather Jacket” picks at friends who seem to turn into strangers after time spent apart. “In your new leather jacket, you’re somebody else / And it’s not nice to meet you in a fortress of self,” Johnson shouted. “Thanks to your new leather jacket, we’re nobodies now.” The same angst-ridden themes carry through to tracks from the band’s latest album, but are inserted with

notes of inspiration on tracks such as “Eighteen.” “At eighteen / Life’s a bad dream / Then you wake up,” Johnson belted out. “Just find something to do / And then do it.” Though simplistic and brash, the words are stingingly truthful. It’s not all roses, though, and Johnson doesn’t hold back the pessimism for long. On “Last You Heard Of Me,” he can’t shake seeing the ending before things even begin. “Digging through your purse for matches / When for a second our eyes meet / And in the moment I see everything / Start to finish, sad defeat / Shivering, lying naked naked next to you / And that’s the last you heard of me.” The lyrics are strikingly poetic, allowing the listener to visualize the

entire scenario. The song pushes past the typical two-minute or less mark for the band, which may be why it’s able to form a story better than others. “I don’t want [a song] to end before it’s satisfying, and I don’t want it to go on longer than necessary,” Johnson told Northern Transmissions last September. After a brief exit from the stage, the band came back for an encore and closed out the night with “Constant Headache,” the ultimate anthem for bittersweet failed relationships that you can only blame yourself for ending. “You were drunker than high school, self-conscious and sweet / I never ever felt so cool disguised in your sheets / But I’m a constant headache, a tooth out of line.” The lyrics express the inability to shake those nagging feelings of self-

loathing. As the band gave it their all onstage, people continued to get tossed into the air. During the chaotic finale, a seemingly-intoxicated girl was thrown onto the stage, knocking down Johnson’s mic in the process. He walked over to another and continued, but the bouncers were too busy keeping track of others in the crowd to notice. “Having sex in the morning, your love was foreign to me / It made me think maybe human’s not such a bad thing to be / But I just laid there in protest, entirely f---ed / It’s such a stubborn reminder, one perfect night’s not enough.” The girl moved towards Johnson and grabbed the mic, attempting to sing along with him. Unentertained, Johnson moved to the opposite side of the stage, finished the song and

walked off after a quick, “Goodnight.” The show’s abrupt ending after “Constant Headache" echoed the bittersweet feelings of the song, and I couldn’t help but wonder if they would have played another had the girl not interrupted. Despite the unexpected ending, the energy of the night remained even as the half-drunk crowd poured out of the venue and into the streets. That’s one of the incredible things about music – even after it stops, the emotions still find a way to linger. Joyce Manor’s raw, unfiltered sound hasn’t lost steam since their debut, and I don’t think we’ll see them slowing down anytime soon. Their tour wraps up this April, closing out in their home-state of California.

Five Travel Hacks for College Students

Seena Khalil Contributing Writer

Matt Damon as William Garin. Courtesy Legendary.com

'The Great Wall' Isn't So Great Ross Reelachart Technology Editor It’s no secret that China is an upand-coming global superpower (if not one already), and in the world of movies its presence is just as tangible. No studio working today would dare make a mega blockbuster without China’s money in mind. With “The Great Wall,” American audiences now get to see what it’s like when a studio makes a blockbuster with China in mind first, and Western audiences second. Directed by the amazing Zhang Yimou, “The Great Wall” tells the story of a pair of vaguely western mercenaries (Matt Damon and Pedro Pascal) who attempt to steal the secret of black powder from the East. After being captured, they get embroiled in the centuries-long siege at the Great Wall, which was built to hold back a never-ending horde of reptilian alien monster creatures. All things considered, “The Great Wall” is a pretty mediocre action and monster film. The monsters, called the Tao Tei, are rendered with fairly low fidelity CGI and their nonhumanoid shape doesn’t allow them to get into the kind of cool hand-tohand combat that’s usually expected of Chinese action films. Watching the soldiers fight is suf-

ficient, if only because they’re straight out of an anime, right down to the color-coded groups that comprise it ranks. There’s the red Eagle archers, the black Bear foot soldiers, the orange Tiger siege troops, purple Deer Calvary and the all-female Crane troops who fight with lances and bungee cords. It’s neat watching all of these Chinese soldiers perform their duties fighting the Tao Tei, and therein we find the actual reason for this otherwise unremarkable movie. Similar to how the early “Transformers” movies tend to espouse the virtues of the American military, “The Great Wall” espouses the virtues of working together and self-sacrifice, not in the way, say, the Avengers come together to work as a team, though. The film goes to great lengths to say how individual gain and greed are bad, right down to being the reason the Tao Tei exist and the qualities Matt Damon eventually turns his back on as he becomes the hero. Yet, the most glorious shots and sequences in the movie are when dozens and dozens of same-dressed and color-coded Chinese soldiers are working in lockstep with clockwork precision. The subtle fingers of China’s State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT) are at work in this film.

“The Great Wall” is by no means a work of blatant propaganda, but it can see the word from where it’s standing. Matt Damon may be on all of the posters, but he’s barely the hero. That title would go to Jing Tian’s Line Mae, commander of the all-female Crane troop. It’s her decisions and narrative that drives most of the movie, and Damon is mostly there to serve as the audience’s translator and point of view. If Damon is supposed to be the audience's surrogate in the fantastic Chinese setting, then the film is also saying that we should be amazed by everything Chinese–that’s roughly 50 percent of what Damon does in the movie. There are multiple times where he and Pedro Pascal are dumbstruck by the science and technology of the Chinese, and by their glorious teamwork and dedication. It’s obviously there, but it’s also hidden just well enough beneath the more general and universal heroic virtues of working together and unselfishness. While “The Great Wall” does its best to wrap-up its subtly Chinese nationalistic themes under an action movie veneer, it can’t quite hide all of its intentions, mainly because the action is just not as good as it could be. It’s not a bad movie, it’s just kind of forgettable. As a moment in film and global media culture? Maybe it’s something more.

The perfect time to travel, before entering the "real world," is in college. Summer, winter and spring breaks do not exist when you enter the corporate workforce, so take advantage of it while you can. Traveling and exploring the world does not have to be a scary experience, nor does it have to empty your pockets. We’ve compiled travel hacks to help you travel the world smarter and cheaper. 1. StudentUniverse.com Student Universe is a website that provides students with special rates on flights and hotels. This website is dedicated to making traveling cheaper for students to see the world. The website was launched in 2000 and has grown tremendously over time. Student Universe has contracts with many world-class partners and airlines to guarantee the best prices for its specific demographic of students. 2. Roll Clothes Instead of Folding Save money on expensive baggage fees by rolling your clothes instead of folding them. Rolling your clothes can make a big difference in the number of items you can fit into your luggage. It takes up less space than folding, which allows you to fit more and minimize your baggage. Carry-ons are usually free, so if you’re traveling on a short trip it is ideal to just take a carry-on. Not only will you save money, but you may also save yourself from the headache of losing a checked-bag. 3. iTranslate App iTranslate is a free app that is great for when you’re traveling to a foreign country. The app allows you to automatically translate anything into your desired language. Not only can you translate the text, you can also play the audio of what you are trying to say. Not everyone can learn an entire

@maceandcrown

language before traveling to another country, so this is a great tool to help communicate with the locals. It is especially important for students to be able to communicate and get around a foreign country properly. This app was created in 2009 and has had over 50 million downloads since then. 4. HOSTELWORLD App HOSTELWORLD provides cheap housing accommodations for young travelers. There are hostels all over the world, with prices starting as cheap as $7 a night. A hostel is perfect for young college students wanting to travel the world on a budget. The setups vary, but the most common resemble a dormitory. Because it is most common among young travelers, it is easy to meet new people and make connections from around the world. HOSTELWORLD provides reviews for more than 33,000 properties in over 170 countries. 5. MAPS.ME App MAPS.ME is another free app you can download on your mobile device that will allow you to have access to a map no matter where you are, without the need of internet service. Typically, map applications provided on cell phones do not load when there is no service. MAPS.ME is great for young travelers who do not want to hike up their phone bill with roaming charges but still want to be able to find their way around. Online maps are easier to use than the paper maps and allow you to see newly built roads, zoom in and more. Another great feature of this app is that if you do use it while online, you are able to share your location. This tool comes in handy for young travelers who want to keep their family and friends updated on where they are, especially if traveling alone. It allows them to see exactly where you are located and follow you as you travel.

Kim Bering Staff Writer The red carpet fashion at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards was filled with daring, subtle, political and classic ensembles from several prominent designers. Some celebrities decided to play it safe with form-fitting evening gowns and classic suits, while others came clad in gold masks, satin track suits, leather and metallics. Singer-songwriter Adele made a statement during her acceptance speech as well as with her fashion. She arrived in a long sleeved Givenchy Couture gown by Riccardo Tisci. The gown was custom made with satin, silk and Swarovski crystals. The emerald green hue, micro-pleating and unique lattice work on the bodice made for an elegant presentation. Both of singer-songwriter Beyoncé’s ensembles were hits. She made a dramatic entrance for her stage performance with a gold crown to reaffirm herself as “Queen Bey,” complimented by a sequined floor length dress. Later in the evening, she transitioned to a plunging neckline body-con gown, covered in fiery red sequins. Beyonce with fellow Grammy Award-winner, Chance the Rapper. Courtesy PopSugar. A more daring look was worn by singer Halsey. Rather than wearing a floor length gown, she opted for a satin cobalt blue open jacket and matching pant tracksuit. Both pieces were loosely fit. Designer Christian Wijnant created the inspiring ensemble, but Halsey ditched the undershirt and braved the red carpet with her jacket open instead. She appealed to the individual style of red carpet fashion. For a more classic approach to red carpet wear, singer Charli XCX arrived in a solid, bright red gown by Vivienne Westwood. The dress was strapless, had a deep sweetheart neckline, subtle stitching and a slightly tapered

hem in the front that revealed a darker red pointed heel. The stunning gown matched the red carpet and still made a statement with its elegant simplicity. Country singer Kelsea Ballerini also wore a romantic dress. The fitted sheath gown, adorned with pastel colored 3D fabric flowers and a lengthy train, was designed by Ines Di Santo. The princess gown gave Ballerini a dreamy look but was later swapped out for a colorfully embellished pantsuit by Nicholas Jebran for her stage performance with singer Lukas Graham. The award show got political with Joy Villa’s controversial dress that read vertically, “Make America Great Again,” designed by Andre Soriano. It even read “TRUMP” in silver sequins along the train. This blue mermaid fit dress was designed to show support for the president, and according to Villa, love. “You can either stand for what you believe or fall for what you don’t. Above all make a choice for tolerance and love,” Villa said on social media. Finally, one of the most outrageous fashion moments at the Grammy’s was CeeLo Green’s, golden body costume, nearly replicating the Grammy’s statue. A golden metallic gown complete with gloves and a face mask covered him from head to toe. Trying to reinvent himself with his new identity as “Gnarly Davidson,” he made a bold fashion statement. Twitter user @ItsTheReal even went a step further by tweeting, “Cee-Lo showed up looking like an angry Ferrero Rocher.” The Grammy’s fashion always breaks the mold of habitual red carpet apparel, offering an individual approach to creativity expressed through fashion. The 59th Annual Grammy Awards certainly presented a stunning variety of colors and ingenuity. Whether made for a political statement or simply to be a nicely fitted dress, the red carpet fashion was inspiring.

The Regrettes

‘Feel Your Feelings Fool!’

Courtesy Warner Bros. Record

For any female warrior wanting to attack the patriarchy one angsty song at a time, “Feel Your Feelings Fool!” is the perfect soundtrack to your tirade. An ode to feminism and teenage angst, The Regrettes have channeled ‘90s garage rock into a modern tale of brute honesty. Lead singer Lydia Night holds nothing back. Her raw sound gives the band a punk edge that resembles Courtney Barnett. The album, released on Jan. 13, has quickly become a feminist staple. “Feel Your Feelings Fool!” opens with the track “I Don’t Like You.” A quick, three-minute-long track, the song presents The Regrettes in a vulnerable light. As Night sings, “You say hello, I want to die / You say I do

and I think I'm gonna cry,” she sets a morbid tone for the start of the album. Following “I Don’t Like You,” the second track, “A Living Human Girl,” transforms the album from a sob story to an unashamed punk condemnation of stereotypes. Lyrics such as, “An a— full of stretch marks and little boobs / A nice full belly that's filled with food,” make sure the listener fully understands how outdated gender norms are. The song is a full-on feminist punk explosion and is easily one of the best on the record. One of the last tracks off the album, a two-minute anti-female stereotype anthem, “Ladylike / WHATTA B—H” upholds any claims made earlier in the album. The track starts off with with a simple message on how females

are supposed to act. “Be soft, be shy, read a book and learn to cook / Be nice, be dumb, clean the floors and wash your pores,” Night sarcastically sings. Quickly turning the tables, Night goes on, “I heard that girl Lydia is a total f—king b—-h / I heard that she's a feminist so she must not shave her pits,” exemplifying the irony in feminist stereotypes. “Feel Your Feelings Fool!” is 15 tracks of female-empowering rock. Defying all gender norms and female expectations, the band sings about the downsides to shaving, the truths about breakups and how little they care what other people think of them.

SOHN ‘Rennen’

Three years after the release of his debut album, SOHN (Christopher Taylor) has proven he can only go up from there. “Rennen” is complex, intimate and just damn good. It’s a prime example of what electronic artists can achieve. “Rennen,” which translates to “run” in German, dropped on Jan. 13. Taking on a more Banks-esque R&B sound, SOHN has become more low-key since his debut release, “Tremors.” Hit single “Conrad” is made for the radio. It’s an upbeat track that's easy to sing along to. As SOHN repeats, “I can feel it coming / We can never go back,” the music gives the song an ominous feel. As fun as it is, “Conrad”

is just a hint at the complexity SOHN produces on “Rennen.” The repetitive lyrics and radio-ready sound gives the song little depth and portrays SOHN as somewhat of a sell-out. Opening track “Hard Liquor” sets a morbid tone. The song deals with addiction and features a strong female lead. “She’s never been turned away / don’t care for what people say / she’ll never see a rainy day,” he sings. “Hard Liquor” gives the initial impression of depth and honesty. Other tracks like “Rennen” and “Primary” show the wide range SOHN has. “Rennen” is backed by piano as SOHN croons, “My fate don’t mean a thing.” The ability to take dif-

ferent instruments and sounds and put them together in one song is hard, but the artist pulls it off effortlessly. “Signal” shines through production. It’s synth and use of various percussion instrumentals make the song interesting and refreshing. SOHN’s voice is backed by autotune of different pitches. The longest track on the album, “Signal” is also one of the most intricate. Overall, the production of “Rennen” is wicked. It’s layered, complex and takes electronic music to a whole new level. The music is only a vehicle for SOHN’s voice, though, and pushes it to the forefront. “Rennen” is the perfect electronic album to start 2017 with.

Chief Keef

‘Two Zero One Seven’

Courtesy RBC Records

The Mace & Crown

After an underwhelming 2016, everyone doubted Chief Keef ’s ability make 2017 his year. “Two Zero One Seven” may just be the saving grace he needed. “Two Zero One Seven” is a weird collection of drill hits and introspective thoughts. Chief Keef has the rare ability to make his voice its own instrument. Sometimes he’s yelling, but on tracks such as, “Fix That,” he relies on autotune to get his message across. At first listen, it sounds a bit scattered, but the album is a collection of well put together ideas and concepts. The album is full of one-liners and short quips. Lines such as, “The diamonds in my ear giving me a brain freeze,” on “Trying Not to Swear”

give the album a quirky edge. In “Hit the Lotto,” Keef raps, “You can’t stand me? Get you a stool.” Keef has no time for cheap radio hits. On “Two Zero One Seven” he has managed to produce music that’s busy and loud without being obnoxious or confrontational. He’s not afraid to mix sounds and try new things–lucky for him, it paid off. “Two Zero One Seven” opens with “So Tree.” The track is the safest on the album and is easily the least exciting. This changes quickly when second track, “Fix That” introduces a well-defined beat and features lines about smoking in rehab. The rest of “Two Zero One Seven” is full of brazen lyrics and sounds.

@maceandcrown

@maceandcrown

In “Knock It Off,” Keef manages to rhyme “bags of money” with “Led Zeppelin.” Aesthetically, the album is almost an immature mash up of cartoon-like voices and lyrics. The creative feeling pays off, though, which makes it one of Keef ’s more distinctive albums. The songs themselves vary in volume and production value. The seemingly unmastered “Two Zero One Seven” may deter listeners at first, but the album is full of hits. Keef isn’t afraid to use autotune to his advantage and his unique production skills make the album different and all around enjoyable to listen to. It’s safe to say: Sosa’s back.

Should've Been Snubbed

‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’ 2016 | PG-13 | 101 min.

Constantly in and out of foster homes, Ricky Baker (Julian Dennison) hasn’t been able to stay out of trouble long enough to find a home. Disappointment comes to Ricky when he is placed in the care of an older couple living in the New Zealand countryside. Taking on the roles of guardianship are “Aunt” Bella and her reclusive husband, Hic (Sam Neil). Initially warming up to the new home, Ricky learns that child services is returning to take him away. This forces the child to fake his death and run away into the New Zealand forest. Not far behind is Hic, who decides

to go on the run with Ricky. The two find themselves the subject of a nationwide manhunt by the police and the militant child services agent hell bent on finding Ricky. In the words of Sam Neil’s Hic, “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” is nothing short of “Majestical.” Reminiscent of Wes Anderson’s filmmaking style, the film moves like a bizarre children’s story meant for adults. Writer/Director Taika Waititi’s script contains a frantic and high scaled spirit that is truly hard to shrug off. Much of the jokes land with precision and only add to the fantastic world Waititi

has built. Much of the dialogue in this sharp script is handled with passion and care by the film’s leads. Neil is able to handle his character’s gruffness in a way that still makes him accessible to the audience. Meanwhile, Dennison treats his character moments and comedic timing just about flawlessly. Highly entertaining and almost never with a dull moment, “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” is a sweet-natured and crafty adventure. This film is available on Hulu

‘White Girl’

2016 | Unrated | 88 min.

When Leah (Morgan Saylor), a university student, moves into her new apartment with her best friend, she finds anyone willing to sell her drugs. This leads her to Blue (Brian Marc), a drug dealer she begins a sexually charged relationship with. The two discover through a night of drug dealing in the city that they can earn more by selling drugs to rich club hoppers. Despite warning from his friends, Blue decides to ask for a kilo of cocaine from his aggressive supplier. Although things start to go well for the couple, things take a turn when Blue is arrested. This leaves the naïve

and drug addled Leah with a kilo of drugs from a dangerous man expecting a profit. Instead of simply returning the drugs to Blue’s supplier, Leah decides to continue selling the drugs in order to raise money for a lawyer for Blue. This brings trouble to the drug addicted girl as she soon begins to lose control of the situation. The raw and immersive style of “White Girl” is something of an acquired taste. Appearing deliberately uncomfortable and grimy, filmmaker Elizabeth Wood offers her audience an exploitative and bitter portrait of young twentysomethings using titillation to feed their addictions and

base desires. Admittedly, this movie is not for everyone. This is a film that is sexually charged, and in a way has an ugly perspective on humanity. However, that seems to be the effect that Wood is going for. She wants you to watch in disgust and with fascination at the characters and how they are wasting away their lives. It’s hard to recommend, but “White Girl” feels like a deadly haze. It’s a stroll through the thick and fickle waters of hell. This film is available on Netflix.

‘The Monster’ 2016 | R | 91 min.

In an unnecessarily placed opening narration, 10-year-old Lizzy (Ella Balentine) describes how monsters are always lurking in the darkness. This rings very true for the girl who struggles to live with her abusive, alcoholic mother, Kathy (Zoe Kazan). Their relationship has become so turbulent to the point where Lizzy decides to be placed into her father’s care permanently. As Kathy is driving Lizzy to her father’s house, the mother and daughter get into a car accident, leaving them stranded on a deserted road in the middle of the night. Initially thinking that their accident was caused by an

animal on the road, the two eventually learn that there might be a far worse predator hunting them. Kathy must now find the strength to survive the night and protect her daughter from the blood thirsty monster lurking in the darkness. There’s much to appreciate about horror movies that look at life with a symbolic perspective. Films such as “It Follows” and “The Babadook” offer a horrific analyzation at everyday culture and social conventions. Looking at “The Monster,” it’s easy to see that the filmmaker is trying to treat addictions and fear as something more animalistic and brutal.

First and foremost, the scares in the film work. Always playing on the anxiety of the audience, “The Monster” is a horror film that delivers on a level of suspense. However, the script written by Bryan Bertino fails to really work its symbolic angle. Flashbacks are sprinkled throughout the film to show Kathy’s impotence as a mother, but anything involving the meaning of the titular monster is left hanging. There are better movies of its kind, but “The Monster” is still an effective horror film that isn’t light on the thrills. This film is available on Amazon Prime.

Monarchs Shut Out LIU Brooklyn

Photo by Shamon Jones Harry Howard Jr. Sports Editor The ODU baseball team hosted LIU Brooklyn in their season opener at the Bud Metheney Baseball Complex and shutout the Blackbirds 130. Their 13 runs were the most that they've scored in a season opener since 2006 when they scored 16. The Monarchs managed to get 12 of their runs across the plate in the first three innings of the game. Senior Nick Walker started at third base and

went 3-for-5 at the plate with four runs batted in finishing the game just a home run shy of the cycle. Junior Jared Young was ODU's second-most productive hitter going 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs, and two runs batted in. Although LIU Brooklyn did not score they had a couple of chances to get men across home plate. In the first inning, Blackbird sophomore Joe Mercadante lined a single up the middle and then found his way to second base after a sacrifice bunt. With a

runner in scoring position, Monarch starting pitcher Adam Bainbridge tightened up and got two consecutive outs to get out of the inning. Senior catcher Kurt Sinner hit the first Monarch home run of the season in the third inning where the offense erupted for seven runs. ODU's Lefty Bainbridge pitched five scoreless innings, striking out five batters, and giving up just two hits. Jim Wilkerson and Isaiah Nelson pitched two innings each in relief striking out three batters and giving

up just one base hit. In the top of the third inning, the Blackbirds once again looked poised to score after Bainbridge walked Charles Misiano with one out in the inning. Following the walk, Mercandante hit a double down the left field line to put him and Misiano into scoring position. Once again Bainbridge stepped up when he was needed striking out the next two LIU Brooklyn batters to end the inning. Right fielder Turner Bishop made the play of the game on a diving

catch in the second inning. It eventually ended up being the No. 7 play in SportsCenter top plays. The Monarchs will be back on the diamond Feb. 24 against Delaware for the start of the ODU Baseball Tournament. The tournament will also include Kentucky and Saint Joseph's. Their final game of the tournament will be a Sunday Dog Day on Feb. 26 against Saint Joseph's.

Lady Monarch Lacrosse Off to 2-0 Start

Harry Howard Jr. Sports Editor

Following a historic run last year, the Lady Monarchs lacrosse team opened up the season on the road with two wins against VCU and Campbell University. ODU defeated the Rams 10-7 at Cary Street field. Junior midfielder Cydney Tutchton led the Lady Monarchs with three goals and added one assist. Her teammate Morgan Marrale had a game-high three assists and senior goalkeeper Maggi Buckley started her season off on the right note with nine saves on 21 shots. The Rams got on the scoreboard first with a goal by Molly Barcikowski five minutes into the first half but the Lady Monarchs responded a minute later to tie the game at one. At the half, ODU led 5-4 and outshot VCU 15-11. VCU would score first in the second half to tie the score back

up. Lady Monarch senior attacker Colby Mueller would score two goals in 35 seconds to regain the lead at 7-5. The Rams would cut the lead to one once again but goals by Connor Carson, Megan Topper and Tutchton put the game away. ODU's (2-0) second game of the season was a nail biter as they scored twice in the final minute in an 11-10 win over the Cambell University Fighting Camels (0-2). Preseason All-Conference selection Connor Carson had her first hat trick of the season, while Tutchton and Natalie Ledwitz contributed two goals apiece. Maggi Buckley was solid in net once again with nine saves on the 28 shots she faced. The Lady Monarchs started off hot leading 5-1 after a goal by Topper with 16:08 remaining in the first half. Cambell would battle back into the contest in the scoring three times in final 11 minutes of the half to bring the

score to 5-4. Less than two minutes into the second half Campbell's Kayla Reilly scored an unassisted goal to tie the game at 5-5. The back in forth scoring would continue as the Carson scored to put the Lady Monarchs back in front 6-5 before the Fighting Camels scored the next two goals to taking a 7-6 lead. ODU responded to that run by scoring three consecutive goals taking a 9-7 lead with 12:10 seconds to play. It seemed like the Lady Monarchs had taken Campbell's last punch but the Fighting Camels bounced back scoring three more times to take a 10-9 lead with 2:10 left on the clock. ODU would score twice in a 44-second span to clinch their victory. Tutchton knocked home the game-winning goal with just 19 seconds left. They will be back in action on the road against Virginia Tech Feb. 25 at 1 p.m.

Sports Monarchs Put Away 49ers With Second Half Run

Ahmad Caver (4) drives to the basket. Photo by Josef Hicks Harry Howard Jr. Sports Editor ODU finished the game on a 22-2 run to blow out the Charlotte 49ers, 72-48. The 24-point victory was the Monarchs largest margin of the season. Sophomore Ahmad Caver performed well once again scoring 17 points and dishing out eight assists. "The guys know that we've challenged them. We haven't put together a string," ODU head coach Jeff Jones

said. Charlotte (11-14, C-USA 5-9) was out of sync all night long turning the ball over 18 times. The lone bright spot for the 49ers was their freshman guard Jon Davis who scored more than half of their points with his 26. Davis was 8-for-20 from the field. "Guarding him it was just me, our team played great help defense," Caver said about guarding Davis. At the half, ODU (16-10, C-USA 9-5) led 32-25 with Jordan Baker,

Zoran Talley and Ahmad Caver each scoring six points. With under 16 minutes remaining in the second half, ODU pushed the lead to 38-27 but Charlotte countered with an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to two. That would be the closest the 49ers would get as the Monarchs turned up the pressure in the game's final 10 minutes behind the energetic crowd at The Ted. "Down the stretch, our defense was terrific," Jones said.

Scores by period ODU Charlotte The Mace & Crown

Technology YouTube to Kill Unskippable Ads in 2018 Ross Reelachart Technology Editor In a move that will surely make internet video viewers happy, Google announced that it will end non-skippable 30-second ads in 2018. This was announcement was first made to UK publication Campaign and later confirmed by The Verge. While this will certainly please many users of YouTube, this announcement does not mean advertisements will be going away entirely for the world's largest video-sharing website. Ads shorter than 30-seconds can still be made unskippable. Plus, Google introduced a six-second "bumper ad" format in April last year that will remain unskippable as well. These six-second ads were called "little haikus of video ads" by a YouTube representative in a blog post and were generally better for mobile viewing, which is where 50 percent

of 18- to 49-year-olds do their YouTube viewing. Conversely, this move will probably upset advertisers who feel like they will be losing valuable ad space in front of YouTube's huge potential audience. According to some experts, though, the decision is a logical one for YouTube. "At the end of the day, if you're engaging right from the start, you don't got to worry too much," Andrew Peake, a managing director for an integrate creative agency, said in regards to length of ad time. Additionally, some experts see this as a sign that YouTube is starting to get desperate for ad revenue. "We know that video is right at the very core of Facebook’s roadmap. Their video offering is becoming ever more attractive to brands by the day, and YouTube is panicking," Callum McCahon, a strategy director for Born Social, said.

TECH IN A SEC 'Pokemon Go' Gets Bigger The once-massive mobile game “Pokemon Go” will be getting bigger with the next update from developer Niantic. The biggest part of the update will be the addition of “more than 80” new Pokemon from “Pokemon Gold” and “Pokemon Silver.” Other additions include additional catching mechanics, a new berry item and full customization options for your trainer avatars. Apple Will Fight 'Right to Repair' Apple is planning to oppose legislation in Nebraska that would require electronics manufacturers to sell repair parts to consumers and repair shops, as well as make available diagnostic and service manuals. Apple’s representatives say that the opposition is due to the danger inherent to repairing an iPhone or other Apple device by untrained consumers. Nokia to Relaunch the 3310 Originally released in 2000, the Nokia 3310 went on to become one of the most commonly-used early mobile phones with a reputation for being nigh-indestructible. Now Nokia will be relaunching the 3310 for 59 euros, and will likely be marketed as a cheap and reliable secondary phone for people who want a no-frills mobile phone. Disney and Google Drop PewDiePie Popular YouTuber and screeching facehole Felix “PewDieDie” Kjellberg has reportedly been dropped by both Google and Disney after a video of his featured a pair of shirtless men holding up a sign reading “Death to All Jews” and an actor dressed as Jesus said “Hitler did absolutely nothing wrong.” While Kjellberg has deleted the video and maintains his YouTube channel, Google canceled the second season “Scare PewDiePie” and Disney Maker Studios has severed their ties with him.

Email technology@maceandcrown.com Valve to Replace 'Steam Greenlight' With 'Steam Direct' Continued from front “Greenlight also exposed two key problems [...]: improving the entire pipeline for bringing new content to Steam and finding more ways to connect customers with the types of content they wanted,” according to the Steam Direct announcement. According to the post, Steam Direct is set to launch in Spring 2017 and will utilize a paperwork-based verification system that is “similar to the process of applying for a bank account." The process will also feature an application fee for each new title presented, in an effort to prevent over-saturation. While Valve has yet to decide on a final cost for the application fee, they have “talked to many developers and studios about an appropriate fee” and that the cost could potentially be anywhere from $100 to $5,000. Reactions to the introduction of this new proposal have been mixed. While many see Direct as a superior alternative to Greenlight, there are also a number of those who see Di-

rect as more unfriendly to aspiring indie developers. The main source of doubt is the potential price. Many find the possibility of a $500 publishing fee to be extremely discouraging to up-and-coming developers who are already struggling financially. The discussion over the potential cost has caught the attention of Raw Fury, a game developer most known for games such as “Gonner” and “Kingdom." In response to this issue, Raw Fury has promised to cover the price of admission for certain developers in the event that the cost reaches the $1,000 or beyond range. “We chatted amongst ourselves and came to an immediate understanding that there had to be something we do the contribute to the indie com munit y” the developer said in a post on the company’s official website. “So we’ve decided to try to

financially support some developers that are doing amazing things but might struggle with Steam Direct if the fee ends up being on the expensive side.” All things considered, it would appear that most users are pleased with the new approach Valve is taking with Direct. While Greenlight was marred by sub-par releases and a lack of proper oversight and quality control, it seems that Direct is a response to fan feedback and a genuine attempt to improve their service. If Valve can find a way to make the entry fee affordable to most developers, Steam Direct may succeed in a way that Greenlight did not, while also benefiting consumers and developers alike.

'Nioh' Review: A New Take on the Souls Games

Daija Marrow Contributing Writer Team Ninja, the creators of the “Ninja Gaiden” series, have developed their own take on the "Souls-like" RPG with “Nioh.” Set in the warring states period of Japan, the story revolves around a stone called the Amrita which gives its wielder great spiritual abilities. In an attempt to gain such power, a malevolent alchemist steals the Spirit Guardian of the main protagonist, William, whom has had the ability to access the spirit world since childhood. Now he traverses through Japan, killing yokai, looting chests and creating spiritual alliances in pursuit of his friend. Although this PS4 exclusive has been compared to "Dark Souls" and "Bloodborne," Team Ninja has infused their own unique flavor into this familiar game genre. "Nioh" has its own version of a stamina bar, and it's call "ki." William also has three stances that can be used to differentiate combat style and strength. There are high, mid and low options and each provides a different set of attacks. There are enemies that require William to be in a certain stance to fight efficiently, or you risk wasting ki and leaving yourself open

to a counter. Some ki can be regained with a well-timed button press which releases a "ki pulse" following an attack. But the enemies are not without their own tricks. When yokai are around they release a toxin that saps health and ki regeneration. Both require good timing and familiarity, so honing these skills early in the game is recommended if one hopes to succeed in defeating later bosses. Another key tool within the game that shouldn’t be overlooked are the shrines. Since these are sacred, a shrine will not activate when enemies are around. When the surroundings are secured the option to pray appears, and allows William the option of refilling his health and magic. A big let down in this feature is that traveling between shrines is not possible, which was something players eventually unlocked in the Souls games. However, if enough exploration is done there is usually a shortcut doorway that leads back to the first or second shrine, eliminating the need to fast travel. Every shrine has several options available, including leveling up, summoning co-op players and changing William's "Guardian Spirit." When defeating enemies William receives Amrita which is used to level up and every time one levels up, the required cost increases. When William dies, he leaves behind his Amrita where he fell, which can be retrieved. But "Nioh" brings a new twist to this retrieval mechanic. William's Guardian

Spirit stays where he died, protecting the Amrita. Without the Guardian Spirit the player cannot use their "Living Weapon" special ability. If the player decides to call back their guardian, they will lose the Amrita. So this leaves the player with an interesting choice: Manually retrieve their Amrita while underpowered, or automatically get their power back without the Amrita. Throughout the maps there are adorable lost demons called Kodama who are supposed to protect the shrine. When they are found they return to the shrine and offer William their blessings, though only one blessing at a time can be applied. Be sure not to accidentally swing too close to the shrine, or risk scaring the tiny Kodama. If they are frightened they will vanish, disabling the use of your shrine for a brief moment. The intense atmosphere with yokai enemies and questionable allies make this title an interesting challenge when exploring the Japaneseinspired fantasy land. “Nioh” has elements that resemble “Dark Souls” from it’s shrines to its stat system, but the immersive story and roller coaster difficulty make it a must play. That being said, Nioh is not nearly as difficult as Dark Souls, with smaller maps and easier, more logical boss fights and more welcoming NPCs. It’s a title worth the time, but maybe not so much the dollar. Give it a month or two to drop in price.
