Popular Dance Craze Unexpectedly Remerges By: Dominique Bailey and Nick Bailey Staff and Contributing Writers Mace & Crown Old Dominion has caught dance fever and is now gathering in groups to Harlem Shake like millions across the globe.

On Sunday, Old Dominion students Ilana Davlin and Andrei Poleshchuk hosted an ODU Harlem Shake video on the front steps of Webb Center. A simple comment posted by Poleshchuk on the ODU Confessions Facebook page planted the event’s seed.

“I saw some of the Harlem Shake videos online and I couldn’t stop watching them.

After watching over a 100 of them, I posted

on [the] ODU Confessions [Facebook page], suggesting that someone should start the dance here at ODU,” said Poleshchuk.

Davlin saw Poleshchuk’s comment and decided to collaborate with him, which led to ODU’s own Harlem Shake.

Immediately, the two created a Facebook event and invited everyone they could. Although they promoted the event for days, neither knew what the turnout on Sunday would be like.

“I had no idea so many people would show up. I thought that people would say they were [going to show up] on Facebook, and just not show up,” said Davlin.

“Little did we know that over 300 people would come out this event,” said Polesh-

chuk.

Surprising the two event coordinators, hundreds of people flocked to the Webb on Sunday afternoon. One of the many in attendance was student and lead dancer Nick Reaves. Humored by the dance craze, Reaves could not wait to participate in ODU’s own Harlem shake video. He volunteered to be the lead dancer in Davlin and Poleshchuk’s video.

“It’s pretty sweet. I saw it about two weeks ago, and it’s better than all the other videos on YouTube right now,” said Reaves.

Student Entrepreneur Trio Wins Accelerator Grant

“If you can find a problem that you can solve then you have a business,” are wise words spoken from Franck Tchouambou, a business administration major at Old Dominion University. Along with Daniel Calabro and John Polizos, the trio has planned the process of beginning their own business called CampusWise.

The group of entrepreneurs described it as a local interactive Cragislist-type of social network, but more organized. in the sense, that any user would need a college email to sign up for each specific group and fair prices may already be determined by the administrators. Their initial plan is to execute quickly and start small, so there is a projected launch date in mid-March for the website. Old Dominion University users can expect to see find the first phase that will focus on book sharing. For any situation, where a student may need to rent a book for a few days as opposed to the whole semester, CampusWise would provide an outlet for students to reach out, help each other, and maybe make a few bucks on the side with shorter waits than shipping.

The second phase, would expand into ridesharing and carpooling. Craigslist offers a similar service, however this is planned as being much safer and more organized knowing that all the options are from fellow Monarchs, and no one is going to be able to get away with sales scams.

The main things we have been working on are our Employer Letters, Finish in Four videos and SGA Week.

The letters are for various employers whom we want to see at our next career fair. They are basically outlines of why we believe we have qualified candidates. Students write the letters of which we send off to employers. If you have any ideas for employers you are interested in, please email me at mabdelha@odu.edu.

The videos we are working on with senior Communications student, Aaron Hodnett, are about Finish in Four program and Stereotypes. We hope to have the Finish in Four video play at previews over the summer and the Stereotypes video will play at the International Festival.

SGA Week is rapidly approaching and we hope to engage as many students as possible throughout the week.

The schedule will go as follows:

On Monday, Feb. 18, we will be handing out pins that students typically get at convocation, especially for students that may have lost theirs, never attended convocation, or transferred. We will also be setting up podiums around the seal as a sign of our “don’t step on the seal” tradition.

On Tuesday, Feb. 19, we will be hosting an STD Awareness activity, during activity hour, in House of Blue, with free Ice Cream and Cake! We also have our weekly SGA meeting at 3:30 p.m. in the Board of Visitors Room.

On Wednesday, Feb. 20, we will be hosting an SGA forum to find out what student issues are arising which will be held in the Hampton Newport News Room at 2 p.m. We will be in the area before 2 p.m. if anyone cannot attend and would like to tell us some of their issues. We will hand out free REP ODU shirt with the new design and attendees will be put in a raffle for a hoodie. Chick-

Tchouambou stated that by creating their own business, the group is learning to solve their own problems, and can fulfill their marketing dreams by starting out after graduation with their own company instead of trying to work for someone else’s.

Until the official start of CampusWise, the students have been spending a plethora of their time running around from their office on Granby Street downtown. Along with office space, Hatch, a mentor-based startup accelerator program for entrepreneurship, realized the young group’s potential and granted them $15,000.

As of right now, CampusWise is still in its development stages and is projected to begin mid-March. Once it becomes available to sign in, all that would be needed is an odu.edu email address to register and become a part of the action.

On Thursday, Feb. 21, we will be hosting another activity hour, in the front lobby of Webb. We will be stuffing animals for children, giving out discount cards, and raffling off hoodies.

On Friday, Feb. 22, we will be hosting an “end-ofthe-week” celebration between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the House of Blue with food and a DJ. Come out and engage with some current SGA members and fellow students!

Some things we are also currently working on include; a Busch Gardens trip for International Students, co-sponsoring the Exam Jam with OSAL, an “Eating with Strangers” event during Peace Week, a DVD sale and a presentation to the Faculty Senate about reading days.

continued from “Harlem Shake” scene in 2000, is the creation of DJ and producer, Baauer. The dance has reemerged in the form of his trap electronic dance music (EDM) track, “Harlem Shake.”

“Harlem Shake” was released over nine months ago, but is finally being noticed thanks to the power of the Internet. Relatively unknown, Baauer is a 23-year-old Brooklyn-based DJ and producer. Having found no success at making traditional house music, Baauer found his niche once he began making hip-hop influenced bass music.

Fusing the two together, he has been able to rise with other DJs and producers by crafting the EDM sub-genre.

Currently, the high energy, four minute track is being immortalized through the series of short, YouTube videos, typically 30 seconds or less.

Each Harlem Shake video begins with one costumed dancer while others sit seemingly oblivious to the dancer’s silly moves and attire. With a simple camera trick simultaneous to the beat dropping, the onlookers join the action now dressed as silly as the first dancer. YouTube has seen a massive, unexplainable influx of uploads featuring these short, energetic videos since the beginning of February. Locally, Old Dominion’s baseball team and students within resident halls have uploaded videos of themselves performing the popular dance.

While some don’t last as long as others, novelty and craze dances have been around for decades. New dance crazes often look to the previous ones for inspiration. Noticing the past’s influence on Baauer’s song and the videos it inspired, Jon Tyson, an Old Dominion junior said, “With this specific song [Baauer] took a dance exclusive to the black community years ago, and transformed it. [It has] evolved into an international craze that everyone wants to be a part of.”

While the dance crazes that arise are fun, they do not go untouched by the criticism from other music artists, music critics and music fans for not being essential to their respective genres. In some cases, people even go as far as to say it almost ruins the authenticity and true vibe of the music. Although he recognizes the allure and novelty of these craze dances, Tyson said, “I don’t think they are musically important. A lot of music these days doesn’t really have much dancing, but it’s important in the music business if you can get a song that can sell and everyone worldwide will attempt to do a specific dance to.”

Refusing to be left out of the fun, the Old Dominion Administration hosted a Harlem Shake video contest. Students were able to submit their own Harlem Shake videos from Feb. 13 until Feb. 20. The video showing the most Monarch spirit will be featured on various official Old Dominion media outlets including the YouTube channel and Facebook page. Videos could be submitted by uploaded to an active YouTube account and emailing the video URL to oduadmin@odu.edu.

Sustainable Living Fair at ODU By: Derek Page News Editor Mace & Crown

Over 50 exhibitors set up in Webb Center for the 2013 Sustainable Living Fair. Exhibits demonstrated sustainable living practices on topics like “Reducing the plastic in your life,” “Raw Food as Medicine,” and “Conserving Resources.”

There were also interactive exhibits like the “Norfolk Master Gardeners Seed Swap,” and “Hampton Roads Hens,” where visitors could interact with live hens.

In the fair’s newsletter, Bev Sell, general manager of Five Points Community Farm Market, said, “Sustainability is important to assuring that we have and continue to have, the water, food, materials and resources to protect human health and our environment.”

Five Points Community Farm Market held a raffle where participants could win a Spring CSA and a pair of Amtrak tickets.

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture and is a program that supports local farmers and farm markets on a subscription basis. Subscribers pay for produce in advance so farmers know what to grow and what they’ll sell.

“Sustainability is more than just changing our light bulbs,” said Sell. “It’s time that we change our thinking. What future impact are we having on the next generations? After all, we are all in this together.”

Meteor Explodes Over Siberia By: Derek Page News Editor Mace & Crown In a freak coincidence on Friday, a meteor exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia on the same day 2012 DA14, a 45-foot wide asteroid, made a narrow pass by Earth.

Russian space agency Roscosmos said “the meteor blazed across the sky at 19 miles per second leaving a long white trail visible as far as 125 miles away.” NASA estimates the meteor was 55 feet wide prior to entering Earth’s atmosphere and weighed an estimated 10,000 tons.

“We would expect an event of this magnitude to occur once every 10,00 years on average,” said Paul Chodas of NASA’s Near-Earth Object Program Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. “When you have a fireball of this size we would expect a large number of meteorites to reach the surface and in this case there were probably some large ones.”

NASA also stated the meteor exploded with almost 500 kilotons of energy, roughly 30 times the size of the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima in WWII, sending sonic waves reverberating over the region approximately 1,000 miles east of Moscow.

More than 1,000 people were injured as windows were shattered and walls knocked down. Of that number, over 200 were children, 50 were hospitalized, and one woman was flown to Moscow for a spinal injury resulting from the blast.

State-run news agency, RIA Novosti said more than 4,000 buildings, mostly apartment blocks were damaged, and 77,222 square miles of glass were broken, according to the Chelyabinsk regional emergencies ministry.

Thousands of emergency workers responded to the event, and divers searched a lake for meteorite fragments in a lake near Chelyabinsk where a large hole was opened in the ice.

Chelyabinsk is home to many Russian defense industry plants, and the lack of evidence of the meteorite is heating many conspiracy theories.

It might have been “war-mongers” in the United States said nationalist leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky. “It’s not meteors falling. It’s a new weapon being tested by the Americans,” he said.

A priest near Chelyabinsk called it an “act of God.” Old Dominion University professor and geophysicist Declan De Paor said Chelyabinsk was formerly identified as the site of a disastrous nuclear accident occurring in 1957, the worst since Chernobyl.

The last time a meteor hit Earth was in 1908 and, coincidentally struck in Siberia, and was the largest impact event on Earth in recorded history.

De Paor had been monitoring 2012 DA14 as it passed extremely close to Earth, about 17,000 miles at its closest point, which was above Indonesia. Although he and other experts unanimously concurred the asteroid wasn’t going to hit Earth, De Paor mentioned that if it had, it would have been a lot worse than Chelyabinsk, but much less destructive than that of the 1908 event.

“What defines a meteor or an asteroid can be somewhat confusing,” said De Paor.

“We call these objects meteoroids when they are in outer space, meteors as they pass through the atmosphere and meteorites after they impact the surface. They are distinct from ‘meteor showers,’ which are particles of dust left over from the tails of comets that previously crossed Earth’s orbit,” said De Paor.

“Meteoroids are either fragments of a planet’s crust knocked off during craterforming impacts, or fragments of the interiors of planetesimals, which are failed planets that were smashed to smithereens by giant impacts early in the history of the solar system. They may be rock or metal, depending on whether they came from the mantle or core of a planetesimal, or they can be so-called chondrites if they came from a planetesimal that never got the chance to differentiate into a core and mantle. However, most burn up on entry and never reach the surface of the Earth.”

On Tuesday, the Mace & Crown held an AP style workshop. We taught the students in attendance how to edit stories for newspapers. AP style requires special formatting of dates and titles. We taught them by handing out cheat sheets to take home and use, as well as, presenting the skills during the workshop.

The Mace & Crown will be at Relay for Life in April to help raise money for cancer.

ARTS & entertainment Veer’s Local Music Awards Celebrate the “Norfolk Sound”

By: Allison Terres Webmaster Mace & Crown The Veer Local Music Awards honored Hampton Road’s big names, emerging artists and diverse talent that our area has to offer. On Feb. 12, the awards presented by 96X packed the Naro Theatre for a second year in a row.

At 7 p.m., the sold-out theatre briefly transformed Colley Avenue into a red carpet as a line of local musicians, community personalities and entertainment lovers were ushered into the 757’s version of The Grammy’s.

Jeff Maisey, owner and head editor of Veer Magazine, hosted the show. The awards began with special thanks

(and much of the proceeds) given to The Hope House Foundation.

The results, ranging in categories from Best Rock to Best Busker, were decided by a vote of 20,000 people and a judging panel. The voters and judging panel, which included such local commentators as Paul Shegrue (NPR’s “Out of The Box”) and Kyle Bloom (The WAVY Hampton Roads Show) each counted as 50 percent of the decision.

The big winners of the night included three bands which each took home two awards. D*Nick, an electropop and experimental duo, won Song of the Year for “Day & Night” and Best Emerging Artist. The Pawnshoplifters, an edgy rockabilly group, won Album of

the Year and Best Rockabilly. Finally, The Fuzz Band, an R&B group, won Best R&B and Best Performance.

The night started with a performance by Seth Stainback and his band Roosterfoot, who was nominated for Best Blues. Stainback played with his band. Stainback’s voice is reminiscent of Warren Hayes with a sound that is just as old-school Rock–n-Roll.

As Maisey handed off silver microphone trophies to their respective winners throughout the night, he also introduced five acts total. These acts included D*Nick, whose cover of Nirvanna did not live up to the hype after their multiple wins, Crissy and the Dastards, The Mirrors, and SICman of Virginia. SICman stole the show with his rendition of “Purple Rain” that was possibly more flamboyant than Prince could do himself.

A final performance was supposed to include The Lifetime Achievement Award winner and 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Dickie Harrel. Unfortunately, after Dickie Harrel tripped on a power cord, the elderly man was escorted away to a restful night.

Concert promoter Bill Reid was honored with the Industry Award for his decades of involvement with the local music scene, helping to establish such local venues as The Boathouse, The NorVa and the Virginia Beach Amphitheatre. During his acceptance speech, he offered words of inspiration and encouragement, reminiscing on the days when he had to pay out of his own pocket to book The Red Hot Chili Peppers because no venue would take them.

No matter where the musicians came from, like Newport News’ J. Pharaoh (Best Hip Hop winner) or Chesapeake’s now nationally known The Last Bison, the night became a tribute to what many people fondly referred to as “the Norfolk Sound.” It was a testament to the thriving local music scene and support for that “sound” that our community continuously displays. But Maisey believes we still need to do more.

New Film Club Works to Thrive at Old Dominion By: Nephthalie Lauture Contributing Writer Mace & Crown “It’s turning out out really well, so far we have 15 members and we’re looking for more,” said Katie Hayes, ODU junior and founder, enthused when asked about the new and upcoming club, Monarch Productions Spotlight.

The idea for the club end of last year to give students interested in film a chance to experience the video production and photography world first hand. The club serves a variety of purposes for many students of different academic backgrounds. “I want to get students who are and who aren’t film majors to come together, teach each other how to work with cameras and edit in order to help with their future

careers in film” said Hayes.

The club’s mission is to showcase talents of editing, filming and photography. Also, to teach the basics of using modern cameras, according to the club’s Facebook page.

Along with familiarizing themselves with the video production world, the club also provides coverage of ODU events. Monarch Spotlight Productions can be seen at all campus events like Campus Chaos, a campus wide field day in which all the students participate in outdoor activities. Currently, Hayes is working on a way for anyone on campus to be able to request their services by filling out a form.

Still being the fairly new club that it is, Monarch Production members are still trying to promote the club and the services they provide. As of right

now, they only have 15 members and are working there way towards recognition among their peers. Hayes’s goal is to have 30 members by the end of the year.

Recently, Monarch Productions created a promotional video to showcase their talents. “It turned out so well; so many students showed up,” Hayes said, excited that her club was slowly becoming what she envisioned it would be.

The club meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays during activity hour. They are meeting in the Virginia Beach room temporarily until further notice. Until then, Hayes and the club members are working to spread the word about their services.

“Above all,” said Jeff Maisey, “the local music awards demonstrate the incredible diversity of local musical talent in the 757 region. So get out and go see the bands, plus several hundred that were not nominated this year, and support your local music scene.”

Snap Three Game Winning Streak Dogged Out: Lady Monarchs are Cooled off by James Madison 68-56 By: Mitchell Brown Senior Writer Mace & Crown

The Lady Monarchs gave a good effort, but were not prepared for the onslaught by the Lady Dukes.

The instate “rivalry” has not been much of that as of late. On Tuesday, the Lady Monarchs (16-8, 7-5) battled against long-time foe James Madison (16-8, 10-2). Tuesday’s matchup was the 76th meeting between the teams with the Lady Monarchs holding the 52-23 edge. The Lady Duke’s relentless offensive onslaught put Old Dominion in the loss column of their twenty-fourth game of the season, and snapping a three game win streak for the Lady Monarchs. The 68-56 victory was the fourth consecutive for the Lady Dukes, and nine of the last 11 in the series between the two.

The Lady Monarchs’ key to success all season has been generating turnovers, 21.7 per game, but ran into a great ball handling team that only turned the ball over seven times. “This team you’re not going to get turnovers, our game plan was to try and put pressure on them and I thought we did a really good job doing that and when they got to half court, it made it difficult for them to get into their sets; I really thought we had them scrambling,” head coach Karen Bare-

foot said.

The start of the Lady Monarchs was peculiarly slow. The Lady Dukes ran out to a 9-0 lead behind four quick points from senior guard Tarik Hislop. Hislop would go on to finish the game 22 points, shooting just under 50 percent from the field. The Lady Monarchs finally got on the board when forward Shae Kelley converted on one of two free throws. Free throw shooting would later haunt Kelley and the Lady Monarchs as she went 4-11 in 36 minutes of action.

“I just got to knock [them] down, there’s nothing to it. I mean, it feels good coming off my hands, so I just got to adjust and knock [them] down because I can, just have to put [them] in,” Kelley said. James Madison found early success in the paint, grabbing 10 of their 16 points inside through 10 minutes.

The defense of the Lady Monarchs has always been good, and was good once again; yet not necessarily creating turnovers but altering shots at the rim. The Duke Dawgs started out 6-22 from the field and 1-6 from three.

Sophomore point guard Ashley BetzWhite only played three minutes after being knocked out of the game with mild concussion symptoms while taking a charge. As a

result, freshman Galaisha Goodhope had to step up to the plate, and log a career-high 34 minutes to try, and lead the Lady Monarchs to victory. “I just wanted to pick up Ashley, that was a good charge she took, it was tiring, and thanks to coach and everybody that were keeping me up.” Goodhope said.

The Princess Anne alumnus was able to finish with seven points, six rebounds and three assists. The Dukes excelled in rebounding on the night, creating a rebound margin of +16 on the night. A major reason for that margin was partly because of Norfolk-native center, Toia Giggetts. Giggets had 17 rebounds, 10 of them offensive, and sunk in 10 points to grab a quality doubledouble. The Lady Monarchs tried to battle on the boards, but fell behind in the second half. “I thought we did a good job of battling, we were right there with rebounding at halftime but second half we didn’t do a good job,” coach Barefoot said. Kelley and Mairi Buchan both reached double figures, scoring 18 and 13, respectively.

The Battle and The War Tribe escapes Norfolk with a win 74-62, sweep Old Dominion for first time since 1998 By: Mitchell Brown Senior Writer Mace & Crown On a gloomy Saturday evening, a bitter Hampton Roads rivalry was renewed. The Old Dominion Monarchs (3-23, 1-13) took the court against the Tribe of William & Mary (11-14, 5-9) in what has been a lopsided rivalry. Coming in to the game, the Monarchs held a landslide 66-17 series lead.

The last meeting was a victory in favor of the Tribe, 71-62. A game that had no significance on the CAA standings, carried weight individually.

Tribe sophomore point guard Marcus Thornton was only averaging 10 points a game in three games versus the Monarchs, but his emergence in Saturday’s game would show why he was a highly touted recruit coming out of Bishop McNamara. The Monarchs fought hard in front of a crowd of 7,872 but were unable to come out with the victory, falling to the Tribe 74-62. The victory clinched the first sweep of Old Dominion for the Tribe since 1998.

The Tribe got an enormous contribution from their backcourt. Thornton and junior guard Brandon Britt combined for 50 of the Tribe’s 74 points. Thornton came into the game averaging 18 points but that will increase after a 32-point effort. The seven three-pointers for Thornton were a career high as well as the fourth most in a game in school history. William & Mary head coach Tony Shaver talked about the two and their

progression cohesively. “I’m glad these two are on my team...both of these guys were really good today. I thought Brandon was spectacular in the first part of the game.” coach Shaver said. “I think the thing that I’m proudest about with these two is that they’re learning to be complete players. They both can score the ball but they’ve really improved defensively, they’ve really improved at getting other people shots,” Shaver said.

The Tribe shot a whopping 56 percent in the first half while the Monarchs shot 48 percent. The score would be tied four times throughout the game but the lead never changed hands. The Tribe got to the line 22 times, half of those free throws credited to Thornton. “I was hitting my three ball early so when that’s happening, hit a pump fake and get in to the lane and draw the defense in and get to the line.” Thornton said. The sophomore is shooting over 80 percent from the charity stripe and has improved on last seasons percentage. “All summer I’ve been working on free throws, struggled with it last year and its something I’ve worked on and am able to do in confident when I step up to the line.”

The second half was a battle. Every time DeShawne Painter touched the ball, he was double-teamed and as a result, turned the ball over seven times. Tribe forward Tim Rusthoven gave Painter a hard time in the paint for 25 minutes, when he wasn’t in foul trouble. “As you can see we doubled him a lot, we don’t have someone that can guard him one on one. We did a good job dou-

bling him from the weak-side. He still had 16 and 10, but he also had seven turnovers so I thought we made him work for every basket.

The double-double was the ninth of the season for Painter.

Freshman Aaron Bacote tallied a career high 20 points on 8-14 shooting from the field, including four three-pointers. Bacote was able to point out what was working, specifically “Being aggressive, being on the attack like coach said.” He wasn’t 100 percent proud of his efforts, pointing out defensive struggles. “I think my defense wasn’t good at all in the first half, not being focused, I hit some shots on the offensive end but on the defensive end is where I really needed to clamp down, and I could’ve done better on the glass.”

The Monarchs only got the line seven times, missing all of the supposed to be free points. The shot selection of the Monarchs was good, the Tribe were just playing better defense. “I mean we shot 52 percent so obviously we got pretty good shots, I thought we were aggressive. I don’t know how many charge/block plays there were, we got one of them, but I don’t have a concern over the shots we took.” Monarchs coach Jim Corrigan said. This win for the Tribe earned the close rivals bragging rights, and their first win at the Ted since 2008. The Monarchs will look to snag a very winnable game against the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at the Ted. Monarch’s big man DeShawne Painter and company continue to look for answers in what has been a disastrous season.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: A Mid-Season Rundown of the NBA So Far

By Evans Sparks Contributing Writer Mace & Crown With the excitement from this past NBA All-Star Weekend slowly dying down, basketball enthusiasts are excitedly preparing themselves for the second half of the season.

As of yet, this year in the NBA has been one to remember. Between teams struggling to find consistency, and the heated on-court altercations, this season could only be seen for what it truly is, “dramatic.” Although true as that may be, this word isn’t used as a form of negativity. On the contrary, the most prominent element of the NBA is similar to a drama, because they have put on a show.

In the crazy and confused world that is the Eastern Conference, normality has become a concept that is rarely witnessed.

In the competitive Atlantic Division, a surprisingly good New York Knicks team leads the pack with a 32-18 record. After trading up-and-coming standout Jeremy Lin to the Houston Rockets in the off-season, many people saw this as a step back. Matters only appeared to be worse after power forward Amare Stoudemire injured his knee in the pre-season. Nearly everyone expected the team to fail, except the Knicks. Riding the shoulders and back of small forward Carmelo Anthony, the Knicks have silenced naysayers, and made it clear they’re looking for a run at the title. But along the way, the

Central Division leading Indiana Pacers are sure to become an obstacle.

Yes, the Indiana Pacers have a pretty good squad this year. But, considering the Pacers are leading their division and holding a solid third place spot in the conference, “pretty good” might be an understatement. At 3221, the Pacers have literally come out of thin air and placed themselves in playoff contention. As a team with no household name, or star players, the Pacers weren’t initially given a second thought. But instead, the Pacers have exploited one of the oldest rules in the book: “one star player doesn’t win games.”

Through a very balanced offense, the Pacers have branded themselves as a team not to be taken lightly. Surprisingly, the younger players on the team have been much of the heart of this team. Averaging 17.6 points per game and only in his second year, Paul George has set himself on a path for greatness. Also making a statement, starting guard George Hill has averaged 14.7 points a game, ensuring him as the future of this franchise.

Perhaps, the scariest thing about this Pacer team is their youth. Only Danny Granger and David West have played more than five years in the league, and scarier still, West “17.2 points per game” hasn’t even reached his tenth year yet. With their team equilibrium and youthful legs, the Indiana Pacers could not only see a playoff entry, but could also become a dominant team in the future.

Like in all dramas, this season has seen

much tragedy. The Philadelphia 76ers are prime examples of this. In perhaps, one of the most unbalanced trades in recent years, the 76ers traded Andre Iguodala for Andrew Bynum and Jason Richardson in a four-team off-season trade. Unfortunately for the 76ers, they’ve gotten what they asked for.

Along with losing their best player in Iguodala, the City of Brotherly Love has, yet to see Bynum set foot on the court for even a minute of play. Not to mention Iguodala’s new team, the Denver Nuggets, love him as an addition to the team and are playing great basketball at 33-21. Great job Philly. You’ve given your best player away to a team who is now a forerunner in the playoff battle.

Drowning in the cutthroat Atlantic Division, the Philadelphia 76ers are struggling to stay afloat as they go into the second half of the season at 22-29.

Amongst all the confusion of the Eastern conference, one can find some sanity in knowing that the Miami Heat is still the best team in the east. Will their conference reign continue for the remainder of the regular season? Some believe it is safe to say that it will. But, the dramatic story that is the NBA season is far from over. Few will rise, many will fall, and only one will prove to be the hero of the Eastern conference. So, before any assumptions are made, fans must remember this was only Act One. Act Two of the season has yet to begin.

Lebron James has had a historic first half of the season and has the Heat poised to defend their NBA champtionship.

Looking Over the West: NBA’s Western Conference Mid- Season Report By: Brian Saunders Contributing Writer Mace & Crown

Kevin Durant has turned his game up another notch and has his team sitting near the top of the conference standings.

Finally, the NBA has reached all-star weekend, the unofficial midway point of the regular season. A season that before it even began saw blockbuster trades, core players make moves to conference rivals, and bold predictions about conference winners. Has had its fair share of surprises and shameful disappointments in the Western Conference.

Disappointing Teams: Aug.13, 2012, just around a month and a half before the NBA regular season the Los Angeles Lakers pulled off a trade for superstar center, Dwight Howard. A deal, that analysts said would shake the whole West. Many crowned them Western conference champions, because just a month earlier they acquired two-time most valuable player Steve Nash to team with Kobe Bryant in their back court. That has not been the case thus far.

The Lakers have been nothing short of an abysmal catastrophe.

By far, the biggest disappointment of the first half of the season has to be the Lakers. The Lakers fired coach Mike Brown very early in the season, and then hired Mike D’Antoni, a coach whose system does not fit their roster. Not to mention Dwight Howard hasn’t been more than a shell of himself. Whether it’s constant arguments with alpha dog Kobe Bryant, complaining about touches or nagging injuries, the Howard experiment has not worked out well. Howard has been nothing short of disappointing this season, he doesn’t look like he is having fun and his stats are diminished, only averaging 16 points and11 rebounds. The Lakers who were picked to run away with the Western conference are 25-29 and 17 games back of the first place Spurs at the break, by far the biggest disappointment to this point.

Surprising Teams: “They’re too old, they’re done, it’s time for them to retool and start thinking about life after Duncan.” Many people thought the San Antonio Spurs were done, and too old to compete for another championship after they gave up a 2-0 series lead in last season’s Western conference finals. The Spurs made no big moves during the off-season, and are surprisingly the best team, not only in the West but the entire league. The oldest and deepest squad in the NBA is 42-12 at the mid way point of the season. It is an astonishing thing when you think about the age of their best three players, all over the age of 30 years, and just a testament to coach Gregg Popovich who is one of

the best coaches in the league.

The Denver Nuggets, who benefitted from the Dwight Howard trade acquiring Andre Iguodola, have continued to surprise the league since trading away Carmelo Anthony in 2011. The team is one of the youngest in the league and continues to shock the West.

By pushing the pace and playing aggressive defense, the Nuggets have continued to be one of the best teams. Denver is 33-21 at the break and in a dog fight with the Memphis Grizzlies for the fourth seed in the West. Under the tutelage of coach George Karl, they continue to defy odds and win without an all star let alone a superstar.

Another surprising team is second year coach Mark Jackson’s Golden State Warriors. The Warriors are a very young team who don’t have much experience, yet they are winning games while they learn. The team is 30-22. Jackson has changed the culture in Oakland, bringing that edge that he played with in his 17-year NBA career, the Warriors are playing defense and more importantly winning currently sixth in the West.

Surprising Players: Kobe Bryant should never be on the list of surprising players, but at the age of 34 in his seventeenth year his numbers are simply astonishing. Kobe is second in the league in scoring with 27 a game and is logging 38 minutes a night. Those numbers are simply amazing at his age with the miles he has put on his body. The surprising thing isn’t Kobe’s ability to score at volume, it’s surprising that he can sustain these numbers consistently this late in his career, with such a beat up body.

Everyone knew James Harden was a great player, but in Houston he has proved to be a franchise player. He is third in the league in scoring with 26 per game along with six assists and five rebounds.

Harden has become a superstar at the midway point of the season garnering his first all-star appearance this year.

Looking Forward: Looking forward to the second half of the regular season, I expect to see the Spurs and the Thunder continue to fight for the number one seed, but as of right now the Spurs lead by 2.5 games. After that the Clippers, Grizzlies and Nuggets will fight for the three, four and five seeds. The West is wide open after, the Lakers will try to fight their way out of the gargantuan hole they put themselves in after, the terrible display in the first half of the season to make the playoffs. I believe they can make it as the seventh or eighth seed. Kevin Durant and Tony Parker will conjointly try to chase down LeBron for MVP as well.

Season Opener Cut Short Eldridge AND Urps Salvage Split with 10-1 Thumping on Inclement Weather Shortened Weekend By. Brian Jerry Senior Writer Mace & Crown Old Dominion University baseball turned the tables in a three-run first inning and was all they needed to cruise past Marshall in a 10-1 pounding Saturday on an icy weekend at Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.

The scheduled game for Sunday was canceled due to wet grounds from the rain, snow and ice from the night prior.

Ryan Yarbrough recorded the win over the Thundering Herd in his first career ODU start and allowed just two hits and struck out seven in six innings of work.

Tyler Urps led off the ODU first with a single and ground out advance to second.

Soon after, Josh Eldridge belted a base hit to right to score Urps and take a 1-0 lead.

Wild pitches moved Eldridge over to third and Ben Slaton belted a single to bring home Eldridge and go up 2-0. Then, Joey Burney followed with a double to bring in Slaton for a 3-0 cushion.

The Monarchs jumped out to a four run

lead when Jordan Negrini pinged a double to left field that sent in Austin McGowan after he reached on a single.

ODU opened up the floodgates to the tune of a four run eighth inning. Eldridge launched a two-run bases loaded single. Burney walked with the bases loaded that forced in another run and Michael Perez sent in the tenth and final run on the day with a sacrifice fly.

Eldridge finished with a four-for-five day with four RBIs and two runs scored. Urps went three-for-five, with three runs scored and McGowan finished two-for-four.

Isaac Ballou led all Herd bats with two hits in five at bats. Aaron Blair suffered the loss and went four innings, allowing seven hits and four runs. Erick Baker and Michael Reinerth pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Yarbrough in the victory.

Although the Monarchs handedly controlled the second game, the first was anything but.

Marshall scored three unanswered runs in the seventh inning and held ODU to just three hits in a 3-0 win in the season opener for both teams.

Gray Stafford, Nathan Gomez and Alfredo Brito each knocked in a run for the Thundering Herd. Stafford drove in Aaron Bossi from third for a 1-0 Marshall lead. Gomez followed with a base hit up the middle that sent in Ballou for the second run to go up 2-0. The third and final run came on a sacrifice fly by Brito, bringing home Stafford and gave the visitors a 3-0 ceiling. Stafford and Gomez each recorded two hits on the day.

The Monarchs stranded two runners at third. In the seventh, Pat Kane reached on an error and went to second on a passed ball, then to third on a fielder’s choice. Two innings later in the ninth, 2012 CAA AllRookie team selection Eldridge tripled to right-center with one out but was stranded there as the side was retired. Eldridge finished with two hits, while Burney also had a hit in the eighth inning.

Dean Ali struck out six in four innings of action. Ali, Brad Gero, Brandon Smith and Mike Ney combined for 10 strikeouts in the game. The Thundering Herd’s Chase Boster, Ryan Hopkins and Matt Margaritonda fanned nine Monarch batters.

The Monarchs Pummel the Radford Highlanders By: Eric Guy Staff Writer Mace & Crown Old Dominion University men’s tennis meant business Saturday afternoon, swiftly trampling the Radford Highlanders 4-0 at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.

Following a week in which the Monarchs were dealt two crushing losses against Dartmouth and George Washington, the win moves the Monarchs to 6-3 on the year, injecting doses of confidence into the team in preparation for what is sure to be a slugfest, Sunday afternoon against Navy.

Throughout all nine of the Monarchs’ contests this season, the team continues to be anchored by yet another impressive showing from Carlos Lopez Villa, winning two sets to one, all the while improving to an astounding 9-0 on the year. When asked about his thoroughly impressive streak, the current Conference USA athlete of the week attributed his success to hard work and diligence. “I think the key to winning is practice, practicing as hard as I can and really trying to keep it up,” Lopez Villa said. “Keeping up the work rate and staying aggressive will lead to success.”

Hampered by an injury that resulted in minimal practice time, Alfred Ochagavia endured, winning in straight sets. “To be fair, I really wanted to get back on the court,” Ochagavia said humbly. “Not being able to play for a while and the desire to get back to the courts really got me going.”

During the first set, Ochagavia displayed finesse and agile footwork, making it extremely difficult for his opponent to counter his assault. Moreover, such skill created formidably consistent net-play for Ochagavia early on, resulting in a well-rounded onslaught that would be tough for anyone to contend with. “There were times in both the first and second sets that my opponent tried to change his game,” Ochagavia said. “I recognized from the very beginning that he is a baseline player, giving me more time to move up and better spots to win the point.”

Although wins by Ochagavia and Lopez Villa secured the victory for the Monarchs, Wesley Barrett had another strong showing, cruising to a 4-0 lead in the third set. Barrett managed to breakthrough after a grueling first two sets in which his opponent presented a challenge through a strong service game and breaking the serve of Barrett multiple times. “In the second set he was able to get into one of my service games and he hit a few solid shots, making him able to break me,” Barrett said. “Once he broke me, he kept holding and was able to take the set.”

While the momentum looked to have shifted in the other direction, Barrett meant business in the third set, “putting the hammer down” until play ended. “In the third set, I focused a lot on depth, keeping him back deep and not giving him a chance to attack. In being able to do that it forced him into errors.”

Now 2-2 in the month of February, including a huge win against No. 47 Harvard, the Monarchs look to have matured drastically in a little under two weeks time, instilling confidence, drive, and toughness into every member of the team. Although only nine contests into the season, this Old Dominion squad is prepared to fight, eager to “serve” anyone who attempts to stand in their way.

ODU men’s tennis has been pretty hard to stop in recent weeks.

Movie Magic Menu By: Emma Needham Staff Wrtier Mace & Crown Academy Awards season is here and while the stars attempt to diet their way to Feb. 24, the rest of us should indulge. Below is a complete day menu of foods inspired by some of the Best Picture Nominees. A vast range of styles, from American cuisine to Middle Eastern food, is incorporated into this movie magic menu.

Breakfast- French Crepes Inspired by: “Les Miserables” and “Amour” Two movies take place in France on this year’s nominee list. While “Les Miserables” is set in the nineteenth century, Amour jumps to modern day. Exquisite French cooking has never been missing from this culture.

Ingredients: One cup all-purpose flour One teaspoon sugar ¼ teaspoon salt Three eggs Two cups milk Two tablespoons butter

Directions: 1. Sift together flour, sugar and salt and set aside. In a large bowl, beat eggs and milk together. Beat in flour mixture until smooth then stir in melted butter.

2. Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately two tablespoons for each crepe. Tip and rotate pan to spread batter as thinly as possible, then brown on both sides and serve hot.

Lunch- Philly Cheesesteak Inspired by: “Silver Linings Playbook” While Bradley Cooper is out running the streets in his garbage bag, his mom is always at the house cooking her specialties for the family. And what is a more Philadelphian specialty than a home-styled Philly Cheesesteak?

Ingredients: Three Tbsp. vegetable oil One large yellow onion, sliced\ One red pepper Thin-sliced deli roast beef Sub or hoagie rolls One jar of Cheez Whiz Directions:

In a large skillet, heat two tablespoons of the oil over medium heat and cook the onions and peppers until they are tender and golden brown. While the vegetables cook, heat the Cheez Whiz in a bowl in the microwave just until warm, one to two minutes.

Stir and set aside. Remove the vegetables to a dish and add the extra tablespoon of oil to the pan. Increase the heat to mediumhigh and sear the beef quickly, until lightly browned, turning and flipping it frequently with a spatula. Divide the meat among the four split rolls, then heap on the onions and peppers, and spoon Cheez Whiz onto each sandwich.

Dinner- Gyros Inspired by: “Zero Dark Thirty” and “Argo” Way out in the Middle East, a plethora of delectable foods exist. Now, you wouldn’t want to be there for an Iranian hostage situation or to hunt Osama Bin Laden, but going for the food sounds alright.

Ingredients: For the gyro filling: ½ Tbsp. olive oil Four oz sliced roast beef Three drops Worcestershire Sauce

One dash paprika One tsp. garlic powder Three dashes black pepper For the tzatziki sauce: whole cucumber container eight ounce greek yogurt ½ red onion ½ teaspoons Dill ½ teaspoons Salt FOR ASSEMBLY: sliced flatbread whole tomato, sliced six ounces of feta cheese six ounces of sliced canned olives Directions: Heat olive oil in a skillet and add beef, worcestershire sauce, paprika, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, black pepper, and heat the beef. Let it sit on low heat while tzatziki sauce is prepared.

For Tzatziki sauce: Finely dice half of the cucumber and combine with yogurt, 1/4 of the red onion finely diced, vinegar and all remaining seasonings.

Spray your flatbread with cooking spray and put it under the broiler until it is soft and warmed through. Fill it with a generous amount of roast beef, followed by lots of

tzatziki sauce, feta cheese, tomato, cucumber and black olives.

Dessert- All-American Apple Pie Inspired by: “Django Unchained” and “Lincoln” What could be better than ending the day with a slice of traditional apple pie? Abraham Lincoln would certainly not argue with this, for apple pie was said to be his favorite dessert.

Ingredients: Three to four medium apples, peeled, cored and sliced One cup sugar 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1/2 stick unsalted butter, cut into bits Two store-bought pie crusts Directions: Place bottom crust in pan. Add apples, sprinkle with sugar and nutmeg. Top with butter, place top crust over and vent with a few holes poked in pastry top. Bake at 375 degrees for one hour. If desired, serve hot with some vanilla ice cream.

Now you really can travel into the movies with some great dishes. When the Academy Awards air on Sunday, Feb. 24, make sure to have your apple pie ready (and maybe some popcorn, too!)

Time Management = Success By: Eryn Tolley Staff Writer Mace & Crown

When you first begin your life at college, everyone tells you to develop some time management skills and if you’re like me, you learned that the hard way. Learning how to effectively manage your time can be one of the most difficult things to do in college; you have classes to attend, homework to do and dinner dates to make. With so much to do and keep track of, strong time management skills can make juggling everything in college a lot easier.

1. Get a calendar and use it. Owning a calendar is the first step to success in time management. It can be a paper calendar or even your cell phone. Use whatever is easiest for you to keep track of, just make sure you have one.

2. Write everything down. Write down everything in your calendar. Schedule when you will be in class, when you plan to study, when you are going to do your laundry. The crazier your schedule gets, the more important this becomes.

3. Schedule time to relax. Don’t forget to schedule some time in that calendar to relax, sleep, watch TV, or whatever it is you need to wind down because everyone needs a little downtime. Your calendar may have you moving from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., but that doesn’t mean your body can handle that.

4. Keep trying new systems until you find what is best for you. If your cell phone calendar isn’t big enough, buy a paper one or if you have too many things written down each day, try color-coding to help simplify things. All college students should have some kind of calendaring system, but some systems may not work for you.

5. Be flexible. Always leave a little room in your calendar in case you need to move things around. Things will come up that you weren’t expecting, like your roommate’s birthday party or a surprise visit from your family.

6. Always plan ahead. Always write due dates for projects in your calendar and make sure you leave an adequate amount of time to complete it; time management should not allow you to procrastinate. If you have a 10-page research paper due at the end of the

semester, find out how much time you need to pick your topic, do research and write it. If you think you’ll need four weeks, write that in your calendar. Set aside time in your calendar each day for the four weeks before the paper is due.

7. Expect the unexpected. Never count on all-nighters. You might think you can do research and write that 10-page paper in one night, but what happens when you catch the flu? You’re not going to be able to stay up all night. So, expect the unexpected, and you will always be prepared.

8. Reward yourself. No matter how great of a student you are, midterms week is always a nightmare, but it will all be over on Friday by 3 p.m. Schedule some time for a nice dinner out with some friends because your brain will need it, and you deserve it.

By scheduling some fun into your week, you can relax knowing that you have nothing else to do in that moment.

Consoles: The Next Generation By: Sean Burke Assistant Webmaster Mace & Crown Sony released a cryptic video a few weeks ago that teased “the future of PlayStation” would be revealed on Feb. 20. Since the videos release, game journalists have been abuzz with speculation on the next generation of consoles. Nearly every outlet assumes the announcement is for the PlayStation 4. This may be due to the fact that the PlayStation 2 and 3 were announced on the same calendar day years ago along with the fact that rumors for the Xbox 720 have also been circulating.

But it isn’t just the two big publishers, Sony and Microsoft, who are entering the next-gen race. Other companies, previously known for PC publishing, are considering entering the battle for the living room. Whether it is the Kickstarter funded Ouya, the Valve sponsored Steam Box or even an Nvidia sponsored mobile streaming platform called Shield, the battlefield by your coffee table is getting crowded.

All of these devices act as PC2TV devices, meaning they are either literally PCs that have a direct link to a television, or they act as a pass-

through device for your PC to your TV. It really isn’t surprising that the console market is more crowded than ever. With consoles today performing like PCs and using offthe-shelf parts in their assembly, anyone can get into the market if they have the capital and technological foresight. What really separates consoles today is the User Interface (UI), exclusive game titles and the online ecosystem.

PlayStation this generation has had the better system in terms of hardware. The system doubled as a blue ray player and has better processing power than an Xbox 360. However, the Xbox 360 has a better UI and is thus better for the user to use. The PlayStation suffers from constant software updates, and lack of marketing on its big name titles; unlike Microsoft, which will flood a market with advertising for games like “Halo 4,” which had commercials on TV, YouTube, IGN, The Xbox 360 Dashboard and even billboards in major cities. Sony simply does not push marketing on its biggest games such as PlayStation’s “All Stars: Battle Royale,” which still does not have a gameplay trailer despite it being released in November of 2012.

Microsoft excelled this generation at creat-

ing a living ecosystem of gamers on its console with Xbox Live allowing for cross-game chat and easy to manage friends’ lists. The service allows you to access hundreds of apps on the Xbox Marketplace and turns your console into not only a games machine, but a music player, a television when linked to a service provider account, and a personal theater when linked with Netflix. Microsoft has succeeded in marketing the Xbox 360 as an entertainment console as well as a games console. While Sony has much of the same functionality, it has geared its marketing to the hardcore gamer audience and lost a great deal of market share for it.

But all of that was last generation as the future is soon. Will we see augmented reality machines that turn a living room into a game space? Will motion controls still play a prominent role in game design? And will people leave the last eight years of consoles behind to jump to fresh hardware? We’ll find out by the end of the month whether or not Sony is even releasing new hardware, but we’ll have to wait until the end of the year to see what the real take-rate is.

No Taylor Swift pun intended. Talk about creeper, this guy is just asking for it. So what did the actress do in response? Put a restraining order on him to protect her family. That’s why Miss American Pie Band Camp star herself is being handed the Crown Jewels for this seven-day period.

According to TMZ, the 38-year-old How I Met Your Mother star filed the order in L.A. County Superior Court, claiming John Hobbs has been harassing her on the Internet, posting threatening messages on Facebook, MySpace and Alyson’s website.

Hannigan added that Hobbs is “mentally unstable and was recently released from a mental hospital.”

She said that Hobbs also suggested he would rape her, posting a message

online that reads, “Lets see how can I get myself in trouble today. If I go with what I’ve been accused of most of my life, I suppose I should start with being a rapist, so any nice girls out there want to get raped?”

Hannigan got protection for herself, husband and two children.

A hearing is scheduled for March 6 and the judge will make a decision whether or not the order will be permanent.

It’s pretty tough and hopefully this guy gets separated from Hannigan for the foreseeable future and beyond. It’s quite the scary situation to say the very least, but I’m happy that she’s taking all the steps to make sure this guy doesn’t act on his alleged intention. Kudos to you Mrs. Hannigan, I’m proud to give you these jewels. Maybe you could use them to lock your door, whatever you prefer.

CREATIVE ENCLAVE Thoughts on a Clothesline from a store in America -andA Sign of the Big Red Scare By: Ryan Miller Nightfall on South Beach. There was little sentiment for the smell of alcohol on our breath. We stopped on the strip, at an outdoor cafe serving fish and shrimp tacos, jambalaya, and spicy Jamaican jerk chicken.

Margaritas surfaced and floated around the cornerstone bar, advertised locally as some of the best, with melons the size of an infant’s head sliced and hanging on rimmed glasses for garnishing. There was no denial that inhibitions were being lowered at every last drop from the first drink in Miami, a mojito served as red as a third-degree burn, like a splash of punch on ice, and a mint mojito for Diego. Girls walked on by for the show, decorated in their small outfits, trying to steal glasses of chardonnay, sugar coating phrases in Spanish semantic dialects from pearl glossed lips to company sitting in white coattails dragging to the floor, losing their balance to madness. Never test a drunk’s patience with manipulation, it’s all a matter of telling time before the hounds start calling, throwing their hands up, and plates come crashing down to the floor along with the irresponsible treachery from drinking.

It happened to be our first meal Dr. Bob needed his medication applied in his arm fat

by Diego or myself, otherwise he’d have to lean over the drunks and pin the needle into his stomach after the meal. I finished my first drink of Miami, came around to the other side of the table and fed the needle, expediting insulin into the bloodstream. We were looking like a couple of junkies shooting up right out in the open on the strip, among a bunch of drunks yammering at each other, then looking over with their mouths dropped open, appalled to see what new low level of disordinance the public has fallen to.

Welcome to the new world order, the status quo being torn apart.

When I first stepped foot on South Beach I was immersed in entire culture, all about to engulf me with what little I had known in such few steps. The embodiment of a generation having its way with a clash of new and old world values. It was another year to helplessly collect my sins, buying into everything that was wrong with the way we lived.

Walking on the strip, mobilized with the taste of mojito mouth, and wired with observations of strip shops, walking body builders, street performers, and cracked out panhandlers. Diego needed a new coat for the next day’s cruise in the Caribbean, and just sticking your head into one of these brightly lit shops with raving dub-step music and mirrors on the ceiling became further proof of the fallen ordinance. That jacket there. It’s nice, nice. It’s a woman’s, but that can work down here….that coat? 400 dollars? No for you, half off, we’re going out of business. I’ll work it down to $195. Several blocks of this and it was all the exposure you need to half truths and everything cultivated out of illness from all the filth in the world.

A wrong look down a long dark alleyway and there’s scum bacteria everywhere, lurching in the dark. An elderly homeless man began hoppling about, a sort of semi-Quasimodo in appearance, hunched over and walking with a limp, begging for universal healthcare in America and just some spare change before his facial expression can no longer force a smile and has a schizophrenic

outburst from another bystander’s rejection.

Dr. Bob remarked, “you don’t need to give them anything, the city sets up those meters right over there so that people can feed their quarters to help the homeless.”

Everything was building to a non-obtainable climax of sorts, there seemed to be no noise code as the saxophones and break dancer’s stereo’s rang out. All eyes were fixed on Dr. Bob’s blue cane lighting up, stirring a reaction from a crowd like a confrontation with an imaginary firefly in a nightclub full of people rolling on ecstasy, falling over on one another and later asking each other what just happened.

The pecking order in perspective seems to pigeon hole and goes as: if you’ve got it, you flaunt it, if you don’t, you flaunt what you have, and if you have nothing, you get picked apart in comparison, an immediate outcast and avoided threshold of misfortune. Suddenly by just an instance of a second glance from trying to understand how you feel about what’s happening and it’s a quick disassociation with everyone around you. Plugged in sales staffers and the gulping consumers with shopping bags become fire breathers and juggling midgets.

Lost somewhere out in this wildness Diego and I began hollering back at each other rampant sex noises, just as a hyena does when chaotically hit below the belt. In a flight or fight response it becomes a psychological alternative where predators have to search for clues in meaning to what do next. The environment has changed drastically in appearance and expectation, and the best decision for treating a prey during this turnaround is to just back off and leave it alone, and find something else that won’t squeal “Yeahhhh!” and “Ohhhh!” into your face. There’s a whole other market out there that’s safer with yes-men blinded by glitters and ready to flex strips on credit cards.

The only apparel close to a reasonable price were some kind of latex white raincoats with studs that seem only appropriate for those situations that call for extensive role-playing and Freddie Mercury style innuendo. No more antics. It’s time to walk away from the strip, leave this pattern of disparagement and stop meddling with this handful of peril.

The next morning we should have prepared for a day in hell when leaving for the port of Miami to embark on a 5:00pm cruise to the Bahamas. I wasn’t originally overjoyed when given the cruise itinerary, it seemed nonetheless a trap door for upscale tourism, a fire and brimstone medley for someone like me, but since Dr. Bob cruises half of the year meeting all kinds of people it couldn’t hurt for the sake of despicable human-profiling and cultural journalism, Those reasons there are the basic logistics of this thing. I will make it so long as there isn’t an Italian captain capsizing our enormous Norwegian Sky and leaving passengers for complete abandonment, and then lumping us all together on lifeboats, perceived as these gluttonous peddlers with cameras, trying to capture the indecent experience of a disenfranchised third world country like a bunch of poor tribes people. And so, taking my thoughts and feelings for completely shipwrecked, it was time to pack up the truth in my suitcase and head out. Stark realities would soon be moving in, and I’m not sure if

not understanding the Spanish maid and her farewell wishes is a factor I can work into the argument that foreshadowed our bad luck.

Noticeably, Coral Gables has a strict code of neighborhood rules for following. Houses must be of a certain color, often built in Spanish villa style or with actual coral, grass must be cut, and even the interior rooms are supposed to be monitored and approved when a resident (or in this case I could refer to as a “subject”) repaints their living room.

Where are these residential on-lookers, peering over our shoulders and controlling the switchboards of society’s maintenance?

If you were to ask just anybody walking their dog or terminating scorpions in their front lawn they would likely tell you they’re among us, in the lots behind our homes and peeping over our fences on each side, clogging our drains, tying up our plumbing lines and reeking from the sewers below our feet.

In all sense of the word, innovation is based on all of our duty to the greater good. The only thing to fear is fear itself…The only thing to fear, is ourselves.

This principle of neighborhood watch was taken into action by the book with a decades old pharmaceutical store with a landmark marquee in caps locked red lettering that reads DRUGS, visible from all four corners of the intersection. Dr. Bob said the city wanted to remove the sign because of its implications, despite not realizing people have shopped there since the 1950s. Even during the red scare, McCarthy and Eisenhower era shoppers fought through and survived, not batting an eye of suspicion when looking at the sign that possibly the other kind of drugs were in the community (As of late the sunscreen Coppertone’s iconic little girl with her rear end exposed remains on a billboard in Miami, despite efforts to bring it down because little girls are evidently a source of obscenity, either to other youngsters or the sick minded).

Not far from this standing symbolic sociological spectacle of great wonders is a Goodwill store, the last resort for Diego’s sports coat, and my own thought provoking segment on the subject of outsourcing.

Many of the clothing items keep the homeless or bargaining “thrifters” warm and content in Miami and throughout the states. The clothes come from all around, people’s dusty attics, cluttered garages, and hoarder’s storages. At some point, many of these items came from this controversial backdrop of a political subject that will very likely be mentioned in shades during the ’12 Obama/Romney election, specifically outsourcing to sweatshops and factories. It makes me think of the early days of the industrial revolution and the amendment that was passed preventing severe labor for women, children, and everyone alike. These thoughts on a clothesline from a store in America seem out of range, but they only occur to me because inside the Goodwill store there is a vast abundance of Hispanics. And I’m to believe that many of them are from places like Cuba, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico, just to name a few. Maybe they weren’t sowing and stitching and ailing for hours over some clothing, maybe they were raised in Miami their entire life and this is irrational. But this didn’t suffice me with comfort when the possibility still existed that these could have been those same people. I’m just a random on-looker,

shopping as one out of many, and just taking a moment to think and write about this stack of dominos falling, a peddle to ripples in water. Maybe it’s just a series of hyphenated, interrupting thoughts that will never surmount to any kind of physical surplus with a face value or meaning on the market.

But so long as I’m entertaining myself with this sick notion, that overlooked outsourcing is best described by a rabid beast lurching for the kill on a wild prey…and so long as the system is efficient then there’s no second thought about it, no afterthought or dilemma of having a conscience for the possibility of these people. The only proof we have of this nasty modern day imperialism is the bloody feathers hanging from the hinges of the beast’s mouth.

Diego didn’t find his coat, which seems less of a valuable point in comparison. If there was to be a fine dinner on this boat he could try and use mine by just entering dinner at a later time. Smuggling Diego into fine dining was less of a worry than the bogus bottle of Listerine in Dr. Bob’s bag we were suppose to get onboard. The label read cherry mint flavor, but in actuality was filled to the top with Gosling’s black seal rum. To boot, we also had an ice pack full of Grey Goose Vodka, and a dozen or so water bottles stuffed in the doctor’s luggage as decoys. One wrong look and nervous jitter and it would all be over in a heartbeat, the dogs would come out, the latex strip search gloves, that familiar mental trauma...

We pulled off the road for breakfast, a cheap eat with wooden tiles on the walls at the bar, pennants for Miami sports teams and televisions at opposite ends. The waitress was reluctant to have us combine tables together for easy access for Dr. Bob and his cane. Besides the needles full of insulin the doctor had his mix and match of random pills he throws back, leaving us wondering if he’s on the verge of overloading his heart and falling forward onto his plate. The pills are actually to prevent just that from happening, despite misleading appearances. Along with my compulsive cup of coffee I tried the bagel with nova cream cheese, a Jewish simple, with locks of salmon and scrambled eggs on the side.

We were well aware that the Miami Heat had won the NBA Finals the Thursday prior, and we were also aware that the black tumbling brute would have to make the trip across the expressway, across Biscayne Boulevard where the pandemonium was going down in the parade, to the only road (Port Blvd) with access to the ship on Dodge Island. What we were unaware of was just how difficult this was going to be.

Those televisions at the bar opposite each other were wrapping up footage of the parade, with LeBron sitting up front on the bus, straddling the trophy up to the doors of American Airlines Arena. So much we figured, the worst would be over, despite Dr. Bob still receiving one of his many phone calls that “downtown is spilling over with screaming Haitians right now”, and the city buzzing with talk, like the lady behind our booth over my shoulder, “LeBron had his chance in Cleveland…he ain’t Jesus.” Was Jesus who they needed lacing up and saving that northern town full of exhausting smoke stacks? At that point the parade was just an afterthought, and not something that would

come to define how we spent the next four hours in traffic, scrambling for a route to get out, with our faces melting from direct stress compression on the pressure points.

Sitting on the 395 Dolphin Expressway exit ramp for those punishing hours thinking of what exactly caused all of this gave me the opportunity here to share those dark thoughts that I had just began perceiving weeks before when Miami had finally had their moment in the spotlight, winning it all with the world’s most controversial role player in professional sports. And it was these early conceived thoughts that I circulated under a cool demeanor, not trying to lose it all next to Dr. Bob and Diego. All seemed hopeless when Dr. Bob made several more phone calls, the first to the police, who sent speeding cruisers almost immediately to try and figure what was going on in a city that seemed to be oblivious while directing traffic in a single direction. As easy as the concept seems to exit on the exit ramp, cars miles back were backing up onto the shoulder and reversing their way down a two mile strip, trying to avoid the eye of a storming nightmare. As the hours expired we began worrying if we’d ever make it. Dr. Bob’s other important phone call was to the cruiseline, asking if they’d leave us behind if we weren’t there by 5 sharp. No reassuring answers were given. “Are you in a rental car sir?” “No, why is that relevant?” “Because if you were I’d tell you to grab your bags and ditch the car on the highway.” We looked on to a man below us stumbling in downtown, rolling two bags behind him and dropping three others as he tried to walk.

It’s about right there that I should stop holding back on my thoughts of what lead us to this, written in a midnight haze: Diego and I began to see this parade in the making weeks before during Harborfest in downtown Norfolk. The Heat were clobbering the Celtics, and we watched it unfold in front of us on another TV screen in an Irish pub while drinking Jameson’s whiskey.

Too many drunken sailors were about, whistling at women and taking up all the space on the streetcars late that night. The two of us just ended up on a bland bus ride full of people riding home, drunk and disturbed with everyone around us.

Two years of hard work and press coverage have finally paid off and cashed in dividends for the Miami Heat, as they win the big one. A perfect example of free enterprise and the free agent market in the United States, where if you want a large house and a ring to go with it you can sign your name on the dotted line and come on down to South Beach. One of the perks of the position itself is having your own tab on ESPN’s homepage titled “Heat Index”, something the Fox News of sports (fair and balanced and redundant) dedicates to no other team in the sports business. The pasty heavyweight correspondent appears he should be covering hot dog eating contests on Coney Island, and he’s ready to belch his opinions along with an entire staff of writers and sportscasters whose ranging resume’ of credibility is forced retirement from playing the sport and a world English thesaurus.
