Airmandiscoverspassion throughInter-Service TransferProgram

U.S. Air ForceSeniorAirman TaiquonaConner, aservicesAirmanwiththe6th ForceSupportSquadron, neverexpectedtofindhercallingthroughanunexpectedjourneythatbegan withahighschoolwhim.

“I wasinhighschool,randomlytryingto getoutof classoneday,” Connerrecalled. “My friend wastakingtheASVAB[Armed Services VocationalAptitudeBattery],andItagged along, notthinkinganythingwouldcomeof it.”

Initially, Connerhadhersightssetonabasketballcareer, withdreamsofplayingincollegeandeventuallyjoiningthe Women’sNationalBasketballAssociation. Fate, however, haddifferentplansinstoreforher, asshesoon discovered.

“I wasknownforplayingbasketballthroughouthighschool,” Connersaid.“Mycoach,who playedintheWNBA,guidedmethroughthe scoutingprocess, butakneeinjurymadeit clearthatabasketballcareer wasn’tinthe cards.”

AttheDepartmentoftheAir Force’sCoachingsite, memberscanexplorehowtofindaprofessionalcoachandbecomeacoach.Additional resourcesare availabletosupportthedevelopmentoftheDAF’sinternal coachingculture.

Coachingisastructured, formalized,goal-orientedprocesswhere a certifiedcoachfocusesonhelpingindividualsovercomespecific challenges, developnewskillsandreachdesiredoutcomes. ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS)—SecretaryoftheAir Force Frank KendallannouncedtheAir Task Forceasthenextstep in theAir Force’s ForceGenerationmodelduringtheAirandSpace ForcesAssociation’s 2023Air, SpaceandCyberConference, Sept.11inNationalHarbor, Maryland.

“Majorinitiativesinthe U.S. Air ForceandSpace Force, suchasAir Force ForceGenerationintheAir Forceandtheevolvingallocationsof responsibilityacrossSpace Forcefieldcommandsaremovesintheright direction,” Kendallsaid.“On Friday, IapprovedtheAir Forcecreation ofthreeAir Task Forcestoserveaspilotsinordertoexperimentwith waystomoreeffectivelyprovidedeployable, integratedunits—twofor U.S. CentralCommandandonefor U.S. Indo-PacificCommand…they areamajorstepintherightdirection,andwewilllearnfromthisexperience.”

Aspartofanongoingefforttobuild high-endreadinessforthefuture, theAir Forcecontinuestoevolvethe wayitpresentsitsforces throughtheAFFORGENmodel.

WhatAirmenneedtoknowabout the Air Task Force

-The ATFprovidestheAir Forcewithadefinableunitofactionata sustainablepaceforemployingandposturingforces.

-Thefirst ATFswillentertheAFFORGENcycleinSummer2024 andwilldeploybeginning in fiscal year2026.

-TheseAirmenwhichformthe ATFswillteam,trainanddeploytogetherthroughtheAFFORGENcycle.

-As ATFsarebuilt,AirmenwillbesourcedfromacrosstheAir Force. Furtherdetailswillbe availableinthecomingmonths.

In addition to adisciplinedforcegeneration model,the Air Force isrefiningAgileCombatEmploymenttactics, Multi-CapableAirmen training, A-Staffconstructs, andimplementingaMission Commandapproachtocommandandcontrol.

Air Task Forceconstruct

The ATFwillconsistofaCommandElementwithanattachedexpeditionaryA-Staff;anExpeditionaryAirBaseSquadrontoprovideBase OperatingSupport; and MissionGeneration ForceElementswithattachedMissionSustainment TeamstofacilitateAgileCombatEmployment.

-TheCommandElementwillbethe ATF’sdedicatedleadershipteam throughouttheentireAFFORGENcycle, focusedonbuilding, training, certifyinganddeployingacohesiveunitposturedforsuccessacrossthe spectrumofconflict.TheCommandElementwillconsistofthecom-

“It’sessentialtounderstandthedifferencebetweencoachingand mentoringtomaximizethecapabilitiesofbothmethodologies,” Moore said.“Mentoringisarelationship-basedapproachthatcentersonsharingknowledge, experienceandadvicewhilehelping menteesachieve theircareergoals. Mentoringrelationshipsmay belonger-termandaddressabroadrangeofpersonalandprofessional growthareas. Acoach encouragesindividualstodeveloptheirownapproachestoa challenge throughthoughtfulquestioningandareshorter-terminnature.”

Mooresummarizedthetechniques’divergencebyillustratingadifferenceintheguide’srole.

“Essentially, amentortalkstoyouwithadvice;acoachempowers you,” shesaid.

Whilementoringisthemorefamiliar practice in theDAF, creating a coachingculturecanenhanceeffortstodevelopthetotalforce.

THE

Theservicesbelievecoachingcansignificantlyimpactone’sprofessionalandpersonallife. Acoach’sobjectiveguidancecanhelpindividualsovercome challenges, developnewskillsandachievedesired outcomesmoreefficiently. Coachingcanalsofosterself-awarenessand resilience, enablingAirmenandGuardianstoadaptandthriveinarapidly changingenvironment.

Leadershiprecognizesthatbecomingacoachrequiresdedication,training andagenuinedesiretohelpothersgrow Coachesenhancetheforce’s effectivenessandadaptability by assistingotherstorealizetheirpotential.

“Throughcoaching, theservicescanfosteracultureofcontinuous growth,ensuringourmembersare readytofaceany challengesandupholdourAirandSpaceSuperiority,” Millersaid.

recruiter, inquiringaboutherfutureplans. Withherbasketballaspirationsfading, militaryservicestartedto appearasaviablecareeroption.Twoweekslater, she embarkedonBasicCombatTraining, adecisionshehad keptfromhermotheruntiljustaweekbeforeherdeparture.

“Ididn’teventellmymomuntilaweekbefore I shippedout,” Connersaid. “She wasobviouslyupsetbecausesheandIhadbothplannedonacareer inbasketball,butwithmykneeinjury, Ihadtomakea choicethat wasbetterinthelongrun.”

DuringhertenureintheArmy, Connerworkedas a humanresourcesspecialist, adaptingtovariousrolesas required.However, shefeltthatshe wasmerelyhoning herskills andyearnedforthefreedomtoexpressherself more fully, a characteristicsheconsidered vital.

TurningtotheAir Force, Connerfoundapotentialsolution.Sheappreciatedthestructureandsecurity ofmilitarylife, hopingthattheAir Force wouldgrantherthe personalgrowthanddevelopmentshesought,bothasan individualandanAirman.

ConnermetwithanAir Forcerecruiterwhointroducedhertotheinter-servicetransferprogram,which offeredhertheopportunitytoswitchbranches. After a yearofcivilianlife, sheembarkedonanew chapter, enrollinginanintroductorycourseonAir Forcefundamentalsat JointBaseSanAntonio, Texas.

“ThereisnoBMT[BasicMilitaryTraining]ortechnicalschoolforservicesAirmenwithpriormilitaryservice,” Connerexplained.“Wedoaone-weekcourseon thebasicsoftheAir Forcebeforewe’resenttoourfirst basetolearn onthejob. Everything Iknow wastaught through people, notatextbook.”

AsConnerdelvedintoher chosencareerfield,she was presentedwiththeuniqueopportunityto selectherpreferredworkplace:lodging, diningfacility, fitnesscenter, ormortuaryaffairs. Unconventionally, she chosetheoften-overlookedmortuaryaffairs.

“Whentheoptiontoworkinmortuarycameup, they said theyweren’tgoingtosendmeunlessI wascomfortabledoingthattypeof work,” Connerrecounted.“Itook itbecause I’mthetypeofpersontodoeverythingtothefullest.”

Conner wasassignedtoDoverAir ForceBase, Delaware, forasix-monthtasking, whereshedelved into paperwork,metwithbereavedfamilies, andhandledremains. There, shediscoveredher truepassion.

“Iinstantlyfellinlove,” Connersaid.“I’mathrill seeker, andwhat’smorethrillingthanthat?Iworked alongsidetheembalmerstopreparethebodiesfortheir funeralservice, andtheyrecognizedthetalentIhad.”

“I’mstillnew toMacDill, soI’mlearningmyrole here,” Connersaid.“But,Ihaveaplanformyfuture. I wantto completemycollegeeducationbeforetransitioninginto thereserves. Then,after a yearof internships, I wantto makemortuaryaffairsmycareer.”

ConnerexemplifiesanAirmanunafraidtotake chancesinpursuitofherpassion.Hertime in theArmyprovidedherwithfundamentalmilitaryknowledge, while herAir Forcejourneyledhertoafulfilling careershe’s passionateabout.

Severaloftheservices-relatedamenitiesonbaserunsimilarlytocivilianbusinessesandfacesimilarmanningconstraints.

“Wendy Foster[6thFSSMarketingdirector]andIteameduptorepresentMacDill’sNAFjobs at mostofthe localcareerfairs,” Mousesaid. “Recentlywe’vestartedtoworkwithdifferentoffbaseentitiestofill our vacanciesbecausea lotofpeopleoutsidethegatedon’tknowabout alltheopportunitieswehave available.”

Foster, likemanyAir Forcecivilians, initially developedherprofessionalcareerintereststhroughvocationaleducation.

“ThereasonIgotexcitedaboutthisprogramisbecauseI’maproduct of early vocationaleducation,” Fostersaid.“I wasinterestedingraphic design inhigh school and wasabletotakecoursesincommercial art, graphicsandprinting. Thatinitiallyled tothedevelopmentofmylifelongcareerinmarketingandadvertising.”

Lookingtodevelopfuturegovernmentemployeesinthesame way shehad, Fosterturnedtowards communityorganizationswithsimilar goals. Theduo’sfirstinteractionwiththeFCAcameatabusinesspanel meetingwheretheywereintroducedtothestudents.

“Thedifferencewesaw wasthestudentswerereadytolook fora job,” Fostersaid.“Theyhadaresumeinhand,theyweredressedforsuccess andtheywereaskinginformedquestionsabouttheworkplaceandopportunities weoffered.”

Followingthefair, theteamreachedouttotheacademytobuild a strongerconnectionandencouragemore graduatingseniorstoapply.

“Wehosted[FCA]leaderstoshow them whatwehavetooffer, and

theywereimpressed,” Mousesaid.“Ourgoal wasto get abigger amount oftimewiththestudentstobeabletoshowcaseallofthedifferentcareeropportunitiesacrossthe installation.”

Accordingto Foster, whatimpressedtheteammostabouttheacademy wastheirwillingnessto changethecurrentculture.

“Thisprogramgivesstudentsa chancetopickand choose, toask themselves‘I’minterestedincollegebutnotsurewhatI’minterested inorhowtopayforit.’” Fostersaid.“Thisprogramintroducesthemto differentindustrieswheretheymighthave aninterestandletsthem decidetheirownpath.Inmany cases, theseindustriesalsoassistwith tuitionreimbursementorpayingfortrainingcertifications.”

The6thFSScontinuouslyencouragestheir civiliansto professionally developusingentry-leveljobsassteppingstonestohigher-levelpositions, claimed Foster.

“Ithinktoomanypeoplelookatservice-relatedpositionsingeneralandsay, ‘you’rejustinfood service’or‘you’rejustamaintenance worker,’” Fostersaid.“Wheninrealitytheseemployeesareprofessionallydevelopingonthejobwhile walkingdownapathleadingthem intomanagingthesefacilities, andtheirpreviousexperienceis goingto makethemevenbetterinthefuture.”

Theduoleavesapplicantswithapieceofadvice, “Thebiggestthing welookforispassion,” Mouseshared.

“Welookforthatexcitementandthatpassionbecausethat’swhat it’sgoingtotakeforsomeonetostaythe courseinaservice-related civiliancareer,” Fostersaid.“Civilianscanprovidethecontinuitythat staysforyears.”
