Airman discovers passion through Inter-Service Transfer Program

by Airman 1st Class Zachary Foster 6th Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Taiquona Conner, a services Airman with the 6th Force Support Squadron, never expected to find her calling through an unexpected journey that began with a high school whim.

“I was in high school, randomly trying to get out of class one day,” Conner recalled. “My friend was taking the ASVAB [Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery], and I tagged along, not thinking anything would come of it.”

Initially, Conner had her sights set on a basketball career, with dreams of playing in college and eventually joining the Women’s National Basketball Association. Fate, however, had different plans in store for her, as she soon discovered.

“I was known for playing basketball throughout high school,” Conner said. “My coach, who played in the WNBA, guided me through the scouting process, but a knee injury made it clear that a basketball career wasn’t in the cards.”

6th FSS partners with FCA to hire local graduates

With over 4,000 civilian employees who work at MacDill Air Force Base. The civilian force plays an important role in contributing to the 6th Air Refueling Wing’s mission.

In an effort to bolster community relationships and source new employees for civilian jobs on base, the 6th Force Support Squadron has partnered with the Future Career Academy.

FCA is a Tampa-based program, first introduced in 2015. Their goal is to connect students and adults to in-demand, living wage, entry-level jobs with long-term career growth and sustainable employment.

MacDill’s partnership with the FCA started following the COVID-19 pandemic, in an attempt to fill open service positions to return the base to full functionality as quickly as possible.

“Coming out of COVID, we had 80 to 100 slots to fill,” said Gail Mouse, 6th FSS Human Resources officer. “Now we’re down to 40 and we’ve maintained about that level, but we’re continuing to look for new motivated civilians See GRADS, Page 17

Department of the Air Force launches coaching website Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS)¬—A new Department of the Air Force website supports the development of a coaching culture throughout the service by offering a variety of resources tailored to the needs of Airmen and Guardians.

At the Department of the Air Force’s Coaching site, members can explore how to find a professional coach and become a coach. Additional resources are available to support the development of the DAF’s internal coaching culture.

Coaching is a structured, formalized, goal-oriented process where a certified coach focuses on helping individuals overcome specific challenges, develop new skills and reach desired outcomes. Coaches employ active listening, powerful questioning, and feedback tools and techniques, empowering individuals to find their own solutions to certain challenges

and build self-awareness.

“Coaching is a crucial component for our Total Force development ecosystem,” said Lt. Gen. Caroline Miller, deputy chief of staff for Manpower, Personnel, and Services. “It empowers our members to unlock their greatest potential, generate personal growth and better contribute to the service’s mission.”

Katharine Kelley, deputy chief of space operations for Human Capital, expanded on coaching culture’s benefit to the DAF. “Coaching is an investment that will pay dividends for our people,” she said. “It challenges members to self-reflect on their strengths and grow in new ways personally and professionally.”

According to Crystal Moore, director of Air Force Force Development, coaching and mentoring have key differences that each contribute to individual growth.

Secretary of the Air Force announces Air Task Force model

Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS)—Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall announced the Air Task Force as the next step in the Air Force’s Force Generation model during the Air and Space Forces Association’s 2023 Air, Space and Cyber Conference, Sept. 11 in National Harbor, Maryland.

“Major initiatives in the U.S. Air Force and Space Force, such as Air Force Force Generation in the Air Force and the evolving allocations of responsibility across Space Force field commands are moves in the right direction,” Kendall said. “On Friday, I approved the Air Force creation of three Air Task Forces to serve as pilots in order to experiment with ways to more effectively provide deployable, integrated units — two for U.S. Central Command and one for U.S. Indo-Pacific Command … they are a major step in the right direction, and we will learn from this experience.”

As part of an ongoing effort to build high-end readiness for the future, the Air Force continues to evolve the way it presents its forces through the AFFORGEN model.

What Airmen need to know about the Air Task Force - The ATF provides the Air Force with a definable unit of action at a sustainable pace for employing and posturing forces.

- The first ATFs will enter the AFFORGEN cycle in Summer 2024 and will deploy beginning in fiscal year 2026.

- These Airmen which form the ATFs will team, train and deploy together through the AFFORGEN cycle.

- As ATFs are built, Airmen will be sourced from across the Air Force.

Further details will be available in the coming months.

In addition to a disciplined force generation model, the Air Force is refining Agile Combat Employment tactics, Multi-Capable Airmen training, A-Staff constructs, and implementing a Mission Command approach to command and control.

Air Task Force construct The ATF will consist of a Command Element with an attached expeditionary A-Staff; an Expeditionary Air Base Squadron to provide Base Operating Support; and Mission Generation Force Elements with attached Mission Sustainment Teams to facilitate Agile Combat Employment.

“It’s essential to understand the difference between coaching and mentoring to maximize the capabilities of both methodologies,” Moore said. “Mentoring is a relationship-based approach that centers on sharing knowledge, experience and advice while helping mentees achieve their career goals. Mentoring relationships may be longer-term and address a broad range of personal and professional growth areas. A coach encourages individuals to develop their own approaches to a challenge through thoughtful questioning and are shorter-term in nature.”

Moore summarized the techniques’ divergence by illustrating a difference in the guide’s role.

“Essentially, a mentor talks to you with advice; a coach empowers you,” she said.

While mentoring is the more familiar practice in the DAF, creating a coaching culture can enhance efforts to develop the total force.

A coach’s objective guidance can help individuals overcome challenges, develop new skills and achieve desired outcomes more efficiently. Leadership recognizes that becoming a coach requires dedication, training and a genuine desire to help others grow. Coaches enhance the force’s effectiveness and adaptability by assisting others to realize their potential.

“Through coaching, the services can foster a culture of continuous growth, ensuring our members are ready to face any challenges and uphold our Air and Space Superiority,” Miller said.

mander, deputy commander, a senior enlisted leader and an expeditionary A-Staff.

- The ATF commander will be a colonel; the ATF deputy commander will be a lieutenant colonel who has successfully completed at least one squadron command assignment; and the senior enlisted leader will be a command chief master sergeant.

- The A-Staff will assist the ATF commander by providing staff support in interacting with higher headquarters and fulfilling the commander’s responsibility to provide resourcing, policy, oversight and guidance.

“Concepts like Multi-Capable Airmen and Agile Combat Employment are aligned with meeting the pacing challenge,” Kendall said.

The ATF model represents the next step in adopting a more modular organization of teams, which generate through the AFFORGEN cycle together and then deploy as a unit to maximize effectiveness.

recruiter, inquiring about her future plans. With her basketball aspirations fading, military service started to appear as a viable career option. Two weeks later, she embarked on Basic Combat Training, a decision she had kept from her mother until just a week before her departure.

“I didn’t even tell my mom until a week before I shipped out,” Conner said. “She was obviously upset because she and I had both planned on a career in basketball, but with my knee injury, I had to make a choice that was better in the long run.”

During her tenure in the Army, Conner worked as a human resources specialist, adapting to various roles as required. However, she felt that she was merely honing her skills and yearned for the freedom to express herself more fully, a characteristic she considered vital.

Turning to the Air Force, Conner found a potential solution. She appreciated the structure and security of military life, hoping that the Air Force would grant her the personal growth and development she sought, both as an individual and an Airman.

Conner met with an Air Force recruiter who introduced her to the inter-service transfer program, which offered her the opportunity to switch branches. After a year of civilian life, she embarked on a new chapter, enrolling in an introductory course on Air Force fundamentals at Joint Base San Antonio, Texas.

“There is no BMT [Basic Military Training] or technical school for services Airmen with prior military service,” Conner explained. “We do a one-week course on the basics of the Air Force before we’re sent to our first base to learn on the job. Everything I know was taught through people, not a textbook.”

As Conner delved into her chosen career field, she was presented with the unique opportunity to select her preferred workplace: lodging, dining facility, fitness center, or mortuary affairs. Unconventionally, she chose the often-overlooked mortuary affairs.

“When the option to work in mortuary came up, they said they weren’t going to send me unless I was comfortable doing that type of work,” Conner recounted. “I took it because I’m the type of person to do everything to the fullest.”

Conner was assigned to Dover Air Force Base, Delaware, for a six-month tasking, where she delved into paperwork, met with bereaved families, and handled remains. There, she discovered her true passion.

“I instantly fell in love,” Conner said. “I’m a thrill seeker, and what’s more thrilling than that? I worked alongside the embalmers to prepare the bodies for their funeral service, and they recognized the talent I had.”

Conner’s remarkable affinity for her work led to exceptional opportunities beyond the typical experiences of a services Airman.

“They [the embalmers] were more hands-on with me,” Conner noted. “They let me help them more. They even helped me choose a school to learn embalming professionally. The director even offered me a civilian position, once I obtain my license and degree.”

Today, Conner serves in the fitness center at MacDill AFB, Florida, as she works toward her ultimate goal of becoming an embalming specialist.

“I’m still new to MacDill, so I’m learning my role here,” Conner said. “But, I have a plan for my future. I want to complete my college education before transitioning into the reserves. Then, after a year of internships, I want to make mortuary affairs my career.”

Conner exemplifies an Airman unafraid to take chances in pursuit of her passion. Her time in the Army provided her with fundamental military knowledge, while her Air Force journey led her to a fulfilling career she’s passionate about.

MacDill defenders honor 1st Lt. Joseph Helton, a fallen hero story and photos by Airman 1st Class Sterling Sutton 6th Air Refueling Wing

I

n recognition of fallen hero, 1st Lt. Joseph Helton, Team MacDill hosted its 14th annual memorial ceremony and 5K run on base Sept. 13, 2023.

Helton, a member of the 6th Security Forces Squadron, was killed during a deployment to Iraq in 2009, when a vehicle he was traveling in struck an improvised explosive device.

For those at MacDill who worked alongside Helton, the remembrance events not only serve as a way to honor him, but to also show support to his family.

“I was a SSgt at the 6 SFS when Lt. Helton joined the 6th SFS,” said Lt. Elmer Smith, 6th SFS, supervisory police officer, “ These events are a way to take time to think about those defenders we have lost and cherish what we have. I always enjoy seeing his mother Jiffy smiling and motivating the next generation of Airmen!”

Helton’s unwavering commitment to his squadron and his dedication to the mission has continued to leave a mark on service members assigned to MacDill.

“Lt. Helton’s story is a very inspirational reminder that at the core of our military is a culture of selflessness and sacrifice, said Airman James Tobin, 6th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron public health technician. “It was an honor to speak with his mother and hear about the lives he impacted.”

Every year since his passing, the 6th SFS and personnel assigned to MacDill, have hosted the memorial and 5 k to pay tribute to Helton’s heroism and leadership. This year, the base also held a fitness competition, golf tournament and the event continues to grow.

“The Helton Hall Memorial Run was a great and challenging event to honor 1st Lt. Helton,” said Airman 1st Class Ercy Ruiz Navarro, 6th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron public health technician.

“Those who served with him really pushed his motto ‘Don’t be a weak sauce’ and I look forward to participating next year”.

Helton’s sacrifice serves as a reminder of the high cost of freedom and his memory continues to inspire acts of service.

to fill those roles.”

According to Mouse, most of the civilian careers within the Force Support Squadron fall under nonappropriated funded positions, meaning they’re not federally funded, but paid for by funds generated by the activities. Several of the services-related amenities on base run similarly to civilian businesses and face similar manning constraints.

“Wendy Foster [6th FSS Marketing director] and I teamed up to represent MacDill’s NAF jobs at most of the local career fairs,” Mouse said.

“Recently we’ve started to work with different off base entities to fill our vacancies because a lot of people outside the gate don’t know about all the opportunities we have available.”

Foster, like many Air Force civilians, initially developed her professional career interests through vocational education.

“The reason I got excited about this program is because I’m a product of early vocational education,” Foster said. “I was interested in graphic design in high school and was able to take courses in commercial art, graphics and printing. That initially led to the development of my lifelong career in marketing and advertising.”

Looking to develop future government employees in the same way she had, Foster turned towards community organizations with similar goals. The duo’s first interaction with the FCA came at a business panel meeting where they were introduced to the students.

“The difference we saw was the students were ready to look for a job,” Foster said. “They had a resume in hand, they were dressed for success and they were asking informed questions about the workplace and opportunities we offered.”

Following the fair, the team reached out to the academy to build a stronger connection and encourage more graduating seniors to apply.

“We hosted [FCA] leaders to show them what we have to offer, and

they were impressed,” Mouse said. “Our goal was to get a bigger amount of time with the students to be able to showcase all of the different career opportunities across the installation.”

According to Foster, what impressed the team most about the academy was their willingness to change the current culture.

“This program gives students a chance to pick and choose, to ask themselves ‘I’m interested in college but not sure what I’m interested in or how to pay for it.’” Foster said. “This program introduces them to different industries where they might have an interest and lets them decide their own path. In many cases, these industries also assist with tuition reimbursement or paying for training certifications.”

The 6th FSS continuously encourages their civilians to professionally develop using entry-level jobs as stepping stones to higher-level positions, claimed Foster.

“I think too many people look at service-related positions in general and say, ‘you’re just in food service’ or ‘you’re just a maintenance worker,’” Foster said. “When in reality these employees are professionally developing on the job while walking down a path leading them into managing these facilities, and their previous experience is going to make them even better in the future.”

The duo leaves applicants with a piece of advice, “The biggest thing we look for is passion,” Mouse shared.

“We look for that excitement and that passion because that’s what it’s going to take for someone to stay the course in a service-related civilian career,” Foster said. “Civilians can provide the continuity that stays for years.”

Remembrance run

Personnel assigned to MacDill Air Force Base, Florida participate in a POW/MIA memorial run, Sept.

14. During the event, service members from across the installation kept the POW/MIA guidon in continual motion for 24 hours straight. The ceremony was held in commemoration of all service members who were prisoners of war and those who are still missing in action.
