Airmen assigned to the 6th Civil Engineer Squadron explosive ordnance disposal unit wash their equipment during a chemical ordnance response assessment at MacDill Air Force Base Aug. 21. EOD technicians with the 6th CES were evaluated on their proficiency in rendering chemical ordnances safe in any environment. The technicians wore a Hazardous Materials Protection Level B suit which is composed of a chemical resistant material with a hood, a selfcontained breathing apparatus, inner and outer chemical resistant gloves, and chemical resistant safety boots.

Why I serve: Staff Sgt Juan Ramirez Ceballos

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Juan “RC” RamirezCeballos is an in-flight refueler with the 91st Air Refueling Squadron here. After retraining from the services career field, he has found his calling on the KC-135 Stratotanker.

“I was born in Armenia, Colombia, and I was brought to America when I was seven years old,” said RC. “I initially enlisted when I was 18 without a specific Air Force job and spent my first four years in the services field. I joined the Air Force to give back to the country that has given me everything.”

RC enlisted in 2016, where he received his first assignment to Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina. He has one take-away after learning to do every job in the services field.

“We are all a part of something greater,” said RC. “My favorite part about my job there was how important it was. Everything we did, day in and day out, it mattered. The training exercises, the jobs we do, it affects not only ourselves, it affects the whole world.”

While working in the mortuary affairs office in Charleston, RC was a part of the search and recovery emergency response team. When a

MacDill supports marriages for success

Eighteen service members and their spouses attended a marriage retreat that was hosted by the MacDill Chapel in Maitland, Florida, Aug. 4-6.

The couples went through a relationship education program designed to teach them practical hands-on skills essential to build a healthy, thriving marriage. The skills taught at the retreat have benefitted military members and their families by teaching skills for better communication and saving marriages.

“We hit a wall in our marriage and this helped us tremendously to improve,” said one participant. “The resources helped us work together more as a couple and as parents. We had a lot of tension with each other by not having

Air Force announces CY24 promotion board schedule, aligns to officer SCODs Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS)—The Air Force announced the 2024 promotion board schedule Aug. 22, which marks the transition to align most promotion boards with their associated evaluation closeout dates.

With the completion of establishing officer static closeout dates, or SCODs, this year, next year’s board schedule takes an incremental step to a predictable schedule that ensures officers have an evaluation within six months of promotion boards. The alignment of the evaluation within six months of the promotion board was already in place for all Air Force enlisted promotion boards.

“Maximizing alignment of promotion boards to SCODs represents a strategic step toward enhancing our talent management decisions,” said Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower, Personnel and Services Lt. Gen. Caroline Miller. “This also provides transparency and consistency that are cornerstones of our promotion and evaluation system.”

During this transition year, the major LAF-A/C/I/F/N boards that

would have convened toward the end 2024 will shift to convene in January/February 2025, resulting in no major board in 2024. Eligibility, based on dates of rank and projected pin-on dates will remain unchanged. All future major LAF-A/C/I/F/N boards are planned to convene the same time each year.

Additionally, the lieutenant colonel LAF-A/C/I/F/N/X boards that would have convened in spring of 2025, will now convene in November 2024, resulting in two lieutenant colonel LAF-A/C/I/F/N/X boards in 2024. Like the major’s board, eligibility, based on dates of rank and projected pin-on dates will remain unchanged. All future lieutenant colonel LAF-A/C/I/F/N/X boards are planned to convene around the same time each year.

The changes to align Air Force officer promotion boards with SCODs were completed without impacting Air Force enlisted promotion boards and met all the Space Force’s promotion timing requirements.

NEWS/FEATURES Warrior Heart culture takes center stage at Joint Base MDL

JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J.—Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst hosted Warrior Heart training, aligning with the readiness line of effort initiated by Air Mobility Command commander, Gen. Mike Minihan.

The two-day event held on Aug. 22-23, highlighted the AMC-wide effort to promote Warrior Heart culture and introduced Airmen, spouses and civilians to the concept of mindfulness and how it is integral to their performance, well-being, and ability to thrive through adversity.

“What we’re trying to get after with this effort is a cultural change,” said retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col., Dr. Jannell MacAulay, Ph.D., leadership and performance consultant. “It’s a new way of seeing how we perform and how we face adversity.”

Conceived by Dr. MacAulay and former U.S. Air Force Chief Master

Sgt. Anthony Brinkley, resiliency training coach and author of ‘You Can’t Run Away from You,’ Warrior Heart is built upon four foundational pillars: resilience, self-care, mindfulness, and performance. Rather than simply creating a program, the primary objective is to dismantle stigmas and obstacles that impede the cultivation of a mentally robust force “A lot of times other programs are talking to people and telling them what to think and what to do,” Brinkley said. “Warrior Heart is different in the sense that it has an introspective aspect where you evaluate the effectiveness of your actions and how your attributes are moving your life forward.”

The program seeks to enhance the performance of members by not only providing information, but teaching individuals how to apply information in order to transform an organization.

ile training platform to increase understanding of each other and redefine our culture to ensure our forces are prepared for the next fight.”

Throughout the nine seminars, the Warrior Heart initiative focused on taking leaders and teams through a transformational journey of self-reflection to learn actionable skills to master their internal environment, command their mindset, and elevate their performance.

“We want to start investing in training our minds like we invest in training our bodies and our craft,” MacAulay said. “Although this is kind of a new concept to military members, I’m trying to give them the tangible skillsets that will benefit not only themselves, but their Airmen.”

Leaders and teams are better poised to overcome challenges, elevate their performance, and foster enduring well-being within their units and lives by fostering a culture that prioritizes mindfulness.

“Warrior Heart creates a culture and climate focused on fine-tuning the mind, body, and craft to fortify the will to win,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Anthony Smith, commander for Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. “In order for us to fortify this will to win, we have to train and maintain our greatest asset—our Airmen.”

Kendall’s remarks touched upon the latest developments within the Department of the Air Force and future efforts to ensure the department remains focused and ready.

“I think we have to rethink everything — we have to rethink everything we’re doing, and thinking about, are we optimized for the fight that we might actually be called upon to go do, the stressing case, the pacing challenge as we call it in National Defense Strategy,” Kendall said. “I don’t think we’re there yet. I think you’re going to have to help us get there. You’re going to have to think about your units and your readiness and what you need to be doing to be more ready than you are today.”

Bass echoed this sentiment.

C-130 crashed in Georgia in 2018, he felt a renewed inspiration in the Air Force mission.

“I got a knock on my door one typical evening,” said RC. “My first sergeant was standing there and he said ‘Pack your bags, a C-130 just went down.’ Being a part of the search and recovery team, my job was to go down and recover the remains of not only the aircraft but the crew as well. I wanted to continue my service in the United States Air Force to honor those that have served and died before us. Retraining as a boom operator has allowed me to see the impact of what they do every day.”

RC loves that he can see the impact of his work as he’s doing it.

“Nothing compares to seeing a jet flying hundreds of miles per hour trailing about 30-40 feet behind you, counting on you to help them complete their mission. It’s exhilarating.”

RC has also been a First Term Airman Course instructor, where he mentored new Airmen coming into MacDill on the customs and courtesies, benefits, and ideas that they will need throughout their Air Force career.

“He is one of the best noncommissioned officers I’ve ever seen,” said Senior Master Sgt. Juan Aguirre-Alger, Airmen development advisor for the 6th Force Support Squadron.

“He has a superb dedication to the mission and embodied what an NCO should be. He spent each day making FTAC a better place.”

As someone who has served in multiple roles and careers, SSgt Ramirez-Ceballos believes in helping people and has seen the impact Airmen have on the world. He smiles when he puts his boots on every day, and remains excited to get out there and make a difference.

“I gave a talk earlier this morning and somebody asked me why I was getting ready for war with China,” Kendall said. “Why would I want war with China? I do not a war with China. Nobody wants a war with China, but the way to prevent one is for us to respond. Let them know we will fight, and if we do, we will win.”

Kendall closed his remarks with gratitude to enlisted Airmen and Guardians.

“I hadn’t gotten to know the NCO corps of the Air Force and the Space Force until more recently,” Kendall said. “I am incredibly impressed with you. You are amazingly professional, amazingly proficient technically, great team players — we have the human capital we need to be successful.”

Bass emphasized the need for standards and discipline amid rising security challenges.

“A strong military is a disciplined military and we are the strongest Air Force in the world because of our commitment to discipline and high standards,” Bass said.

“Our nation is counting on us to be the Force of the Future and ready now. As Airmen, we can never forget that we serve in a Profession of Arms — a higher calling.”

Bass also spoke on the Force of the Future and its role in national defense.

“Make no doubt about it,” Bass said. “The force we have today and the Force of the Future is an operational imperative.”

In keeping with the conference’s theme of “Back to Basics,” Bass provided additional details on the Force Development Ecosystem to help build the next generation of strong, informed, empowered enlisted Airmen.

“How we recruit, train and retain the talent that we need absolutely matters,” Bass said. “We must all focus on accelerating change and modernizing a force in a world that is rapidly changing. Our strength lies in our unity and our ability to grow beyond what got us here.”

communication tools. The tools we were given have tremendously helped us be able to talk to each other in ways we each understood.

The cards are helping us be able to give our child, a better future with parents who can communicate better.”

The program at the retreat used cards with helpful tools for communication and information on how to better understand your spouse.

“Wow! My wife and I had a great time during the retreat,” wrote an individual on the feedback form for the chapel. “We enjoyed the games, food, and lessons learned along the way!”

The course also taught military members to work through difficult times and guided participation nonaggressively, maximizing meaningful participation.

“Couples were able to bond with one another and discuss how they feel,” said Airman Nya Hargis, 6th Air Refueling Wing religious affairs airmen. “The chapel provided a space with limited distractions for an impactful retreat.”

The goal is to help couples learn better ways to communicate, meet their partner’s needs, resolve conflict, avoid dirty fighting, and understand that everyone’s personality plays a part in the relationship.

Stoinoff worked with several local law enforcement agencies to compile 11 base barment/driving suspension packages and finalized 25 cases for the judge advocate office.
