






FALLSCHURCH, Va. (AFNS)—The DepartmentofDefense isincreasingitssupplyoftheapprovedmonkeypoxvaccine, JYNNEOS, which allowsformoreAirmenandGuardiansathigherriskfortransmissionto accesspreventive measurestokeepthemselvessafe.
Concurrently, onAug. 9,the FoodandDrug Administration, allowedfor smallerdosestobegiventhroughintradermaladministration, whichisan injectionbetweenthelayersoftheskin.
“Byinjectingthevaccinejustbelowtheskinintheforearm, wecanelicit thesameantibodyresponseusingasmallerdosewhichincreasesvaccine availability,” saidLt.Col.DavidSayers, Chief, PreventiveMedicine, Air ForceMedicalReadinessAgency. “Thegoal,aswegetaccesstomorevaccines, istomakesureallAirmenandGuardiansatriskcangetvaccinated as soonaspossible.”
Thestandardmonkeypoxvaccineisatwo-dosevaccineadministered28 daysapartandistypicallyinjectedsubcutaneously, inthefattytissueover thetriceps.
AirmenandGuardianswhohavepreviouslyhadthesmallpoxvaccine needonlyonedoseofthemonkeypoxvaccine.
Aswithmanyothervaccines, therearesomeside effects.
“Asyourimmunesystemrespondstothevaccine, youmayexperience fever, fatigueorheadache,” saidSayers “Ifyoureceivethevaccineinthe forearm,youmayhaveitching, redness orsome skindiscoloration.”

Inresponse, the6thOperationsGroupfromMacDillAir ForceBase Fla., conducteda capstoneexercisefrom JointBaseCharleston, S.C. andBangor, Maine, Aug 23-26,incorporatingAgileCombatEmploymentdoctrineconcepts Thecapstonefollowedayearofculminatedlessonslearnedfromrefuelingexercisesoverseas and inthe U.S. whichincorporatedACE.
TheACEconceptunderpinstheAir Force’sabilitytomitigatetherisksofadversarialtechnologicaladvancesthroughmaneuverabilityandspeedtoprevailin conflict.
“Whenwestartedplanningayearago, Iwouldhaveneverimaginedthatthings couldhavegoneaswellastheyhave,” saidAir ForceCol. JonathanBurdick,6th OGcommander. “Hereweareayearlater, andwe’veturnedimagination into reality. ThisisnottheresultofanyoneAirmanoranyoneleader, butofawinning teamthat hascometogethertoproveitcandeliverairpoweranytime, anywhere.”

Thecapstoneexerciseincluded72-hoursofcontinuousairrefuelingoperations
andahistoric58-hourKC-135flightinasimulatedcontestedenvironmentfocused onanotionaltheaterofoperations.
Duringtheexercise, threetosixKC-135Stratotankeraircraftassignedtothe 91stand50thAirRefuelingSquadronswereairborneatanygiventimeandmore than30aircraftwererefueled. Additionally, severaldispersedairfieldsacrossthe easternhalfofthe U.S. servedasmaintenanceandhotpitrefuelinghublocations.
“Thesizeandscopeofthiscapstonewereunprecedented,” saidBurdick.“We provedwecandeliverairpowerinmassonshortnotice, withascaledbackforce footprintandinaustereconditions. Notonlydidwedemonstratethatwehave a growingsignificantcapabilitywhenitcomestoACE,butwealsoopenedthedoor tolearningabout manyareasweneedtocapitalizeontocontinueourtrendofimprovement.”
MaintenanceAirmenassignedtothe6thMaintenanceGroupworkedalongside aircrew memberstoproviderapidmaintenance support aswellasperformon-theground hotpitrefuelingoperationstooptimizethetimeintheairfortherefueling tankers.
Bothairrefuelingsquadronsweretaskedwithorganizingaircrewmembersin real-timetofulfilltherequirementsoftheexercise’sairtaskingorder Minimum personnel,resourcesandmission-typeorderswereprovidedtoeachunittomimic thepressures ofacombat environment.
“Theexercise wasdesigned toencompass allthetrainingwehaveaccomplished overthepastyearandtostresstheforceandaircraftinamannertofosterin-

Instead, Bezos wouldhandouta“pre-read”documentwithinformation pertinenttothemeeting. Attendeeswouldsilentlyreadthisprintout, discussthetopicsthencreatesolutionsandactionplans Thisprocessresultedintimesavedforhisemployeesandmademeetingsmorevaluable bygivingotherstheabilitytothinkforthemselves.

Nowinits fourth year, theannualevent has grown intoa collaborativeeffortthatbringstogetherpartners andinnovationleadersfromacrossthe Departmentof Defense. Duringthattime, AFIMSC Ventures–thecenter’sinnovationoffice chargedwithhelpingtheAir Force findinnovativesolutionstotough,urgent, realworld, installationandmissionsupport challenges–hasalso turnedaninitial$1millionbudgetinto$85millionby leveraging Air Forceandventurecapitalfundingprograms.
“We’rehelpingAirmenmovetheneedleforwardon projectsthathavethepotentialtoimproveprocessesand systemsacrosstheAir Force,” saidPitman Kennedy, an innovationprojectmanagerwithAFIMSC Ventures.
Inadditiontofunding, winnersandfinalistswere matchedwithinnovationteams from AFIMSCprimary subordinateunits–Air ForceCivilEngineerCenter, Air ForceSecurity ForcesCenter, Air ForceServicesCenter andAir ForceInstallationContractingCenter–forprojectdevelopment, testingandexecution.
Thisyear, supportandguidance wasn’t justreserved forfinalistsandwinners, saidDustinDickens, innovationproject manager with theAFIMSC Ventures.
“Eventhoughwehadeightfinaliststoday, weconsidered72totalideasthisyearandourgoalistoprovide resources(foreveryidea),” hesaid.“We’realigningsubmissionswiththeNationalSecurityInnovationNetwork andthey’realigningtheideaswithlocaluniversitiesand collegesorotherexecutionpathwaystohelpthemmove forward.”
ThroughtheInnovationRodeoandotherevents, along withanetworkoffunctionalinnovationteamsworking toidentify, nurture, developandfieldideas, AFIMSCis attheforefrontofinstallationandmission supportinnovation, Dickensadded.
“Innovationculture. Everybodysaysit,butwe wantto accomplishit. We wantto changethemindset. We want toshowthatanybodycanhaveanideaworthpursuing,” hesaid.“We’re providingfunding, we’reprovidingresources, we’reprovidingexecutionpathways, andwe’re aligningprojectmanagementteamstosupportthese ideasandconceptsandmovethemforward. We’re showingthatthat nomatter howsmallyourideais, (AFIMSC)willwork to executeit.”

He wastold,withthiskindoffracture, they couldputitbacktogether, butwiththenervedamagehis legwouldnotbenormalagain. Notgivingup, heendured twoyearsof multiplesurgeries.
“IgrewupanathleteandIhadbeenaGreenBeretfor a whilesoIthoughtIwouldtoughitoutandgetbetter. So, I enduredseveralsurgeriesattheUniversityofNorthCarolina,” Irelandsaid.“TheysetmeupafulllegIdeobraceand I wasabletodeploybacktoAfghanistanwiththeteamas asupportperson.I washappyIgottodeploywithmyteam onemoretime. Made itthereandbackwithmyteam.That wassomethingIneeded formymentalwell-being.”
Unfortunately, duringthatdeploymenthislegjuststartedbowing badlysohewent downtoSanAntoniotothe CenteroftheIntrepidwherehetalkedtothesurgeonthere andhedecidedtooptforamputation.
“It wasalmosttwoyearstothedayfrominjurytoamputation,” Irelandsaid.
Whilerecovering, Ireland was watchingtheInvictus Games, theinternationalmilitaryadaptivesportsprogram, ontelevision andimmediatelybecameinterestedincompeting.
“Isawthe2016InvictusGamesonTVandIthought thatmightbe somethingIwould wanttobeinvolvedwith. So, theUSSOCOM WarriorCareProgramintroducedme totheDoD WarriorGamesandallowedmetotrydifferent sports,” Irelandsaid.
Alwaysanathlete, thegamesreinvigoratedIrelandand gavehima newpurpose.
“WhiletheSOCOM WarriorCareProgramdidanamazingjobintroducingmetoAdaptiveSports, the Warrior Gamesprovidedthatcompetitivegoaltostriveforevery dayattraining Itislikea culminationexercisewhereyou canhighlighttheblood,sweat, andtearsyouputinthrough therehabilitation process,” Ireland said.
IrelandisalsogratefulforhowtheUSSOCOM Warrior CareProgramhelpedhim,andhisfamilynavigatehisrecovery.
“TheUSSOCOM WarriorCareProgramhasbeenwith methrougheverystepofthe wayofmyinjuryrecovery,” he said. “Itishardtoputintowordshowmuchtheyhavesupportedme, myfamily, andmycareer. ofadaptivesportsand thebenefits that comealongwiththem.”
