FALLS CHURCH, Va Thecurrentoutbreakofmonkeypoxcontinuestospread,withmore than6,600activecasesintheUnitedStates mostlyoccurringamong gay and bisexualmen.

TheWhiteHousedeclaredonAugust4thatmonkeypoxisanationalpublichealthemergency, andAir Forceproviders at military treatmentfacilitiesarereadytoprovideguidanceonthemonkeypox vaccine. If notimmediately available, shipmentoftheapprovedmonkeypoxvaccinecanbe availablewithin 24to 48hours.

“AccordingtotheCentersforDiseaseControlandPreventionguidanceonvaccines, evenifthevaccineisgivenbetweenfourand14days ofbeingexposed, thevaccinecanstillbehelpfulinreducingthesymptomsofmonkeypox,” saidLt Col SoniaMolchan,preventivemedicine chief, Air ForceMedical ReadinessAgency.

Ifan AirmanorGuardianfallswithintheCDCguidelinesforrecommendedvaccination, themilitarytreatmentfacilitywillcoordinate that.

The CDC providestieredriskassessmentsforexposure. High-risk categoryincludesindividualswhohavebeencontactedbytheirlocal publichealthdepartments, havehad closeorintimatecontactinthe

past14dayswithan individual withmonkeypox,orhavehadmultiple sexualpartnersinthepast 14 daysinan areawithknown monkeypox.

Individualsathighriskalsoincludepeoplewhomayliveinthe samehouseholdwithaninfectedperson,sharethesamespaceor touch thesame objects, andhaving close, intimate contact.

Moderaterisksituationsincludeexposuretorespiratorydropletsor attendinganindooreventwithaninfectedpersonwhereprolonged, closecontactcouldoccur.

“Themost importantthingsAirmenandGuardiansneed toknow arewhatmonkeypoxis, whataretheirrisks, andwhattodoifthey areexposed,” saidLt. Col.DavidSayers, Chief, PreventiveMedicine, Air ForceMedicalReadinessAgency.

“Monkeypoxisnotasexuallytransmittedinfection. We knowthat monkeypoxcan alsospread by handlingobjects, like clothingorlinens, usedbysomeonewithaknowninfection,” saidRoman.“Weurgeour memberstoreachouttotheirproviderstogeta clearassessmentof potentialriskanddiscusshowtopreventmonkeypoxinfectionorget vaccinated.”

The WorldHealthOrganizationcautionedon July25againstcomplacencyintherapidlyescalatingmonkeypoxoutbreak,sayingthere isnoguarantee itwillcontinuetospreadwithinspecific communities. However, theLITisworkingtoensurememberswhoarehigher-risk

have access to thenecessary information, supportandguidance.

“Thebest waytokeepeachothersafeistokeepeachotherinformed,” saidRoman.“TheLIThasthisimpressivecommunication networkwherememberscanraiseissuesandconcerns. We have a medical-focusedlineofeffortwithintheLIT, sowehavememberswho arefocusedonmedicalissuesandbarriersimpactingtheLGBTQ+ community.”

“Thisisstillanongoingsituationthatcould changeatanytimeand recommendationsmay change,” saidSayers “Asmedics, wewilldoour besttokeepourmembersinformedanddoallwecantokeepthemsafe.”
