TheWhiteHousedeclaredonAugust4thatmonkeypoxisanationalpublichealthemergency, andAir Forceproviders at military treatmentfacilitiesarereadytoprovideguidanceonthemonkeypox vaccine. If notimmediately available, shipmentoftheapprovedmonkeypoxvaccinecanbe availablewithin 24to 48hours.
“AccordingtotheCentersforDiseaseControlandPreventionguidanceonvaccines, evenifthevaccineisgivenbetweenfourand14days ofbeingexposed, thevaccinecanstillbehelpfulinreducingthesymptomsofmonkeypox,” saidLt Col SoniaMolchan,preventivemedicine chief, Air ForceMedical ReadinessAgency.

“Monkeypoxisnotasexuallytransmittedinfection. We knowthat monkeypoxcan alsospread by handlingobjects, like clothingorlinens, usedbysomeonewithaknowninfection,” saidRoman.“Weurgeour memberstoreachouttotheirproviderstogeta clearassessmentof potentialriskanddiscusshowtopreventmonkeypoxinfectionorget vaccinated.”
The WorldHealthOrganizationcautionedon July25againstcomplacencyintherapidlyescalatingmonkeypoxoutbreak,sayingthere isnoguarantee itwillcontinuetospreadwithinspecific communities. However, theLITisworkingtoensurememberswhoarehigher-risk
have access to thenecessary information, supportandguidance.
“Thebest waytokeepeachothersafeistokeepeachotherinformed,” saidRoman.“TheLIThasthisimpressivecommunication networkwherememberscanraiseissuesandconcerns. We have a medical-focusedlineofeffortwithintheLIT, sowehavememberswho arefocusedonmedicalissuesandbarriersimpactingtheLGBTQ+ community.”
