NEWS/FEATURES Monkeypox declared public health emergency What Airmen, Guardians need to know

by Air Force Surgeon General Public Affairs FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AFNS)—The World Health Organization declared monkeypox a public health emergency, July 23. With more than 4,000 cases in the U.S., Airmen and Guardians should know the risks and how to stay safe.

Monkeypox is primarily spread from person-to-person through prolonged close contact with an infectious rash, scabs or body fluids, as well as through respiratory droplets or oral fluids. Additionally, spread can also occur through the handling of objects such as bedding or clothing belonging to a person with a known infection.

Vaccine and treatment The Food and Drug Administration has approved a vaccine for monkeypox, however it is in limited supply in the U.S. The Department of Defense is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to ensure all service members, stateside and overseas, have a vaccine within 24 to 48 hours.

Members who have questions, concerns or want to know their vaccine eligibility should contact their military treatment facility. Patients who receive care outside of the MTF should contact their local provider.

The current guidance on who can get vaccinated prioritizes those

who are a known contact identified through public health contact tracing, as well as those who have had sexual contact in the last 14 days with an individual who was infected or had multiple sexual partners in the past 14 days in an area with known monkeypox cases. Additionally, those whose jobs may expose them to monkeypox, such as laboratory workers who handle monkeypox specimens, are advised to receive the vaccine.

“If you believe you fall into one of these categories, then you need to quickly reach out to your provider to get assessed and confirm the need for the vaccine,” said Lt. Col. David Sayers, Preventive Medicine chief, Air Force Medical Readiness Agency.

Airmen and Guardians should seek medical care immediately if they believe they have come in close contact with someone with a known infection or have a suspected infection themselves.

“Please do not wait to seek medical attention if you believe you are infected or a close contact,” Sayers said. “While the current outbreak has mostly been seen among men, anyone can be at risk of getting infected. Children, pregnant women and people who are immunocompromised are most at risk of severe complications should they become infected.”

U.S. Central Command military leaders visit 5th Fleet in Bahrain

MANAMA, Bahrain—Leaders from U.S. Central Command’s Army, Air Force, Marine Corps and Special Operations components visited U.S. 5th Fleet headquarters in Manama, Bahrain, July 22.

Accompanied by Navy leaders, more than 50 personnel toured U.S. ships moored at Naval Support Activity Bahrain and learned about U.S. 5th Fleet’s integration of unmanned systems and artificial intelligence.

Fitness program keeping civilians in fighting shape

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio (AFNS)— “Excellence in all we do” is an Air Force core value. Excellence can encompass a myriad of things including work ethic, training and education, and even maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It’s every Airman’s duty to be the best they can be.

Active-duty Airmen have long had fitness and weight standards to keep them combat ready. Though civilians don’t have the same requirements, sustaining a robust civilian force is critical since the most important Air Force asset is its people.

“Prioritizing the health of our civilian force is key to the success of the Air Force mission,” said Lt. Gen. Carl E. Schaefer, Air Force Materiel Command deputy commander.

That’s why the Civilian Health Promotion Services program, was established in 2006. Because of its huge civilian workforce, the program originated in AFMC, which is now the program administrator CONUSwide.

The CHPS program began with on-site teams conducting health screenings and educational workshops. They work closely with other

base entities including the fitness center, health promotions, Employee Assistance Program, and Military OneSource to reduce redundancy and best use resources. CHPS also serves as a communications platform, pointing users to support agencies when they are in need.

“The multi-faceted program has been so successful in AFMC that leadership has endorsed its expansion across CONUS,” said Katie Doyle, CHPS program manager.

The first pilot outside of AFMC was with Air Mobility Command in 2018, with onsite teams located at 13 installations. The most recent evolution, this past February, added 16 more on-site offices which are now operational.

The growth allows for virtual health and wellness benefits for installations with smaller populations of civilian employees, as well as periodic visits from a CHPS travel team to provide in-person services.

In between visits, some of the most popular “big buzz” topic courses, such as stress management and nutrition, have been recorded and are available on the CHPS wellness portal.

The portal, which also has a convenient mobile application, is a great asset for anyone who needs 24-hour advice. Users can take a health risk assessment and, since the app is location-based, can key in on a

Col. Adam D. Bingham took command of the 6th ARW from Col. Benjamin R. Jonsson during a ceremony officiated by 18th Air Force Commander Maj. Gen. Kenneth T. Bibb Jr. Addressing the Airmen in his new command for the first time, Bingham affirmed his dedication to their service to the nation.

“I am honored to be your commander,” said Bingham.

“I promise we will charge every storm together. MacDill has a history of excellence and I expect the winning to continue.”

In his previous assignment, Bingham commanded the operations group of the largest pilot training base in the world at Laughlin AFB, Texas, where he was responsible for overseeing the responsible direct training for U.S. Air Force and allied pilots.

During the ceremony, Bibb expressed his confidence in Bingham’s ability to lead the wing’s global reach mission.

“You’re the right leader, at the right place, at the right time,” said Bibb. “With your proven skill and ability, I have every confidence your Airmen will reach new heights.”

As 6th ARW commander, Bingham is responsible for the wing’s worldwide combat air refueling mission and provides installation support to Headquarters U.S. Central Command, Headquarters U.S. Special Operations Command and 31 other joint mission partners.

Additionally, he is responsible for the security and wellbeing of the base’s 16,900 employees and their families, along with $2.8 billion in base property and capital assets.

Bingham said he is excited to serve with members of the 6th ARW to overcome any challenges the future might present.

“Team Bing is thrilled to be here today and every day here at MacDill, we’ll continue to serve with and build winners on the championship peninsula,” he said.

When the visit concluded, some of the guests departed Bahrain on P-8A Poseidon aircraft from Patrol Squadron (VP) 46 for in-flight briefs on the maritime patrol and reconnaissance mission.

The U.S. 5th Fleet operating area includes 21 countries, the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Red Sea, parts of the Indian Ocean and three critical choke points at the Strait of Hormuz, Bab al-Mandeb and Suez Canal.

more than 40 nutrients needed to thrive and there is no one food or food group that can meet those needs.

Nutrients work synergistically, so over-consuming one can affect how well our body uses others. We can also get so focused on one goal, i.e., building muscle that we forget all the other important processes that are continually occurring.

Balance requires eating the proper amount to meet activity and performance goals. Many people eat more than they need, but those who are highly active, exercising 60-minutes or more per day, often have a hard time eating enough to cover their basic physiologic needs. When you’re well-fueled, you should feel satisfied and energized, not hungry and grumpy.

Food quality matters as well—stick close to the farm. Highly processed foods are often short of important nutrients or have added ingredients that affect the homeostasis between all our essential systems.

Take a whole food approach and eat foods that have naturally occurring nutrients to assure you get the high-quality fuel your body deserves.

Lastly, when you eat matters. Not everyone needs to eat six times a day but going too long without eating can affect homeostasis, so eating at least three times a day is an important start.

Timing is also important to get the most out of an exercise session.

Eating before and right after a hard or long exercise session will assure you have a high-quality exercise session, replace used-up fuel and begin the repair, recovery, and synthesis of new muscle tissue.

The portal was upgraded the fall before the pandemic hit — just in time to provide the virtual help Airmen needed most. Some recent campaigns have included avoiding burnout, combating loneliness, weight loss, and fostering healthy relationships. The app also links to Apple Watch, Fitbit and other tracking wearables so that data can be added to the fitness mix.

“Our wellness web portal is a great asset,” Doyle said. “Folks can use tracking tools and participate in activities to help them facilitate a lifestyle behavior change.”

The CHPS program is predominately a civilian resource, but active-

duty members can also use it. The team tries to identify at least one person in each unit to direct communications for further dissemination. Portal users get targeted messages on topics of interest.

“CHPS has proven to be a valuable asset for AFMC personnel and is now reaching civilian Airmen and Guardians across CONUS,” Schaefer said. “This physical health resource promotes a culture of health and shows a commitment to our workforce. It provides meaningful impact in their lives, both in and out of the workplace.”

care to treat the pain, rash, fever and body aches, especially for young, healthy individuals. Currently, there are no specific medications licensed to treat monkeypox.

Symptoms The most prominent monkeypox symptom is a rash that classically starts on the face and distributes to the extremities. In the current outbreak, the rash has been found to be distributed mostly to the genital area in some people. Symptoms also include fever, body aches, swollen lymph nodes and fatigue.

The time from infection to the presentation of symptoms is usually seven to 14 days but may range from five to 21 days total.

“The rash goes through stages where it shows up as a pimple and evolves into a pustule. That pustule then opens up and scabs over before healing,” Sayers said.
