






FALLSCHURCH, Va. (AFNS)—The WorldHealthOrganization declaredmonkeypoxapublichealthemergency, July23. Withmore than4,000casesinthe U.S., AirmenandGuardiansshouldknowthe risksandhowtostaysafe.
Monkeypoxisprimarilyspreadfromperson-to-personthroughprolonged closecontactwithaninfectiousrash, scabsorbodyfluids, as wellasthroughrespiratorydropletsororalfluids Additionally, spread canalsooccurthroughthehandlingofobjectssuchasbeddingor clothingbelongingtoapersonwithaknowninfection.
The FoodandDrugAdministrationhasapprovedavaccineformonkeypox,howeveritisinlimitedsupplyinthe U.S. TheDepartmentof DefenseisworkingwiththeCentersforDiseaseControlandPreventiontoensureallservicemembers, statesideandoverseas, haveavaccinewithin24 to48hours.
Memberswhohavequestions, concernsor wanttoknowtheirvaccineeligibilityshouldcontacttheirmilitarytreatmentfacility.Patients whoreceivecareoutsideoftheMTFshould contacttheirlocalprovider.
Thecurrentguidanceonwhocangetvaccinatedprioritizesthose
whoareaknowncontactidentifiedthroughpublichealthcontacttracing, aswellasthosewhohavehadsexualcontactinthelast14days withanindividualwho wasinfectedorhadmultiplesexualpartnersin thepast14daysinanareawithknownmonkeypoxcases Additionally, thosewhosejobsmayexposethemtomonkeypox,suchaslaboratory workerswhohandlemonkeypoxspecimens, areadvisedtoreceivethe vaccine.
“Ifyoubelieveyoufallintooneofthesecategories, thenyouneedto quicklyreachouttoyourprovidertogetassessedandconfirmtheneed forthevaccine,” saidLt.Col.DavidSayers, PreventiveMedicine chief, Air Force MedicalReadinessAgency.
AirmenandGuardiansshouldseekmedicalcareimmediatelyifthey believetheyhavecomein closecontactwithsomeonewithaknowninfectionorhaveasuspectedinfectionthemselves.
“Pleasedonot waittoseekmedicalattentionifyoubelieveyouare infectedora closecontact,” Sayers said. “Whilethecurrentoutbreak hasmostlybeenseenamongmen,anyonecanbeatriskofgetting infected. Children,pregnantwomenandpeoplewhoareimmunocompromisedaremostatriskofseverecomplicationsshould theybecome infected.”
Isolationisrecommendedforthedurationoftheillnessifanindividualisconfirmedtohavemonkeypox.Treatmentisprimarilysupportive

TheCHPSprogrambeganwithon-siteteamsconductinghealth screeningsandeducationalworkshops. Theywork closelywithother
baseentitiesincludingthefitnesscenter, healthpromotions, Employee AssistanceProgram,andMilitaryOneSourcetoreduceredundancy andbestuseresources CHPSalsoservesasacommunicationsplatform,pointinguserstosupportagencieswhentheyareinneed.
“Themulti-facetedprogramhasbeensosuccessfulinAFMCthat leadershiphasendorseditsexpansion acrossCONUS,” saidKatie Doyle, CHPS programmanager.
ThefirstpilotoutsideofAFMC waswithAirMobilityCommandin 2018,withonsiteteamslocatedat13installations Themostrecent evolution,thispast February, added16moreon-siteofficeswhichare nowoperational.
Thegrowthallowsforvirtualhealthandwellnessbenefitsforinstallationswithsmallerpopulationsofcivilianemployees, aswellas periodicvisitsfromaCHPStravelteam to providein-personservices.
Inbetweenvisits, someofthemostpopular“bigbuzz” topiccourses, suchasstressmanagementandnutrition,havebeenrecordedandare available on theCHPS wellness portal.
