(AFNS)—AnnouncedattheSeptember2022Air andSpace ForcesAssociation’sAir, SpaceandCyberConference, theAir ForceEnlistedSwapAssignmentProgramgoeslive June1forsenior mastersergeantsandbelowwithacurrentassignment.Thisnewpolicy providesAirmenwithmorecontrolandnewflexibilitiesintheirassignmentprocess.
TheAir ForceEnlistedAssignment WorkingGroup, which was chargedwithholisticallyreviewingtheenlistedassignmentprogram, recommendedtheprogram.ThisprogramappliesonlytoAirmen,asthe Space Forcecontinuestoexploreflexibleandtailoredassignmentoptions forGuardians.
ThroughtheMyVectordiscussionforum,Airmenwillbeabletopost theirassignmentsandleveragediscussionstodetermineinterestin swappingassignments Currently, Airmenwillbeabletoapplythrough theMyApplicationlinkonMyVector.
“TheprogramapplicationonMyVectorisn’tperfect,butitwillevolve throughouttheyear,” saidAlex Wagner, assistantsecretaryoftheAir ForceforManpowerandReserveAffairs. “WeunderstandthefrustrationswithourITinfrastructure, whichiswhyit’simportantforyouto

The509thWPSpartneredwith Fa irchildAir Fo rceBase’sinnovationcelltocreatethecranewithagoalofexpandingthe KC-135Stratotanker’sabilitytoloadandunloadvarioustypes ofcargo.
“ThegoalistoretrofitthefleetofKC-135swiththiscapability toallowthemtooperateinmoreplaceswithasmallerfootprint,” said Te ch Sgt.NicholasSowde r, 509thWPSAdvancedInstructor Trainingcadreandinflightrefuelingspecialist.“TheKC-135can onlyloadandunloadcargowiththesupportofaK-loaderor a forklift. Wi ththiscranewewillbeabletotakecargotolocation s thatwouldnotbeabletogiveussupport.”
UtilizingthisinnovationcanalsoimprovetheKC-135sability tosupportitsalreadyrobustcoreairrefuelingandaeromedica l evacuationmissioncapabilities.
“Withthe[PAT R]craneoperatingontheKC-135,itwil l strengthenAirMobilityCommand’stoolbeltandallowafaster large r fleetoftankerstomovecargoandequipment tom orelocationsintheworld,” Sowdersaid.“Thecranewillalsoallowfor moreefficientaeromedicalevacuationmissionsbyaddingthe ability to loadpatientsonboardtheaircraft usi ngalitter.”
Initialtestingforthecranetookplaceat Fa irchildAFBin April,andincludedthecraneliftingmultiplelitters, a250-pound Ve rsatileIntegrating Pa rtnerequipmentRefueling(VIPER)refuelingkit,and300poundsofaircraftequipmenttoincludeatow bar.
“Thecraneiscurrentlyastageoneprototypewithacapability ofloadingnearly2,000poundsandconfiguredtobeeasilyportableand ch angeabletomeettheneedsofthemission,” Sowder said. “Theuseofth ecraneontheKC-135couldplayacritical rolepartinAgileCombatEmploymentandtheabilityforaKC135crewtooperatewithminimumsupportanywherearoundthe globe.”

Honorguard, like most careers intheAir Force, requiresextremeattentiontodetail.AccordingtoMontero, priortoeveryceremonytheteamthoroughly cleansand polishesthebuglesandholsters, in additiontoafulluniforminspection.
“Westressabouteverydetailbecausethefamilieswe’re performingfordeserveit,” saidMontero. “It’simportant forallofourAirmentounderstandthatwhicheverceremonywe’reperformingmaybethefirstorlastimpression afamilymember will havewiththeAir Forceasa whole.”
Thehonorguardteamworkswithfamiliestoschedule militaryhonorsanytimeand anyday. Theirdedicationto honoringtheirfellowAirmenmotivatesthemtoperform whenmostwon’t.
“Weareheretosupportthefamilyalways,” said U.S. Air ForceStaffSgt. JosephBaldwin,6thARWhonorguard non-commissioned officerin charge. “When thefamily wantsa service, we provide it Nodays off.”
AccordingtoMontero, amongtheceremonieshonor guardperform,themilitaryfuneralisthemostimportant. Themilitaryfuneralprovidesthemwiththeopportunity tohonorandcommemoratefellowAirmenwhofaithfully servedtheircountry.
“IfeeladeepconnectionwitheveryceremonyIconduct,” saidMontero. “WhetheritbeayoungAirmanwhose journey wascuttooshortoranoldveteranwhoselong historyiscomingtoanend, weservethemwithdignity andrespect.”

Volunteermentorsinmanycases willbeprovidingpresentations abouttheirjobsandsliceofthemilitarytocadetsincoordinationwith theunits’officerandseniorenlistedaerospacescienceinstructors, who areretiredservicemembers TheUTWstaffwillalsoreviewandapprovethepresentations, whichcanbein-personor virtual.
“Weallhavesomeonethatwelookupto, regardlessoftheposition andrank.Myrolemodelhasallowedmetoincreasemydesireforsuccessandstayaccountabletothethingsthatmakemebeabetterperson/memberoftheprofessionofarms,” saidChiefMasterSgt. GildaM. Alexander, theHolmCentercommand chief.
