B-21 Raider continues flight test, production

Following its formal unveiling, Dec. 2, 2022, the B-21 Raider began flight testing here where it continues to make progress toward becoming the backbone of the U.S. Air Force bomber fleet.

On May 8, 2024, during testimony at the Senate Armed Services committee, Andrew Hunter, Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics, highlighted B-21 flight testing is on track to meet timelines and deliver to the warfighter.

“We are in the flight test program, the flight test program is proceeding well,” said Hunter in response to a question about the B-21 program. “It is doing what flight test programs are designed to do, which is helping us learn about the unique characteristics of this platform, but in a very, very effective way.”

Hunter explained this is the first aircraft that is more digital than not, which contributes to the program meeting requirements.

Hurlburt Field honors Senior Airman Roger Fortson during memorial service

Ryan Conroy 1st Special Operations Wing HURLBURT FIELD, FLORIDA–In a poignant display of unity and reverence, hundreds of Airmen, friends, teammates and family members packed the Freedom Hanger to pay their respects to Senior Airman Roger Fortson during a memorial service here, May 20, 2024.

Several teammates shared messages and memories as the essence of Fortson’s life unfolded before those who gathered. Stories of dedication, selflessness, service and enthusiasm underscored his impact on the collective gunship and Team Hurlburt community.

“Senior Airman Fortson raised his right hand and swore to defend this country,” said Col. Patrick Dierig, commander of the 1st Special Operations Wing. “He answered the call

with honor, professionalism and confidence. He was a great Air Commando and a great aviator, but he was also a great person.

“If you want to be a great Airman, be a great person first and Senior Airman Fortson did just that,” he continued.

Fortson was killed at the age of 23 in a shooting incident involving an Okaloosa County Sheriff ’s Department deputy on May 3, 2024, at his off-base apartment. The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Adaptability in action: 55th ‘Shooters’ support NORAD with mission support innovations

by Senior Airman Steven Cardo 20th Fighter Wing SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C.—In 2023, tasked with supporting North American Aerospace Defense Command’s (NORAD) Operation Noble Eagle, the 20th Fighter Wing’s 55th Fighter and Fighter Generation Squadron “Shooters” overcame a formidable challenge: relocating from Nellis AFB, Nevada to Hill AFB, Utah with less than 24-hours’ notice to ensure uninterrupted support operations. The mission tasking highlighted the squadron’s resilience and logistical capabilities, setting the stage for a mission marked by adaptability, dedication, and commitment to homeland security.

Early in the tasking the team was faced with Hurricane Hilary, which was set to impact weather and infrastructure across Southern

California. In response to the approaching hurricane and the risk it posed to the F-16s during their time deployed to Nellis, aircraft and personnel were required to quickly relocate to Hill to ensure continued support. Despite the abrupt move, the team successfully overcame logistical challenges and maintained aircraft generation and readiness while efficiently reconfiguring aircraft for both training and mission purposes, bolstering homeland defense.

“This was a perfect example of what a group of high-performing individuals is capable of accomplishing, logistically and operationally, when the chips are down and we need to take action,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Taylor Hiester, then 55th FS project officer. “It was a huge muscle movement to go from Shaw to Nellis to support mission operations. Then, we were required to pick up our See NORAD, Page 7

son gave and how he is remembered in the military and flying community,” said Lt. Col. Kaelin Thistlewood, commander of the 4th Special Operations Squadron, speaking directly to the family. “His legacy of bravery, his fellowship and friendship and his service will forever be cherished and may bring some measure of peace knowing the impact that he had on all of us here today.”

During the service, Thistlewood posthumously awarded Fortson the Air and Space Commendation Medal for meritorious service while assigned as a special missions aviator with the 4th SOS and presented the medal to Fortson’s mother and father.

“Roger can be summarized by the word exceptional,” said Capt. Malcom Lee, an AC-130J Ghostrider Gunship evaluator pilot with the 4th SOS. “Everything about him was exceptional. He was an exceptional athlete, especially gifted in baseball. He was an exceptional student ranking in the top of his peers on his [Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery] and aircrew test, and he was an exceptional special missions aviator, achieving the highest evaluation on his first AC-130 check ride.

“Roger is exceptional … because even in this tragic event that divided a nation he has managed to bond together our community, our Air Force, and people all around the globe through love,” continued Lee. Following the service, Fortson’s visiting family members toured an AC-130J to get a sense of what his job entailed. According to Senior

“The evaluator then gave him back a very confused look,” said Courtney. “Roger without missing a beat said, ‘You’re going to need this because I’m going to be on fire answering these questions today.”’

operation and move to Hill with less than [24-hours’] notice as we anticipated some severe weather. So, we had to move aircraft, personnel and equipment to Hill with almost no notice, meaning Airmen needed to find lodging and figure out transportation for parts and equipment. Within two hours of landing at Hill, we were able to establish an [operations center] complete with satellite communications to receive the rest of the fleet and continue to support the mission we were there for.”

Deploying equipment and personnel from one installation to another can pose logistical challenges, prompting the 20th FW to establish a dedicated mission support team (MST) responsible for facilitating the movement and ensuring the logistical readiness of deploying units during the tasking. The MST comprised personnel from various support units and provided F-16-specific emergency response, airfield management, logistics, command and control, and more to ensure mission success. The 55th’s tasking to support NORAD marked the 20th FW’s first employment of an MST for such a mission, where the team was able to showcase its ability to operate effectively and achieve mission success despite a short-notice relocation to Hill in response to weather.

“Our role was to successfully deploy and redeploy the team, while also encompassing other LRS (logistics readiness squadron) functions such as fuel and supply support...,” said 1st Lt. Vanessa Perez, 20th Mission Support Group executive officer, and MST lead for the forward deployment to Nellis. “From my perspective, it was crucial to the mission to have the kind of logistics support that my team and I could provide. We did everything from coordinating airlift, to driving to Arizona to pick up a mission capable part for a jet.”

The MST was tailored to fulfill the needs of the 55th and the different locations they were tasked to during their mission, working closely with operations and maintenance project officers to plan, prepare for and execute the deployment and redeployment of personnel and assets at different host installations.

Later in the tasking, when the 55th integrated with the Puerto Rico Air National Guard (PRANG) while operating out of Muñiz Air National Guard Base, Puerto Rico, the MST required a more robust presence to supplement the host installation’s personnel and support capabilities.

“The MST played a vital role in supporting both operations and maintenance in executing the mission during the tasking with the PRANG,” said Capt. Shanna Thomas, 20th Civil Engineer Squadron operations flight deputy and MST lead for the forward deployment to Puerto Rico. “We split our capabilities within the MST up into different shifts to ensure full coverage of mission sustainment, protection, and airfield readiness during [the mission]. PRANG put some of

their personnel on active orders for the duration of the tasking to help augment our team, providing additional support so we didn’t have to deploy as many personnel from Shaw.

We trained the augmented PRANG Airmen on F-16-specific support since they don’t have fighters at their base.”

Maintenance personnel supported both the pilot training and constant ready-state of the squadron by developing methods to swiftly reconfigure aircraft between operational and training status. This often required maintainers to operate during irregular hours to best support aircraft between mission and training sorties.

The fighter squadron had to be flexible enough to reconfigure their aircraft to alternate between supporting training as well as the tasking’s mission requirements, said Senior Master Sgt. Eric Hilliard, 55th FS sortie support flight chief.

The 55th FS, FGS and support personnel demonstrated dedication and adaptability while navigating the demanding requirements of pilot training alongside ongoing mission commitments. Their dedication to the mission in the face of uncertain schedules and challenging conditions highlighted the importance of their role in maintaining the readiness and operational effectiveness of the 20th FW. 6th SFS makes a breakthrough in breaching technology story and photos by Senior Airman Michael Killian 6th Air Refueling Wing

T

he 6th Security Forces Squadron is set to revolutionize their breaching capabilities with the introduction of new battery hydraulic breaching kits, designed to penetrate Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility doors previously considered impenetrable. This innovation, resulting from a collaboration with AFWERX and a breaching equipment company, marks a significant advancement in security and emergency response operations.

In 2021, the 6th SFS embarked on two small business innovation research projects. Their objective was to enhance the battery hydraulic breaching kit, making it quieter, lighter, more powerful, and more efficient. The result, a revamped kit, allows police officers nationwide to utilize it with minimal training.

By 2023, the project team shifted their focus to a more challenging problem: breaching hardened facilities and SCIF doors. Conventional tools like battering rams could hardly put dents into these steel behemoths during high-risk incidents, such as active shooter situations.

The team conducted real-world tests, breaching actual SCIF doors at a cost of $25,000 per door. After successfully breaching three doors, they developed the first-ever SCIF breaching tool, hinge puller, and SCIF training door.

The SCIF training door allows military, law enforcement, and first responders worldwide to conduct real-time, repetitive training at a fraction of the cost, reducing expenses to less than one dollar per use.

“This gives our breachers the ability to get through hundreds of doors with little to no effort,” said U.S. Air Force Tech Sgt. William Au, the 6th SFS emergency services team non-commissioned officer in charge of confinement and police services. “What the hydraulic kit offers is the ability to get into hardened facilities where mechanical tools can’t.”

The development of these tools culminated in a breaching symposium, where 20 SWAT teams from federal, local, and state agencies participated and validated the new equipment. This event showcased the capabilities and effectiveness of the breaching kits, highlighting their potential to enhance security operations across various agencies.

“My goal is to get this breaching kit into every SFS squadron and police department nationwide,” said Jason Atkinson, the 6th SFS emergency services team chief of flight operations. “If these tools help save one police officer’s life, then the effort we put into developing them will have all been worth it.”

Since the project’s completion, 50 police departments have already started to follow MacDill’s example. The battery-powered hydraulic power unit, SCIF door breach tool, and hinge puller tool have all undergone rigorous testing, proving their effectiveness and reliability in high-stakes scenarios.

With these advancements, the 6th Security Forces Squadron is not only enhancing their own capabilities but also setting a new standard for security operations across the nation. The introduction of these innovative tools underscores the commitment to ensuring the safety and effectiveness of first responders in the most critical situations.

penetrating strike stealth bomber that will incrementally replace the B-1 and B-2 bombers and will play a major role supporting national security objectives and assuring U.S. allies and partners across the globe.

The B-21 weapon system is manufactured under the Air Force’s contract with Northrop Grumman. It is designed with an open systems architecture, enabling rapid insertion of mature technologies, and allowing the aircraft to remain effective as threats evolve over time.

The aircraft is expected to enter service in the mid-2020s with a production goal of a minimum of 100 aircraft.

The Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office manages the acquisition program, focusing on making test aircraft as production representative as possible. Test aircraft are built on the same manufacturing line and use the same manning and tooling that will be used in the eventual production.

The AFRCO’s strategy includes building test aircraft as production-representative as possible. Rather than a traditional flight prototype approach, B-21 test aircraft are built including mission systems using the same manufacturing processes and tooling for production aircraft.

This approach in development laid the groundwork for production to start more quickly.

When the B-21 enters the service, Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota, will be the first B-21 main operating base and location of the Formal Training Unit.

Whiteman AFB, Missouri, and Dyess AFB, Texas, are the preferred locations for the remaining bases and will receive aircraft as they become available.

they continued to uphold their standards of professionalism and proficiency, the Shooters supported homeland and international defense requirements while preparing technicians and pilots for the future threat environment. During the tasking, the wing also honed its ability to employ MSTs in support of operational requirements.

“Overall, the resiliency of our folks to work 12-hour shifts during the week and weekends, during hours of darkness and daylight was inspiring,” Hilliard said. “They kept a positive attitude the entire time and it was because of their efforts that we were able to ensure our 55th pilots stayed combat ready.”

The Continental U.S. North American Aerospace Defense Command Region has relied on the 20th Fighter Wing for its exceptional airspace surveillance and control capabilities. As a part of a collaborative effort that includes the U.S. Air Force, Royal Canadian Air Force, Air National Guard, U.S. Coast Guard, and Civil Air Patrol, the ‘Shooters’ applied adaptability and logistical innovation to fulfill the tasking.

I want to fly 70-1274…an AWADS bird…and I want Billy Ouber as my Crew Chief. I want it adorned with a Texas tail flash.

I want Mark Fritzsche to sign off on my flight orders and CRM. I want Doug Kruelen to tell me, “don’t suck,” as I board the crew bus.

I want my Co to be BigNo Oviedo…and my Nav to be Marco Martinez. Sign me up for Kevin Johnson as my Eng and please do pamper me with Tommy G and Kevin Letz as my Loadies.

Let’s drop personnel please…the 173rd. Combat loaded. Make it night. In formation…as lead. Count me in as Mission Commander too.

Let’s sweat and reek of the Herk beast.

I want the checklists to be crisp…the warnings on-time. I want the TP at the IP and a soothing AWADS run-in cadence.

Let’s do it old school…no NVGs…600’ A…visual. Mark the DZ with block letter A. Let’s be in-line with 4L drift.

I want to feel and hear the pitter patter of airborne boots shuffling to the doors. I want to anticipate then feel the CG shifting aft as they depart. I want to feel on the yoke the ever so subtle and comforting “pops”

Let’s taxi to park majestically with the inboards shut down and the outboards in low speed. Pop the forward hatch…open ramp & door.

Let’s purposefully make the outboards sing that spiritual biting groan all the way in. .

I want to be greeted by Tater, Binjo, and El Shirto…and so many more.

Let’s debrief with gusto, respect and several frosty beverages.

Let’s aggressively adjourn the debrief to the EGUN Bravo Bar…as a crew. Where we shall frolic and howl in shocking intensity and longevity in rejoice of our gratefulness of the moment at hand.
