WASHINGTON(AFNS)—ThenamesofthreeDepartmentoftheAir Forcedefenderswereamongthe556fallenofficersreadaloudduring the35thAnnualCandlelightvigilMay13aspartofthemanyevents thattakeplaceacrossthecountryduringNational Police Week,May 14-19.
Thethreedefendershonoredduringthevigilwere Tech Sgt. Jason Norton,StaffSgt.BrianMcElroyandSeniorAirman JasonNathan.
“Itisimportanttohonortheirmemoriesandcelebratetheachievementstheymadetothedefenseofournation,” saidBrig Gen.Thomas Sherman,directorofSecurity Forces. “National Police Weekingeneral isatimetoreflectonthosewelost,aswellasatimetocometogetheras lawenforcementprofessionalswithintheSecurity Forces careerfield.”
Atthisyear’svigil,TimothyGerald, deputydirectorofSecurity Forces, attendedthevigiltorepresenttheDepartmentoftheAir Forcedefenderfamily.
“OurDepartmentof theAir Force civilianpolice officershaveworked alongsideuniformeddefenders for morethan adecade. Together, our activeduty, Guard,Reserve, andciviliandefendersconductinglawenforcementmakeusastrongerfightingforce,” saidGerald, whoalso servesastheseniorAir Forcecivilianandfunctionalmanageroverseeingallmattersconcerningtheutilization,developmentandcareerfield managementofthe4,600-personDAFciviliansecurityandpoliceforce.

Seventeenvesselslaunchedintothebayasacollaborativeeffortbetween Tampa’s community, state, localandfederalpartners. Themissionoftheoperation wastostrengthencoordination,responsecapabilitiesandmutualunderstandingbetweentheagencies.
Col. Jason Parker, 6thMissionSupportGroupcommander, emphasizedthe significanceofOperationNeptune’sStorminenhancingregionalsecurity.
“Thisoperationdemonstratedthecollectivestrengthandpreparednessof ourpartnersinsafeguardingourcoastlines,”Pa rkersaid . “OperationNeptune’sStormhighlightstheseamlesscoordinationbetweenmilitary, state, andlocalagenciestoprotectournationalinterestsandensurethesafetyof
ourcommunities.”
Themaritimeexerciseinvolvedseveralmilitaryassets, includingboats skis, helicoptersandpersonnelfromthe U.S. Air Forceand U.S. CoastGuard. However, it wasnotjustthemilitaryinvolvedinthisdisplayofreadiness. lawenforcementagenciesjoinedforcesto ensurethesuccessoftheoperation.

Tann proactivelyreachedouttoherformerhighschool’sJROTCinstructors inDudley, NorthCarolina,aswellasStaffSgt.CharlesCoffin,alocal Air Forcerecruiterwith the 337thRecruitingSquadronbasedinGoldsboro, tocreateandhostatwo-parteventather formerschoolMay12.
Thefirstpartoftheevent, which TanncoordinatedherselfinpartnershipwiththeschoolandAir ForceRecruiting, consistedofanopen questionandanswerperiodthatallowedstudentstheopportunityto ask TannquestionsaboutherexperiencesintheAir Force Tannalso sharedphotosandsquadrongearfromBasicMilitaryTraining. Shealsohighlightedafewofthe awardsshehasearnedwhileonactiveduty.
“Ialsoextendedtheopportunityforthelocalrecruitertocometothe schoolduringtheevent,” Tannsaid. “StaffSgt. Coffincameoutwith swagforthestudents, andsharedhisknowledgeandthoughtsabout whatthefuturecouldholdiforwhentheydecidedtojointhe U.S. Air Force.”

LawenforcementisanimportantaspectofSecurity Force’s largermissionofbasedefense. Defendersprotect Airmen,Guardiansandtheirfamilies; defend resources, equipmentandcapability;andassurethatairandspace missions supportingtheDAFarecarriedoutsuccessfully andsecurely.
Lawenforcementisnotonlyimportantforthesafety andwell-beingofAirmen—itisalsoakeyforce-multiplyingcapability vestedinbasedefense.
AstheAirStaffrecognizeslawenforcementprofessionalsduring Police Week, italsoreflectsonthemajoreffortsunderway tosupportcivilianswithinitslawenforcementcommunity. In2022,theSecurity Forcesenterprise launchedanefforttobuildthelawenforcementspecialty directlywithintheciviliancareerfield.Thisrequiredselectingasubsetofthe43,000 Total ForceSecurity Forces populationtobeuniquelyidentifiedaslawenforcement practitioners.
Buildingonthateffort,theAirStaffexpandedthe Police OfficerTrainingandStandardsAccreditedAcademytoacceptmilitarystudents. ThisenablestheSecurity Forces enterprisetoestablishafoundationofbasedefensetraining, creatingbasedefense-focuseddefenderswithinthebasiccourseswhilelaterselectingAirmenforspecializedlaw enforcementtrainingattheacademy.
TheAir ForceSecurity ForcesCenterfacilitatedfunding toincreasecourse availabilityto500studentsperyear. All graduatesarecredentialedandbadgedfederallawenforcementofficers Finally, tosustainofficerskills, theAFSFC willintroducea40-hourannualrecertificationcourseand additionalinstructionforfieldtrainingofficers, sergeant/ supervisorsanddeputydirectors.

Thestudentsthankedmeformy timeandtold mehow much theyenjoyedthe chance to learn more about theAir Force.”
