Defenders memorialized during police week, DAF expands SF training Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs WASHINGTON (AFNS)—The names of three Department of the Air Force defenders were among the 556 fallen officers read aloud during the 35th Annual Candlelight vigil May 13 as part of the many events that take place across the country during National Police Week, May 14-19.

The three defenders honored during the vigil were Tech. Sgt. Jason Norton, Staff Sgt. Brian McElroy and Senior Airman Jason Nathan.

“It is important to honor their memories and celebrate the achievements they made to the defense of our nation,” said Brig. Gen. Thomas Sherman, director of Security Forces. “National Police Week in general is a time to reflect on those we lost, as well as a time to come together as law enforcement professionals within the Security Forces career field.”

At this year’s vigil, Timothy Gerald, deputy director of Security Forces, attended the vigil to represent the Department of the Air Force defender family.

“Our Department of the Air Force civilian police officers have worked alongside uniformed defenders for more than a decade. Together, our active duty, Guard, Reserve, and civilian defenders conducting law enforcement make us a stronger fighting force,” said Gerald, who also serves as the senior Air Force civilian and functional manager overseeing all matters concerning the utilization, development and career field management of the 4,600-person DAF civilian security and police force.

“Thank you to our Total Force defender family for their dedicated service.”

NEWS/FEATURES CMSAF challenges Airmen to ‘make a difference

by Airman 1st Class Katie McKee 82nd Training Wing Public Affairs SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFNS)— Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass encouraged Airmen to “make our Air Force better” during a visit to SheppardAir Force Base, May 8-9.

“I need you to make a difference in your organization and make a difference in our Air Force,” Bass said. “Be well aware of this time you’re serving and make our Air Force better, especially in a time like this where we have a pacing challenge such as China. It’s going to be you who helps us make sure that we’re going to be the Air Force that our nation needs.”

Bass took the opportunity to address Sheppard AFB’s unique audience – Airmen in training. She urged them to stay focused and maintain their readiness and reiterated the need for continued investment in training and technology.

Air Force, Space Force to offer medals, promotions for recruiting support Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS)—Airmen and Guardians can now receive decorations or promotions through recruiting referrals under the new Airman and Guardian Referral Program.

Two new programs, Stellar Talent Acquisition Recruiting Referral and Stripes for Referrals, aim to incentivize all Airmen and Guardians to inspire the next generation to serve in the Air Force and Space Force.

STARR authorizes enlisted service members up to senior master sergeant and officers up to lieutenant colonel to receive up to two Air and Space Achievement Medals for referring three enlisted accessions applicants who depart for basic military training.

Additionally, any enlisted member, or officer up to colonel, may receive the Air and Space Commendation Medal for referring five enlisted accessions applicants who depart for basic military training.

Stripes for Referrals allows Airman and Guardian recruits to be promoted up to E-2 by referring two enlisted accessions candidates, or to E-3 by referring four enlisted accessions candidates who join the Delayed Entry Program or Delayed Entry Training.

A WEAR event is characterized by the direct interaction of Air Force and Space Force personnel who educate and increase public awareness of the Air Force and Space Force and could potentially provide numerous leads for recruiters, aiding the recruiting mission.

Operation Neptune’s Storm

Unites military, local maritime law enforcement agencies

ampa Bay witnessed a display of maritime power as Operation Neptune’s Storm, a large-scale joint maritime demonstration led by the 6th Security Forces Squadron Marine Patrol Unit, took place in Hillsborough Bay, May 17.

As one of the few Air Force installations with a marine patrol unit dedicated to securing its shores, MacDill Air Force Base has the unique challenge of protecting its own coastline to carry out its mission of generating global air refueling support.

Seventeen vessels launched into the bay as a collaborative effort between Tampa’s community, state, local and federal partners. The mission of the operation was to strengthen coordination, response capabilities and mutual understanding between the agencies.

Col. Jason Parker, 6th Mission Support Group commander, emphasized the significance of Operation Neptune’s Storm in enhancing regional security.

“This operation demonstrated the collective strength and preparedness of our partners in safeguarding our coastlines,” Parker said. “Operation Neptun e’s Storm highlights the seamless coordin ation between military, state, and local agencies to protect our national interests and ensure the safety of 10

our communities.”

The maritime exercise involved several military assets, including bo skis, helicopters and personnel from the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Coast However, it was not just the military involved in this display of readiness. law enforcement agencies joined forces to ensure the success of the operat Agencies such as the Hillsborough County Sheriff ’s Office, Manatee Sheriff ’s Office and the Tampa Police Department played integral role demonstration.

Capt. Toyre Hudson from 6th MSG emphasized the significance of ration among agencies.

“Operation Neptune’s Storm provided us with an opportunity to wor in-hand with other law enforcement agencies,” Hudson said. “By pool resources and expertise, we enhance our ability to protect and serve o munities effectively.”

Operation Neptune’s Storm served as a testament to the commitm readiness of Tampa’s community, state, local, and federal partners to ov any challenges and emerge victorious in the face of potential threats.

(U.S. Air Force graphic by Dan Hawkins) “As part of our whole of service approach to recruiting, and the ‘Go Blue-Stay Blue’ campaign, we need Airmen and Guardians to connect with their local communities through visible participation in community activities, volunteer work and speaking opportunities that allow them to tell their Air Force story,” said Brig. Gen. Lisa Craig, Air Force Recruiting Service deputy commander. “All Airmen and Guardians, regardless of their specialty, should think of themselves as recruiters, and the WEAR program is a great way for them to help find and attract the best of America’s talent to serve.”

Approval for WEAR program is limited to those events where Airmen are directly speaking to potential applicants or influencers about Air Force opportunities; mere attendance at an event does not qualify. Applicants are defined as individuals within the 17- to 39-year-old range; and influencers are defined as parents, community leaders, teachers, counselors, coaches, etc.

Members may receive up to 14 total days permissive TDY to attend WEAR events each year. WEAR events are approved on an individual basis. For those events where multiple Airmen are attending, each attendee must submit a completed form for approval. WEAR requests must be first approved by the individual’s commander in accordance with AFI 36-3003.

One Airman’s WEAR Experience Airman 1st Class Octavia Tann, a personnel programs manager with 2nd Air Force at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi, recently took advantage of the WEAR program after learning about it on myPers. Tann proactively reached out to her former high school’s JROTC instructors in Dudley, North Carolina, as well as Staff Sgt. Charles Coffin, a local Air Force recruiter with the 337th Recruiting Squadron based in Goldsboro, to create and host a two-part event at her former school May 12.

The first part of the event, which Tann coordinated herself in partnership with the school and Air Force Recruiting, consisted of an open question and answer period that allowed students the opportunity to ask Tann questions about her experiences in the Air Force. Tann also shared photos and squadron gear from Basic Military Training. She also highlighted a few of the awards she has earned while on active duty.

“I also extended the opportunity for the local recruiter to come to the school during the event,” Tann said. “Staff Sgt. Coffin came out with swag for the students, and shared his knowledge and thoughts about what the future could hold if or when they decided to join the U.S. Air Force.”

enforcement officers face every day. The Security Forces Air Staff continues to support law enforcement officers by ensuring that they have adequate resources and training.

Law enforcement is an important aspect of Security Force’s larger mission of base defense. Defenders protect Airmen, Guardians and their families; defend resources, equipment and capability; and assure that air and space missions supporting the DAF are carried out successfully and securely.

Law enforcement is not only important for the safety and well-being of Airmen—it is also a key force-multiplying capability vested in base defense.

As the Air Staff recognizes law enforcement professionals during Police Week, it also reflects on the major efforts underway to support civilians within its law enforcement community. In 2022, the Security Forces enterprise launched an effort to build the law enforcement specialty directly within the civilian career field. This required selecting a subset of the 43,000 Total Force Security Forces population to be uniquely identified as law enforcement practitioners.

Building on that effort, the Air Staff expanded the Police Officer Training and Standards Accredited Academy to accept military students. This enables the Security Forces enterprise to establish a foundation of base defense training, creating base defense-focused defenders within the basic courses while later selecting Airmen for specialized law enforcement training at the academy.

The Air Force Security Forces Center facilitated funding to increase course availability to 500 students per year. All graduates are credentialed and badged federal law enforcement officers. Finally, to sustain officer skills, the AFSFC will introduce a 40-hour annual recertification course and additional instruction for field training officers, sergeant/ supervisors and deputy directors.

Applications must be submitted through the Aim High application to qualify for the Air and Space Achievement and Commendation Medals. All users must create an account and input needed information in the ‘Refer a Friend’ portion of the app in order to receive credit for valid referrals.

In March, the Department of the Air Force launched a Barriers to Service Cross-Functional Team to examine existing policies and procedures to ensure they reflect the service members needed for the future. The programs announced today are part of this initiative and serve as a cost-effective instrument for referring candidates and increasing enlistments throughout the Department of the Air Force.

got the chance to take part in exercises used at BMT. “We used the exercises directly out of my BMT book, giving the cadets a real look into what they would experience during training,” Tann said.

Sharing her own Air Force story and bringing the idea of an Air Force career to life personally helped Tann connect with the students.

“The event helped USAF recruiting because I was able to have small group interactions with the students,” Tann said after the event at Southern Wayne High School. “Because I was open to questions and they felt as though they related to me, they could see themselves through me. The students thanked me for my time and told me how much they enjoyed the chance to learn more about the Air Force.”

How To Submit WEAR Requests Interested members should submit WEAR participation requests via the AFRS Standard Form 10 by completing Blocks I-IV and return it to the AFRS public affairs office at afrshqpa@us.af.mil. If the form does not display, it can be downloaded and edited.

The package will be reviewed by AFRS public affairs and forwarded to the AFRS commander for approval or disapproval. Submissions re-

quire a minimum of 10 business days to process. Approved requests will be returned to the individual with the signature of the AFRS commander or their designated representative. Additionally, the AFRS commander may limit the number of Air Force personnel approved to participate in any one event through the WEAR program.

NOTE: Please submit the WEAR form with electronic signatures; do not send scanned forms. Additionally, to participate, members must be in good standing and have a passing PT score.

Members may receive up to 14 total days permissive TDY to participate, with approval for WEAR program limited to those events where Airmen are directly speaking to potential applicants or influencers about Air Force opportunities.
