DAF senior leaders pay respects at Vietnam Veterans Memorial Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs WASHINGTON (AFNS)—Department of the Air Force senior leaders visited the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., to pay their respects on National Vietnam War Veteran’s Day, March 29.

Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall, accompanied by Office of the Surgeon General Director of Medical Operations Maj. Gen. Sharon Bannister; Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr.; and Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Ramón “CZ” ColónLópez, accompanied by Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force JoAnne Bass, marked the 50th anniversary of U.S. troop withdrawal from Vietnam by paying special tribute to specific service members killed in action during the conflict with whom they have personal or service-related connections.

“This 50th anniversary of Vietnam Veterans Day is an important milestone,” Kendall said. “It’s far enough for historians to render objective observations but close enough that those of us who took part in or were touched by the war still vividly feel its effects.”

While visiting the memorial, senior leaders conducted traditional paper rubbings of the engraved names of Staff Sgt. William H. Pitsenbarger, Lt. Col. Rodney H. Smith, 1st Lt. William F. Ericson II, Capt. Lance P. Sijan, Chief Master Sgt. Richard L. Etchbeger, Capt. Mary T. Klinker and Capt. Steven A. Rusch.

by Airman 1st Class Zachary Foster 6th Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs The legal process for sexual assault and domestic violence victims can be a scary and difficult task, but it’s not one victims need to navigate alone.

“Our job is to make sure that the laws protecting them [the victims] are being followed,” said Maj. Contessa Monroe, Victims Counsel attorney “For example, rape shield laws ensure that certain characteristics such as past relationships and clothing choice aren’t considered in court.

We’re there to make sure that this type of information isn’t pulled out illegally during legal meetings.”

Together Monroe and Staff Sgt. Jammell Jefferson, Victims Counsel paralegal, handle cases nationwide with primary clients at MacDill AFB, Patrick Space Force Base and Homestead Air Reserve Base. The team spends their time walking the victim through the legal system, providing aid with everything from an Air Force Office of Special Investigations interview to testifying in a trial.

“The majority of our referrals come from OSI, the Sexaul Assault Prevention and Response office and occasionally first sergeants,” said Mon-roe. “The reason we only accept referrals is we only have jurisdiction over a certain range of cases.”

Senior Airman Pace a technician by day, collector by night

by Airman 1st Class Zachary Foster 6th Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs Military life is known to come with change and re-locations, however for Senior Airman Dustin Pace, this change has fueled his passion for the arts.

Pace is a 6th Maintenance Squadron metals technician by day and an art collector by night. His interest in the arts began with his childhood and evolved as he pursued a career in the military.

“My interests in the arts all started with my mother,” Pace said. “She wrote poetry all the time when I was growing up. She would help me with writing assignments in school, and I’d get a glimpse of her style.”

As Pace grew, his passion for art developed into an outlet to share his emotions, work, ideas and perspective with those around him, connecting him with a community of like-minded individuals.

“Art helped me to meet people with similar interests,” Pace said. “For people in the art community, sharing art is almost like playing in a band.

We each have individual styles and whenever we share projects it’s like a collaboration by playing different instruments.”

DeCA ‘purples up’ in April for military children Drawing contest, exclusive savings on products

FORT LEE, Va. – April is celebrated as the Month of the Military Child, and this year’s theme, “Taking Care of Our Military Children,” promotes the variety of support available from the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) to help military children thrive.

“Commissaries are proud to honor our youngest heroes during April, the Month of the Military Child,” said Marine Sgt. Maj. Michael R. Saucedo, the senior enlisted advisor to the DeCA director. “Whether it’s special drawing contests or exclusive savings on nutritious products to help their development, we are here for our military children.”

Featured among DeCA’s April events is “The World We Travel” drawing contest for military children grade Pre-K through 12 for the chance to win a prize from Kinder chocolate and a certificate from their local commissary. To enter the contest, the children of authorized commissary patrons must submit their drawing of the favorite places they’ve traveled with their family.

One winner will be chosen per store in the following categories: pre-

kinder to 4th grade, 5th to 8th grades and 9th to 12th grades. Swapping engines is one of the most substantial and difficult tasks an aircraft mechanic may ever face.

After 72-hours of meticulous work, Airmen with the 6th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron have installed a new engine on a KC-135 Stratotanker.

Aircraft statistics are documented for review after each flight. After surpassing 17,000 hours of operation, the 6th AMXS determined that the 1990s engine had been running hotter and needed to be rebuilt to ensure safety and maintain readiness.

With 14 years of aircraft maintenance experience, Vasquez has chan ny engines in multiple airframes. He emphasized that rather than be occupied with the big picture, it’s actually the small things he pays t attention to.

Something as small as a missing screw or misplaced component coul the longevity of the aircraft in the coming years. Four engines mounte the wings of a KC-135 allow Airmen at MacDill to accomplish the Air primary mission of global reach day-in and day-out.

“We can’t fly without the engine,” said Amn. Brian Klatskin, a 6th aircraft propulsion apprentice. “The work we’re doing here is important our Force ready.”

After over 17,000 hours of operation, Airmen with the 6th AMXS were tasked to replace one of the aircraft’s four engines to ensure safety and maintain readiness.

Pitsenbarger was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions as an Air Force pararescueman, mortally wounded while aiding and defending wounded Soldiers from a pinned-down Army infantry unit. He was initially post-humously awarded theAir Force Cross, which was later upgraded to the Medal of Honor. He was the first enlisted recipient of the Air Force Cross, awarded in 1966 for extraordinary hero-ism.

“He believed he could make a difference if he could make it to the ground,” Kendall said.

“He was right and saved lives through his heroic ef-fort.”

Smith was a combat engineer unit commander killed in action during a helicopter crash.

Kendall received an award in Smith’s honor up-on his graduation from the U.S. Military Acad-emy at West Point in 1971.

Ericson was an infantry platoon leader.

His platoon’s position was attacked by an enemy force of unknown size. Ericson was the first to detect enemy movement and alerted his pla-toon, causing the enemy to prematurely initiate the assault. Following the assault, Ericson led a patrol to locate the withdrawn enemy force, dur-ing which, his platoon came under fire again. Ericson charged the enemy position alone and was fatally wounded. Ericson was Kendall’s regimental cadet commander during his first year attending the academy.

“I recognized fellow West Point graduates at the wall,” Kendall said. “My memories of these teammates are etched into me, as well as the moment when we learned of their full sacrifice.”

Sijan, a pilot who was the first and only Air Force Academy graduate to receive the Medal of Honor, was also awarded posthumously.

“Fifty years ago today, the last American troops left Vietnam,” Brown said. “Capt. Lance Sijan evaded capture, plotted escape, battled illness and underwent torture – he never quit, never gave up but he did not return home. His incredible spirit will forever serve as an inspiration.”

Klinker was posthumously awarded the Airmen’s Medal and Meritorious Service Medal.

She was the only member of the U.S. Air Force Nurse Corps and only female Airman to be killed in the Vietnam War. Klinker was participating in “Operation Babylift,” assisting with the evacuation of Vietnamese children, including orphans. Her flight out of Saigon crashed due to a mechanical malfunction, killing her and many of the others aboard. Children that she helped evacuate survived the crash and were relocated to the U.S. Bannister said she coincidentally met one of the evacuated children, now an adult, at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on a separate occasion. The evacuee was there to pay her respects to Klinker, whom she personally credited with her rescue.

“There are few opportunities as sacred as this one,” Bannister said. “This is not only a way for us to stay connected and carry on the legacy of those we lost. It’s one way we can honor all the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country in Vietnam.”

Bannister also etched the name of Rusch, her father, an F-4E Phantom II pilot, who was shot

Bannister shared her story and experience with me,” Kendall said. “Her resilience at such a young age was moving. Her dedication to her father’s legacy is an example for us to study and appreciate. As Maj. Gen. Bannister prepares for retirement, she can be proud of her path. She treated and healed many through her dental skills and sustained the memories of the fallen through her volunteerism and community service.”

“As we mark this important anniversary, let us remember not only the fallen but the sacrifice of all who served and our continued efforts to account for the missing and bring them home,” Kendall said.

Pace explained that the story behind a piece of art is a major factor that sparked his interest in starting an art collection.

“What makes me so passionate is how noble of a craft it is,” he said.

“You’re doing it with your own hands, you’re creating it. Owning that piece [of art] is so special because it doesn’t exist anywhere else in this world.”

Throughout Pace’s military career, he has had several overseas assignments, being stationed in Turkey, Guam, England and Japan. Pace embraced the change as an opportunity to experience different cultures, finding their stories through their art.

Collecting art became a way for Pace to connect and embrace his journey through the military. For each location he visits or is stationed, he collects a new piece to remind himself of the culture that he’d experienced.

Pace even incorporated his passion into his work as a metals technician, putting the same dedication into each project as an artist would in their work.

“Each component I create [for the KC-135] is uniquely vital to our success, so I put all I’ve got into its development,” said Pace. “I treat each project, each component like a piece of art, like that one piece is telling my story as a technician.”

Pace’s passion for art has allowed him to better connect with his military journey and the cultures of which he’s been intertwined. He takes the precision and dedication that he’s learned as an artist and puts it into his career as a metals technician, utilizing every project as an opportunity to grow and develop as a craftsman.

To receive full legal aid from the Victims Counsel, clients must meet certain criteria first. The victim must be an active duty service member or a dependent. In addition, the alleged must also be an active duty ser-vice member. If a victim does not meet the criteria, the Victims Counsel will do their best to assist in finding proper representation for each indi-vidual case.

“We go through [with our client] and discuss all the evidence that we have,” said Monroe. “We decide together what path fits best and what course the available evidence will allow for. Sometimes the best course isn’t pursuing a trial, sometimes it’s as simple as having a discussion with the unit’s leadership to develop a plan to move forward.”

The team offers both restricted and unrestricted reporting, giving victims the opportunity to document an incident without proceeding further in the legal system. Restricted reporting is an avenue that allows a victim the ability to access resources without seeking reconciliation with the other party using the legal system. Unrestricted reporting provides the same resources and more, however, it requires an investigation be opened with OSI. Some longer term and more permanent avenues, such as an expedited transfer, require an unrestricted report in order to qualify.

The primary goal of the Victims Counsel is to take whichever legal course best aligns with the needs of the victim. The legal process can be scary, but the Victims Counsel is here to help military service members and their families through each step of the process.
