Major AdamLuff, Aide-de-Camp tothe DeputyCommanderof UnitedStates SpecialOperationsCommand From ayoungage, Luff wascaptivatedbythe power andgraceof militaryaircraft,a fascination thatwould chartthe course of his life and careerinthe MarineCorps.

Luff ’s journeyintothe world of aviation began atage 5,sparkedbywitnessing a Harrierjet, a marvelofengineeringandpower, take off atClearwaterInternational Airport.

“Irememberthesmell of theocean,how hot it was, andseeing a Harriertake off,” Luffrecalls. “It was that moment I knewwhat I wantedtodo.”

Throughout his youth,Luff ’s enthusiasmfor airshowsnever waned.Heattendedevery event possible, his fascinationgrowing witheach performance. The bombers, fighters, andagiledemonstration teams weren’t justmachinestohi m;theywerebeacons of

possibility.

“It wasveryoverwhelmingwiththeattentionthattheaccidentcreated.Iamaveryprivate personsotoseemyselfconstantlyformonthscaused a lotofanxiety,” said Schuck.“Iamalways gratefulfor the recognitionthatIreceivedandtheopportunitiesgivento me, butit wasahardtimeformementally.”

Schuckaddedthatalthoughtheexperience wasdifficult,she wassupergladthatit broughtapositivelight tonotonlyFloridaLawEnforcement,butalsowomenin lawenforcement.

OnApril21,2023theAmericanAssociationofState TroopersrecognizedTrooper ToniSchuckasthe2023 NationalTrooperofthe Yearforherheroicactions.

“MyhusbandandsonbothservedintheAir Force,” Schucksaid.“Iamstillinshocktoday thatI get theopportunitytofly withtheThunderbirds, IamalittlenervousbutIammoreexcited.”

‘CombatCardinal2024’ rehearseshomestation, deployed readiness

SCOTTAIRFORCEBASE,Ill.—Airmenfromthe375th Air Mobility Wingdemonstratedtheirreadinessskillsduringacombinedmobilityand missionassuranceexercise“Combat Cardinal,” whichtook place March 7 - 15.

CombatCardinal wasdividedintotwoefforts: “CardinalSword” exercised theabilitytorapidlydeploytomeetanycombatantcommander’srequirements, and“CardinalShield”testedthewing’s abilitytorespondtocrisis responseandforceprotectionscenariosathomestationwithfewerAirmen.

“Wedesigned it this waysowecould work onthefundamentalsthatallowusto‘explodeintotheater’ aspartofAirMobilityCommand’s objective toequipallofitswingswiththe capabilityto notonly executemobility fundamentals, butexecutethemflawlesslyandwith speed. Onceatthelocation,wewouldoperateinthatcontestedenvironmentwiththeabilityto disperseandaggregateasneeded,” said Col. John Poole, 375th AMWcommander “Thisexerciseformat alsoallowedustoworkthroughthreatsand adversaryinjectsatourhomestation[topractice]protectingourassets and closeonourobjectives.”

CardinalSword: ForCardinalSword,thewingsimulatedprocessingand sending300Airmenoverseas. Withweaponsissuedandbusesloaded,they deployedtoacantonmentsiteonbase that representedtheirforwardlocation.Additionally, twodeployedhublocationswerecreatedtosimulatethe “hubandspoke”logisticsbuiltintotheAir Force’sdeploymentmodel.

ThelocationstestedAirmen’sskills in operatingoutofbarrencontested environments, with WingInspection Team members developingthreatscenariosasinjectsthattheymayencounterfromenemyforces.

Airmen,regardlessoftheirspecialty, pitchedintoconstructsemi-permanenttentsthatthe375thLogisticsReadiness Squadrontransported to thesite. Medicalpersonnelcoordinatedtoassemblewhatwouldbecome thelocationfortreatingsimulatedinjuries. Meanwhile, membersfromthe 375th ForceSupportSquadronassembledaSingle PalletExpeditionary Kitchen,orSPEK,tofeedthose at thecantonment site.

Scott’sDetachmentX,whichoverseesthewing’ssmall-UnmannedAircraftSystemprogram,providedcompound securitysuchasgetting a visualoverviewofthebattlefield andidentifyingthelocationsof potentialadversaries. Aspecificexerciseinject recalled by Capt. MatthewBolton, Det. Xdirector, involvedavehicle-borneimprovisedexplosive device, orVBIED “[Thevehicle]cametooneofourECPs (entrycontrol points), so weflew thedronetogetagoodlookinsidetofindthatittwoIEDsinside. [Havingthiscapability]ishonestlysomethingthatcouldsavereal livesinthe field,” saidBolton.

ThankstoAltusAir ForceBaseinOklahoma, aKC-46 refuelerlanded atone ofthesimulatedforwarddeployedlocationsto providea platformto evacuatethewounded.Havingthis airframeforthe exerciseaddedan extraopportunityforAeromedicalEvacuation specialiststohonetheirtimesensitive, andmissioncriticalcareforthoseinjuredin combat.

Duringthemasscasualtyportionoftheexercise, medicalteamssetup anenroutepatientstagingsystemwhereAirmenwerestabilizedbefore transportaboardthe aircraft. AEteamsworkedtocoordinatewithmultipleagenciestherapidmovementofthesepatients withminimalinforma-

Thewingpracticedrespondingto a simulatedbombthreat,cyber anddroneattacks, potential violent protestersarriving at thebaseandtoanactive shooterincident. Whilenoneof thesecrisisresponse scenarioswereanythingnewforthe375thAMW, the realtest wasexercisingtheseskillsetswhilemissing300keypersonnel.As withanylarge-scalemovementofequipmentandmanpower, homestation capabilitiescanbecomestretched.

Poolesaid,“Inarealconflict,youdon’tjustdeployandthennothing happensstateside. So, asweoperatethisFlagshipathomewithdegraded resources, wehavesomeadditionalresponsibilitiesweneedtotest. We mustensuretheongoingdefenseofthebaseandensuretheconnectivityof theglobalC2(commandandcontrol)structure. So, that’sreallythepoint ofthisexercise—topracticebothatthesametime That’showarealconflictwouldunfold.”

Overall,bothaspectsofCombatCardinalexercisedcriticalreadiness skillsfortheentirewing Lessonslearnedfromthiswillbegatheredand thenappliedto futureexercisesandreal-worlddeploymentsthatareon thehorizonforthe375thAMW.
