ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS)—TheDepartmentoftheAir Forcehasissuedguidanceeffective Feb. 27 implementingDepartmentofDefense policiesoutliningprivacyofcommandnotificationofpregnancy, administrativeabsencefornon-coveredreproductivehealthcareandunitfundedtravelforthoseseekingnon-coveredreproductivehealthcare
Non-coveredreproductive healthcareisdefined inthispolicyaslawfully available, assistedreproductivetechnology andnon-coveredabortions.
Theseupdatedpoliciesareintendedtoassistmemberswhomayneed totravelgreaterdistances, take moretime away fromwork andpay higherout-of-pocketexpensestoaccessnon-coveredreproductivehealth carebecauseoftheirspecificdutylocation.
DAFpolicy changeseliminateroutinepregnancynotificationtocommandersfortheentirepregnancy, anextensionofDoDpolicywhichdelaysnotificationupto20weeksgestation.Previously, commanderswere notifiedofamember’spregnancywhentheyreceivedaprofilewhich specified“pregnancy.” Underthenewpolicy, aprofilefortheentire pregnancyislabeledas“medical”andreflectsanynecessarydeployment,assignmentanddutylimitationsasdeterminedbythemember’sprimary careorwomen’shealthproviderandpublichealth.
Thenewprofileprovidesprivacyformembersandensurescommand-
ersexerciseobjectivityanddiscretionwhenhandlingreproductive healthcareinformation.
Additionally, allpregnantservicemembersshouldseekprenatalcare by12weeksgestationtoobtainpropercare, appropriatedutyrestrictionsandoccupationalhealthcounseling
Updatedadministrativeleavepolicyallowsservicememberstorequestanadministrativeabsencewithoutbeing chargedleavetoaccess non-coveredreproductivehealthcare AirmenandGuardianswillrequesttheadministrativeabsencethroughLeaveWeb. Thesystemnow hasthecapabilityforthemembertoselect“Non-coveredReproductive HealthCare”fromthepermissive TemporaryDutylistandsubmitthe requesttotheircommanderforapproval.Theyshouldincludeanattestationthattheyhaveavalidmedicalconditionthatmeetstherequirementsforthistypeofleave
Changestopre-existingtravelreimbursementpolicyestablishtravelandtransportationallowancesforservicemembersanddependents whomusttraveltoaccesstimelynon-coveredreproductivehealthcare thatisnot availablewithinthelocalareaofthemember’spermanentor temporarydutylocation.Servicemembers’organizationswillcreate a lineofaccountingwithinDefenseTravelSystemusingEmergencyand SpecialProject Code83.DTSwillhavethecapabilityoftrackingutilizationand reimbursementoftravelbenefits.

TheDAFwillremoveadverseinformationfromrecordsofthosecurrentlyservingservicememberswhosoughtanexemptiononreligious, administrative, ormedicalgroundsandwhoreceivedadverseactions solelyduetotheirrefusaltotakethevaccine. Memberswillbenotified bytheircommandortheAir Force PersonnelCenter/AirReserve PersonnelCenter.

The6thMaintenanceGroupmetalstechnologyandcorrosioncontrol unitsrecentlycollaboratedtocreateandimplementanewwheelpaintingstanddesignthatwillallowAirmentoproducetwiceasmuchinhalf thetime.
The6thMXGcorrosioncontrolunitrecognizedtheneedtomaketheir paintingandprimingprocessesfortheKC-135aircraftontheinstallationmoreefficient. Identifyingtheneedfornewequipment,thecorrosion controlunitrequestedassistancefromthe6thMXGmetalstechnology unitforaremedy.
“Whenthecorrosionshopreachedoutforaredesign,wejumpedatthe opportunity,” saidAir ForceStaffSgt.RyanStrittmatter, 927thMaintenanceSquadronmetalstechnician. “This wastheperfecttimeforusto demonstrateourskillsinacreativeandproductive way.”

FORTLEE, Va.— During March, theDefenseCommissaryAgency (DeCA)joins withtheAcademyofNutritionand Dieteticsincelebrating National NutritionMonth. “Fuelfor the Future,” thisyear’s mantra, focuses onsustainability, savingmoneywhilestaying nourishedandmodeling healthy eating habitsinthehome.
AccordingtoDeCAHealthand WellnessProgramManager Deborah Harris, aregistereddietitian whoholdsa MasterofPublicHealth degree andis a certifieddiabeteseducator, several waystofuelforthefuture are tosavemoneywhile choosingnutrient-densefoods, instillingtheimportance ofa healthy eating patternintoyour children andpreparingmore meals at home.
The commissaryshouldbe yourfirstdefensewhenlookingtostaynourishedwhilesavingmoney, saidScottDaly, DeCA’s chief ofCommissary StoreBrands.

TeamMacDillandtheDepartmentofDefenserecognizesMarch1-31, asNational Women’sHistoryMonth.
Thisyear’stheme,“Celebrating WomenWho TellOurStories,” acknowledgesthepioneeringwomen,pastandpresent,asimportantcontributorstotheachievementsofourmilitaryservicesandcivilianworkforce.
Morethan230,000womenserveintheactivedutymilitary,comprising 17percentofallservicemembers,andwomenconstitute33percentofDoD civilians.
We recognizetheaccomplishmentsof womenintheDepartmentand theircontributionstonationalsecuritywhichhelpsmaximizetheDepartment’s warfightingcapabilities.Overtime,newdoorshaveopenedtowomenintheDepartmentinpreviously closedmilitaryspecialties,combatpositions,leadershiproles,andcommandpositions.
Witheachnewopportunity,womenhaveemergedasmilitaryleadersin combatoperationsandassumedvitalcommandpositions.
CaptainRosemaryMariner,thefirstwomantocommandanoperational naval aviationsquadronduringOperationDesertStorm, had astoryto share.In2018, FirstLieutenantMarinaHierlbecamethefirstwomanin
theMarineCorpstocommandaninfantryplatoon.OnNovember21,2022, Air ForceCaptainRheaMcFarlandbecamethefirstAfricanAmericanfemaleC-17pilottoreceivetheDistinguishedFlyingCrossforherleadership inAfghanistan.
ThesewomenandtheirstoriesrepresentthemanyuntoldstoriesinDoD ofwomenwhotookonmission-criticalassignmentsandadvancedasleadersinthemilitary, research,science, technology, engineeringandmathematics.
TheDepartmentcelebratestheircollectivevictorieswhichstrengthen ourworkforcebecausewecanleveragetheiruniqueexperiences,perspectives,andexpertiseinsupportofourmission.Inaddition,theyinspirefuturegenerationsofyoungwomenfromallbackgroundswhodesiretobea partoftheDepartmentandshareinitsmission.

Theprocessoriginallyconsistedofblasting, inspecting, masking, priming, paintingandtouch-upswiththemajorityoftimespentdryinginbetweensteps. Intotal,Airmenwerespendingasmuch aseighthoursper wheel andupto72hoursona set.
“Beforeweimplementedtheupdateddesign,it wastakingthreefull daystocompleteasinglesetofwheels,” said Air Force Tech. Sgt.KurtisGieger, 6thMXGsheetmetaltechnician.“Nowwehavebeenableto doubleouroutputinthat same spanoftime.”
Overthecourseofamonth, Strittmatterandhisteamdevelopedan alternativedesignthatincludedspacefortwodifferentlysizedsetsof wheelsand afreerotatingcomponentallusingequipmentandresources available in hisshop.
ThemajorimprovementinthedesigncamefromthefreerotatingcomponentwhichallowsAirmenaccessto100%ofthewheelwhilepainting. This change wasmonumentalbecauseitcompletelyremovedthetime spentdryingthe wheelspriortotouching up missedcomponents.
To ensurethequalityofthe equipment,Strittmattermaintainedconstantcommunicationwiththecorrosionshop, takingtheirfeedbackand implementing itintolaterdesigns.
Strittmatterandthemetalstechnologyunitperformednumeroussafetyevaluationsastheyranthedesignthroughthe6thMXG chain of commandandpriortoimplementingitin the workplace.
Currently, StrittmatterandthemetalstechnologyunitareintheapprovalprocesstopushthedesignacrosstheAir Force. Thefinaldesign requiresminoradjustmentstoaccommodate alternateaircrafttires.
“Wehavebeenworking closelywiththeAir ForceResearchLabto pushthedirectivetootherbases,” Strittmattersaid.“Theyhavebeen abletotakeourdesignanddevelopa3D renderingthatwill hopefullybe usedbyotherinstallationsfacingsimilarissues.”
