ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS)—Civilianspousesofservicemembers assignedoutsidethe U.S. maynowhaveaneasiertimefindingemployment.
TheDepartmentoftheAir Forcehasimplementedadirect-hireauthoritypilotprogramforlocationsoutsidethe U.S. authorizedbythe National DefenseAuthorizationActofFY22. Thisauthorityenables officialstoquicklyhirequalifyingspousesforcertainpositionson a temporarybasis Thepilotprogramis availableforoverseaspositions asdeterminedbythehiringofficials;previously, military spousescould onlybeselectedfromcompetitivehiringprocedures.
Direct-hireauthorityenablesanagencytohireanyqualifiedapplicant throughanexpeditedhiringprocessthateliminatesmanyofthetraditionalsteps, includingconsiderationofcompetitiverankingsandratings.
“Werecognizethatspouseemploymentis a fundamentalqualityof lifeissueforourAirmenandGuardians, especiallyforfamilies inoverseaslocations,” said John Carbone, directorofcivilian forcemanagement, Air ForceManpower,PersonnelandServices. “We’rehopinghavingaccesstothisnewhiring authoritywillopenupgreateremployment

The positionsmustbepermanentlylocatedoverseas, underthegeneralscheduleor federal wagesystem, and GS-15and below andequivalent.
Additionally, spousesmustbe ontheservicemember’s permanent changeofdutystationordersatgovernmentexpense, withinthelocal communityareaofthe dutylocationandresidewiththeservicemember.
Theinitialemploymentappointmentwillnotexceedtwoyearsand canbeextendedintwo-yearincrementsfornomorethanatotalofsix years. Theappointments willendwhentheservicemembertransfers backtothe U.S. ortoanother overseas assignment.Theymay also end duetodivorce, deathofthesponsororuponthesponsor’s retirementor separationfromactiveduty.

Thismission wasthefirst-timeaerialrefuelingaircraftfromtwodifferentairrefuelingsquadronsacrossthecontinentalUnitedStates flewsuchanincredibleendurancemission, showcasing thestrength and globalreachcapabilitiesoftheKC-135Stratotankeraircraft.
Thetotaltrip was168hoursindurationwith49.5hoursintheairfortheMacDill crewand 53.5 hoursfor Fairchild.

Longbeforetheshoot down, U.S. officialstookstepstoprotectagainsttheballoon’scollectionofsensitiveinformation,mitigatingitsintelligencevaluetothe Chinese. To prepareforupcoming competitions,Penningtonfollowsthe dailygrindofadheringtoastrictdietandtrainingschedule, where everymealandsecondarecalculated.
“Youhavetostart withhonesty. Youhavetobehonestaboutwhat youeat,howmuchyouweighandbeingabletomakesacrifices,” she said.“Ifyou’repreparingforashow, thatmightmeanyoucan’tgo outwithyourfriendsonaweekend…that’sjustthesacrificeyou makeifyou wanttobegreat.”

“Aimingforthestarsandlandingonthe cloudsisagoodmindset tohavebecauseyou’llalwaysbeproudofyourjourneynomatter whereyouland,” sheadded.
