The challengesservicemembersfaceincludefoodinsecurity, extended waittimesforhousing, drasticallyreducedhousinginventoriesand sudden,sharpincreasesinrentalorpurchasecostsforhousing.
AmemofromAustinoutlinedsomeimmediatestepstheDODwill take.“TheDepartmentofDefensehastemporarilyraisedthebasicallowanceforhousinginareas thathavehada10%increasein rental coststhisyear,” hesaid. “Andinplaceswithhousingshortages, weare extendingtemporarylodgingexpensereimbursementssothatfamilies havemoretimetofindahomethatfitstheirneeds.
“Andwhenitcomestomakingsureourpeoplehaveenoughtoeat, we’vecreatedanewtoolkitthatwillhelpleadersidentifyservicememberswhoarestrugglingandconnectservicemembersandtheirfamilies toresourcesandsupportprogramsandmore,” hecontinued.

Pushingthebodytoitslimitstoget alittlefurtherdowntheroad.Getplentyofrest,drivingfatiguedisalwaysdangerous, butaddwinterweather anditcanbecomedeadly.TheNationalHighway Traffic SafetyAdministrationshowsthatthenumberoffatalities involvingadrowsydriver was697or1.9percentoftotal fatalitiesin2019.

Derek Walton,individualequipmentmanagerintheLogisticsDirectorate.“Ourresponsibilityistoputanacquisitionstrategyinplaceoncethe testingandfinalsolutionsaremadeonthecompositionofthestandardizedgearensemble.”
Replacingindividualequipmentwithnewtechnologyinvolvesstringentresearch,testingandevaluationprocesses.Waltonandothermembersoftheteammanagetheprocessfromcradletograve.Afterdecisions aremade, theypurchasesamplesofequipmentfromvariousvendorsand sendthemtoseveralbasesfortestingandevaluation.
“Upgradingthe23standardindividualequipmentitemsissuedtoeveryDefendertakestime, butwe’recommittedandoureffortsareproducingpositiveresults,” Waltonsaid.
High-speedballistichelmet
High-speedballistichelmetsareonesuchexample. Nowstandardissueforsecurityforces, thenewhigh-cuthelmetsprovidesuperiorcomfort andfeatureabuilt-inrailsystemtoaccommodateaccessoriessuchas nightvisiongogglesandtacticalcommunicationsequipment.Morethan
27,000ofthe28,934helmetspurchasedbyAFIMSCarealreadyinthe field.TheremaindershouldarriveatunitsbylateDecember.
In2020,theAFSFCcommittedtoa Total Forcepurchaseofbodyarmor developedspecificallyforwomeninsecurityforces.Thenewarmoris lighterandabetterfitthanpreviousbodyarmor. Italsoimprovesmobilityandprovidesbetterprotectionofthevitalorgans.Theinitial7,688 vestsweredistributedacrossthe Total Force.
In2021,AFSFCbegantestingandevaluatinganewmodularscalable vestatseveralbases.Thelatesttacticalbodyarmorfeaturesadditional paddingfortheshouldersandhips, andapouchdesignedtopreventarmorplatesfromshifting.Thevestscanbeconfiguredfordifferentlevels ofprotectionbasedonmissionrequirements.Today, securityforcesAirmenareequippedwithmorethan8,100ofthenewvests.
AnotherbranchoftheLogisticsDirectorate, the WeaponsandMunitionsDivision,isfurtheringAFSFC’scommitmenttoaccelerate change byintegratinganddeliveringinnovativesolutionsthatmodernizesecurityforcesweaponsandgroundmunitionssystems.Thedivisionalso supportsandadvocatesforallusercommunitiesacrosstheAir Force enterprise, notjustsecurityforces.
“OurunitvalidatesandapprovesallrequirementsforweaponssystemsandmunitionsthatenableDefendersacrossthe Total Forcetosus-
tainasafeandsecureoperatingenvironment,” saidRandyRoth, WeaponsandMunitionsDivisiondeputy chief.
Thedivisionhasenhancedlethalitybymakingsignificantcontributionstoseveralrecentweaponsmodernizationinitiatives.
AFSFCbeganshippingtheM18modularhandgunsystemstosecurity forcesunitsinearly2019.TheM18modulardesignandergonomicfeaturesimprovetargetacquisitionandaccuracy, outperformingthebulkier M9,whichhadbeeninuseformorethan30years.TheM18canalsobe customizedwithsmall,mediumorlargehandgrips.AFSFCmanagedthe purchaseof48,860andfieldingof38,708M18s.
AnotherrecentacquisitionisthefullyautomaticM4A1carbinerifle, anupgradetothesemiautomaticM4,whichfiresonlyathree-round burst.Defendersarecurrentlytransitioningtothenewweapon. Forsecurityforces, theM4A1willbeequippedwiththedirectviewopticthat magnifiesata1:6ratio.
“It’sgoingtoincreasedefenderlethalitybyimprovingobservation, identificationandtargetaccuracy,” Rothsaid.AFSFCmanagedthepurchaseof50,000 DVOsandwillbeginshippingthemtounitsinthefirst quarterof2022.
TheM110A1isreplacingtheM24precisionrifle, whichhasbeenin
usesincesecurityforcesestablishedthe closeprecisionengagementprogram20yearsago.Thenewweaponcomeswiththesamescopeasthe M4A1andhasabulletdropcompensatorfor7.62mmammunition.It willbefittedwitha3:24magnificationopticthatincreasesmaximum effectiverangeandenhancessurveillance.Thesystemalsohasmilitary standardrailstoallowattachmentofaccessories, suchasa clip-onnight sight.That wasnotanoptionwiththeM24.TheM110A1providessemiautomaticfiretoincreaseengagementspeedwhenencounteringmultiple targets.AFSFCmanagedthepurchaseof1,464M110A1s. Deliveriesto unitswillstartinthefirstquarterof2022.
TheCenterisalsoreplacing50-caliberroundswithheavierbrass shellswithapolymer-basedalternative.“Justrecentlyapprovedbythe NonnuclearMunitionsBoard,thenewlight-weightpolymer-basedshell casingsareidealforagileHelorescueunits,” Rothsaid.“Wepredictthese roundswilleventuallygetintothehandsofourground-basedunitsand Defenders.”
“AtSecurity ForcesCenter, westrivetofindthebestsolutionstoefficientlyprocureanddeliverthelatesttechnologyacrossthe Total Force,” saidBryanGillespie,AFSFCdirectoroflogistics.“Aboveall,we want DefenderstoknowwearehereforthemandencourageDefendersand commandersaliketoreachoutwhentheyhavequestionsandconcerns, orareinneedoflogisticssupportandsustainment.”
“Thestepsoutlinedintoday’smemowon’tsolveallthe economicworriesthatourmilitaryfamiliesface.
