AirmenandGuardianswhoreceivetheCOVID-19BivalentBooster releasedinSeptemberareauthorizedaone-dayspecialpassfrom theircommanderaslongastheboosterisadministeredbyDec. 1.
DepartmentoftheAir Forcecivilianemployeeswhoreceivethecurrentboosterduringthe dutydaythrougheitherDefenseDepartment orprivateprovidersareauthorizeduptofour
hoursadministrativeleave. Additionally, civilianemployeesmaybegranted uptotwodays of administrative leave torecoverfromanyadversereactiontothevaccination.
Forservicemembers, timingoftheone-day passwillbeconsistentwithmissionneeds, membersmustpresentdocumentationand commandersmay awardthespecialpass retroactivelytothosememberswhohavealready receivedabooster. TheOfficeof PersonnelManagementauthorizesfederalcivilian employeesuptofourhoursofadministrative leavetoreceivea vaccinebooster shot, which isdesignedtocover“thetimeittakestotravel tothevaccinationsite, receivethevaccination dose, and returntowork.”
Iffederalemployeestakelessthanfour hourstoreceivetheirboostershot,theyshould
begrantedonlythatamountoftimeinadministrativeleave, andemployeescannotreceive leave orovertimeiftheygettheirboostershot outsideoftheir normalworkinghours.

Withathemefor2022of“CelebratingTraditions,” programmanagersattheAir ForceServicesCenterhonoredtheAir Force’s75thbirthdayandgavephotographersa chancetosharetheirfamilyandcultural traditionstohighlightthediversityofmilitaryfamilies, saidSusan Lear, AFSVCphotocontestcoordinator.
“Boththeartcontest(inthespring)andphotocontestallowourmilitaryfamiliestoexperiencedifferentthingsbygivingthemanopportunitytolearnsomethingneworfinetunetheircraftorskillthrough creativeexpression,” Learsaid.
“Artisaworkinprogress, alwaysstrivingforperfection,” shesaid, “butit’stheflawsthatgiveitbeauty. Creatingsomethingremindsus weareaworkinprogresstoo, alwayslearningnew waysandaccepting thatsomeof ourflawsare perfectionintheend.”

“Ihavetoadmit,IdoubtifIwereinthemomentthatthephoto was taken,Iwouldn’thaverecognizedthebeautyforwhatit was. Seeing someoneelse’sviewsoftheworldthroughphotographyallowsustosee thingswemighthavemissedotherwise,” Comptonsaid.
Nearly400photographerssubmittedentriestothisyear’sphotocontestwitheachevaluatedbythreejudgesforimpact,creativityandtechnical excellencebefore awardingfirst, secondandthirdplaceinfive categories.
“Wehadabroadrangeofartisticandtechnicalskilllevelsofparticipantsfromaccomplishedphotographerstonovices, with photographers asyoungas6 yearsold,” Learsaid.
Decidingonthewinners wasn’teasy, added Kevin Watt,oneofthis year’sjudges.
“ThequalityvariedbutamongstthoseIjudgedtobethebestineach category, Ihadtoreallylook closelytoseparatetheverybestfromthe rest,” hesaid.“Manyofthe photosgaveyou that‘Ohwow!’moment uponfirstseeingthemandthosephotosimmediatelyrosetothetopof myscoringlist.”

Thiseffortbuildsoninitiativesfrominstallations likeHillAFB, Utah,and VandenbergSpace ForceBase, California,to augmentbase powersupplywithsolarenergy.
Inalignmentwiththe CAP, prioritythreeandExecutive Orders 14008and14057,theDAFalsoplanstoconvert 100%of itseligible non-tacticalvehiclefleettozero-emissionvehiclesby2035. Withmore than 48,000 vehicularassetsacrossinstallations, the DAFsees fleet electrificationasanopportunitytoimproveresiliency, decreaseoperationandmaintenance costs, andreduce greenhousegasemissions.
InDecember2021,theDAFkickedoffthisambitiouseffortattwopilotsites, JointBaseAndrews, Maryland,andJBMcGuire-Dix-Lakehurst,New Jersey, tohelpunderstandinfrastructurerisksanddetermine preferredfunctionalrequirementsforvehicles In2022, theDepartment kickedoff effortsat15additionalinstallationsandisworking rigorouslytodeveloppolicyguidanceinpursuitoffullnewterrainvehicle fleetelectrificationconversion.
TheDAFisleveragingexistingenergyresilienceefforts–likeInstallationDevelopmentPlans, InstallationEnergyPlans, andEnergy ResilienceReadinessExercises–toensurethistransitionisdonewith futureneeds andmission capabilitiesinmind.
TheseinitiativesshowcasetheimportantstepsthattheDAFistakingtoelevatereadiness, developnext-generationenergytechnologyto enhanceinstallationenergyresilience, realize theobjectivesoutlinedin theClimateActionPlan,andultimatelycreategloballongevityofthe environmentandfutureforce.
