ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS)—TheDepartment oftheAir Forcehasdevelopedseveral products designedtoassistaircrewinmakingthemost informeddecisionsaboutwhethertoflyduring theirpregnancy.
InApril2022,theDAFissueda clarification ofpoliciespertainingto aircrewduringpregnancy. Sincethen,theDepartmentrecognized theneedtoprovideaircrew, commanders, and healthcareprofessionalsgreater awarenessof andtransparencyaroundtheprocessforsubmissionand review of waiverstoflyduring pregnancy.
The Aircrew VoluntaryAcceptanceofRisk, or AVAR,isathree-partdocument(includingariskacknowledgmentpage, anoutlineof medicalrisks, andacceptableflightprofiles) designedtoensureaircrewhaveaccesstothe informationthat willallowthemtomakethe mostinformeddecisionsaboutwhethertocontinueflyingduringtheirpregnancy Additionally, a setoffrequently askedquestions and answerswere developedforadditional assistance. The6thOperationsSupportSquadronradarairfieldandweathersystems unitrestoredMacDill’srunway tofullcapabilitiesbyusingauniqueandunconventionalmethod,Nov. 1.
The6thOSSRAWSunitisresponsibleformonitoringandmaintaininginstrumentlandingsystemequipmentacrossMacDill’sflightline. Thisequipment guidespilotsinsafelytraversingtheairway whichisanessentialcomponentfor missionsuccess.
TheRAWStechnicianswereplacedinanunusualpositionwhentheirbuilding’sheating, ventilationandairconditioningunitmalfunctioned.
“Wedefinitelyhadtostepoutofourcomfortzone,” said Tech. Sgt. Justin Harold,6thOSSRAWSnoncommissionedofficerin charge. “It’sahugelearning curveintryingdifferent waystosolvetheseunusualproblems.”
Haroldsaidthatproperstorageiscrucialformaintainingthelongevityofthe landingsystemequipment,andwiththeHVACsystemcompromised,thecomponentsexposedtoheataboveitsoperatingcapacitywouldrendertheequip-
mentunusable.

NowthattheAir Forceisfacingnewerthreats, Healysaidit’stimeto continuetrainingtomeettheneedsofmodern warfare as ateam.
“Gen.(Mike)Minihan(AirMobilityCommandcommander), (Lt.) General(Michael)Loh, (AirNationalGuarddirector), and Iarein agreementaboutthethreatsweface,” Healysaid.“Forthelastthreedecades, ouradversarieshavestudiedusandexploredeverypossible way toneutralizeourstrategic advantages, especially ourmobilityenterprise AMC’sMobilityManifestoisa clear-eyedacknowledgmentthat wemustbereadyforthepacingthreatbyfocusingoncommandand control,navigation,andmaneuveringunderfireatspeed.”
ThegeneralthenhighlightedhistwoprioritiesforAFRC: Ready Now!andTransformingfor theFuture.
“ReadyNow!isvitalbecausethefrankrealityisthatourentireenterpriseasanAir Forceisfornaughtifwecan’twintoday,” hesaid,providingexamplesofhowthe Reserve is transformingtoenhancereadiness.
WestoverAirReserveBase, Massachusetts, forexample, recently completedanenergyresilienceexercisewherethebase wascutofffrom commercialpowerfor18consecutivehours. Atthemajorcommandlevel,AFRChasdevelopedexerciseslikeRallyinthe ValleyandRallyin
theRockiestobuildtheskillsnecessarytooperateinaustereenvironments.
“In2021,webeganreallybuildingonagilecombatsupportcompetenciesanddevelopingmulti-capableAirmenwiththeRallyintheRockiesexercisewithourpartnersintheAirNationalGuard,” Healysaid. “UsingtheGarfieldCountyAirportinRifle, Colorado, morethan100 AirmenworkedacrossAir Forcespecialtycodestovepipestooperate a simulatedaustereexpeditionarybase.”
Meanwhile, aircrewswereabletohonetheircombatairliftskills, culminatingwithlandingonhighwaysinrural Wyoming.
Allofthisispartofastressinoculation program thecommand is implementing.
“Stressinoculation wasdevelopedtoincorporatestress-inducingscenariosintoAFSC-specifictrainingandexercises,” Healysaid.“Instead ofbeingadditivetraining, itiscomplimentarytojobqualificationstandardtaskswithpre-builttrainingscenariosandfeedbackmechanisms tieddirectlybacktoAirmanleadershipqualities.”
ThegeneralsaidthatduringOperationAlliesRefuge, thecommand wasluckytohaveacrewoffive Total ForceAirmenwhowereresilient enoughtomeetsomeofthedirestcircumstancesimaginable, referencingthesituationMaj.DomCalderonandhiscrewfoundthemselvesin whileaidingintheevacuationofapproximately124,000peopleoutof AfghanistaninAugust2021.
DuringtheearlydaysofAlliesRefuge, theAir ForceReservegenerated86volunteeraircrewswithin72hours Inall,20%ofevacueeswere taken to safetybyAir ForceReserveassets.
“Manyofthesesituationshingedontheabilityofourleadersatthe lowestlevelstoactoncommander’sintent,evenwhencompletelycut offfromcommunicationsandairtrafficcontrol,” Healysaid.“Resilience isnotanaccident.It’sabyproductofdeliberatereadinesstraining.
Healy closedbysayingthatAFRC’s investmentsinresilience will ensurethateveryReserveCitizenAirmenisconfidentandreadytodo theirjobwhen thetimecomes.

Themission wasexecutedinsidemilitarytestairspaceandincludedtwoKC-46 sortieswithareducedcrewcomplement ofonly asinglepilotandboomoperator. Thefirstsortieflewthepatternonly, followedbyadebriefandassessment.The secondsortieimmediatelyfollowedandaccomplishedafullmissionprofileincluding groundoperations;preflighttasks;takeoff; aerialrefuelingrendezvous; airrefueling on-loadandoffload;landing;anddebrief. The boomoperator wasco-locatedinthe cockpitwiththepilot,exceptwhenperformingboomoperations, andasecondinstructor pilot wasaboardthroughoutthe entiremissiontoserveasasafetyobserver.
TheKC-46’s basiccrewcomplementis apilot,acopilotandaboomoperator, with additionalaircrewaddedforlong-duration flights. AsecondKC-46withafull crew complementofsubjectmatterexpertsaccompaniedthefirstaircrafttoprovideassistancebyradio, ifneeded.
“Thismission waspracticedextensivelyinflightsimulators,” Vogelsaid.“Each phaseofevaluationhasbeencarefullyconsidered,takingintoaccountcrewsafety, aircraftcapabilities, andexistingfederal aviationstandards. Thatallowedusto makeadeliberateandthoroughanalysis ofwhatrisksandhurdlesarepresent,how tomitigatethose, andallowedustorecommendtrainingrequirementstofamiliarize crewswiththebasicfunctionsandcritical controlsofunfamiliarcrewpositions.”
Thisflight waspartofAirMobilityCommand’sbroaderexplorationoftactics, techniquesandprocedures thataddress the uniquestressesexpectedinahigh-end, peer-competitorfight.
“Ihavebeenvery clearwithmyteam: victorywillbedeliveredonthebackofthe mobilityairforces, anddoingsomeans takingahardlookateverytoolwehave atourdisposal,” saidGen.MikeMinihan, commanderofAMC. “Thedynamicsofthe futureoperatingenvironmentrequireusto thinkin wayswemightnotusuallythink.”

Aircrewwho wanttobeconsideredforcrewedflight dutymustpersonallyrequest tocontinueflyingduring theirpregnancy. The AVARwillhelpguidediscussions withhealthcare providersandinform members ofboth knownandpotential, butunmeasured,riskstomakean informeddecision.
To returntoflyingdutiesafterbecomingpregnant,the servicemembermustsubmita waiverfor review bytheir flightsurgeon,obstetrical careprovider, andcommander, whomustcollaboratetodeterminewhethertoapprove the waiver. Allflightsmustmeetapprovedflightprofiles basedonthecommander’sdiscretionand safetyconsiderations.
DAFleadership’sintentisthataircrewareconfident thatthedecisionofwhethertorequest to flyduringpregnancy–ornot–willhavenoimpactontheirmilitary career. Aircrewwhoelectnottoflyhaveotheroptions tocontinuetheircareerprogression, suchasmaintainingcurrenciesinthesimulator, instructingacademics, supervisorof flying, top-3, andmanyothertrainingopportunitiesand duties.
“It wasateameffortto developtheseoptionsforpregnantaircrewsotheycancontinuecarryingoutthemissionstheyaretrainedandreadytoperform,” saidAir ForceChiefofStaff Gen. CQ Brown,Jr.
Aswithanymedicalcondition, theDAFwill continue toreviewaircrewpregnancypolicyandpractices, includinganongoingcollectionofhealthand safetydata.The serviceremainsfocusedonidentifying, analyzing, and appropriatelymitigatingflightsafetyhazardsandexposurestofacilitatethesafeandsuccessfulaccomplishmentofthemilitarymission. Acontinual reviewwillalso driveappropriatemodificationstothe AVARtoallowaircrewtomakethemostinformeddecisiononwhetherto request the continuationofflightduties.
