“ThepurposeofAIMisn’ttonecessarilycreatetankerpilots, but aviators,” Sackeysaid.“Ithinkthemoreexposureweareabletogetthesestudents, themoreinformedandbetterpreparedtheywillwhenmakingthe decisiontobecomeAir Forcepilots.”
OneoftheparticipantsoftheAIMevent was Jack Ubben, UCFAFROTC cadet,whohadrecentlyearnedoneofthecompetitiveAir Force pilotslots.

Thisyear, 7.8millionpoundsofgroceriesweredonatedacrossallfederaldepartmentsandagencies. Of that,DODcontributed4.7 million pounds, or60percent,markinganincreaseofmorethan27percentfrom lastyear. DeCA’sshareofthe4.7million was3.2millionpounds, or68 percent,anincreaseofmorethan33percentfromlastyear’stotal.
Participatingstatesidemilitaryinstallationshelpcollectitemsdesignatedas“mostneeded”byfoodpantries. Commissarycustomersand employeesinthesecommunitieshaveacoupleof waystoparticipate: First,bypurchasingneededfoodandpersonalhygieneproductsfordonationwhileshoppingatcommissaries, orbringingitemsfromhomeand placingthemindonationbinsatthestore;andsecond,bypurchasing prepackageddonationbags availableincommissaries.
Theestimatednumberofbagssold was81,423thisyear, totalingapproximately$854,070ingroceries. DeCA’stotalestimateddollardonationvalueforthe2022FFFcampaignisapproximately$3.2million.
Oncecollected,installationofficialsworkedwiththecommissaryto deliverthedonationstolocalfoodbanks.
Thedemandfordonationshasincreasedthisyearasmorefamilies across the U.S. strugglewithhighfoodcosts. Accordingto the USDA
morethan34millionpeople, including9million children,arefoodinsecureintheUnitedStates. Manyhouseholdsthatexperiencefoodinsecuritydon’tqualifyforfederalnutritionprogramsandvisittheirlocalfood banksandotherfoodprogramsforextrasupport.
“Theannual Feds Feed Familiesfooddriveisagreat wayforcommissariesandmilitaryfamiliestogivebacktothecommunitiesthathost usaroundthenation,” saidMarineSgt.Maj.MichaelR.Saucedo, senior enlistedadvisortoDeCA’sdirector. “Thesummermonthstypicallysee foodbankdonationsfall,soit’stheperfecttimetosetasideafewitemsto donate. Thisyearespecially, alittlereallygoesalong way.”
AboutDeCA: TheDefenseCommissaryAgencyoperatesaworldwide chainofcommissariesprovidinggroceriestomilitarypersonnel,retirees andtheirfamiliesinasafeandsecureshoppingenvironment. Commissariesprovideamilitarybenefit,savingauthorizedpatronsthousands ofdollarsannuallyontheirpurchasescomparedtosimilarproductsat commercialretailers. Campaigning, Austinsaid,meansconductingandsequencingthemilitaryactivitieswhichovertimeshiftthesecurityenvironmentinfavorof theUnitedStates.
“Itmeansworkingtolimitanddisruptmalignactivitiesbyourcompetitors,” hesaid.“We’rebuildingandexercisingtheforcesthatwe’llneed inacrisisoraconflict,includingrequesting$135billiondollarsinlast year’sbudgettofurtherinvestinourreadiness.”
To buildanenduringadvantagefortheUnitedStates, Austinsaid, thedepartmentisworkingtofurtherstrengthenthefoundationsofthe defenseenterprise.
“Innovationiscentralhere,” hesaid.“Lastyear, forinstance, weestablishedtheRapidDefenseExperimentationReserve, whichfundsdifferentpartsofthedepartmenttoworktogethertofillcriticaljoint warfightinggaps. Andourfiscalyear2023budgetrequestincludedmorethan $130billionforresearch,development,testingandevaluation—that’s thelargestR&DbudgetnumberinDODhistory.”
Thedepartmentisalsoworkingwithindustrypartnerstostrengthen supply chainswithinthedefenseindustrialbase, andtacklingthedangersof climate change, includingensuringthatthemilitarycancontinue tooperateinbothhotterandharsherenvironments.
“Aboveall,theNDSdemandsevendeeperinvestmentsinourpeople,” Austinsaid.“Theywillalwaysbethisdepartment’smostvaluableresourceandthebedrockofAmericansecurity. Andthat’swhythepresident’sbudgetincludesa4.6%payraiseforservicemembersstarting January1,2023.”

“A mixofMAFandOARexpertsledto awardsubmissions beingaddressed thoroughlyandwiththe mindsetof recognizing actionsina waythatwillendurewhilepreserving reverencefor our mosthallowed medals. Consequently, somesubmissions wereupgraded or downgradedtoreflect thedistinctcontribution ofthe Airman orteam,” saidBrig. Gen.GeraldDonohue, AMC’sdeputy director ofStrategy, Plans, Requirements and Programs, who served as the award board president. Donohuepreviouslyservedas the 379thAirExpeditionary Wing commander atAl UdeidAir Base, Qatar, duringOAR,throughwhichmostevacuees were processedonthe way totheir final destinations. “It’s importanttonotethatweconsideredthecontributions of crewsasteams, andintheend, there wasnodisparityin award determinationsamongmembersofthe samecrews.”
Alapseinauthoritiestiedto theend oftheoperationin September2021ledtoan administrativedelayin reviewing higher-level award submissions. AMCworked closely with AFCENT and theDepartmentoftheAir Forcetoresolve theproblem, resultinginnotonlytheSeptember awards board, butalsonewauthoritiesthatallowAMCto convene its ownboardsto awardthesamecaliberof decorations movingforward.
“Make no mistake, weshouldhavedonethislastyearimmediatelyafter theoperation, andIrecognizeour Airmen’s frustrationwiththeprocess,” Minihan said. “We’remaking thatright,andwe’veworkedwithourpartnersacross the Air Forceto ensureAMCisable toswiftlyandeffectively recognize our mobility warriorsastheydeliver warfighting excellenceacrosseverycombatantcommandworldwide.”
