Religious Affairs Airman takes ‘leap of faith’ enlisting in Air Force

by Airman 1st Class Zachary Foster 6th Air Refueling Wing, Public Affairs For Airman Nya Hargis, a 6th Air Refueling Wing chaplain’s assistant, the call to serve came through deeply rooted family ties.

Her mother served as a civilian chapel secretary at Davis Monthan Air Force Base, Tucson, Arizona, and her father retired after serving 20 years as an Air Force engineer.

Although her parents divorced early in her life, they remained “best friends” and committed to setting a positive example for Hargis.

She was born and raised with her mother in Tucson, where she was indoctrinated into the church. Her father traveled for work, occasionally bringing Hargis and her siblings along to see the world.

Gaining a sense of adventure from her father’s military service, and a sense of devotion from her mother, Hargis found a path that would pay tribute to both of her parent’s contributions to the Air Force, as a chaplain’s assistant.

“I feel everyone in my support system helped me through the process,” Hargis said.

Sealed with a Star MacDill recognizes Gold Star Mothers, families

by Airman 1st Class Sterling Sutton 6th Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs Gold Star Mothers Inc., Tampa Bay and MacDill AFB leadership honored the families of fallen military service members, by hosting a Gold Star Mothers and Families Day event on Sept. 24, 2023.

Originally implemented on June 23, 1936, a presidential proclamation declared the last Sunday in September to be recognized as Gold Star Mothers and Family Day. For those Gold Star Families in attendance, having the opportunity to both share their stories, and to offer support to others gives them a sense of community.

“The deepest loss a mother can suffer is the loss of a beloved son or daughter,” said Toni Gross, a Gold Star Mother of U.S. Army Corporal Frank R. Gross. “As the mother of a fallen soldier, I have found healing through service to others.”

DOD announces new actions to prevent suicide in the military DoD News WASHINGTON (AFNS)—On September 28, 2023, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin released a memo directing urgent actions to address suicide in the military community, building upon two years of significant work towards suicide prevention across the Department of Defense.

Following the Secretary’s establishment of the Suicide Prevention and Response Independent Review Committee in 2022, the SPRIRC conducted internal reviews of 11 military installations consisting of 457 focus groups and interviews with 2,106 Service members and 670 civilian staff. Guided by this review and existing research, the SPRIRC made 127 near- and long-term recommendations to address this critical problem within the ranks.

The Secretary’s memo outlines the Department’s campaign to reduce the number of suicides throughout the armed forces across five lines of effort — Foster a Supportive Environment, Improve the Delivery of Mental Health Care, Address Stigma and Other Barriers to Care, Revise Suicide Prevention Training, and Promote a Culture of Lethal Means Safety. The lines of effort are supported by numerous enabling tasks that will transform the Department’s efforts on suicide prevention. These lines of effort are in line with the Secretary’s Taking Care of Our People initiative and emphasize the Department’s commitment to the well-being of the Total Force.

The Department remains committed to reducing the number of deaths by suicide throughout the armed forces and is pursuing an aggressive timeline for planning and implementation of the Secretary’s five lines of effort, prioritizing the most impactful actions to set a solid See SUICIDE, Page 12

by Airman 1st Class Derrick Bole 6th Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs As a Security Forces Airman and a command team executive with more than 11 years of service, one Airman was inspired to train to become a pilot and to serve for as long as he can.

U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Craig Piazza, 6th Air Refueling Wing senior enlisted executive assistant to the commander, was recently promoted to second lieutenant by Gen. David Allvin, vice chief of staff of the Air Force.

“Craig has impressed me from day one,” said Bingham. “He leads unafraid and is motivated to succeed in any situation.”

Piazza plans to serve for a total of 5480 years to earn the title of the longest serving Airman.

“I love this uniform,” Piazza said. “I’m going to wear it until they make me take it off. That’s my idea of being able to give back to the people around me, to the Airmen that make this Air Force great.”

Piazza served as a defender for 10 years before becoming an executive for the 6th ARW command chief. After completing the assigned one year in this role, Air Force Col. Adam Bingham, 6th ARW commander, offered Piazza a position as senior enlisted chief executive to the commander. Recently, Piazza was accepted See DEDICATION, Page 6

Being a part of this team has inspired Piazza to train outside duty hours to pursue his private pilot’s license to give him the best chance at making his dream come true.

“When I first assumed my position as command chief executive, I got to sit in the cockpit of a KC-135 Stratotanker with [Air Force] Col. Ben6

jamin Jonsson, the former 6th ARW commander,” Piazza said. “I had wanted to become a pilot for a long time before that, but being in that cockpit for the first time really got me starstruck.”

Piazza’s vision for his career continues to broaden with each experience the Air Force affords him. His dream aircraft to fly would be the C-17 Globemaster. To him, its highly adaptive mission set relates to the multi-capability of today’s Airmen, and the jet’s role in AMC as a mission support aircraft helps him to give back to the Air Force that has given him everything.

“He has big dreams, and the passion and tenacity to make them all come true,” said Bingham. “No one can know exactly how a life or career will turn out, but I’m quite certain of this: regardless of the path Craig goes down… the winning will continue. I’m excited for what this great Airman will continue to do for the United States of America.

Help for DAF Airmen, Guardians, civilians in event of lapse in appropriations Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS) -- Assistance to reduce potential impacts in the event of a government shutdown on Airmen, Guardians, civilians, and their families is available through various means.

Those experiencing financial difficulties should contact their chain of command, who can provide more information on the financial aid organizations below.

Compensation: The Military Leaders Economic Security Toolkit, located on the Military OneSource website, offers information and support. The site is updated regularly to reflect challenges and policy changes related to economic security.

Unemployment Benefits: Furloughed employees are eligible to apply for unemployment benefits, but excepted employees working on a full-time basis are generally not eligible. Employees who wish to file should do so with the Unemployment Office for the state where the employee worked (i.e., last official duty station prior to furlough). Please be advised, however, that when employees receive retroactive pay, they will be required to pay back any unemployment benefits they received, in accordance with State law. For more

information, see OPM guidance and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Unemployment Compensation for Federal Employees.

Personal Financial Readiness: The Military and Family Readiness Center personal financial readiness program sustains and improves financial literacy and readiness by offering information, education, training, and free personal financial counseling to Airmen, Guardians, and their families. The DAF has also increased the number of Personal Financial Managers available to assist and enhance financial readiness and money management skills for members and their families.

The Air Force Aid Society continues to support emergent needs such as basic living expenses (e.g., food, rent/ mortgage, utilities), vehicle expenses (e.g., payments, repairs, insurance), and child care costs. Airmen and Guardians can submit requests through local Military and Family Readiness Centers and Airman and Family Readiness Centers.

If Airmen, Guardians, or their families are not near an aid organization, they may seek financial assistance from the Red Cross.

A

t MacDill Air Force Base, the welfare of military working dogs is imperative. These loyal canines, alongside their handlers, play an integral role in ensuring the safety and security of military installations every day.

Preserving the health and well-being of each MWD is a dedicated team of veterinary professionals working with highly trained handlers to support and train MWD operations on a regular basis.

U.S. Army Spc. Kaylah Browne, an animal care specialist assigned to the veterinary clinic, has been caring for MWDs for nearly two years. She shares her admiration for each dog’s personality, highlighting that understanding their unique traits, is essential to the clinic’s mission.

The clinic staff regularly checks on the kennels, performs semi-annual check-ups and is readily available to treat any medical issues on site.

Additionally, the clinic staff continuously educates and trains MWD handlers on specialized medical care.

We make sure that we provide quality care to our dogs, regardless of location, said Browne.

Having prior experience as a veterinary technician before enlisting,

Senior Airman Mickayla Stark, a MWD handler assigned to the 6th Security Forces Squadron, understands the interdependent relationship between handlers and their canine partners.

Every mission, training exercise and patrol is a joint effort. These pairs train rigorously - building trust and understanding every day to keep each other safe. With this, handlers must be attuned to the dog’s signals, reactions and needs to provide immediate care on station or in the field.

Stark emphasized that the health of every dog is crucial to maintain mission readiness.

When Stark brought in her canine counterpart, MWD Enrico, she displayed a wealth of knowledge, working alongside clinic staff.

“Handlers are trained to draw blood, insert catheters, give fluids and perform other medical care practices,” she said. “I love to educate my fellow handlers on the medical care each MWD needs.”

Beyond duty, the partnership between MWDs and their handlers remains unbreakable. Exceptional care is not only a duty, but a personal commitment to those who serve selflessly to protect the base.

Browne and Stark are a testament to the level of commitment base personnel show to the MWD pack. Personalized care, regular check-ups and in-house expertise ensure these canines stay in peak condition.

Right here at the chapel, and I want to do the same for others.”

Not only did Hargis’ parents provide a positive influence to join, but she also had help from her childhood best friend, U.S. Air Force Airman Rachelle Brown, a defender with the 91st Missile Security Operations Squadron, Minot AFB, North Dakota.

“My best friend and I actually joined at the same time,” Hargis said.

“We did the entire process together. She was the one who pushed me to finally take that first step to just see the recruiter.”

The Air Force’s “buddy system” allowed Hargis and Brown to be together through every step of the process. From the recruitment center to basic training, they’d rely on one another, using their previous connection to face challenges head on.

“Becoming part of something greater than myself has been such an accomplishment,” Brown said. “To not let fear of the unknown overcome me but push me instead.”

Following basic training, the duo would part ways as they pursued their individual careers.

Brown worked in security forces, honing her protection skills, and

Hargis entered religious affairs where she could help others find clarity the way she had.

Hargis has served in the Air Force for just a year, but during that time she’d discovered a life-long passion, to “help as many people” as she can for as long as she can.

“It’s been a really great year in the Air Force,” Hargis said. “I want to be able to inspire some hope to someone who is in a similar position as I was in, however I can.”

Now, Hargis is working to develop her technical skills, using her time here at MacDill as a steppingstone towards a career devoted to helping others in their time of need.

“The experience I’m getting right now is laying the framework for a life-long career helping others,” Hargis said. “The hands-on experience of getting to know people and understanding how to help them deal with life is invaluable.”

Food Insecurity: First sergeants and Military and Family Readiness Centers assist Airmen, Guardians, and their f amilies in need of f ood security-related grants and loans with referrals to programs such as: U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the Federal Subsistence Supplemental Allowance program, and the Air Force Aid Society.

The FY22 National Def ense Authorization Act established a Basic Needs Allowance. The BNA Program provides supplemental income for military members and dependents whose gross household income falls below 130% of federal poverty guidelines.

TRICARE: In response to the ongoing possibilities of a government shutdown, the Defense Health Agency (DHA) has authorized its TRICARE contractors to continue delivering health care to the 9.4 million beneficiaries of TRICARE. TRICARE benef iciaries seeking medical care f rom private providers should f eel no signif icant ef f ects. Care at military hospitals and clinics would remain largely unaffected. The TRICARE website in-

cludes current information about the impact of the shutdown on TRICARE health plans and military hospitals and clinics.

Overseas and Remote Commissaries: Check status of local commissaries to determine the status of your local store. During a shutdown some non-appropriated fund services may continue to operate. Check with your local installation’s website to determine which services will remain open in your area. If able, plan ahead and minimize its impact on day-to-day routine.

Command, the 6th Air Refueling Wing and Gold Star Families Inc., Tampa Bay, delivered remarks and reflected on the contributions of the service members who have paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.

“We are here today to recognize and honor the family members who have lost a love who served our country in the United States Armed Forces,” said Nefertiti Barnes, 6th Force Support Squadron community readiness consultant.

Although the lives of Gold Star Families are changed forever, many have leaned on each other for support.

“After all that they’ve done for me, and all I’ve been able to do to help other grieving mothers, I would say that Gold Star Mothers are indeed a national treasure,” said Evelyn Brady, Gold Star Mother of U.S. Navy Aircrewman Third Class Mohammed “MO” Haitham.

Gold Star Mothers Inc. has earned federal charter from Congress since it was incorporated in 1929. The group began with 25 mothers living in the Washington, D.C. area and soon spread across the nation.

Gold Star Mothers Inc., Tampa Bay is a private nonprofit organization of mothers who are involved in the community and honoring the lives of those lost.

The organization was named after the gold star banners that families draped in their windows in honor of the deceased veteran.

The flag is officially defined as a white field with a red border, with a blue star for each family member serving in the Armed Forces during any period of war. A gold star with blue edges represents a family member who died during military service.

Along with the numerous Americans who gather, MacDill is honored to host events such as Gold Star Mother’s and Families Day events to show support, and respect towards Gold Star Mothers and their families.

“We are humbled by the presence of all the gold star families in attendance,” said 2nd Lt. Laura Anderson, 6th Air Refueling Wing public affairs officer. “MacDill is forever in debt to what these families have given to our great nation.”

Fighting for a Cause 3K/5K The Short Fitness Center will be a hosting a breast cancer awareness run on Thursday, October 12 starting in the South Field at 6:45 a.m.

U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Samantha Peck, 6th Communications Squadron project manager, is recognized as Champ of the Week by the 6th Air Refueling Wing leadership team at MacDill Air Force Base Sept. 26. Peck filled in as the superintendent for her flight and took charge to lead her Airmen during a Nuclear Operational Readiness Inspection.
