MacDill recognizes veteran POW with lasting impact on personnel

by Stephen Ove 6th Air Refueling Wing historian Veterans of MacDill pause to reflect the passing of one of their finest, Colonel Leroy W. Stutz on July 9th.

Stutz served 30 years at duty stations across the Air Force beginning his career in 1964 earning his wings as a RF-4C Phantom II pilot before completing his upgrade training and heading to the growing conflict in Southeast Asia.

A combat veteran of 64 missions there, it was on his final mission over North Vietnam Leroy was shot down and captured December 2, 1966. He was listed as MIA for the next three years. His status was changed to POW in 1969 and he remained in captivity.

It was not until the Paris Peace Accords were signed on March 3, 1973 that Leroy was

released and he could finally return to the United States and his family.

The core of the life he left behind was his relationship to his wife Karen. Leroy always talked about how much Karen had endured and supported him. As he couldn’t be married as a cadet, Karen had waited four years to marry. After two short years of marriage, he left for Vietnam. Then Karen waited once again, almost seven years, for him to be found and ultimately for his return home.

Upon his return to the United States in 1973 he was medically grounded from flying. Victim of harsh treatment at the hands of the North Vietnamese for almost the entirety of that conflict, Leroy and his wife Karen could be forgiven from ending their time with the Air Force.

They decided to continue to serve.

CENTCOM Chaplain uses faith to inspire change

“Twenty-eight years ago, on my first day as a chaplain, at my first base, I walked in to shake the commander’s hand,” said Col. Khalid Shabazz, U.S. Central Command lead chaplain.

“He refused to greet me because of his preconceived ideas of my religion. It took me nine months of taking care of my soldiers the best I knew how for him to apologize.”

Shabazz is no stranger to the adversity Muslim service members and civilians face every day. As a result, he’s made it his mission to help anyone, regardless of their religious designation, navigate their way to living their life to the fullest.

As the CENTCOM chaplain, Shabazz found the best way for service members to deal with high intensity environments brought on by military life is to embrace their faith.

According to Shabazz, the best part of his career is inspiring service members to take advantage of the resources made available to them, citing, “until you change the way you

look at things, the things you look at will never change.”

Among these resources are Arabic classes, beard and hijab accommodations, conscientious objection for Muslims opposed to serving in the Middle East and dedicated memorandums giving service members the freedom to participate in Friday prayers.

Shabazz also took to social media to spread his message, accumulating more than 600,000 followers through his motivational journey converting from Christianity to Islam.

“Every morning I give a motivational message,” said Shabazz. “I tell my conversion story and do my best to use my story as an example for anyone navigating the same situations I had.”

Prior to his career as a chaplain, Shabazz attended Jarvis Christian College, Texas, where he pursued a path towards becoming a Christian minister. It wasn’t until he met an Islamic soldier that he made the transition to the Islamic faith.

When love takes flight: a dual military family’s journey

by Senior Airman Lauren Cobin 6th Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs In the vast skies, where wings carry the dreams of those who dare to fly, two individuals found more than just a love for aviation; they discovered an unwavering commitment to each other and their country.

Maj. Woody “Hollywood” Bowman and Maj. Meagan Bowman, both pilots in the U.S. Air Force, exemplify the true meaning of love, sacrifice and resiliency as they navigate the challenges of parenthood, their dedication to each other and their military careers.

Both Meagan and Woody knew from early on that they wanted to serve their country as pilots.

Megan, currently serving as the Assistant Director of Operations and Evaluator Pilot for the KC-135 Stratotanker, started her career at the U.S. Air Force Academy in 2012. There, she would meet her husband and discover a strong bong that would stand the test of time.

USAF Mobility Guardian and US Indo-Pacific Command Northern Edge 23-2

by Courtesy article JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii—To enhance military readiness and strengthen partnerships, the United States Air Force and U.S. Indo-Pacific Command are currently conducting two major exercises in the Pacific theater: Mobility Guardian 23 and Northern Edge 23-2. These exercises play a crucial role in maintaining a high state of readiness, fostering interoperability, and ensuring the security and stability of the Indo-Pacific region.

MG23, organized by Air Mobility Command, is a biennial event that brings together forces from Australia, Canada, France, Japan, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States for realistic and challenging training scenarios. The exercise focuses on Mobility Air Force operations, including airlift, air refueling, aeromedical evacuation and combat support. Through real-world scenarios, the training ensures readiness and hones the skills of aircrews, ground personnel and support units to respond effectively to any crisis or contingency.

mates and our Allies and partners during planning and execution will pay dividends today, tomorrow, and into our unquestionably complex future,” said Lt. Col. Jake Parker, MG23 exercise director.

The exercise provides a unique opportunity for participants to train in a joint and multinational environment that fosters interoperability and strengthens partnerships vital to maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific. It allows the various nations to share best practices, exchange knowledge, and build trust, ultimately enhancing collective defense capabilities. Moreover, MG23 is a launch point for innovation where new technologies and tactics can be tested and evaluated, keeping the coalition’s forces at the forefront of air mobility operations.

“This is a proving ground for the MAF’s new status quo tested through the application of flexible and agile concepts,” said Parker. “The MAF will do its part to ensure the Joint Force and our Allies and partners can overcome transnational security challenges by redefining what MAF readiness looks like.”

Simultaneously, Northern Edge 23-2, led by Pacific Air Forces, focuses on joint training and defensive readiness in the region. For the first time, NE23-2 is taking place throughout the Pacific. Encompassing air, land, sea and cyber domains, it brings together the Joint Force as well as international partners to practice and refine skills as well as demonstrate Agile Combat Employment capabilities while focusing on innovation and emerging technologies.

“This has been an invaluable experience for our lead wing command and control and mission generation force elements, working side-by-side with our Japan Air Self-Defense Force and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force partners, significantly improving our interoperability,” said Col. Isaac Bell, 366th Air Expeditionary Wing deputy commander. “Together we exercised distributed operations from Iwakuni to Tsuiki and Iwo To, in a professional and safe manner. Interoperability training events such as these are vital to the future success of joint, multinational endeavors ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Northern Edge is key in maintaining a credible posture in the Indo-Pacific region. The U.S. and its Allies demonstrate their commitment to regional security and stability by conducting these joint training exercises. The exercise also serves to evaluate new technologies, tactics, and procedures, ensuring the U.S. remains agile and adaptive in an ever-evolving security environment.

Both Mobility Guardian and Northern Edge 23-2 are critical components of the U.S. military’s efforts to enhance readiness and strengthen partnerships. These exercises provide valuable training opportunities, foster interoperability, and demonstrate the commitment to regional security. As the challenges in the Indo-Pacific region persist, the U.S. remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining a strong and credible presence in the Indo-Pacific, ensuring security and stability throughout the region.

MacDill defender earns 12 OAY recognition

A

irmen are taught early on in their military journeys about the values that make the U.S. Air Force the supreme air power in the world – integrity, service and excellence. Annually, the Air Force recognizes 12 Outstanding Airmen within the over 250,000-member enlisted force who exemplify these values and have risen as leaders amongst their peers.

Tech. Sgt. Michelle Fernandez, who currently serves as team lead for the marine patrol section in the 6th Security Forces Squadron at MacDill Air Force Base, was recognized as one of the 12 Outstanding Airmen for 2022.

“This award means so much to me because I had a lot of challenges throughout 2022,” Fernandez said.

“To come out as being one of the 12 Outstanding Airmen makes me feel so proud, humbled and blessed.”

Fernandez is originally from Whittier, California where a large portion of her family still lives. She said her motivation for joining the Air Force came from a desire to be a role model for her family and wanting to prove to herself that she could do something great with her life.

Within her 13 years of service, Fernandez has had multiple duty assignments in the security forces career field including overseas and stateside. From July 2018 to March 2022, she served as a master military training instructor and noncommissioned officer in charge of training at the 331st Training Squadron at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas. Fernandez led over 20 flights of trainees through basic military training and trained several other MTIs. She then got orders to MacDill where her leadership abilities were soon put to the test.

“I was coming back to my career field with doubt toward my leadership abilities, and [I] did a lot of selfreflecting,” she said. “I decided to take a step forward and work even harder than I did before. Coming to MacDill was scary, yet exciting. I was ready for the next challenge.”

At her new duty assignment, Fernandez quickly took on the duties of a flight sergeant, a position normally allocated for a master sergeant. Due to manning limitations within 6th SFS, there was a two-month pe-

“We met during Pilot Training,” said Megan with a smile. “I had just flown a really tough sortie. After the debrief I stepped outside the flight room to take a deep breath and pull myself together, and there he was.”

Their dreams of aviation did not halt their aspirations to create a family, however, the journey of dual military service is not without its challenges.

For the Bowmans, being a dual military couple meant having to find balance and cohesion in all aspects of their lives, especially when the demands of their respective careers may seem overwhelming.

Woody praises Meagan’s ability to see issues from various perspectives and find solutions to complex problems, a quality that makes her a spectacular partner, parent and pilot. Similarly, Meagan deeply admires Woody’s commitment to his values, which include being a devoted husband and father, doing what is right even in challenging circumstances 10

and embracing kindness.

Woody, now serving as a joint operational planner at U.S. Central Command, explains, “One of the most challenging aspects of being dual military has been deconflicting our schedules to ensure our family’s needs are met. Having a solid support group of family, friends and coworkers has been crucial.”

The Bowmans have learned to be “all in” with both work and family and have dedicated their full attention to each aspect when required.

“We’ve always been on the same page when it comes to the things that matter most: our family, our values and how we want to raise our kids,” said Meagan. “We know each other’s strengths and lean on them.

Whatever I go through, Woody goes through, too. We share every project, every challenge and every victory.”

USAF, Leroy spent the most of his time after Vietnam at MacDill, crosstraining as logistics officer. Ever the humble servant, his presence inspired members over the two tours and eight years he spent at MacDill as a member of the 56th Tactical Fighter Wing.

Denny Cole, then a junior Airman at the base, joined a chorus of other veterans of the unit in reflecting on Stutz impact on the base. “At didn’t know at first about his reputation, but I noticed him by the way he carried himself,” said Cole. “His demeanor was so calm, just like he was one of the guys. He never talked about his service but that added to the respect he earned by all. I’ve heard it from so many of the others that served with him-- to this day, I have never met a man that inspired so many people, enlisted and officers alike.”

Col Stutz’s military decorations included two Silver Star Medals, two Legion of Merit (one with V), one Distinguished flying cross, two bronze star medals (both with V), two purple heart medals, four Meritorious service medals, six air medals, POW medal, and others.

was clear he had discipline and that resonated with how I wanted to carry myself. After researching more, I found the Islamic religion had a lot more that fundamentally aligned with my beliefs.”

Now, Shabazz finds himself working closely with Gen. Michael Kurilla, the CENTCOM commander, providing insight into Middle Eastern culture. He also claimed the title of first Muslim chaplain to advise a brigadier general, lieutenant general, major general and now a general.

His shared faith has proven instrumental in advising the cultural context to Middle Eastern politics and religion and has provided him the opportunity to use his religious background to reduce tensions with Middle Eastern counterparts.

“My primary role is to advise [Gen. Kurilla] on the culture in the Middle East,” said Shabazz. “My more important role is to aid in dialogue between our partners in the Middle East through our shared faith.”

A shared faith allowed Shabazz the opportunity to communicate with MacDill’s mission partners on a cultural level, Shabazz recommends everyone participate in open conversation as a method of building relationships.

“The best thing I’ve found to better understand each other is to simply talk to one another,” said Shabazz. “I encourage everyone to have

open dialogue about their religious beliefs because I think we’d find we have a lot more in common than you’d think.”

According to Shabazz, 49:13 Quran best describes this ideal, “We created you from a male and a female and made you into peoples and tribes so that you may get to know one another.”

Shabazz explained the quote symbolizes people’s purpose on Earth is to work together towards a common goal. He furthered this concept to encompass the American culture, “Our culture [as Americans] is multinational, multifaceted and multifaith. All of our different perspectives come together to make the dynamic system we live in today. Our ability to interact and communicate with one another is synonymous with our success as a culture.”

After dedicating himself to the Islamic religion, Shabazz renamed himself from Michael Barnes to Khalid, meaning “immortal,” Shabazz, meaning “eagle that flies above all eagles.” The change symbolized his new beginning of his new life, and the Arabic meaning represented the way he intended on living it.

Throughout 28 years of military service, Shabazz’s faith and his desire to help others have served as pillars enabling him to inspire others who face adversity.

As their children grow older, the couple hopes to find ways to include them more in their working lives, fostering a sense of pride and understanding about their parents’ commitments to serving their country.

“Whenever I put my flight suit and boots on, Charlotte [her daughter] says, ‘Mommy going to work,’” Meagan shares. “It reminds me that while being away from our kids is difficult, we are teaching them the value of hard work and dedication. I try to explain to them that just like they get to go to school, we get to go to work!”

The couple made a commitment early on to place their relationship as a top priority, knowing that a strong foundation would serve as the anchor for their family life and careers.

“We made a pact that if we could figure out how to be right as a couple, which included being stationed near each other, we could be right for our kids and our careers,” says Meagan.

Now, the couple embraces change as Meagan opens a new chapter of their lives, preparing to transition to reservist status as an Admissions Liasson Officer for the U.S. Air Force Academy.

“I knew I needed a break from active duty, yet I wasn’t ready to be done serving,” said Meagan. “I’ve since learned that endless choic-

es exist within our military—full and part-time options, location and mission requirements vary greatly depending on the unit. I’m seeing that there can be all sorts of endings to a military career and different versions on how we hold the middle to best support the needs of the member.”

To fellow dual military parents and military parents in general, Woody offers words of wisdom, “Build your community and keep up the hard work. It’s challenging, but it’s worth it.”

Navigating the challenges of parenthood and military careers is no small feat, but with a solid network of family, friends and coworkers, the journey becomes more manageable.

Meagan reflects, “It is important to recognize the difference between the things that serve only to fill your time and the things that serve to fill you up. We should prioritize what truly matters, and not forget to lean on our support system.”

Meagan and Woody remind us that with a strong foundation of love and support, individuals can conquer any hurdle that life throws their way. As they embark on new adventures, their story continues to inspire others to soar to new heights both in the skies and on the ground.

riod where she led the flight of around 30 members by herself. In this role, Fernandez led her Airmen during a nuclear operational readiness inspection which tested the response capabilities of her flight.

After proving her ability to successfully lead her flight, Fernandez became MacDill’s marine patrol lead in September 2022.

Fernandez currently supervises 22 Airmen who are responsible for safeguarding over 7 miles of coastline at MacDill. Her responsibility is to ensure that every marine patrolman is equipped with the knowledge and skills to accomplish their daily duties.

Fernandez’s aptitude for leading has made her stand out as a noncommissioned officer. The NCO tier, comprised of staff sergeants and technical sergeants, focuses on training, supervision, and task execution.

“I believe that NCOs are the backbone of a lot of units,” Fernandez said. “As an NCO, I strive to be a leader and mentor that the junior enlisted tier can go to, and I do my best to make sure they know I will always have their back. I want [Airmen] to see the bigger picture of how they can not only be a valuable asset to the Air Force but reach their full potential in life.”

Fernandez attributes a significant portion of her leadership ability to her time as an MTI. “When I went to be an MTI at BMT, I did not know what type of leader the Air Force wanted me to be,” she said. “Throughout my experience as an MTI, I believe I developed it, and how I developed it is through the Airmen that I trained and the other MTIs that helped me lead the way. I felt like I needed to tailor my leadership style based on the trainees I led, and learning what they needed to be inspired and to perform their duties to become a warrior Airman of character.”

Fernandez said that a great leader has specific qualities about them, which include being honest and transparent in communication and a willingness to lead from the front.

“Leadership is not the same as management,” Fernandez said. “Managers get tied up into day-to-day operations and making sure that the job simply gets done. Leadership involves getting out there with Airmen and relating to them, and being able to not just talk the talk, but to walk the walk. I would never ask my Airmen to do something that I wouldn’t be willing to do myself.”

Fernandez’s impact is not only seen by those she leads, but also those above her. Master Sgt. Alfonso Alfaro, the 6th SFS logistics and readiness superintendent, was Fernandez’s supervisor at the end of 2022 and saw the effect she had on others.

“Michelle’s leadership ability is defined by how she positively influences and empowers people through her diverse approach of maintaining that human factor,” Alfaro said. “She uniquely created a process of listening, learning and cultivating a culture of trust. This foundation is what makes her an exceptional leader amidst her fellow Airmen.”

Throughout her service, Fernandez has developed gratitude toward the Air Force and new motivation for serving.

“The Air Force means a lot to me because of what it has been able to provide for me and my family,” Fernandez said. “The Air Force has given me the opportunity every day to impact people’s lives, and there is not any other job like it.”

The recognition of being one of the 12 OAY is a prestigious accomplishment that Fernandez earned through her resilience, positive attitude and compassion for Airmen, and it’s those qualities that help drive the Air Force’s mission forward.
