From the GM-Select, Mark Krtek

As the air turns crisp and the leaves begin their golden descent, we welcome a new month filled with cozy moments, fresh starts, and a touch of autumn magic. We’ve got a couple of really exciting opportunities coming this month.

The annual BBQ will be taking place and I’m excited to be able to assist in the judging at this event. I’m sure there will be some great food prepared by our community. Looking forward to meeting more of our residents. Please make sure to say hello.

For our new residents we are having a New Member Orientation lead by Sean, the Director of Community Services and a happy hour sponsored by the Lakewood Greeters Club. This will be a great opportunity for our new residents to hear about all the wonderful amenities and “how – to’s” in the community. Please see page 15 to learn more.

We hope you've had a chance to enjoy the beauty of the season right here in our neighborhood—from the changing leaves to the festive front porches. Thank you for being an active part of our community. Whether you're attending events, lending a hand, or simply waving hello on your evening walk, your presence makes this place feel like home. Stay safe, stay warm, and we look forward to connecting again in November!

From the Boardroom

Autumn is here! It is a wonderful time of year with plenty to enjoy: football, cooler weather and leaves starting to turn are just some of the wonderful things that fall brings. This also brings us to the annual budget season. The Finance Committee and the Facilities Development Committee (FDC) have been meeting to develop the 2026 Budget as well as review the Lakewood Improvement Program (LIP) and capital expenditure needs. The Public Budget Meeting will be held on Thursday, November 6 at 7:00 p.m. at the clubhouse—which is open to all residents and it is a great opportunity to learn more about the budget process as well as the financial outlook for 2026.

The Fairway Homes Play Park is nearing completion and should be ready soon! The inclusive design is the first play park of its kind in Lakewood and will welcome children of all abilities. Thank you to the members of the Playground Committee for developing a great space for our younger residents to enjoy.

The Fairway Homes Play Park is nearing completion and should be ready soon! The inclusive design is the first play park of its kind in Lakewood and will welcome children of all abilities.

As I look toward the upcoming events such as “Smokin’ in Lakewood”, hosted by the Activities Committee and the “Dam” Breast Cancer Walk hosted by the Ladies 50+ Club, I am reminded of what a special community we live in. This is made possible by our neighbors and I am thankful that these wonderful people call Lakewood “home”.

14 YEARS OF SERVICE

Celebrating Mark Reid

On December 31, 2025, Mark Reid will retire after more than 14 years as General Manager of both the Lakewood Property Owners Association and the Lakewood Oaks Country Club. The Board of Directors will be honoring Mark with a reception at Lakewood Clubhouse on Tuesday, December 2 from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. All adult residents are invited and encouraged to attend.

No previous General Manager has held this position for as many years as Mark. It would be fair to say no General Manager has done as much to make Lakewood “a great place to live” as Mark Reid, helping put Lakewood in the best position in decades, perhaps ever.

Under Mark’s managerial leadership, the following have been accomplished:

Renovation of the Cove pool and construction of the Cove Pavilion.

Renovation of the East Lake pool and construction of the East Lake Pavilion.

Construction of the Cove playground, relocation of the tennis courts, relocation of baseball fields and the trail on the 23 acres across from Cove.

Replacement and construction of the East Lake playground

Improvements to the Main Entrance Fountain and enhanced landscaping.

Replacement of Fairway Homes playground

Improvements to both East and West Lake Marinas and replacement of all pleasure docks.

Lakewood Clubhouse and Pub remodels.

New and expanded Clubhouse deck

Spillway grouting project for dam safety.

New bunkers and driving range improvement for the golf club, GPS units on the golf carts and the new Copeland Clock.

Lastly, Mark worked in coordination with Board, Staff and Committees to end the year 2025 with no outstanding debt to outside sources—for both the HOA and golf club!

He accomplished all this while working during periods where the strain—from multiple factors—on the General Manager position was enormous.

Please join us and your community to wish Mark well on December 2. Details will be forthcoming via E-blasts, the LPOA website, and Ripples.

The General Manager Retirement Committee

Past Presidents Kathleen Heydon, Terry White, and James Treu

New Member Orientation

Do you feel like LPOA’s governing documents read like the U.S. Tax Code? Do you wonder who plows the snow on your street, why you received a nasty-gram for not having a current boat registration sticker, or what type of roof you can put on your home? Do you have questions about capital improvements or the operating budget? Or maybe you’ve been chewed out by a homeowner because you cut through their yard to get to a community dock, and thought to yourself, “how the heck else am I supposed to reach the dock?”

If you have questions like this, you’ve probably fired up your Facebook App and asked a few simple questions, only to find out that you got the wrong answers from people you don’t even know.

Well, have no fear, because I can help.

We’ll answer these questions and more at our next New Member Orientation on Tuesday, October 21 at 6:00 p.m. at the Lakewood Oaks Clubhouse. LPOA’s New Member Orientations are designed to give an overview of the associations operations and a description of its services, amenities, restrictions and procedures. This is a great chance for members to get acclimated to Lakewood, and ensure that you’re taking advantage of all it has to offer.

In addition to our NMO this year, we are collaborating with the recently re-formed ‘Lakewood Greeters Club’—who will be hosting a happy hour in conjunction with the orientation. Come meet the Greeters and get to know some of your neighbors, as they extend a warm welcome to all those who have just moved in.

Don’t miss out on important information. If you’ve recently purchased your home or missed the last orientations, I look forward to seeing you there.

LAKEWOOD ARTISTS SERIES SEPTEMBER ART EXHIBIT

A place to present artists of all mediums

September and October promise cooler evenings, a red and yellow mosaic of fallen leaves around the shores of the lake, and an exciting new exhibit by three more Lakewood artists in the Argyle Gallery.

Julie Phillips

Recently, Lakewood artist Julie Phillips visited Arles, France, where the Dutch Expressionist, Vincent Van Gogh, spent two years creating much of his most valuable art before his tragic death in 1890. In this year’s exhibit, Julie’s inspiration from Van Gogh is her own version of “Red Poppies.” She continues to experiment and expand her technique with design in soft pastel and oil pastel using basic objects and gemstones. Julie is also a business owner in Lee’s Summit.

Grace Rottinghaus

Also exhibiting this fall is Lakewood resident, Grace Rottinghaus. Grace continues to paint very detailed still life, but her exhibit this fall will include some new outdoor paintings, one of which is an artistic view of Hole #16 on Lakewood Oaks golf course. Grace continues to use her art “to express her poetic view of life.” She is also a talented seamstress and does alterations for many Lakewood residents. When she’s not painting or sewing, Grace is an avid golfer.

Sheila Borne-Bundy

Sheila Borne-Bundy returns to the Argyle Gallery this year after winning three awards in two different Art Shows: Raytown Art Show, Best of Show with “Reflections in Shades of Gray;” Blue Springs Art Show, 3rd Place with “Controlled Bubbles,” and a 2nd Place People’s Choice Award. Sheila is delighted to win awards with her recent approach using different focal point objects with the capacity to reflect the material around them. Fond memories inspire Sheila to paint the retro toys of her childhood, when she and her siblings giggled and laughed away their time together. Her newest painting “Retro Game Night” is a reflection of favorite games they played like Cootie and Chinese Checkers. This year’s garden produced an abundance of flowers for Sheila to paint, and she continues to use a variety of glass and crystal vases to reflect the vivid colors of the blossoms. Her focus on reflection is also evident in Sheila’s work with marbles and mirrors. For years now, Sheila has been painting a unique image to use for her own personal Christmas cards, delighting the friends who receive them.

Summer might be over, but Golf Cart operation in the neighborhood is still bound to happen! Please take a moment to read the LSMO city guidelines as a general rule for how to safely operate your cart in Lakewood. Golf carts are referred to as "neighborhood vehicles" by city ordinance. Here is a snapshot of the rules regarding neighborhood vehicles:

Each person operating a neighborhood vehicle on public streets shall possess a valid driver's license!

Every operator of a neighborhood vehicle shall maintain financial responsibility.

Must be minimally equipped with Headlamps, front and rear turn signals, taillamps, stop lamps, reflex reflectors, exterior mirror on driver's side and either an exterior mirror on passenger side or interior mirror.

No person shall operate a vehicle on the private property of another without the express permission to do so by the owner or occupant of such property.
