August

From the General Manager, Mark Reid

At the time of writing this, we are just a few weeks out from the start of the 2025/2026 school year—so please, soak up these last days of sunshine and enjoy your lakes, pools, and playgrounds.

We have definitely been rain challenged this year, but we are coming back towards normal rainfall. I imagine that those of us who were here during the drought of 2012 will always worry about something similar happening again. As Lakewood Lakes are a body of water on top of a summit with no stream or river flowing into it, it is possible that it may happen again someday. We are totally dependent on rain and the inflow of water from our applicable Lee’s Summit water shed. In 2012, we had substantial flow through the natural rock formation that is called “The West Lake Spillway”. Keep in mind the word “Spillway” as the Spillway is a natural rock formation and not a man-made earthen Dam. I have seen in social media print things like “the dam has a leak”. If I didn’t know better, and I read that the dams had a leak, I would be afraid that this is a really bad thing, but that is not the case. The Lakewood Dams do not have a leak. So, for this very reason the LPOA Staff and Board are very transparent about the status of our two dams and we put the professional engineers report about the great condition of our dams on our website for all to view and learn from. The Association successfully reduced the flow out of the spillway during the drought approx. 12% of what its highest flow rate of 4500 gallons per minute. Additionally, the Association procured Marina Docks and Pleasure Docks of a design that would allow these structures to sit on ground without being deformed or destroyed like our previous docks. So, if you are tracking lake levels, the math is pretty easy. Every day during the warm summer months that we don’t have rain, the lake level drops between 3/4” and 7/8” depending on actual heat and actual water intake from irrigation systems. This means that if we don’t have rain for 30 days, the lake level will drop (30 x .75 ) 22.5 inches. If the ground is wet from prior rains, then 1” of rainfall will raise the lake 6”. If the ground is dry, some of the rain will soak into the ground and won’t “runoff” into the creeks that feed into the Lakewood area. But again, those of us who were here in 2012 remember when the remnants of hurricane Isaac filled up our drought-stricken lake, that was almost 12 feet below full pool, in one 24-hour period. It always works out and the Engineers that designed our lakes knew that back in 1971 and it still holds true today.

The Fairway Homes park project is underway—we’ve broken ground and are preparing the plot for concrete, including what will be a handicap accessible ramp up to the fully fenced in play area. Keep an eye out for progress images and updates as they come.

This will be my last “From the GM” in the Ripples Magazine. Going forward, Mr. Mark Krtek will be authoring this article. I humbly thank you for the privilege to communicate with you through this article over 168 times. I look forward to Mark now having that same privilege.

From the Boardroom

As a thriving lake community, one of our most valuable assets remains at the forefront of our minds…the lake. As we all know, this has been a warm summer with little to no measurable rain. The combination of little rain and warm temperatures results in a lake that is not at full pool. Many residents have lived here for many years and remember 2012 when the dam was losing water at a rate of 4,000 gallons per minute, which was concerning to us all. The dam was subsequently repaired and is now performing as it should. If you are interested in taking a deeper dive into the health of the dam, each annual report is available online under the Transparency tab > Dam Spillway.

Work on the next phase of the ENVISION Lakewood Strategic Plan is moving forward. Last week, the Board, Staff, and standing Advisory Committees came together to review the plan, gather valuable input and discuss next steps for implementation.

As a thriving lake community, one of our most valuable assets remains at the forefront of our minds…the lake.

We're excited to continue sharing updates with the community as this important work progresses- stay tuned.

This collaborative session marked a new and exciting approach for the LPOA - one that puts shared vision and strategy into action. It's a meaningful opportunity for all of us to help shape the future of Lakewood in a thoughtful, united way. We're excited to continue sharing updates with the community as this important work progresses- stay tuned.

One of the most often asked questions is, “where is the water going”? Unfortunately, evaporation is how we lose most of our water. At 80 degrees, the lake loses approximately 1/2 inch per day if the lake is calm, add wind and the evaporation rate increases. Hopefully we can get some much-needed precipitation soon and get back to full pool in the near future.

As we plan for the future, let’s not forget to make the most of the present. Summer may be winding down, but there’s still time for one more great memory—join us for Concert on the Rock, hosted by the Activities Committee, on August 16th from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. You won’t want to miss it!

LAKEWOOD ARTISTS SERIES AUGUST ART EXHIBIT

A place to present artists of all mediums

The Argyle Art Gallery summer exhibit invites you to experience three different artistic mediums, each offering its own unique method of expression. Whether through the broad strokes of painting, the intricate textures of fused glass, or the depth of photography, this exhibit offers the limitless possibilities of creativity.

Susie Freeland was drawn to decorative glass long before she began creating hundreds of her own unique works in fused glass. Twenty years ago, Susie began to experiment in stained glass. Working with glass became a passion and soon she was learning new techniques to create fused glass. In her Lakewood studio, Susie has created a space for works in progress, a room for kilns, and a room with a large display of her rainbow colored glass art. Entering her studio is like falling into a kaleidoscope. The process of making fused glass is very technical and can take days to become the object she envisions. Susie starts with a base piece of square or round glass, and then adds layers of more glass pieces in various shapes and colors. As she moves the pieces around, working in new colors, adding crushed or powdered glass features, the new project reveals its own shape and purpose. Susie usually has 8-10 pieces in the process of being created, molded, fused in the kilns, or annealing (resting). She continues to learn new techniques taking classes in Arizona during the winter months and collecting books of “recipes” for new projects. She belongs to an artist group in AZ, as well as Summit Art, and a small group called “Glassy Gals,” who discuss their latest projects and inspire each other. Susie currently has work on display and for sale at the Buttonwood Art Space in Kansas City, two galleries in Phoenix, and Powell Gardens.

Rick Scaletty

Rick Scaletty and his wife, Kathy, are both accomplished artists of different mediums. They travel much of the year, always finding beautiful places to feed their creativity. This past year, it was Colorado in the summer, Italy in the fall, and Tucson for the winter. Rick still dives when he can for extraordinary underwater photos, and continues to craft beautiful jewelry in his spare time. In this exhibit, Rick will be showing some of his favorite underwater photos over the years. More of his colorful work can be seen on his website, rickscaletty.zenfolio.com.

Kathy Scaletty

Kathy Scaletty has recently been experimenting with watercolors and learning to paint with pastels. During the winter months in Arizona, she expanded her skills in the new techniques with classes from some amazing artists: Mary-Ann Murphy from Canada; Susi Havens-Bezaire from Ohio; and Susan Morrison, from the Sedona Desert Museum. Kathy enjoys painting flowers and landscapes using photo references from their trips and also painting in plein aire. The couple’s travels offer many opportunities for each to use their talents in creative ways. When Kathy and Rick are at home in Lakewood, they spend as much time as possible with their grandsons.
