1. Prepare students to sit for the Certified Medical Billing Specialist® (CMBS™) examination and other industry certifications and achieve a minimum passing score of 75%.

2. Provide ongoing continuing education to certified billers, which they can apply toward certification maintenance requirements To accomplish its goals and objectives, MAB Institute seeks to achieve a balance among instructional development, teaching, and service, believing that an emphasis on teaching and instructional development will inspire and encourage students to share their skills and knowledge in service to health care providers and patients in need of medical billing services and assistance.

The Medical Association of Billers and MAB Institute also work to provide leadership in partnership with medical communities throughout the country and participate in efforts to create and promote relevant standards and develop relationships with organizations pursuing similar goals.

MAB Institute’s course offerings are consistent with and supportive of its mission and purpose.

Instructional materials and technology methods meet stated goals and objectives by offering current and accessible information provided through courses that is relevant to medical billing professionals.

History Initially founded in 1995, the Medical Association of Billers (MAB) was a training and certification association for medical billing and coding based in Las Vegas, Nevada. The MAB curriculum was approved and licensed by the Commission for Post Secondary Education in Nevada.

On November 1, 2017, MAB acquired new ownership, who moved the business to Mount Jackson, Virginia and decided to separate out the training programs from the membership and certification activities. Thus, MAB Institute was created to focus on the educational aspects of medical billing. On June 20, 2019, SCHEV certified MAB Institute to operate in Virginia.

Facilities and Equipment MAB Institute’s courses are offered via online format using a learning management system platform. Students require access to a computer and an Internet connection to participate in these courses. Some online courses are self-paced and include interactive lessons and feedback, a virtual classroom community, opportunity to connect with other students in the course, ability to participate in group discussions, and additional access to the course instructor via email, chat, phone, and/or video. Synchronous courses also require the student to have a computer with audiovisual (camera, microphone) capabilities.

In-person courses are short (e.g., two to five days) courses that provide an intensive training format with lectures and group and individual classroom activities. These courses are typically held at MAB Institute’s facility or at conference centers or hotels to accommodate students in different regions.

Library MAB Institute offers an online library to assist students with their learning and course activities. The library provides readily available access to current information, data, and resources in the form of hyperlinks to instructional materials, supplemental information, industry news, and resources that support and enrich the student’s learning experience.

Programs As a career technical institution, MAB Institute offers career technical certificate programs and courses to prepare students for employment or to enhance their employment skills and support lifelong learning. The programs are designed to meet demand for medical billers and normally require a few months or less to complete. Students may access employment outlook data for medical billing at: US Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook (https://www.bls.gov/ooh) and Virginia Job Outlook (https://www.vec.virginia.gov/sites/default/files/documents/2024-Jobs-Outlook.pdf).

MAB Institute offers a Certificate of Completion for the following programs: •

Medical Insurance Specialist / Biller / Receptionist - PowerTraining (16 hours) (synchronous online or in-person)

Medical Reimbursement for the Market Analyst (40 hours) (synchronous online or inperson)

Medical Reimbursement for the Hospice Biller (6 hours) (online)

Online self-paced courses are offered continuously. Synchronous (live, instructor-led, interactive) online courses are offered periodically throughout the year, depending on demand. Generally, the PowerTraining program is offered synchronously four times per year and the Medical Reimbursement for the Market Analyst program is offered at least twice per year. There are options for daytime or evening sessions for these programs. The PowerTraining and Medical Reimbursement for the Market Analyst training programs are also periodically offered in-person at MAB Institute’s facility in Broadway, Virginia, depending on demand.

Hours of Operation MAB Institute is open Monday through Thursday from 9am to 4pm Eastern via email and telephone. Office hours are by appointment only.

Instructors are available at times established by the instructor for each course and are communicated to the student at the beginning of the course.

Student Right-to-Know and Campus Security Act The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (known as the Clery Act) is a federal statute. It was introduced in the Senate as the “Student Athlete Rightto-Know Act" and passed the House as the “Student Right-to-Know and Campus Security Act.” President George H. W. Bush signed the legislation into law on November 8, 1990. It requires all colleges and universities that participate in federal financial aid programs to keep and disclose information about crime on and near their respective campuses.

The federal student aid programs are authorized under Title IV of the Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965, as amended, and include federal grants, loans, and work-study programs. MAB Institute does not participate in any program under HEA Title IV.

Admissions and Entrance Requirements MAB Institute has no minimum requirements for admission but strongly recommends that students have a high school diploma or GED because that will improve their employment prospects and is often required for employment. MAB Institute recommends experience or training for any intermediate or higher-level courses. MAB Institute does not accept any transfer credits or grant credit for work experience. Certificates, courses, and credits earned at MAB Institute are transferable to another institution at the sole discretion of the accepting institution.

Students may register online through the web portal at any time. By registering, each student is making a voluntary decision to participate in MAB Institute’s community and to abide by MAB Institute’s policies, rules, and regulations. Students are notified via email confirmation of their registration.

MAB Institute does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, color, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, veteran status, political affiliation, genetics, or disability.

MAB Institute reserves the right to evaluate and document special cases and to refuse or revoke a student’s registration if MAB Institute determines that the student poses a threat, potential danger, or significant disruption to the community.

Student Disclosure Information Grading and Academic Performance Each student’s performance in MAB Institute’s courses is reported by a numeric grade of 0% to 100%, which the instructor is responsible for assigning. Grades of 75% or better are passing grades.

Students receive grade reports via the learning management system platform after each graded lesson in the course and at the end of the course.

MAB Institute does not incorporate academic probation or dismiss students for unsatisfactory performance. Students struggling to meet the 75% threshold during a course are invited to seek one-on-one assistance from the instructor, to participate in group sessions with the instructor, and/or to perform extra credit questions. Students are eligible to repeat a course; however, this is limited to two attempts in a one-year time period.

The PowerTraining course is not graded and is considered pass/fail. Students who attend the entire session receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course.

Student Rights, Privileges, and Responsibilities Students have rights and privileges, including, but not limited to: 1. Pursue training and education through the MAB Institute free from discrimination based upon sex, race, color, cultural background, national origin, religion, political creed, marital status, veteran status, actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, disability or age.

2. Fair and impartial academic evaluation.

3. Be free from involuntary disclosure of private information that instructors or administrators acquire in the course of their work, such as information regarding their gender identity, sexual orientation, health information, personal views, beliefs, and political associations.

4. Have MAB Institute maintain and protect the private status of all educational records except as directed by appropriate legal authority.

5. Contribute to formulating and evaluating MAB Institute policies.

8. An environment conducive to intellectual freedom, and a training environment characterized by safety and order.

9. A fair grievance process, as described in the Grievance Policy.

Each student has the responsibility: 1. To act in a manner that does not infringe upon the rights or property of others.

2. To maintain an atmosphere that promotes respect for learning and human dignity.

3. To know and comply with MAB Institute policies and applicable laws.

4. To facilitate the learning environment and the process of learning, including attending courses as scheduled, completing course assignments, and preparing for class.

5. To recognize that student actions reflect upon the individuals involved as well as upon MAB Institute.

6. To recognize MAB Institute’s obligation to provide an environment conducive for learning and academic inquiry, whether online or in a classroom setting.

7. To uphold and maintain academic and professional honesty and integrity and to adhere to the academic requirements determined by individual instructors.

8. To serve as a responsive bystander, reporting safety concerns.

Grievance Policy If students or applicants feel they have been unfairly treated, they may appeal any policy, procedure, or treatment by following these steps: Step 1:

Discuss the issue with the instructor involved.

Step 2:

If it is not resolved to the student’s satisfaction, discuss the issue with an MAB Institute Student Specialist.

Step 3:

If it is not resolved to the student's satisfaction, the student may file a written appeal with the Academic Director, who will respond in writing within three (3) business days.

Step 4:

If the grievance cannot be resolved at the local level, the student may contact SCHEV staff to file a complaint as a last resort: http://www.schev.edu/index/students-and-parents/resources/studentcomplaints).

Students will not be subjected to adverse actions by any MAB Institute officials as a result of initiating a complaint.

Student Records MAB Institute retains registration and course performance information during enrollment and after a student is no longer enrolled. Specifically, MAB Institute maintains:

1. Each student’s registration and documentation submitted as part of the registration process for at least three years after the student’s last date of attendance.

2. Each student’s transcript of academic or course work permanently in an electronic database with backup.

3. Each student’s academic or course progress, to include programs of student, dates of enrollment, courses taken and completed, grades, and current status permanently in an electronic database with backup.

4. Each student’s financial transactions, to include payments to the student’s account and refunds for at least three years after the student’s last date of attendance.

MAB Institute will not issue transcripts, certificates, or financial history to students until they have settled all their financial obligations to MAB Institute and are in good financial standing. MAB Institute provides records only to the student (not to third parties) who must provide MAB Institute with a written, signed, and dated request.

Student Conduct MAB Institute expects all students to respect the rights of others and to conduct themselves in a professional manner, whether participating in online or in-person courses.

MAB Institute fosters an academic community that is committed to the educational and personal growth of each student and reserves the right to dismiss any student whose conduct conflicts with the best interests of the Institute or violates its rules and regulations. Examples of behavior patterns that are not in harmony with the educational goals of MAB Institute include: 1. Academic or administrative dishonesty, such as cheating, plagiarizing, or knowingly furnishing false information to MAB Institute.

2. Forgery, alteration, misuse, or mutilation of MAB Institute documents, records, identifications, educational material, and/or property.

3. Obstruction or disruption of teaching, research, administration, or disciplinary procedures.

4. Physical or verbal abuse of any MAB Institute official or other student or conduct that threatens or endangers the health or safety of any such person, including cyber bullying.

MAB Institute reserves the right to refuse or revoke a student’s registration if MAB Institute determines that the student poses a threat, potential danger, or significant disruption to the community and will provide the student with a written explanation of registration revocation and dismissal.

When a student violates the standard of conduct, MAB Institute will follow these steps to correct unsatisfactory conduct: Step 1:

Instructor to discuss the issue with the student involved.

Step 2:

If unsatisfactory conduct continues, the MAB Institute Student Specialist to discuss the issue with the student.

Step 3:

If unsatisfactory conduct continues, the Academic Director will provide written notice of registration revocation and dismissal to the student.

In the case of registration revocation and dismissal, a student will not be permitted to re-register until such time that the student is able to demonstrate to the Academic Director through written request and a meeting that the unsatisfactory conduct has been remedied and will not occur again. Readmittance is at the sole discretion of the Academic Director.

A student may refer to the Grievance Policy should s/he wish to appeal.

Attendance For online courses and programs that are self-paced, students are expected to complete each course within ninety (90) days of registration. Any group interactions with other students taking the course and/or with the course instructor are voluntary. If a student requests a one-on-one meeting with the course instructor, the student is expected to attend the meeting on time or to provide a cancellation or rescheduling notice to the instructor prior to the meeting. If a student requests an instructor meeting and is a no-show more than once, the instructor may choose to schedule future meeting requests at his/her discretion.

If the student has not completed a course within 90 days of registration, the instructor will discuss the reasons for the delay and grant an extension at the instructor’s discretion. If the instructor does not grant an extension, MAB Institute will withdraw a student from a course fourteen (14) calendar days after the end of the 90-day period and issue any refund based on the Refund Policy.

MAB Institute expects students to be present and punctual for all scheduled synchronous online and in-person courses. Instructors do not have to admit students who arrive more than fifteen (15) minutes late to in-person courses unless previously discussed and arranged with the instructor. If the instructor denies the tardy student admission, students may be withdrawn from the course.

Students who are withdrawn from an in-person course due to unsatisfactory attendance are not eligible for refund.

A student may take a leave of absence from any program and then resume at a later date upon arrangement with the instructor.

Tuition, Fees, and Refunds For MAB Institute’s online courses, students are responsible for having computer and Internet access.

Additionally, depending upon the course, students may be responsible for acquiring current versions of industry coding manuals (i.e., CPT®, ICD-10-CM, and/or HCPCS), which is estimated at $300 for all three.

Tuition MAB Institute tuition is paid per course and is based on the clock hours associated with each course. Please refer to the Program Curriculum for current tuition rates.

Refund Policy Tuition for all programs and courses includes a 15% (up to $100) nonrefundable fee. Refunds are processed within one week of written notice of cancellation or withdrawal.

A registrant rejected by MAB Institute is entitled to a refund of all monies paid.

Three-Day Cancellation: A registrant who provides written notice of cancellation within three (3) business days, excluding weekend and holidays, of executing the Enrollment Agreement is entitled to a refund of all monies paid less 15% (up to $100).

Other Cancellations: A registrant requesting cancellation more than three (3) days after executing the Enrollment Agreement and making an initial payment but prior to the first day of class is entitled to a refund of all monies paid less 15% (up to $100).

NOTE: The percentage of the program completed is determined by comparing the number of completed lesson assignments received to the total number of lesson assignments required in the program.

A student choosing to withdraw from a course or program after commencement of classes must provide a written notice to the Academic Director that includes the last date of attendance and is signed and dated by the student.

If special circumstances arise, the student may request an extension from the instructor in writing that includes the requested extension date and is signed and dated by the student. If the student fails to meet the extension date, the withdraw date will be the extension date.

If the student has not completed a course within 90 days of registration, the instructor will discuss the reasons for the delay and grant an extension at the instructor’s discretion. If the instructor does not grant an extension, MAB Institute will withdraw a student from a course fourteen (14) calendar days after the end of the 90-day period.

MAB Institute reserves the right to cancel any synchronous online or in-person training if the number of students falls below the minimum required, in which case registrants are entitle to a refund of all monies paid.

MAB Institute does not have financial assistance available to students and does not participate in the federal student aid program.

MAB Institute requires payment in full prior to course commencement. MAB Institute will only release final grades, certificates, or transcripts to students who are in good financial standing.

Program Curriculum Program Evaluation MAB Institute’s mission of fostering excellence in medical billing and coding means that it must ensure that students receive relevant education to excel in the medical billing workplace.

Students should expect to complete a course evaluation upon completion of each course and before receiving their final grade. MAB Institute uses this feedback and information along with data from the online course platform to periodically evaluate programs and implement changes and modifications to improve the program’s success and relevance.

Faculty Accessibility MAB Institute faculty are accessible to students through online portal tools within the virtual classroom community and via email, chat, phone, and/or video.

Students may also communicate with each other in this manner. Instructors establish their own hours and schedules and communicate that to students at the beginning of the course. Within these times, students should expect a response within two (2) hours. Outside these times, students should expect a response within two (2) hours of the next regularly scheduled office hours. For all other services, MAB Institute is open Monday through Thursday from 9am to 4pm Eastern via email and telephone. Office hours are by appointment only.

Certificate of Completion Requirements Grades of 75% or better are passing grades. Students must achieve 75% or better for each course in a program to attain a certificate of completion, except for PowerTraining, which is pass/fail.

Career Advising and Placement Services MAB Institute does not offer job placement services but does post job openings of which it become aware. MAB Institute offers career advising to discuss the student’s goals and aspirations and the extent to which course offerings at MAB Institute may contribute toward meeting those goals.

Distance Education MAB Institute offers online courses that can be achieved through distance learning. Course objectives are included in program and course descriptions in this School Catalog.

Distance learning courses are available online and are designed to meet the stated objectives of the program or course. Online courses are offered through a Learning Management System (LMS) that handles the management and delivery of eLearning courses.

The instructor has various technology methods to interact with the student, organize tests, arrange conference sessions as needed, and grade coursework. The instructor can access, track and monitor the learner’s progress, and provide guidance and assistance at any time. The platform features the ability to organize and hold e-conference sessions; online whiteboard functionality so

instructors and students can create and share writing and drawings in real time; the ability to use the LMS with mobile devices (smartphones and tablets), including being able to study when offline. The online Learning Management System (LMS) platform has a user-friendly interface that offers the same experience across all devices, including desktops, tablets, and mobile devices.

Notice of Minimum Technology Specification for Students and Faculty: The minimum technology requirements for MAB Institute’s online courses is a device capable of Internet access, a web browser (i.e., Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge), and an Internet connection higher than dial-up service. For synchronous online courses, the student must have a computer with audiovisual (microphone and camera) capabilities.

Training and Support Services: MAB Institute provides training and support services specifically related to telecommunication activities. An introductory navigation training video is provided to each new faculty member and student to introduce the LMS platform and how to navigate through the virtual classroom. Faculty and students may contact MAB Institute at any time during business hours for additional training and support. Additionally, support services for the LMS platform are available through the vendor Monday through Thursday from 11:00AM to 5PM EST. Methods for Timely Interaction Between Students and Faculty: MAB Institute faculty are accessible to students through online portal tools within the virtual classroom community and via email, chat, phone, and/or video. Instructors establish their own hours and schedules and communicate that to students at the beginning of the course. Within these times, students should expect a response within two (2) hours. Standards for Sufficient Background, Knowledge, and Technical Skills to Successfully Undertake a Distance Learning Program: MAB Institute has developed the following standards to ensure that students have sufficient background, knowledge, and technical skills to successfully undertake a distance learning program: •

Computer Literacy: Students must have a basic knowledge of computer and Internet skills to be successful in an online course. This includes: knowledge of basic terminology (e.g., browser, router); understanding of basic computer hardware and software and ability to perform computer operations (i.e., using keyboard and mouse, managing files and folders (save, name, copy, move, backup, rename, delete, check properties), software installation including security and virus protection, using software applications (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, email clients), knowledge of copying and pasting, spell-checking, saving files in different formats, sending and downloading attachments); Internet skills (i.e., connecting, accessing, using browsers) and ability to perform online research using various search engines and resources included in the library; and ability to use online communication tools, such as email (create, send, receive, reply, print, send/receive attachments), discussion boards (read, search, post, reply, follow threads), chats, and messengers.

Strong Reading and Writing Skills: Students must have strong reading skills and be able to communicate effectively through writing. Most of the material in the online environment will come from online presentations, written lectures, and other online documentation; therefore, strong reading and critical thinking skills are important for success in an online course. Because online students communicate mainly through text-based tools (e.g., emails, discussion forums, chats, and instant messaging), students should be comfortable with writing.

Self-Motivated, Independent, and Active Learner: Online courses require more selfdiscipline and independence than on-campus courses, which some students may find not suitable for their learning style. Students must be able to start and to work on tasks independently and must be self-disciplined to follow the class schedule and meet deadlines. Because the instructor cannot see students, students must reach out to the instructor immediately if they have problems or questions. Students can post questions and comments in the discussion forum or contact the instructor directly. If a student encounters technical difficulty, problems understanding course content, or difficulty meeting deadlines, s/he should seek help right away and contact the instructor.

Time Commitment: Online classes take as much time as regular on-campus classes.

Students must set aside sufficient time for study and plan to spend at least as much time working on the assignments and studying as with a traditional course. Powers, Duties and Responsibilities Policy Governing Board and Owners MAB Institute LLC was organized with the Virginia State Corporation Commission on May 8, 2018 to focus on the educational aspects of medical billing. On June 20, 2019, SCHEV certified MAB Institute to operate in Virginia.

Nancy Young is the sole owner of MAB Institute and is responsible for all governing administrative duties. The Student Specialist is responsible for student administration, including student interactions and support. Together they comprise MAB Institute’s governing board. Faculty, trainers, and students are invited to offer input to MAB Institute’s academic programs and institutional planning activities.

MAB Institute’s governing board has the power and responsibility to act effectively and ethically in its duties related to overseeing MAB Institute’s mission, financial integrity, administrative responsibilities including record maintenance of all official meetings, educational excellence, recruiting, and evaluation process. The governing board accomplishes these tasks while maintaining a strategic focus on the future of MAB Institute.

President Nancy Young serves as the President and is responsible for all executive administrative duties, including budgeting and resource management. She has a unique mix of entrepreneurial business background and nonprofit experience. As with all small organizations (private and nonprofit), there is a need to wear many hats, which has offered her opportunities to gain exposure to all facets of a business, to test her resourcefulness, and to accomplish tasks successfully and on time and within budget.

Principal Administrators Nancy Young, MA, CMBS-I, serves as Academic Director and is responsible for developing educational processes and policies to meet curriculum goals, developing and implementing faculty development programs, and recruiting and training faculty. She has worked in the field of medical reimbursement since 1993, including research and internal and external education. She holds a BA in medical sociology and MA in health information management (summa cum laude).

She also holds certificates in HIPAA Awareness and HIPAA Security and is a Certified Medical Billing Specialist – Instructor and a Market Access Reimbursement Analyst.

Applying Outcomes After annually reviewing and evaluating program consistency with mission, program success and relevance, and educational goals, the Governing Board reviews the documented report to assess school and program effectiveness and the extent to which the educational goals are being achieved. The Governing Board uses these results to make modifications to MAB Institute’s programs, which may include adding new programs, removing unsuccessful program, or modifying existing programs to better align with mission, success, relevance, and goals.

Telecommunications and Distance Education Policy Overview MAB Institute has developed its distance learning program based on Virginia requirements, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS COC) Guidelines for Addressing Distance and Correspondence Education (last revised December 2011), the SACS COC Distance and Correspondence Education Policy Statement (last revised August 2018), and other schools’ policies.

All programs MAB Institute offers via telecommunications or distance education are to be comparable in content, faculty, and resources to those offered in residence and must include regular student-faculty interaction by computer, telephone, mail, or face-to-face meetings.

Telecommunication programs and courses shall adhere to the following minimum standards: •

The educational objectives for each program or course shall be clearly defined, simply stated, and of such a nature that they can be achieved through telecommunications.

MAB Institute only offers online courses that can be achieved through distance learning. Course objectives are included in program and course descriptions in the School Catalog.

MAB Institute’s primary delivery method of training and education is via telecommunication. All distance learning courses are available online and are designed to meet the stated objectives of the program or course. Online courses are offered through a Learning Management System (LMS) that handles the management and delivery of eLearning courses. Instructional materials and technology methods may vary depending upon the course objectives, and may include presentations or videos, learning paths that restrict the way a course can be completed or course content can be viewed, a file repository to organize, reuse, and share files with selected students, blended learning (a mix of eLearning with instructorled training), videoconferencing, gamification (badges, points, levels, rewards, and leaderboards), personal messages, calendar, and discussion forums. All these elements are appropriate to meet the stated objectives of all of MAB Institute’s online courses and may be used in all courses.

All policies and procedures, rights and responsibilities, and expectations follow and adhere to the MAB Institute School Plan & Policies and those outlined in the MAB Institute School Catalog.

Description of the Online Platform MAB Institute shall implement basic online navigation of any course or program. The online Learning Management System (LMS) platform has a user-friendly interface that offers the same experience across all devices, including desktops, tables, and mobile devices. The technology infrastructure capabilities are sufficient to meet the demands of the programs being offered. The LMS platform has a user interface with a responsive design that fits any device and has scalable visual elements that are retina screen ready. It conforms to WCAG-2 accessibility requirements, has native applications for iOS and Android devices, is built on top of most modern web standards and technologies. The LMS platform is scalable based on a program’s needs and enrollment.

Reporting capabilities include dashboards and custom reports with drill-down capabilities that can be scheduled and delivered via email or on-demand. Learning environments can be segmented to create separate nodes for programs. Custom user-types determine the level of

access users have to a program or course. Assessment tools, such as tests, evaluate what students learn and support multiple question types and a variety of test characteristics.

The instructor has various technology methods to interact with the student, organize tests, arrange conference sessions as needed, and grade coursework. The instructor can access, track and monitor the learner’s progress and provide guidance and assistance at any time. The platform features the ability to organize and hold e-conference sessions; online whiteboard functionality so instructors and students can create and share writing and drawings in real time; the ability to use the LMS with mobile devices (smartphones and tablets), including being able to study when offline; and the ability to integrate and exchange data through eLearning standards such as SCORM and Tin-Can. All instructors will receive initial training in the use and management of the LMS, and have on-going training as needed as questions or issues might arise.

Courses and users are unlimited. These capabilities are sufficient to meet the demands of MAB Institute’s offered programs and courses.

Policy Guidelines Regarding Attendance, Assignment Submission, Passing Grades, and Plagiarism Attendance and Assignment Submission: Asynchronous online courses and programs are selfpaced, but students are expected to complete each course within ninety (90) days of registration. Any group interactions with other students taking the course and/or with the course instructor are voluntary. If a student requests a one-on-one meeting with the course instructor, the student is expected to attend the meeting on time or to provide a cancellation or rescheduling notice to the instructor prior to the meeting. If a student requests an instructor meeting and is a no-show more than once, the instructor may choose to schedule future meeting requests at his/her discretion.

If the student has not completed a course within 90 days of registration, the instructor will discuss the reasons for the delay and grant an extension at the instructor’s discretion. If the instructor does not grant an extension, MAB Institute will withdraw a student from a course fourteen (14) calendar days after the end of the 90-day period and issue any refund based on the Refund Policy.

MAB Institute expects students to be present and punctual for all scheduled synchronous online and in-person courses. Instructors do not have to admit students who arrive more than fifteen (15) minutes late to in-person courses unless previously discussed and arranged with the instructor. If the instructor denies the tardy student admission, students may be withdrawn from the course. Students who are withdrawn from an in-person course due to unsatisfactory attendance are not eligible for refund.

A student may take a leave of absence from any program and then resume courses at a later date.

All assignments are submitted through the LMS platform, either as an assignment directly within the program or as an uploaded file attachment.

Passing Grades: Each student’s performance in MAB Institute’s courses is reported by a numeric grade of 0% to 100%, which the instructor is responsible for assigning. Grades of 75% or better are passing grades. Students receive grade reports via the learning management system platform after each graded lesson in the course and at the end of the course.

MAB Institute does not incorporate academic probation or dismiss students for unsatisfactory performance. Students struggling to meet the 75% threshold during a course are invited to seek one-on-one assistance from the instructor, to participate in group sessions with the instructor, and/or to perform extra credit questions. Students are eligible to repeat a course; however, this is limited to two attempts in a one-year time period.

The PowerTraining course is not graded and is considered pass/fail. Students who attend the entire session receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course.

Plagiarism: MAB Institute fosters an academic community that is committed to the educational and personal growth of each student and reserves the right to dismiss any student whose conduct conflicts with the best interests of the Institute or violates its rules and regulations. Examples of behavior patterns that are not in harmony with the educational goals of MAB Institute include academic or administrative dishonesty, such as cheating, plagiarizing, or knowingly furnishing false information to MAB Institute.

Rules to Ensure Regular Student-Faculty Interaction by Computer, Telephone, Mail, or Face-to-Face Meetings MAB institute provides for methods for timely interaction between students and faculty. MAB Institute faculty are accessible daily to students through online portal tools within the virtual classroom community and via email, chat, phone, and/or video. Instructors establish their own hours and schedules and communicate that to students at the beginning of the course. Within these times, students should expect a response within two (2) hours. Outside these times, students should expect a response within two (2) hours of the next regularly scheduled office hours. MAB Institute is open Monday through Thursday from 9am to 4pm Eastern via email and telephone.

Office hours are by appointment only. In addition, students and instructors have the opportunity to interact through the LMS portal through instructor-led training, videoconferencing, and personal messages.

Instructors will contact students at least once each week during the course(s) to monitor progress, answer questions, and provide support as needed and requested. Contacts will be documented in the student’s record.

Description of Training and Support Services Specific to Distance Education MAB Institute utilizes learning management software (LMS) to navigate its programs and courses online. The LMS platform has a user-friendly interface that offers the same experience across all devices, including desktops, tablets, and mobile devices.

It is MAB Institute’s policy that all information exchanged through its distance learning courses goes through the online learning portal to protect information exchange privacy and safety and to standardize the technology and associated training and support related to the technology.

The minimum technology requirements for MAB Institute’s online courses is a device capable of Internet access, a web browser (i.e., Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge), and an Internet connection higher than dial-up service.

MAB institute provides faculty and student training and support services specifically related to distance education. An introductory navigation training video is provided to each new faculty member and student to introduce the LMS platform and how to navigate through the virtual classroom. Faculty and students may contact MAB Institute at any time during business hours for additional training and support. Additionally, support services for the LMS platform are available through the vendor Monday through Thursday from 11:00AM to 5PM EST.

Means to Ensure Students Have Sufficient Background, Knowledge, and Technical Skills to Successfully Undertake a Distance Learning Program MAB Institute has developed the following standards to ensure that students have sufficient background, knowledge, and technical skills to successfully undertake a distance learning program. To ensure students meet these criteria, each student is to acknowledge via initials on the Enrollment Agreement that: I have read and understand the Telecommunications and Distance Education Policy and attest that I have the computer literacy, reading and writing skills, motivation, and time to help me succeed in distance learning.

Computer Literacy: Students must have a basic knowledge of computer and Internet skills to be successful in an online course. This includes: knowledge of basic terminology (e.g., browser, router); understanding of basic computer hardware and software and ability to perform computer operations (i.e., using keyboard and mouse, managing files and folders (save, name, copy, move, backup, rename, delete, check properties), software installation including security and virus protection, using software applications (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, email clients), knowledge of copying and pasting, spell-checking, saving files in different formats, sending and downloading attachments); Internet skills (i.e., connecting, accessing, using browsers) and ability to perform online research using various search engines and resources included in the library; and ability to use online communication tools, such as email (create, send, receive, reply, print, send/receive attachments), discussion boards (read, search, post, reply, follow threads), chats, and messengers.

Strong Reading and Writing Skills: Students must have strong reading skills and be able to communicate effectively through writing. Most of the material in the online environment will come from online presentations, written lectures, and other online documentation; therefore, strong reading and critical thinking skills are important for success in an online course. Because online students communicate mainly through text-based tools (e.g., emails, discussion forums, chats, and instant messaging), students should be comfortable with writing.

Self-Motivated, Independent, and Active Learner: Online courses require more self-discipline and independence than on-campus courses, which some students may find not suitable for their learning style. Students must be able to start and to work on tasks independently and must be self-disciplined to follow the class schedule and meet deadlines. Because the instructor cannot see students, students must reach out to the instructor immediately if they have problems or questions. Students can post questions and comments in the discussion forum or contact the instructor directly. If a student encounters technical difficulty, problems understanding course content, or difficulty meeting the deadline, s/he should seek help right away and contact the instructor.

Time Commitment: Online classes take as much time as regular on-campus classes. Students must set aside sufficient time for study and plan to spend at least as much time working on the assignments and studying as with a traditional course. The School Catalog includes the clock hours associated with each class. Students should set aside specific time on a regular basis to participate in the course and to study.

Compliance with Other State Approval Processes MAB Institute’s programs and courses are open to students from all states. For online students outside of the Commonwealth of Virginia, MAB Institute meets each state’s distance education requirements and associated approval processes to comply with any applicable regulations. To be subject to their regulations, most states require a physical presence and/or a degree program, which does not apply to MAB Institute. For example, the findings for New York, from which MAB Institute anticipates a significant number of students, indicate regulation only if MAB Institute has a physical presence in the state. MAB maintains a complete state-by-state listing it reviews quarterly for any changes or new requirements.

MAB Institute intends to comply with the requirements for each state for which it has an applicant.

If the requirements of a particular state are prohibitive, MAB Institute will not accept that applicant and notify the applicant accordingly.

MAB Institute tracks registrants’ states and reviews and manages state regulations that may have an impact on the delivery of distance learning courses, ensuring compliance with any required regulations within the resident state of each student.

Recruitment and Admissions Policy Minimum Requirements for Eligibility for Admission MAB Institute has no minimum requirements for admission but strongly recommends that students have a high school diploma or GED because that will improve their employment prospects and is often required for employment. MAB Institute recommends experience or training for any intermediate or higher-level courses.

Standards for Academic Credit or Course Completion Given for Experience MAB Institute does not provide academic credit for its certificate programs nor course completion for experience. MAB Institute awards certificates only upon successful completion of the courses or programs of study. Grades of 75% or better are passing grades. Students must achieve a 75% or better for each course in a program to attain a certificate of completion.

Criteria for Acceptance of Transfer Credit MAB Institute does not accept any transfer credits or grant credit for work experience. Credits earned at MAB Institute are transferable to another institution at the sole discretion of the accepting institution.

Criteria for Refunds of Tuition and Fees MAB Institute tuition is paid per course and is based on the clock hours associated with each course. Please refer to the Program Curriculum for current tuition rates.

Tuition for all programs and courses includes a 15% (up to $100) nonrefundable fee. Refunds are processed within one week of written notice of cancellation or withdrawal.

A registrant rejected by MAB Institute is entitled to a refund of all monies paid.

Three-Day Cancellation: A registrant who provides written notice of cancellation within three (3) business days, excluding weekend and holidays, of executing the Enrollment Agreement is entitled to a refund of all monies paid less 15% (up to $100).

Other Cancellations: A registrant requesting cancellation more than three (3) days after executing the Enrollment Agreement and making an initial payment but prior to the first day of class is entitled to a refund of all monies paid less 15% (up to $100).

NOTE: The percentage of the program completed is determined by comparing the number of completed lesson assignments received to the total number of lesson assignments required in the program.

A student choosing to withdraw from a course or program after commencement of classes must provide a written notice to the Academic Director that includes the last date of attendance and is signed and dated by the student.

If special circumstances arise, the student may request an extension from the instructor in writing that includes the requested extension date and is signed and dated by the student. If the student fails to meet the extension date, the withdraw date will be the extension date.

If the student has not completed a course within 90 days of registration, the instructor will discuss the reasons for the delay and grant an extension at the instructor’s discretion. If the instructor does not grant an extension, MAB Institute will withdraw a student from a course fourteen (14) calendar days after the end of the 90-day period.

MAB Institute reserves the right to cancel any PowerTraining or synchronous online course if the number of students falls below the minimum required, in which case registrants are entitle to a refund of all monies paid.

MAB Institute does not have financial assistance available to students and does not participate in the federal student aid program.

MAB Institute requires payment in full prior to course commencement. MAB Institute will only release final grades, certificates, or transcripts to students who are in good financial standing.

Students’ Rights, Privileges, and Responsibilities Students have rights and privileges, including, but not limited to: 1. Pursue training and education through the MAB Institute free from discrimination based upon sex, race, color, cultural background, national origin, religion, political creed, marital status, veteran status, actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, disability or age.

2. Fair and impartial academic evaluation.

3. Be free from involuntary disclosure of private information that instructors or administrators acquire in the course of their work, such as information regarding their gender identity, sexual orientation, health information, personal views, beliefs, and political associations.

4. Have MAB Institute maintain and protect the private status of all educational records except as directed by appropriate legal authority.

5. Contribute to formulating and evaluating MAB Institute policies.

8. An environment conducive to intellectual freedom, and a training environment characterized by safety and order.

9. A fair grievance process, as described in the Grievance Policy.

Library and Learning Resources Policy The medical billing field is continually evolving and changing, with updates provided quarterly or even monthly in some cases. In alignment with its distance learning model, MAB Institute offers an online library to assist its online students with their learning and course activities. The library is to provide readily available access to current information, data, and other resources in the form of hyperlinks to instructional materials, supplemental information, industry news, and other resources that support and enrich the student’s medical billing learning experience.

All faculty and instructors are to integrate the library into course content so that students have access to a collection that is sufficient in quality, level, diversity, and quantity to supplement learning and assist students in their development as medical billers.

Faculty and instructors, as qualified individuals, are to contribute toward content to be included in the library and be responsible for updating references and hyperlinks housed in the library. At least quarterly, faculty is to be responsible for verifying the accuracy of the references and hyperlinks used in their classes and for adding new resources (and deleting irrelevant ones) as appropriate.

Faculty and instructors review daily, weekly, and monthly information provided through professional organizations, such as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Medicare Administrative Contractors, Federal Register, Food and Drug Administration, and other entities to assess applicability to course content and the overall the medical billing field. As appropriate, this information is added (or updated) to the library resources.
