Letter from the Executive Director On behalf of our Governing Board of Directors and our staff, I’m grateful for the support of our 42,389 members. Through your membership the Mizzou Alumni Association endeavored to support Mizzou, connect alumni and preserve traditions.

Under the leadership of volunteer president, Sherri Gallick, D/D, MAA finalized it’s fourth long-range plan. In the following pages you can read the plan that sets the roadmap for the years ahead. Our volunteers and staff are excited to implement the plan.

Thank you to Sherri and our outstanding Governing Board for their time, talent and treasure.

Campus protests in the fall of 2015 were a challenge for Mizzou. It created new opportunities for alumni relations and communication. Alumni concern with campus activities caused record feedback.

More than 600 African-American alumni volunteered to reorganize the Black Alumni Network. The crisis was difficult for Mizzou and MAA but the lessons will make each better in the future.

MAA INTRODUCES NEW PRESIDENT On July 1, 2015, Sherri Gallick, BS ED ‘82, began her one-year term as Mizzou Alumni Association (MAA) president.

Sherri brings a wealth of leadership experience to the position as a longtime MAA volunteer, Governing Board member and Vice Mayor of the City of Lakeland, a suburb of Memphis. Get to know Sherri:

Q: What is your favorite Mizzou memory?

A: It is impossible for me to pick just one because Mizzou is such a dynamic place. I feel extremely blessed because Mizzou has been the conduit for many of my lifelong friendships. I am a huge sports fan and I have great memories from sporting events.

Attending the 1978 Liberty Bowl holds great memories. It was such a fun experience. One of my ZTA sorority sisters lived in Memphis and her family was gracious enough to let us stay with them.

I recall Beale Street, the Liberty Bowl stadium and the festivities. At that time, I never imagined that Memphis and the Mid-South would be my home someday.

Q: What made you volunteer for the MAA? A: I believe you should be generous with your time, talent and treasure. If you see a need and you 11

volunteerism and fundraising. We all possess unique talents, gifts and treasures. Often people are willing to help when asked. That is how I got involved. I want to make sure we reach out to alumni, students and friends of Mizzou so they know they are a valued part of the Mizzou family.

Q: Why should students, alumni and fans of Mizzou join the alumni association?

can help, you should. While living in Indianapolis, I attended the Mizzou vs. Ball State tailgate and football game. At the tailgate, someone from the MAA asked the group if anyone would be willing to help organize a local chapter. I had experience pioneering organizations but had just taken a new job and did not know how much free time I would have. However, the seed was planted. A year later, I jumped in with both feet by starting the Indianapolis chapter and later reigniting the Memphis Mid-South chapter.

Q: What are your top priorities as the MAA’s new president?

A: My priorities focus on service, relationships and mentoring. I want to continue the strong work of the leaders who served before me as we broaden the base of the MAA through engagement, 12

A: When you join the Mizzou Alumni Association, you are part of the Mizzou family! Your favorite colors are black and gold, you love tiger stripes and you still think of CoMo as home. As a member of the MAA you are truly part of something bigger than self because your time, talent and treasure support scholarships, top rated faculty grants, mentoring opportunities, networking events, diversity organizations, sports tailgates and so much more. The MAA is about building relationships and staying connected. It’s amazing how many conversations and friendships start with a simple “M-I-Z.” Q: What would you like to see as part of your legacy at Mizzou?

A: While it must be a priority to continue building the alumni base and brand inside the state of Missouri, I would love to broaden the alumni support out of state. I want to make sure all alumni feel connected and welcome at Mizzou.

SERVICE STARS From community gardens to clean streams, volunteers shine during MAA’s first annual Mizzou Day of Service.

Story by Larissa Babiak Mizzou alumni coming together in a shared one-day experience can make substantial impact on the local communities being served by the Mizzou Alumni Association.

The Mizzou Alumni Association celebrated its first annual Mizzou Day of Service on April 30, 2016.

The concept behind the Day of Service stemmed from the MAA’s support and recognition of the success of Mizzou Alternative Breaks (MAB) in promoting service by groups of students on trips throughout the U.S. over select weekends, Thanksgiving, winter and spring breaks. The MAA’s push for alumni to engage in various service projects led to a full day dedicated to community activities.

“We were very pleased with breadth and depth of service opportunities our alumni engaged in,” said Molly Richardson, MAA Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement. “Fifteen chapters and over 100 volunteers participated this year and we expect the event to be even larger next year.”

The MAA is proud of the first annual Day of Service volunteers.

Alumni, friends and family served as site leaders and participants.

After planning and recruiting members, alumni united around a common mission to improve aspects of their communities.

They found ways to give to chapter and university areas, enjoyed each others’ company and strengthened the outreach and scope of events completed in the name of Mizzou.

Nationwide, MAA chapters participated in the Day of Service by: Serving meals in the Ozark, MO and Phoenix, AZ. _________________ Working in local gardens in Houston, TX; Jackson, TN; and Nashville, TN. _________________ Organizing donations at rescue missions and shelters in South Oakland, CA; and Omaha, NE. _________________ Riversweep cleaning and beautifying in downtown Denver, CO. _________________ Habitat for Humanity activities in Dallas, TX. _________________ Humane Society volunteering in San Antonio, TX.

Leader and in 2015, was named President Pro Tem of the Senate.

Currently, he is active in the Joplin Chamber of Commerce, Farm Bureau and the Knights of Columbus. Senator Richard is an alum from Missouri Southern State University and also has full duties within the C&N Bowl Corporation.

MAA PRESENTS 2015 GEYER AWARDS On February 2, 2016 at Revel in Jefferson City, the Henry S. Geyer Award was presented to Missouri Senator Ron Richard (pictured second from left) and Warren K. Erdman (second from right).

Since 1992, the Mizzou Alumni Association’s Legislative Network (MLN) presents the award to one public state official and one private citizen each year who are strong examples of Geyer’s values and advocates of higher education and Mizzou.

As a state representative, Geyer introduced a bill that established the University of Missouri in February of 1839.

MLN Chair Lesa McCartney and MU Interim Chancellor Hank Foley led the presentation, with closing remarks by MAA Executive Director Todd McCubbin. “This year’s recipients are great examples of what it means to advocate for higher education in our state,” said McCartney before presenting the awards.

Senator Richard represents the 32rd Senatorial District in the Missouri State Senate, which includes Dade, Newton and Jasper counties. He began his involvement in the state legislature in 2002 as a state representative. He later became Speaker of the House, Majority

Erdman is the executive vice president administration and corporate affairs for Kansas City Southern, a transportation holding company. He is responsible for the company’s U.S. legal department, claims, real estate, development, management of facilities and railroad security and environmental functions, in addition to regulatory affairs such as relations with government, communications and community outreach. In the past, he has served for various Missouri state governors. He is the member of the University of Missouri, Kansas City Trustees as the real estate committee chairman, the vice-chairman of the Westminster College, Fulton, Missouri Board of Trustees and currently serves on the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce on the executive committee and board of directors, the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Association of American Railroads, among others.

In October 2015, one member of the Twitter group noticed a welcome-home banner on campus featuring images of only white alumni, Harrison says.

“Somebody remarked that the banner wasn’t very inclusive,” and talks were started with the association about reinvigorating the black alumni affinity group.

Kansas City members of the newly revived Black Alumni Network meet at a local restaurant.

After connecting on Twitter, the Mizzou alumni group put out a call for membership last fall and garnered more than 1,000 responses in 24 hours.

LAUNCHING THE BLACK ALUMNI NETWORK Grassroots effort reinvigorates Tigers nationwide Story by Dale Smith Photos by Sally Marrow Published Jan. 29, 2016 In the wake of recent MU student protests regarding race and other issues, a grassroots movement of alumni has revived, re-energized and renamed the sometimes-dormant black alumni organization, which has been part of the Mizzou Alumni Association since 1979.

But this new incarnation, the

Mizzou Black Alumni Network, or MBAN, had its beginnings a year earlier, in Twitter conversations that included Erika Harrison, BA ’08, JD ’11, an equal opportunity services specialist at the˚ University of Houston. “A group of us who were friends on Twitter had all gone to MU at various times.

One of us said, ‘Why not have a black alumni group like at other universities?’ But we didn’t follow up.”

A few weeks later, as national news media were covering campus protests, the Twitter group members drafted a letter supporting the students and proposing to launch MBAN. The letter went out over social media and, “A thousand people signed on in 24 hours. We were like, whoa!” Harrison says. Now the Black Alumni Network is busy writing bylaws, choosing leaders and hosting kickoff events.

Another volunteer leader, Andrea Allison-Putman, BS BA ’85, treasurer of the association’s governing board and a member of the second of three generations of her family to attend Mizzou. As chief personnel officer for the YMCA in Kansas City, she has seen employers nationwide launch similar interest groups. “It’s a way to celebrate commonalities or help overcome obstacles,” she says, comparing the network to alumni affinity groups for veterans, women and former student-athletes. It’s not about being separate, she says.

“All these groups funnel into to the larger association, hopefully improve membership and get involved more broadly. If you want to be part of the solution,” she says, “you need to get involved.”
