Einleitung

Die diesjährigen Mastermodule der Fokusse Architektur & Struktur und Architektur & Energie finden in Kooperation mit dem Kompetenzzentrum Typologie & Planung (CCTP) des Instituts für Architektur statt und bauen auf verschiedene Hochhaus-Forschungsprojekte auf. Die Entwürfe von Wohn- und Hybridhochhäusern werden vor diesem Hintergrund entwickelt und wollen insbesondere durch Antworten auf folgende Fragestellungen zur Diskussion beitragen: - Wohn-/Hybridhochhaus als Verdichtungsinstrument: Wie können Wohnflächen optimiert werden und welche Kompensationsangebote sind dazu notwendig?

- Preiswertes Wohnen im Hochhaus: Wie können neue Wohnformen und kleinere Wohnungen durch einen Low-Tech-Ansatz bei Konstruktion, Technik und Ausstattung mit hohen Raum- und Lebensqualitäten im Hochhaus generiert werden?

- Wohn-/Hybridhochhaus als Vertikale Stadt: Wie entstehen aktive Nachbarschaftsbeziehungen in Hochhäusern und welche räumliche und typologischen Merkmale im Gebäude und seinem Umfeld sind für ein solches vertikale Quartier massgebend?

Das Mastermodul des Fokus Material wird mit dem Forschungsprojekt „The Culture of Water“ weiterfahren, dass im Herbstsemester 2018 in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT) gestartet wurde. Das Hauptziel der Studie ist die Erforschung der Architektur, der Lebens- und Landschaftsbedingungen um den Vierwaldstättersee und um den nordöstlich von Kyoto gelegenen Biwa-Sees, der grösste Süsswassersee Japans. Dies ist das zweite Semester eines Forschungsprojekts, das in den nächsten fünf Jahren laufen soll und einen facettenreichen Ansatz für die Analyse, Diskussion und Produktion von Architektur rund um die beiden Seen liefern soll.

Zusätzlich zu einem der Projektmodule sind fünf umfangreiche Module im Regelsemester entlang des Berufsbildes entwickelt, sie bedingen notwendige Vertiefungen in die eigentliche Materie und fragen verschiedene Kompetenzen zwischen fachlichen, methodischen und sozialen Fähigkeiten ab. Ein interdisziplinäres Lehrteam führt durch die unterschiedlichen Module.

Preface

This year’s master’s modules of the focuses Architecture & Structure and Architecture & Energy are offered in cooperation with the Competence Centre Typology & Planning in Architecture (CCTP) of the Architecture Institute and are based on various high-rise research projects. Researchers convey specific fundamental knowledge for the students’ semester project. The designs for residential and hybrid high-rises are developed against this backdrop and in particular seek to discuss answers to the following questions: - Residential/hybrid high-rise as instrument for increasing density: How can living space be optimised and what compensations are necessary to do so?

- Affordable housing in a high-rise: How can new forms of housing and smaller flats with high-quality space and housing qualities be generated in high-rises by means of a “low-tech” approach to construction, technology and furnishing?

- Residential/hybrid high-rise as vertical city: How are active relationships among neighbours established in high-rises and what spatial and typological features are crucial in the building and in its surroundings to achieve such a vertical neighbourhood?

The master’s module of the Focus Material will be continuing with the research project “The Culture of Water”, which began jointly with the Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT) in the autumn semester of 2018. The main goal is to study architectural, living and landscape conditions in the surroundings of Lake Lucerne and Lake Biwa. The latter is Japan‘s largest freshwater lake and lies northeast of Kyoto. It is the second semester for this research project, which is planned to run another five years. It targets a multifaceted approach to analysis, discussion and production of the architecture around both lakes.

In addition to one of the focus projects, five extensive modules during the regular semester are tailored to the needs of the architectural profession; they require more intensive work on specific topics and call for the application of knowledge, methodological and social skills. An interdisciplinary team of lecturers guides the students through the various modules.

Der Megatrend der Urbanisierung ist unübersehbar - weltweit leben heute bereits 55% der Weltbevölkerung von 7.6 Milliarden Menschen in Städten. Hochrechnungen zeigen, dass der Anteil bis 2050 voraussichtlich auf 68% ansteigen wird - dann bei 10 Milliarden Erdenbewohnern.1 Zieht es die Bevölkerung vom Land in die Städte ergeben sich für die Entwicklung des urbanen Wohn-, Arbeits- und Lebensraums vielfältige Herausforderungen. Einerseits gilt es, die zur Verfügung stehenden gebaute Infrastruktur entsprechend auszulasten und mit nachhaltigen Neubauten zu ergänzen sowie die soziale Kohäsion weiterzubauen. Andererseits müssen auch Stoffkreisläufe und Mobilität auf dieses Wachstum und die damit einhergehenden Mengen eingestellt werden. Hinzu kommen weitere globale Phänomene wie Völkerwanderungen durch Konflikte und Klimaerwärmung.

Stadtplanung, Raum und Architektur sind dabei wesentliche Stellschrauben. Begehrter zentraler Wohnraum wird immer knapper und dadurch teurer, es wird mehr Landschaftsraum erschlossen und versiegelt, Ballungsgebiete verursachen Hitzeinseln. Neben Wohnraum braucht es in der Stadt eine ausreichende Versorgung mit Bildungsangeboten, Arbeitsmöglichkeiten und Gesundheitsversorgung.

Eine Strategie, die weltweit zur Verdichtung von Städten herangezogen wird, ist der Einsatz von Wohn- und Hybridhochhäusern: Vertikal gestapelte Raumeinheiten mit polyvalenten Mehrfachnutzungen in einem Gebäude oder im Ensemble vermitteln eine urbane Atmosphäre und bieten das Angebot einer „kompakten Stadt“ auf kleinem Raum.

In der Schweiz lassen sich ähnliche Entwicklungen beobachten. Seit der Revision des Raumplanungsgesetzes 2013 ist die „Innenverdichtung“ gesetzt und Städte richten sich entsprechend darauf ein. Obwohl der Anteil der Schweizer Bevölkerung im städtischen Raum bereits knapp 85% (Stand 2017) umfasst,2 ist auch hierzulande mit einer fortschreitenden „Verstädterung“ zu rechnen. Dabei ist seit 2010 auch ein Comeback der Wohnhochhäuser erkennbar.3

In der aktuellen Diskussion in der Schweiz werden Antworten gesucht, inwiefern Wohn- und Hybridhochhäuser unter den geltenden Rahmenbedingungen einen ökonomisch, ökologisch und sozial nachhaltigen Beitrag zur qualitätsvollen Urbanisierung und Verdichtung leisten können.

Da die Wohnhochhäuser der letzten Jahrzehnte vorwiegend im höheren Preissegment mit grösserer Wohnfläche und gehobenem Ausbaustandard entstanden sind - oft als Reaktion auf hohe Land- und Baukosten, können sie in der Regel wenig zu einer Verdichtung beitragen, da wenige Bewohnerinnen und Bewohner eine relativ grosse Fläche beanspruchen.

Um eine - auch sozial nachhaltige - Durchmischung der Bevölkerung zu erreichen und die Identität und Qualität des geschätzten urbanen Lebens weiterzuentwickeln, ist ausserdem ein signifikanter Anteil von preiswertem Wohnraum in Städten notwendig. Neben einem optimierten Raumangebot für Bewohnende und passenden Kompensationsangeboten besteht auch das Ziel, durch strategische Kostenoptimierungen einer vereinfachten Bauweise und „Low-Tech-Ansätze“ Wohnraum im niedrigen MietpreisSegment anbieten zu können. Des Weiteren stellt sich die Herausforderung des sozialen Gefüges und der Nachbarschaft dieser „Vertikalen Stadt“.

Die diesjährigen Mastermodule der Fokusse „Struktur“ und „Energie“ finden in Kooperation mit dem Kompetenzzentrum Typologie & Planung (CCTP) des Instituts für Architektur statt und bauen auf verschiedene Hochhaus-Forschungsprojekte auf. Die Forschenden vermitteln dabei spezifische Grundlagenwissen für die Semesterarbeit der Studierenden.

Die Entwürfe von Wohn- und Hybridhochhäusern werden vor diesem Hintergrund entwickelt und wollen insbesondere durch Antworten auf folgende Fragestellungen zur Diskussion beitragen: - Wohn-/Hybridhochhaus als Verdichtungsinstrument: Wie können Wohnflächen optimiert werden und welche Kompensationsangebote sind dazu notwendig?

Introduction

The megatrend of urbanisation is impossible to ignore: today, 55% of the world’s total population of 7.6 billion people are already living in cities; estimates are that by 2050 that percentage will increase to 68%, of a world population of 10 billion.1 When the population moves from the countryside to the cities, it results in diverse challenges for the development of urban spaces for housing, work and living. On the one hand, it is necessary to relieve the burden on the available built infrastructure accordingly and to supplement it with new sustainable buildings and to increase social cohesion. On the other hand, material cycles and mobility have to be adjusted to this growth and the associated crowds. In addition, there are also global phenomena such as mass migrations caused by conflicts and climate change.

Urban planning, space and architecture are crucial “adjusting screws” in this process. Desirable centrally located housing is becoming increasingly scarce and hence expensive; more and more countryside is being developed and built-over; agglomerations cause islands of heat. In addition to space for housing, the city needs sufficient supply of educational offerings, opportunities for work and healthcare.

One strategy being used worldwide to increase the density of cities is the use of residential and hybrid high-rises: vertically stacked spatial units with polyvalent multiple use in one building or in an ensemble of buildings convey an urban atmosphere and offer a “compact city” within a small area.

Similar developments can be observed in Switzerland. Since the revision of the Spatial Development Law in 2013, the goal has been “increasing the density of the inner city”, and cities are responding accordingly.

Although the percentage of the Swiss population living in urban areas is already just under 85% (as of 2017),2 here too we can count on “urbanisation” to continue. Since 2010, there has also been an evident comeback of residential high-rises.3 The current discussion in Switzerland is searching for answers to the questions how much residential and hybrid high-rises can make an economically, ecologically and socially sustainable contribution to high-quality urbanisation and increasing density. Because the residential high-rises of recent decades are predominantly in the upper price segment with lots of floor area and high standards of quality - often in response to high land and construction costs - as a rule they contribute little to increasing density since just a few residents occupy a relatively large space.

To achieve a (socially sustainable) mix of population and further refine the identity and quality of desirable urban life, a significant percentage of affordable housing in cities is necessary. In addition to optimised offerings of space for residents and suitable compensatory offerings, another goal is offering housing in the lower price segments for rent by means of strategic cost optimisations of simplified construction methods and “low-tech” approaches. Moreover, there is the challenge of the social fabric and the neighbourhood of this “vertical city.”

Als grösste Schweizer Stadt setzt sich Zürich stark mit seiner zukünftigen Entwicklung auseinander. Auf dem bestehenden Stadtgebiet sollen bis ins Jahr 2040 ungefähr 100‘000 neue Einwohnerinnen und Einwohner eine Wohnung sowie entsprechende Arbeitsorte, Schulen Sportanlagen und Infrastruktur nutzen können (Innenverdichtung). In einem kommunalen Richtplan sind die strategischen Stossrichtungen formuliert und öffentlich zur Mitwirkung kommuniziert. Einen hohen Stellenwert nehmen dabei die soziale Durchmischung und preiswerter Wohnraum, belebte Erdgeschosse und Begegnungsorte im Quartier, Nutzungsdurchmischung und Nahversorgung sowie Stadtklima/Stadtnatur und Freiräume ein. Bestehende Qualitäten und Identitäten sollen erhalten bleiben und um weitere polyzentrische Ortsqualitäten angereichert werden.1 Neben dem Anstieg des Wohnbedarfs wurde auch der Anteil gemeinnütziger Wohnungen angehoben, bis 2040 soll ihr Anteil am Wohnungsmarkt von rund 25% auf 33% steigen.2 Hochhäuser sind in Zürich als Gebäude mit einer Höhe von mehr als 25m definiert. Je nach Höhe sind durch die Bau- und Zonenordnung verschiedene Gebiete ausgewiesen. Hochhäuser müssen im Vergleich mit der gewöhnlichen Bebauung einen ortsbaulichen Mehrwert erreichen.

Sie sind in hoher architektonische Qualität zu gestalten und dürfen die Nachbarschaft nicht wesentlich beeinträchtigen - insbesondere durch ihren Schattenwurf.3 Für die Stadt Zürich wurde inzwischen mehrfach die „Akzeptanz der Dichte“ und die Haltung der Zürcherinnen und Zürcher untersucht. Dabei wurde festgestellt, dass für rund 73 Prozent Hochhäuser eine wichtige Eigenschaft für städtisches Leben ist (gehört völlig dazu, gehört dazu, teils/teils). Ausserdem sind die befragten Städterinnen und Städter mit kleineren Wohnflächen und geringerer Ausstattung zufrieden, solange Lage und Verkehrsanbindung gut sind.4 Knapp die Hälfte (48%) der Befragten kann sich zudem vorstellen, in einem Hochhaus mit mehr als acht Geschossen zu wohnen.5

As the largest city in Switzerland, Zurich is working intently to develop for the future. By 2040, around 100,000 new residents will need to have flats and suitable workplaces, schools, sport facilities and infrastructure (urban density). A municipal guideline formulates the strategic measures and communicates them to the public to encourage their participation.

It places high value on social mix and affordable housing, active use of ground-floor spaces and local gathering places, mixed use and local retail, and urban climate/nature and open spaces. Existing characteristics and identities should be retained and enriched with additional polycentric qualities.1 In light of the increasing need for housing, the percentage of non-profit apartment buildings has been increased; by 2040 their share of the housing market should increase from around 25% to 33%.2 High-rises in Zurich are defined as buildings more than 25 meters tall.

Depending on their height, the building and zoning codes assign them to different areas. High-rises should improve architectural quality relative to their surroundings. They should be designed to be high-quality and should not detract from the neighbourhood in any way, for example, with cast shadows.3 The “acceptance of density” and the attitudes of residents of Zurich have been studied multiple times. Around 73% of them consider high-rises an important quality of urban life (“completely part of it”, “somewhat part of it”, “so-so”). Moreover, the city dwellers surveyed are satisfied with small flats and more modest furnishings as long as the location and public transport are good.4 Just under half of those surveyed (48%) can imagine living in a high-rise with more than eight storeys.5

Unter dem Titel struktur_transfer gehen wir Fragen zu relevanten Problemstellungen der Zivilgesellschaft nach und schärfen das Bewusstsein und die Verantwortung der Studierenden für unsere Umwelt.

Der Begriff Struktur begleitet uns auf allen Ebenen der Architektur und über den gesamten Entwurfsprozess. Struktur steht für Ordnung und das Rationale in der Architektur. Mittels strukturiertem Denken und Entwerfen entwickeln wir Strategien um komplexe Problemstellungen zu verstehen, zu bearbeiten und zu bewältigen.

Structure Transfer

Under the title structure_transfer, we explore questions concerning relevant problems of civil society and heighten the students’ awareness of and responsibility to our environment.

The concept of structure concerns us at all levels of architecture and throughout the design process. Structure stands for order and the rational in architecture. By means of structured thinking and design, we develop strategies to understand, prepare and master complex problems.

Die vertikale Stadt

Alles begann mit einem Missverständnis. Die Menschen wollten Marduk als ihren Gott ehren und bauten einen Turm der bis in den Himmel reichen sollte. Der wahre Gott jedoch hielt das Bauwerk für überheblich und masslos. Er verwirrte die Sprachen der Architekten, Ingenieure und Bauarbeiter, und das Projekt war zum Scheitern verurteilt.1 Das Schicksal des Turms zu Babel muss uns zu denken geben. Das Streben in den Himmel zu bauen ist so alt wie die Menschheit, und die Architekturgeschichte begann mit einem Desaster. Aber der Mythos lebt, und er setzt gerade bei uns zu einem neuen, moderaten Höhenflug an.

In der Stadt Zürich waren hohe Häuser, Hochhäuser und geschweige denn Wolkenkratzer für lange Zeit ein Tabu.2 So ist das heutige Stadtbild nicht von Hochhäusern geprägt. Die Nebeldecke vermögen die Türme noch nicht zu durchstossen. Vereinzelt, an strategischen Punkten setzen sie jedoch durchaus städtebauliche Akzente. Die angestrebte Verdichtung nach innen und der Wunsch nach einem grossstädtischen Lebensgefühl führt zu jener diskreten Urbanität,3 die Zürich in allen Rankings mit den lebenswertesten Städten mithalten lässt. Hochhäuser gehören da inzwischen ganz selbstverständlich dazu.4 Nun, Hochhäuser mögen die Skyline beleben und sie stärken das Ego der Bauherren und Architekten, sowie der Bewohner in den oberen Etagen.

Was tragen sie jedoch zur Lebensqualität der Stadt bei? Leisten Hochhäuser einen Beitrag zu gemeinschaftlichen Werten, zum öffentlichen Raum? Zur Frage, wie sich die Stadt in der Vertikalen entwickeln kann, haben die bisher in Zürich erstellten Geschäfts- und Wohnhochhäuser keine überzeugenden Antworten geliefert. Dazu müsste man ein Hochhaus nicht als Haus, sondern als Quartier, als ein komplexes Konglomerat von Nutzungen, als einen Teil der Stadt verstehen.

Im Fokus Struktur werden wir entsprechend Szenarien für die vertikale Stadt entwickeln und diese in ein konkretes Hochhausprojekt umsetzen.

Wir werden Raumstrukturen entwerfen, die es erlauben unterschiedliche Nutzungen zu stapeln, aufzuschichten, vielleicht sogar aufzutürmen.

Die Erschliessungsstruktur wird dabei eine entscheidende Rolle spielen, ebenso wie die Tragstruktur und die Infrastruktur.

Mittlerweile nimmt sich des Problems Raumplanung eine Schar von Fachleuten an. Die Frage bei all diesen historischen und aktuellen Versuchen bleibt jene nach dem utopischen respektive pragmatischen Gehalt.

Dem Begriff Utopie ist das Scheitern eingeschrieben, die Utopie ist nicht zur Verwirklichung gedacht. Manches, das Architekten, Politikerinnen, Raumplaner für die Zukunft entwerfen, mag ihnen selbst pragmatisch erscheinen, dem Publikum aber utopisch vorkommen. Anderes ist als provokative Utopie gedacht und zeitigt doch reale Auswirkungen. In der Diagnose sind sich alle einig, doch die Lösungsvorschläge divergieren. Im Grunde wollen alle dasselbe: sensibilisieren - und ein jeder sieht sich als Pionier. Schliesslich geht es auch um die Aufmerksamkeit des Publikums. Das Thema ist komplex, das Publikum interessiert sich vielleicht für Architektur, Natur, Politik oder gesellschaftliches Leben, aber wer interessiert sich schon für Raumplanung.

Dementsprechend hilfreich sind Metaphern, die alle Facetten des Themas zusammentragen.

Eine komfortable Skitourismusgrossstadt auf dem Matterhorn analog zur spanischen Feriendestination Benidorm; grossflächige künstliche Seen, die das Gold der Alpen, das Trinkwasser, rückstauen; Hochhäuser rund um den Zürichsee bieten verdichteten Wohnraum für 2,3 Millionen Menschen, die für Kreativität, Ökonomie und Wissenschaft nötige kritische Masse einer Grossstadt; die Agglomerationen, gestreute Bausünden, werden rückgebaut, und die Natur dient wieder als Erholungsraum.

Grün wird die Schweiz sein, entleert und also schön.

Utopien einlassen mag? Sein Ausgangspunkt ist pragmatisch: Als Mitarbeiter der ETH-Filiale Studio Basel vermisst er die Schweiz. Unter Mitarbeit der Stararchitekten Roger Diener, Jacques Herzog, Marcel Meili und Pierre de Meuron will das Studio Basel nicht mehr und nicht weniger als ein neues Bild der Schweiz entwickeln.

Akribisch werden seit vier Jahren Daten zusammengetragen, eine Publikation der daraus resultierenden Erkenntnisse und vor allem von neuen Schweizer Karten ist für 2004 vorgesehen. Tausend Seiten soll das Buch haben und ein neues Schweizbild ermöglichen. Vor dem Hintergrund dieser Sorgfalt ist es verständlich, dass Christian Schmid die Szenarien von mvrdv als pure Public Relation einschätzt, irrelevant, weil leer, aber sexy. Den Reader Stadtland Schweiz, in dem sich die Visionen mvrdvs neben anderen Beiträgen finden, beurteilt er hingegen als wertvoll: inhaltlich wenig Neues, liegt das grosse Verdienst der

Everything began with a misunderstanding. The people wanted to worship Marduk as their god and built a tower that was supposed to reach into heaven. The true God, however, considered the structure arrogant and inordinate. He confounded the languages of the architects, engineers and construction workers, and the project was condemned to failure.1 The fate of the Tower of Babel must give us pause. The effort to build into heaven is as old as humanity, and the history of architecture began with a disaster. But the myth lives on, and in us especially it is beginning a new, moderately high-altitude flight.

In the city of Zurich, tall buildings and high-rises - to say nothing of skyscrapers - were taboo for a long time.2 So its skyline today is not marked by high-rises. The towers cannot yet penetrate the cloud cover.

Isolated at strategic points, however, they do provide accents within the town planning. The desired increase of density inward and wish for a cosmopolitan feeling leads to the discreet urbanity that makes Zurich competitive in all the ranks of the most liveable cities.3 In the meanwhile, high-rises are an unquestioned aspect of that.4 Now, high-rises can make the skyline livelier, and they boost the egos of developers, architects and the residents of the upper floors. But what do they contribute to the quality of life in the city? Do high-rises contribute to social values or to public space? The commercial and residential highrises built in Zurich have yet to offer any convincing answers as to how the city can grow vertically. To do so, a high-rise must be understood not as a building but rather as a neighbourhood, as a complex conglomerate of uses, as part of the city.

In the Structure focus, we will develop scenarios for the vertical city accordingly and realise them in a concrete high-rise project. We will design spatial structures that make it possible to stack, layer and even pile up different uses. The structure of access will play a crucial role here as well the bearing structure and the infrastructure.

Ort Site

Drei Baufelder stehen zur Auswahl. Sie liegen alle im Gebiet 1 des Hochhausleitbildes der Stadt Zürich. In diesem Gebiet ist die Höhe grundsätzlich nicht beschränkt.1 Die Baufelder stehen in Bezug zu den das Gleisfeld überquerenden Brücken (Hardbrücke, Duttweilerbrücke und Europabrücke). Hochhäuser haben an diesen Standorten das Potential als Brückenkopfe eine prägende städtebauliche Wirkung zu entfalten.

Luigi Snozzi hat das Gleisfeld als eisernen Strom beschrieben, als eine, im Gegensatz zur Limmat trennende und nur schwer zu überwindende Schneise im Stadtkörper. Hochhäuser können über den Gleisraum hinweg kommunizieren, stadträumliche Beziehungen aufbauen und die Ränder dieses prägnanten Leerraums neu definieren. Zudem sind Schattenwürfe von hohen Häuser auf das Gleisfeld baurechtlich vertretbar.

Die genaue Lage und die Höhe der Hochhäuser werden durch die Studierenden individuell bestimmt. Die persönliche städtebauliche Auseinandersetzung mit der Stadtstruktur, dem angrenzenden Quartier, dem Gleisfeld, und der Brücke bildet die Grundlage für die präzise Setzung.

Es sind starke und eigenständige Konzepte gefordert, sowohl auf inhaltlicher wie auch auf struktureller und formaler Ebene.

Three building sites are available for selection: they are all located in Area 1 of the high-rise guideline of the City of Zurich. Building heights are in principle not restricted in this area.1 The building sites relate to the bridges crossing over the track area (Hard Bridge, Duttweil Bridge and Europa Bridge). High-rises in these locations have the potential as bridgeheads to greatly influence the look of the city.

Luigi Snozzi has described the track area as an iron river, as an open strip that, in contrast to the Limmat River, separates the volume of the city and is difficult to overcome. High-rises can communicate beyond the track area, established connections in urban space, and redefine the edges of this striking void. Moreover, the shadows high-rises cast on the track area conform to the building code.

The precise position and height of the high-rises will be determined individually by the students. The coming to terms personally through town planning with the urban structure, the adjacent neighbourhood, the track area and the bridges is the basis for precisely locating structures.

The task calls for strong, original concepts not only in terms of content but also at a structural and formal level. .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Ausgangslage ist ein gut durchmischtes Stadtquartier, wo gewohnt, gearbeitet und gelebt wird. Man geht Einkaufen, manchmal auswärts Essen, ins Fitnessstudio, zum Arzt und zum Friseur. Hoffentlich gibt es ein gutes Kino oder ein Kleintheater in der Nähe. Ein Hotel wäre wünschenswert und eine Kinderkrippe, eine tolle Bar und vor allem öffentlicher Raum, einen Platz, wo man sich trifft und wo sich gemeinschaftliches Leben abspielt. Die Bevölkerung sollte durchmischt sein, alleinstehende und Familien, ältere und jüngere, von hier und von dort und mit unterschiedlichem sozialen Hintergrund. Die Leute bewegen sich mehrheitlich zu Fuss, mit dem Fahrrad und dem öffentlichen Verkehr. Privatautos werden in der Innenstadt an Bedeutung verlieren, aber eine angemessene Anzahl an Parkplätzen sollte verfügbar sein.

Solche Quartiere gibt es in der Stadt Zürich und in anderen Städten, aber sie sind traditionell horizontal strukturiert. Wir wollen ausloten, wie sich ein durchmischtes urbanes Raumprogramm vertikal entwickeln lässt. Wir geben keine maximale aber auch keine minimale Höhe vor. Wir werden jedoch intensiv über die Höhe und die Dichte diskutieren. Das Thema hat somit neben der städtebaulichen und architektonischen auch eine soziale Relevanz für die Zivilgesellschaft.

The initial situation is an urban neighbourhood with a good mixture of use, where people dwell, work and live. They go shopping, eat out sometimes, go to the fitness studio, to the doctor, to the hair stylist. With luck there is a good cinema or a small theatre nearby. A hotel would be nice as well as a day nursery, a great bar and above all public space: a square where people meet and community life takes place. The population should be well mixed, too: singles and families, the old and the young, from here and from elsewhere, of diverse social background. People usually get around on foot, on a bicycle or by public transport. Private cars become less important in the city centre but there should be an adequate number of parking places.

There are such neighbourhoods in Zurich and in other cities, but traditionally they are structured horizontally. We want to explore whether a mixed urban spatial programme can be developed vertically. We are not setting minimum or maximum heights. We will, however, have intense discussions about height and density. Der Begriff Struktur begleitet uns auf allen Ebenen der Architektur und über den gesamten Entwurfsprozess. Sowohl die Struktur der Stadt, des Raumes wie auch der tragenden Elemente sind für den Entwurf prägend. Struktur steht für Ordnung und für das Rationale in der Architektur. Das strukturierte Denken und Entwerfen bilden die Basis für Projekte, die kohärente Antworten zu komplexen Fragestellungen geben können.

Gesellschaftliche Aspekte des Wohnens im Hochhaus sind leider selten Bestandteil des aktuellen Diskurses. Das Hochhaus als sozialräumlicher Lebensmittelpunkt der Bewohner inmitten aktiver Nachbarschaften ist nicht nur weitestgehend unerforscht, sondern in aktuellen Projekten kaum existent. Dabei stellt sich angesichts eines akuten Missverhältnisses zwischen Angebot und Nachfrage von städtischem Raum sowie dem Verhältnis von Bodenwert zu Nutzwert die Frage, welches Potenzial eine vertikal gebaute Umwelt bei der urbanen und sozial nachhaltigen Nachverdichtung in sich birgt.

Im Fokus Architektur und Struktur soll eine Typologie erarbeitet werden, welche die stadt- und sozialräumlichen Qualitäten der Stadt in die Vertikale bringt. Das Hochhaus ist dabei als Experimentierfeld einer vertikalen Zukunft zu betrachten, auf welchem die folgenden Fragestellungen insbesondere räumliche und strukturell behandelt werden könnten:

- Wie entstehen aktive Nachbarschaftsbeziehungen in Hochhäusern und wie finden informelle Orte der Begegnung und Kommunikation ihren typologischen Ausdruck?

- Welche räumlichen Voraussetzungen müssen geschaffen werden, damit das Hochhaus als ein vertikales Quartier betrachtet werden kann, in welchem soziale Gefüge entstehen können?

- Wie müssen Aussenräume von Wohnungen in Hochhäusern konzipiert werden, damit die im herkömmlichen Geschosswohnungsbau besetzte Nutzung als Bindeglied zwischen Wohnung und Stadt trotz der grossen Höhe funktioniert?

- Ist der Aussenraum in Hochhäusern eher ein Innenraum, ein introvertierter Ort für die Bewohner der vertikalen Szenerie oder gibt es neue Ansätze für einen stadtzugewandten Aussenraum?

Bei der Vorbereitung und/oder Recherche von Fallbeispielen und in der Semesterarbeit wären deshalb folgende Kriterien sehr interessant:

- Räumlich/typologische Struktur: insbesondere das Schaffen formeller und informeller Begegnungsräume, wo soziale Nachhaltigkeit entstehen kann.

- Bewohnerschafts- und Nutzungsstruktur: sozialverträglicher Bewohner- / Nutzungsmix

- Organisations- und Rechtsstruktur: definiert u.a. die Partizipation, Aneignung und Verpflichtung von Bewohnern mit ihrem Lebensumfeld.

- Infrastruktur/Verwaltung & Service

- Standortqualität: u.a. Nähe an öffentlichen Dienstleistungen The concept of structure concerns us at all levels of architecture and throughout the entire design process. Both the structure of the city and of space and that of the bearing elements are crucial to the design. Structure stands for order and the rational in architecture. Structured thinking and design form the basis for projects that can offer coherent answers to complex questions.

The social aspects of living in high-rises are, unfortunately, only rarely addressed in discussions today. The high-rise as the centre of life in the social space of the residents amidst active neighbourhoods has not simply gone largely unstudied but barely exists in current projects. The acute disparity between the supply of and demand for urban space, and the relationship of land value to use value, raises the question of the potential a vertically built environment has for an urban, socially sustainable increase in density.

In the Architecture and Structure focus, we will work out a typology of the qualities of a vertical urban and social space in the city. The high-rise should thus be seen as a field for experiments in a vertical future in which the following questions can be addressed, especially spatially and structurally:

- How are active relationships among neighbours established in high-rises, and how are informal places for encounters and communications expressed typologically?

- What are the spatial conditions that need to be created for the high-rise to be considered a vertical neighbourhood in which social fabrics can form?

- How should outdoor spaces for high-rise apartment buildings be conceived so that the traditional function of multi-storey apartment buildings as a link between housing and the city is fulfilled despite their great height?

- Is the outdoor space of high-rises rather an indoor space, an introverted place for the residents of its vertical scenery, or are there new approaches to outdoor space oriented towards the city?

For the preparation and/or research of case studies and in the semester project, therefore, the following qualities are very interesting:

- The structure of residents and use: The uses offered for a socially agreeable mix of residents.

- The structure of organisation and law: Defining participation, appropriation and also obligation of the residents to their surroundings.

- The quality of location: including the attraction of local amenities

Tragstruktur Load Bearing Structure

In diesem Kurs wollen wir unter anderem tragstrukturelle Konzepte entwickeln und diese in Tragwerke umsetzen. Das Tragwerk des Entwurfsprojekts soll dabei nicht als etwas behandelt werden das erledigt ist, sobald es technisch funktioniert, sondern die Tragstruktur und das dazu gehörende Tragwerk sollen kontinuierlich und zusammen mit der architektonischen Idee und den anderen Aspekten des Entwurfsprozesses entwickelt werden. Das Potential des tragstrukturellen Konzepts im Entwurf zeigt die Tatsache, dass das Tragwerk eine nicht austauschbare Notwendigkeit und der langlebigste Teil eines Gebäudes ist. Wenn demnach das Konzept der Tragstruktur kohärent mit der architektonischen Idee ist, kann diese dauerhaft im Bauwerk verankert werden.

Die Diskussion der tragstrukturellen Konzepte und deren Umsetzung in ein technisch funktionierendes Tragwerk ist essentiell. Darum wird der Kurs kontinuierlich durch Thomas Kohlhammer begleitet. Als Unterstützung im Entwicklungsprozess der Tragstruktur und in den Diskussionen wollen wir mit Tragstrukturmodellen arbeiten. Diese stellen alle tragenden Elemente des Bauwerks oder eines massgeblichen Ausschnitts dar und helfen die Funktion des Tragwerks zu verstehen sowie dessen räumliches Potential darzustellen resp. zu überprüfen.

Auch soll das Konzept der Tragstruktur in Relation zur architektonischen Idee kontinuierlich präzisiert und überprüft werden. Dabei sollen einfache Abstraktionen dieser Dualität durch Modelle oder Skizzen helfen.

In this course we want, among other things, to develop concepts for load-bearing structures and realise them in supports. The supporting structure of the design project should not be treated as something that is finished as soon as it functions technically, but rather the bearing structure and the associated support should be continually developed together with the architectonic idea and the other aspects of the design process. The potential of the concept for the bearing structure in the design reveals that the supporting structure is an unalterable necessity and the part of the building with the longest life. Accordingly, if the concept of the bearing structure is coherent with the architectonic idea, the latter can be anchored in the structure in an enduring way.

It is essential to discuss the concepts for the bearing structure and how they can be realised in a technically functional support. For that reason, Thomas Kohlhammer will be a constant presence in the course. We want to work with models for load-bearing structures to assist the process of developing our support and our discussions. The models represent all of the load-bearing elements of the building and help us to understand the function of the support as well as to present or test its spatial potential. The concept of the load-bearing structure should constantly be made increasingly precise and tested in relation to the architectonic idea. Simple abstractions of this duality in the form of models and sketches should help achieve that.

Semesterstruktur Semester Structure

Vorübungen Das Semester beginnt mit zwei Vorübungen, wo wir uns mit der Struktur des Ortes und des Programms auseinandersetzen. Die erste Vorübung hat einen theoretisch, wissenschaftlichen Zugang und dient dazu, sich das notwendige Grundwissen über die Aufgabe in effizienter Form anzueignen. Die vertikale Stadtstruktur muss erdacht, entworfen und entwickelt werden. Dazu werden wir internationale Beispiele analysieren und die Erkenntnisse auf das Fallbeispiel Zürich anwenden.

Die zweite Vorübung hat einen experimentellen und kreativen Charakter und hat das Ziel, den Einstieg in die Entwurfsaufgabe zu erleichtern. In der dritten Semesterwoche planen wir eine Exkursion nach Zürich um die Hochhausstandorte zu begehen.

Semesterarbeit Die Semesterarbeit ist gegliedert in Zwischenkritiken, Pin-ups und Tischkritiken und wird begleitet durch fachliche Inputs die gemeinsam mit dem Fokus Architektur & Energie organisiert werden. Das Semester wird von Thomas Kohlhammer begleitet, mit dem die Entwicklung der Tragstruktur vertieft wird.

Wir werden über das gesamte Semester intensiv mit Modellen arbeiten, um die Raum- und Tragstruktur dreidimensional zu entwickeln. Die Studierenden werden die Möglichkeit haben 360° / VR für ihren Entwurf zu verwenden.

The semester begins with two preliminary exercises in which we grapple with the structure of the site and of the programme. The first preliminary exercise has a theoretical, scientific approach and serves to appropriate the necessary basic knowledge in an efficient form by means of the task. The vertical structure of the city must be conceived, designed and developed. To that end, we will analyse international examples and apply the insights derived to the case study of Zurich.

The second preliminary exercise has an experimental and creative character and the goal of making it easier to start the design task. For the third week of the semester, we are planning an excursion to Zurich to visit sites of high-rises.

Semester Project The semester project is divided into interim reviews, pin-ups and desk-side reviews and is accompanied by professional input sessions, that are organised with the design studio Architecture & Energy. Thomas Kohlhammer will supplement the semester with an in-depth look at the evolution of the load bearing structure.

Throughout the semester we will work intensely with models to develop the spatial and bearing structure three-dimensionally. Students will have the opportunity to use 360° / VR in their designs.

Einführung

Während die Schweiz ihren zweiten Hochhaus-Boom seit den 1960ern erlebt, fällt auf, dass sich Wohnhochhäuser in ihrer Neuauflage zu Luxusobjekten entwickelt haben. Einerseits sind sie als gebauter Ausdruck technischer Errungenschaften und höchster Ausbaustandards in ihren Erstellungskosten weit überdurchschnittlich teuer. Andererseits sind die zunehmend ins Stadtzentrum gerückten Wohnhochhäuser in der Regel von kommerziellen Investoren erstellt, die den neugewonnenen Wohnraum im hartumkämpften Schweizer Wohnungsmarkt quasi meistbietend vermieten oder gleich verkaufen. Dadurch ist Wohnen in den Hochhäusern der jüngeren Generation zumeist raumgreifend, energieaufwändig, teuer und in hohem Masse exklusiv. Dem Potential des Hochhauses zu einer sozial und ökologisch nachhaltigen Stadtverdichtung beizutragen, werden diese Bauten nicht gerecht.

Im Frühjahrssemester 2019 werden wir uns auf die Suche nach Alternativen zu dieser Entwicklung begeben. Dabei werden uns zwei Schwerpunkte beschäftigen.

Low-Tech

Wie weit können gebäudetechnische Systeme wie Lüftung, Heizung, Kühlung, Steuerungen, aber auch Strom und Wasser, reduziert bzw. optimiert werden? Welche Rolle spielt das mitteleuropäische Klima mit seinen jahreszeitlichen Schwankungen für unseren Entwurf - und welche das spezifische Mikroklima der konkreten Parzelle? Wie können durch vereinfachte Konstruktionsweisen der Bauprozess optimiert und Aufwände reduziert werden? In welchem Verhältnis stehen der Erstellungsaufwand und der Betriebsaufwand des Hochhauses zueinander? Wie muss die Fassade reagieren, damit Energieströme mit möglichst geringem Technikaufwand sinn- und massvoll gesteuert werden können? Welche räumlichen Konfigurationen (differenzierte Schnittfiguren, Raumschichtung etc.) begünstigen den Low-Tech-Ansatz? Was ist ein realistisches Behaglichkeitsspektrum, das mit angemessen reduziertem Technikeinsatz im und am Gebäude erreicht werden kann?

Hier hilft uns die Erfahrung von gebauten Beispielen auch von weniger hohen Gebäuden aus anderen geografischen und klimatischen Kontexten.

Wohnungsbau-Typologie

Was sind neue Wohnformen und sinnvolle Wohnungsgrössen, die erlauben, das Hochhaus mit angemessener (technischer) Ausstattung und hoher Raum- und Lebensqualität zu gestalten? Wie können gemeinschaftlich genutzte Kompensationsräume die individuellen Wohnflächen ergänzen und so ihren effektiven Raumbedarf reduzieren? Welche strukturellen Hochhaustypologien sind geeignet, um den Anforderungen verschiedener Mieterschaften in einer durchmischten Nutzung gerecht zu werden?

Wie gehen wir entwerferisch mit dem Anspruch an Nutzungsflexibilität und dem Anspruch an spätere Anpassungsmöglichkeiten um? Welche hochhausspezifischen atmosphärischen Qualitäten können wir ausser dem visuellen Phänomen der Aussicht für die verschiedenen Gebäudenutzungen aktivieren?

Hier wird uns der aktuelle Stadtzürcher Wohnungsbau beschäftigen, in dem vor allem genossenschaftliche Bauprojekte (wie etwa Mehr als Wohnen oder das Zollhaus) die Möglichkeiten unkonventioneller Formen des Zusammenlebens innerhalb eines breitgefächerten Wohnungsangebotes ausloten.

In der Überlagerung dieser Themenfelder, Low-Tech und WohnungsbauTypologie, und einer eventuellen Synthese aus beiden Ansätzen liegt das Potential zur Generierung eines neuen und zeitgemässen Hochhaustypus.

Introduction

As Switzerland experiences its second high-rise boom since the 1960s, it is striking that in this new variation residential high-rises have become luxury objects. On the one hand, as the built expression of technological achievements and the highest standards of appointments, their production costs are far more expensive than average. On the other hand, the residential high-rises that are moving ever close to the city centre are, as a rule, built by commercial investors who lease the newly created living space in the hotly competitive Swiss housing market to the highest bidder, as it were, or immediately sell it. As a result, living in high-rises is for the younger generation is usually spacious, consumes lots of energy, is expensive and to a large degree exclusive. These buildings do not do justice to the potential of the high-rise to contribute to a socially and ecologically sustainable increase in urban density.

In the spring semester of 2019, we will set out in search for alternatives to this development. We will concern ourselves with two focuses.

Low-Tech

How much can such building technology systems as ventilation, heating, cooling and controlling but also electricity and water be reduced or optimized? What role does the Central European climate, with its annual cycle, play in our design, and what role is placed by the specific microclimate of the lot in question? How can the building process by optimized and expenditures reduced by using simplified construction methods? How does the effort of building a high-rise relate to the effort of operating it?

How must the faรงade react in order to control energy flows in a sensible and measured way with as little technological expenditure as possible?

Which spatial configurations (differentiated floor plans, layering of space, etc.) benefit the low-tech approach? What is a realistic spectrum of comfort that can be achieved with appropriately reduced technology in and on the building?

Here we are helped by experience with built examples, including buildings not as high from other geographic and climatic contexts.

Typology of Residential Architecture

What new forms of housing and sensible flat sizes make it possible to design the high-rise with appropriate (technical) fittings and high quality of space and of living? How can common-use compensation spaces supplement individual living spaces and thus reduce their effective need for space? Which structural typologies of high-rise are suited to doing justice to the demands of different renters in a mixed-use building? How can our designs meet the demand for flexibility of use and for possibilities to adapt later? Which atmospheric qualities specific to the high-rise can we activate for different building uses apart from the visual phenomenon of the prospect?

Here we will study current residential architecture in the city of Zurich in which above all cooperative building projects, such as Mehr als Wohnen (More than Housing) and the Zollhaus (Customshouse) explore the possibilities of unconventional forms of living together within a broad selection of flats on offer.

The building section defines the handing of daylight, air movement and spatial sequence.

In the overlap of these two thematic fields, Low-Tech and Typology of Residential Architecture, and in a potential synthesis of these two approaches, lies the potential to generate a new and contemporary type of high-rise.

Der Bauplatz befindet sich im einst industriell geprägten Stadtquartier Zürich West. Mit dem Wegzug der Industrie, befindet sich das Quartier seit den 1990er Jahren im Wandel. Der Stadt Zürich bietet sich eine der grössten innerstädtischen Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten. Zahlreiche Umbauten und Neubauten wurden seither fertiggestellt. Durch kooperative Entwicklungsplanung wurde mittels des Entwicklungskonzeptes Zürich West bereits eine Vielzahl an programmatisch unterschiedlichen Projekten in der unmittelbaren Nachbarschaft realisiert. Weitere sind in Planung. Viele dieser Projekte zeichnen sich durch eine überdurchschnittlich hohe architektonische Qualität aus. Mit dem Tram Zürich West wurde der boomende Stadtteil besser erschlossen. Gleichzeitig wurde der bestehende Autobahnzubringer, der durch das Quartier verläuft, neu gestaltet, um der vielseitigen Nutzung des Quartiers gerecht zu werden.

Die Parzelle zwischen Hardturmstrasse und Limmat zeichnet sich durch ihre ausgeprägte Zweiseitigkeit aus. Im Norden grenzt sie direkt an den Flussraum. Dort erstreckt sich am gegenüberliegenden Limmatufer der grüne Stadtteil Wipkingen mit vergleichsweise lockerer, kleinteiliger Wohnbebauung. Zwischen der Parzelle und dem Tramdepot Hard stellt der Ampèresteg über die Limmat eine direkte Fussgängerverbindung zum 2004 fertiggestellten Wipkingerpark dar, der mit Grünanlage und grosszügigen Badetreppen als wichtiger quartierübergreifenden Naherholungsraum fungiert.

Im Süden der Parzelle verläuft die dicht befahrene Hardturmstrasse. Diesseits des Flusses ist die Bebauung durch ehemalige Industriegebäude und grossmassstäbliche Neubauten geprägt. Die Zürcher Hochschulen sind hier ebenso vertreten, wie die Kulturinstitutionen, Gewerbe und Nachtleben.

Das Grundstück liegt im Gebiet 2 des Hochhausleitbildes der Stadt Zürich. Gemäss Leitbild sind der Einpassung ins Quartier und der sorgfältigen Bezugnahme auf umliegende Hochhäuser hohe Bedeutung beizumessen. Je nach Projekt ist eine Gebäudehöhe bis 80m zulässig, die Platzierung des Gebäudes auf der Parzelle ist dabei frei.

The building site is located in the once industrial urban neighbourhood Zurich West. Since industry moved away, the neighbourhood has been changing since the 1990s. It offers the city of Zurich one of its largest centrally located opportunities for development. Numerous renovations and new buildings under the Zurich West development concept have already been realized as part of programmatically distinct projects in the immediate neighbourhood. Others are being planned. Many of these projects are distinguished by above-average architectural quality. With the Zurich West streetcar, this booming section of the city has improved transport access. At the same time, the existing motorway feeder that runs through the neighbourhood was redesigned to do justice to the diverse use of this neighbourhood.

The lot between Hardturmstrasse and the Limmat River stands out for its distinct two-sidedness. To the north, it borders directly on the area next to the river. From there, the Wipkingen green neighbourhood extends along the opposite bank of the Limmat with comparatively loose, small-scale residential buildings. Between the lot and the Hard streetcar depot, the Ampèresteg over the Limmat River provides a direct pedestrian connection to Wipkingerpark, which was completed in 2004, whose green space and generous swimming steps functions as an important local recreational area for the whole neighbourhood.

The heavily trafficked Hardturmstrasse runs to the south of the lot. On this side of the river, the buildings are former industrial buildings and large-scale new buildings. Zurich’s universities are represented here, as are cultural institutions, commerce and night life.

The site is located in Area 2 of the high-rise guideline of the City of Zurich. The guideline attributes great importance to integrating the building into the neighbourhood and making direct reference to the surrounding high-rises. Depending on the project, a building height up to 80 meters is permitted; the building may be placed freely on the lot.

Programm Program

Das Hochhaus ist primär als Wohnbau zu konzipieren. Dem jeweiligen Konzept entsprechend sind Kompensationsflächen für die Gemeinschaftsnutzung im und um das Gebäude zu planen, die das Wohnprogramm ergänzen.

Das Hochhausleitbild der Stadt Zürich sieht für Projekte im Gebiet II ausserdem Nutzung mit öffentlichem Anteil im Erdgeschoss und zumindest halböffentlichem Anteil in einem der obersten Geschosse vor. Die Studierenden definieren diese öffentlichen Nutzungen selbst.

The high-rise should be designed primarily as a residential building. Depending on the concept, compensation areas for common use should be planned in and around the building to supplement the housing programme.

The high-rise guideline of the City of Zurich also specifies that projects in Area have some areas with public use on the ground floor and at least semi-public use on one of the upper storeys. The students can define these public uses themselves.

Semesterstruktur Semester Structure

Die Annäherung an die Aufgabe wird mit einer spielerischen, einwöchigen Vorübung eingeleitet, die das individuelle Projekt vorbereitet.

Im Entwurf des Hochhauses arbeiten die Studierenden im detaillierten Gebäudemassstab: Wie sieht die Struktur, die räumliche Figur, die Materialisierung und die Konstruktion eines Hochhauses aus, das effizient genutzen, preiswerten Wohnraum ohne aufwändige Gebäudetechnik bietet und dabei dem klimatischen, kulturellen und nachbarschaftlichen Kontext in Zürichs ehemaligem Industriequartier gerecht wird?

Die Arbeit am Semesterentwurf ist begleitet durch wöchentliche Tischkritiken und strukturiert durch Pin-Ups, Zwischen- und Schlusskritik. Zusätzlich finden regelmässige Input-Veranstaltungen zum Aufbau der für die Semesterarbeit relevanten Expertise statt, die gemeinsam mit dem Fokus Struktur gestaltet werden.

The approach to the task is introduced by a playful, one-week preliminary exercise in preparation for the individual project.

When designing the high-rise, the students work with a detailed scale building: what sort of structure, spatial figure, materialisation and construction does a high-rise have in order to offer efficiently used, affordable housing without elaborate building technology while also doing justice to the climatic, cultural and neighbourly context of Zurich’s former industrial district?

Work on the semester design is accompanied by weekly table reviews and structured by pin-ups, an midterm review and a final review. Breathing Image

Wie stellen wir immateriell-energetische und sinnlich-atmosphärische Phänomene im rein visuellen Medium des Bildes dar? Auf der forschenden Suche nach einer Bildform, einer Sprache, die eine vielschichtige sinnliche Erfahrung vermitteln kann, wird uns die Zürcher Künstlerin Esther Mathis begleiten. Als Fotografin beschäftigt sich Mathis mit dem Wechselspiel aus natürlicher Umgebung und menschlichen Eingriffen. Ihre minimal bewegten Video-Loops spielen dabei suggestiv mit Licht, Reflexion, Temperatur und Luftbewegung und generieren poetische Bilder von hoher atmosphärischer Dichte.

How do we present immaterial-energetic and sensory-atmospheric phenomena in the purely visual medium of the image? The Zurich-based artist Esther Mathis will accompany us on our investigative search for a pictorial form, a language that can communicate a multi-layered sensory experience. As a photographer, Mathis works with the interplay of natural environment and human interventions. Her video loops of minimal movement play suggestively with light, reflection, temperature and air movement and generate poetic images of great atmospheric density.

Focus Project

Einführung

In diesem Semester werden wir mit dem Forschungsprojekt „The Culture of Water“ weiterfahren, dass im Herbstsemester 2018 in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT) gestartet wurde. Das Hauptziel der Studie ist die Erforschung der Architektur, der Lebensund Landschaftsbedingungen um den Vierwaldstättersee und um den nordöstlich von Kyoto gelegenen Biwa-Sees, der grösste Süsswassersee Japans. Dies ist das zweite Semester eines Forschungsprojekts, das in den nächsten fünf Jahren laufen soll und einen facettenreichen Ansatz für die Analyse, Diskussion und Produktion von Architektur rund um die beiden Seen liefern soll.

Seit der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts ist der Austausch zwischen den westlichen Ländern und Japan intensiv und produktiv gewesen, mit einer besonders engen Beziehung in architektonischen Fragen. Diesem Trend folgend, wird das Thema dieses Forschungsprojektes von Studierenden der HSLU und des KIT geteilt und ausgetauscht. Wir werden den architektonischen Entwurf als spekulative Forschungsmethode nutzen, um plausible Lösungen für ein zeitgemässes Bauen mit, auf und um Wasser vorzuschlagen.

Im ersten Semester der Forschungsstudie untersuchten wir allgemeine Aspekte bezüglich des Zusammenhangs zwischen menschlichen Siedlungen und natürlichen Lebensräumen in direktem Kontakt mit dem Wasser, sowie der Art und Weise wie Architektur gestaltet wird, wenn Wasser nicht nur als Landschaftselement, sondern auch als Gestaltungswerkzeug betrachtet wird. Durch die Betrachtung verschiedener urbaner Massstäbe und Typologien um den Vierwaldstättersee und den Biwa-See, von Städten und industriellen Entwicklungen bis hin zu kleinen Häusern und Feldern, haben wir ein breites Verständnis für die Besonderheiten der einzelnen Kontexte gewonnen, um schliesslich architektonische Projekte unter Berücksichtigung der vielfältigen Bewertungen des Wassers zu generieren: - Wasser und Gefahr - Die Aufgabe die Kraft des Wassers unter Kontrolle zu bringen.

- Wasser und Versorgung - Als lebenswichtiges Element für das menschliche Überleben und als Lebensgrundlage.

- Wasser und Transport, Produktion und Entsorgung - Ein Medium, um Güter und Personen zu transportieren und die Arbeit zu erleichtern.

- Wasser und die Wahrnehmung von Landschaft - Wasser und seine reflektierende Wirkung verwandelt Landschaft in eine unendliche Einheit, die speziell seit der Industrialisierung inszeniert wurde.

- Wasser und Komfort - Wasser ist in unserer menschlichen Existenz mit allen möglichen Sinnen verbunden. Es ist Teil unseres Klimas, unserer Kultur und unserer Ökosysteme, in engem und breitem Umfang.

Im kommenden Semester werden wir uns auf die erste der oben genannten Wasserbewertungen konzentrieren: „Wasser und Gefahr“. Das Gebiet zwischen Risleten und Buochs in Kanton Nidwalden, das in dieser Hinsicht besonders heikel ist, wurde ausgewählt, um alternative architektonische Antworten auf die aktuelle Frage vorzuschlagen. Dabei wird die architektonische Gestaltung als produktives Instrument zur Bewältigung der natürlichen Auswirkungen von Naturgefahren (verursacht durch Wasser) in diesem Gebiet zu verstehen.

Introduction

This semester we will be continuing with the research project “The Culture of Water”, which began jointly with the Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT) in the autumn semester of 2018. The main goal is to study architectural, living and landscape conditions in the surroundings of Lake Lucerne and Lake Biwa. The latter is Japan‘s largest freshwater lake and lies northeast of Kyoto. It is the second semester for this research project, which is planned to run another five years. It targets a multifaceted approach to analysis, discussion and production of the architecture around both lakes.

Students’ works during the first semester of The Culture of Water. Works by Jordi Olivella Cirici, Charlotte Hustinx, Nico Jenni and Shehrie Islamaj.

An intensive and fecund exchange has existed between Western countries and Japan since the latter half of the nineteenth century, especially as far as architecture is concerned. Following this trend, the research project will be thematically divided up among the students of HSLU and KIT, fostering an exchange of views and experiences. We will be employing architectonic design as a speculative research method for proposing plausible solutions in contemporary building on and near water.

In the first semester of the research project, we examined the general aspects on how human settlements and natural environments bordering directly on water are interlinked. Additionally the design of architecture was scrutinised when water is not just considered a landscape element but as an instrument for design. We gained broad insights into the features and peculiarities of the individual contexts by inspecting various standards and typologies in urban design in the vicinities of Lake Lucerne and Lake Biwa, spanning cities and industrial developments to small houses and fields. This made it possible for us, in the end, to produce architectonic projects that take into account the manifold ways in which water is viewed and judged: - Water and hazards - the challenge of bringing the force of water under control.

- Water and supply - as a vital element for human survival and basis for our livelihood.

- Water and transportation, production and waste disposal - a means for conveying goods and commuters and for facilitating work.

- Water and perception of landscape - water and its reflective properties transform landscape into an infinite uniform entity. This effect has been orchestrated and exploited particularly since the onset of industrialisation.

- Water and comfort -water relates to all the senses in human existence. It impacts our climate, our culture and the ecosystems we inhabit both on a small and large scale.

In the coming semester we will be concentrating on the first of the abovementioned ways of viewing water: “Water and hazards�. The region lying between Risleten and Buochs in the canton of Nidwalden has been decided on for the project. It is especially tricky in regard to this semester‘s study focus and a real challenge for finding alternative architectonic solutions to current problems. In this context, architectonic design is to be understood as a valuable vehicle for controlling the natural consequences of natural hazards (caused by water) in this area.

Einführung

Der Vierwaldstättersee, der sich durch die Kantone Obwalden, Luzern, Schwyz, Uri und Nidwalden schlängelt, ist zweifellos eines der wichtigsten Naturelemente der nicht ans Meer grenzenden Schweiz. Die Seen sind damit ein wichtiges nationales Symbol und eine wichtige natürliche Ressource. Neben der Schönheit der Landschaft, sind sie oft auch eine Quelle von Süsswasser, ein Transportmittel und ein Ort der Arbeit. Seen in den Mittelpunkt dieser Forschungsprojekt zu stellen bedeutet, ihre sanfte, aber ausdrucksstarke Erscheinung als Referenz zu nehmen. Das Meer bleibt unbegrenzt; der Fluss fliesst in ständiger Bewegung; wir werden uns die scheinbar gemeinsamen Grundlagen eines Seeufers ansehen, um uns dann in seine bemerkenswerten Singularitäten zu begeben.

Gleichzeitig sind wir daran interessiert, die Rolle des Wassers als direktes Mittel zur Gestaltung von Bautechniken und -materialien zu verstehen und die Art und Weise, wie Wasser die formalen und funktionalen Aspekte der architektonischen Gestaltung beeinflusst:

Introduction

Lake Lucerne, which winds through the cantons of Obwalden, Lucerne, Schwyz, Uri and Nidwalden, is unquestionably a key natural feature of landlocked Switzerland. Its lakes are vital national symbols and an important natural resource. Besides enhancing the beauty of the landscape, the lakes are often a source of fresh water, a means of transportation and places where people work. By focusing this research project on lakes means that their gentle but dramatic appearance will provide a point of reference. Oceans remain without bounds; rivers flow and are in constant movement - we will be scrutinising the seemingly mutual basic principles of a lake shore in order to then explore its surprising singularities.

At the same time we are interested in understanding the role of water as a direct means of designing construction technology and materials.

Wasser und Gefahr Water and Hazards

Die Aufgabe, die Kraft des Wassers unter Kontrolle zu bringen, ist ein Thema, das während des gesamten Entwurfsprozesses berücksichtigt werden muss, angefangen von der Planung auf territorialer Ebene bis hin zu den Details eines Hauses. In diesem Sinne wollen wir in eine spekulative Architekturdesign-Forschung einsteigen, um über den Einfluss von Naturgefahren sowie die formalen Reaktionen, die wir in der Architektur zum Schutz vor schädlichen Auswirkungen von Wasser und Feuchtigkeit finden können, nachzudenken. In beiden Fällen werden technische Lösungen im Hinblick auf ihr formales Potenzial untersucht.

Die Schweizer Regierung konzentriert sich auf den Schutz von Gebäuden vor Naturgefahren auf vier Ebenen : 1. Planungsmassnahmen - Regelung der Gestaltung von Gebäuden, so dass ihre Fassaden und Tragkonstruktion ein Minimum an gefährdeten Bereichen enthält; 2. technische Messungen - z.B. automatische Schotte, Windsensoren für Sonnenschutzgeräte usw.; 3. Materialauswahl - Förderung der Verwendung robuster Materialien; 4. organisatorische Aufgaben - Festlegung von Verhaltensregeln wie das Schliessen von Fenstern beim Verlassen des Hauses, Installation von temporären Schutzvorrichtungen usw.

So ist der aktuelle Ansatz zum Bauen gegen Naturgefahren eher technisch, da das Thema noch nicht vollständig in den Bereich eines breiteren architektonischen Ansatzes eingetreten ist. Wir schlagen vor, diesen Trend zu ändern, indem wir einen architektonischen Ansatz zu diesem Thema aus drei Hauptebenen vorschlagen:

- Auf territorialer Ebene, indem man die idealen Gebiete findet, in denen Gebäude mit weniger Naturrisiken konfrontiert werden. Dies wäre eine einfache Aufgabe auf einem leeren, idealen Feld, aber in einer realen Umgebung muss man sich mit vielen anderen Aspekten auseinandersetzen, wie z.B. der bestehenden Infrastruktur, konsolidierten städtischen Siedlungen, der Kulturgeschichte usw. Die Hauptaufgabe besteht daher darin, das Potenzial einer optimierten Platzierung von Gebäuden gegen Naturgefahren in einem bestimmten Kontext zu ermitteln.

- Auf der Ebene des Gebäudes, indem man den Schutzbedarf als Gestaltungsmittel betrachtet, das die Gebäudekonzeption und ihre Komponenten leiten würde.

- Auf der Ebene der Konstruktionsdetails, wobei Wasser als zu schützendes Element, aber auch als Quelle zur Erzeugung einer einzigartigen Atmosphäre betrachtet wird.

Jeder Student erhält einen aussagekräftigen Landstrich für die Forschung im Bereich zwischen Risleten und Buochs im Kanton Nidwalden. Dieser Bereich wird gewählt, um wesentliche Antworten auf das Thema Naturgefahrenschutz als architektonische (und nicht technische) Aufgabe zu finden. Die Auswahl des Gebietes erfolgte nach Daten aus Gefahrenkarten und zusätzlichen Planungsdaten des Kantons Nidwalden sowie der Gemeinden Buochs und Beckenried. Ähnlich wie im ersten Semester dieses Forschungsprojektes erhält jede(r) StudentIn einen „Streifen“ Land, der den Kontext und den „Spielplatz“ für das Projekt liefert. In diesem Rahmen wird jede(r) StudentIn seine/ihre eigene Strategie entwickeln, um das Leben in diesem Bereich in den kommenden Jahren zu erleichtern. Die Betrachtung der Gefährdung durch Wasserkräfte ist daher nur ein Aspekt eines Ansatzes, der sich speziell mit der „Kultur des Wassers“ als einem Schlüsselthema der Architektur befasst.

The task of controlling the force of water is a problem that must not be neglected throughout the entire design process, starting with planning at a regional level to the details of a house. In this sense we seek to embark on speculative architectural design research to reflect on the impact of natural hazards and formal responses that can be found in architecture for protection against the damaging effects of water and moisture. In both cases technological solutions will be investigated in regard to their formal potential.

The Swiss Federal Government focuses on the protection of buildings against natural hazards at four levels: 1. Planning measures - regulation of the design of buildings so that the vulnerability of their facades and supporting structures is minimal; 2. Technical measurements - e.g. automatic partitions/dividing walls, wind sensors for sunshades etc.; 3. Selection of materials - promoting the use of durable materials; 4. Organisational tasks - determining codes of behaviour such as locking windows when leaving the house, the installation of temporary safety devices/safeguards etc.

Current building solutions tend to be primarily technological in regard to natural hazards as a consequence. This is because the problem has not yet been completely embedded in a broader architectonic approach. We propose to change this trend by putting forward an architectonic approach to the problem from three principal angles:

- From a territorial angle by finding ideal environments in which buildings are subject to fewer risks from natural hazards. This would be an easy task at an ideal, empty site. But in a real-world environment we must consider many additional aspects, such as the existing infrastructure, consolidated public housing projects, cultural history etc. The key task is therefore to determine the optimisation potential of the placement of buildings for safeguarding against natural hazards in a specific context.

- At the level of the building itself by incorporating the safety requirements as a design element that governs the concept of the building and its components.

- At the level of construction details where protecting water is a factor as well as it being a source for creating a unique atmosphere.

Each research student will be assigned a distinctive tract of land between Risleten and Buochs in the canton of Nidwalden. The area will be chosen on account of finding solutions to the problems of safeguarding against natural hazards and as an architectonic (non-technological) assignment. The area is selected according to data from hazard maps and additional planning data for the canton of Nidwalden and the municipalities of Buochs and Beckenried. Like in the first semester of the research project, each student will be assigned a “stretch” of land that serves as the context and “playground” for the project. In this framework each student will develop their own strategy to facilitate living conditions in the area in future years. Considering the risks of the force of water is thus only one aspect of an approach that specifically concentrates on the “culture of water” as a key topic in architecture.

EntwurfsForschungsmethodik Design Research Methodology

Die Methodik und Darstellungsformen sind Teil des Projekts und werden in der Forschungsphase von den Studierenden aus Luzern und Kyoto definiert. Ziel ist es, die wichtigen Aspekte der Forschung abzubilden. Wir beabsichtigen, nach einer spekulativen Entwurfsforschungsmethode zu arbeiten, d.h. Entwurfsinstrumente und -prozesse zu nutzen, um sowohl theoretische als auch praktische Architekturaussagen zu formulieren.

Auf diese Weise werden die Studenten die Untersuchungen ihrer eigenen Streifen durchführen, indem sie eine Reihe von Forschungsphasen erstellen, die von generischem zu spezifischem Wissen oszillieren und umgekehrt: Materialien und Bautechniken in Bezug auf die Wirkung von Wasser in der Architektur, städtische und territoriale Analysen, Kartierungen von Topographien und Ökosystemen, Wechselwirkungen der Menschen mit der Landschaft, Bewegungsmuster usw.

The methodology and forms of presentation are part of the project and defined by the students from Lucerne and Kyoto during the research phase. The goal is the visualisation of the key research features. We intend basing our work on a speculative design research method, i.e., using design tools and processes to formulate both theoretical and practical architectural statements.

In this way students can investigate their assigned area by drafting a set of research phases that oscillate back and forth between generic and specific knowledge: materials and building techniques in regard to the impact of water on architecture, analysis of urban and regional environments, mapping the topographies and ecosystems, interaction between people and the landscape, patterns of movement etc.

Workshop an der HSLU und Interkulturelle Kommunikation Workshop at HSLU and Intercultural Communication

In den ersten beiden Wochen im Mai findet an der HSLU ein zweiwöchiger Workshop statt. Gruppen von Studierenden der HSLU und des KIT arbeiten gemeinsam an einer vergleichenden Bewertung und weiteren Analyse einer Vielzahl von Themen: Geschichte, Kultur, rechtliche Aspekte, topografische Bedingungen, Aspekte der Urbanisierung, Bautradition, zeitgenössisches Design, Fragen des Erbes, etc.

Es wird erwartet, dass die HSLU-Studenten während des Semesters regelmässig mit den Studierenden des KIT kommunizieren. Dies geschieht durch wöchentliche Einträge in unserem Blog www.thecultureofwater.wordpress.com und über unseren Instagram-Account the_culture_of_water.

In the first two weeks of May a two-week workshop is taking place at HSLU. Groups of HSLU and KIT students will be working together on a comparative evaluation and further analysis of manifold themes: history, culture, legal issues, topographic conditions, aspects of urbanisation, building traditions, contemporary design, conservation and cultural heritage, etc.

Einführung

Das Vertiefungsmodul widmet sich in diesem Semester unter dem Titel „Postmodernismus in Grossbritannien - Zwischen Bild und Konstruktion“ einigen zentralen Themen und Protagonisten der jüngeren Architekturgeschichte in England. Dabei bauen wir auf den Erkenntnissen des vergangenen Semesters auf, in dem wir uns mit der postmodernen Debatte in der Schweiz auseinandergesetzt haben. Die dabei vermittelten Grundbedingungen aus den Geisteswissenschaften genauso wie die Primärliteratur von Architekturtheoretikern wie Charles Jencks, Heinrich Klotz und Robert Venturi bilden die Basis für die nun stattfindende Beschäftigung mit spezifisch angelsächsischen Themen der Postmoderne.

Introduction

This semester’s in-depth module is titled “Post-Modernism in Great Britain: Between Image and Construction” and addresses central themes and protagonists of the recent history of architecture in England. In it we build on the insights from the previous semester during which we studied the postmodernist debate in Switzerland. The basic circumstances imparted from the humanities and the primary literature of architectural theorists such as Charles Jencks, Heinrich Klotz and Robert Venturi form the basis for addressing specifically Anglo-Saxon themes of postmodernism.

Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg war die Debatte in England durch Arbeiten geprägt, die der Architekturhistoriker Reyner Banham unter dem Begriff New Brutalism zusammenfasste. Diese von Architekten um Alison und Peter Smithson getragene Bewegung pflegte einen ehrlichen und direkten Umgang mit Material und Konstruktion, stellte zugleich aber auch einen sozialen Anspruch an die gebaute Umwelt. Der durchaus kritische Umgang mit der Moderne fand insbesondere durch Mitglieder des Team X auch in den Debatten an den CIAM Kongressen der 1950er-Jahre internationale Beachtung und bildete den Nährboden für eine Generation von damals jungen Architekten wie James Stirling, Norman Foster und Richard Rogers.

Der von den Smithsons geprägte Begriff des As Found als Ausdruck der Realität des Vorgefundenen, wurde durch die nachrückende Generation in eine architektonische Sprache transformiert, die sich weniger der Poesie des Rohen verpflichtet fühlte, denn den Weg in einer bildhaft übersteigerten Inszenierung funktionaler und technischer Parameter suchte.

Exemplarisch für diese Entwicklung steht James Stirlings Frühwerk: Ausgehend von seinem wuchtigen Ingenieurgebäude für die Universität in Leicester (1959-1963) und der geisteswissenschaftlichen Fakultät in Cambridge (1964-1967), entwickelte Stirling in den Folgejahren mit Bauten wie dem Forschungszentrum für Olivetti in Haslemere (1969-1972) eine architektonische Sprache, die sich an die Produktästhetik der Zeit anlehnte und technische Innovation auf sehr direkte Art in architektonische Gestalt übersetzte.

Sein Werk war unmittelbar prägend für Architekten wie Norman Foster und Richard Rogers, die nach einem gemeinsamen Beginn in den 1960erJahren ihre technizistisch geprägten Positionen entwickelten. Dabei bewegte sich Foster - inspiriert von den visionären Konzepten Buckminster Fullers - zwischen hoher Abstraktion in der Erscheinung, etwa beim Willis Faber Dumas Building in Ipswich (1971-1975), und einer an Expressivität kaum zu überbietenden Sprache wie beim Renault Center in Swindon (1981-1983). Den Bauten gemeinsam war ein Interesse, durch die Material- und Strukturlogik zu einer architektonischen Gestalt zu finden. Richard Rogers, dessen gemeinsam mit Renzo Piano entworfenes Frühwerk für das Centre Pompidou in Paris (1971-1977) bis heute eine Ikone darstellt, entwarf mit dem Lloyds Building in London (1978-1986) einen Komplex, dessen Anspruch an technische Effizienz und architektonische Expressivität einzigartig ist.

Während Foster und Rogers in den Folgejahren ihre Haltungen weiter verfeinerten, entwickelte sich Stirlings Interesse immer mehr hin zu einer Architektur, die ihre Gestalt in der Reinterpretation historischer Typologien und Formen suchte. Damit rückte sie wieder näher an kontinentaleuropäische Positionen heran, wie sie Aldo Rossi, Oswald Mathias Ungers und die Gebrüder Krier verfolgten. Davon zeugen bedeutende Museumsbauten Stirlings wie der Turner Flügel der Tate Gallery in London (1980-1985) oder die Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart (1979-1984).

Uns interessiert die Entwicklung dieser Personen vor dem Hintergrund der kulturellen Entwicklung in den 1960er- und 1970er-Jahren in England: Welche Rolle spielten beispielsweise die Roaring Sixties und die Pop Art im architektonischen Diskurs? Inwieweit haben die sozial- und 57

architekturtheoretischen Experimente von Archigram ihren Niederschlag in den Bauten von Foster und Rogers gefunden? Wie ist das Denken des Architekten Charles Jencks mit dem Spätwerk von Stirling in Beziehung zu setzen, und welche Rolle spielte die Debatte zum kritisch konservatorischen Umgang mit Stadt in seinem Werk? Wir widmen uns damit auch in diesem Semester einem Thema, das in unseren Augen für die heutige Debatte relevant ist - man denke dabei an Positionen wie beispielsweise Caruso St. John.

The debate in Great Britain after the Second World War was marked by works that the architectural historian Reyner Banham summed up under the term New Brutalism. This movement, led by architects around Alison and Peter Smithson, cultivated an honest and direct approach to materials and construction but at the same time had a social expectation of the built environment. Their quite critical attitude towards modernism on the part of members of Team X in particular received international attention in the debates in CIAM congresses as well during the 1950s and provided fertile ground for a generations of then young architects such as James Stirling, Norman Foster and Richard Rogers.

The term “as found” coined by the Smithsons, as an expression of the reality of existing situation, was transformed by the subsequent generation into an architectonic language that felt less indebted to the poetry of the raw because it sought its path in a visually heightened dramatization of functional and technical parameters. James Stirling’s early work exemplifies this development: starting out from his massive engineering building for the University of Leicester (1959-1963) and that for the humanities Faculty of History at Cambridge (1964-1967), in the following years Stirling developed for buildings such as the Olivetti research centre in Haslemere (1969-1972) an architectonic language that borrowed from the product aesthetics of that time and translated technical innovation into architectonic form in a very direct way.

His work had a direct influence on architects such as Norman Foster and Richard Rogers, who after starting out together in the 1960s developed their technology-oriented positions. Foster, inspired by the visionary concepts of Buckminster Fuller, alternated between highly abstract looks, such as the Willis Faber Dumas Building in Ipswich (1971-1975), and a language whose expressivity could scarcely be surpassed, as in the Renault Centre in Swindon (1981-1983). These buildings have in common an interesting in arriving at an architectonic form by way of the logic of material and structure. Richard Rogers, whose early collaboration with 58

Renzo Piano on the Centre Pompidou in Paris (1971-1977) remains iconic even today, designed the Lloyd’s Building in London (1978-1986): a complex that is unique in its claim to both technical efficiency and architectonic expressivity.

Whereas Foster and Rogers refined their stances in subsequent years, Stirling’s interest moved increasingly to an architecture that sought its form in the pure interpretation of historical typologies and forms. It thus moved closer to continental European attitudes such as those pursued by Aldo Rossi, Oswald Mathias Ungers and the Krier brothers. Important museum buildings by Stirling such as the Turner Wing of the Tate Gallery in London (1980-1985) and the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart (1979-1984) are evidence of this.

We are interested in how these people evolved against the backdrop of the cultural developments of the 1960s and 1970s in Great Britain: For example, what role did the Swinging Sixties and Pop Art play in the architectonic discourse? To what extent did the experiments in social and architectural theory of Archigram influence the buildings of Foster and Rogers? How should the thinking of the architect Charles Jencks be related to Stirling’s late work, and what role did the debate over the critically conservative approach to the city play in his work? This semester we will dedicate ourselves to a theme that in our eyes is relevant to today’s debate: consider, for example, architects such as Caruso St. John.

Das Semester wird in drei Abschnitte gegliedert: Zunächst erarbeiten wir uns mittels Lektüre und gemeinsamer Diskussion von Texten verschiedener Autoren, der Exkursion nach England und Inputreferaten einen Überblick sowie ein Vokabular, um das Thema zu verstehen, einzugrenzen, und für unsere eigene Argumentation nutzbar zu machen. Im Anschluss daran dient dieses Wissen als Grundlage für die eigenständige, schriftliche Auseinandersetzung mit einem selbst gewählten Aspekt zum Thema, das in Form eines Vortrages präsentiert wird. In der dritten Phase werden die formulierten Thesen weiter verfeinert und als umfangreiche Textarbeit in eine verbindliche Form gebracht.

The semester is divided into three sections: Firstly, we will prepare by reading and jointly discussing texts by various artists; the excursion to Great Britain and input presentations will offer an overview as well as a vocabulary that will help us to map out and understand the theme and make it useful for our own argumentation. Collecting Thoughts on Spaces The Making of an Anthology

The Course introduces and discusses contemporary architectural theories and critical thinking, providing students with essential knowledge to place their own actions and designs into a historical, theoretical, cultural and social context.

Through case studies of anthologies and readers of key texts on architecture, the course is set and developed in an open cultural reflection and devoted to the understanding of theories and critical interpretations as a design tool, encouraging students to be able to think across tendencies, trends and events and position themselves as conscious architects in today’s society. The different themes presented through several texts and projects are understood as tools in the hands of architects.

The architectural theories are not pure abstractions, they move between absolute positions and relative relations.

Structural Transformations

Michel Foucault attributes the scientific concept of structure to botanists, who in the spirit of the nascent natural sciences grasped everything visible (and only that) and specifically according to “four variables only: the form of the elements, the quantity of those elements, the manner in which they are distributed in space in relation to each other, and the relative magnitude of each element.� The load-bearing structure of a building can also be characterized in this way, without incorporating the materials used at all. Over the course of the last two hundred years, it has sought connections to an archaic approach as well as to generic illustration of abstract principles. The load bearing structure gives concrete form to an overarching idea with a specific order.

This lecture course explores approaches to and developments of designs for bearing structures in the history of architecture. Much like the use of materials, the use of certain structures is understood as a transformation process in which crossconnections are pursued. In addition to important aspects and trends, examples of important figures are presented in detail. Guest presentations connect the historical view with current practice. The goal of this study is to become familiar with important historical references, fundamental constructive conceptions and link them with contemporary issues.

This semester keynote lectures aim to raise the question not only about the hidden ideologies in visual images, but also to create other narratives and other myths around an architectural complex - in this case the building of education at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and the Institute of Architecture, in Horw.

With this very well known example, we will investigate in what way new myths could be created by approaching the Institute of Architecture in a different way, than we are conventionally used to and how other realities can be projected by using specific communication tools, such as writing, animation and photography, etc.. Each tool has the capacity to reveal different fictional and factual aspects in regards to our perception of the space and its new mythology created by us.

By adding other fictive narratives to the familiar story of the school, we will formulate a factive future vision for the Institute of Architecture, which is to educate architects.

Die Studienreise führt uns in diesem Semester nach Grossbritannien. Wir beginnen unsere Reise in London, um dann über Swindon, Oxford, Leicester, Cambridge, Ipswich und Hunstanton weiter Richtung Norden zu fahren.

Thematisch befassen wir uns mit dem New Brutalism der Postmoderne. Dabei werden wir uns unter anderen vertieft mit Bauten von Denis Lasdun, Norman Foster, James Stirling und Alison & Peter Smithson auseinandersetzen.

Die Reise findet in der 5. Semesterwoche statt und wird gemeinsam vom Modul Vertiefung und dem Fokus Struktur organisiert. Das detaillierte Programm, die Teilnahme und die Kosten werden bei der Einschreibung zu Beginn des Semesters bekannt gegeben.

This semester’s study trip will take us to Great Britain, where, setting out from London, our trip will take us through the country and lead us to cultural very diverse locations. The themes we will address include postmodernism and New Brutalism. Among other things, we will study in detail buildings by Norman Foster, James Stirling and Alison and Peter Smithson.

The trip will take place during the fifth week of the semester and organised together with the Structure in-depth study subject and focus. The detailed program, the participation and the costs will be announced at enrolment on semester start.
