Welcome to SAMPLINGS ... This is the premier issue of SAMPLINGS, our new catalogue offering of Samplers and Needlework pictures, and we do hope you will enjoy it. In response to the great demand for fine quality antique needlework, and since antique textiles are a significant part of our business, we will be issuing a catalogue twice a year for our many customers and friends who are scattered widely throughout the United States and Canada, as well as overseas. We think this will be an important way of helping you to build your sampler collection and to acquire choice pieces as they become available. Our firm was established in 1947, and we have been at the same location for 43 years. In the current economic climate we are most fortunate in having a strong, loyal following. We like to think our positive relationship with clients, many of whom are now second generation, is because of our commitment to customer satisfaction. Buying antiques should be based in large measure on trust and confidence, and we try to treat each customer as we ourselves like to be treated. Every item in this catalogue is guaranteed to be authentic and original, and you can rely on our expertise in describing each piece as to age and condition. Obviously, all merchandise is offered subject to prior sale. While the primary purpose of conserving any textile is to insure its longevity, we generally find that the process also does much to improve its visual appearance. Using the finest archival and acid-free materials, and employing correct conservation methods, we can properly clean, stabilize, and mount your fme antique pieces. If reframing is necessary, we can provide advice, or perhaps supply an antique frame from our inventory. Upon request we can install TruVue ÂŽConservation Clear glass which helps protect the needlework, by blocking 97% of the harmful Ultraviolet light Work is accepted from collectors as well as from dealers and institutions. Each job receives prompt attention and our personal supervision, and practically all work is performed on the premises. Maryette Harris This beautiful and rare piece of Connecticut needlework is signed "Maryette Harris wrought this in the 12th year of her age, Middletown, July 1826". The unusual oval pictorial composition, the lush detail of the scene , the variety of stitches employed and the strength of the color all contribute to the highly desirable nature of thi s sampler. There is only one other known sampler from this unidentified Connecticut school. --~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~In excellent condition and acidfree mounted, the sampler is in a handsome beveled bird' s eye maple frame of the period with UV conservation glass. Sarah Preston This is positively a gem: a band sampler made by Sarah Preston in 1787 in the classic Philadelphia style. Though unfinished in the center band, the needlework exemplifies the finest of the period. The first letter of most of the words is capitalized and worked in a contrasting color of silk; we have seen this same graphic application on many other fine quality 18th century Philadelphia pieces. The condition is excellent with no loss or fade. It is acid-free mounted, and in a 19th century mahogany veneer frame. Sampler size 9W'x8". Price $2200.

2 A Nest of Birds This is an uncommon find- a very appealing small needlework picture, quite finely worked in silk on polished cotton. A brightly colored mother bird is feeding a striped worm to her three babies in a natural setting. It is most likely from New England, circa 1825. Acid-free mounted and in a handsome mahogany cove-molded frame from the mid-19th century. Needlework size 7"

Catherine Geiger This is a large engaging American sampler made by Catherine Geiger in 1819, most likely in Pennsylvania; she inscribed her work with the names of family members, specifically, Jacob, Christian, George, Mary, Paul and John. The sampler was recently deaccessioned from the Philadelphia Museum of Art and retains its original fine mahogany frame. Wrought in silk on linen and in very good condition, it has been acidfree mounted. Sampler size 20 o/." X 20". Price $2300.

Susanna Bell This endearing American band sampler was worked by Susanna Bell in her 11th year in 1813. She chose Lo feature a house, an oversized flower pot, and vine and tulip borders. The sampler presents the classic verse: "This work in hand my friends may have when I am dead and laid in grave". A color reproduction of this r:=:;:;;:;:;;;:;;=;::~:=~~=-~~~;:;:::::::;::;::=;::;:::;:;:;:::;,::;:;~::::;;:;;::::::;::;::::::;::;::=:"1 sampler will be included in an upcoming publication from Stewan, Tabori and Chang with the working Litle, A Friendship Keepsake, to illustrate this expression of friendship. 4 Amaranthine Flower Our small Pennsylvania sampler, while not signed or dated, features an interesting verse: "The only amaranthine [i.e., undying] flower on earth is virtue, the only lasting treasure- truth." The verse was authored by Wm. Cowper (1731-1800), the English poet who also wrote, in his Olney Hymns of 1779, the famous line, "God works in mysterious ways". The verse on this sampler is documented in American Samplers as appearing in r-==========================~~~.., American needlework as early as 1805. Our sampler depicts a colorful bouquet of morning glory, violets, carnation, and a rose and is of silk on linen, circa 1820. In excellent condition, and acidfree mounted. Phebe Eddy A small Westport, Massachusetts marking sampler made by Phebe Eddy in 1814; she was born December 8, 1803 to Ebenezer Eddy and Rachel Sherman. The verse "How lovely is virtue and truth when it becomes the standard of youth" is one of the more endearing that we have encountered. Made of wool on linen, it is in very good condition X-1 D C U "1' j M and has been acidfree mounted; the frame is modem. Sampler size 10 lf." X 10 'W'. Price $850.

5 Sarah Berry This large and colorful American sampler was beautifully worked by "Sarah Berry in the 13th year of her age, 182_". It is not uncommon to find that some time after the sampler's completion, the maker carefully picked out the last numeral ofthe year, so that her age could not be determined! Using luxurious satin stitches for her dramatic floral arrangements and working eight whimsical birds into the picture, young Sarah created a handsome example of classic American needlework. It is worked in silk on linen, is in excellent condition, and is acid-free mounted, currently in a new cherrywood stained frame. Sampler size 21" x 18 Price $3450.

6 Mary Dearborn A handsome American marking sampler showing Quaker influence, and with unusual phraseology: "Mary R. Dearborn's Property". This piece dates circa 1830, and an old label on the reverse indicated that this sampler was in the Traphagen School collection (an art college in New York) in 1939. Worked in shades of blue, tan and black silk on linen, it is in pristine condition, and in a reeded frame from the end of the 19th century. Acid-free mounted. Sampler size 10" X 12 V.". Price $900.
Emily More Emily More, born on June 26, 1813, to John and Phebe More, worked this appealing sampler in 1824. It is most likely from New England and is excollection Philadelphia Museum of Art. Impeccably worked in blue and tan silks on linen, it is in excellent condition, and acid-free mounted. It is in a fine mid19th century Dutch style gilt frame. Sampler size 18 W' X 13". Price $1450.

7 Lucretia H. Bucklin A well-documented sampler marked "Lucretia H. Bucklin 9th year of her age April 5, 1837 Providence R.I." The piece has an interesting provenance: it was pan of the Whitman Sampler Collection that was owned by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and it was subsequently deaccessioned. A strawberry and vine border surrounds the alphabets , verse and small parade of animals. Amy Richards This is a fine example of a family register sampler from New England; it was made by Amy Richards in August
r-==========~~~~~~~~~~=~=====, of 1824, in her 11th
year. She was the sixth child of Moses Richards and Esther Hodges Richards. Her sampler is worked in unusual and I!J)pealing shades of peach and rust silk on linen, and is in excellent condition. It is acidfree mounted and in a modem maple frame. Sampler size 17 x 17''. Price $1400.

9 Sophia Rittenhouse House Sampler This is a splendid example of Delaware Valley needlework featuring a double chimney Federal house and signed by a young lady from one of the most prominent Philadelphia families - Sophia Rittenhouse, circa 1825. The large and neatly worked sampler has an undulating vine border and several Quaker motifs. The roof of the house is delightfully worked in long white satin stitches, a fine contrast to the peach silk cross-stitch "bricks" of the house. Of silk on linen, it is in pristine condition, acid-free mounted into a new gold leaf frame in the 19th century style.

Sophia Rittenhouse Marking Sampler We are pleased to offer a small unframed marking sampler that may have been worked by the same young lady; it is signed Sophia Rittenhouse, 1821. Although these two pieces descended separately, there is every likelihood that we have the first marking sampler and the later accomplishment of the same needleworker - certainly, the dates corroborate this. Worked in silk and linen and in excellent condition. Sampler size 9" X 81;4". Price $425.

10 Amy Chamberlin This newly discovered sampler is an excellent example of Chester County, Pennsylvania needlework; it was worked by Amy Chamberlin in 1804 and is one of an important recognized group from that area. For a closely related example that was obviously worked in the same school, see the sampler made by Hannah White, #40 in Samplers & Samplermakers. These two samplers are the same size and share the identical Quaker-influenced center alphabet, queen' s stitch strawberry border, the cartouche, and the verse. The pine trees that were worked by Amy Chamberlin on her sampler appear on other documented samplers from this same Chester County school. Worked in silk on linen, and in very good condition, with a few minor holes. Acid-free mounted and in a mid-19th century walnut frame.

Susan Swain This highly desirable example of Quaker needlework is signed "Susan Swain, Nantucket, 4mo 17th, 1821". The abbreviation "4mo" translates as the month of April. The Quakers typically used the numerical sequence for the months, rather than the names of the months as we know them, because of the pagan origins of the names. Susan Swain was a descendant of John Swain (1633-1715), one of the original proprietors and landowners on Nantucket Island. This marking and motif sampler features the block letter alphabets that we associate with Quaker school needlework, and exhibits many of the Society's stylized motifs: miniature flower baskets, sprigs of carnations, black birds and the gliding swan. It was worked in silk on linen in the classic Quaker blue on tan, and is in very good condition with two small darns to the linen. The sampler has been acid-free mounted and is in a 20th century maple frame.

12 Mary Mellon An interesting example from Berks County, Pennsylvania, this large and important sampler by Mary Mellon, dated 1830, is filled with motifs that are indigenous to that specific area of Pennsylvania. For a fascinating comparison, see Harriett Weiser's sampler also worked in 1830, on page 80, Historical Needlework of Pennsylvania; the two samplers share many of the identical motifs including the center flower vase, well house, cartouche, and queen's stitch flowers. The condition of the Mellon sampler is excellent; it is of silk on linen, and it retains its original color. Acid-free mounted, and now in a new gold leaf frame in the 19th century style. 13 Sophia Jones Our American band sampler was worked by Sophia Jones in the late 18th century. The bottom portion of the interior is worked in a sumptuous floral and hillock scene, surrounded by a strawberry and vine border. Miss Jones was quite an accomplished needleworker as evidenced by the resolution of the border at all four comers, no small feat for a young student Silk on linen and in mint condition, retaining its rich polychrome coloration. Acid-free mounted and in a handmade walnut shadow-box frame that replicates an 18th century original, with UV conservation glass. Sampler size 15" X 9 '/z''. Price $4200.

14 Julian Stevenson Southern samplers are rare, and we are fortunate to be able to offer this fine Baltimore example, signed by Julian Stevenson, 1820. This large and handsome sampler is from an identified group; the other known pieces (two of which are in the collection of the Maryland Historical Society) date from 1820 through 1833. It is likely that the maker of this sampler was the Julia Ann Stevenson of Baltimore who married Thomas King Carroll, governor of Maryland in 1829. The sampler was worked in silk on linen and exhibits the surface satin stitch to achieve the effect of the shimmering green windows. It also sports an unusual checkerboard dog, two towering pine trees, and a matched pair of bluebirds on the chimneys of the Federal brick house. The condition is very good and it is acid-free mounted and in a fine beveled mahogany 19th century frame. Sampler size 20" x22W'. Price $7,500.

Elizabeth Wyckoff We rarely fmd a sampler displaying as much documentation in the needlework itself as this choice example from New Jersey by Elizabeth Wyckoff; it is marked "Hunterdon County, Redington, 1835" (correct spelling of the town name is Readington). This richly worked piece includes six alphabets, four verses, a small monument, a house and fence scene, and a heart and book motif. Of silk on linen and in very good condition, with two minor holes. 16 Sarah Gordon This silk needlework mourning picture was worked iii Portland, Maine circa 1821. In the 1820's and 1830's this type of silk memorial was extremely popular in Portland, and the needlework teachers of that city carried this stylish form to great heights. The name of the maker, Sarah Gordon, is inscribed on the reverse paint glass mat; the epitaph, which was printed in Boston, (August 10, 1821) onto silk is dedicated "to the memory of Nathaniel Gordon who died October 8, 1805, aged 17 months". Sarah Gaffe Gordon (1796 - 1881) became the wife of Deacon Enos Reed of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The many painted details, mountains, houses, stream and swans, combine well with the lush needlework. It is in excellent condition, remarkably unfaded, and in its original gilt frame. Needlework size 16 W' X 18 W', glass size 19" X 22". Price $2300.

17 Rowson School Needlework This shimmering, elegant silk needlework picture is a fme example from the school of Mrs. Susanna Rowson of Boston, circa 1811. It was worked by an unknown needleworker as a memorial to M. and E. Coolidge, twin sisters with their dates of death inscribed, "M. obit June 25, 1802- E. obit Jan 5 1803"; they were eight years old when they died. This classic memorial composition is enhanced by the willow trees with their myriad seed stitches forming the shadows, a characteristic of the Rowson school pieces. The school was in existence, in different locations in and around Boston, from 1797 to 1822. This piece will be illustrated in an upcoming book published by Stewart, Tabori and Chang, with the working title, A Friendship Keepsake as an example of the early 19th century view of memorializing through needlework. In fine condition, it was worked in shades of silver, pale gold, brown and black with the face, garland, arms and sky painted onto the silk; the water was painted and then needleworked over the paint. The picture retains its original reverse paint glass mat and gilt frame. Size of the needlework 18 W' X 13", size of the glass mat 20" X 15". Price $3800.

18 Folwell School Needlework One of the finest known examples from Mrs. Folwell's school in Philadelphia, this allegorical needlework picture is entitled "Peace Crown'd by Victory", circa 1810. The needlework was performed by a member of the Carpenter family, most likely Elizabeth W. Carpenter, and the painted elements were executed by Samuel Folwell, a well-known painter and the husband of the schoolmistress. While many needlework pictures attributed to the Folwell school have survived, few are as important as this one. The desirable subject, large scale and, perhaps most important, excellent condition all combine to establish the rarity of this exquisite piece. The only other known example of the scene depicted here, in the collection of a prominent museum, lacks the mountain landscape painted in the background. Of special note are the painted seascape with small boats and most charming needleworked theorem-like still life. A color reproduction of this piece is scheduled to be included in the upcoming book by Davida Deutsch, entitled The Polite Lady; or A Course of Female Education. The needleworker chose to demonstrate her proficiency with a variety of stitches. The sheep are worked in French knots, and there is extravagant use of coiled metallic thread. The reverse paint glass mat is a faithful copy of the original, as best can be determined; the frame is a period gilt frame.

20 Dutch Darning Sampler We were fortunate to have found this classic, large Dutch darning sampler, initialled IMG and dated 1795. Darning samplers reached their pinnacle of refinement in the Netherlands in the 18th century, and this example typifies this development Our offering has twelve squares that were cut out, discarded and fully patterndarned, including one comer square - the sign of an accomplished needleworker. The sampler was worked in silk on India cotton, and is in pristine condition. Many darning samplers, this one included, were never framed or exposed to light over long periods, and so retain their original subtle shadings. Acidfree mounted, and in a new gold leaf frame with UV conservation glass. Sampler size 23" X 22". Price $1850.

21 Katherine Thomas This exquisite and rare English band sampler is inscribed "Katherine Thomas, aged 11 years, March 9". The year is partially illegible but appears to be 1763, which would be consistent with the early form of the sampler. Much of the inscription becomes quite small in scale in contrast to the center band which features a superb scene of a warrener and his rabbit A warrener, in early English history, was charged by the Crown with caring for "beasts of the warren", i.e., hares, rabbits, pheasants and partridges.
Our sampler, in early vertical format, features a total of 42lines of verse or decorative bands. It is worked in silk on linen and is in overall excellent condition. While exhibiting some slight loss to the silk, the brilliant colors are remarkably unfaded. It is now acid-free mounted and in a new gold leaf molded frame. Sampler size

22 Sarah Robinson This is a large and handsome silk needlework picture entitled "Monastery at Altorf' and signed by Sarah H. Robinson, circa 1820. It is most likely English and displays fme quality needlework throughout, including the chenille-worked trees, clothing, buildings and foliage; the faces, sky and water are quite delicately painted. Of special interest is the fact that this site is said to be where William Tell shot the apple off of his son's head, marked today by a statue of Tell in the Swiss town of Altorf. The needlework picture, silk and paint on silk, is in excellent condition. It retains its original reverse painted glass mat, signed in the lower left comer by Sarah H. Robinson. It is framed in an interesting 1870's incised Eastlake gilt frame. Size of the needlework picture, 17W'x 19W', glass size 25 W' X 27". Price $1900.
Margaret Landels This large and handsome sampler from the British Isles includes the following infonnation: "Margaret Landels age 13 years- 1771 Mrs. Foster". Mrs. Foster, no doubt was her teacher. The sampler is in its original line inlay mahogany fra~e. and the combination of needlework and frame is quite striking. Ten sheep parade across the lawn; the stately manor house is presided over by two ladies in 18th century gowns. Acid-free mounted, and in excellent condition. Sampler size 21" X 17''. Price $1900.

Mary Alexander A charming and decorative piece of needlework made by Mary Alexander in the British Isles, dated 1840. It is worked in wool on linen and is in very good condition, with some slight loss. The sampler has been acid-free mounted and is in a reproduction Hogarth frame. Sampler size 16" X 7 W'. Price $525.
Ann Harris Ann Harris chose an unusual oval format for her lovely verse sampler dated June 6, 1806. The oak leaf and acorn border was aptly matched to the verse, "The lofty oak from a small acorn grows, etc.". The graceful curvilinear needlework resembles calligraphy, another popular decorative art of the period. This English sampler is worked in silk on wool, and is in overall pristine condition with two very small holes. Sampler size 11 W' X 14 W'. Price $1700.
