The Site

A Critique on Standard Construction Methods • • • • • •

Buildings are typically constructed of concrete and steel According to the EPA, the 2010 Estimated Emissions calculated an approximate output of 117 million tons of CO2 per year from indirect emissions (such as electricity) from the iron and steel industry These emissions are compiled from 120 facilities in the iron and steel sector US cement manufacturing industry in 2001 produced approximately 76.9 million tons of CO2 per year These emission estimates do not include transportation of materials or the construction of these buildings.

In addition, concrete is very difficult to reuse unless they are prefabricated panels. Steel is reusable to a degree, however it is time consuming and not as workable as something like CLT panels

The Mid-Rise Building • • • • •

Mid-rise building found all over US cities Typically anywhere between 4-12 stories tall Loft buildings with open floor plans and high ceilings Repurposable buildings that have seen a resurgance in retail on the ground floor with residential units above.

Suitable for a variety of programs and allows for multiple uses over its lifespan

CLT and mass timber methods only require small trees instead of larger trees to create panels, beams, and columns rather than large trees needed for heavy timber buildings.
