ABOUT ME

My name is Lydia Roos, and I am a third-year student at Texas Tech University pursuing a Bachelor of Interior Design. I am passionate about Interior Design because of the everchanging needs surrounding human-centered design and the countless opportunities to innovate and inspire creativity within every space.

I have always been a dedicated student drawn to the arts. I have also always enjoyed project-centered classes, because of the great satisfaction of solving the given challenge and being able to offer a design that others can thrive in. I was often encouraged by the people around me to continue to explore creative thinking and ideas, which led to me pursuing Interior Design. Over the past three years, I have gained such rich knowledge of crucial aspects of Interior Design such as spatial planning, rhythm, balance, and lighting control, spatial planning, and designing to promote health. I strive to create captivating spaces that facilitate wellness and inspire the user to create as well.

Over the two past years, I have given back to the discipline of Interior Design through Texas Tech’s Campus Center International Interior Design Association. I now serve as the Philanthropy for this organization, where I am able to give back to the community by planning philanthropy events for myself and my peers. I am passionate about giving my classmates and other students the chance to serve Lubbock, as well as learn more about design, while building longlasting relationships. This opportunity has not only enabled me to enhance my professionalism but has also provided me with the chance to broaden my network of connections.

PROJECT STATEMENT

Nestled in Solvang, California, this two-story building complex seamlessly blended commerce, culture, and community. The ground floor hosted The Windmill, a Danish coffee shop that embraced hygge, and offered artisanal coffees and pastries. Next door, Nordic Bed & Bath invited guests to bring Solvang's heritage home with plush textiles and cozy essentials. The second floor featured a modern co-working space, that catered to diverse work styles with shared offices, collaborative workspaces, private offices, and a well-appointed kitchen break area

CONCEPT STATEMENT

Solvang Co-Complex, inspired by rich and inviting Danish culture, seamlessly blended traditional Dutch charm with the concept of "hygge" - a mood of coziness and contentment. The design incorporated clean lines, warm wooden tones, and a neutral color palette reminiscent of Dutch architecture. Intimate seating arrangements in the coffee shop and co-working spaces fostered gathering and conversation, complemented by natural materials like wool and leather for comfort. Popular Dutch lighting elements, such as candles and pendant lights, created a calming ambiance. The spaces featured fresh plants indoors and outdoors, subtle references to Dutch symbols, and embraced Solvang's eco-conscious values through sustainable practices like compostable packaging and bicycle racks for eco-friendly commuting.
