Artistic Director’s Welcome
Welcome to the beginning of Lyric’s 2024 Season! We are so fortunate to welcome the return of acclaimed performer Robert Montano after his sold-out, Off-Broadway run this past fall! Championed by a former Broadway dancer herself, Lyric’s Executive Producer Ashley Wells, this show is surprising, hysterical and heartfelt. Robert was last seen at Lyric playing the dynamic and driven director, Zach, in A CHORUS LINE. In fact, audiences worldwide know him from his many appearances on Broadway, Film and TV, but few know that he started his career as a horse jockey at the famed Belmont Park. In SMALL, Robert tells his heart-pounding story as only he can. His journey is only the first of many compelling stories we have to share with you this season. From the new musical, KING OF PANGAEA, to everyone’s favorite nanny, MARY POPPINS, to the Lyric premiere production of JERSEY BOYS, to a new musical production of the classic CINDERELLA in partnership with Deaf Austin Theatre – we have something for everyone! We hope you join us all year long as we create theatre right here at Lyric ... The Official State Theatre of Oklahoma!
See you in the lobby,
Michael BaronLyric Staff

Play wright & Performer
ROBERT MONTANO* (Playwright & Performer) was raised in Hempstead, LI, close enough to Belmont Park Racetrack where he had his first career as a professional racehorse jockey. For reasons, things took a turn on him as he traded in his jockey boots for ballet shoes. Showbiz was at his door. Robert has worked with great directors and choreographers such as Hal Prince, Rob Marshall, and Jerome Robbins. He had the pleasure of working with the legendary Chita Rivera in Kiss of the Spiderwoman, as well as her act, Chita Plus Two. He sang and danced with Peter Allen in Legs Diamond and starred as Ozzie in On the Town, directed by the innovative George C. Wolfe. But he couldn’t contain his creative scope to only musical theater, so he ventured into plays, film, and television. He created roles for the Academy Award-nominated writer Jose Rivera in Cloud Tectonics and References to Salvador Dali Makes Me Hot, Lynn Nottage’s Fabulation, Bess Wohl’s Barcelona, Tira Palmquist’s Two Degrees, Ken Lin’s Fallow, Richard Vetere’s One Shot One Kill, and Edwin Sanchez’s Diosa. At Actors Theatre of Louisville, Robert was given the honor to portray Cal in the epic East of Eden, directed by Jon Jory, later to be invited back to exercise his Shakespeare in The Comedy of Errors. He has also played Ralph opposite John C. Reilly in Marty. In television, he’s guest starred on: City on A Hill, Evil, Bull, Prodigal Son, Blue Bloods, NCIS: New Orleans, Elementary, Search Party, Sex and the City, CSI: Miami, Law & Order, and HBO’s film Undefeated, directed by John Leguizamo. Film: he appeared in Shame with Michael Fassbender; played opposite Mark Wahlberg and Joaquin Phoenix in The Yards; partnered with Catherine Zeta-Jones in Chicago, among other notable work in Center Stage.
Robert dedicates all his performances to Gloria and Salvatore Montano.

In Memory of the Legend, Chita Rivera
“It is very difficult to sum up the life of one as, Ms. Chita Rivera, or as I know her as... Cheet. She was my mentor, teacher, and above all else, friend. She was a true gypsy of the theatre and wouldn’t have it any other way; never considering herself a star… but to me and so many she is… a Star. She exuded all the elements of a “real star”… she carried herself with grace, warmth, intelligence, love, humor, curiosity; she was humble to the core, approachable, and generous. There is no greater example of a star, and who Chita Rivera was and what she is to The Great White Way… the “Queen of Broadway.” She is sorely missed already… especially by this very grateful friend. Thank you, Cheet… Love you. Always...”
