Have Yourself A Scary Little Christmas | Programme

Page 1

NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

FRANKIE MCCAFFERTY

Nearly every corner of this country has history of a big house dating back to the era of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy. Several are said to be haunted. Darkwood Manor, the big house where Scary Christmas is set, is one such, or is it? The tradition of ghost stories at Christmas has been with us a long time. Perhaps the best known of all seasonal yarns, Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, is a ghost story, and has been staged by Grimes & McKee as Bah, Humbug! This year’s show takes us again into the realm of the supernatural and things that go bump in the night. It assembles a colourful cast of characters to deliver a plot with more twists than a country road in Donegal. It’s got ghosts, mummers, monks, song and dance numbers and a séance. The village of Carrickilty and its big house are portrayed by just four actors, the lads being ably assisted by the wonderful Ali White and Nicky Harley, with music by the multi-talented Frankie McIlvanna, and choreography by the fabulous Sandy Cuthbert. Going to see the Grimes & McKee Christmas show has become a tradition for many families, we hope this year will bring many more along.

Merry Christmas!

NOTE

THE COSTUME DESIGNER

When I first heard the plot for this show I immediately thought of movies like Knives Out, or the board game Cluedo, and it led me to design each character with their own signature colour scheme, as if they were pawns in this story. The colours would also contrast nicely against the gorgeous, dark set.

With Lady Alice there were influences of Jessica Fletcher in Murder She Wrote, and for Nancy I looked to 90s/00s ghost hunting shows, and French and Saunders’ Most Haunted sketch for costume inspiration. I wanted to make Ciara personable in her costume as the no-nonsense, hard-working character she is, and for McKillop we went for a modern groundsman in orange/earthy colours, but bright tones that would stand out from the set. Toby was the trickiest character as we wanted him to be slightly Michael Portillo-inspired, with mismatched colours and patterns that almost don’t work but they do, so it was a fine line between the costume being cohesive or completely off.

I enjoyed designing the mummers as it involved linen fabrics and lots of colour, and I like the ‘home-made’ look we were going for, as if the mummers made their costumes in the story. I looked to the Armagh Rhymers and other mummers for inspiration, and I decided to dye each mummer garment to achieve the desired colours, as well as Ciara’s dusty pink scrubs. Costume Assistant Mairead McCormack made the wonderful mummer heads, they are beautifully striking pieces of theatre and it’s been amazing to bring them onto the Lyric stage.
