CÉAD MÍLE FÁILTE /A HUNDRED THOUSAND WELCOMES Welcome to ScotsFest 2026. As ever, we hope you and your family enjoy your visit with us on the beautiful Lyon College campus in Batesville, Arkansas. Whether you are here for Homecoming or the 46th Arkansas Scottish Festival, we are delighted to have you join us as we celebrate our heritage, our unique academic community, and our 154th birthday. Once again, we are holding the combined events in the fall, and we honor the roots of the festival as a part of the College’s Homecoming traditions. The first Scottish Festival, at then Arkansas College, was held in the intramural field as a part of Homecoming and Family Weekend. The games were seen as a way to recognize and pay tribute to the Scottish heritage of the College’s Presbyterian founders. As we continue to do, they originally featured athletics, vendors, pipe bands, clan representatives, Highland dancing, and much more. The Scottish festival has grown significantly over the years and is now known nationally as one of the preeminent events in the region. For many years, alumni and friends of the college had to choose between a spring Scottish Festival and a fall Homecoming for an opportunity to visit. By returning to a combined event we found that more old friends were able to join together and make new friends in the process. Are you looking for some entertainment prior to the Homecoming football game or other weekend reunions? The entertainment zone, British car show, sheep dog demonstrations, piping, Highland dancing, heavy athletics, and vendors all provide a perfect way to spend some quality family and friend time enjoying the sights, sounds, and smells of a great autumn day in the foothills of the Ozarks. Celebrate with Lyon students, alumni, faculty, staff, members of our Batesville community, and others who come from all over to be a part of this great weekend. Whatever may bring you to the Lyon College campus this October, we welcome you with open arms, and we are excited to see you. Welcome home, Scots, and welcome to those who are Scots for a day.

HIGHLAND ATHLETICS COMPETITION PRESENTED BY BANK OF CAVE CITY SATURDAY, 9 A.M. | COUCH GARDEN

Traditional Highland games have a long history ingrained in Scottish culture. Scotland has hosted these athletic events for over 1,000 years, and some of the events may have originated during Druid times. At first, these events conditioned Scottish troops and tested their strength. The strongest military men fashioned cabers from tree trunks and heaved smooth rocks from river beds. They tossed lead weights underhand over a bar more than twice their height. The competitor with the most points from these events was the Highland games champion. This year’s competition, sponsored by Bank of Cave City, seeks to recreate the thrill of these original athletic games.

FEATURED ALUMNI ARTIST: SPENCER GOFF, ’16

Spencer Goff attended Lyon College from 2012 to 2016 where he studied Studio Art, Mathematics, and Physics. His studies enhanced his understanding of art application and cemented the love for creating beautiful, meaningful work. Lyon also provided the opportunity to travel abroad, so he enrolled in a Semester at Sea for the Spring of 2015, sailing around the world to study global architecture and experience various cultures. In 2017, he moved to South Korea to teach English and later enrolled in the Master of Architecture program at Korea University. After a few years abroad, he returned home and completed his M.Arch. at Chicago’s Illinois Institute of Technology. Spencer now practices Architecture in San Jose, California, but it was during a stay near Seoul where he discovered the inspiration for this series.

차나무 (Tea Trees) is the product of a 2020 Covid Quarantine in Bucheon,

South Korea. Locked in a hotel room for two weeks, Spencer’s only human interactions were with the attendants in hazmat suits who brought him meals. With each meal came a different variety of tea, and with each cup of tea, a new tea bag stain on a drawing pad; over time, the faded blotches blossomed into foliage. Time felt infinite, and a curious ritual of outlining and enhancing the stains brought this series to fruition. Titles are in Korean Hangeul, an homage to the place that planted the seeds of these trees and provided a welcoming home in an uncertain time.
